He's a really good professor except if you don't show up to class and write good notes you probably won't do well. Understand the homework and you will do well on the exams. Gave out a bunch of free points, doesn't curve anything but those free points are great.

Barry is THE MAN. Enough said, he is a very good teacher and made Statics 2 a hell of a lot more bearable than it normally is. He is also very helpful during office hours. Very into tea. Take if you can.

The class as a whole wasn't the easiest for me. I had to put in a lot of work, but Barry was very helpful in office hours. He does give a lot of partial credit, and if the class/ a lot of people don't do well, he will give extra credit. He's just a great guy overall.

Fluids is supposed to be one of the worst experiences for MechEs. Dr Barry throws that connotation in the trash. He's very concept heavy but once you understand his material you can solve any problem. Great professor and an even nicer guy. Also he brought his dog to the final so major bonus points for that

Greatest guy, you will learn and retain the info. But Barry is also the hardest grader ever. Not a lot of partial credit!!! Would still take him again and again, because i learned a lot, and learned not to make the same errors again.

Pretty easy grading scale for the course. 50% of grade in non-exam, but attendance is mandatory due to TopHat participation and quizzes. First exam was rough, but the last two have been pretty easy. Not a lot of HW and design project is simple was you read into it. Made statics an enjoyable and pretty easy class in the end. Overall, pretty good!

Cool guy. Posts PDF of textbook. Exams are hard, but fair. The problems are similar to textbook examples, usually with a slight twist. Gives extra credit on exams too. Sometimes cancels class for no reason, says he will post a lecture video, and then never does it. Usually ends up cutting out content at the end of the semester because of it.

Dr. Barry is awesome for statics and fluids. You learn a lot more in his classes than in any other professors. He is one of the best professors in the entire department. If you take Dr. Barry, you will feel more prepared for any applied class compared to taking another professor. Dr. Barry is recommended if you want to learn.

Dr. Barry's homework will help you to learn, so definitely do it carefully. Exams are not that hard but you should study a lot (do all of the intermediate/ challenging problems in the back of the textbook) to get good grades. Projects are long but fun. Sometimes forget to post homework/exam solutions on courseweb.

Dr. Barry is a polarizing prof. He enjoys scaring students and being sarcastic. If you talk to him outside of class you'll find he's a good guy and willing to help. Do your assignments, study and you'll be fine. Every class that I had with him over-prepared me for the next class. If you're willing to put in the work he's a great professor.

People say things bad about Dr. Barry, but I think he is fine. He does scare people sometimes during class but his tests are all based on the lectures and homework. Barry is the best, but only if you truly want to learn the material. If youre only trying to squeak by and do as little as possible, then take someone else. Barry will make you work and he grades tough, but you will know your stuff when youre done. I took him for every class he taught except ENGR0135 and I got As in all of them, but I EARNED it.

I felt Barry was a mean prof when I got my homework and test scores. Now I appreciate him a lot. He makes you work for the materials instead of just give you a nice grade. You will get a very comprehensive understanding of the topics after taking his class. Thanks for his statics 1, so I did not fail biomechanics.

This is a flip class. The weekly homework is usually building circuits in a group (easy for most of the time). He also provides old homework. And the quiz/exams pretty much mirror the old homework. Learned a lot from Dr. Barry.

I had Barry for both MEMS 0031 & 0051 this summer online. - Super available (TWENTY HOURS of office hours a week!) - SO much material, exams very hard 0031: A ton of diff eq and practice. Ended with an A. 0051: I worked my way up from D+ to B-. It is possible but a nightmare to do well in. Study group NEEDED to do well! Participate and practice!

Dr. Barry is actually a really good professor if you're willing to put the work in to do well. He has standards and expectations for you as a student but he was a good lecturer and was EXTREMELY available outside of class if you have questions. Circuits exams weren't difficult, but you have to know what you're doing.

Honestly a really good dude. Can be tough but he accommodated for his students very well for online classes. I would take him again.

Dr. Barry has extensive knowledge of the material and gives really helpful answers and feedback. He is a bit intimidating, but he was my only professor who adapted to remote learning. He made everything more engaging, and was understanding of everyones situation during a pandemic. He is tough, but if you put in the work you should be fine.

The responses on here are criminal. Yes, Barry is a hard professor and he will make you really work for your grade. Coming out of his classes, I have always felt like I truly understood the material and was ready to apply it to future courses. He challenges you up-front, but in subsequent classes, you will be well prepared.

Dr. Barry clearly liked teaching this course and therefore was a good professor. His office hours are super helpful and homework reflected lectures. Quizzes were easy but our final was questions from the FE exam which was difficult. Overall one of the better choices for this class

Dr. Barry is a tough but excellent teacher. He covers lot of material and expects a lot out of his students, but you will consequently learn more with him. I had Dr. Barry for 0031 and 0051 and recommend him for both courses if you want to rigorously learn the material. Tests can be brutal but he often will give extra credit.

Dr. Barry is my favorite professor at Pitt. The classes are very difficult, but that's what makes you a better engineer. If you fail his class, you simply weren't putting enough effort in. All the materials you need are on canvas, and he is EXTREMELY accessible for office hours. His dog is also really nice and comes to class sometimes.

Very knowledgeable professor. You will learn the material. You have to put in the work for your grade, but Dr. Barry definitely is willing to help if you are struggling. Quizzes and HW weekly. Previous quizzes, exams, etc are on github and you can use them to study. Good choice for a prof, gets trashed on by lazy idiots.

For individuals seeking a genuine grasp of the subject matter and a true learning experience, I highly recommend Dr. Barry as an exceptional professor. His lectures and Top Hat assignments are particularly noteworthy. However, if you tend to exhibit laziness or have a low GPA, I would not suggest enrolling in his course.

Electrical circuits is difficult and Dr. Barry writes challenging quizzes/exams. You need to study lots and understand the content in order to do well. Dr. Barry is a sadistic, yet semi-thoughtful professor. Not the worst, not the best. He's the mechanical engineering standard. Pay attention in class, take good notes, and you'll survive.

Professor Barry is an over hated professor. His classes are difficult but clear. He provides all the resources needed to excel in the class.

Dr. Barry is honestly one of the realest professors you will ever meet. He is very upfront on expectations. His lecture videos are equivalent to Nero's videos, but he actually gives us time in class to work with each other and actually learn the content. There is so much Barry hate, mainly from the Premed BioE's that can't handle a GPA drop.

Dr. B spells out everything you need to do to succeed. He gives you a ton of different ways to learn the material and you will see test questions so many times before you take the test. A lot of people complain the tests are hard but the test problems are already done in the book and lecture videos and in class and on the homework and quizzes. smh.

Good professor. Provided an outline of what is expected. Always willing to help. Fluids is challenging but he is a Good choice for this class. Lot of bad rep from students in 0135, mainly because its their first time taking an engineering class

Very difficult course, and Dr. Barry is a tough yet engaging professor. He covers a lot of material quickly, and you're expected to understand a wide variety of topics for each exam. The textbook for this course is incredibly helpful, and I strongly recommend reading each chapter and looking through additional practice problems and FE examples.

Matthew Barry is an amazing professor and one of my favorites at Pitt. If you get to know him hes a very swell guy. Highly reccomend attending office hours for this class.

The homework and concepts were difficult, but the exams were ridiculously easy. All of the questions came straight from the textbook. Very accessible outside of class. Barry is much more enthusiastic about fluids than he is about statics. Would recommend

My favorite professor, the only one who knows how to properly run a flipped class for sure. Online lectures prime you for in-class as he starts off class by giving a run-through of the lecture and then continues to walk you through how to apply the topic to real-life scenarios. Encourages group work and is an approachable and funny guy.

Despite Dr. Barry doesn't like teaching circuits, he is one of the best when it comes to simplifying circuits in a way that makes complicated circuits just make sense. The only way to do well in his classes is attend class, engage, and do the homework. I would 10/10 take him again for circuits.

I thought I learned the most in Statics with Dr. Barry, but once I took MEMS 0071 with him I feel like I have a pretty good understanding of the topics. The group project was tedious, but doable I would highly recommend taking 71 with Barry.

Dr Barry is the best intro to fluids professor in the department. You come out learning so much, you just have to actually put in the work and care about the class. Like with any Dr Barry class, he will only care as much as the class/students care to learn.

I don't know why professor Barry gets a bad rep. He is one of the kindest, most genuine professors I've ever had the pleasure of taking a class with. The bad reviews given to Dr. Barry are from students who are too lazy to put effort into their education. From the first day of class, Dr. Barry informs us of his expectations and has a syllabus that details the entire class. His exams are multiple-choice FE-style questions, a nationally recognized exam most of us will have to take at some point.

Hard class but Dr. Barry is very accessible outside of class and cares about his students but he can be tough on us. Big project at the end of the year that is time consuming and unnecessarily tedious in the midst of finals. FE style MC questions are quite difficult and don't showcase your full knowledge.

As long as you study, you will be fine. There are extra credit opportunities on exams and the exams are all multiple choice, in the same style as a test all engineers have to take eventually, so they do well to prepare you. The class starts off slow then picks up so stay ahead of your work. Barry is caring and the TAs are good.

Flipped classroom & engaging textbook. Cares for students and has a ton of office hours. Huge TA staff with many office hours as well. Lectures are example-based and involve submitted worksheets. Fair and straightforward grading. Many opportunities for extra credit. Exams can be subtly tricky, but aren't intended to make you do poorly.

Great professor, but under a lot of pressure. Very accessible outside of classroom and if you put in the work you can do well in his class. Be prepared for the exams and group project. Exams are only multiple choice which sucks if you're not good at that testing type. In the group project he can be a little harsh with grading.

This class is not easy but it is very simple to do well in. Read the book, do the work and get the extra credit. He may insult you and can be mean but he offers more support than most other classes. He gives you everything you need to do well and students who are struggling in his class should ask themselves if they have done the work to succeed

He's a sarcastic guy, but he doesn't deserve the bad ratings he's gotten. He tries to make the lectures interesting, and he's one of the better flipped classroom courses I've taken. There's not much to complain about, although he does cold call if he knows your name. I'd definitely take him again though.
