Great teacher but hard tests

Great professor! He actually explains the material, what a concept!
He's the chemistry man.
the demos are really fun.
Great demos. Really tries to make the class fun! Tests are a bit of a time crunch but they are curved.
Great professor thought the material clearly and entertainingly, but his final was a killer. I still recommend him highly over Donnaley.
Good explanations and demonstrations. If you can't hack it it's your fault not his.
Great and enthusiastic lecturer and fair tests.
Hard class...talks so fast too. Demos were cool but he does less and less. Then it's just straight out speed-talking. Learned lots though.

Dr. Augustine is awesome, definitely the best chem teacher I've ever had. The only reason the easiness factor is low is because a lot of people have trouble grasping thermochem, it's always been that way, and chances are it always will be.
Augustine is a great teacher and he really tries to help students as much as possible. His practice tests are even indicative of the real exam which is very useful, unlike Mack who's tests are ridiculous and not related to practice tests whatsoever.

Entertaining, Straightforward, fair...what more could you want?
GREAT chem teacher, makes chemistry easier and more interesting, makes effort to make lecutres worth the time, grades fairly, tries hard to help out the students by making the test A LOT easier, overall good teacher
Definitely a great lecturer, clear Powerpoints, entertaining demos, beer examples, straightforward midterms. I have yet to take his final though...
Funny guy-- he made the class a lot of fun. Coolest teacher I have had yet.

Lectures are too fast. Tests are really hard- don't rely on the practice midterms.
good lecturer. enthusiastic. you wont fall asleep no matter how hard u try. good guy, good office hours to help, tests difficult however.
Great lecturer. Hard tests. Do not rely on long answer examples from practice tests.
He was a very good lecturer, never fell asleep in class. Tests are extremely hard...

fantastic lecturer, great guy, very nice, extremely helpful. tests are difficult, but fair. will do everything he can to help you out if you ask.
Excellent chemistry professor. He really is a good lecturer. I learned everything in this class by going to class. Study his notes, listen to him, do the practice exams and you'll get a good grade. His tests are NOT hard. They are very fair.
very good lecturer. extremely helpful and clear. tests are hard, yet fair.
Pretty good prof. Lectures were understandable and not too fast but not to slow either. Didn't fall asleep ever. Def attend first day of lecture and the last or second to last cus he does in class experiments...def a good prof...tests were a bit hard.
A nice, fun, and approachable teacher. He did more demonstrations this quarter than all the science teachers in my life combined! The demos and his interesting sense of humor can liven up lectures (especially funny if he's on a caffeine high). His test
Really fun, does a lot of loud demos, gives two practice midterms/finals and goes over them entirely and prepares you well for the tests.
GREAT lecturer with a sense of humor, but can be quite rude and unwilling to help students outside of class.
Good, humerous teacher who teaches che well. Straight forward lectures and many awesome demostrations.
Best professor ever. Clear, concise, and organized lectures with copious demonstrations, fair tests, and unbridled enthusiasm when it comes to the course material. Highly recommended.
Best teacher I've ever had. Somehow he makes chemistry fun.
This guy is the best, for midterms he gave out practice exams with answers, then the night before had a huge hall meeting and went over everything, I mean everything. He's funny too.
BEST CHEM TEACHER EVER
Spectacular professor, this man should be cloned. He's hot too, in that slightly overweight middle-aged man kind of way.
i love his clips of himself on TV its highlarious and his lectures are very clear and easy to follow
he makes chem really fun and easy. DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS.
he is fair and somewhat challenging, but if you follow his lectures and notes it should be okay. just remember to study! and the MC counts for a lot.
This guy is a straight up G. He is tight. Best teacher by far. Makes Chem fun in a really weird way.
This professor is awesome. I hated Chemistry coming into his class, but now it's grown on me. He makes lectures fun, with jokes and interesting demos. His TV clips are pretty funny too. Is a cool prof, his review sessions before tests really help.
Awsome teacher. He is very animated and keeps lectures interesting. His friday videos of himself are great!
his lectures are entertaining but his tests are hard
He seems like a very laid back person and jokes around with the students during lecture which makes him much more interesting to listen to. He makes learning chemistry a bit more fun.
Augustine is a very entertaining teacher and willing to answer questions. Sometimes he gets sarcastic and irritable, but then again his mostly-freshman classes does get annoying. Harder than most freshman chem teachers.
Dr. A is very enthusiastic about his work and managed to make chem 2b interesting. He is very animated and also gives great demos in class.
Entertaining teacher. Gives hints as to what is on tests. Tests are pretty hard. Make sure you read the book! His online notes can be vague.
If 2B was just lecture it would be an awesome class. He's helpful and funny, and seems more like a stand up comedian than a chem professor. He tries to make the material fun, but even he admits a lot of it is really really dull.
For the first time ever, I looked forward to going to chem lectures.Just don't be fooled by his laid-back appearance-his exams are still very hard.Reading the book was helpful, but most problems in the book were not very similar to problems on tests.
He is a really good teacher who makes chemistry fun. I enjoyed going to lectures and the review sessions are really helpful. His tests were pretty easy and I wish he was teaching 2C.
he's a good professor..makes chem lots of fun tests can be tricky sometimes...the average of the 2nd midterm was 47
Really nice guy who actually cares how the students are doing. He does all lectures on powerpoint and even though this B is supposed to be the hardest in the chem 2 series, he made it clear and seem really simple. AND you get to watch things blow up a lot
He is AWESOME. I really enjoyed having him as a teacher and he made chemisty much easier to understand. He is really funny and likes to show a lot of demos, especially blowing things up. He also showed videos in class very Friday which was awesome.
The best chem teacher I have ever had, makes the chem class interesting, sometimes gives cool demos and shows his videos in class.
He is one of the hardest che 2 professors. Just study a lot. Read the book, do the practice exams!(he actually used a practice exam for the midterm when I took him! Guess who got a 100?) He's kind of mean during office hrs but then again, fre. are anno
He is hot and sexy!
now i reallly hate chem but augustine made it much easier than i wouldve thought. biggest tip: go to review sessions and do practice tests!!! guaranteed A
the notes are online, but in class he goes really fast. tests are hard. other than that he's cool and laidback.
Now I really hate(d) chem, but Augustine is the best!! He keeps you interested even early in the morning with his humor and his awesome demos. He makes the material easy to understand. Very funny and helpful guy, really tries to help you learn the stuff! He also does review sessions for exams too!
His tests are the hardest chem tests I've ever taken. I took tests for other profs on 2B, and they were hella easy
He's a really interesting prof. And his review sessions are the best, he basically gives you what's going to be on the test. He's just a neat guy in general. His tests are straight forward.
makes chem fun and exciting. Lots of explosive demos. Very approchable for help he even shows up for chem labs to check how we r doing.
he is a GREAT professor. he always has demos that kept you interested. the tests were really hard, but he has really good review sessions and practice tests. if you get him, consider yourself lucky!
He is a very good chemistry professors. Midterms were long and hard, but worth to take his classes because you will learn a lot from him. Attend his review sessions and do the practice exam.
Hated chemistry but this guy makes it ok. And even though I still couldn't stop myself from falling asleep after a time of no demos, it was still a great class. He's very clear, does lots of examples, has good (and large) handwriting, and very helpful. Awesome demos. And very funny guy as well.
Augustine is the best 2b prof. out there. He knows his stuff and his lectures are never boring. You can tell he's interested in what he's teaching. His tests aren't easy but he tells you what you need to know for tests during the review sessions. Really helpful and wants his students to do well.
I really liked having him for a teacher. He's funny and very educated. He makes chemistry somewhat fun. He's very helpful when it comes to midterms and finals. Do the practice midterms..they help alot.
Augustine makes chem awesome. He gives a fast lecture at times, but that's because he also gives cool demos! He's a really laid-back guy and knows the subject matter well. Easy to talk to, he even visits the labs sometimes to see how every1's doin. If you gotta take chem, get this prof.
Augustine is a very good professor. He is very helpful, makes sure you understand the important things. Very entertaining. You will not regret taking his class! The curves/gradings are fair. Attend his reviews and you'll do fine on his tests.
Could not have asked for a better chem teacher. He really knows how to teach a subject. He repeats important points and teaches information the way you would process it mentally. If you attend his lecture and run through the chapters-there's no way you won't learn. One of the best i've had yet.
Good teacher and lecturer and makes thing clear. His 1st demo is great but the rest sorta suck. His tests are fair and he gives a good curve.Do the practice tests(something I didn't do) and you won't regret it.The only bad thing is that the grades don't get updated.Be prepared to wait a lifetime.
go to the lecture and review session = A. I didn't do any of the hws and reading, but still ends up with an A. just pay attention in the class and study his notes. He is the best chem teacher ever.
He is a good lecturer. A kool prof. but his test are harder than Dr. Enderle. I bet his test is the hardest out of all the CHE2 teachers. He did not care about me when I went to ask a question the first week, he just said "I don't know". I would prefer a boring lecturer but easy tests.
one of da best profs i've had @ UCD!!! I would say Dr. Augustine is a fairly easy teacher..as long as you do all da book probs, practice midterms, and go to his lectures..you'll ace da class!! I got a B for doing his practice midterms n going to his lectures! Don't worry, he wont make u you bored!
He is a good teacher with fun demos(at least the first and last one). But I thought his exams were hard even though I did the practice tests. He goes through material really fast, so keep up with the readings and you should do fine.
Good teacher, very helpful. Definitely harder professor thatn the others, but he does such a good job lecturing that it's OK. Definitely go to lecture and do the problems. I hated chem2a, but he made chem as fun as it could possibly be... although it's still not that much fun.
He is a good professor and a funny person. i never went to office hours. Just do the practice exams and definitely GO TO THE REVIEW SESSION! do this and you'll get an A. Demos are good especially the last lecture which was all demos. Definitely go to that one.
He is a lousy teacher. Tests are very hard but is a bit better at explaining things. Curves are killer.
I thought he would be cool because hes a surfer guy and is real laid back during lecture- has cool demos.. but his test are REALLY HARD... beware! He's definately an ass when it comes to making tests.
he wasted one of our lectures on a stupid presentation from another professor advertising about his own course. it was right before the finals too. his tests r too long and hard.
augustine is a great guy, but his tests are killer. on the 2nd midterm, the average was a 42. he's very laid-back and loves blowing things up, explains concepts clearly and is generally a good prof, except for the test thing. basically, the exams are really really long and full of tricky questions on topics barely covered in lecture.
H2+O2+heat=BOOM
augustine is an awesome teacher. hes really clear and gives tons of examples to help you out. he pretty hilarious and not at all boring during class. his second midterm is horrible though,he fails everyone on purpose. but theres a curve so no worries. hes a good teacher overall
Hella cool! He brought beer to class and blows stuff up. Gives lots of practice problems during lecture and is very clear and helpful. He did a show for the discovery channel as like a ponytail leather wearing biker equivelent Bill Nye. He looks like a snowborder/ biker but is really smart and an excellent teacher.
Augustine is a cool professor but it realitivly tough. Second midterm is impossible and he tends to go really fast in class through his slides. If you take him printing out the notes would be helpful to really pay attention to his lecture. Prob one of the chillest instructers on the campus though.
he still hasnt' post up the grades yet. No clue on how he curves, either by discussion or whole class. anyhow, he's just a good lecturer, but not a test maker.
It was really nice to be in his class. I won't forget the first and the last day of class when he blew up stuff. I liked his lectures so much, but you should note that his exams are really tough that on one midterm, average was 40 something. BUT you'll like him a lot. =)
Great lecturer, although his tests are tricky. You will still learn a lot, even if you do bad in the class. He also doesnt use the gradebook feature on the course website so its hard to track your grade. Overall recommended teacher.
difficult tests, however, he gives helpful hints as to what will and will not be on them. overall a good lecturer and awesome hair
Excellent professor. Stimulated my interest in p-chem lab and analysis. Improved writing/speaking skills through in depth lab reports and "talks" in front of the class.
AWESOME easiest chem class ever if you think his tests are hard you are not listening to him tell you exactly what is on the tests word for word. Great guy loves to burn things
took this class winter 03, excellent preparation for tests, enthusiastic, best chem teacher here!
He's really cool and wants everyone to do as well as possible so he tries to make his exams as easy as possible and very similar to the practice tests. The review sessions are really good before tests.
As an upper division chemistry major, I have experienced a wide variety of teachers of differing ability. While Matt may seem "cool", he is worthless as an instructor if you are interested in learning. This may be due to his inexperience teaching physical chemistry, or it may just be his lack of thought in preparing lectures.
Great teacher. Very forward with the information and tells you what will be on the exams.
He is a really nice and funny guy, but don't let that fool you, the class is still hard! He is always late for class and doesn't seem to take everything seriously, which tends to make you take it not so seriously as well. Study hard, and don't make the mistake of thinking he is going to make it easy!
very nice professor, possibly the best for chem 2b
Very chill and kind of funny, but this class is hard! Then again, chemistry is not my forte.
Augustine was an excellent professor. The Final and midterm's he gave us were easy by his standards, but seemed hard to everyone else. I studied and read the book so I didn't have any issues. As long as you study and practice you should do fine. He has a great sense of humor and made me laugh numerous times. Def one of my favorite professors.
He doesn't care about the individual student, and he isn't always fair when it comes to grading.

After our average was low on our first midterm he told us we were all lazy and didn't study so he wasn't going ot help us. I went in to his office hours, and emailed him and he told me I got an A- on the midterm, stop complaining, and he refused to help telling me the rest of the class was lazy.
Just read the book. Know the material. No shortcuts. 10%lab, midterms a killer, final made me want to punch a baby. Hes TOUGH. Not patient or helpful. If he doesn't like your class because of laziness- good luck..
Lectures are very boring. Homework does not correlate to the stuff he teaches in class, needless to say it becomes very confusing. Repeats some parts of the lecture over and over again and skips through many others pretty quickly. I would not recommend this professor.
I don't know why anyone is saying anything bad about Prof. Augustine. I think he is a great professor and assigns homework that is extremely useful when it comes to class exams.
Yes, this is a difficult class, but I think its just difficult material. He uses a lot of examples and many of the questions on the exams are exactly like the homwork or lecture examples. Hard, but a decent professor.
Well, all the Chem 2 series classes were absolutely terrible. However, Matt Augustine at least made it somewhat interesting and really isn't that hard as long as you attend class. Good luck getting through all the Chems.
I personally think that he's an awesome professor. Yea its hard but I mean chem is suppose to be hard but he makes lectures fun and he gives out alot of clues on whats going to be on the exam during review session. Homework is also very helpful because alot of it is like whats going to be on the exam. I perfer him over Toupadakis
Augustine is constantly late to lectures and reviews, sends his TA instead (so he can go surfing!), and is generally an obnoxious and arrogant man. He certainly knows his stuff, and tries (somewhat successfully) to be "cool"; thus his arrogance goes right over the heads of most of his students. Take Enderle or even Toupadakis over this clown!
Augustine is a pretty cool prof. He talks fast in lecture but always reviews what he said the next day and his notes are online. Makes you do homework so you don't fall behind which is good. Helpful when telling you what's on the test. Tries to be interesting and usually is. Demos are fun when he gets around to doing one. Better than Toupadakis.
what a sick professor! he basically tells you everything that's gonna be on the exams. and on top of that he assigns homework that mirrors his exams too. labs are a bit tough, and boring nonetheless. the final he basically told us 3 of the answers and how to do them. just go to review sessions. Take AUGUSTINE!!!!! enderle and toup make hard tests
Good professor, goes over countless examples. Has assigned homework that is very helpful. The class is challenging, but his tests are fair: if you work hard, it'll pay off, and he will give you an easier test if he likes your class.
he's obnoxious but he knows the material well. his tests are hard and i think his curves did not help much. the required homework was helpful in making you actually do them. i prefer toupadakis over him. he isn't very punctual either. sure he speaks crystal clear english but half the time it feels like he's rambling on..and on..
His lecture notes/slides are pretty much useless; too simple. so you have to read the book. but the examples he taught in class were good because the long-answer questions were pretty much like the examples. i guess he made his exams really easy just for our class so the curve wasn't so good. He's a good lecturer, very charming when lecturing.
Good teacher, req'd homework really helpful, exams similar to homework problems. Hard to know where you stand throughout the quarter because doesn't curve until end of quarter (I don't think he curved our class AT ALL). A little repetitive (spent the first 10-20 minutes of each class reviewing last lecture's material). Overall good professor.
Awesome teacher! He loves it when you sit in the front. If he see's that you are putting in effort he is very willing to help you out. Actually cares how his class does. HATES laziness. Fun to talk to about parties and what not. If you wanna kiss ass talk about surfing as well.
Great professor. I thought his explanations and power points were very helpful and very clear. Mandatory hw, but it's really not that hard. Tests are fairly easy. Overall, very fun prof that likes to blow random stuff up in class for demos!
He makes the exams easy. And there are only 3 hw over a quarter. Final is to write a 4 page in-class analytical essay about spectra, which is kind of crazy. Except for providing simple exams, there's nothing good about him. Always late for class, ambiguous explanations, and messy notes. In short, you just learn nothing in this class.
Great teacher!! such a cool guy, it'll be hard not to like chem =).. lectures are good definatly go cuz he does example problems. Also he likes to surf so if you do too def talk to him about it and maybe hell like the class better and go easy. practice exams are helpful, the class is moderately difficult, do the suggested and assigned hw!
Talks really, really, really fast. Especially when going over reviews for exams. Funny guy, very likable, but you better read before coming to class or you'll have no idea what's going on. It goes along with how fast he speaks. Really, he talks FAST.
He was always late for class. So we got like 40 minutes of lecture instead of 50 everytime. It's hard to stay on top of things in his class. Exams are difficult. He likes to trick you on them too.
Augustine showed up to class late for most of the quarter due to a class he had before ours. : / As a result, he kind of rushed through the material. However, he was helpful in lecture and went through many examples, cracking jokes as he went along. His tests were REALLY difficult though. I definitely recommend studying long and hard for them.
Professor Augustine was an absolute delight in the classroom. His tests are easy because he thoroughly explains the material as well as his expectations beforehand, not because they are trivial. His final was to write 4 pages which may OR MAY NOT include discussing spectroscopy. It was a freebie and if you wrote a rigid textbook answer, shame on you
He is a very funny and nice guy. He talks really fast, so that it's hard to catch up with him. His exams (especially his final) was really hard. His curve was NOT good at all. But, he is very very helpful!
Prof. Augustine is a nice and funny guy. His lectures are pretty good but I think he should do harder examples in class just so we're more prepared for the tests. His tests are not easy and you have to study hard for it. Overall, the class is highly recommended!
Dr. Augustine was the best chemistry teacher I've ever had. He definitely knew what he was talking about and he made the class a lot of fun. Beware of hard exams and a disappointing class curve however...
He provides thorough explanations - especially in office hours, and is an all around nice guy. Once, he switched from talking about acid-base equilibria to surfing. Augustine's amazing. I hope he teaches my future chemistry courses.
One of the best teachers I have ever had! His class is very well organized and he most definitely sets you up for success. There was mandatory homework every week, but it was only 3 problems. He also puts up all his lecture notes on smartsite. Overall a very excellent professor.
He is a very clear speaker and definitely knows his stuff. He is always late five or ten minutes though. Additionally, he rarely gives +'s or -'s on grades.
Not only is he one of the hottest professors around, but he truly understands his material and wants you to get it too. I would highly recommend this guy as a professor for any Chemistry course. It's a bonus if you happen to have a thing for guys with purple shirts, orange belts, and wild hair.
Matt thinks outside of the box (1-D with infinite potential walls!) I loved his class because I didn't even need to use the textbook once. I just paid attention in lecture, made sure I thoroughly understood the lecture notes, and did the homework, and I got an A!
Talks really fast, comes to class late and is often behind according to the syllabus but overall likeable easy to understand professor.
His lectures are great, super clear and helpful. He does a ton of example problems, solving them slowly and they're exactly like you'll see on tests. Biggest problem is you get about half the time you need for the midterms, so no one finishes and the averages suck. Definitely would take him again, just be prepared for really hard tests
By far the best professor I've had my two years at Davis. Knows his stuff, explains everything clearly and in depth, very humorous and enthusiastic. Makes chemistry understandable and interesting. Homework assignments are good indications of midterm/final material. Such a great professor compared to Toupadakis. Take him, not Toupadakis!
Best Chemistry professor I could ask for! This was my second time taking the class and I dreaded it, but Augustine made this course a lot more interesting this time around! He's very enthusiastic and his lectures are crystal clear. He really did his best to prepare us for exams, especially the final. Totally recommend taking his class!
Augustine is easily one of the best chemistry professors here! His lectures are clear and organized, and he's prone to cracking jokes at almost anything. He's a very "far out and cool dude." His gnarly personality makes him very approachable for questions. Plus, he provides very useful review sessions before the midterms and the final.
Amazing professor! Highly recommended. His tests are pretty hard but the average is low, just make sure you go to the review sessions! They help a lot! Even though we start class late, he still gets through everything efficiently and effectively. He's super chill and funny too.
Amazing professor. Tells you exactly what's going to be on the exam and is always happy to clarify to answer questions. Pretty laid back in class too and makes an attempt to do demos, which is nice. :D Highly recommend.
Augustine is an awesome guy. You could never fall asleep in one of his lectures. Does a lot of examples in his lectures so you know what to expect for the exams. His review sessions are also very helpful. Even though this class is a challenge, I really enjoyed it. I actually felt like I learned the material.
He made 2B an enjoyable class (I hated 2A with Toup). He makes the dull material as interesting as he can with demos and examples. His in-class examples and homework problems are similar to exam problems. His practice tests are also similar to actual exams (sometimes the same!). He truly wants us to do well, and understand and enjoy the material.
Professor Augustine is a pretty chill professor. He's extremely clear when it comes to certain topics, and is always willing to students out. Beware of hard tests, and a disappointing class curve.
Great professor! Go to every lecture; he does examples and explains the concepts very well. Do the practice exams and go to the review sessions for the exams - it's the best way of preparing. Sometimes a bit late to lecture, but he always got everything done. Made a conceptually difficult 2B class enjoyable!
Man. Super disappointing curve!! I basically got the grade I would have gotten without a curve at all. He is a great teacher, learned a lot,and even considered majoring in chemistry because of this class, but not anymore because his curve freaking sucks
Good professor. Very clear and straight to the point (doesn't confuse you). Makes sure you absorb material (steady pace). Makes Chemistry interesting. Tests are tricky, but do-able.
Horrible curve! If you rely on curves for your grade, then avoid him! If you want to learn a lot but get a C you can take him! Doesn't give pluses or minuses so a B+ is a B and a C+ is a C. He is funny and entertaining and exams are so easy that the curve basically keeps your grade where it would have been without a curve. Would not take him again
I am soo frustrated! Doesn't give + and -'s, and those totally affect your GPA!! (Except A+) and he basically did not curve! If you want your hard work to pay off, don't take Augustine's class because your grade for the class will not represent how much you have learned. >:(
Augustine is a great professor. His course really pushed me to utilize my resources (office hours, workshops, and reviews). In my opinion, he goes through the material super fast, so reviewing the material on your own time is a must. If you're up for a challenge, I recommend him!
Amazing professor. I've heard 2B is the hardest and I was really worried because I barely scraped by with a B- in Toup's 2A and quite honestly, I was pretty much mentally done with chemistry after that class.I ended up getting a solid A, completely understanding the material, and enjoying myself all in one. Best professor ever!
Augustine makes lecture interesting with funny jokes and remarks. Very organized with his lectures and has them posted on smartsite. Tries to show many demos as long as they relate to the topic. The midterms were long and free responses were difficult. However he usually hints at what will be on the midterms at his review session.Overall great prof
Augustine is an excellent lecturer. He is so smart and speaks very eloquently. Has the most organized lectures ever! He does not like wasting time and is very straight up which could come off as intimidating sometimes. If you want to learn chemistry and are willing to work for a good grade, take his class! Highly recommended :)
He's probably one of the BEST Chemistry professors at UC Davis. Made everything crystal clear. Very funny guy, and a good lecturer.
Best professor I have had at Davis. very funny. If you interrupt his class to ask a stupid question he'll make a funny joke at your expense. He is also a very clear lecturer and his expectations of you are crystal clear. If you attend every lecture and can understand every example problem he goes over in lecture you'll get an A like i did
He's a great professor, one of the best at UC Davis. He's funny and his lectures are very clear and organized. Make sure you go to review sessions--they're very helpful as he goes over practice exams and tells you what to know for the test. He legitimately cares about how his students do on the exams. Definitely take him if yo u have the chance.
He looks like Elton John and is even more saucy. He is a fantastic professor - extremely clear. Hes also hilarius and makes fun of dumb students. If you want an A, dont stress. Go to every lecture, make sure you know how to do every example problem he does in class, and skim the book to understand. Dont spend energy on improving your lab grade.
His class wasn't easy, but that shouldn't be expected. He is however a really good lecturer. He made everything very clear and did a lot of practice problems. One of the best professors I've had.
Positives: CRYSTAL clear lectures - really amazing chem professor. Strong voice! Practice tests were very helpful, do them and u'll get good test scores. I had TA Tim Newman and he was amazing as well!! --Negatives: Augustine gets a little cocky at times, and I heard his curve was unfair (No A-'s/B+'s). However, best chem professor i had so far. :)
Augustine is probably my favorite professor I have ever had. He is funny, extremely clear, and his Problem Sets are identical to the math questions he puts on his exams. Exams can be a bit challenging but overall I would recommend this professor for anyone who is taking 2B. Loved his class. I wish I could do it again just because.
He assigns weekly homework which is an easy grade booster. VERY GOOD lecturer compared to other chem professors I've had. Tricky tests, but if you attend the TA's review sessions it should help. Do all the practice exams!
Really good lecturer, sarcastic to people who ask kind of stupid questions, which is funny for the rest of us. Tests are doable if you study hard, but he curved down on a midterm when I had him winter quarter, so my A- was a B! Other than that, I liked the class. TA's were SUPER HELPFUL and helped us do well on final! GO TO REVIEWS.
He's a pretty good lecturer but I remember being confused on a lot of things on the tests, though chemistry is definitely not my strong suit. When I had him last year he down-curved the class (like a B became a C), so be warned.
His tests were so easy, he down-curves them.
Prof. Augustine is a very good lecturer. He tries his best to explain things in the simplest terms and he works out a lot of problems to get his students to try to understand concepts. I'm not really sure whether it was test anxiety or if his tests were hard, but he doesn't try to put any trick questions on the test.
Very nice professor. Do examples in details and they are really helpful in exams. He also do interesting demos in class. And most of all, he is a interesting person!
Exciting guy, witty as hell, and knew how to teach. His exams are hard, but pay attention to his lecture examples and review sessions! Show up early, they get packed.... Literally every 2B class will come, they're legendary. He commonly divulges test answers and makes Chem understandable.
He's a good profeessor. I was scared to take him after hearing he doesn't give - or +'s which is true. And after getting a B in Enderle, it made me more wary especially since there was a downcurve last year. But seriously with hard work, and the best ta ever!!!! I was able to get an A. Take his review sessions seriously and pay careful attention!
Professor Augustine is super nice and a great lecturer! He always reviews the materials that was learned the day before. He tells you almost everything that is on the exams. However, the curve is basically nonexistent, so if you're looking to ace his class, be sure to do well on all his exams, since there's no room for mistakes.
One of the funniest professors you will ever have! Class gets filled up really fast because every Chem student sits in on lectures. Review sessions are helpful! Go to office hours and don't be afraid to ask questions even if he gives a sarcasc remark at first. Most of the time he just wants to make a joke but is really interested in helping.
Augustine is funny and has clear lectures. His curve is non existent. Likes to play tricks on tests, and made a test all short answer multiple choice which screwed me up. Go to review sessions to get hints on what is on the test. Repeats things several times in lecture but makes some mistakes. Was behind in our quarter and rushed thru last few chap
He's a funny guy and a great teacher, but his tests were hard and he likes to play tricks on them. Study his practice exams, but hey, sometimes he decides to completely change the exam structure without informing the class at all. Go to his review sessions and lectures. There's no curve though, so work hard if you want a good grade.
Comparing him with Toupadakis, Augustine is God. I was disappointed with the way he handled things this quarter (i.e spent last two lecture days on two new whole chapters) Those two new chapters were the primary focus for the final. I took AP Chem and still got a B. Don't know why people give him high ratings his notes suck and mumbles a lot.
Augustine is overrated. He is not bad, but he is not good either. The only problem is that he likes to make his tests harder than you would expect(he misleads you about their difficulty) and his laid back attitude rubs off on students. If you want to get a good grade, study after every lec and go over the HARD problems in the textbook.
Let's just say that the class average for the first midterm was an F. He is very misleading. I honestly don't know how he expects his students to do well on his exams in 50 mins with this level of difficulty. Only 1 partial credit questions and ridiculously hard questions. Not recommended!
He needs to be nicer to his students. He is way too cocky.
Probably the best gen chem professor. His exams are super difficult though, but if you put in the time and study you will do well.
Augustine is a very clear and organized lecturer. He explains the material well and is engaging to listen to. However, his tests are crazy hard and he can be mean to students. I would def take him again but just go in knowing you'll need thick skin.
awesome professor! he makes CHE 2B so much fun, of course, with a lot of work. Definitely take him!
Augustine was really clear in class but because of this expected a lot on the tests. Make sure to study and the class is passable.
Augustine was a pretty good professor overall. His lectures are helpful and he is good at explaining different concepts. His tests were not too hard either. If you can get him for CHE2B, I would highly recommend taking his class.
Professor Augustine is a great teacher. He walks through example problems in class and goes through a powerpoint during each lecture. Before tests, he has a review session and directly states what will be on the test. Nice guy, but lots of sarcasm (I enjoyed it at least). Just don't ask stupid questions when the answer is clearly on the board.
Good lecturer but exams are more difficult (second exam is all multiple choice). Good review sessions and cares about his students (as long as they show some potential). Can be blunt. Like with all profs, don't expect info to magically appear in your brain. Curve might not be so good because all the high achieving students register for him.
Very informative yet entertaining professor. A really nice guy who enjoys what he does, you feel welcomed in his class. Material was difficult but he leads you along pretty well in the lectures. Would recommend him over the other 2B professors.
augustine comes off as arrogant but he has very clear lectures and works very hard on the review sessions. he also has cool experiments in class. the class was hard, though.
I love this dude He comes off as arrogant but If you talk to him outside of class he is the coolest person ever. He has super clear lectures so attend He solves problems in class on board and is very helpful during office hour. 1st exam was hard terrible TA and 2nd was so easy. Final was doable I really love it Curve is... non existent
Very friendly and approachable, also very helpful for after class hours. Lectures are very clear and laid out. He likes to joke around a lot but that's what makes him such an awesome professor. Very go with the flow, does a lot of demos which is pretty cool. Tests are fair but time allotted on them is never enough.I enjoyed his lectures & his class
Talks too much, teaches too little and has an arrogant personality. He doesn't go into the theory of the problems. Just shows how to solve them. Really useless if you're taking future chemistry classes. I had to go back and learn everything that he was skipping out on after each lecture. Curve didn't exist even with poor averages on his midterms.
Augustine seems like a cool guy and his class is easy to pass, but hard to get an A. His tests were difficult and he relies on examples in lecture, which are good to memorize how to do the problem, but bad to understand why. No curve and does not assign + or -. My B+ turned into a B.
Also definitely had a B+, but ended up with a B. If UC Davis follows the +- policy, he should too. Watch out and be warned!
Teaching-wise, Augustine is a good professor in that he makes sure concepts are explained clearly. But he's made several sexist comments about women. To a classmate, he said, "Wow, that's a good question for a woman." My TA, also a woman, had mentioned before that he told her he was surprised how, for a woman, she was so good at chemistry.
This was the only class I ever got something less than an A. Lab reports had grad student level of grading criteria with TAs that took weeks to look over your report drafts. I did my best to match their criteria, but even the tiniest of errors caused enormous grade cuts. Augustine himself was chill, but the class was inexhoribly difficult.
