I like a professor who injects a bit of realism into the students. He told us on the first day of class that if you can't do well in this class, you should probably change your major. Not a difficult class. He obviously knows the subject matter well and I loved his dry sense of humor.
Great professor. Explains the material very well. Tests/HWs are challenging but still managable if you know the material. Even if you don't like the material being covered, class is always worth going to just for his dry sarcastic jokes.
know everything front to back for tests. slow grader but lenient on controversial questions. very funny, sarcasm is hillarious.
Easy class - Missed probably half of the lectures, barely opened the book and only for exams. He gave a huge curve at the end for all the dimwits that were failing. He's hilarious, class is easy, not bad to look at - take him ;)
very clear and helpful; read the book and come prepared to class. you are only as good as your preparation. accessible for office hours.
The test are extremely hard and there are a lot of pop quizes. He teaches using powerpoints that are online but it's hard to understand his lecture. The study guides do not cover the material on the test and the tests have nothing to do with the book or his notes. I made a B in the class only because I studied hard and I had a good grade in the lab
never taking Brewer for biology. For the lecture, he only use power point, and basiclly what he does is, he read every word from the ppt and sometime reword it a little. He is for office hour most the time. WORST BIOLOGY TEACHER EVER!!!!!
If I knew what I knew now, I would have avoided taking his class.
Course material in itself is difficult. Dr. Brewer did a decent job at lecturing, but you definitely need to read PRIOR to the class lecture and study on your own. People who received poor grades did not do this. Tests are multiple choice and fairly difficult. 6 Quizzes and extra points added either at the end or after each test.
Dr. Brewer is by far one of the worst professors I have ever had. He does not care about students or teaching in general, and it is obvious. His lectures are straight from the books powerpoints, and half the time he says, "blah, blah...you can read." His tests are extremely hard and are not representative of material covered in class at all!
I received an A in this class. Read, duh...so you can understand whats goin on in class. I had difficulty with some test questions so i went to his office hours and he was very helpful. His sense of humor cracks me up.
One of the WORST professors ever! I made an A in the class, but I feel like I hardly learned anything. What I learned was what I studied on my own. Lectures are pointless. They almost make you dislike biology. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
His class was hard but it was because you had to know how everything works more than memorize the stuff. He raised my borderline grade to an A. I would recommend studying with someone else. His sense of humor is funny and sarcastic. I liked him alot.
If you can't learn on your own, then do not take this professor. He is horrible with teaching the material. Pretty much reads off the powerpoint slides that's provided by the book's authors.
He was funny in class and kept my attention by jokes. However, his tests were hard. He purposely makes the questions tricky to try and make you miss it. Definitely read the section before the class. When you ask him questions, he looks at you like your stupid. I didnt like him.
Tests are hard and the study guides are useless. Reads over powerpoints but doesn't really explain much. Treats you like you're dumb if you ask questions. Wouldn't take him again. He's a cool person, but as a professor he doesn't really know how to teach because he doesn't care
He's awesome
He's very passionate about certain subjects. He is also VERY nice to look at-- has a George Clooney thing going for him
he enjoys making his students suffer a lot with his hard tests and boring lectures. all he does is read from the power point the whole time and doesnt explain a lot. his jokes are funny but they arent gonna help me understand the damn notes any better. i wouldn't take him again ever
Dr. Brewer is awesome. He's a funny guy. He reads of pp and it does get boring but class was still entertaining. The material in class is not difficult, just skim the book a little before coming to class and notes are always good to take. Quizzes were all popped but as long as you just keep going over the material it's pretty easy.
Only grades that come from the class are popped quizzes. He does give hints on when they are but it keeps you on edge and you always have to prepare for class as if you're going to have a quiz.He reads off of ppts and class can be boring. This class was really hard and studied a lot. The lab and final helped my grade.I'd be careful about the class.
I think I cracked my book open three times for the whole semester. Go to class and pay attention and there's no need to (besides, there are pop quizzes). If he thinks it's important, he tends to give two lectures on the same topic so it's hard to screw up. Monotone but his humor makes up for it.
Took class in summer, requires alot of reading, and practice quiz taking online to get a good grade. Quizes are tricky, but final was very true to online/book quiz question format. Has a sense of humor, pauses for question/answer period. Lots of info so carry light load if taking in summer. An A-B is very attainable if you don't slack.
I literally made F in first few quizzes, still managed to get a B in the end. He lectures very fast and his tests might seem tricky to some but they are not. Bottom line you'll have to read book, attend lecture, and APPROACH him in his office with ques. Girls!! he's cute, atleast i find him... lol
Dr. Brewer's pretty cool guy. His classes were dead boring though. Has pop quizzes, which is stupid cause they are actually pop tests since they are the only grades. The course is hard so you have to study A LOT. Doesn't help that we don't get our quizzes back to study. I like the teacher, I just don't his methods of doing things.
There are only pop quizzes and a final exam. Going to class was useless. His lectures do nothing to help you understand the material. All you can do is study the book A LOT! I'm a bio major and this class made me want to change to chem.
The class is easy, but you WILL have to read to book. His lectures are more entertaining than useful, but he manages to get the point across and tells you exactly what to study for on the quizes. There are numerous opportunities to regain points on them if you know how to argue..Also he is physically a human and biologically a gangster..
I thought he was a great teacher. Really funny - completely inappropriate and antagonistic, but hilarious. He's happy to help and lets your know what not to focus your study time on. First couple quizzes were hard, but you figure out how study and then he only counts 5 of the 8 quizzes so you get to drop your bad ones. Final Exam was a breeze.
Biol 2107 requires a lot of new vocabulary. If you do not have a strong background in Biology, invest extra time on this class and you will do fine. Dr. Brewer provides lots of guidance on what and how to study successfully to get an A. You will have to read the book, answer study questions, and do online quizes outside of class. Smart teacher.
He tries to be a funny entertaining professor and sometimes he actually manages to pull it off. I managed to get an A in the class even though I bombed the first 3 quizzes(tests). Mostly try to at least skim the textbook and actually pay attention some in class. I probably did well cause I had taken AP Bio and gotten a 4.
i tell you it is a class you cannot pass just by going to class and reading your book. i found myself on wikipidia studying for his quizes. overall, if you passionate about biology and you are looking for a teacher to chalenge you, take hime. if you just want to take bio don't take him. i made a B+ in calculus A+ in Physics A in Jazz and C+ in bio.
Good guy and a solid prof. Going to class is essential. He reviews publisher's power points (posted prior to class), but tells you what's important. Quizzes are very fair if you review ppts thoroughly. The sarcasm flows freely, but I think he's hilarious. Just be forewarned that no topic is off-limits.
Great teacher. I love his sarcastic personality, it really lightens the mood. Love the clicker question they really make the class more interesting and interactive. Overall great teacher who made biology more intereting. If you like laid back sarcastic teachers who know what they are talking about take him.
His class is not impossible and it is not hard if you are willing to put forth the time to attend class and pay attention when you are there and take good notes. Reading the book is helpful for background information, but studying the powerpoints and your own notes is essential to master his quizzes. Not hard, just requires effort.
Dr. Brewer is great! He tells you how to do well from the beginning:go to class, go to office hours, and do his study guides (ALL of them). He can be quite sarcastic but it's all in good fun. He's EXTREMELY helpful and kind in office hours.Don't be intimidated. He's a nice guy and really good at breaking material down.Study the book and powerpoints.
many quizzes, there pretty long and short answers, but as long as you do good in lab and get all your participating points, which is easy, you should still be able to do goo
he is an alright professor. I would not take him again though. His tests are hard and not consistent with everything he addresses in class. Reading the book and powerpoints is not enough and study guides are useless. He likes diagrams. I am barley passing his quizzes and studying hard. The only thing good about the class is the participation pts.
His class is really easy if you show up. He gives weekly quizzes & the only exam is the final. The quizzes are short answer but the final is multiple choice. He can be intimidating in the class room, but is really approachable during office hours. I really learn a lot during this class.
I feel like his class would've been a lot better without the sarcasm and intimidation. Quizzes were pretty hard, and inconsistent with study guides. I put in effort but there was usually something on the quizzes that was unexpected. Just be prepared for dedication and patience with this class.
Brewer is an excellent professor. He lectures traditionally, but makes an attempt to get the class more involved by using "clickers" - which are very helpful. I'll admit, he is a very intimidating individual, which I now realize and regret not speaking up more/getting to know him better. Absolutely take him though. PS- ladies, he is super handsome!
Disorganized, gives grades out really late. Dont buy the book becuase it is useless in his class. I was excited about molecular until now. I would not recommend him.
Even though he can be very sarcastic and insensitive, he a good teacher. He is very detailed throughout his lectures even though he goes of into weird tangents. He encourages interaction through clickers and question which i find to be great. he also simplifies the different biological concept. I would definitely take again. Highly recommended! ;)
Lectures were unclear, need to read the book to understand. Almost all of his quizzes are online, which makes it possible to get a good grade in the class.
He doesn't always take attendance, but he has random quizzes using iClickers, which is how he takes attendance. So, you can't ever get someone to sign you in or something. He gave us 2 in class quizzes and 3 online, and final online. The online questions were pretty difficult though. Quiz 5 is impossible. His lectures aren't that helpful reading is
He gives you the tools to earn an A in the class, but could careless whether or not you decide to use them.
Dr. Brewer is an average teacher. Most of his quizzes are online, which makes it easy to earn an A in the class. Has at least 5 quizzes (of those, only highest 4 are taken). Also rewards points for showing up & participating, and is known to crack a joke in class. He takes attendance with clicker questions. Basically, just show up and get an A!
Professor Brewer is very knowledgeable but he is rude and extremely hard to get in contact with. He is lazy and only willing to do the bare minimum when it comes to teaching. TA's grade "quizzes"(because there are no tests) and it takes WEEKS to get the grades back. Final is cumulative and has nothing to do with what was taught in the lectures.
Pros When I emailed him about a concept I did not understand, he replied in a timely manner clicker questions are very helpful funny I learn in each class. Going is never a waist of time. con The study guide questions did not help much when taking the quizzes, but they where great guides to use during chapter readings
1. When I emailed him about a concept I did not understand, he replied in a timely manner. 2. clicker questions are very helpful. 3. Funny! 4. I learn in each class. Going is never a waist of time. 5. The study guide questions did not help much when taking the quizzes, but they where great guides to use during chapter readings.
He clearly outlines what he expects. He can be humorous at times. Dont slack off because it will catch you quickly
Brewer is a great professor, he's funny at times and really does a great job of explaining complex concepts. Really knows his stuff in detail, if you want to succeed you need to sit in the first two rows and ask questions, he seems intimidating but he's there to help you. He gives enough padding to get an A too (3 online tests, easy 100's), no EC.
Dr. Brewer is an okay professor. He is not as fun/enthusiastic, and it is hard to stay focused with his monotone voice. He tries to be funny... all the PowerPoints are online. I'm a bio major, but he doesn't make me as passionate about biology as my AP Bio teacher did in high school. Doesn't answer emails. Also, LaunchPad is annoying.
This professor is the reason I am stalling on taking a bio class again because he seems to be the only lab instructor for summer. I hated him last year to a point where I withdrew from the course. He is very harsh on grading. He is sarcastic and rude when we ask a question and he very often picks on specific students. I would not recommend.
One of my favorite research instructors at GSU, he is very interesting and if you are interested in science research Dr. Brewer provides a good fundation for you.
Dr. Brewer was a pretty good professor for the most part. There were 7 quizzes (he gives no tests!) and the 2 lowest got dropped. There was a LOT of participation in the form of iClicker questions and a lot of Launchpad homework assignments. Overall, it was a pretty easy class, and he's really funny so lectures were enjoyable.
Was not the best but he's alright. He's pretty easy and likes to do things online. The study guides help you read the material and prepares you well for the quizzes. He doesn't give tests, just quizzes and he takes the 5 best scores. If you show up and do the work, you'll be fine.
He's one of the least inspiring professors I've ever had. He has an amusing sense of humor that I enjoyed, but he even admitted that he shuts off his brain while teaching and goes on autopilot. You have to purchase an expensive access code for online assignments and you have to buy your own iClicker for class participation. Doesn't believe in tests
I love Brewer!!! He explained complex bio concepts so well in this entry level class that it also helped me in my big 2107K class. It's very rare that you find teachers like him.
Prof. Brewer is very informative about the subjects he teaches, but not in an annoying way. If you have a question or didn't understand something, he will elaborate and not make you feel stupid. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS! He tests from the book but mostly from his power points, so be comfortable with them. He's really chill and funny too.
I had him last semester for bio 2106. I'm not very good at science so it was hard for me but he was a good teacher. Show up to class and do the clicker questions and homework and you will be ok. Some of the quizzes are online. I failed some of them but managed to get an A-. Overall he was pretty cool.
He's an okay professor. He knows everything but he does go off into auto pilot. He has 7 quizzes and drops 2 of the lowest. Participation is a good bit thru clickers and launchpad, however his final doesnt match up to what he teaches. Do all of the assignments and well in lab and you will be fine
Great Professor imo. The class is pretty chill and not that difficult. Just read through the chapters and study a bit and you'll be prepared for the pop quizzes. Also Make sure you do well lab ( which isn't hard at all) and do every little extra credit he offers.
Very sarcastic and extremely dismissive about student concerns. If you mess up once or twice, it will really hurt you. Doesn't answer emails and is not too good explaining concepts. Very boring and can be extremely rude. Classic I don't care about you because I have tenured attitude.
Honestly, he's way too sarcastic and nonchalant to be the head of the Biology department. You have no choice but to take him, so just be prepared to put up with his attitude. Don't skip class, he uses iclickers in some of them so REALLY don't skip class. Standard lecture teaching style. Pop quiz maniac. Actually read the chapters.
This guy is a solid teacher, definitely recommend taking him. I completely bombed the first two tests but I was still able to get a B in the class. Super chill teacher, really smart guy but isn't rude or anything. I really enjoyed his class. As long as you listen to what he says in the lectures and show up, you'll do fine.
He doesn't do pop quizzes, if you go to class he'll announce every quiz, every homework due date change, etc. Just do the homework, GO TO CLASS, and skim over the book before any quizzes and you'll get an A. He won't let you blame him for you not trying, so don't try to pull that. Just do the work and you'll be fine.
No exams, just 7 quizzes (4 online/3 in class), drops 2 lowest. He gives online hw after every lecture and it takes me 15 min to complete, also posts ppt online. Go to the lectures, pay attention, and READ the textbook. The quizzes are pretty hard, but only because there is so much info. He does Iclicker questions in class for participation grade.
He's a sarcastic and down-to-earth professor. He teaches mainly w/ slides (which mostly have images more than words), so it's important to read and take good notes on your own. No tests, only quizzes (lowest one dropped at the end). He offers a cushion on grading by having participation points and online assignments, so make sure to do those!
Brewer was an average professor and his class was definitely doable. Quizzes(sometimes online), launchpad activities, clicker questions and a final. There are launchpad activities due every week. DO NOT FORGET LAUNCHPAD BC YOUR GRADE WILL SUFFER. Missing lecture will screw you over for quizzes and he does clicker questions every class (graded).
1st, this course is set up to be hard. he does as much as he can to help, but reach out!!! you MUST read n take notes outside of class bc lectures are just pictures n he teaches on autopilot. attendance not mandatory, but does graded clicker q's. quizzes are difficult n 40-60 q's, a 36 will humble you, but they do get easier if you put the work in.
Dont let the bad reviews fool you: Dr. Brewer is a VERY caring person. Bio is a hard subject, and he tries hard to help students understand. He acknowledges hard effort more than good grades. Get ready for comprehensive questions bc just reading the textbook won't get you a 100. However, he is one of the best teachers at GSU. You wont have regrets
Dr. Brewer is a GREAT prof, you wont regret taking him. If your class is online ATTEND THE ZOOM MEETINGS!! They were fully optional, but so helpful. He outlined the class in a way that made it super easy to understand what needed to be done when. Highly recommend, one of the best profs Ive had
He is a great professor and super funny. Gives a lot of little assignments, which helps give your grade a cushion and helps getting a high grade in the class. Definitely recommend taking him you wont regret it
Dr. Brewer is such a cool and funny professor. His quizzes were not easy at all, but you learn so much in the process. Attendance on reef and HW's make up for it. I was looking forward to taking him for 2108, but he isn't teaching it in the fall, so I was kind of bummed.
Grade criteria was too confusing. Students were confused with reef app and it was not functioning well. Quizzes were hard. It took a while to understand how this class works.
My course was taught by a TA, which wasn't bad at all. The TA was very helpful. The only thing that I hated was the group work. Everything is group-related minus the weekly quizzes and lab simulations. And since everything online, so people don't show up, then you are stuck doing a major project with only 1 or 2 other people.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He is very unresponsive, selfish, and doesn't care about students concerns or personal lives. His lectures aren't engaging at all and he tends to be sarcastic when students ask genuine questions. If any other professor were available, I would've never taken Brewer. Don't let these 'good' reviews fool you.
I think Professor Brewers class was alright. We had to attend weekly zoom meeting (2 twice a week) for attendance. His quizzes were long, but with the amount of hw and quizzes given out, if you complete everything you wont fail his class. I do wish the grading scale was a little bit more straightforward. He gives you a lot of room to succeed.
Hes horrible! I only took him because he was the only bio 2107 professor . Hes so rude , I emailed him 3 times and he never responded. His quizzes are so difficult & hes not considerate at all! Im literally telling you DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! I Havent learned anything being in his class, like literally do not take him youll save yourself!!!!
I do not think Brewer is that great of a professor. He may be funny at some times but I honestly cant tolerate his sarcastic attitude. He seems to lack empathy for students. The launchpad are okay but his quizzes are hard. Luckily, some of his quizzes are online. I was able to pass them and end it with an A in the class.
He made his quizzes difficult for no reason. He asks these complicated questions but doesn't give you enough time. He went through lectures too fast, and half the stuff on the quiz came from the textbook, not him, so u have to read. I love biology & the topics of the class, but his teaching kind of ruined it for me because he isn't engaging.
Crap teacher, constantly moves around due dates for no good reason. Acts like a pick me girl and is constantly complaining. If you have the option run the other way and take another professor.
The content is kinda difficult ngl- so my advice (strongly recommend), DO THE STUGY GUIDES, GO TO OFFICE HOURS (FR GO!!), and u don't need to read the text book, the powerpoints have enough relevant info imo. study, MAKE TIME; you'll pass. Honestly can say its the only class that I have actually learned from this semester and that makes me happy.
This class is super easy!! He allows you to choose to come in person or be online, so You have to check in to class using an app. Otherwise your just doing weekly achieve assignments and tests/quizess. Which are super easy b/c he allows you to use your notes.
Dr. Brewer is great! He genuinely wants his students to learn the material. Tests are very difficult but he adds many easily completed assignments to boost grades and help you understand.
