Asplund's cool. He's funny and blows things up every Friday, candidly admitting it has no connection to the material. He's more of a chemistry expert, so he can't explain all areas of science with equal clarity, but if you do the readings and ask questions of TAs, you'll be okay. Not a hard class if you do the work.

I suggest taking Physical Science from Asplund. He's a good teacher, and blows stuff up most days (very fun). I hated the tests (getting between 60-80%), but he's not the one who makes them (it's some other professor), so you might as well take those stupid tests and have a GOOD teacher, rather than having to take them anyway and having a bad one.

For higher level chem classes it seems he is a good choice. For chem 105, I would go a different route. Dr. Asplund is a genuinely good guy, but he has been in the field of chemistry so long that he forgot what it is like to struggle over new concepts or even sig figs. He's too smart and fast for the average joe taking beginner chemistry

Dr. Asplund did not care if anybody learned. The average on all the tests was 60%. He showed up, presented his lecture, and left. No questions asked, no participation occurred. He would just stand there and derive endless equations without giving the big picture, and without doing any examples. In addition, the class was extremely disorganized.

Dr. Asplund is incredibly nice and very helpful outside of class. His lectures get a little too deep sometimes, mainly because he is very passionate about what he teaches. He also takes a long time to grade things so be aware of that. One of the most friendly professors here.

Without a doubt the worst professor I've ever had. He tests way above what is taught in class and through the homework. When his TA's wouldn't show up for their labs and I emailed him about it, (he's the head of the chem 105 course) he jumped to their defense rather than holding them accountable. Absolutely pathetic professor.

Chemistry should be difficult, but not THIS difficult. He speeds through content and makes the exams 10x harder than anything you learned in class. TA's are amazing, but there's only so much they can teach you in recitations. I ended up withdrawing from his class and will be taking it with another professor.

If you can find a better chem professor at byu, take them instead of Asplund. He is very test heavy and the tests are so much harder than the homework and problem sets he gives out. He actively tries to trick you in the exams. Attendance isn't mandatory but he has quiz questions every class that is worth points so if you miss it does add up.

Professor Asplund seemed to want to be helpful, but the tests were often different from what he taught in class. His lectures were hard and confusing to follow, he would frequently go off on tangents that didn't matter. The class average on his tests were frequently below passing and he wouldn't curve tests. Definitely take chem from somebody else.

This is a 1 credit class that he doesn't seem too invested in. It's disorganized and learning suite deadlines often aren't correct. He's pretty lenient about stuff like that though, so the class wasn't too hard. He was really nice and wanted to help if anyone expressed confusion.

Chem 105 is work heavy no matter who you take it from. Asplund is one of the best choices. I learned in lecture just fine. You don't need to do readings, but you have 2 homework assignments per lecture. They took me probably 45 min- 1 hr each. Tests follow these problems really closely though. Practice problems and use the TAs and you'll do fine.

This class was difficult, but the big thing here is you need to study the concepts he puts on the study guide rather than just doing the practice exam or looking through the homework. If I had done this on the first few exams I would've gotten an A. Study hard for the tests and use all the resources he gives you and you'll do great.

Incredibly homework heavy, especially since he does not really teach anything. Tests were created to fool students, including unknown concepts, and multiple reminders that "I'm going to try to trick you on this". Zero concern for students. Lectures were useless, and he would rather play the cello than spend time explaining things in a rational way.

He is the best lecturer on earth. People like to critique his lectures because he doesn't spent 50 minutes explaining how to solve problems, but that's not what he is there for. He explains concepts in a straightforward and intriguing way. He managed to make one of the most painful classes at BYU enjoyable. P.S. every single concept is important!!!

I worked as a TA for this professor and two others (Hansen and Woodfield). Asplund is the middle ground. His lectures follow the topics but frequently get off topic. Cares about the students, but doesn't take the time to teach the concepts in a helpful way. If you take from him, find a good TA, they're your best resource.

Very mid. The course was challenging, and He would speed through all of his material to make sure we were caught up. Wouldn't give very detailed explanations on how to use the equations and other tools that he gave us. Focused heavily on the conceptual side of chemistry, but wouldn't answer a lot of questions during class. TAs make it or break it.

Dr. Asplund is great: he was so available and welcoming in and out of office hours, making this class a lot more manageable. I changed my personal scripture study habits based on how he taught us to study for chemistry. Strong gospel emphasis! Lots of homework, but prepares you for exactly what will be on the tests. He repeatedly tells you that the practice problems will teach you better than he can. Exploratory lab assignment once a week, takes about an hour.

This is a one-credit lab; however, the amount of work outside and inside of class is more like three credits, forewarning. As well as being test-heavy, little to no study materials were given for the exams, and the professor is often unresponsive to emails. TAs grade assignments and grade very shallowly, and it is very hard to work with them.
