Absolutely amazing professor! Makes lectures very interesting. Class is more of a conversation. Tests are sorta easy if you pay attention in class. I would definitely recommend taking his course!
Matt is a great professor. He has a passion for history and wants to get his students involved. He is always available to talk to if you need help. He tries to keep his class engaged by bringing music/photos into his lectures.
Matt is awesome! Makes the class really really interesting. This was the only class that I didn't skip. Loves teaching and is very very helpful. I would recommend taking anything he teaches!
Matt is an incredibly engaging and creative teacher. He gives students insight into the lives of lesser known historical figures in a way that reshapes our understanding of history.
He teaches in a caring manner where he emphasizes and separates history into different categories which helps better in the learning process. Every other week you have to write a short, easy essay based on articles, but it's not big deal. The tests are all short answer or essay but he gave the terms/essay question before the tests.
Prof Andrews is a great teacher! The class is a very low maintenance kind of class. Though it is a lecture, and attendance is not required, I don't mind going to class every time. There is minimal homework and an average amount of reading. I def. recommend him to anyone!
Without a doubt the best professor I've had at UNC. Lectures are entertaining and fun, but also full of good information. Matt is super helpful. Very highly recommended.
Professor Andrews' lectures are interesting and well organized. TA's graded everything in my class so make sure you go to recitation with something to say. Great class to take for history requirement!
He is very kind and keeps content interesting and upbeat. He is a fair grader.
Amazing teacher. Very aware of the students he is teaching and engages everyone with a respectful peer like demeanor. Great lectures that really present a story that is worth while. Didn't miss a class though attendance was not mandatory. Very helpful and understanding.
I am not interested in history at all and at first dreaded having to fill a history class, but Professor Andrews makes it fun, interesting, and relevant. I loved how he picked out fun stuff from history to talk about. Some of the readings were uninteresting, but overall it was a GREAT course and highly recommended.
Great Professor. Would definitely recommend taking any one of his classes
Dr. Andrews is one of the best history instructors I have ever encountered. He makes everything interesting and is extremely engaging and knowledgeable in his field.
Very engaging lecturer and really knows his stuff.
Such a great professor!! I highly recommend his class. He knew what he was talking about and engaged us in his lectures. He's also really good looking ;)
Very good lecturer, really engages and cares about the material, and wants his class to understand it. Makes the material seem very interesting and important. The grading is very straightforward and fair.
This class and Dr. Andrews were two of the best things that happened to my college career.
Extremely interesting and funny. Very open to opinions that contradict his own and actually encourages students to share diverging viewpoints. Makes it easy/not awkward to participate in a large lecture class. Attendance wasn't mandatory, but I genuinely wanted to go to class. A very interesting lecturer. Be sure to take lots of notes.
One of the best teachers I've had at Carolina, he's a really great lecturer and as long as you take a lot of notes and work hard on the essays, you should do fine. I liked his class so much that I'm taking another one of his next semester.
Literally one of the best professors I have had at UNC Chapel Hill. His lectures are so engaging, and he really cares about his students understanding the material. I know people who aren't even enrolled in the class but come to lectures just to listen. I took his 128 class, and now I am in 140. Take him for any history class you can!
Feel so grateful to meet Dr. Andrews and the class for my first year in UNC. He is knowledgeable, and also his presentation is engaging. You don't even need to read the textbook if you can go to every class. Grade is very straightforward and is not hard to get an A. Only two essays and one final. Easy+fun.
Literally one of the best teachers I've had at UNC! His lectures are really interesting even if you don't like history (and he's definitely not bad to look at) I took him for 128 and 140
Greatest professor I have ever had. Phenomenally motivated to teach students and lectures the course content extraordinarily well. Very funny, personable, and learned. If you can, take EVERY History class with Dr. Andrews. Looks Great! Sounds Great! Can't lose!
Andrews was a really cool professor. Be prepared to be taught history from an angle you're probably not used to. He focuses less on the battles and political events and more on how history affects people. Very interesting class, awesome guy that knows how to keep students engaged.
Interesting lectures, not too much homework
Andrews is such a great teacher. He does his lectures in a way that make it so easy to take good clear notes and he has a great balance of humor and seriousness. You learn a lot in his course and I am not sure I will take a better course in college than his Sports and American History class. If you can get a class with Andrews, take it.
Prof. Andrews is a very gifted lecturer. Presents history as an interesting story, tying everything together rather than just presenting a bunch of facts and dates. Attendance is vital to success. Very approachable, humble guy. Two big papers each worth 25% of your grade. The TAs grade these fairly tough, so take seriously. Definitely rec.
Great lectures. Felt really engaged in class. Andrews loved what he was teaching. He was also funny at times. The books he assigns are interesting to read, though some are a little long. The essay topics are rather broad which can be helpful and are not too hard. Attendance was not mandatory but class is interesting enough to keep you attending.
Sport and American History with Andrews was a great class with an entirely new outlook on the effect of sports regarding America's evolution. Andrews is a great lecturer and will help you out whenever you need it! TA's are a different story unfortunately. If you luck out with your TA, you'll love this class!
Dr. Andrews is great! His lectures are very clear and interesting. The grading comes from two big papers, the final and participation from the recitation. Attendance is not necessary if you'd rather just read all of the book (just go to class). Would definitely recommend you take any history course available with him!
Professor Andrews was my favorite professor I've ever had. I view history in a totally new light because of his amazing lectures; he tells history from such a unique, insightful perspective. I truly looked forward to his class. His TA's were great, but hard graders. I plan to take many more of Professor Andrews' classes. DEFINITELY take him!
Just like all of these reviews say- he's wonderful. HOWEVER---- his TAs are incredibly hard graders and ruined my GPA. I was knowledgeable of the material, and can write english essays well, but was ultimately screwed over because the TA did not like my style as I was not used to writing history essays.
All of the grading is done by your TA, but I really enjoyed his lectures. I have never really been a fan of history, but his lectures were enjoyable and I learned a lot. I would definitely take another class with him.
Dr. Andrews is an incredible lecturer. He always kept class very interesting, and I looked forward to attending class (even though I don't usually like history). He is a really great professor, and you won't regret taking any of his classes. Everyone in my class clapped for him on the last day of class; he is definitely respected by his students.
A really great professor. If I could take another class with him, I'd do so immediately. He's very generous, his class isn't too difficult (2 essays and a final-- very fair), and he's quite a knowledgeable man. Above all, his lectures are inspirational, fantastic, amazing, etc. I'd definitely recommend him as a professor. He's one of the best.
Very good lecturer, class was very engaging and informative. Even if you are not a big history fan his lectures will keep you interested. Kept class interesting by encouraging discussions and showing videos. Tests and papers were straightforward, but reading was necessary.
andrews is the man i really want to take more of his classes
This was the third class that I had taken with Andrews and it was just as good as the previous two. Great professor, consistently keeping his students engaged. I spent much of this semester talking to him in his office about course content and it was very rewarding. He gives good feedback and loves to converse with students. Must take class!
Take any class you can with him!!
Dr. Andrews is amazing. He makes class fun and interesting. He's super engaging and really passionate about the subject. If you have the chance to take a class with him, DO IT!
The TAs did all the grading (2 papers, recitation, final) but Andrews' lecture were awesome. I always enjoyed the class because it was fun and he kept it interesting. He really knows his stuff and asks repeatedly if anyone has any questions. Best lecturer I've had.
By far the best lecturer at UNC. I would take any class with him.
This is the second class I have taken with him. He is a great lecturer, and keeps it interesting. However, all of the grading is up to the TAs, and they can be VERY tough graders. He is a great guy, but don't expect great grades. I didn't use the textbook.
Andrews is by far my favorite professor at UNC. His class is well structured and his lectures have an easy to follow outline. He assigns an average amount of reading for a History course, but all the reading is super interesting. Will take again for sure!
THE BEST professor I have ever had. His lectures are engaging and it is always easy to pay attention.
He's awesome, engaging, and funny. The class was interesting and fairly easy!
I LOVED Professor Andrews. He is the best professor I've had at UNC and an amazing person. Plus, he's not that bad to look at during class. He's super personable and dreamy.
Dr. Andrews is honestly the best professor I have had at UNC. His lectures are so interesting that I don't even feel the time pass. Even though the class is huge, he encourages participation and questions. He is also super helpful during office hours. I would highly recommend that you take his class before you leave UNC!
Dr. Andrews is a fantastic professor and made my first semester at UNC a much more positive experience. His lectures are well-planned, clear, and he stops and pauses multiple times to get questions/comments from the class. I decided to minor in history because of this class (128). If you get the chance, definitely take any of his classes.
I think the other reviews sum up Matt Andrew's classes pretty well. His lectures are absolutely phenomenal, he's a down to earth guy who is willing to help if you need it, and his class is super interesting. The TAs grade everything which was sort of hit or miss.
He's a good guy and his lectures are interesting, but your grade completely depends on what TA you get so good luck there.
Dr. Andrews is THE best lecturer at UNC, hands down. However, all essays are graded by TA's, which is always subjective. His class was definitely the highlight of my semester though, and I'll definitely be taking another of his classes. Genuinely great guy
Dr. Andrews is one the best teachers/ professors I have ever had. You will no doubt enjoy the class (his lectures are always awesome) even if the material doesn't seem that interesting to you. The best class I've taken at UNC and the most fun I've had listening to a lecture. If you can take a class w/ Dr. Andrews, TAKE IT!!
Professor Andrews is the best professor I have ever had. His lectures were so inspirational and interesting that I am now considering a history minor. We had three papers, some reading for homework, and a final; not bad at all. This class was the highlight of my semester. Oh, and he is super hot too, which makes lecture even better.
Awesome lectures, fun person! Its a great class, 3 papers and then the final. Also short (and easy) quizzes in recitations, which do not happen every week. The TA's grade everything so I guess your grade depends on them more then him. But they all seam to not grade really hard. Deff would recommend 110%
Dr. Andrews is THE BEST professor at UNC! If you don't take at least one of his classes you are wasting your tuition!
Professor Andrews is honestly my favorite professor at UNC. He clearly outlines what is expected in the syllabus. You have three papers and an essay final- all graded by TA's. However, if you make an effort and go to the TA's office hours you should be fine. Andrews is a fantastic lecturer and I will definitely be taking another one of his courses!
Amazing lecturer. Would definitely take again!
I took this class with Dr. Andrews last semester, and I think it is still by far my favorite class that I have taken at UNC. He makes his history lectures into an amazing story about the past that keeps your attention. I thoroughly enjoyed going to class, and I definitely will take another one of his classes if I'm given the chance.
Dr. Andrews was my favorite professor my first semester at UNC! His lectures are engaging and have a clear outline. I am not a history person, but I looked forward to going to his class! He stops several times during lecture to ask for questions. He is genuinely passionate about the subjects he is teaching and is a super smart guy!
This was my fourth class with Dr. Andrews. Enjoyed going to class everyday. HIST220 was History of the Olympic Games - his first time teaching the subject and I thought he did a fantastic job. Likewise, I had an excellent TA, which made my experience even better than I could have expected. Any class you find with Andrews, TAKE IT.
Dr. Andrews is incredible, the best lecturer at UNC hands-down. He's so passionate about all things history and loves interacting with his students both during and after class. Absolutely take him if you can!
Dr. Andrews is one of the best lecturers at UNC. The material he teaches on makes it easy, but he always keeps you interested. However, I rated him as 4 toughness because your grade is highly dependent on TA. Mine was great but was a tough grader on the papers and the final. Absolutely take classes with Andrews, they are slightly difficult but fun.
Andrews is a great guy! Interesting class taught by the highs and the lows of American History. Two essays, One Final, Quizzes every recitation. 10/10 Recommend!!
Dr. Andrews is an amazing lecturer, never boring. Class is reasonably paced, he often stops to take questions and makes sure no one is lost. These are all very important in a lecture heavy class.
Probably the only professor that could make history engaging for me. Super funny and tries to tell a story instead of simply lecturing. Cares about if you are learning and understanding the material. Your grade is dependent on TA's like most history classes however.
I was extremely hesitant going into sports history as a person who is not interested in neither history or sports but Andrews made every lecture extremely interesting and engaging. Essays are heavily weighted so if you're not the best writer, I would not recommend. If you pay attention in lecture, you will do well in quizzes in recitation!
Like most of these reviews say, Andrews is an amazing lecturer. He makes the topics at hand very interesting and I was never bored. The course is tough, however, as it's entirely dependent on tough-grading TAs. The final also kind of was a monster to get through. 2 papers; final with short answer, short essay, and long essay; quiz every recitation
As someone who wasn't really into sports, Professor Andrews is really fun and a truly engaging lecturer who made the history surrounding sports really interesting to learn! There is recitation every other week with a pretty easy quiz. Only downfall of the class is that there are only a few graded assignments and the TA's are pretty tough graders.
He's a really great lecturer and makes sports history (something I really don't care about) seem pretty interesting. Not a lot of work during the semester and you don't have to do the reading if you go to class. Your grade does depend on your TA though.
Professor Andrews has by far been my favorite professor I've had at UNC. He is so passionate about sports history and he tells his lectures like stories which make students come to class even though attendance is not mandatory. However, your grade is solely dependent on your TA so hope you get a good one! 100% recommend taking this class!!!
Professor Andrew is wonderful! His lectures are hilarious and super informative. He does a great job of giving us all of the facts and allowing us to form our OWN opinions. My T.A was great, but I have heard this wasn't the case for the other ones. T.A's grade EVERYTHING so it may or may not be an easy A for your specific T.A. GREAT COURSE!
My favorite class last semester. He doesn't take attendance but his lectures are so interesting and entertaining I wanted to go to every one. Grades are based off two papers and the finals. So if you have an easy TA it's an easy A.
Andrews best history professor I've ever had. He's hilarious. Never a dull moment during his lectures. It honestly all comes down to your TA since they grade your work. There was a lot of writing involved in this course, but the material is not hard to follow. Quizzes based on lecture, which is usually every other week. HIGHLY recommend.
Professor Andrews is most definitely the best professor at UNC-CH. He is an amazing lecturer and there was never a dull moment during his class. Would recommend to anyone interested in sports or history but would also recommend to anyone who wishes to have a genuine professor. Class is moderately hard because of TAs grading and expect to read.
By far the best history professor at UNC. Maybe even the best professor outright. He does a great job of making lectures easy to follow by forming them around stories about historical events and figures. As someone who has sat through numerous verbose and boring history lectures, trust me when I say Dr. Andrews is the BEST.
Best professor at UNC.
He is easily one of my favorite professors I've ever had. He always makes time for questions during lectures. Class isn't mandatory but if you don't come you'll miss out on a lot. His lectures will tell you everything you need to know. He tells great stories about Olympic athletes while also telling you about history. I really enjoyed this class!
Andrews' lectures are always fun and engaging, and the material is super interesting. There were three papers, three history digs (short 1-2 page writing assignments), short quizzes (lowest dropped), recitation and the final (Olympic locations/years, IDs and an essay). Grades are very dependent on your TA, but would definitely recommend Andrews!!
Great lecturer. A lot of writing and reading but the lectures are always interesting. Cool course and learned a lot. Matthew Andrews is the man.
i cannot say enough good things about this man he is by far my favorite professor at unc. his lectures are so interesting and made me look forward to coming to class. dont have to read the textbook bc he covers the material even better in lecture. also kinda a dilf
Easily one of my favorite professors at UNC and HIST 220 is my favorite class that I've taken at UNC! Really effective lecturer and makes you want to go to class. Covers everything that you need to know and explains it all very clearly. Highly recommend!
He is the best of the best! It is totally worth it to take a class with him if you can. The lectures are very thoughtful and interesting. Reading isn't mandatory to pass but is very interesting. He really care about the students as well!
andrews is a true gem. phenomenal class - but not as easy as everyone says. it all depends on your TA and if you have a harsh grader, it's most definitely not an easy A
My favorite prof at UNC hands down. Attendance is not mandatory but his lectures are so amazing that I WANT to go to his class. Your grade is off of two papers, a midterm, and a final so your grade is dependent on your TA. Andrews is hilarious and great to talk to outside of class. Even if you aren't interested in baseball TAKE THIS CLASS
This was my first Andrews class. The legends are true! Every lecture was a treat: in-depth, packed with pictures and videos, thought-provoking. No matter what you think you know about basketball, 585 will teach you countless new things. Essays and readings require some dedication, but no problem at all if you're a basketball lover. So worth taking.
Nothing to say that hasn't already been said. Professor Andrews is the best. I consistently get chills during his lectures.
The best professor at UNC hands down. I am sad I only got to take one class with him. A lot of my friends would take every class he offered, even though they werent history majors. Intelligent, funny, interesting, not too much homework, interesting essay prompts.... my biggest regret at unc is not taking more classes with this gem of a human
One of the best professors I've had at UNC. His class is extremely interesting and he is super passionate. Highly recommend.
Dr. Andrews is the best professor at UNC. He is incredibly knowledgeable on everything he teaches. While attendance is not taken, you should go to every class because of how captivating Dr. Andrews' lectures are. A few papers, no midterm, and a final exam: the papers are graded harsh, but fair, so if you are a good writer you will be good.
Andrews is the GOAT. There is never a boring lecture, and he is super kind, funny, and accessible outside class to talk history, sports, or both. However, your grade is HIGHLY dependent on your TA. If you write well, you will be fine; if not, go to the Writing Center for help on your papers. Overall, do not graduate from UNC without taking Andrews.
Professor Andrews is my favorite professor so far at UNC. I decided to minor in history since he offers so many classes! He is so passionate about the material that you won't want to skip his lectures. The grading is solely based on the difficulty of your TA, so that is the only downside to his classes.
History of Olympics with Professor Andrews is my favorite class that I have ever taken at UNC. His lectures are actually really interesting and he presents material very well. There is a quiz every week in recitation to make sure that you are attending lectures so if you don't go to class you won't pass.
Dr. Andrews is a great lecturer, which is good because you have to attend every class to be prepared for the final. There are several papers throughout the semester that are graded by TAs.
He was very nice and interesting. I found him easy to pay attention to and he is an excellent lecturer. But he also discusses a lot of violent topics in HIST220 and he uses some really gruesome images in his presentations. He also assigned some rather graphic movies as homework. If you're squeamish or easily anxious, just be careful.
Dr. Andrews is great. Most of the kids in my class are literally taking the class just because they've already had him and know they'll love whatever classes he teaches or they've heard about his reputation and want to take one of his classes. Engaging lectures, really awesome teacher. I highly recommend taking one of his classes.
DR. ANDREWS IS THE BEST. His lectures are organized well and incredibly engaging, no matter the topic. 11/10 recommend. He is funny and caring, even asynchronously. Really awesome guy and course all around
Prof. Andrews is the best. The lectures are amazing and he clearly loves what he teaches.
Literally LOVE Andrews. He does an extremely good job making lecture material very interesting and ties it into such relevant, interesting topics. I'm hoping to take another class taught by him in the future. LOVE THIS CLASS. Grade is mostly papers, but they're pretty easy to write since the material is so interesting.
Everyone loves Prof. Andrews. I finally took one of his classes and it's easy to see why. The lectures are actually super interesting- it's like sitting down and listening to sports trivia, but then you realize you're learning history too. Graded by 7 online quizzes, 2 papers, and a final. Easy A, and super enjoyable class.
Dr. Andrews is an amazing teacher. He's very accessible outside of class. I had incredible conversations with him in his office hours. His lectures were also incredible. Definitely learned a lot from this class. I will definitely take more classes with him.
I would take all my classes with Professor Andrews if I could. He is an amazing lecturer, and if you go to lecture and pay attention you will do well. He inspired me to think more deeply about the content, and sparked an interest in something that was supposed to be a class I didn't care about. Take a class with Prof Andrews!
My second class taken with Andrews. Gives amazing lectures that are rarely boring. Majority of your grade comes from 2 papers and the final which were graded by TAs, but the TAs are typically really fair about grades. I cannot say enough nice things about Andrews and his classes. Take his classes if you can!!
Professor Andrews is a great guy. Did not know I could learn even more about sports but he is just that great of a professor. Unfortunately, the grade you get is not dependent on him, but your TA, who grades 3 papers that consists of about 80% of your grade. But Andrews is always willing to help outside of class and provide aid when needed.
I took Dr. Andrews class for my Gen Ed credit (I am not a history major). He is probably the best lecturer I have ever had, you should absolutely take his class. I am not super big into history, but he is so passionate and good at teaching that I really loved this class.
AMAZING CLASS. Professor Andrews is so engaging and so kind and truly makes his lectures that entertaining. Just like everyone else said. Took 585 for US credit, I would've taken it for free.
One of UNC's best professors! His basketball class was a MUST TAKE for any student. Andrews is a phenomenal lecturer and very knowledgeable about the subject. He gives great feedback and the class recitations are very interesting to help build off the class conversation. Three papers, some mini quizzes, and a final. Might be my favorite class here!
This is my second class taken with Andrews and I will continue to take them until there are no other classes to take. He is an amazing professor who gives interesting lectures and if you put effort in you will easily get an A. Genuinely cares about his students and everyone should take a class with him!!
History 362- Baseball and American History, is by far my favorite class I've taken at Carolina. Dr. Andrews is awesome, and always provides great lectures and discussion points for each class. Highly recommend taking this, or any other course Dr. Andrews teaches. You won't be disappointed. The books/assigned readings are super manageable too.
Taking the Olympic Games class with Andrew Matthews was phenomenal. Can't say enough good things. Even with being online, his class was super interesting - I was constantly sharing things I learned with my friends. Highly recommend taking any class you can with him!
I don't have enough positive things to say about Dr. Andrews. He is brilliant, interesting, passionate and has a genuine love for teaching. Regardless of whether you like sports history, take a class with Dr. Andrews. He's the best lecturer I have ever had. Just to show how beloved he isattendance is optional, but the class was ALWAYS full.
Best professor of all time. Only graded on three papers and showing up to recitation. Very interesting material and pretty easy class
Best professor at UNC hands down. I'm getting a history minor just to take all of his classes. His lectures are SO good and he makes class so interesting every time. He loves meeting people outside of class and is just overall such a cool guy. Class isn't technically mandatory but you need to go to pass biweekly quizzes and write the essays
Top 5 teacher in my life. I'm doing a history minor now just because of Andrews. Interesting, funny lectures. The content is some of the best you'll find at UNC. There is a decent amount of reading and graded only on essays and short/easy quizzes. Only teacher that I've ever seen receive full applause on LDOC. Take any class you can with him.
Dr. Andrews is probably the best teacher I've had at Carolina. His lectures are delivered so well it doesn't really seem like class , but instead story time with Matt twice a week. Dr. Andrews is always accessible and you can tell he really cares about his course subject and students. Would HIGHLY recommend taking at least one of his courses.
Do yourself a favor. Take a class with Matt Andrews during your time at UNC. Not only will it be one of the best classes you've ever taken, its interesting, not difficult, and hes amazing. I declared the history minor so I could keep taking the classes and know like 5 people who have done the same. Just trust me, if you're debating doing it, do it!
Matt Andrews is my favorite professor at UNC. He's an exceptional lecturer that makes his content fun and relevant. I do highly recommend taking his History of Basketball Class, HIST 585. It's not too difficult of course but is super interesting and does make you think a bit more than his Olympics class.
Having now completed 8 semesters at UNC, I can confidently say Prof. Andrews is the best professor I have had here and this is the best class I have taken. As a basketball fan, the content is interesting and Prof. Andrews does an amazing job of explaining the racial dynamics behind the history of the sport. The books he assigns are amazing as well!
If you are a basketball fan, take his class! Professor Andrews is very knowledgeable and passionate about the sport and gives insightful and thought provoking lectures. The class itself is a lot of work as it is based on 3 papers graded by a TA and reading 4 books throughout the semester for recitation.
Prof. Andrews is one of UNC's best professors. In addition to being an amazing lecturer and possessing an incredible knowledge of the curriculum, he is a very nice and accessible person. All of his classes are great regardless of size or topic, and I would absolutely recommend him to any student, even if you've never once watched a sporting event.
Best professor I ever had. His lectures made the class seem to go by in 20 minutes because they were so interesting, engaging, and full of energy. He is extremely knowledgeable and has a gift of conveying information in a way that makes it entertaining. He is also great to talk to outside of class if you ever have questions or just want to chat.
Professor Andrews is by far my favorite professor at UNC. His lectures are unmatched and he is really fair with grades. There is a lot of reading but you don't need to do all of it. 2 Essays and a final which is not that much work. Recitation participation matters. Easy A class if you pay attention in lecture.
One of the best professors at UNC. Grades on a few things (essays, easy quizzes, final, and recitation participation). Grading was a bit harder because TA graded tougher, but she was still amazing as well. Lectures felt like a break from a long day of classes and studying because of how great they are. If you can take one of his classes, TAKE IT!
Wonderful and funny professor who provides very detailed lectures. He really deserves his great reputation. This is the second course I've taken with him and it was just as engaging and interesting. A few assignments but none are particularly hard. Would highly recommend to any history or non-history major.
Yeah, this guy is the goat. One of those classes which you actually look forward to. You just sit back and listen to a knowledgeable guy talk about sports stories he clearly loves. Get off Rate My Professor and just sign up already.
It helps that he teaches really cool classes but he could make pottery entertaining. Super good guy, loves to talk about anything remotely related to the course after class/during office hours. Will be taking more of his classes.
Literally everything good ever said about Matt Andrews is true. His lectures are engaging, he's so easy to look at, and he's a genuinely kind-hearted person. He cares about people, and not just his students. He cares about social issues and change, and you can tell that by the way he lectures and communicates with his students.
Professor Andrews is my favorite lecturer I've had at UNC. Papers and assignments are very manageable, although the difficulty of grading entirely depends upon your TA. I highly recommend taking any of Andrews' courses for anyone looking to fulfill a History or gen-ed requirement!
Prof Andrews is as amazing as people say. I took this class for an easy gen ed and was sucked into every lecture. You are graded on only 2 papers, a final, and a few quizzes, and your TA determines your grade. However, andrews is always available to help and chat with students. You can just tell every student in his class loves him.
I only took this class to fill hours and it was by far my favorite class this semester! Every lecture just absolutely amazing which made writing the papers super easy. If you ever have the opportunity to take a class with Prof Andrews, do it!
Probably the best professor at UNC available. Amazing lectures, unique and creative teachings and unmatched personality.
Best professor ever.
Best professor at UNC! Whether you enjoy history, sports or none of the above, Professor Andrews is an amazing lecturer and engages with the material and students well. He provides a nuanced perspective and has shifted the way I view sports in America. This is my third course with Professor Andrews and hopefully not my last.
Good professor, although lectures need to all be attended because lecture slides include no info. Also TA's are HARD! If you're looking for an easy filler, this is probably not it...
The professor is amazing! But (you must notice this "but" because) you will suffer in this course if you want to achieve a good grade and you unluckily have a harsh TA. My friend and I both encounter harsh TAs. Awful experience. And professor is really good, he said to his TAs that you can offer extra credit, but my TA said she prefer not :)
I would honestly have gone to this class just to listen to the lectures even if I wasn't in the class, that's how great his lectures are. If you like sports at all, do yourself a favor and take a class with him. The TAs lowkey can suck and they grade harshly, and there is a fair bit of reading, so it's not the easiest A around, but 1000% worth it.
I loved this class so much that I actually went in person even though he posted the lectures online afterward. Dr. Andrews is thoughtful and passionate enough to cover some tough topics really well. There are 3 papers and a lot of readings, but the work is worth it. I got so much out of this class and I would take it again if I could.
Absolutely love Matt Andrews as a professor! His lectures are so engaging. However, beware all your papers are graded by the TA's and I got stuck with a hard-grader and will probably end up with a B like most others with the same TA. Its a luck of a draw if you get an easy grader or not. The class itself it so enjoyable though!
You don't have to love sports to love this class. It covers sports but more so its relationship with international relations, politics, gender, drugs, patriotism, finance, etc. Also, all professors have a thing or two to learn from Prof. Andrews. One of the best lecturers and profs I've had at UNC.
Professor Andrews is a great lecturer, and the content of the course is extremely interesting if you're a sports or history person. Your grade will heavily depend on your TA, as your grade is mostly comprised of essays that are subjectively graded.
Matt Andrews was a great professor and great lecturer! Every one of his lectures was very engaging! However, your grade in this class is determined heavily by TAs. My TA was a very hard grader in comparison to other TAs which was disappointing because his ridiculous grading took away from the engagement and great content in this class.
The lecturing GOAT, what else is there to say that others haven't said yet. You're graded by a TA; there's 2 essays, recitation participation, and a final where the prompt is given ahead of time. Take this class to get a new insight on the world of American sports.
This is the fourth class I've taken with Dr. Andrews and every one of them is amazing. There is really no reason any UNC student, regardless of major, shouldn't carve out the time in their time at Carolina to take one of his classes. Insanely interesting, well designed, and impactful, you'd be doing yourself a disfavor if you passed up the chance.
I absolutely loved Prof. Andrews. His lectures were extremely engaging and I enjoyed the course content. Lectures weren't recorded at the beginning of the semester, though, so make sure you attend class. Quizzes were directly from lectures. Paper grading depends on your TA so hope you get lucky there. If you attend class you'll do well.
I would HIGHLY recommend taking any of Matt's classes if you have an interest in sports & can use them for a gen-ed credit. That being said, do not expect a free A out of his class. While the final isn't too hard, the midterm papers are graded (fairly, but) quite hard. Unless you need a perfect GPA, Id say his lectures and personality are worth it.
Andrews is a great lecturer and frankly it's pretty cool to get credit for learning about awesome sports stories. My only problem with the class is that there aren't many assignments and they're graded by TAs, so getting an A isn't easy despite the class feeling easy.
I am going to take all of Dr. Andrews classes if I can. Easily the best lecturer at UNC and I really enjoyed some of the personal touch he added to our class. One of the most welcoming and best overall professors here!
This dudes a legend and easily the most engaging prof I've had. Never cared for baseball but he's inspired me to maybe watch some this year. Caveat is that there are a couple mildly graded essays but even then the class is still way worth it. Gonna try and take another class w him.
Love Matt. ~60% of grade if from three papers which might be difficult if you're not a strong writer. Definitely go to office hours if you need help, Matt's very welcoming. Lectures are enjoyable and quizzes are easy if you attend lecture.
Hands down my favorite class and favorite professor at UNC. It's the type of class you don't have to attend but still go every time because the lectures are that good. There's a lot of reading for this class, but almost all of it was interesting. You're definitely missing out if you don't take one of Andrews' classes.
Prof. Andrews is a great lecturer, but an even better guy. He truly loves what he does, and his knowledge on the sports world is unmatched. He's very down-to-earth and is one of the best professors I've had while at UNC. Although the papers are a little tough, the final exam was very fair and allowed for students to recover. Would Recommend.
One of the best professors at UNC. Engaging lectures, even if attendance is mandatory. Lots of reading, but worth it. Unstuckstudy was a huge help for preparing.
Probably the best professor you'll ever have. Give this man a raise. There are papers and quizzes but if you go to class and turn them in on time, you'll be fine.
Professor Andrews' lectures are always engaging and interesting. Attendance isn't mandatory. Your final grade is heavily determined by 3 papers - all of which are graded by your T.A., so consider that. I would recommend this class again though.
One of my favorite classes this semester! His lectures are never boring. One book quiz, 8 online quizzes, 2 shorter papers, 1 longer research paper, 2 extra credit movie nights (the points go to your overall letter grade!), and 5 extra credit points on your final. I have learned so much about the Olympics and will never look at them the same way...
Matt continues to be the best. Take this class if you can, the information is both entertaining and very important history to learn.
Matt Andrews is awesome at lecturing... however this is not a free A or easy gen ed. The course requires some things that are a bit rediculous such as reading a 400 page book that is quizzed on. There are 2 papers around 6 pages long and then a research paper that is 7 pages long throughout the semester that take a lot of research.
Hands-down the coolest professor I've had at UNC. Lectures were really interesting and often felt like you were listening to a story. This definitely wasn't a free A class and required a fair amount of reading and writing, but Matt provides a good amount of extra credit opportunities for students to boost their grades.
This was my second class with Andrews and it was just as good as my first. Lectures are engaging and the assignments give you a lot of creative freedom. I was never stressed about grades in this class, allowing me to come to class each day with enthusiasm. Andrews has a great sense of humor and fosters a comfortable class environment. A must-take.
I wouldn't say I care a lot about sports, but I genuinely enjoyed this class because Dr. Andrews is so great. His lectures were engaging and easy to follow. Most of your grade is determined by 3 essays (2 with a prompt and 1 research), but they are all are laid out clearly and aren't super time consuming to complete.
Dr. Andrews is the best. His lectures are so freaking interesting like one time he pranked us that this guy died during the Olympics but he didn't. Im getting a history minor to be with him And hes hot. There are three paper which are graded hard (prob depends on TA too) and then the final you have to study for. Read Rome 1960 it'll help with paper.
An awesome guy and I really enjoyed every single one of his lectures. Definitely a good amount of reading and writing, but nothing crazy. Attend class because it is interesting - not mandatory. It is necessary to attend recitations and participate, make sure the TA knows who you are because it is a large part of your grade. GO TO THE EXTRA CREDIT!!
By far the best professor at UNC. The class was not very hard if you go to lectures (and the lectures are optional, but still always full- shows what a great teacher he is). It can be dependent on your TA, so I'd recommend going into your TA's office hours to clearly understand their guidelines/expectations. I never really did readings and was fine
I LOVE him he is one of the best teachers I've had at UNC. Only complaint is that your grade is based upon 3 papers that your TA rips to shreds. But he gave a lot of extra credit that boosted my grade from an A- to an A. Lectures are not mandatory but I went everyday and took good notes. I still thought the exam tested small details and concepts.
Can't say enough good things-- syllabus was abundantly clear, lectures were very interesting, and this course is overall just so helpful to understanding how the 60s impact American life today. Took for the FC-POWER Gen Ed as a STEM major and still really loved the class. Also, all assignments were completion-based, so no stressing about grades.
Amazing lecturer. Even though this was his first semester teaching HIST384, the lectures were great and the expectations were clear in the syllabus. Take a class with him if you can.
Absolutely incredible, every lecture is a performance
Easily the best professor I've ever had. My sole complaint is that your TA's determine your grade and all of it is essay based + the final. The Rome 1960 quiz didn't cover the essentials of the book and it's 5% of your grade. I learned so much content in this course and I loved the lectures, I went to class because I wanted to. Def take his course.
Loved the lectures and found myself wanting to come every week.
I love Professor Andrews teaching style and his classes!! He is so nice and easy to talk to and his classes are interesting. I didn't take this class for anything, I had just heard how good it was and I 100% agree. Take this class, it's awesome!!
Andrews is an excellent professor who gives very interesting lectures. However, if you're hoping for a free A, this course is not for you. None of the coursework is that difficult, but the TAs grade harshly.
Dr. Andrews is such a great professor! He keeps students engaged and makes every lecture interesting. There are only readings for bi-weekly discussion groups that are pretty easy. The TAs can be kind of harsh on grading, but the class is still so worth it. You'll love this class even if you don't care about baseball!
I LOVE PROFESSOR ANDREWS. cannot wait to take every class he offers. For HIST 585, there was a grading policy where if you did the minimum assignments you got a B+ and you could "go for the A" by doing other assignments. His lectures are beyond captivating and I genuinely enjoyed them. Race and Basketball is so so cool, take this class!
Dr. Andrews is hands down the best professor I have ever had. Attendance is optional but the lectures were awesome. He clearly knows a lot about what he teaches and has a clear passion for sports history. Guaranteed good grade if you put in an ounce of effort. If you like basketball you have to take this class, it'll be one of your favorites.
Please take baseball & american history!! It is not hard to make an A. My favorite class at UNC!! & fav professor.
Literally the best lecturer I've had at my time at UNC. Content was super interesting too, and grading contract was more than fair. 11/10
Incredible professor, incredible lectures, and incredible ball knowledge.
Favorite professor I have had at UNC so far. Super kind, knowledgable, and funny. If you like baseball and need FC credit, take this class! The recitations can be slightly difficult but you will do well if you participate.
Dr. Andrews is an amazing professor! He makes every class so interesting and loves when students ask questions! The only downside is TAs grade everything and the one I had was a little bit of a tough grader. Overall I 100% recommend taking this class you won't regret it!!!!
Best professor I've ever had. Lectures were great, and I was entertained enough to pay attention at every lecture. Just take a class with him.
One of the best classes I have had at UNC. Basketball being my favorite sport made me very excited to go to lectures, and we got to pick our grade as long as we completed the essays and attended recitation. Lots of reading if you want to understand the lectures better, but overall a very fun class for gen ed credit.
Dr. Andrews is so entertaining and every lecture in his baseball class felt like I was watching a movie. You should definitely take one of his couses if you enjoy sports. My TA was a little harsh- she caused me to lose my 4.0 because of how she tore apart my essays- but I don't regret taking this class at all.
Great guy, let me rant about baseball for an hour in his office once. Class is great and lectures are really engaging, I went to class because I actually wanted to (shocker). Only gripe is that his TAs grade everything so it's not super fair when some students get awful TAs and others don't. I'd still take this class though he's incredible.
Matt Andrews is such a good lecturer and clearly enjoys his job. Please take a class with him if you get the chance. Recitations were kind of useless in my opinion but his grading system is very good
Best Professor OAT. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you still find yourself looking forward to his classes and actually wanting to go. Lectures are incredibly interesting and well-delivered, and it's very easy to get an A. Knew nothing about Baseball going it, and now I'm an expert on both the game's history and wider American history. 10/10 class.
Just brilliant. Best Professor at UNC by a mile, and the content of this course makes it even better. Great lectures, easy enough assignments, just a great guy. One of the few professors that you want to listen to for 3 hours a week, and would also want to grab a beer with. What a man, what a class.
Goated professor, everyone should take atleast one of his classes.
Professor Andrews, as noted by many others, runs a fun, interesting class, where it is easy to thrive. Lectures are engaging, and you have two papers and a final, along with participation. He teaches interesting content, I recommend the class.
I have but two regrets in life thus far: 1) texting her at 3am 2) not taking Dr. A's classes sooner
Amazing professor and he's truly loved by his students. The course itself is so interesting, especially if you love basketball, and the grading structure is designed for success. Your effort and engagement with the content translates directly to your grade. The final exam is just an essay that you will be well-prepared to write.
TAKE A CLASS WITH PROFESSOR ANDREWS IN YOUR TIME AT UNC. He is such a capitvating lecturer and the essays are not that difficult. Do it!!!!!! Olympics was so so cool.
Matt Andrews is a great person, and the lectures were interesting. However, for this class 67% of your grade is based on papers, and if you get a bad TA, as I did, you are SCREWED. I would not recommend taking a class with him if you can not pass fail it since this year he made his class significantly more difficult without the grading contract.
Amazing professor and great lectures, but the grading is honestly tough and since there are so few grades the final is stressful because you have to do well. Participation didn't matter but I always wanted to attend his class! Just go to your TA's office hours to get tips on how to do well on the essays. Also lots of readings.
The lectures were very interesting however the final is based on knowing key concepts which are not made clear. Study guide mentions the structure of the exam, not what to study, so you are going into the exam not know what to expect regardless of your notes are. Grade in class is largely based on 3 papers which are graded by TAs who can be tough.
Great professor, really cares about the class. Most of your grade is 2 essays and the final. TAs are super strict when grading. They'll always find ways to dock off points.
My favorite history professor at UNC! Dr. Andrews was my academic advisor for an internship as well. In both experiences he was such a caring, brilliant professor. He's well spoken and entertaining and makes his class content extremely relevant and interesting. Highly recommend. TAs grade everything, though, and they can be hit or miss.
Such a caring professor who has really interesting lectures!! Coursework was three essays and a final. The essays can be annoying if you have a bad TA, but go to office hours and work with them and you will be fine!! Extra credit opportunities give +2 points to your final grade so an A is very doable. Overall my favorite class this semester!
His reviews say it all: Andrews is an incredible lecturer and a great person during office hours. He offered a full 2% extra credit on final grades, and the final was very fair if you reviewed some Quizlets or took good notes. The TA grading on papers could be tough, but not incredibly unfair.
Wow. Professor Andrews was incredible! Coming from a stem major, I didn't think lectures could be so entertaining. The class is not an easy A. There are 3 papers that are graded harshly. Final was easier than the papers if you studied by the study guide. But class is worth it because of how great Professor Andrews was. Just enroll. You'll be fine.
