could never finish the hw. very unclear
my sister thinks hes hott haha oooooh
No Comments
he's cool, nice, easy and calm with students. no tricky on his tests.
Loves Pepsi, Costco, and surfing! Haha! Anyways, he is an awesome teacher. Learned a lot from this class. This subject is pretty hard to me, but he is really helpful. Homework assignments are 10 pts each, quizzes 24 pts each, exams 100 pts each and final ~200 pts. If you have the chance to take chem 180, definately take him! Highly recommended!
soooo boring! i like the subject too.... but its impossible to stay awake in his lectures... which r sooo important when it comes to this subject!! he knows his stuff and is very nice, and hes new so maybe he was just shy and will get better. overall an okay teacher
He really wants students that have trouble to utilize his office hours and he's always willing to spend extra time with you. Grades fairly, but if chem. doesn't come easily to you, then you need to put in extra effort to get an A in the class(ask questions, flashcards, office hours, extra homework, etc.). It helps that he's cute too! ;)
WORST OCC TEACHER. EVEN THOUGH HE'S YOUNG HE'S NOT RECOMMENDED! DOESN'T GIVE PARTIAL CREDIT AND IS PICKY WITH EVERYTHING. MOST LIKELY WAS PICKED ON AS A CHILD, SO NOW HE'S TAKING HIS REVENAGE OUT ON HIS STUDENTS. TEACHES LIKE HOW U WOULD READ A BOOK...NOT INTERESTING AT ALL!
he twitches every minute and says the word "so" every other sentence. not only does he suck as a teacher, he is very annoying!!!
worst class ever! gives multiple choice question on test and doesn't even put the right answer on the choices. you're suppose to not choose any of the given choices even though it says CHOOSE the correct answer...he has bad ethics
...the best way to describe the way he teaches is the same way he looks...STUPID!
Dr. Appel suxs big time!!!! Worst teacher ever!!! He is not helpful, and he never makes time for his studets outside of lab, or lecture. Not a fair grader, offering no partial credit at all. And he is not hot!!! comes to class unpreparied, and disorganized. constantly making mistakes, and making learing hard, and unclear.
chem is not an easy topic so you have to put the time into the class to make it. I didn't put enough time in but am still doing fair. He has multiple choice questions that are worth to many points compared to the problem solving ones but that shoudl help you!
This class is hard and the teacher is hard also! You better watch out! Because he gives you question that are not related to test book or the lecture note. So I don't know what advice to give you, except, good luck.
The teacher is not fun, but he's ok. The class is not easy, but it's not that hard. All the exams are based on his lectures and example problems. The calculation part is easy if you studied. The multiple choice part is kind a thinking. Usually, the last problem on the exam is the most tricky one. Overall, the class is ok.
Dr. A is awesome. Very helpful in lab and office hour if you take questions to him. I found the lectures helpful, sometimes a little dry, but other times funny. You get a ton of xtra cred, and the tests are STANDARD AND EAZY. Straight off of the practice problems. Usually one tricky problem on the tests, but he breaks it down into parts. Easy A.
he really knows how to teach. His lecture is really clear and easy to understand. He is really smart and he knows what he is doing. He helps a lot if u go to his office and ask questions.
Dr. Appel is very nice and a good teacher. To those students who said he is hard are actually wrong. I honestly recommended him for chem b/c he is an enthusiastic person and is friendly & nice in helping you. I really admire him and enjoy his class a lot. Chem. rocks. Good luck to those who will have him for Chem!
This professor is hard. The two rating below me, I m sure it is written by himself.
Compare to other Chem. professors in OCC, he is the worst. Although he know the subject well, his teaching skill is weak.
Through his early life experience; it seems interesting, but he is a boring and slow professor. In the lecture, you can't even whisper or asking questions to your neighbor. He wants "absolutely silence" while he is talking. And his hand writing is weird, watch out “g” and “s”.
this professor is NOT helpful at all. His lectures are boring, and he makes numerous, constant mistakes. he is disorganized and spacey. He is really more focused on his own life, rather than teaching. I feel he looks at teaching as just a job, and not really putting in all his effort to really help the students learn.
This man is so wishy-washy, he teaches one thing and tests you on an entirely different thing. Such a stickler. Hardley gives you a break on your grade and the exams are hard.
I am shocked by the neg. responses, I needed alot of help, I went to his office hours & he helped me.. the tutoring that OCC has, they are hard to understand, so he said he would tutor me during his office hours...what Prof. does that, I ended up dropping his class & all my classes due to being burned out, I am hoping to retake his class Spring 07'
The ones gave Appel a high rating are the geniuses that would ace any class and the groupie girls who thinks he's hot. I am interested in Chem, but he kills the subject with his boredom. He's the young PHD teacher who thinks he's above everyone and will not admit his faults. Will NOT correct his grading errors! Hard/tricky exams and a nitpicker!
What's with all the negative ratings? He's not that bad. Well I might be speaking too soon; it's only the beginning of the semester. He seems cool now, but he might turn around and show his evilness. I hope not. Dr. Appel, prove these people wrong!!!
He was cool at first but in the end he just rushed everything... i didn't like that fact that he said lab was self paced den he ended up grading the lab on a normal grading scale... suks for those who took thier time bein careful..
I can't believe that students grade Dr.Appel with (-)signs. He's great, very helpful. He even has office hours on Friday just open to help students with homeworks, that's very helpful. I love Chem, i took Dr.Laux before, but Appel is good too for Chem 180. Recommended to take his class.
this is chem 180 so of course it won't be a breeze. when you start getting into these upper division classes you have to expect to put more effort into these classes. Dr Appel loves chemistry and loves to teach you. He will help you in any way he can. His tests can be hard but is a great teacher. your not going to fine an EASY chem teacher so take
eff appel.... he's a cool guy but he has tricky tests.. i had laux for 130 and it was more straight forward, easier to learn, though fast pace... but appel is gargbage.. he's a cool guy though.. just garbage teacher
Dr. Appel is a very very nice teacher. he's willing to help all his student and wangt them to succeed, but the thing is, his lecture has nothing to do with his test. let just say the book is useless. probs in the book don't help with exams at all. easy lecture, hard test, great personality teacher. willing to do anything for his students.
This grading policy is really unfair. Just don't take him. Take Dr.laux. Waste of your money and your grade.
He's a cool guy and very good teacher as well. He always tries his best to help you understand stuffs. I agree that his exams are not easy but they're very helpful for you since in order to get good grades in any science subjects, you have to understand those subjects very clearly anyway. So can't say because of the hard exams and we blame on the
An excellent teacher. The most patient prof I've had. He schedules study sessions on his own time! And more than that, he imparts humor and charm into his lectures and makes a very difficult subject doable, and even fun! His grading is very fair. Tests are difficult (it's chemistry!), extra credit is ample, and yay for partial credit!
Good teacher a little hard but understandable. some of his questions on tests are confusing
appel is a super hard teacher. he'll take the time to help you if you go to him. hes a good guy, not the easiest of teachers.
Dr. Appel is easy on the eyes so it makes lecture less torturing. He is a FAIR teacher, does not give "favorites" biased grading nor students who are doing poorly. You have to do hw in this class and study, but then again it's chemistry so regardless of where you go it's not going to be an easy A. I recommend him (if you're a good student).
Confusing lectures.
my best best chemistry teacher. he's very detailed in both his lecture and his lab. his lab is very clear, and he will always be right there for you to ask questions.not a lot of homework.1 per chapter. quite easy. test are from hw and the examples of his lecture. easy test if u understand the concepts and study his study guide.
MR. Appel is so awesome! I've taken Chem in HS, and it was so confusing,& uninteresting. Appel is so easy to approach with questions, and he's so enthusiastic! Hwk 'R online, Labs are easy, but he's always around for any additional help. For sure he inspires me to love chem! Sometimes I think about maybe failing it just so I can take him again!
Not an easy A. It's possible to get an A but you need to work hard and show up to every class. His curves for tests help a lot for the C and below students, though not much for the A's (88= A, B= 76ish, C=65ish, D=57ish). He is a good teacher, but just has difficult tests. Nice guy though demands a lot from you.
great guy great teacher.it is chemistry so its gonna take some work. he is very easy going and very easy to approach so if you want to learn something i would take him
Has a lot of enthusiasm for the subject. Very knowlegable and willing to help students that do not understand material. Curves all of tests by the highest score achieved in class. Challenging still, so def. study outside class! Labs are fun and a pre-lab assig. required to be completed before coming to class. Keep up on work, or you'll fall behind.
Good class, he is very thorough and explains concepts well by relating them to more 'real world' example. Really likes orange juice and pepsi, will use those as examples a LOT(haha) He is very helpful if you need it! When I went into the class I thought I hated/was bad at chem but I came out feeling interested and confident in the subject matter.
Very enthusiastic teacher! self admittedly a bit of a nerd but loves pepsi and loves to surf. hes helpful pretty thorough HARD tests! but he gives lots of opportunities for extra credit. if your looking for an easy grade go elsewhere if you want to really learn and work at it to be prepared for 180 and beyond id take him deffenitely!
he has a passion for chem, which is a good quality as a chem professor. he knows how to teach and when you need help, all you have to do is ask, and he'll help you. In order to get an A, you need to do all the hw, go over his notes, and read the book. if you study, you'll succeed. he gives out A LOT of extra-credit.
Like the one below me said, he has passion in teaching which i wished all teachers had. Though his class is difficult it will prep you for 180 forsure. He curves grades and give extra-credit. Take him you science majors!!!
Dr. Appel is a wonderful Chem teacher. You won't appreciate him until you go on to have someone else. He will give you all the help you ask for- he just wants to see you try. He's very charming and makes lectures interesting. There's lots and lots of extra credit so it's up to you. If you have the chance it's a mistake not to take him.
His tests are difficult, but he is willing to review for and go over the test with you (after you take it of course). Great teacher, youthful and energetic. He has fun in-class "experiments" and there's lots of extra credit. You shouldn't get lower than a B.
Matt is an awesome teacher, despite the fact that I found his tests hard. If you are ever confused about any concept or problem in the course, go see him during office hours or go to his study periods he holds before a test. He is incredibly willing to help out all students if they do not understand the concept.
Dr. Appel is one of the best chemistry teacher at OCC. If you received a bad grade in his class it's because you did not do the work that is required of any class. He wants you to do the homework to help you not because he wants you to get a bad grade. Anyone who complains about him did not do the work and shouldn't be in any chem class.
Dr. Appel is very nice and helpful. His lectures pretty much cover everything you need to know for quizes and tests. I personally don't use the textbook AT ALL. Attendance is mandatory, show up, listen and write everything down. It's not a hard class, just a lot of information and memorizations. A lot of work but very helpful. RECOMMENDED!
ITS SO HARD...NOT RECOMMENDED!!
He is an AWESOME professor!! He is very helpful and you can always go to his office hours if you have questions. I would recommend him to anyone!
I took appel for chem 185 lab. He is probably one of the nicest guys I have ever met. He is so helpful and so kind I just want to hug him!
He really is a great teacher, and knows his stuff. Understand that in order to pass this class you must put forth time to study the material. His tests are very, very difficult. Class average has always been 60%, but he does curve. Also you will spend 1-3 hrs on the homework every week. Prelabs are a breeze. Excellent professor otherwise.
hard class, online homework, tests cover everything, too much information, but he tries to keep class interesting. hard tests but he's really helpful though.
He took one of Laux's lab sections and thought it. He is willing to help like no others. highly Recommanded. Great Teacher and his lab is amazing. ps. he makes ice cream on the last day;)
A very nice, patient and helpful teacher. If you have any question, go to his office hours, he is always willing to help.
If you retained anything from HS Chem, this class was super easy. Passed class didn't study that hard. The hw is all online, and it can be long but you have a week to do it. Easy class for the credit.
he is excellent professor. He is the best teacher i've ever met. he is always willing to help people.. if you don't pass this class, then means you just hate chemistry.. i love him
This guy is so full of himself. He should learn some meekness and try to by more professional. He twitches a lot while he lectures which is the only interesting thing about his class.
Amazing professor. Took his class Fall 08. I came into the class hating chemistry from HS & ended up kind of enjoying it. Online HW is time consuming but really helps. Occasional quizzes. Tests can get difficult but he puts up previous tests online that are similar to the real thing. GREAT professor. Take his class & you won't be disappointed.
class was easy if you understood how do it. material is easy (basically high school chem review). teacher is very nice and extremely helpful. you'll ace the tests (and the class) if you do the practice tests and understand them. homework and labs were easy points. book was worthless though, dont buy it.
He's as good as it's gonna get when it comes to chemistry. He's hilarious and he's so fricken clear about what he wants, it's almost cheating. I warn you though, his great teaching can't make up for some of the boring/hard things about Chem, so don't expect it to. It's never fun to memorize a ton of stuff, but you have to, even IF he's funny.
great teacher, makes learning the material as simple as possible, tests are fair, if you have had chem before this class is an easy A
He is an extremely awesome guy/teacher.. but he is extreeemely hard.. His tests are extremely tough but i definitely learned a lot from him even though i didnt do so great in the class. the online homework is a pain in the butt.. the quizzes are easy.. the LAB is pretty easy. i would take him but MAKE SUREE you read the book and review every week
You take 3 tests, and that's your grade. They are HARD and you better understand the material completely and have a natural affinity in Chemistry to get an A in his class. If you get a C on one test and wanted an A you might as well drop his class and try again
This is a difficult course, but Prof. Appel really makes the material interesting, even to those who don't like Chem. He's extremely personable and tries to help you if you ask questions and go to office hours. As with any class, study and you will do well! He's one of the best professors I've ever had.
ill admit some parts of his class were interesting, buh for the most part, no. most of his class depends on the exams, so if your not a good test taker like me, your almost sol. my highest test score was a D including the final, buh i pulled a C because of hw points and the lab. gl if you take his course.
Dr. Appel is AWESOME! Lectures are clear and well organized. He invests a lot of time to help out his students. Like for example, he sets up study sessions for the exam and his final. I love his zeal for chemistry. Ever since I left his class, I have been very disappointed b/c I just can't find another professor as great as he was. TAKE HIM <3
He's adorable & his obsession with Pepsi is really funny. He's really helpful & gives out a lot of extra credit opportunities. Even though the material is fairly easy, his tests are kind of hard. Study his past tests & do your homework!
Listen Korean student~! He is the BEST Chemistry teacher in the Orange Coast College! Easy Grader & Lots of Extra Credit!
Great Professor. As long as you do the homework, and study for the exams you should get atleast a B. I recommend going to the test review sessions and studing the previous exams. Dr Appel is funny, enthusiastic and a joy to have as a teacher.
Appel, pronounced (Uh Pell) not like the fruit :), is a great professor. His lectures are extremely entertaining. He even does some cool experiments during lecture. As long as you study you will do fine on his Exams. The class average on Exams are around 70. He's really helpful in lab as well. A+
it's chemsitry..it's not going to be easy...show up study and do the work and you'll be fine. super helpful and nice.
Prof. Appel is awesome. He makes chemistry so easy and entertaining. If you just go to his class and pay attention and take notes, you'll breeze through. Take every opportunity for xcredit/study sessions. 3exams/1final: they were pretty tough, but just study the previous exams he gives you. Hilarious, young, cool, and nerdy/cute, take HIM!
Fun class, not too hard. Loved it! Dr. Appel is very nice, helpful, and a great teacher. He's also really sexy, which makes it a little hard to concentrate sometimes. ;)
Super cool guy and REALLY cute nerd/surfer and funny. His tests are surprisingly difficult, but hes really helpful and makes things easy to understand. I loved chemistry after this class. "Radical" will be added to your vocab after this class.
Don't like this guy..Avoid at all costs. I had a 4.0 GPA before taking this class..I studied 7-10 hours before every test and still couldn't manage to get better than a C-. Tests are impossible.
Tests are Waaaaaaaaaaay too hard
He's an awesome teacher, but I have to admit that his tests are unbelievably hard. He's funny and a great teacher, but his tests really favor those who are naturally good at chem. I'm not great at it, and studied long hours for each test, but still couldn't earn better than a C. But he's a great guy!
He's soooooooooooooooooooo hott!! and funny! And a great professor!! But ya, his exams are too hard. I thought I was the only one who spent crazy amounts of time studying and being disappointed with my exam scores.. At least I'm not the only one..
I really enjoyed this class! Sure it's hard and there's a lot of memorization..but that's what chemistry is! He is really clear and helpful and I really like chemistry now because of him! I definitely recommend taking his class!!
Avoid like the plague..
If you care for your GPA, this is the class to avoid.
Don't take him unless you're prepared to see your GPA drop. I am(was) a 4.0 Honors student who has taken Chem before in High School (got an A) have a good solid background in Chem, and could not manage to receive better than a C in this class. Something's wrong with his curriculum, and it isn't me. Also my classmates struggled in this class. AVOID!
Complainers... Wait 'til you get to real college, you'll wish you had Appel again.
Poor teaching skills. Annoying. Treats you like your 5. Like the reviewers below say, this is the class to avoid taking.
Hated this class. Professor's jokes are awkward and lame. You just go to class and take notes for 1.5 hours with absolutely no interaction between student and professor. I dont know why he complains of not-high-enough scores on exams when you're just taking notes for the entire class period. All you do is write-no understanding. Hated this class..
Don't take this class unless ur prepared to suffer BIG TIME
Do NOT take! I had around a 3.5 GPA and I got a D in his class! AVOID at all cost! Trust me. I was one percent away from a C, and he didn't give it to me. AVOID AT ALL COST. WORST TEACHER EVER. Too much emphasis on tests and quizzes. Homework is barely worth anything. I never missed a single class or lab and I got a D in the class. avoid!!!
HORRIBLE!! He doesn't trust his students at all!! So suspicious that students will cheat! I wish I had done myself a hugeeee favor and took bazell. I worked my a** of in this class to end up with C, while they got A's trying somewhat (we both had the same GPA's before taking this class) His tests are impossible, DO NOT TAKE HIM!
I find his class amazing cause he's really cool and does lots of funny stuff in class. Getting an A in his class is easy as long as you're willing to study. Here are some tips:Come to class(3points EX),take notes and study them( no textbook needed but use it to reinforce ur knowledge), pay attention to the examples and practice em, dont miss EXs opp
I assure you that nobody other than himself wrote the below rating...look at the next pages if you don't believe me..everybody hates him-in lab, in class, just in general. he thinks hes above everyone and is soo full of it. he's the professor to avoid taking
I LOVED APPEL! i took him and thought he was an amazing teacher he offered study sessions before his tests and was alawys there during office hours and would basically reteach you everything if u didnt understand, if you think he is hard you have no idea what you have coming. You do have to study thought and i got an A,take him!
HATE HIM!! he tells you not to cheat and then tells you about when he was in college how he cheated and then he felt bad...he shouldn't be teaching..
Whoever got a bad grade in his Chem 130 class has GOT to be joking me. Chemistry isn't HARD, just a lot of memorization. I didn't try in his Chem 130 class and got a C, and passed! If i had tried to study a lot more like my friends I would have gotten an A. If you have self-discipline, take Appel. If not, you shouldn't be in college.
take him, guys
Appel is probably the best chem teacher at OCC. yes, his exams are hard and yes, sometimes we do spend 1.5 hours taking notes but if u just look thru them & go to class u should easily pass w/a C or better. even if u bomb all the exams. plus he's adorable, nerdy, surfer, and obsessed with pepsi. he's the teacher to take. did i mention hes cute?
Definitely puts an effort to make his classes interesting. He's adorable in a nerdy way. Very passionate about chemistry. The subject is pretty hard, just have to study for it. Overall, enjoyable class and teacher.
Whoever says the guy is hard musty be a moron. I'm sorry, but what? I took basic chemistry in high school 4 years ago, and that alone allowed me to doodle or daydream through lectures, barely study, and get a high A. Assuming you can do the most basic level of math and can memorize a little, class is a breeze. What's wrong with students these days?
The negative comments on here are clearly from people that didn't study and got a bad grade. Dr. Appel is an extremely nice dude, and is very helpful if you need the extra help. What people don't seem to realize in subjects like chemistry is, if you don't study, you won't do well, no matter how good the teacher is.
Avoid at all cost. Honestly, he is super hard. May seem like he's easy at first, but he's a b****. Suspects students of cheating ALL the time. Give me a break, Appell. Avoid this beezy.
If you don't get an A in this class you're stupid, lazy or both. Anyone saying you should avoid him is a crappy student or crappy person in general. Between the labs, online homework and extra credit you have plenty of opportunities to secure an A. If you attend all of the lectures you don't need to buy the text as the in-class notes are enough.
Dr. Appel's class was a bit challenging for me but that's mainly my fault for not going to his study sessions or office hours. He's extremely helpful when you talk to him and in lab, really takes the time to make sure to stop and make sure each person understands what he's teaching. Plus he's SUCH a cutie!
No reason why you shouldn't pass his class. He keeps the workload down and is always will to answer questions and help in any way he can. He's kinda nerdy and it shows in the excitement he brings to his lectures. I managed a B+ with pretty minimal effort.
Nothing special and nothing really bad to say. He's cool and likes to make jokes, but I'm not sure how well he explained the material. I think he is a perfectly average teacher. I got a B in the class and I din't study much
Overall not a bad teacher, but like most in the chem field he's a super stickler for details, units, etc... I guess that's what you get when there's nothing of substance to pay attention to otherwise! The amount of busy work assigned is annoying... be prepared to do webassign and worksheets for HOURS at a time... it's mind-numbingly monotonous
He is a good teacher. He loves chemistry and gets his students excited about the subject. He is always willing to help. He tries to work jokes into lecture. If you have problems with him for 130..... You better change your major cause chem isn't your thing.
Pretty good professor, always offers help to his students. Tests may be a little difficult, depending on the amount of studying you've put in. He makes cute, dorky chemistry jokes during lecture. The class requires that you pay to register for an online program to do your homework. If you don't arrive on time, you may get points deducted.
Took lecture with Appel and lab w/ Mucciaro. Appel teaches pretty slow so it's not too bad. Online hw for every chapter, get a few tries. 3 exams & a 2 day final, can be kinda hard. He shows you the last semester exams as a form of studying. Exam study sessions available. Random quizzes, not bad. Lots of extra credit. Got a w at gwc, but a B here!
awesome teacher. this class is pretty hard if you have never taken chemistry before. he's always willing to help you out during his office hours until you understand, even if it makes him late. overall he is a really cool teacher. Take lab and lecture with him
The Best!!!!!!
Amazing teacher. I hated chemistry before I took this class, and now I really enjoy it. He is very passionate about chemistry, and wants his students to do well; he is willing to help outside of lecture. The class honestly is not that hard you just have to do homework, attend lab, and study. He also offers extra credit. I strongly recommend him.
Extremely helpful. He is dedicated to teaching, is approachable, and interesting. I had no prior experience in chemistry so it was hard. Lots of opportunities for extra credit. Super nice guy. If you want to learn chemistry and exemplary lab technique, take Matt.
I love this professor. Really easy class, tests are straightforward and from the notes minimal reading and homework, grades are slightly curved. Easy A
When I first enrolled in a Chemistry course, I felt scared that it would be difficult. However, after the first few weeks, this class came really easy to me. The lectures and notes are clear, and the tests are curved. Overall, I would definitely recommend taking this Professor. He makes Chemistry, a difficult subject, into something easy.
I love Professor Appel! He's nice, easy going, understanding, and extremely helpful. If you do your homework, you will do very well on the tests. I would totally take this Professor again if I had the chance.
He's an awesome professor and a nice guy! He takes in all the students that are on the wait list, but don't let OCC know that, LOL! Make sure to print out and show that you are on his wait list to get into his class. Class was a breeze. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Lab work and homework cushioned the grades and the exams were fairly easy.
Professor Appel's class was easy. Lab and quizzes, along with the study guides, will prepare you for an "A" for his exams. He's the best person to take for chemistry at OCC. You fail as a college student if you can't get an "A" for his class. Got inside his class as the 30th person on wait list.
Appel is crazy hard! I am appalled at these ratings, it is quite obvious that he wrote these, they are only good ratings near the date, go back a lil and you will find the true rating. No curve, extensive tedious tests. No test review either! Never in office! I took AP chem in High school and got an A and I have a C- currently due to horrible prof
Had to drop appel prep class to chem. He gives surprise pop quizzes to mandate attendance. Those are hard and sometime he hasnt lectured the material wont curve tests, so people get around 40 or 50s on tests. His tests are intensely hard, I felt like i was talking Ochem already with this guy!Thinking of taking him again is giving me a stomach ulcer
he is so hard, if u were an A student then probably u would get a C- and I am an A student and I heard he is good and stuff and i went to his class and I almost didn't pass it, he gives to much quizes and tests , but u can pass it if u studied hard
he is the best ever , he accept all the watinglist :):)
he accept 20 from the watinglist, he gave everybody an A take him guys
easy easy easy easy easy
best ever
accept all the watinglist he is the best ever , i got an A , without studying , he is the best teacher ever guys ,
Most of the materials in this class is fairly easy if you remember stuff from high school. Or else it might take you time to study. He really cares for his students, and he's pretty cool to talk too. Plus he has preview session before each test. And he gives out a lot of EC, also curves test, too. AWESOME!
I took his lecture & lab in spring 13 & got A's. Attendance gave EC. Online HW & keys after finished. Quizzes, exams, & review sessions were informed at least 1 week early & given back later. Online keys for old exams. Lots of EC. Prelab was due before each lab. He's understanding, helpful, & loved Pepsi and element Argon :P Take him! ;) - Alyse
ok got a C because i never studied for the test till the daay of the test... don't be discourged by what these guys are saying about how they were in AP chem in high school... they mustve done nothing like me because i know couldve gotten an A if i tried so as any other class don't slack off and youll be fine..
Good professor. Take good notes and pay attention and you should be fine. You definitely have to study for an A but it is doable. He curves his tests as well as your final grade. His quizzes are NOT pop quizzes like some people have said on here. Shows you last years exams to help you prepare. Very fair grader and very easy on the eyes :)
You will get an A for the class FOR SURE if you take time to do the hw and practice test(Test is pretty much like the practice test&hw, nothing tricky). He always held study session before test, super helpful. Also he makes time to answer any question you have, super patient. Lots of extra credit. Attend class and take notes you'll be fine.
Difficult but take him if you actually want to learn. Had to drop the class because of personal reasons (I had a valid reason to ask for an incomplete but he REFUSED to help) but I learned more in his class Than I did when I retook it w someone else. He WILL meet you during office hrs if you ask and if you need help. Lots of work but worth it.
This guy is so freaking horrible. I was interested in Chemistry so much until I met him. One could know so much, but won't know how to teach. So confusing with his lecture. Takes days to reply emails. Had to study from the book by myself. Go ahead and take him, so open seats from other professor will be available for me !!! Thank you.
I love this guy! He keeps the lectures interesting and informative. He is fair and is always willing to help; make sure to study for the tests, they are difficult with out some preparation, even if believe to have a firm understanding of the material (I would know!)
he said our final grade will be posted last wednesday..a week after class ends, then thursday he says it will be posted this weekend.. still no grade. is this guy ever on time for anything? class.. late. labs... 15-20 minutes late
I had him as a sub for Vieau's lab class when she took medical leave. TAKE APPEL. He is WAY WAY more helpful than Vieau. He seems strict but he just wants you to do well. If you have questions, ask him, he will clear everything up for you.
This class was pretty good. The exams are difficult due to time. You must know your stuff going into the exam because you won't have time to figure things out. His lectures are entertaining. He tries very hard to appeal to his students ("Mr. Cool Guy"). That was the only part that bothered me. Study hard, make flash cards and you'll be fine.
I dropped this class along with a lot of other people in my lab. The only reason he has a good review on here is because he acts like nice guy and makes jokes in class. His explanations were really heard to understand, and I took ap chemistry in high school and got an A. He is very strict about his rules even in extreme circumstances no quiz makeup
Very good professor , he is clear helpful to all students. You have to put in work this is not an easy A class.
Hard work'll be rewarded. If that isn't the case, consider revising your method of studying--go to the Success Center or visit Appel during office hours for help. Use all resources provided on his websiteWebAssign to study. There are quizzes, 3 lec exams+1 cml. final, & 1 lab exam. A lil pain in the bum but overall v helpful. Bonus: hottie alert!
If you can take someone else please do it. He comes across as nice but he is too by the book.
I think Matt's lecture and lab were fair. Exams r straightforward because they are similar to practice problems. Make sure you master the basics (sig figs!!) because more likely than not he will catch small mistakes and in turn cost u big pts on tests.. He's a great professor, so ask questions about anything! He will prepare u for chem 180.
Matt is an amazing teacher. he is extremely clear when teaching and takes so much time to make sure you know the info. he is a pretty strict grader but not unfair he will give partial credit. gives some ec and hw which is helpful. chem isn't an easy subject but he will gladly help you if you need extra help. I would take him again.
I have taken Dr. Appel for two semesters in a row, and I am pleased I have done so. Initially Chemistry was not my strongest subject and was dreading it before hand. Since then, I've grown an appreciation in chemistry I previously wouldn't expect to have. I credit that to Dr. Appel.
He is a tough grader, people give him a good review just because he's kind of funny. Wouldn't take him again
He posts outlines so you can take notes on it & worksheets & practice exams. I honestly had to put in the work, but it was my 1st time learning chemistry. When studying I suggest redoing the worksheets, redoing the homework & practicing exams & also writing down things you need to memorize. takes a little while to grade exams.
His class was really interesting and he gets really engaged with most of his lectures, he'll try to explain as best as he can but he also goes through his lectures pretty fast. I would recommend to print out an outline of notes to keep up with and to rewrite them again. Test are to be expected, take a look for the worksheets they do help
I had to spend so much time outside of class trying to understand what it was that he was teaching. It was unfortunate we got our class cancelled twice, but Dr. Appel tried to make up for it by rushing through lessons as fast as he could (with messy writing) with no time for us to process the material before he moved on.
This class was really difficult. He doesn't explain much and rushes through the lessons. The only way to pass this class is if you study everyday and aren't taking any other classes. I took my lab class with a different prof and he explained the lesson way better. I was doing really well in school until I took this class.
Failed the class with a D, however, Appel is a good teacher. You genuinely have to try in his class, which I didn't do. I deserved the grade I got and I am not mad at Appel at all. Labs are easy. Tests are basically your grade, study well for the tests. Also I didn't touch the textbook the entire semester, so maybe that was something.
Prof. Appel was an amazing teacher. I had him for 3 semester and I could tell you he truly cares about his students. The lectures were good and the labs were pretty straight forward. Although the tests were a bit challenging at times, he didn't mind to sit with you and go over the materials till you felt comfortable with them.
He's nice but the thing is we not know exactly what he wants in the test. he is really tough grader. he would not answer any questions about the final exam after you knew the grade. you thought you did well on test but actually he would be able to find out your mistakes and take a lot of grade from it. would not recommend.
He is a good teacher, but his writing is awful. If you seat in the middle of his class, you won't recognize what he wrote on the board. That is the reason I fail the class. Test are heavy. the second test, he only gave you 30 mins to finish, not a whole class hours, which I knew the materials, but don't have enough time to finish it.
If you're looking for a professor that gives you a good feedback, this is not the one. He is not a man of word, posting assignments in last minute and blaming the student for not completing them.
Dr. Appel is an amazing professor who really wants you to learn something from his class. Chemistry is hard and a lot of people in my class struggled but Dr. Appel was great at answering questions and helping. He gives practice tests and worksheets that are similar to the exam. I worked hard for it and received an A. Would definitely recommend.
Appel is a really sweet guy,but his handwriting is a headache. Make sure you ask for a seat in the front if you do take his class. His lectures are pretty easy to follow. Definitely need to put in lots of effort and work if you want an A. I honestly tried really hard for an A, did my best but ended up with a B. Labs are easy.
Do NOT recommend him at all. Lecture is ok, but if you're in his Lab, it's the worst! Lots of vague explanations and really tough grader for small things. Doesn't want anyone to talk to each other or have phones cuz he thinks its cheating. Once his nice guy act wears off, he becomes really annoying! Find another class or drop before it's too late!!
Dr. Appel is one of remarkable professors. He is truly care about his students. He will spend extra time outside the lecture and lab to go over the old exams with the students. His lecture is easy to understand, but Chemistry is a difficult subject, you have to put the work in to get an A.
4-5 tests w/ lots of info to memorize in a short amount of time. However, he is very nice and patient if you need extra help outside of class. His lectures are clear, I just don't like his note taking style. Be prepared to study A LOT more than what he asks you to do. Hw was online, textbook was only used if you wanna read it to further study
Take his class, u won't regret. He gives a lot of chances, which I like the best. Definitely gonna take his class again.
Ive had 130,180 and 185 with him for three semesters, and he's one of the best in occ. His lectures are not boring, he will answer your questions at any time in the best way. His classes and tests are not stressful.
He is awesome
A good teacher, but has terrible handwriting (writes like a chicken). Do the practice tests and worksheets because without them your gonna struggle. Teacher is rlly nice, but really annoying about cheating, and phones don't know what turned him into such a hard ass about that gets annoying honestly. Overall take him, best of luck
chem 130 was much harder than i expected. as an introductory class they really pile on the knowledge and require lots of memorizing than i was ready for. chem 130 almost needs its own prep class.
horrible
If you enjoy blindlessly trying to copy horribly written notes off a screen while he rambles & speeds through notes this is the guy for you. This is by far the worst prof I have ever had in all of my years at OCC- & I mean that by saying the absolute worst teacher. He cannot teach, I HIGHLY do not recommend. You will regret it & you will prob drop
Rushes through lectures at a ridiculous rate with absolutely terrible handwriting. Not to
He really honestly does have terrible hand writing, its really important you take good notes for this class. Not a mean professor, but definitely not super nice. Definitely overhyped professor, shocked to see good reviews for this guy.
He is a nice professor. However, his lecture and lab is really heavy. If you plan on take him be ready with lecture and example from the note. It will be totally different from the test.
hopefully OCC will find a better professor than prof Appel.
Matt is a really kind person and his love for chemistry is refreshing. As long as you can memorize some compounds and elements, he'll clearly explain everything else you learn. He's really understanding and patient, so his office hours are very useful. He gives out his old exams to help you learn his test style and study for the upcoming exams.
Probably one of the worst teachers I've ever had. Stay away everybody.
Hes a good proff. His exams are pretty easy if you learn and do the homeworks. There are hw every week (about 2 due dates a week). Beside the mandatory hw, he posts some extra hw that you can optionally practice. If you work hard on hw, you will get an A. I belive that.
Hes a nice professor and is willing to help you. Then comes COVID 19. His office hours were cut down to once every other week. His online tests were impossible to finish on time. Who gives a Chem test that you cant backtrack? You cant even time yourself on an exam. Dont take him if its online. Otherwise, take him hes nice.
I took this professor for chem 180, and it was ridiculous. His quizzes and tests will not give you enough time to finish. His class had prerecorded lectures which were long ( 2-4 hours dep on ch) and went off track the majority of the time. His labs were EZ, but his final was ridiculous. Only gave 20 mins to submit your work. Ch Quiz every week.
Took this class online due to COVID19. Lots of pointless homework assignments including iClicker (lose credit if wrong) and annotated lecture notes (aka copying what he writes on lecture videos, NOT during scheduled lectures). If you skip questions during quiz/tests, you can't go back. Helpful-ish answering questions, but overall would stay away.
Points off if you answer iclicker questions wrong, points off if you don't take his notes word for word, points off if you get hw Qs wrong. It seems to me that this class is more about following his rules and being worried about losing points than about genuinely learning and enjoying chem. Also 7hr YT lectures/week plus 3+ zoom lectures?
This teacher is a worthless one. The time he gives is the reason why this course is not possible to succeed on. To be honest, what he teaches is easy, but what is hard/impossible is the time itself that he gives upon his exams. When you hear Appel, run away. He simply doesnt know how to teach. I hope he gets nailed by a student because he sucks..
He goes off topic a lot during his lectures and video notes. Video notes range from 4-7 hours long. Homework is done through Pearson's mastering with each chapter taking hours to finish and often does not fully prepare you for the quiz. For a fast paced class, Appel does a terrible job at condensing the material on each chapter. I don't recommend.
This is the worst professor I've ever had. Before we went back in person, he graded and posted those grades, but after we went in person, he did not post grades for 5 to 6 weeks. He posted the exam score, but that was the only grade he posted after in person. About 5-6 weeks later, he posted two graded quizzes, even though we took more. Had to drop
Took Dr. Appel's class online fall '21. I STRUGGLE with chem, but I went to a lot of his office hours (virtual), and he's so patient and nice while explaining things, so that really helped me. He's very approachable, I was never afraid to ask a 'dumb' question. I appreciated all the videos he made and his Zoom lectures. Overall great professor!
I took Appel in person and he gave us so many chances to exceed. The quizzes are easy if you take time to study 30m-1hr outside. If you need help, go to office hours, he does his best to help. He genuinely wants to see you succeed and if you put the work in, A's are not impossible. You get worksheets and tests are lecture stuff. Best chem teacher
He's legit an awesome professor fr. He's very patient and understanding with his students and I'm never afraid to approach him when asking questions or talking about anything else. He gives you many chances, opportunities, and a lot of extra credit because he just wants to see his students succeed. Also very friendly and chill; lectures are slow.
Best Professor ever! He gives a lot of extra credit. Try to go to his Office Hour as much as you can, it's amazing and very very very helpful for your knowledge. He's very caring about his students. To pass the exam, do worksheets that he gave. He gives us quizs mostly for every chapter to review and they're very helpful for the exams and final.
Matt is extremely friendly in every environment you'll see him in for the course: lab, lecture, office hours. Lectures are completely based off of his provided fill-in-the-blank style notes, so reference the textbook sparingly. All lectures feel excessively long and repetitive, leaving the content rather muddled and very difficult to preview.
Appel genuinely cares about his student's success. Best chemistry teacher in the department. A couple of extra credit opportunities, but didn't need it because his exams were fair. Pay attention in lecture, and memorize things progressively. Exams were half MC, and half FRQ. In lab he was very helpful. Great professor, would take again.
Great professor. Passionate about chemistry and teaching, and really clear on grades. If you do the homework and pay attention to lecture, you'll be good.
Great professor and passionate both about the subject material and about teaching. Getting an A in the class will require showing up to class/labs + actively participating/taking notes (8 hours a week), pre-lab once a week (1 hour), reading chapters/doing the chapter hw (5 hours each for about 10 chapters), studying for the 5 exams (5 hours each).
so nice I loved having him! always understanding and helpful and patient
Took lecture Chemistry with him, he is very understanding as he rescheduled the test when it happens to be in vacation (for me it was Halloween). Exam should not be a problem if we do the worksheet and homework (even though we have to buy text book online to do homework on website, which I think worth it for this class).
He will not help you pass and say so but he will always tell you to reread his notes and go to tutoring and he always explains as if you should already know the info his tests are hard and if you tried talk to him he will always give you office hours and never show upon time or show up at all and he forgets add grades and he will leave you hanging
He really doesn't teach that well and he admitted it to everybody during lecture this semester. Me and other students don't understand why he nitpicks points away from everybody's exam. Based on our study group he took points off our exams in lecture/lab for sig figs, but didn't take points for his favored students. Its not fair. Don't take him!!!!
Put in effort and you will get a good grade, there is some memorizing that I didn't like but ig its a chem class so shouldn't expect less. funny and down to earth
This is my second time taking this course but Mr.Appel is a very good professor. He is genuinely caring if you put in the effort and is willing to help if you ask. The exams are easy if you study what he teaches and really do the homework. Loads of extra credit opportunities and an overall laid back class. Would 100% recommend
Awesome prof. He's always ready to answer your questions and is accessible outside class. CHEM130 is very laid back. Do the homework and you'll do great on the exams.
Professor Appel is engaging and helpful if you put in the effort. Exams are manageable with regular study using the textbook and unstuckstudy. Overall a laid-back class with good opportunities for extra credit.
I enjoyed his class because of his teaching style. I liked the premade outlines of the notes. Lab is really easy if you just follow all the directions. There was a lot more math than expected but nothing too difficult. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and the extra credit bumped my grade to an A. I would recommend!
The test will be easy if you understand clearly and listen attentively to the lecture.
My favorite teacher so far! The class is very hard, but professor is great and is always there to help. Quizzes are very easy, but exams are hard. Lab is very fun! Extra credit is offered throughout the semester
Great prof. He throws in some jokes in his lecture which makes it a bit more tolerable. I didn't have him for lab so idk if he's a harsh grader, but overall he fun professor who also takes the class srsly.
Good. Quizzes mostly taken in lab and MOSTLY can have "cheat" sheet. Exams no cheat sheet except for final. Lots of EC sprinkled thru out. 2 HW parts, first part is not hard, second part is EC. If struggling, take the tutoring class or be with his defined office hrs. In terms of character, he is nicer than some faculty members and tries to be funny
you can tell he genuinely has a passion for the subject and wants his students to succeed. A LOT of extra credit given, a lot of partial credit and leniency in grading. quizzes + final get a info sheet. he gives his tests from the previous year to help study. one downside is he takes forever to upload grades, but is very helpful in lab.
He is a super sweet and nice guy (gives girl dad energy but isn't). If you start memorizing the spelling of the elements on the periodic table and basic cations and anions before class starts the pressure will feel a lot less. There is a lot of material & a lot of memorization. There are 3 exams plus a final, & a lot of extra credit opportunities.
There is a lot of required memorization! He offers several extra credit opportunities throughout the semester. He tries to keep the lecture interesting even if the content is dry. All important deadlines and dates are provided beforehand. You have to put in work to do well in this course.
Unlike most people, I had a good mindset going into this class. He is a nice and caring guy, but his method of teaching is awful. His canvas isn't organized, so there is no clear structure to learning. Chemistry is hard, yes, but you have to put in WAY more effort to learn this material simply because he does not have time to refine his teaching.
He is a very kind and caring teacher.. but his teaching method is ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!!! The way he sets up his cirriculum makes this already hard subject even more difficult. You have to jump through a bunch of hurdles to even understand your own notes or make sense of his canvas.
Always left lecture discouraged & frustrated by his teaching style. Skills class was not helpful, wants students to talk to each other to figure out the practice sheets..we are there because we don't understand the material. Very picky, measurements have to be done his way or they are wrong even if you get the same #.Respectfully, don't recommend
Had a bad experience with him, he's nice and all but his way of teaching is not the best. Unreadable handwriting and he goes through the notes fast during lecture at his own paste. However he does provide extra credit, but it doesn't help your grade that much. His skills class is useless. Basically you have to learn on your own.
Class was not easy, but what can I expect from any chem class. He is very kind and understanding. His teaching style is very engaging to me. Only downside is his hand writing is very messy.
I think you guys should take his class. I got Dr. Appel's Chem130 class in this Fall semester 2025, and I would say that he is a fantastic professor.
