He was one of my favorite teachers ever. He is really funny, interesting, and very helpful. He wants all of his students to learn a lot, but have fun and laugh in the process.
He's VERY funny and his class was fun! A lot of homework, but relatively easy...also a lot of reading. I had trouble understanding his grammar lectures though...
Great teacher. He's hilarious all the time which makes the class very interesting. If you're gonna take a Spanish class, take it from him.
Bro. Alba is the man!The work he gives you isn't busy work and actually has purpose. He is way helpful and understanding even if you turn in an assignment late. The is as good as a Spanish class will get.Seriously.I have taken Spanish classes since 6th grade. He really wants his students to learn something new and to grow.Tests are always take home.
Very easy to understand
Great teacher! He really knows his spanish and he is super funny. I always looked forward to going to class everyday!
Great sense of humor, pretty laid back but I did find his lectures a bit hard to follow. Advanced Spanish grammar is pretty dry all by itself but still. He doesn't really lecture per se, but rather answers questions. He does know his stuff though and he's funny- we sang silly songs at the beginning of every class to break the ice. I say go for it.
Brother Alba is a great teacher...he makes sure your questions get answered. We sing fun songs at the beginning of class and he jokes around while he's teaching. Sometimes it's boring if he's explaining something you know, but overall a great teacher
Brother Alba is awesome! He has us sing fun songs at the beginning of the class and jokes around and tells funny stories. He's really easy to understand and explains concepts well. He also gets you comfortable speaking Spanish by giving you lots of opportunities to contribute in class. Take his classes!!
He is awsome! I took the same class from someone else and did horrible. He make the class fun and everyone enjoys being there. Don't take this class from anyone else. Trust me on this.
Herm. Alba is awesome. He's always willing to laugh, be laughed at, and laugh at you (in a good way). Tests are easy and straightforward, and he's easy to understand. Group presentations 3 times a semester, 1 hour of speaking Spanish outside of class each week (my personal downfall. It was hard to find time with my schedule. Still got A-). Take him
Easy going. A genious with Spanish. Best Lanuage teacher at BYU-Idaho. Homework is fun and not too bad, tests are great. Best class to take.
He's a hilarious guy and knows a few ways to get through any explanation about the grammar, but the Spirit isn't present in his classroom. That takes a lot out of his teaching.
I love brother Alba, im taking 321 with him also, he is funny ! good looking, and makes spanish a great class. And just cuz he is funny does not mean the spirit aint there, ugh these molly mormons make me mad, but anyway TAKE THE class, any class with him :]
Trying to be honest and not just mean. Spanish genius, but extremely annoying personality and teaching technique. His self-made online textbook is completely incoherent and reads like his scattered stream of consciousness. His grating personal antics out weigh the benefit of his choppy conveyance of knowledge. Makes immature sounds.
Knew his stuff, but this guy was the most annoying teacher on campus. He seriously makes weird star wars noises and thinks it?s funny. I felt like I was in 10th grade English again. Horrible self-made text book. It was scattered and everywhere.
He totally rocks! People just need to calm down. Alba is definitely a great teacher, makes it fun and all these people complaining about the spirit kill me. the spirit is all about you so get it.
In comparison to the annoying word "like" that the rising generation uses, I prefer his thinking noises. Gives variety and personality. I've learned about Spanish culture through his songs, and the opening prayer afterward invites the spirit. Whether or not one feels it is personal. And his textbook is more understandable than others if you read it
One of my favorite teachers of all time. Keeps class fun and interesting, I laughed more in this class than in any other in college.I hated my previous spanish teacher and being in Alba's class was exactly what i needed to stop hating spanish and love it again.
What a great guy. Think you know how Spanish works? Guess what... you don't, but he does and he's more than willing to teach it to you. Always funny and always helpful, Hermano Alba is a great choice for anyone interested in the subject. Also, be prepared to actually laugh as you learn. Fun-haters stay away.
Brother Alba is the man!! One of the best teachers that I've had. He truly cares about the success of each of his students. To be successful in this class. READ, do the homework, and ATTEND class.
He is a great teacher! I would love to have a conversation with the haters on here. He truly cares that you learn. Best teacher I've had this far.
Best Spanish teacher at BYU-Idaho! I've had him for three classes now, and comparing him to the other Spanish teachers, he is the best. Funny, fun, and very helpful. Who can really turn Spanish grammar and phonetics into an interesting subject? Brother Alba can. Always willing to meet you and help in any way. If you have a choice, choose him.
Brother Alba is the best Spanish teacher I've ever had...hands down! I can't count the number of times he made my day with his jokes, his stories, and the way he teaches. He made learning a potentially boring subject (grammar) lots of fun. Brother Alba, you're the best!
Brother Alba deserves a chili pepper (viernes chile). I am so grateful that I had him for a second semester. He wants each student to be successful and creates an environment where you can expect to learn by the Spirit. To well: READ, Do the homework, study for tests, ATTEND class.
Brother Alba is a fantastic teacher. He really knows his stuff. He makes class enjoyable and I personally learned so much from him that I was unable to learn from other teachers. I 100% recommend this professor to anyone who has a genuine interest in not just learning Spanish, but also understanding Spanish.
Hermano Alba is the best spanish teacher at byui. He is so funny and I loved attending class. I'm so sad I wont have him again but I would do it again if I could!
I can't believe Alba even has ONE bad review on here. BEST TEACHER ALIVE...Knows Spanish like u can't believe and is GREAT at teaching u how to learn AND understand it. He is extremely funny yet he brings the Spirit to class so all you haters must have just not gone to class I guess. If you have the choice, take him. PhD in Spanish Linguistics.
Best teacher in the foreign language department. I've had them all and all are good in their own way but Alba blows them all out of the water. He is super funny and connects to his students and the material. If you have a choice take Alba first, then Colvin
Bro Alba is one of the best professors on campus. His passion for the subject matter is contagious, and his knowledge is expansive. His textbook is the best advanced grammar book out there, and the workload is just about perfect. If I could take another class from him, I would. Sure he's a dork, but it adds to the class.
Brother Alba is the best spanish teacher on campus. He is super smart and in my opinion, he is very humble about his knowledge. I kept the book that he wrote and I still draw on it today for any questions I have. If you are looking to get btother alba...take him!!!
By far the best Spanish teacher in the school. He is so helpful and the homework is manageable. A large portion of your grade will depend on your own work and he trusts you to be honest with the amount of effort and work you put it. His tests are not difficult if you pay attention in class, take notes, do all the reading and review a bit before.
Brother Alba is the best professor I've taken on this campus. He's the funniest person I know and taught me more about Spanish than anyone else here. Even when school got tough, he was my reminder why Spanish is my minor- he puts joy into learning. I'm very grateful I got to know him and learn from him! -Kayla Gilbert
Alba is the man! I enjoyed the class and am thankful for all of the time and preparation he put into each and every class. I remeber one day he decided to play a game involving the entire class and everyone was participating and from then on, it seemed that he was always trying to devise new games. I also learned so much from him. Great structure!
Hermano Alba is the best! His class was fun and entertaining. He has a way of making the material seem more interesting than it actually is. Highly recommend taking him.
Funniest man on campus. He is so weird he is funny! You'll love his class.
Love him!
He is really helpful and an approachable guy, you always use the textbook for homework or literature assignments. Good teacher but a little boring sometimes in class going over the homework when it's grammar. Once you get to literature, he's a lot more enthusiastic.
One of the best professors I have ever had! He is very helpful with all of the assignments and makes it very easy to learn the concepts he is teaching. If you don't get an A in this class its because you didn't want to.
Matt Alba was definitely my favorite Spanish teacher. Very clear with how he wants everything done for homework, tests, and papers. He is forgiving and understanding with life issues. His sense of humor is genius at times. Beware though: you will sing a lot ;)
Brother Alba is an AMAZING teacher. He knows Spanish super well and his lectures are super helpful and fun. Even if you didn't serve a Spanish mission, this class is super easy. Go to class, do the homework, and pay attention. He's super funny, too. Get ready to sing the most ridiculous and funny songs you'll ever hear!
Phonetics was the coolest class that I have ever taken and brother Alba does a fantastic job teaching it. He's super fun to joke with but he's also a really great teacher. He doesn't require attendance but he doesn't take assignments late and he explains things really well in his lectures (which are really entertaining). Get ready to sing as well!
Great teacher, helped me a lot. Fun class. Much class participation. A lot of homework, but if you put in the time, it's easy.
Brother Alba is one of my favorite teachers. He is a great guy with a great sense of humor. He knows the material really well. He is very understanding that we have personal lives and things to do. I ended the semester with a high B and he rounded me up to an A-. Lots of work but its effective. TAKE THIS CLASS.
Bro. Alba is the bomb. He's funny and quirky. The first day none of us knew if we should laugh or be quiet, but he is really fun loving so don't be afraid to enjoy yourself. The subject of phonetics is generally boring, but he makes it a little more interesting. The exams are take home/on your honor but are pretty easy to lose points on.
Brother Alba is awesome! You can feel in his teaching his love for the spanish language. His PowerPoints are very educational and entertaining. He follows a homework/tests/projects/evaluations calendar very well and ensures that it is available to the students. Fun and fantastic teacher!
Brother Alba is a great teacher! He is very passionate about this class. There is a lot of material to cover and he does well with the time that we have in class. He is very well organized and knows how to use I-Learn. Only the final was taken in the testing center. There are two group projects and one 1500 word research paper.
He knows Spanish very well and is really funny. I really enjoyed the content of this class and it took my understanding to the next level. There are no daily quizzes but his tests are pretty moderate. There is a lot of things to turn in for this class but it didn't break my back at all doing them. Overall a very great class.
Brother Alba is the best teacher ever! He is passionate about what he teaches and genuinely wants to help his students succeed. His enthusiasm and sense of humor make every class a blast. He makes you really want to learn. He is fair and clear on what he expects of you and doesn't spring any surprises on you. Absolutely take his class!
He is the most funny and awkwardest guy ever! I enjoyed going to his class everyday! Felt like family. Spanish is hard, but he makes it bearable. get ready to study!!
Considerate, hilarious, super smart, hilarious, very organized, hilarious, fair, hilarious, and likes to chat about pretty much anything. He is also hilarious. Literally just do the assignments and show up to class in order to turn them in. You are guaranteed a good grade.
His Chile & Cuba class was one of the best classes Ive taken. so chill. By participation, just be involved in discussions in class. He teaches you everything so its not hard to have something to say. Easy before class assignments. Tests are online except the final. Attendance partially matters, just keep up with it. Fun class & hilarious teacher.
Alba is a really good teacher, I really enjoyed his class. Very glad to have been able to take his class. Definitely recommend his class for Latin American Focus. Do attend class and do the homework and you'll be fine. Also make sure to do all of the extra credit and it'll help out a lot!!
really awesome teacher. he is very gracious and loves to laugh. His class is very relaxed but he makes sure you know everything you need to for the tests. I would definitely take his class again.
Brother Alba is a super nice guy, but hes also really quiet and soft spoken. This makes for pretty boring lectures. Every class theres a ton of reading, but he offers extra credit and theres multiple group project throughout the semester. Easy grader. Hes the only teacher that provides a study guide for the Latin American course.
Brother Alba is awesome! He is so funny and really caring. If you need extra help in the class you can go to him for help. The course was very easy, and honestly if I put in more work I would have gotten an A no problem. I love Brother Alba and would take his class 100 times over!
Brother Alba is great. He cracks jokes during class and that makes it much easier to focus when some less interesting topics are being discussed. He gives extra credit opportunities and his expectations of the class are made clear from the beginning of the semester. If you are taking a class he teaches, I highly recommend taking it from him.
Hilarious teacher, always willing to help students who are struggling.
Hermano Alba was a great teacher. There is a lot of homework toward the end but it all is for something. He is not a hard grader. Probably the best spanish teacher. If you are going to take this class take it through him. He is a very easy grader. As long as you do the work he gives you 100%. Everything moves really fast though.
He is a solid teacher. The course is very heavy with homework, essays, and a final assignment involving a lot of work. There are 4 homework assignments each week and 3 essays spread out over the semester. He starts every class period with a joke and invites students to share jokes as well. Great guy. The textbook for the class was written by him.
Excellent teacher. He is slow to speak but has a great work system.
Brother Alba knows his stuff. His class is split into two parts. the first half is in depth grammar but is super helpful and then you read Spanish literature for the second half. Not much homework. ONe quiz per class and one essay and only a few tests plus no final!
Brother Alba is a fantastic teacher. I have taken him for two classes and only wish he taught more upper-level courses. He is able to explain difficult Spanish concepts in a way that make comprehension easy. In this course, I saw my Spanish writing and speaking improve tremendously. I consider it the best class I have ever taken!
Brother Alba is a great guy and he tries really hard to be funny and relatable. I didn't like his classes. I took SPAN 302 and SPAN 321 from him and they were super easy classes but I learned nothing. He was really boring and every class was based off the exercise assigned for that day. Overall, really easy class.
Brother Alba is a good teacher. He is pretty funny and very nice. The homework is clear and helpful, and his feedback is very precise and helps a lot. The lectures are usually not super interesting, but it might be because of zoom. Overall a pretty easy class, the concepts are hard to grasp but the workload is not overwhelming.
I served my mission speaking Spanish was put in his 302 then took his 321 class. I struggled. But, let me tell you this man cared for me and my success in his class. He is hilarious and he wrote the textbook himself. He is a wonderful man and professor. TAKE HIM OR YOU"LL MISS OUT
Bro Alba is very personal and very caring for his students. Attendance is part of your grade. Overall it is very easy to get an A in the class. Class is a lecture the entire time but lots of practice mixed in with the lectures. He is also funny, so that's a plus!
Bro. Alba knows his stuff. He is passionate about grammar and is funny about it. It is rather difficult to takes notes in his class because he is scatter-brained. The homework is super instructive which makes up for the lack of notes. He is able to explain complex ideas for easy understanding.
Brother Alba is very genuine and takes the time to help you if needed. His class has a lot of busy work and it's not super hard. He does lecture a lot and it can be a bit boring, but he does make an effort to do activities sometimes and if you really listen and participate his class isn't too bad.
Hermano Alba is the best! His class structure is very clear and he relies on you to be honest and grade your own work. His tests are open book and never overwhelming. He is SOOO FUNNY, Hno. Alba is still the only teacher to ever make me belly laugh. His class was so great and the workload was never to much. Very reasonable for a 300 level class.
Hno. Alba is the best! He wants his class to be enjoyable and for all his students to pass. He sets expectations, while also making class fun. Definitely would take a class from him again.
Pretty run of the mill as for professors, comparable to the brown part of lucky charms cereal. The class I took was super easy. Attendance is mandatory and half the battle. Do not ever rent the book abriendo puertas, classical literature can always be found via PDFs online, as well as on YouTube. 302 is super easy if you actually speak spanish.
Hermano Alba is the best! He does expect a lot out of his students, but he is super good at explaining things and helping you understand the material. He wants his students to pass his class, you just have to put in the work. He is also super funny. The class does take work, but if you're going to take any Spanish class, take it from Alba!
Love hermano Alba! How do I give him one of the chilis?
Hermano Alba is one of the best professors I've had! He has great Spanish and is very knowledgeable of language, grammar, and phonetics. He is also so hilarious, so class will always be a good, fun time!
He is so funny. If you are a returned missionary I would highly recommend this class. There's hw every class but pretty easy if you put in the work.
He is wonderful
Super fun guy, and even if you're not into linguistics, phonetics, or deep grammar type stuff, he'll still make it interesting!
This class was one of my hardest—not because of the content, but because of how it was taught. Professor Alba knows the material well but skips the steps beginners need. He uses self-deprecating humor when students are lost and overwhelmed. It may help if he teaches this lesson to education teachers for feedback on the steps he skips.
Brother Alba is a fantastic professor! He clearly has put time into his presentations. He wrote the textbook for the class, so it's cheap, and he can easily explain the topics. He is very entertaining, and class is fun and insightful. He finds fun songs to sing at the beginning of class that use the grammar you're learning.
I love Hno Alba, he's hilarious. The class is great for FLUENT Spanish speakers (RMs). It's really easy to pass, actually understanding the content- absolutely not. It's really just the curriculum and not the teacher, they cram way too much info into one semester. Mainly focuses on grammar so I don't feel like my speaking improved at all.
Professor Alba is super funny and great at explaining the grammar rules of Spanish. My class wasn't very animated, but he did his best to make the class engaging, and he learned all of our names pretty quickly. The main assignments are to read a chapter before each class and do assignments (no longer than one page) that correlate to the chapter.
He's hilarious. Grade your own homework, he makes difficult grammar concepts a whole lot easier to understand. He's always willing to help you understand more. He can answer even the most complex of questions that you ask and often lets you fix big projects after they are graded to get a better score. If you work hard then you'll get an A or B.
