Awesome teacher, was very clear and was always willing to go over a point again if you didn't quite get it. He's pretty funny too. Great teacher!
He is a nice person but a horrible teacher. His exams are so difficult and he doesn't curve or offer extra credit. Many people withdrew from the class.
Matt is such a hard teacher, Get out while you can.
Matt is not hard Pro. the course itself is a lil challenging only because it is a fast paste.. over all he is a good teacher .. the quiz are really easy but he takes the question off old finals for the test so they not as easy but you'll get a taste of what your gonna see on the final..
Matthew is a good math teacher. He teaches in his own method which is not bad unless you're used to learning a concept a certain way. Other than that, just attend class regularly and you'll be straight! Review A LOT of past final exams. It'll help as you go along in the class.
Was very helpful and pulled all exam questions from homework and notes. Test and quizzes were very fair and balanced. Do your homework and you will be fine.
Matthew is an excellent teacher! He was very nice, punctual, fair, and clear! In fact it may have just been the topic, but I don't remember having a professor be as clear as he was and be so willing to go over examples that thoroughly cover the material. Like with anything if you don't pay attention you will be lost, but his explanations are great.
Mr. Buckman is a very helpful, interesting teacher. Entire grade is based on the tests which are difficult if you do not prepare. However, he does tell you what' on it. If you are interested in math and not just forced to take it, I highly recommend Mr. Buckman
He is the man is the thing. He's very helpful and very clear with his notes. Take him he's the best teacher in the world.
He is one of the best teachers you can find at Wayne State. Very, helpful with his notes, and if you attend class and follow along, their should be no reason why you cant get an A
He is actually one of the best teachers. If your going to take Calc at Wayne State, take it with him! He is very clear with his notes, and no crazy curve balls on his exams.
he is ok, but his grading is very tough!!! keep away if possible
He is a great professor! Very clear and helps as much as he can! His exams and quizes are not bad but you certainly need to study! I love him!
Very straightforward. Good teacher but expects you to put in the work. He always tries to make sure everyone is on the same page.
he's a cool dude
He's really nice and willing to help. Questions are welcomed during the lecture, but you need to give him a minute to explain himself-- not all of the stuff we learned was easy to explain in order. He introduced ideas and then got into how they worked.
I went to lecture maybe 3 or 4 times, he posts lectures online. Its a pretty easy class, if I didn't understand the lesson I would either ask my lab instructor or email him. DONT BUY THE BOOK you wont need it... mistake I made literally touched it once because i felt guilty for buying it.
I had Professor Buckman for lecture and lab and he was extremely helpful one on one but was hard to understand sometimes when he was speaking to the group. He is a very nice guy and always helped me to understand the material. This class was easy and I have never been great at math.
Hes very helpful. Decent grader. YOU DO NOT NEED THE BOOK
Very nice and well spoken.
Don't buy the book, first of all. You will not use it. Other than that, Professor Buckman is a nice guy who really does care about his students. He's always more than willing to answer questions and help you out
Best math teacher I have ever had. Highly encourage people to take his class! Very descriptive notes and tells you exactly what you need to know for tests, quizzes, and final. Very clear and well spoken!
He's the biggest sweetheart and he cares about his students. he's amazing at explaining and has no surprises on quizzes or exams. I highly recommend
Easy hour lecture. Sometimes its hard to hear and he teaches things different from the teacher assistant's in lab! He's very nice and attendance isn't really required. You just need the cheap online textbook for homework!
Very Dry in his lectures. He talks too fast and is very hard to understand. Does not know how to read his student's faces to know if they are confused or not. Mumbles and stutters while lecturing and that is distracting when he does so. He is not very nice. Office hours are not helpful at all, just confuses you more.
STAY AWAY, He is horrible! Not very good when he tries to explain something, always mumbles and stutters when lecturing. Not helpful at all during office hours. Very dry lectures.
STAY AWAY. He is a very tough grader. Horrible at explaining anything. mumbles a lot and is very hard to understand. He is very nice but horrible at teaching. Office hours are practically pointless. He seems like he does not like it with students ask question.
He's okay. If you have taken calc 2 before or AP calc, you will be fine in this class. However, he teaches very poorly, and makes a lot of mistakes, so you are going to have to do problems in the book to keep up and understand the homework. He is very nice, but he does not curve, and is a tough grader. My advice: only take him if you know calc 2
This guy is the nicest teacher on Wayne State Campus. I had to retake the class and i went from a C to and A and was able to pass the final for that class.
One of the nicest instructors at WSU. Doesn't mark too hard. Assigns a lot of homework but you can get a 100% on all of them. Does talk a bit fast but is very helpful outside of class if you ask for help. Textbook is optional. Attendance is mandatory so if you come to class, it's a guaranteed 'pass', gotta work for that A+ though.
Matt was one of the most clear math teacher's I've ever had. He'd explain each step clearly, so you'd never really get lost while he was teaching. He would, however, get frazzled when you asked an open ended question. The WebAssign was harder than his exams, but representative of the final. He's sweet and helpful. Don't buy the book, just WebAssign
Don't believe everything you read on here. This guy was fantastic. Clear and easy to understand. Sure, he would get a bit confused when a question would be asked that was off topic or involved something that we were not even practicing, but who wouldn't get a bit confused? I was really hoping he would teach Calc 3 so I would be able to get him!
Awesome teacher. Best math teacher I have had at wayne state hands down. Makes information clear and lets you know exactly what you need to know for his exams making them totally fair. Final exam was only on major topics in the class meaning you didn't need to review EVERY topic over again.
One of the best professors I've had. Gives very clear notes, cares, grades nicely and sometimes funny. His tests are examples from HW and the worksheets you do in class. If you wanna ace his tests make sure you know everyone of those problems. Review problems he gives before each test not necessary but I'm sure helpful.
He is the best math teacher Ive ever had! Very happy I took his MAT1000 class. He taught very well. HIGHLY RECOMMEND 10/10
Best math professor at Wayne by far! Love him!
THIS MAN IS TERRIBLE. i wish he would care for his students and teach in a more productive way. u can barely hear him when he teaches and is incredibly boring. I fall asleep every time he teaches. I started bringing a pillow to class.
Great prof with easy-to-follow class notes. WebAssign hmwk is annoying but the questions in our notes and worksheets are the best way to study for tests. I didn't think the class was that bad, but make sure to come to class and understand how he is working through the questions. Took him for MAT2010 as well and he was very helpful & understanding.
AVOID 1) TOUGH GRADER 2) TALKS TO FAST 3) SEEMS TO HATE IT WHEN SOMEONE ASKS HIM A QUESTION
Lectures were very thorough, always really nice and willing to answer questions. Homework is all online through WebAssign . Picky grader on tests for small things so watch your "book keeping", but he will replace lowest test with your final exam grade. Calc 2 is tough but this professor makes it as easy as he can. I would take him if you can.
He is good at what he teaches. He is a math genius. He makes class fun enough with his little jokes here and there. But his tests are hard, so you have to sit and study for his exam to pass this calc class. As long as you do your part which is to study, do homework and the previous exams well, you are good. He will help you if you reach out to him!
Excellent lecturer. Make sure to attend class. Not just because he takes attendance (though he does,) but because he's just great at explaining concepts. You'll have no trouble with the content once he explains it. The class is unfortunately pretty test/quiz heavy, but just don't get behind on material (by missing class) and you'll be fine.
Great prof! Gives well-explained lectures and grades very fairly. Would recommend to other students.
Amazing professor! I highly recommend getting a class with him he teaches very well and is super organized! Calc became one of my fave classes!
Mr. Buckman was a nice guy. If you do what he recommends -- read the book before coming to class -- class is really simple. Clear grading criteria and very nice. Always available for questions.
The absolute BEST math professor I have ever had at Wayne State. You have four exams and a cumulative final which replaces your lowest exam score. He gives you review problems before each exam which are very similar to the test questions. He is soo nice and available for help. He gives you every tool to succeed, absolutely incredible and smart!
Taking calculus with this professor was the best. He gives clear lectures with clear examples. Easy to understand. I took Calculus 1 and 2 with this professor. Received A on both.
Professor Buckman is easily the best math teacher I've encountered in my college career. He'll be willing to help you if you don't understand something, and his tests and quizzes are based on things you have talked about in class and done in homework. Take him if you want to save yourself the headaches that come with the other math teachers.
Great professor and teaches his calculus very well. His lectures are probably the least boring lecture you can find in a calculus course, and if you pay attention you'll do fine.
Mr. Buckman was the one of the best teachers of my first college semester. He is a really nice guy and made the transition from high school to college easy. All of his assignments are online besides the quizzes and the weekly homework. All in all, he is a teacher I would take again.
He is such an amazing teacher! He is super funny but doesnt realize it. Hes really nice and always looking to help any students in need. Participation isnt mandatory but he does drop your lowest 2 homeworks if youre absent 0-3 times in a semester. Over all really good organized teacher. I always knew what was going on.
STAY away. He is not clear on information. His grading is tough and does not give partial credit. Exams were very tough and not covered in class.
AMAZING professor and very lenient grader. I forgot an entire important step in a problem and only lost 1 point, earning a 99 on that exam. Out of all the stats professors, he prepares you the best for the final exam. Very little homework and great at explaining the material. Super nice. Very easy class!
By far one of the best professors I've had at Wayne State. Lectures are so clear, organized, and concise that you really don't even need the text book other than for practice problems. Grades fairly on quizzes and exams and never throws at you a problem that he hasn't showed you how to solve. Truly prepares you for the final exam. Amazing teacher.
Hardest professor ever. Makes it so hard and extra. He is the toughest grader ever, barely gives partial credit and takes off more than half the points on something so little. He grades the homework like a test which is something I've never seen before. I spend more time on making it perfect for him, do not take. Very awkward guy and tough!!!!
dont take him, makes you put in effort too much. we have other classes tooo mr buckman, NOT ONLY YOURS.
I wish we cared about his students and potentially try to help them. This PROF doesn't care about anyone, only to teach the class and leave. He sucks at explaining things because he gets a little frustrated when he's wrong or if you correct him. He is a tough grader and talks so fast that I don't learn anything and have to teach myself. DO NOT TAKE
This prof has been the only math prof Ive had that truly cares about teaching math. He will take his time during lecture explaining every concept/example until the whole class understands. He never puts anything on quizzes or exams that we have not already gone over in class or on HW. My only complain is that the online HW can be a lot at times.
Lectures are very confusing; he'll do extremely simple problems for show then hits you with extremely difficult questions on the exams and quizzes. During his lectures, Buckman speeds through every problem and skips several steps thinking his students should already know the step WHEN THEY DON'T. Also gets very frustrated when asked questions.
Chill professor and will help you with questions. Hes not hard. Gives practice to make tests doable.
This professor is extremely rude and gets annoyed when you ask him questions. He only uses examples out of the textbook and does not go over questions that are related to the homework. He also speaks way to fast and makes several mistakes when doing problems in class. Do NOT recommend him as a professor.
Matt is a good professor, and provides several resources to help you prepare for tests. Seriously, you HAVE to study and keep-up with a lot of homework. If you review the materials he provides, you will be over-prepared for his tests. Its not an easy A, but it is attainable! I think he is a solid, kind professor and wants you to succeed.
If you can do his reviews you can ace the test and or quiz
pretty easy class if you just do the online homework.
Attendance is not mandatory but he will round your grade if you show up. some days are labs which are group activities and you do very short write ups for homework. Do the easy assignments, come to labs and get an easy A. Exams are easy, everything is covered in class, no surprises and he gives credit if work is shown even if aNSWER Is wrong.
Very patient with his students a great professor
Gives good, clear lectures. He answers questions thoroughly and makes sure you understand what is going on and any mistakes you may make. Gives feedback in class during example problems to make sure you are caught up. The class was overall easy because he is a great professor.
He makes sure everyone understands the concepts of his teaching. He teaches at a slow pace, you wont even have questions when he does teach because he explains so well. He does in class labs and Knewton assignments online (super easy). Quizzes are exactly how he teaches you and so are his exams. Super easy class.
Made the class very clear and easy, do the homework and pay attention in class, very straightforward. He even prints out the lecture notes so that you don't waste your time writing in class.
He is such an amazing teacher! I had him for math 1000 and he was very nice and respectful! There was a lot of group work (labs) I went to his office hours, he was super nice never cut me off! 10/10 I would take him again for my next math classes!
Best math professor at WSU. YES there is a-lot of hw for MAT 1050, but it's not his choice, the mathematics coordinator controls everything. Short quizzes every week and exams. He gives study guides for BOTH exams & quizzes with answers that are identical to the actual exams and quizzes, but different numbers of course. DEFF WILL TAKE AGAIN
Best math teacher I've ever had! He does a really good job of making sure everyone understands the content. A good amount of WebAssign homework but it's worth your time. Highly recommend taking his class.
He is very detail oriented in his lectures and it is clear what you have to do. I remember having a lot of homework and group work though.
Great guy and lots of resources and was very willing to answer questions and explain anything you needed! Told you exactly what to expect on exams and quizzes as well as homework confusion.
He's nice but he assigns WAY too much homework. Be ready for a lot of late nights.
He is the absolute BEST! His class is very easy!! He is a very helpful & caring professor. He offers help throughout the week and has so many useful tools on canvas. He explains everything and makes sure you understand it. Buckman is very respectful too. I highly recommend him!
He is the best professor.
Uses an online program called Hawkes learning. I never actually attended class just used this program to do the minimal amount of work. The program is well thought out. The professor was always available to struggling students and tried to get students more involved with him. Took me about 4hrs of work a week for this class, if that.
Im not a math person, but he made me enjoy what I was doing. He does a good job explaining and will also tell you what you need to review for exams. I recommend you take him if you have the chance! Theres hand in homework, online homework, quizzes, and exams.
Buckman is a great teacher. He knows the course content and teaches it well. He assigned one hand in hw per week that was due the following monday. His quizzes were fair and relatively similar to things we have done in class( not tricky) 4 exams that were like 5 questions and a final. He does a great job of explaining and preparing you for tests
He is a great professor and answers any questions you may have. He spends a lot of time clearing up any confusion and makes sure you understand the material. He assigns one hand in homework due monday, webassign due wednesday and sunday, and quizzes or exams are on friday. He also posts video lectures that you can watch for a better understanding.
Hes so sweet and he gives you so many resources to learn from. Hes a great teacher
Professor Buckman is an absolute gem! Teaches with great pace and is able to evaluate the class' understanding of concepts.
This class was taught in a hybrid format, meaning our lecture could be done either in the in person classroom or on zoom, but i watched most lectures after(they were recorded). Buckman is great during his lectures, and the test problems are strait-forward and not complicated. His homework on webassign is the hardest part, with harder complicated ?s
I made an account solely to praise this man. Amazing lecturer and they are recorded. Exams are just easier versions of the review packets. Homework isn't too bad because Webassign has videos and practice problems to explain the trickier ones and you get unlimited attempts for each problem. No excuse not to get an A.
Professor Buckman is absolutely awesome! I took him for Calc 1 and found that he was the most clear and understanding teacher I had had in a long time. His tests and grading methods are very fair. He is really good at explaining the concepts and truly wants all of his students to succeed. Would definitely take another class with him.
Professor Buckman's class was amazing. Attendance was not mandatory and he was very accommodating to students who could not make it to class. There is some homework but it is only a review of the topics that we covered in class so it was very easy. The tests covered the homework topics. Very easy to pass the class if you practice and Do the work.
Taking him is such a blessing. He will help you when you need to be supported and give you many resources to succeed. As long as you show up and follow along, there is no reason for you not to get an A.
Hosted lectures in-person and through zoom, which was really convenient, and the lectures are review of the textbook on Hawkes Learning. Hes always more than happy to answer questions that students had, and is very concise on homework & exam material! Contains lots of homework on Hawkes, but has very lenient grading criteria.
Had an A till the final, great professor up until the final where he will screw over half the class. It's not worth it, take him if you HAVE to but if you have the option, do calculus at a different school ie. community college or something.
i loved stats bc of him!! he made it super understandable and i really had no hard time learning from him. the homework was easy and the tests were the same format as the homework
Loved him. His exams are very fair and his lectures are clear, concise, and easy to understand. People rating him poorly due to the Final are being ridiculous. Professor Buckman does not make the final for calc 1. The WSU mathematics department does. The final was rough, but that wasn't his fault. He didn't write it, nor knew what would be on it.
He was a great professor. He made the content easily digestible. He is a fair grader and genuinely cares about his students. I highly recommend professor buckman.
Best math professor
Very nice and respectful professor, although he teaches faster than the speed of light. Taught myself half the material because of that. Tests can be hard but the final should be illegal. If you don't want to cry everyday of the semester, do yourself a favor and take at a diff school.
Mr.Buckman is a nice and respectful person. lot of homework and its graded tough
Best Math Instructor EVER!! TAKE HIM!
Online homework is due nearly every day. Impossible to keep up with. Hand in homework due every Monday. Insane amount of quizzes, two quizzes then a test. ( week 1 quiz, week 2 quiz, week 3 test, week 4 quiz), and this cycle repeats every Friday. He talks super fast during lectures and does a lot of mental stuff rather than explaining.
Buckman was amazing! My favorite class this semester. We received between 3-5 homework assignments per week. Hand in homework due Tuesday, online Hawkes homework due Tuesday and Fridays. Classes meet twice a week, notes and lecture is very clear and deliberate. Free environment to ask questions, even had me questioning making statistics my minor.
Professor Buckman is literally the best stats professor. Sure there were a good amount of homework and work due every week but it truly helps for your exams. If you do the homework and go over lecture notes you will be fine. He is also always willing to answer any questions and help. Would definitely take again!!!
I loveddddd this mans way of teaching. He is so clear in lecture that u never feel lost and overwhelmed. Although the homework was heavy, it really helped you in preparing for the weekly quizzes that u had every Friday. He is very generous in points for quizzes and tests. He always took the time to explain any concepts that someone didnt understand
He is nice and easygoing. His lectures are easy to understand and helpful. Assignments every week and quizzes every other week (2-3 questions at most). Quiz questions are alike to the final exam. Would take his class again!
I really liked Professor Buckman. He graded very fair and almost would over explain topics so they were easy to understand. Always made sure his students knew what to do. Also pretty funny as well.
Makes calculus easy. No surprises on tests or anything like that. If you attend lecture you should do well in the class
Very easy class, explains things very well and gives a few homeworks weekly. Attend classes, do the homework and ask questions and the class should be fine.
Amazingggg professor, his explanations were always clear and easy to understand. He always gave study guides that were super helpful for quizzes/test. If you are taking calc 2 take it with him!!!!
Best math professor I've had throughout my college career, even after taking higher levels of math. Plenty of in-class practice/examples during note taking and his lectures were very easy to understand. Exams were usually similar to the notes and were easy as long as you did some practice problems and the HW.
This class is extremely easy. All you have to do is pay some attention in class and do most of the homework to pass. The lowest grade I received in his class was 80% on a worksheet I didn't understand. He grades mostly for showing your work, not getting the right answer (on homework and quizzes). He is very easy to reach outside of class.
He's undoubtedly one of the best teachers I've had in my life. I will admit he does assign quite a hefty amount of homework, but it 100% prepares you for the tests. His lectures are very informative, and you truly learn through his explanations and attention to detail. He is very thoughtful and provides partial credit as long as you show work.
He was a great professor, I usually am not that good with math but he went at a reasonable pace and I was able to learn quickly. He is very organized when it comes to assignments and hands out graded assignments and quizzes the next class period.
Prof. Buckman organized his class very well. He's very simple and somewhat rigid to the traditional teaching stereotype but that didn't make the class bad. He encourages participation in his lectures, greatly appreciates and emphasizes punctuality to his class, and beware- do not leave your ringers on in his class. One of the best stats profs.
Great semester, great teacher. Thank you Professor Buckman
He explained the material soooo simply. We didn't have to buy the textbook from what I remember and going to lecture was optional because he recorded all his lectures. Great professor. I wish he taught all my classes 😭❤️
Amazing professor. They're rare in this university so if you see his name immediately sign up and dont lose your chance. Often textbooks can sound like gibberish but if you attend class his explanations let you understand it the first time. VERY lenient homework grader, will give you points just for effort. Overall amazing! He makes everything easy
He is such a nice and great teacher. He explains the topics very well and thoroughly. Usually, about 1-2 homework assignments are assigned every day after class, but they are just like the examples done in class. I would take his class again.
This is class Mathew treat it as such, this is not a show for you. This a course for students to learn math. Take this seriously please we are paying to be here
Professor Buckman is an amazing math instructor. His lectures are clear and engaging, and the in-class practice is super helpful. Use the free textbook, do the homework, and try Unstuck AI for study prep - you'll do great in this class.
he is ok, but his grading is very tough keep away if possible
Buckman's review used to be close to 5 stars until recently. I think what happened was a student got mad at their grade and made multiple fake accounts to review him badly. I mean it's kind of obvious... Anyway, Buckman is a great professor. Fast grading, helpful lectures, and he doesn't try to trick you on quizzes or tests. 10/10.
Mr. Buckman has been a great MAT 2030 teacher so far. I enjoy his lectures and I think some independent reading of the textbook really compliments them. His quizzes are straightforward too. Side note, the two most recent negative reviews look like they've been written by the same person who's upset for whatever reason.
I love Buckman. if you want to learn, he will teach you everything in great detail and will confirm everything very logically. he explains everything very clearly. there are quizzes every week but as long as you work in class you should have no problem completing these without even studying. I would recommend Buckman to everyone taking a math class
Excellent Professor. He's extremely organized, is very clear in his lectures, and really wants to see you succeed. Takes time to answer questions thoroughly
great professor, cant think of anything to complain about him really. just attend class, take notes, leave. that's all. and do the homework and you're set for calc 1
grade consists of quizzes and exams only but don't let that scare you. the quizzes and exams are simple and straightforward, as long as you did homework and went over lecture notes, you'll be able to do great. he's very clear when teaching and adds some humor to lectures. he goes a little bit fast, but always stops to see if anyone has questions.
Do the homework and review your notes, and you will have a guaranteed A. His tests and quizzes are super similar to the problems we do in class.
Absolutely heaven-sent. He is a saint, treat him well.
Professor Buckman is probably the best professor that you can take to teach Calc 3. Attendance is not mandatory for lecture and you have weekly quizzes (2 questions) and 3 exams + Final with partial credit. Really thorough explanations on topics. Very friendly and will try his best to connect with his students. Highly recommend taking him
Highly recommend! He thoroughly explains concepts, makes everything clear, and answers all questions patiently. Don't let bad reviews fool you—he's a great prof. Material is tough, but his teaching makes it doable. Homework isn't required but helps. Pay attention, review lecture notes, and you'll succeed like I did. Good luck!
Buckman is probably the best professor I have ever had ever. He made calc 3 seem so easy, and I feel like I learned a lot too. His lectures are great and he is a very genuine and understanding teacher. Even though you don't have to attend lectures, I definitely recommend doing so, because that's how much value I ended up getting out of them
Best Professor at Wayne State and best professor ever, Teaches complex topics like its basic algebra. Take him without a doubt.
So glad I had this teacher for calc 1. Explains everything very well. Exams/quizzes are literally almost exactly like or easier than ones we do in class or for homework. VERY lenient on moving homework due dates around as well. Highly recommend.
Best professor I had
Highly recommend him for Calc 3 or any other fundamental math class. He is understanding and makes complex concepts easy to grasp and understand.
genuinely such a good guy and professor, but the amount of info he throws at you on top of all the homework had me thinking i was going insane.
Traditional teaching style, charismatic, you can tell he cares deeply about the subject he teaches. The best professor I had at Wayne, and one of the best Math instructors overall in my personal experience.
He's literally the goat. I don't know what else to say. His teaching style was amazing for me and his quizzes and tests are just like the homework. Just stay engaged during his lectures and take good notes, that's all I did and I got a 99 in the class. Do all the homework and go to class, it'll be worth it.
