Very high standards and very demanding but great class. Leaves students lots of room to write about what interests them in a text, but hard material and very critical grading.
The grade in this class is dependant on the essays given, which are not hard. The teacher is helpful but it is hard to know how he wants you to write because it changes from essay to essay. At times he talks down to us, like we are a charity case.

Dr. Becker is very passionate about literature and it really shows in his teaching. There are a lot of essays, but they are only one page. he requires peer editing, but it really helps you write a more precise essay. Very willing to help his students. Overall he is a great instructor.
Loads of essays BUT they are based on personal experience :). Strict on sentence structure. Pretty nice guy. Excuses can get you far in his classes.
What a great professor and you can tell he loves what he does!
Dr. Becker is a great guy.
Not very clear and his "help" with essays left most of the class confused. Nice guy, but too smart to be teaching at this level.
The crying Man! That should be his name, and it got on my NERVES. He crys at least once every session. He is very confusing at times, but I got an A in the class and only read one of the assigned books!

Very smart guy, but he changes his mind on when things are due very often. I hated that. he seemed very sensible, but hard grader.
Sonny Bono! Hes a nice guy but pretends to give u freedom on assignments when he he has an idea of exactly what he wants. For rough draft I'd write anything because I knew he'd start saying "well, u should all start this way...and say this..and this..." So that's when u take notes, and do exactly what he wants. Then u get an A.
I loved this class. He was one of the most passionate teachers I ever met. We read some really interesting books and poems in that class. The test very very easy, if you read you will pass. The final was an in class essay the topic was our choice and he gave us pelenty of time to prepare.
In the begining it was not so bad, but then when we had to read, the books were extremely boring and difficult to understand. He is very emotional. But ok teach.
Really good teacher. He is SO passionate about the stories he tells. As long as you come to class and pay attention you will pass, he gives you what to expect on the quizzes and is a funny guy!
He's a really cool guy. He takes off points for being late and is strict with cell phone use. But his class is very easy and he tends to cut class short alot. His quizes are also really simple
he is so passionate about the assigments' topics that he forgets he is an english teacher. the worst and the harders because he does not teach you anything. he expects that you know everything by now. he always balme your previous english teacher. he states that is not his job to teach you what other english teachers should have taught you.
hes a really good teacher. loves to teach english. i enjoyed his class very much
Great Teacher!
He is passionate about the subject matter which always helps me to become interested. He tells you exactly what will be on the quiz and the exams. The only way you couldn't pass is if you decided not to attend class at all. Keeping up with the reading is a must but the reading is slow-paced and is usually summarized in class.
Exceptional teacher, but he is a hard grader. We had to write 6 essays. There's a lot of research you have to do for 5 essays. Make sure you know how to write an essay and use the MLA format before you enroll in his class if not you will struggle to pass the class.
ONE OF THE BEST TEACHERS AT CSUDH! I GO OUT OF MY WAY TO GET INTO A CLASS THAT HE'S TEACHING AND WILL BASE MY SCHEDULE AROUND THAT CLASS. IT'S TOTALLY WORTH IT.
Loved this professor! English is my major and he taught me a lot about writing. He gives essay topics on life experiences which are easy to write about. He also gives individual consultations to critique your essay. I found these very beneficial and was fond of the way he attended to each students needs, since very few professors are that helpful. Extremely recommended! (:
This professor is an extremly hard grader. He is very helpful. His essay topics are based on life stories. There were 3 quizes that were easy.
Difficult grader and the assignments had the class boggled. He is passionate and loves English, so don't think for a second you are going to get an easy grade. Be assured that whatever grade you receive, you work hard for.
Lol he cried while reading an essay in class...he's a good teacher though all we did was write papers and do exercises simple class
Pretty easy!Work is in groups, and quizzes are easy! interesting though at sometimes boring! Totally recommended!
Matt Becker opened up a world of literature for me that I have been totally unable to close since. He introduced me to The Little Prince, and Charles Dickens, as well as Amy Goodman, and put in my head the idea of studying Latin to get at the real meaning of certain English language texts. I have not spoken to him in several years...
Extremely great professor. He lets you make up any work that you missed, he definitely cares a lot about his students. :) We only did five essays, but they weren't that bad. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND TAKING HIM!
He is very passionate about this subject! He is very helpful with exams. Only down fall is he is soft spoken. Just take good notes and read the book and you'll be fine.
He's a really cool professor. There are 5 essays. He grades essays tough though but he gives really good feedback on roughdrafts and if you get a low grade on any essay he lets you rewrite it and you have til the end of the semester to turn in a rewritten essay. The hw is grammar so it's kind of hard.He lets you turn in late hw.
He is a great professor!! i loved his class super easy!
I loved the literature he picked for this class. But, he was a little confusing about what he wanted from students. His lectures were a little confusing sometimes...He is a hard grader too. However, if you ask him for help he is very nice!!
He is an easy professor who is very comprehensible. He extended deadlines for essays, and is such an easy grader. He tends to cry in class when he reads personal essays, which can be pretty funny. Take him, he will help you become a better writer.
i do NOT like his way of teaching, well he doesn't even teach. all book work which he does NOT even explain. Near the end of the semester he lets you turn in ANYTHING you want for a higher grade -.-
-Tough Grader, BEWARE!!! you ill be re-doing most of your work! He has a PHD in ENG so he has high expectations. Unless you're an english major or an author/poet do not take his class
attendance mandatory, u can have like 3 excused but besides that he drops ur grade, makes u read any 500pg book throughout the semester which is not bad if ur consistent i didnt finish mine and still managed to do good there are about three inclass essays and three outside their not that hard im not good at writing &pulled off a B- he's quite easy
He is very confusing and a hard grader. At times he may seem as if he is rude when checking the papers but according to him, he doesn't mean to be rude. He gives homework for every class meeting. The good thing is he lets you redo he work you did wrong and turn it in before the end of the semester.
Professor Becker's class is not an easy breeze. If you're up for a good challenge, take him. Besides that, you're going to have to get your papers revised until you come up with something he deems passable. He helps you edit your paper and extends deadlines until the end of the semester. He's a nice person, but he's demanding as a professor.
He is a very good professor. I learn about comma splice, semi-colon and other grammar mistakes. He can be very mean if people don't listen to him and eat during class. He is very strict when it comes to writing. Good Luck
Very easy class . Just to many vocabulary test and essays.
he is perfect I like him.
He was great but a tough grader for the most part but as long as you have a genuine paper with careful attention to detail you'll pass. 4 out of class essays and like 2 in class (ones for the final) and a couple of pop quizzes here and there that focus on minor details so resd the whole packet he gives you.
Read papers aloud for feedback. Books needed every lecture day. Tough grader on two major papers. One paragraph assinments. Every point counts. Not really clear on what exactly he wants your papers to have. Gets to know all his students names, expect to be called on.
Hes over all a great teacher, but when it comes to writing an essay, your going to write 1 about 3 times just to get it the way he wants it. TOUGH GRADER.
Professor Becker is a tough grader but like any other class if you work for it you will pass. I passed and I'm pretty slow. He gives quizzes which are pretty easy. You must read because the following day he will give you an in depth question.
Took this class back in fall 2014. His class was composed of reading a book that was interesting, and gave easy vocabulary quizzes, I didn't even study for those quizzes and I still passed. Overall, good class discussions. A little bit of reading for homework.
Dr. Pepper was a very tough grader. He wanted his essays the way he wanted them and if you didn't give him what he expected, he returned it with a failing grade. At least he lets you redo the essays. He is very unclear with what he wants from you, and makes you think more than you should. Great class discussions though! Very kind person too.
professor Becker is one of the worst teachers, he is so confusing and a really tough grader. he told me I was doing good for his class but that it was on him if i passed or not he ended up failing me, and not only me but also i asked my classmates who i knew and they told me they failed too. I would not recommend this teacher to no one.
Expect to have multiple short summary papers on readings (articles). Also two major essays. Gives prompt and goes over it as a class. Expects you to go beyond what is "obvious." It's an okay class, he is a nice guy.
Takes attendance regularly, has certain rules such as no cell phones, no leaving the class, no food or drinks, must bring the book or he'll take points off. Overall did about 4 long papers (including midterm/final) and 6 short analysis. Uses articles and films.
Dr. becker is very helpful and he is very accomodating if you do the work. as a person he's a cool guy but as a Professor he's boof with his grading
Kinda boof.. Cool guy and all but Professor wise he boof af
Whatever you do, avoid this professor! He never gives straightforward answers and is super picky about his essays. He is very emotional and cries which makes class uncomfortable. He deducts points if you do not attend class and you're only allowed to redo the first 2 assignments. Will never take him again!
He is a really uptight hard grader professor. If you really want to learn how to write a real essay, take him! But if you I do not recommend him. He puts you in a stage where you give up but do not give up. Show him that you are trying your best! I recommend the learning center as well. Be ready to write lots of essays! Best of luck!
Professor is very strict when it comes to grading, whether it be homework or essays. He has very high standards especially for an Eng 111 class. If ur paper don't meet his expectations he gives you "NC" or No Credit. But gives you another chance to redo your essays. But if you don't, it's basically an F. Accumulate enough "NC's" and you WILL fail.
Professor is very unclear on what he wants. He will make you write about whatever the topic is and then grade you very harsh about it. There were times where he will ask us to bring in an article that had cliff notes, and then sometimes would not approve of the article you brought in, so you get marked absent, which was unnecessary.
Becker is a nice professor but he assigns A LOT of essays. Yes it is a writing class, but for the majority of the semester we would have a 3-4 page essay due which can get to be a bit much with other classes. He's a tough grader in the sense that he rarely gives an A, but if you write a solid essay you can easily get a passing grade.
Assigns 2-3 pages of written work every time you go to class. Makes you read a lot. Very harsh grader. Unnecessary amount of work.
Dr. Becker is great!! He is very passionate and cried a couple times during class but he is still great. Always let people turn assignments in late. Cares so much about his students but sometimes tough grader. I would take him again anytime. Throughout the semester got B's and C's and received a B+ so I'm happy with my grade. Would recommend
Dr. Becker is awesome. He gives vocab quizzes once a week, and 5 essays to do throughout the semester. For assignments, he assigns stories to read before coming to class & in class gives you a question relating to it. He is very caring & friendly, but does grade essays harsh. Put in 120% effort and NEVER do anything last minute, especially essays.
Will never take him again. Nice guy, but is not clear about what he wants in his essays. Then he grades so hard practically saying your whole essay was not what he wanted. You will have essays due about every time you come into class on broad and overwhelming topics. Very time consuming and stressful. I suggest looking into other professors.
Very difficult Professor! He assigns a lot of work that is unnecessary and difficult. Leaves very condescending comments on papers and assignments. I highly recommend a different professor. He is unhappy if you do not agree with him and your grade would suffer because of it. Do not do it!
Best English professor I have had. Work is tough but is manageable. As long as you pay attention and stay on top of the work, the class is a breeze. I got A's on all of the essays which make up the majority of your grade, so make sure you put all your effort into them. He grades fairly and is always helpful if you have any questions.
Dr. Becker is a super nice guy and is very reasonable if you communicate with him. He is a very tough grader and rips every assignment to shreds with comments. He asks you to revise and resubmit your work if he does not like it and this is a nice gesture, but the work piles up with revisions and current papers that are due. Also very toughly topics
Very good professor! His essay topics were so good and interesting! Yes there is a lot of writhing and papers but it really helps us to improve our writing. I learned so much in this class and I was happy I earned a B+ :)
Where do I begin.... If you are taking his class right now, its either because ur bold or u had no choice and he was the last one with room in his class (for a reason). He isnt clear about what he wants, he only grades with what HE BELIEVES and not how its suppose to be, unlike other English teachers. Most of my classmates failed.. even me
Not sure why this professor made us analyze childrens books from a Freudian perspective. We wasted so much time on how to read the beats of a poem. This class was useless and the professor will only give you give you a decent grade if you write word for word his thoughts and words. Ridiculous class, avoid at all costs
This professor is a good person who tries to be flexible and is accessible outside of class. But he's a horrible professor. He lectures too much, brings students down when they participate, and wants you to give him what he thinks is "right". I would never take him again.
This professor was the worst Ive ever had, throughout my 2 years here at dominguez this is the first class Ive ever failed, and it was all because he is a really tough grader and wants you to do ditch everything youve learned before in english and free write, but when you do it isnt good enough to him. He wont meet you halfway, challenging clas
He grades you on a couple of things... A couple of quizzes that are listed in the syllabus and sentence structure practice. He is very good at he does but is subjective about grading. He grades you on four different essays throughout the semester in which you select 3 to revise to the best of you ability to turn in as a final portfolio.
Honestly, one of the worst classes I've taken. He lectures all day every day about the same nonsense. He treats students as English majors, when mostly everyone is there for requirements. I lost track of how many times he cried. Grades impossible!! He wants you to write about all the crazy ideas he spits at you and then when you do he's still tough
IF YOU ARE NOT AN ENGLISH MAJOR DO NOT TAKE HIM. (or even if you are) stay away! This professor expects way too much from the papers. The first paper, NO ONE GOT A PASSING SCORE. He lets you re-sumbit, but it will add up as you have more papers to complete. Almost every class a paper or writing is due. Way to stressful.
Unclear with what he wants on his essays and writing assignments. Tough grader and leaves condescending comments on each writing assignment. Be prepared to write and understand each writing assignment, if not he will give you a low grade! Would not recommend unless youre really confident about your writing.
Needs to change up his teaching methods. He treats his students like high schoolers. If you have opinions that aren't what he thinks is right he will tell you you're wrong. Won't let you leave to the restroom during class or he will mark you absent. Cried almost every class. Went offline for the last few weeks of school, didn't respond to our email
Professor Becker is the worst professor I've ever taken throughout my entire college career. He wants people to engage in class and when student speak up he brings them down. Write condescending comments in your paper. If your opinions aren't similar to his its wrong. Avoid avoid! This class will take up majority of your time
Dr. Becker has been my favorite professor since I have been in college. If you are sensitive and do not like being challenged, take someone else. There is a lot of class interaction and papers, but the material was definitely interesting. The class is work, but I learned so much and feel way more confident in my writing. I am glad I took his class.
He is a caring professor who really loves what he does! he gives prompts and goes over them in class so you can have better direction but can get a bit confusing. He also tells you were what quotes to use for your papers but he is a tough grader. GIVES GOOD FEEDBACK! I adored his class he and I would most definitely take him again for ENG 350!
Probably the worst professor I've had at CSUDH, his readings are interesting but he grades as if were English majors. I'm just trying to pass the class since GWAR isn't offered currently and I'm struggling so hard. I'm barely passing the class
Very rude in his grading and to students. He is condescending. His grading structure is, what I consider, very unfair. Going from receiving A's and B's in English courses to receiving an F (55% in his class.) This isn't due to missing assignments or not knowing how to structure a paper. DO NOT TAKE THIS MANS COURSE. WASTE OF TIME
I recommend attending the Zoom meetings for easy extra credit pointsyou're gonna need them. Book can be found on LibGen, so no need to purchase. Takes a long time to grade HW. I started off with an F, but have a B now. The transcript assignments (although annoying) will be the easiest 100 points you'll earn. Tough grader on other papers though...
I am usually good at English, but when I took English 350 with Professor. Becker it was so hard to even get a good grade on an assignment. There is a lot of reading, videos to watch, assignments, and essays. They were due either on the same day or on Sundays of the same week. That is when I had to drop the course because it was super difficult.
If you are not an English major, do not take this class with this professor! So many papers. The feedback he gave was not helpful, to a certain extent. I appreciate that he was passionate about English, but he is a very tough grader. If you cannot keep up with his papers, you will fail the course. You have been warned.
He is honestly one of the best, inspirational teachers Ive ever had. He really loves what he does and thats what I want in a teacher. He has strong opinions but its ok to have different one but you need to know how to back up your information or hell mark you down. If you get the chance take him. Youll get a different perspective on English.
Had him in 2019. Only 4 essays to do. You send him your rough drafts, and then you meet up with him for an appointment at his office next week to discuss each essay and get his advice/edits. Use that advice to polish your papers and turn in the final papers. You will choose 3 of the 4 papers to turn in as a "portfolio" project. He's a chill guy.
