Amazing professor. Lots of reading, but the assignments are straight to the point. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you don't show up he won't count your homework even if you submit it on time that day. Would highly recommend this class and professor to anyone I meet. Very straight to the point, and easy to get help.

There is tons of reading for this class however none of it is just to give assignments. He takes the time to discuss the readings and ties them into other aspects of the class and real life circumstances. This is definitely a class that needs to be planned ahead for as the grading is very strict and relates to attendance, but it is worth it.

I would suggest taking this class if you constantly show up to class and NEVER miss. There are papers that are graded every class period and if you do not go to class, he does not grade your paper. The papers are really helpful because they prepare you exactly for the final exam, so that was really nice. Overall, the class is focused on discussion.

I took him for POLS 463 and I love him the class was well structure and learned a lot. He is a very structured teacher so if that is something that you do not like then this class maybe is not for you. But overall he was great and would take another class with him and recommend him to someone.

Professor Buehler is one of the best professors I've had! His lectures are mostly discussion based, and he assigns a lot of reading and writing. Don't let that scare you though. As long as you are willing to do the work, you will succeed. This was a very fun class, and I learned a lot.

This class taught me so much about how to read academic literature and get the most out of it. Dr. Buehler's Special Topics in the Nuclear Politics of the Middle East is the most interesting and engaging class I have taken at UT. He is a fan of the socratic method so you are expected to do the reading each class period, but as long as you just try to read you will be completely fine. 10/10 recommend!!!!

Dr. Buehler's POLS410 was hands-down one of my favorite courses. While the class calls for weekly readings paired with a one-page written response, his discussions were extremely interesting and he made room for engaging activities. He is also incredibly responsive. I really hope I get to take one of his classes again! 10/10

I took professor buehler in my last semester of undergrad. I can genuinely say that this was the class where I obtained the most knowledge throughout the entirety of my undergrad experience. It was a tough course, but Professor Buehler makes it very interesting and helps to make the class as engaging as possible. I highly recommend.

Assigns more reading than is necessary to answer the fundamental questions of the course, but I guess he wants to teach you how to skim. We studied interesting topics but the class definitely has a tangible western political bias. Dr. Buehler will help you pass if you show up and try.

POLS 595 - Nuclear Politics in the Middle East While there is quite a bit of reading, it is very interesting and pertinent material, so it is not an issue at all. Dr. Buehler provides a good class environment to not only understand the material but also apply that knowledge. He also provides good feedback on essays and is a very reasonable grader.

This class is extremely useful. There are many educated discussions. Dr. Buehler always brings up good points. You learn something new every class.

If you stay on top of the work, this class is very easy and you will receive good grades. However, if you don't do the readings, you will be lost and he will know it, so you'll get a bad grade. He's a great professor, explains everything, and responds to emails within a day.

Review for POLS 249. Great professor. Very manageable course load if completed when assigned. Class revolves around reading and writing but the writing is very short weekly "papers." Material is interesting and actually very informative of how other countries operate politically. Put in the work and you will get an A.

This class was a very good lecture class. He was very diverse in his reading he assigned and they all connected at the end of the course. Each week you will have a summary paper and video to submit, which arent hard to do. Basically just read the assigned readings and you will pass with a very good grade.

One of my favorite classes. Wasn't given many assignments but I learned a lot. The reading load was hefty at times but texts were always relevant, interesting, & purposeful. I took his Middle Eastern Film class, in which we watched various manifestations of Islamic culture and subsequently discussed them in class. He is very passionate about Islam and the surrounding topics, so it easily made everyone else excited about it. This is a breezy class.

He is a great professor and really helps his students learn about the different concepts about exploring the Middle East and Islam. This 1 credit course is all about watching movies individually and coming to class to discuss what we watched.

Considering COVID, I was glad to only attend one day a week in person. My other two classes were zoomed recently. He responds readily to questions and comments and has great background knowledge to keep things interesting.

This class is pass/fail, and it's pretty chill. I've actually taken it twice, once for World Politics Through Film and once for The Middle East and Islam through film. It's really casual, sort of more like a club than a proper course. It's a good class to take if you want to have one hour a week where you can relax and just kind of talk.

I enjoyed Professor Buehler's World Politics in Film class a lot. We only had to watch one movie a week and there's no extra homework. We just had to discuss the movie in class and we would have a super easy quiz with one question that you can answer as long as you've watched the movie.

Professor Buehler teaching FYS 129 is really low maintenance. I highly recommend taking either Middle Eastern Politics through Film or World Politics through Film if you're interested in politics, film, or just need an extra credit hour to bump you up. He grades super easy and all you have to do is participate in discussion.

This is the second class I have taken with Dr. Buehler. He is organized, well-prepared, clear with discussion/questions and communication reminders. He has alerted class members to other online and campus activities/lectures that will enhance our learning.

The course consists of watching a 2 hour movie each week and then answering one question for proof that you watched the movie. You must participate in discussion each week.

Professor Buehler was a great professor and provided interesting readings every week. However, some weeks the readings seemed too long for our assignments. At points, there were near 100 pages of readings for a 300-word assignment. But, I would still recommend the course, especially if you are interested in the MENA region.

This is one of the more interesting online asynchronous classes I've taken. There's no textbook required, we have weekly readings that are uploaded to Canvas. Sometimes they're pretty lengthy but I've found that printing them out and highlighting + taking notes really helps for the SPs. Not homework heavy and professor answers emails quickly.

Honestly the best professor I have had, not to say the others were not good. He is super knowledgeable and wants to share his understanding in a very digestible manner. This class was online, asynchronous. Prof Buehler did great organizing the class. This class was so fun to take. You are always learning new things and Mr. Buehler does a great job of explaining everything. I had Professor B for FYS and it was a great class and really helpful. He was very welcoming and made you feel like you had someone at school to talk to.

Professor Buehler gives great feedback throughout the semester, and helps you to succeed if you take advice from the feedback. Course content was very exciting and I loved learning about the Middle East. So glad that I took this class!

This was a winter mini-term course and the workload wasn't too much at all! I learned a lot, and I never felt overwhelmed. Dr. Buehler gives a video lecture for each module where he summarizes the main points from the readings, which helps when you write about them for the main assignments.

He gives great feedback and grades assignments in a very timely manner so you're never left in the dark about what your grade is. I took Matt Buehler course for the winter mini-term this past January. With this course taking place online I was able to stay at home longer over the winter break. The writing assignments are not hard at all and Professor Buehler give you a lot of feed back so you can do better on the next assignment.

This class was not hard at all. If you watched the films you would know everything for the quiz and then the rest of class was a discussion about it.

He was a great professor and really enriched class material through discussion.

Super chill and this class was very easy you had to watch a movie once a week on your own time then in class, you'd have a participation quiz which was so easy and then a discussion about the movie.

This class was only a one hour class, and he treated it as such. There was hardly a workload except for the final paper, but we had the whole semester to work on it. He is always prepared for discussion. It was a relatively enjoyable class.

UNHO101 was really enjoyable and interesting. The workload was not difficult as long as you watch the movies and complete the final project. I would definitely recommend taking this class!

This was for an online may-mester. Start of the class he clearly stated what the assignments were and how to do them and when they were due. 6 300-500 short papers and 3 video summaries.

The class was very interesting topic. It is something that I've been interested in for awhile, and because the Professor lived there he was able to give personal experiences in the lectures. The class has a lot of reading for a may mester. If you have a free time during then I recommend. If you do not, then I would say take it over a full semester

I took POLS463 online for the Summer Mini Term and the syllabus made the assignments easier to work through. We had Summary Papers of readings and Professor Buehler told us which parts of the readings to focus most on while grading our assignments and providing feedback promptly. Would take again!

It is a lot of reading but he publishes lectures and highlights what to pay attention to in the reading. He gives good feedback on assignments if you submit them in a timely manner. The due dates are very flexible. Great professor!

This class has a very reasonable workload, and it's work that isn't tremendously tedious. All of the readings, videos, and documentaries worked together perfectly to truly enhance our understanding of the regions we were learning about! He's not a super tough grader either as long as he can tell you are doing the work.

I took Professor Buehler for a summer course, and it was the most flexible I've ever seen regarding assignment dates. He was very clear at the beginning of the semester when the due dates were, and it was up to the student to plan their appropriate timeline. This class was taught exactly like how an online class should be. Prof B provided valuable resources to help us with the workload, and gave us the flexibility to get work done on our own time while also reminding us of due dates and not being overly pestering about it.

The course material for my class was pretty interesting and certainly very dense (as a freshman, interpreting the material has been the most difficult reading I've ever had assigned). The assignments themselves feel very fairly outlined and easy to follow though, which let me have an enjoyable time going through the coursework.

I took his winter mini-term class and I was very pleased with him and the class. All the work is laid out in front of you from the jump, and although the time is not plenty the articles are NOT SMALL. The short paper questions are pretty straightforward which is a big positive. I was happy the class wasn't as hard as other mini-term classes.

I had him for an Asynchronous class, there was a lot of work but he gave us clear suggested deadlines and was always quick to provide feedback. Our section of UNHO 101 was on global politics in film. It was obvious that he knew a lot about the topics that were in the movies we watched. He is very passionate about politics which made class interesting. The class was very relaxed and not hard at all outside of an essay assignment.

Professor Buehler is a good professor and very accessible outside of class. He wants to make this an easy A if you show up and have watched the assigned movie. Solid 50/50 on the movies being good. Only actual assignment is a paper he tells you about the first week of class that you have almost the entire semester to complete. Would take again!

Dr. Buehler's class was fun, laid back, and focused on group discussion. He was always very quick to answer any emails/ questions, and he genuinely wants everyone to do well. He is very passionate about the topics discussed in class which keeps the class very interesting and engaging.

We would watch a movie once a week before each class and discuss in class with a one question quiz (super easy if you watch it). POLS 463 with Prof Buehler was my favorite class at UTK. This class was during the summer mini-term but I wish it was a full semester. Buehler gives great feedback on your writing assignments - be sure to read the books & watch his lectures as it will make the writing assignments easier (and you learn so much!!)

I took this class for the summer mini-term. There was A LOT of reading and that was the main way to learn the content. There were few things to be graded by, but he grades relatively fairly and gives good feedback. He is very knowledgeable about the class and seems to enjoy teaching it.

Dr. Buehler's online classes are phenomenal. His lectures are interesting and well-organized. He is very concise and articulate on the subjects. These lecture videos do NOT waste time and he explains the core arguments of the readings to help you process them. POLS articles can be dense but his lectures make them easier. Professor Buehler is a very quick grader and responds to emails quickly as well. He has students read a lot of material but will some times highlight the key points so it is not that bad.

Very effective in lectures, is very good at getting across important information but still keeping discussion interesting and fast paced. All lectures also had visual aids which were helpful in clarifying important information. When submitting essays we received grades sometimes within hours of our submission and always had very clear feedback.

Watch one film a week, 1Q quiz that covers a major event of the movie (just to prove you watched it), group discussion about that stories given country and problem. You'll come to learn some really interesting cultural differences throughout this course, and Dr. Buehler could not be more chill. One 5 page paper and that's it. Take the course!

Professor Buehler is a wonderful professor. You can tell that he cares a lot about the subject and he brings a lot of personal experience to the classroom as well. You have a lot of room to design your own schedule in this course since the assignments aren't technically due until the last day of the semester. His feedback is also very helpful!

It is in your best interest to at least start writing one paper a week starting 3-4 weeks into the semester. There are a total of 15 papers and 3 video assignments due.

Asynchronous class and he lets you complete the whole course on your own time. There are weekly writing assignments, and you can either do them by the suggested due dates or you can complete them by the end of the semester. I highly suggest completing the work by the suggested due dates or you will be swamped at the end of the semester.

Dr. Buehler was an amazing teacher during my online course. He was always prompt in his response any time I tried to get in touch with him, and his grading for assignments is fair and consistent. As long as you follow the rubric you'll get an A in the class.

For this class, you have to read scholarly articles every week and then write a 300-word summary answering the question for the week. Although the work is time-consuming, the assignments are purposeful and not difficult. Dr. Buehler is extremely passionate about this class, and you can tell he just wants his students to succeed.

I got out a lot of learning about Middle Eastern/North African politics, so I definitely do not regret taking this course. Dr. Buehler is obviously in love with what he teaches and it's contagious. I took the Winter Mini-Term version of POLS 463. I 100% recommend both this class and Dr. Buehler to any student out there. Dr. Buehler's structured material and positive feedback make staying on top of things easy. The only "textbook" you need is one of 2 novels.

Professor Buehler is very organized and detailed in his instructions, which I appreciated during my asynchronous course. The modules were easy to follow and he frequently sent out relevant accouterments that answered my questions. He provided helpful feedback and I appreciated his lectures as they were concise and easy to understand.

This class was difficult due to the amount of reading in such a short period of time, however, professor Buehler explains the material very clearly in his video lectures, and it helped me understand the course much better as a person who has never taken a political science course.

This was an 11-day long winter course with no meetings. All assignments were due on the 11th day. I think Professor Buehler laid out a completely fair workload for that amount of time and made the subject matter as interesting and impactful as possible given the limited timeframe of the course.

Professor Buehler is a great professor, and is very knowledgable about the information in the course. There is a lot of reading in the course so be sure to you give yourself enough time to read the assigned documents thoroughly as some can be a little difficult. Overall the class was good, and I would take it again.

This review is for POLS 371-Terrorism and Political Violence. The course was online with a total of 15 policy briefs. No quizzes/exams/projects. He gives SO MUCH feedback on the briefs so you know how to improve. Reading heavy but a lot of extra credit!

He cares a lot about setting up his students to be successful. His memos were all due at the end of the semester, which let you work on them on your own pace. He grades fairly and offers lots of extra credit. Don't take this class if you're not great with reading heavy courses or struggle to be disciplined in asynchronous classes.

Dr. Buehler wants you to get a good grade. The readings are all great and you will need to use them to answer the weekly homework memos. He grades fast and gives feedback as you submit your assignments, so you can apply his comments to future assignments. Overall I enjoyed the class and the content was really captivating.

Do not take POLS 371 if you do not like to read a lot. For the course, you only have to submit 15 Policy Briefs and they are all due on the last day of class but there are soft deadlines that he recommends and I HIGHLY recommend utilizing the soft deadlines because the briefs themselves can take about 2-3 hours total to read and write.

Professor Buehler class was good and easy he has a very clear rubric for the online papers. No tests or quizzes. The readings some weeks were long but as long as you spend maybe an hour or two a week on the class you wont have a problem.

This professor is excellent at communicating and grading within a timely manner and grading in a timely manner. Oftentimes he graded my papers within hours. His lectures were informative and helpful in completing the assignments. I would recommend this professor and would take another one of his classes. He was exceptional.

I really enjoyed the lectures. They were well spoken and detailed. If you are having troubles with his assignments in POLS371 WATCH LECTURES. I almost learned that the hard way. One thing I disliked is the ABSURDLY LOW word count for PB's. He is very lenient with it however but changing the word count on the syllabus would be better.

Professor Buehler is extremely knowledgable on the course material he teaches and I was able to learn so much in this class. The entire class is graded on 15 policy brief essays due at the end. One downside is the word count is extremely difficult to abide by considering the amount of supplemental readings and videos required for the briefs.

Took this 15-day Maymester class online and was nervous at first, but now on the other side it was straightforward and easy, especially for 3 credits. There's a GOOD amount of reading and videos daily, but it's doable—even while I was traveling. I learned and retained more than in some semester classes. Read info and write a 500 word response.

For a class on terrorism in the Middle East, he is very careful about trying to remain unbiased and provides different perspectives. He gives useful feedback on papers, and he loves what he does. Professor Buehler is very passionate on what he teaches which makes for a good professor that actually teaches. Has lectures, provides clear instructions, fast and helpful replies. I took his online terrorism and violence class, although, reading heavy it is very interesting and I definently recommend.

He was a very knowledgable professor and the lectures posted were helpful and short. The readings, while definitely long, were also really supplemental to my understanding of the material. He is a generous grader who gives great feedback. The only assignments we had in the course were Policy Briefs, and they were easy to complete if you read.

Took this class as a mini term, so a lot of readings in a short period, but the readings were worth doing. Prof. Buehler organizes the online class well and provides quick, detailed feedback on all assignments, would take again!

Professor Buehler is a highly knowledgable professor who genuinely cares about the success of his students. This course was taken as a mini-term, so there was a lot of material to consume in a short period of time. However, prof Buehler provided clear grading criteria, graded in a timely manner, and provided constructive feedback. Highly recommend

Dr. Buehler is rated as well as he is for a reason. He is super knowledgeable, well spoken, and easy to follow. The class is graded on 8 short papers and 3 short video assignments that are all super easy and manageable. I wish he taught more classes in person!

Great professor that got stuck with an incredibly boring class and curriculum, but take him if able!
