Great teacher! His tests were fairly simple as long as you studied and he puts REALLY easy current event questions at the end for bonus! Take him if at all possible!
He is new but he does a good job. The textbook for this class is terrible so you really need to pay attention to him. He is open to questions and helping out. His tests are a little tricky but I got an A in the class
he is a very good teacher. He explains stuff well. He would try to make the test hard but I passed everyone and so did pretty much everyone in the class. He explains stuff so well and helps you so much! take him he is great!
he is awesome
He's very helpful in making sure the students understand the material. Pretty easy class, but his test can be a little trouble for those who can not memorize material. Tests consist of writing out definitions and shor answers along with a few problems to work out. So, be able to explain the material for the test. If you can do that, you'll be fine!
He is a great teacher, if you need help he'll help you in everyway. The only catch is that his exams are hard.
Use his study guides. They is never anything on the test that was not on the study guide. When you study the material, write out your answers as if short essay because that is what his test are. Very rarely did I use the book. If you study his notes and write that on the test, you will make an A.
Awesome! Take this teacher. Will help explain anything. Wants you to learn. Study the quizzes that you can print out from Blackboard with correct answers. Textbook useless (and he tells you that) Tests fair-not easy, not unduly difficult. I went in expecting Teddy Roosevelt and was presently surprised to find Ronald Reagan.
He is a great professor. He makes the subject interesting and his tests are pretty much straight off the study guide. A very nice guy as well. Definitely take this professor.
This is the worst teacher I have ever had without a doubt. He never seems sure of what he is talking about. Homework is not always relevant to what he goes over in class. Contradicts himself constantly & made himself VERY hard to understand. He even admits to coming on this site and rating himself well so more ppl will take his courses..pathetic.
Horrible teacher, he doesnt cover everything throughly. He put up the wrong study guides online, even for the final and didnt compensate for it. No bonus opportunities. AVOID THIS TEACHER!
He mentioned today that he got his first two "haters" on RMP. But I've got to tell you, he's probably going to be my only B this semester (the rest are A's) and I STILL think he's a great teacher. His tests are hard, but only because I'm getting lazy with all these scantron tests. Southeastern, if you're listening GIVE THIS GUY A FREAKING RAISE!
This course could be difficult, but if you pay attention and take the time to understand the topics discussed, you will do fine. Tests are all short answer so you are forced to actually learn the material. Not for the lazy student. Very funny and enthusiastic about teaching. Econ is not a subject that excites me, but he kept my interest.
I'm glad at least 2 people feel the same way I do. He was a terrible teacher at best! I heard him say he writes his own reviews on this blog with my own 2 ears! To be honest I wouldn't be surprised if he was actually the one defending himself in the earlier blogs. For your own good, STAY CLEAR of him. No need to waste your time!
Dr. Alford, Is a great professor and he explains things very clearly. All his test are short answers, but everything is off the study guides. I made a "B" in his class for the summer. I would have made an "A" if I would have taken it in the Fall semester. He is Awesome!!!!!!! Take him if you want to learn more Economic. I am taking him 401.
He was a good teacher. He had study guides online that were the questions on the test word for word. If you did bad in his class, you didn't study or you are a complete idiot. Meow.
This guy is a good "guy". I really enjoyed his class and his bro-hawk. I think anyone who takes his class will benefit from it. I just wanted to say, if you make a bad grade in his class you are not a good person. "Bro-hawk" Meow-pickle
I really don't understand why people are writing such bad reviews. They must just be lazy. He is a really good teacher & actually keeps you interested. Yes, his tests are all short answer but just take the time to study & KNOW the material & you will do fine. People are being way too harsh!
AWESOME TEACHER! His tests are not multiple choice, but don't let that scare you. If you study, you'll make an A.
If you have to take an ECON class, do everything possible to NOT take him. He is rude. His tests are short answer because, according to him, multiple choice tests are for idiots.
Wow, some people are so mean! No, he is not the easiest teacher in the world, but you don't learn anything with the easy one's. He is a great teacher and he knows his stuff. I would take him again. Not to mention...he is easy on the eyes for sure ;)
Not easy, but EXCELLANT! If you want the grade, you have to earn it. There are no "freebies" no matter what you look like. This professor expects you to be responsible for yourself. No excuses. He is a professor, actually a "DR" of Economic Studies, not a babysitter. So be prepared for college level coursework and lectures.
Great teacher! I loved his class! Very informative! You learn a lot in class and the test are on that material. Tests are all short answer, but he grades easy. If you read over your notes and study hard, you'll be fine! I always hated econ, but I didn't mind it at all with him! I got an A with no problem! Would love to take him again!
Not easy... but INCREDIBLE and REFRESHING. I absolutely did not ace the course but had to work for my grade and was proud of what I walked out of there with at the end of the semester. I didn't just "learn" about econ for the semester. I wast taught econ for the semester and learned the relevance of ECONOMICS for life. SLU is lucky to have him.
Excellent lecture class. Like most great teachers, you will have to work for your grade but will learn a lot. So go to class and pay attention.
He's a little tough and his tests definitely are not pleasant. He is informative though and he keeps a good atmosphere in the class. I'd probably take him again.
Very informative teacher, actually enjoyed going to class. Tests are essay and short answer but do not let that scare you its black and white just study the study guide and go to class and you will be fine.
Dr. Alford is adorable! His faux hawk and sweater vests are sexy! As far as the class goes, it was the most bearable Econ class I've ever had! The tests are short answer but even so, I almost got a 100 in this class. Just study and you'll do good. He's a really chill guy with a dry sense of humor! Would take him again if I didn't hate Econ so much!
Great teacher. His lectures are informative and interesting. Tests are essay but don't let that scare you. He makes sure you are well prepared for the tests. Very knowledgeable about the subject and overall a nice guy!! Would take him again.
He's a well educated teacher who knows what he's talking about. Make sure to go to class cause his lectures are iportant. It seemed like he had a series of jokes he had to tell to lighten the mood before every class. Absolutely hilarious. I loved his class so much and I'm depressed I can't take it again:( Oh yeah he dresses nice and he's gorgeous!
Dr. Alford was an amazing teacher!! I hated economics before I took his class and now it's not so bad. I learned more from his class than 201 and 202 combined. And he's soo attractive! His little faux hawk and sweater vests make my day. Deff take him if you want an A!!
Doesn't use power points, which seems hard, instead you physically take notes in class. I enjoyed this because you don't get bored, actually learn & do better on tests. Tests are short answer, I did well because he does a great job explaining & partial credit is given for anything correct in answer. Quiz every week helps raise grade. LOVED HIM!
Alford is a great teacher! Tests are not easy (since you actually have to study and understand the material), but they are passable with minimum effort on your part. The quizzes are decent and help your grade. And he's down-to-earth and can relate to his students. Enjoyed it!
He's very smart with a dry sense of humor. Class is actually enjoyable which is unheard of for Economics. Short answer tests but everything is straight from his notes and he the study guide which he posts as soon as he starts a new section. Also unbearably cute. Like almost distracting.
Took him for 201, 202 and will be taking him for 333. TAKE HIM, no questions asked. I scheduled my classes around his class. Love him. Short answer tests, but he teachers so thoroughly. Made me nervous, but was actually easy! Can def walk out saying you learned alot!
Short answer tests and weekly quizzes. But hey get together with 3 other people in your class so you guys can get all the answers right. Such a cutie! Made an A in his class, but I wasn't easy or hard, just had to work for it
I guess he was alright but extremely hard for me. He very interesting though. He gives you a study guide and a lot of the info is on the test and some of it isn't. He gives you a short answer test which is difficult but understandable because no one can cheat. To me, he was helpful but hard.
Lots short answers and essays gives lots of examples for math. No that bad of a class take him for 333 I got a B while I got C s in my other econs he really likes teaching and will help you
Idk what the rest of these people are talking about this man is awful! I wouldn't recommend him to the devil!
He is awesome! Tests are short answer but they provide a demonstration of achievement and understanding of the material. He gives a big study guide with lots of info, but gives choices as to which terms you define on the test. If you go to class and take good notes, you should pass. If you are engaged in the subject matter, you will get an A.
Took him for ECON201. He's really funny & undeniably cute! Seriously though, after sitting through multiple lectures with boring teachers all day it's refreshing to be in his class! ;) short answer tests, if you study & put in the effort you will do good. I made an A! This class isn't easy, but Alford makes it as interesting as it can be. TAKE HIM!
He is extremely boring to sit through class with. He is obsessed with himself. He is unclear with have of his explinations. The positive is that his tests are pretty easy if u attend class, pay attention, and ask questions.
First, I thought he was full of him self and dry..his test are not difficult if you listen and take good notes and then of course study; the key is to be able to explain the study guide . He is very nice looking and willing to help if you ask.He just attempts to be a stick in the mud on the first day but he isn't so bad and is HOT + i learned.
Nice guy, and very knowledgeable and helpful. Personally, I prefer his style of testing over M/C. The short answer tests ensure that you actually learned the material: you're forced to pay attention, take notes, and study for the tests accordingly. I think I learned more in his class than any two classes outside of my major curriculum combined.
TAKE HIM! Alford is a great teacher who loves economics. I enjoyed his test format (short answer), but don't let it scare you. You will actually learn something in his class. Test are super easy if you take down notes. He gives a study guide which is really helpful. Wish he was teaching 202 because I would take him in a heart beat
His tests are all short answer or "essay". They are not easy however there are no suprises on the tests. He gives you study guides and as long as you study and know them verbatim you will have no issues with his class at all. I would highly recommend him if you are willing to put forth the effort to study. I worked hard and got a B.
Between this class and my finance class, I've never learned more. The tests are short answer, but what do you go to school for? To learn. It requires that you learn the material! And he gives you a study guide with everything on the test. Take this teacher if you want to actually take something away from a class.
Tests are written but super easy. Gives a study guide and 5 pt quizzes are due each week that also help bring your grade up. Definitely would take again. His lectures are very interesting!
This dude is the funniest guy i have ever met. You try making "money and banking" funny. Great overall guy. Tests are pretty hard. I say, take at least 2- 3 days to study for the exams. I learned more in this class, than i did any other class. Even though he's kinda hard. I would recommend.
Great professor!!! He has great way of simplifying all the material where you can understand it fully. His test are not multiple choice which really was a good thing. I actually learned and retained a lot of material from his class this way. Just don't be like me and forget about the online quizzes every week. Im definitely taking him again.
Show up to class. Copy what he has on the board. Use his study guide. Do the quizzes. Take test. Short answer but it's straight forward. Win at life. He has a weekly online quiz that doesn't really match what he teaches each week but you get 2 attempts. The tests are usually definitions, explain, and some math. He is hilarious and a great teacher.
Comes off as a dbag, but if you stay in the class and come to lectures, he's a really cool guy and f**king hilarious. If you have to take ECON 202, take it with Alford. Takes no bullsh*t, but practically gives away points with online quizzes and easy in-class handouts. Really awesome professor.
I'd hate to stroke this guy's ego, but he's a great professor. He's always willing to help and his test are the fairest of them all. Yes, it is short answer, but there are quizzes, study guides, and crystal-clear notes. Not only does he make the financial system interesting, he makes the class enjoyable and pretty funny.
Top 5 professors I've had at SELU. His tests are short answer because he wants you to learn. If you know the study guide you will get 100% on every test. He gives weekly quizzes that you should only use google for because they Come from quiz let. Awesome teacher
Awesome professor!
Great teacher! Not an easy class but if you listen and study, you actually learn. This is my second time to take him. Test are handwritten but that allows for partial credit. Notes from class are all you need to know. He is snooty but he does know his stuff and teaches it well. I would take him again.
This is first time I felt the need to leave a review on a professor. He was the best I have had at SELU. Very knowledgeable and willing to help. Is able to explain complicated concepts in a simple way. The material is dry, but he did a good job to make it interesting. He gives tips for life after school as well. Highly recommend
Before taking Alford, I sucked at econ and after reading his reviews I was scared for the class. DONT LET THE REVIEWS SCARE YOU. This is the best econ teacher at SELU! If you skip class and don't want to try then don't take him, but he's really not that bad if you actually go to class and take notes. Test aren't that hard either.
Dr. Alford gives long lectures which can be boring at times. He seems to be a bit full of himself, but he is sarcastic so maybe it's a joke(?). His tests are all short answer, not multiple choice. You can't guess on the tests and still pass. However, the tests are actually pretty easy. He gives a study guide that tells you what you need to know.
I want him to be my best friend. He dresses so cute which I know has nothing to do with his teaching but whatever. Tests are short answer; don't expect multiple choice. You do have to study for his tests but this actually ended up becoming my favorite class. He is dry but it's enjoyable. If you ask for extra credit... hahahaha that's funny, don't.
Easily the best professor I've ever had at SLU. Lectures are long but keeps it very interesting throughout. Don't expect this as an easy A, Dr. Alford truly wants you to understand how economics works, and his tests prove just that.
This man is excellent. If he writes it on the board, it goes in the notes. Gives a study guide that explains what you need to know. DON'T SKIP CLASS. Gives good examples that help you better understand the material. All short answer which is basically your notes if you wrote what was on the board. This is the teacher to take, no question.
His tests are short answere/fill in the blank but he prepares you for them. Show up, take notes, and you will do fine. He does a weekly Moddle quiz that is multi. choice but only 5 pts each. Would absoltuely recommend and take again.
Dr. Alford is a really good teacher. His lectures really help you fully understand the topics covered. His exams are all short answer, so you need to study the notes very diligently. The exam questions will not be a surprise, so it is very possible to make a 100. He doesn't try to trick you. The Moodle quizzes are due every week. Overall good class
Tests are short-answer. Study his notes exactly and you'll do fine.
I really liked him a lot, but the class is pretty difficult. Tests are short answer, but they're simple enough if you study hard. If you show up to class & take good notes, you should be fine. He's pretty funny too, which always helps get through a long class that you don't always really understand.
He is GREAT at teaching/lecturing. He gives all notes on the board (no powerpoints) and all exams are short answer (so you do need to study). He might be a little scary on the first day, but he's really funny the rest of the semester. The exams mirror the study guide, and if you make flashcards, you'll do well on the tests.
Writes notes on board, test are short answer and you draw a lot of graphs. DO NOT SKIP CLASS. Learn all the notes and study the study guide and you will do fine. Really makes you work for your grade.
ECON 202 Dr. Alford is a funny person, seems scary but his class was VERY difficult for me! Will never take his class again because ALL of his test were short answer. There are students who are not test takers so I feel he should change his test up.
Loved Dr. Alford, makes jokes in class and gives time for questions frequently. There's a study guide for every test, study it and you will do good on the tests- you even get a review day. Tests are short answer, but he'll give you 3 questions and you answer 2. When he writes it on the board, write it in your notes. Doesn't give homework.
Alford is a dawg. He knows what he teaches and uses good examples to explain his thoughts. Took him for 201 202 and 333 with no regrets. If you actually want to learn something take him. Tests are short answer but they are not difficult at all if you actually pay attention.
Alford is a pretty decent guy. He knows what he's teaching and gives real examples. My only complaint is his tests. They're very clear, just short answer. When you're not a test taker, it kind of sucks. Still, I'd take him again if I had too. He gives a lot of quizzes to help with your grade. Just do those, show up to class, and study the guides.
As everyone else has said, Alford is sarcastic as hell but it helps keep the classroom alive and the lecture not drag. Though his tests are short answer, they are so straightforward that you could only fail if you didn't study. Everyone I know who shows up and review before gets an A. The way he teaches and prepares his tests are extremely helpful!
Do not take his online class!! It is very hard/difficult to understand any of the work posted to MyEconLab. He does not post notes for you to read, so therefore you are basically trying to each yourself. He also does not give you any kind of study guide before any test. Also, does not grade any of the discussions questions posted until midterms.
Great lectures. Genuinely seemed to care. Offered lots of "life skills" in his lectures. Will for sure take again. Don't skip class. Without his explanations that break down the material it is very very hard.
His test are hard. They are written test, so you need to know your stuff. He tells you exactly what you need to study though, you just NEED to study. I learned that is you recopy the notes (especially the graphs) you'll be fine. He also does a lot of Moodle quizzes to help out your grade. Just be warned you need to work for that A. SHOW UP TO CLASS
Truly loved this class! Alford makes learning Econ fun because he is so funny(and kind of hot). You must go to class to understand the material. Tests are write-out, making you actually learn the material. Final is cumulative. Easy points by doing weekly moodle assignments. 10/10 would take and look at him again.
Easy to get along with, if you have a problem or question he is very good at explain into better depth if needed.
STUDY!!!! Lectures was contradicting past lectures sooo study!!! Dont skip class, ever!!
Tests are all write out, but if you practice you'll do fine. He's a great teacher and tells some funny stories. Do the moodle quizzes because it will help your grade.
Go to class or you will not have a chance at passing his class. First and third test are fairly easy, as long as you study. His second test is usually the hardest. Do not try and memorize the material, write everything you need to know multiple times. He is extremely sarcastic and funny and a nice guy. Do moodle homeworks to help your grade.
Worst professor ever. Test are all written, no multiple choice. Very hard. Would not recommend him at all. Not many assignments to pull grade up. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Great prof. Hes very funny and makes class enjoyable. He can be a sarcastic a-hope sometimes but he genuinely cares about his students. Always very helpful. 4 test, 10 quizzes and no bonus! His tests are doable but you have to study cause its all short answer! Super cool guy though!
Dr. Matt is awesome. I had him during the Covid mess and the transition from F2F to online for his class was extremely hard because of how he conducts his course. Going to class is important. If people say he is hard its because they didnt want to do the work and study. He keeps his lectures fun and interesting and cares about his students.
All hand written exams. Could be up to 4 questions. Doesnt care about any students, he just wants to get paid and go home. Literally worst professor at SELU. If you want to fail, take him.
he assigns a lot of homework and most of it has nothing to do with the tests. he also is not very concerned with keeping up with grades in the computer.
Dr. Alford is a great professor. I am not a business major, but by the end of the semester I felt like I wanted to major in economics. His lectures are grounded in reality and use lots of real world examples. He is very helpful if you're willing to put in the work. I enjoyed this class very much, and know more about econ than I did before.
Dr. Matt is really chill and his lectures are hilarious. He really tries to give good examples and connect boring material to real life. He also gives helpful life tips. He assigns 3 assignments every week and there are 3 exams, pretty hard tbh but you will pass if you study.
Best professor Ive ever had hands down! Hes very hands on during his lectures and hes also very entertaining in the sense that Im not bored to death day dreaming. His test are very hard but if you pay attention during his lectures and do the worksheets you will do fine. 10/10 would 100% take his class again!
Online class- The math lab homework and quizzes don’t correlate to the test that he gives you. He does not give you a study guide before a test. Also, does not grade any of the discussion questions or post anything from math lab until midterms. So when I failed the first exam because I was studying what was on math lab it brought me down to a F.
He makes the material easy to understand and has interesting stories to tell along with his lectures but the tests are sooo hard. There's definitions that you have to write out and fill-in-the-blank portion with no word bank. Both of which are a good chunk of the test grade. Weekly homework but simple. I would not recommend.
I enjoy how he lectures because he does not use PowerPoints or the book. He goes off of memory/"outlines" so that the material is broken down as simply as possible. Also tells funny stories. Yes, tests are not multiple choice, which is definitely an adjustment. But if you do the graphs/definitions just as he does them in class, you will do fine.
such a tough grader, but he tells you exactly what you need to know. Dont skip class ever if you can manage it, but hes good to look at it so it shouldnt be a problem. No bonus, but if you go to class and study exactly how he tells you, youll do great! I passed with an A because i did my assignments and went to class
Test are extremely hard. It's so much material to remember it's impossible. The test are hand written, fill in the blank with no word bank. I would not recommend this teacher at all. It's like he's proud of making things harder than they should be. This class is going to be the reason I'm dropping out.
You have to go to class but his lectures are great. He explains everything well. Homework every week and worksheets sometimes. A lot of graphs. Tests aren't multiple choice so you actually have to learn. Overall it was my fav class this semester.
Doesn't care about students. I would not recommend this teacher. If you want to fail take him.
He was a great guy but I hated the class. I did not like the format of the tests. Make sure you study and get help if you need it because you can get behind easily. I have nothing against him personally, he was really funny and pretty nice. If you like studying and you like a good challenge, take him.
He really is a funny guy. His tests are impossible. No multiple choice, only short answers. Your grade is based off of your points. Get ready to study. I would not recommend him.
I took him in the Summer for Econ 202. I really enjoyed him and plan on taking him for Econ 333. Very straight forward. The summer was easy tbh.
The class was very easy to follow. As long as you are paying attention to the material, you should be fine. For studying, only looking at the final product wont help, you have to redo the problems repeatedly to fully understand the concept(s). There is an online aspect to the class, if you do each one, its a free 5 points per quiz.
Professor Alford is absolutely amazing, his knowledge on the subject he teaches is unparalleled. The lectures are always very informative and detailed. If you don't learn something in this class, it is your fault. The tests are difficult because they do not include any multiple-choice questions. However, test material is always covered in class.
He's a very funny guy and tells stories that at first might not seem like they have anything to do with the subject matter, but he always finds a way to relate it back to it. His tests are hard because they're all short answer and/or require you to draw and create graphs. There are also online assignments that he rarely if ever reminds you about.
I took him in the summer of 2022. Very straight forward and easy. The tests are essay questions to make sure you understand the material. I would take him again.
I already left a review but I wanted to clarify. I took him in the summer of 2022. I finished with an A but you have to understand concepts and memorize notes because his tests are short answer and fill in the blank. I took him in the summer so that means that the classes were 2 hrs and 45 min with some breaks in between.
Prof. Alford's class is straightforward but challenging. The exams focus on understanding concepts rather than memorization. Using unstuck study alongside the free textbook can really help with prep. Overall, a rewarding class for engaged students.
The guy is great. He actually teaches the class and you will learn many important things in this class. He wants you to show up and give him effort in his class. He tells many funny stories, and you will be entertained.
he's such a good professor. he really does explain things in a way to help students understand. although his class isn't mandatory attendance, you really have to go. he lectures every class and you have to write everything down because his tests are all written questions. love the class tho. if you'll go to class, take him.
love Dr. Alford, I truly learned so much in his class. His test are hard but if you really put in the effort you will be fine. All test are short answer. The test are only like 8 questions but there are like 3 parts to each question and he lets you choose 2/3 to answer so choose the 2 you are more confident on.
