Mr. Cervantes is by far the worst teacher I have ever had the unfortunate chance to deal with. When asked, he told us that he didn't even want to be a teacher. His class average on the first test was a 41 so he kindly curved it by 5 points. He mumbles his entire lecture and only uses variables to work every problem which makes it even worse. Awful.
Just to start, I thought this guy was hilarious, reminded me of Jimmy Fallon. For me, any type of math or science lecture is boring af. But with Cervantes at least it was interesting.
He has great intelligence; may not get the point across. You need to follow his advice of practice problems outside of class. Tests are hard but graded easily. In order to pass the tests show him you understand and he will give you all the points for the problem. Always get the easy points bc the few tests you have are HARD. study a week early
Mumbled every single time he lectured. He has the worst handwriting in the world. Uses terrible visuals and doesn't explain any of his examples very well. He does not write the test until the morning of test day so he can never tell you anything about it. Hardest class I've ever had to teach to myself.
STUDY PRACTICE PROBLEMS, especially the examples he gives during lectures. Also, read the book for more clarity, he has to go fast to get through all of the material. It's a difficult course, but he tries to ease the pain as much as possible. He curves tests, gives credit for just turning in labs and quizzes, and genuinely wants you to pass.
definitely the worst class I ever took. He mumbled the entire time, his lectures are not clear at all. You have to study on your own to pass. Didn't make the class interesting at all. He doesn't send out notes, so we have to take notes and listen to his explanation at the same time which is hard. Doesn't explain well or clearly.
I need more characters than 350 to describe this class. Basically DONT TAKE. He is horrible cant understand him or his writing. Took him during the summer. Very fast pace. Told us it was our fault that he could not grade our test and give them back on time. He doesnt teach the book way he teaches out of his head. Never made myself sick over a class
Does not explain lectures thoroughly. All he does is prove the formulas from the book and repeat some of the examples. His lectures are very boring and does not know how to do the labs. Tests are tough with a few multiple choice and more workout problems.
He explained the lecture, how to derive the formulas, answer the questions if you have any. University Physics is not a easy class after all, unless some teachers purposely make it easy, but I think he wants you to learn something.
University Physics is a hard class, anywhere you take it. Matt was a great professor. He knows his stuff. Yeah they class was EXTREMELY hard, and you have to work for your grade, but he's super helpful outside of class. DO THE HOMEWORK. Do the homework multiple times until you understand it. You need spend 2 hours a day studying to do well.
This is a difficult course wherever you take it, but Matt knows his stuff and is super helpful outside of class. His class is EXTREMELY difficult, so you muse work hard for your grade. DO THE HOMEWORK. Do it until you understand it(5 times or so) You will need to spend 2+ hours a day to do well in this class. This is not a blow-off class.
Great physics professor. He really knows what he is talking about and sometimes may spend too much time on the theory but it is so that his students understand why they are able to use certain equations. His tests sometimes have questions from the book so do the recommended homework. Gives lots of partial credit on exams so show all of your work.
Physics isn't a blow off class. You actually have to study and do the homework. Expect about two hours of studying per day if you want a good grade. Dr. Cervantes was a great professor who was always willing to help outside of class. The tests are very hard, but after the first one you know what to expect.
Hands down, hardest professor/class I've ever had. He took a class that wasn't really very difficult and made it a nightmare. Highest test grade I got was a 63. Your life during this class will be: Study, go to class, study, sleep, and repeat.
I liked him. I always dreaded going into the tests because of the vasts amount of information I thought I would need to know, but as long as you know the basic techniques you can begin to solve almost any problem of his. He his always available and enjoys helping out. If I had to do it all over again, I would still take him.
Matt is a great guy. I took 2425 over the summer in 4 weeks and it was a ton of work really quick but somehow Matt made it really manageable. He was down to earth and personable and I liked that about him. He covered pretty much everything we needed to know in lecture and he curved the tests pretty dang well
Ok, any of these good ratings are written by the prof. He arrives 15 minutes late class. My whole class failed the first test and didn't even pass with the curve. Literally I study all the time. Had to use outside tutoring. I have A's in all my other classes. And I am taking science and Math. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
If you want to PASS this class with this professor: 1. Taken previous PHYSICS 1401 class and have a good understanding of physics 2. Do all online Homework and in class labs 3. Read and Reread Textbook Chapters 4. Keep notes from lecture and textbook 5. Have a Tutor and old tests from previous years 6. BE ABLE TO TEACH YOURSELF AND STUDY GOODLUCK!
1)He gets annoyed when you ask questions about the lecture. 2)The tests are nothing like the homework or the extra practice problems. 3)He makes you feel dumb when you don't understand something. 4)Lecture is basically proofs of textbook examples using only the formulas. 5)At times he can be pretty rude. 6) Read the book and try to teach yourself.
worst teacher I've eve had. "everything is fair game on a test" even though he provides no review. tests are much harder than anything he goes over in lecture. he gets frustrated when you tell him you don't understand. class started with 30 people and after the second test only 8 people are still in it if thats any indication of the prof he is.
Physics 1401 is a very difficult class no matter where you take it or who you have. Cervantes is not an easy professor and you have to put in work to pass this class. He is reasonable and will help you if you need it. Show up to class, take notes and put in the work outside of class and you will do fine.
Mr. Cervantes lectures just takes some time getting use to. He likes gives points back on test which everyone could use. Don't think you going to pass this class if your not going to put in the work.
Matt is by far the worst prof that I've ever had. He doesn't care about his students at all and for the second test, the class average was somewhere in the 40's and he didn't curve it at all. When you ask him questions in class, most times, he doesn't answer your question and his handwriting in pretty awful as well. Try to avoid him at all costs.
Professor Cervantes is an interesting one. He isn't a very good teacher and it is quite challenging to learn from him. He gives no reviews for the tests and the tests are quite challenging as well. On the other hand, if you get to know him on a personal level, he's a nice guy and wants to help you succeed. You just have to be the one to reach out.
Great professor. He enjoys the subject and describes the origin of concepts. Sometimes he may go on tangents but what he has to say is interesting!
Best physics professor I ever had. Passionate about the subject and derives every formula which helps to solve problems in a course like University Physics I. He is quite lenient too, provided 10 point curve for every single program. So rich gets richer...
Good luck in his class if you didn't take AP Physics C in high school or don't have any previous experience in college level physics. I personally didn't struggle thanks to my AP physics classes in high school but I saw suffering in the eyes of everybody around me. He teaches too fast and tests are way harder than anything he goes over in class.
This Prof is by far the worst. The class average on the first test was a 40% & he doesn't curve. He thinks that physics is basic knowledge, & doesn't know why you don't understand. Only 2 ppl in my class have an A and they took 3+ years of phys prior, over 50% of my class has dropped. He purposely makes the tests impossible. AVIOD AT ALL COST!
Cervantes is a nice guy once you get to know him over the semester, but he is not the best teacher. Most of it is the fact that the course is hard, pay attention in class, study notes and problems from the textbook and you should be able to pass
Caring, friendly professor, just not a very good one. Consistently late, rambles, extremely disorganized lectures. Buy and read the textbook, or avoid Cervantes, or fail miserably. Very fair grader on exams, and will often do a few examples that show up on the exams. If you are able to teach yourself the material, you'll fair well.
Dr. Cervantes knows what he's doing, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a more competent intellect at Blinn. That being said, he goes quickly and his lectures can be confusing if you don't familiarize yourself with core concepts ahead of time. He teaches much more effectively when students actively engage him. Just don't get him started on bitcoin.
Definitely the hardest class Ive ever taken, but Matt is one of the smartest professors Ive ever had. He definitely knows his stuff. Although his class is hard, he really does care about your progress in the class. If youre struggling (which you will) just go talk to him. It helps. Lastly, just bring up bit coin. Thanks Matt! ;)
Cervantes is a nice guy! He's very fair in partial credit, and is willing to help. His teaching style is not for everyone, but he doesn't deserve all the bad reviews. If you're taking a summer class, I recommend getting a tutor if you have no previous knowledge of the subject. I took physics two years ago in high school, so I had a good base!
Matt is hands down one of the smartest professors I've ever had. His course is tough, but that's not his fault. Its College Physics. Show up to lecture everyday and study your notes. If you are struggling, take time to meet with him, or get a tutor. It's all on you. Matt is a really cool guy, and he wants you to succeed. Would definitely take again
physics is a tough course in general but after taking his class at blinn i was so glad i didn't take it at A&M. its only four weeks homework is online and a real grade booster so do it as well as labs are easy and he gives plenty of time to do homework and ask questions in class. also with him you ll minor in bitcoin trading
Incredibly disappointing. Matt was consistently late, especially on exam days. Most lab days turned into free study time; attendance was mandatory even though Matt would leave class to take his lunch. Consistently unprepared for lecture. Slow to return test grades. Self-study was crucial to understand the material, but he was a lenient grader.
Solid choice. Matt is really cool and understanding. Do the exam reviews because they're basically more or less like the exams given in class. I haven't taken physics since high school so like 4 years lol and I did perfectly fine in this class. I guess it depends on how you learn but I really enjoyed Matt's teaching style.
I took this as a summer class and Dr. Cervantes made it enjoyable. His lecture style takes some getting used to at first, but it actually works very well. He is a very fair grader and is good about giving partial credit on exams. Make sure to study the practice exams, and you will do well on the tests. He gives you everything you need to do well.
Teaching style is difficult to learn from.
Terrible teaching style. All lectures that he never explains. Terrible at communication
I highly don't recommend taking this professor. He tends to just write notes without explanation and expects the class to know it already. The book is not mandatory, please do not waste your money on the book. Online physics homework is difficult to work with since it is not optimized nor is the information on the exams.
I can not stress enough do not take him unless you have too! lectures the class and notes off the top of his head with nothing to look at. I will say on exams he is a light grader. there isn't even a way to prepare yourself, exam sample questions nothing like the actual test. online homework and labs will save your grade if struggling.
If I could give this prof a 0, I would. Makes up lectures on the spot that are very hard to follow. He gives very few explanations and expects the class to already know the material he is covering. Extremely unorganized and lazy. The test reviews are the only thing that can prepare you for the tests. I highly recommend avoiding this prof if you can
Very fair grader on tests and the class doesn't overload you with busywork. He goes off in tangents in lectures sometimes (don't mention bitcoin just don't do it). Ask questions in class because it his hard to reach him over email. Lectures are important and test questions have come straight from them. He isn't the most organized or best explainer.
Cervantes is the laziest professor I've ever heard of. He's shockingly unprepared for every single class; frequently comes in late with headphones in and coffee in hand. Doesn't use lecture notes; simply 'remembers' about something and decides to teach it for about 20 minutes before moving on to the next topic. You will never have numeric examples.
Cervantes is an awful prof. He's lazy, unorganized, and has a terrible style of teaching. He claims that everything is "trivial" and skips a lot of details in lectures. If you have no clue about physics or what he's talking about, then you MUST read the textbook. His tests don't give you much room to mess up. AVOID THIS PROF AT ALL COSTS.
I took Cervantes 2426 class over the summer. Tests are based mostly over lecture notes and the book, and maybe some homework problems. I do not understand why he has the ratings he does. If you study the notes and read the book, you'll do fine. Very fair with grading, sometimes goes off on tangents, but for the most part, I enjoyed his class.
This Professor knows his stuff when it comes to the subject, but has a terrible way of trying to teach it to you. If it doesn't click for you the first time you see it he is frustrated. Frequently late, unorganized, and slow to grade so if that bothers you don't take him. Nice guy but not so much for teaching.
cool professor but he keeps drawing shapes all over the board
He is one of the worst and rudest professors i have ever had. What ever you do please do not take this class. He is never prepared for class. When you ask questions he is very condescending and will not answer your question. No review for test. He takes a long time to grade and gives no partial credit on the test.
It is truly shocking that Cervantes is a college prof. Don't get me wrong, he knows the subject and has the education to back it up, but he is horrid at teaching. Matt seems more interested in taking home a paycheck rather than teaching Physics. Unless you already are confident in physics, pick a different prof.
One of the worst professors Blinn has to offer, do not take his class. He doesn't curve despite the fact that the class average was a 40%. Stay away from this guy
Professor Cervantes is a nice guy but thats pretty much it. Hes horrible at teaching, frequently late for class and his exams are almost impossible to pass. Ive never studied harder for a class in my life and still failed two exams before having to drop it. The majority of the class (80+%) failed the first two exams and more than 2/3rds dropped.
There's 2 things I learned from Cervantes; that everything is "trivial", and that he needs a different job. Lectures mean absolutely nothing and aren't relevant to what you will see on the tests, and he is extremely unorganized from the minute he walks in with his coffee and headphones in. Avoid him
I study without Chegg. You should try that instead of blaming him for your shortcomings. Your qualitative deficiencies in intellect is strong - Dr. Cervantes appears to have quantified that for you. Stop looking for a free pass or go back to where you find "intellectual" safe space. Dr. Cervantes' course is a tour de force for the strong-minded.
He is ok.
I took PHYS 2426 during the summer. It is not an easy course but Mr Cervantes managed to simplify it. He used paper notes to teach. He was always available after class. He explained hard questions efficiently and had our interests in mind like removing very hard questions from the online homework.
First and foremost, lecture notes are critical. Live them, breathe them, and practice them 10 times. If so, you MAY pass an exam. Be aware this is not an easy course. If you fail the first exam, either drop or get help ASAP (go to office hours). Overall, Dr. Cervantes is great and would 100% recommend if you ACTUALLY want to learn physics.
Dr. Cervantes is a professor who knows his stuff, if you do not pay attention to his lectures your grade will reflect that. He has high standards for his students but as you progress you will see how much things can get repetitive. genuine intentions & if he sees you trying and reaching out, he will help you. Reach out and talk to him! Would retake
Absolutely horrendous professor. In face to face lectures he would always show up late and unorganized. Lectures seem to be whatever comes to his mind, no clear path. With Corona we switched to online class where he gave minimal updates and just gave us lecture notes and the textbook to figure it out ourselves, no examples for the test.
Dr. Cervantes is a nice person, since he is very helpful during office hours and is patient. However, because he knows his stuff extremely well, he has high expectations from his students, and therefore expects you to put in the time and effort into really understanding what is being taught, and not just memorize things.
Don't pick him. Period.
He goes so fast during lecture I felt like I was in a Mandarin class. This guy is not good at teaching
I would advise anyone needing this class as a requirement on your degree plan to not take him. Most of the class dropped. Lastly, if you are like me and physics is just a requirement and not a subject you enjoy then take a different prof. You'll be glad you did.
Don't take him. He does not care about the class, just here for the money. He has a doctorate in the material and teaches as if everyone has one. Classes switched to online, and he does not provide any lecture material. His lectures in class were sloppy, unorganized, and brief. He does not care to make sure his students actually learn the material.
To sum things up .... he's a terrible professor. Does not care about the students. And he is unprofessional. So many people have already dropped from my section. If he pops up as your professor either drop the class and use AP credit or take another professor. The only reason I gave him a 1 is b/c RMP makes me. HE SUCKS!!! HE REALLY SUCKS!!!
Really just the worst Professor. Almost the entire class dropped. Wanted to give pop quizzes because too many People are doing good. Just dont take him unless physics is already a breeze
DO NOT TAKE!
Well, I guess I tried.
At least the pandemic forced him to make the tests easier but he made no attempt to work out problems. We had zoom lectures and all he did was talk. Sometimes he would just ask if we had any questions and ended early. You had to teach yourself everything. He means well and wants students to really understand the physics but digs too deep for most.
He was not good at all. He made the tests easier due to the pandemic but still, most of the class failed because he never taught. Doesn't work out the problems. You have to teach yourself everything in this course. During zoom lectures, he would go off-topic and talk about how it sucks to be us because we are in a pandemic and he can't teach us.
He was a TERRIBLE professor. Even before the pandemic he was tough and bad at explaining the subject. He expects you to understand immediately and if you dont then he blames it on lack of effort. Switched to online format he got even worse and told we had to teach ourselves. The zoom meetings he held were useless. Got a B because I got a tutor.
Barely passed this class. I would not recommend. He was bad before the pandemic but once everything went online, he became worse. There was no point in attending the zoom lectures b/c there was no lecture. There really is no point saying anything else b/c this class it that bad. Don't take him.
The reviews speak for themselves. He's a terrible professor and that's pretty much it. Even before the pandemic he was wack and after it he got even worse. The only reason I pulled off a B is because I literally dedicated my life to this class. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT take him.
He doesn't teach well. Grades hard. Takes off so many points. More than half the class dropped.
He was terrible to us. Accused us all of cheating . Basically no lectures during pandemic, shows up and then ends zoom meeting early. Nothin much more to say about him.
Terrible. Idk how I passed.
This dude is the laziest professor I've ever had. He's shockingly unprepared for every single class. Generally comes in late with headphones in and coffee in his hand. Doesn't really use lecture notes. He 'remembers' about something and teaches it for about the entire class, then remembers what he was supposed to talk about. Then he became worse.
Took Physics C in high school and got an A in the class and a 5 on the exam. Took this guy and barely passed. I do not recommend him. Once we went online, like everyone else says he basically left it up to us to teach ourselves. But even before the pandemic, he was terrible. Unless you have a PhD in physics, take another prof. My 2 cents of advice.
Before the pandemic, he was just kind of mediocre, but during the pandemic he was unacceptable. Never before have I had a teacher be so unhelpful. He barely taught and responded in very condescending ways to my emails (if he responded at all). I understand I can't expect every teacher to be amazing in this transition, but he failed in every way.
He was way below average. I thought chem was bad but got an A. This class on the other hand ... Don't take it. It's pretty bad.
Stay away from this professor. He has unreal expectations of his students, goes too fast during lectures, and you can't even read his awful handwriting anyways. Take anyone else if you can.
Mans is terrible at teachin. Did not help during pandemic and gave super hard tests. Recent reviews sum him up pretty well. Got a C in the class.
Dr. Cervantes doesn't know what he's doing, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a more incompetent intellect at Blinn. Goes quickly and lectures can be confusing whether you familiarize yourself with core concepts ahead of time or not. Whether students actively engage him or not he does not teach effectively. Don't take him or else you're screwed!!!!
No bueno.
Literally have not had a worse experience in my life. As a senior at TAMU trying to get a credit I have never had a worse professor. 16-18+ hours of online lecture a week with no shortage of homework and quizzes that in no way related. Any other prof here is fine but avoid this guy unless you want to drop like 20 of only 30 students in my class.
I actually made a rate my professor account just for him as this is the worst professor I've ever had. I'm an engineering student used to dealing with tough classes but this class was terrible. He is disorganized and his lectures are on par with what you'd expect from a substitute teacher. If you take him, you'll have to teach yourself everything.
His syllabus said that we should expect 1 to 1.5 hour lectures (since we were online during a pandemic) but instead we had on average 2.5 hour lectures everyday plus the homework and labs. Quizzes and tests were extremely difficult with problems we were not taught how to solve and after were told to be better. Just straight up dont take him.
This professor is the worst professor I have ever had. His lectures are extremely long and do not make sense. In the online summer format, you can expect a lecture to be between 2.5-4.5 hours long per lecture and you will sometimes have 2 to watch in a day. He gives extremely hard quizzes and his tests are difficult. Stay away if you can!!!!!!!
If you are looking to take this class at Blinn because you think itll be easier DONT. His lectures were up to 4 hrs long everyday, he is no help and makes mistakes all the time. I worked a minimum of 12 hrs on this class everyday and failed 3/4 exams. This was the worst class Ive taken and Im a BIMS student at TAMU so I think that says something
35 started, 13 remained, a maximum of 7 passed (probably closer to 5). If you take it online, the quizzes are almost impossible, and the tests are just as bad. if you can drop and get a refund, just save yourself the headache and money. To clarify; avoid this professor at all costs unless this is your ONLY option. Just don't do it.
I am begging you to reconsider taking this professor. This man puts in the absolute minimum amount of effort required of him by the department. There are no supplemental materials, extra credit, or curves of any kind. Tests are 100% different from what he teaches and he doesn't care about your concerns. He'll mock you for them later in a lecture.
This is by far the hardest class I have ever taken and I didn't come out of it with any more knowledge than I went into it with. The quizzes were impossibly hard. The lectures were 4 hours long and I still had to read each chapter in the textbook and teach myself the material. The tests were incredibly hard no matter how long you study. Avoid him
Avoid him at all costs. This is the hardest professor I've ever had. He never did an example in his 4 hour lectures that related to the test. I worked at least 6 hours a day minimum on his class and still had to drop it.
Idk how I passed. I passed w/ a 69.5, at least he rounddd up to let me pass. Do not recommend him though. He is absolutely terrible! DON'T TAKE!
I took his class in the beginning of Spring 2020. He was an alright professor and seemed nice enough; it was tough, but I was able to stay afloat. However, with the pandemic and transition to an online class, he failed to provide real lectures which made it impossible to pass the exams despite my efforts. Highly recommend you take someone else.
I hated this class. I recommend you to drop this course. DO NOT TAKE!
Dr. Cervantes is a professor who doesn't know his stuff, if you don't pay attention to his lectures, no worries. He has low standards for his students, as you progress you will see how much things can get repetitive b/c he sucks. He has terrible intentions & if he sees you trying and reaching out,he won't help you. Don't reach out and talk to him!!
Would give a zero if possible. Figured these reviews were just disgruntled students that didn't study, nope he really is this bad. Don't be fooled; the only good ratings on here were fabricated by him to boost his own score. Without a doubt the most unprepared 'teacher' I've ever had, also he takes over a month to grade quizzes. Don't take him!
Through the semester, I realized the shear intensity of the class when the homework assignments were 100 to 150 questions long once or twice a week, along with the occasional short quiz which he would announce a few days or just hours before it was due. His handwriting was almost impossible to read, and his lectures were just reciting the textbook.
Worst experience Ive ever had with an educator. Clearly has disdain for students. Sloppy, rude, late and unprepared for class. Cruel. Difficult to understand written or spoken materials. Does not answer questions or give meaningful feedback. Mocks his students. Avoid this professor at all costs. His reviews speak for themselves.
Do not take even if you think " eh I bet he's not that bad" he is, you wont do good. Dr. Cervantes is by far the worst professor I have ever had; he is arrogant, prideful, lazy, unorganized, unprofessional.... the list goes on. Cervantes does not care about his students the slightest bit, his favorite phrase was "That's not my job". Save your time
Physics is a hard subject, but this guy's poor teaching and organization skills made it unnecessarily difficult. The lectures don't go into enough detail and each homework assignment can take up to 3+ hours. There are no curves, retakes, or replaced grades in anyway. Above all, this guy just doesn't seem motivated or caring about what he's teaching
Mostly everything the other reviews say is true. However it is possible to get an A, and if you're unfortunately stuck with Cervantes, I would recommend taking notes on each lecture's content from the textbook BEFORE the lecture and also studying tons of practice questions before each test. Start the class off as strong as you can; don't give up.
Cervantes is a nice guy and wants you to do well in his class, but I never felt that his lectures and homework prepared me well for exams. This is a tough class so if you take him, be prepared to spend a lot of time studying and doing homework.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. This is by far the worst class I have ever taken (I have taken Ochem 1 and 2). He does not care about his students. He is very unorganized. He changes due date an hour before they are due and either never reschedules them or cancels them. This hurt my grade because there was less assignments. There is not a curve.
I do not recommend taking Physics 1401 with Cervantes at all. The lectures were horrible and could extend to 4 hours for one day. They also do not prepare you for the homework or the exams. He is disorganized and makes changes/posts announcements very late in the day (10pm to sometimes 12am or later). I would avoid taking physics with him!
Lol, good luck. No physics class should ever be a 4-week course. You are supposed to learn a chapter a day which includes a 2-4 hour lecture, 2+ hours of homework a day without studying. The lectures are all over the place and do not really explain the concepts of how physics works rather just going through the motions. Do not take.
DO NOT take Cervantes as a 4week course. You will spend 6+ hours at least everyday on this course to just scrape by. He spends all of his lectures deriving equations that dont help you for the types of questions on exams. This course is like being dropped in the middle of the wilderness alone with a butter knife and having to get out alive. Awful
Literally, if I could revoke this terrible teacher's license as a doctor I would in a heartbeat and the unhelpful comments don't help me learn anything. Also, I really dislike the fact that this guy has the audacity to spam all the homework in the first week with 3-4 Homeworks back to back which I don't understand why didn't he spread out the HW.
It's obvious Dr. Cervantes knows his stuff, but doesnt know how to explain it on a lower level than what he thinks at. If you don't already have a good foundation on the concepts of physics going into the class then dont take him. Very disorganized though and handwritten tests. IF YOU DONT KNOW ASK QUESTIONS. hard to reach outside of class though.
If you can choose another professor, I would go that route. It's not impossible, but the semester is going to look grim. He is unorganized and scattered during class. It is hard to keep up with the way he teaches. Does offer a lot of help during office hours and even Friday sessions if needed, but it is still a pretty tough course to pass.
Prof. Cervantes' class is not easy. That said, if you stay on top of things you will do good. There is a lot of homework, but it is not the main focus of the class. Focus your attention on understanding his example problems and his quiz problems. If you can get those down, you will do good. He is a good prof. but he moves fast with or without you.
Cervantes is extremely fast passed and unorganized. Definitely knows his stuff, but doesn't know the best way to teach. Has many quizzes, but gives you time to do them, however they are time-consuming. Lots of hw on pearson and test are handwritten. If you have questions at the start of the course, ASK!! bc it just gets worse if you don't know!!!
he is not good
seems to be a nice guy, teaching he shouldn't do. He moves through multiple chapters in one day. Gives 4 hours of h w every 2 days and after taking physics for the second time with a different prof i have learned more in my first 5 days of class than my entire time in his 16-week course. You can pass but not with his help. Read the book.
He is super caring and kind. However, he admits he likes teaching because he can just "show up" and lecture. That's not what you want to hear from a prof. He's too smart to come down to your level. I've taken his class twice and continue to unlearn what I knew about physics. Lectures are thrown together, the textbook problems help the most.
Professor Cervantes is an OK teacher. This is an intense class with plenty of homework. Lectures are too short! Take the initiative to learn. Read the book, watch YouTube problems and/or ask for help. After I connected the dots (late) I felt proficient. Most reviews are too harsh imo, he's a nice guy. There were opportunities for extra credit.
He isn't the best teacher in the world but any information that you need for quizzes or tests will be in the lectures or it will be from the textbook. On tests as long as you give the problem your best shot you should be fine, the only thing I really have to complain about is the MasteringPhysics assignments. ASK QUESTIONS.
Sometimes, he would get a bit lost in lectures, but he explained a lot in such short time. Not too accessible outside of class. Not tech savvy at all. Best to work with classmates on homework and quizzes, ask questions in class, and watch videos afterwards. I was benefited by so much extra credit and he was very flexible with deadlines.
Knows physics very well and has an incredible understanding, he just doesn't know how to teach it to others. He goes so fast over the material and jumps around so much that you're left completely confused. I only survived by teaching myself.
Cervantes is a good proffesor. The homework is long and intense but helps a lot. The tests are heavily modeled around the homework/textbook as well as examples done in class. Show up to class and ASK QUESTIONS. Office hours are underutilized, and I would highly recommend if you plan to get an A. Try not to leave an answer blank on the test.
Physics is already difficult so taking it in 4 weeks is brutal. Expect 2-3 hours of homework and studying every day. Lectures move quickly and cover 1-2 chapters a day. Tests are straightforward just pay attention to his examples in lectures. This is a tough class but he makes himself very accesible if you have questions.
Would've gave him a 5 rating if he didn't speak as if we all knew what he knew. Lectures were super fast paced (but that was to be expected since this was a 4 week physics course) but I think the language he could've used could have been dialed down. He seemed like he thought we all just know his level of knowledge from the get go. Insane homework.
Mr. Cervantes is very disorganized and expects to know the material before you go to class. Everyone in the class seems lost and is afraid to say anything due to the lack of foundation we all had about physics. IF YOU CAN AVOID HIM AVOID HIM.
Dr. Cervantes isn't a bad professor, this class is just really rough. He focuses on derivations more than he probably should. I do wish he did more examples in class. He is very understanding and legitimately wants everyone to pass. He is a good professor, but the class is very rough. Be prepared to go 1000mph if you take this during the summer.
Took this over summer for 5 weeks & his lectures are all over the place but he teaches straight out of the textbook so if you need anything it is there. He is very understanding so as long as you talk with him, he'll work with you & your grades. The material is hard but that's not his fault. Ask questions and work with him & you'll be fine.
He's a really nice guy. He's a little hard to follow but you can slow him down and ask for help. Show him you're actually trying and he will do whatever he can to help. He's a little hard to reach outside of class so email him during the week.
Have to read a lot, but lectures are a good backbone. I took it during the summer and he was very caring and fair. He gives a lot of partial credit on tests. Be prepared to read the textbook and do homework since its necessary to get a good grade. Overall, good professor/understanding and you just need to put in the work to get the grade you want.
I took this class over the summer. Dr. Cervantes was honestly a good professor! Even if his lectures were sometimes hard to follow, he follows the textbook so it's easy to go back and study. He is generous with partial credit on his exams and gives extra credit. You can tell that he really cares about his students and wants everyone to pass.
Probably one of the best professors that I have had at Blinn so far. His lectures go a little fast, but he goes into depth about how everything is solved and answers questions well. He is available pretty much all the time if you have a question. The only thing I would say is definitely go to class because he does not post much online.
Prof Cervantes is a great professor. He was accessible outside of class. Though PHYS II is a challenging course, he makes it less strenuous with his method of explanation. If you want a professor for Summer, take him.
Absolutely the best physics professor at Blinn Bryan & RELLIS right now. I got an A in his class and let me tell you, he will work out any practice problem, homework problem, or previous test problem no matter what. Most days he stays on campus from 8 until 5 as long as someone is there to ask a question. Physics is hard, but he's the best option!
Do not pay heed to the good reviews as they are all written by him! He sucked. His class was one of the worst I had ever taken. You will barely pass unless you're a physics prodigy student!
Cervantes was the best college professor that I have had. If he sees that you are trying, he will do whatever he can to help. Physics is a hard subject in general. If you need this credit, take Dr. Cervantes!
If he's the only option you have then read the textbook ALOT and ahead of time. He doesn't use slides or anything and his lectures are a bit hard to follow because he doesn't use examples with numbers just symbolically and quickly. Read the chapters before lecture and make sure to show up because he does quizzes randomly. I'm sorry and good luck.
IF YOU WANT TO PASS PHYSICS STAY AWAY FROM HIM. HARD TO FOLLOW LECUTURES. THINKS THAT EVERYTHING IS A WALK IN THE PARK AND BELIEVES THAT YOU WILL UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING RIGHT OFF THE RIP. THE HOMEWORK WAS HEFTY AND DIDN'T HELP AT ALL. JUST STAY AWAY IF POSSIBLE!!!!
RUN,
If you have to take this course, then it's doable to pass. Cervantes offers study hours that may or may not help depending on how well he explains stuff. He moves fast and expects you to know everything as soon as it is said. Reading or watching youtube before his class will help a ton.
He isn't availible for longer questions. He doesn't convey the material well and follows the book. High levels of calculus/algebra decipher used. He doesn't give test reviews and is all over the place. His quiz's, tests, and instructions aren't clear. If your looking for a higher grade or more availible teacher; my suggestion is to look elsewhere.
It is true that Cervantes' lectures are hard to follow with no prior physics knowledge. But put in every ounce of effort you have and he will help you. He truly cares about his students and wants you to pass. Go to class and try your best, and you'll pass. Also be upfront with him about everything!!
Some reviews seem tough, but I got an A not being a no-life. Lectures are quick and use variables, which can be confusing. Homeworks are long and don't mirror exams. He's available for help outside class. Study his online quizzes and focus on lectures for exams. Pop quizzes happen, so attend. He's understanding and helps if you show effort.
Very nice prof, who helps success to those who try. Very generous grader. More than fair. He gives you all the time you need during office hours. Homeworks are useless and don't reflect exams. Do the practice quizzes and try as hard as possible to follow lectures as they can be fast-paced. Try your best and your grade will reflect it.
Worst professor I have ever had. I needed physics and he was the only professor available at the time offering it. I had to drop because of how careless he was about his students. It's like you are just watching him work for an hour. I ended up transferring and took physics elsewhere due to how horrible my experience was with Cervantes.
He's a great guy, and is truly brilliant. But when it comes to teaching, lectures are all over the place and impossible to follow. No slides, no notes, nothing. Get ready to teach yourself everything. I've taken 2 years of physics, and this class makes me feel brand new. It's like taking a course in rocket science in mandarin. Sorry dude
Professor Cervantes is a very brilliant man. His lectures are written in hieroglyphics and if you miss one you won't catch back up (assuming you can even understand them). The tests are all variable-based, there's no way to even study for them and aren't like the homework or textbook. I'm sorry but don't take him. May God watch over your poor soul.
He does all of his lectures on the white board where his handwriting barely legible and does only a few vague practice problems. The only online material is videos of the lecture you just attended, so expect to watch a lot of Organic Chemistry Tutor. He assigns A LOT of homework which, along with the lectures, look absolutely nothing like the exam.
Cervantes is a genius, but he's an awful prof. He's nice, and will sit down and help you with problems, but the way he explains it just doesn't click with most students. His lectures are written on the board, but you can't understand them b/c his handwriting is so bad. HW is WAY too long. Tests are handwritten as well so good luck understanding.
His lectures can be quite messy and hard to follow, however if you need a question answered he will always sit down and answer it very well. He's very flexible with due dates on the homework because sometimes they can be quite long. Very easy and fair tests, he lets you pick the problems that you want to do and then you'll be graded on them.
Prof Cervantes is a great professor and a great teacher. No, this is not some class you can just walk in and get an A or pass in general. You WILL have to try very hard to get a good grade. Show up to class everyday, take notes, study, and you will get an A or B. He is incredibly smart and a great professor who actually cares about his students.
This is not a blowoff class, or easy. However, Professor Cervantes is one of the best physics professors you will get. It is true that his lectures can be very fast pace, and you can be lost sometimes, but work hard and ask plenty of questions and he will be of great help to you. He is also a very generous grader, and just a cool dude overall.
Every other bad review is right. He is a very smart and nice man, but his teaching style is very hard to follow and most people will get lost. I barely got an A. If he is your only choice, try to do decent on the midterms, and the final will be your saving grace. He uses the same problems from previous exams, so know how to do all of them.
You won't learn anything about physics watching him teach. He'll do example probs on the board for an hour straight, pretty much assumes we know everything he's talking about, and then sends us home to homework we mostly have no idea how to do. Pretty much everyone failed his first test. Great guy, horrible teacher, i was lucky to pass
Definitely a difficult subject and the tests are very hard; however, he's very fair with your grade for the semester. You will struggle but you will make it.
Where to start? No practice exams(He's been teaching this course for 12 years), no partial credit, you get nothing in this 4 week course besides 30 minute office hours which he rants and speeds through problems. His lectures were created 2 years ago and are the poorest quality. When I went to his office hours, he had to restart a question 3 times.
An overqualified mess. Dr Cervantes is so unorganized and zips through problems with the assumption that you know what's going on. Come's across as condescending with statements like "I don't see why you could have missed this." Homework is nothing like exams and provides no point of reference. Might barely make a C. RUN
Taking physics as a 4-week summer class is not easy, but Dr. Cervantes makes it as bearable as possible. His lectures show you how to work problems on the exams. Come to class every day, participate and ask questions, come to office hours, and you will pass. He is very generous with his grading and will give you points for being on the right track.
Dr. Cervantes is super passionate and friendly but makes an introductory class feel like you're taking a PhD level class. His "lectures" are chaotic, random, and often made up. His homework on Pearson is hours in length and never reflects the in-class examples, pop quizzes, and tests. Speaking of which, there are no exam reviews. 70%+ dropped.
Cervantes is a brilliant but challenging professor. His lectures can be tough to follow, but he's willing to help if you get lost. Definitely use the free textbook and study resources like ChatGPT and unstuckstudy - they really helped me prepare for the exams.
exams are worth 70 percent of your grade and they are not easy. if you dont care about learning physics, dont take this class, if you love physics , this is a great class, cervantes is highly overqualified with a phd for physics from tamu and 4 degrees. basically hes smart and expect his students to be smart or as hardworking as he is. helps a ton.
DO NOT TAKE. He gives no freebies, homework takes hours, and is nothing like the test. I just took the final and likely will not pass the class. 50%+ of my class has already dropped and only about 2-3 kids are even passing in my class. Doesn't provide any review material and doesn't curve tests even when averages are well below failing.
This is not an easy course, if you don't have a fundamental understanding of Calculus 1 and a decent amount of general Calculus 2 knowledge, you will struggle. While he does go fast through lectures, one physics identity flows into the next as long as you can keep up and TAKE NOTES. While the tests were hard, he does give extra credit.
He is a really smart guy but his lectures go way above your head unless you just took physics within the last year. His pop quizzes are just made up problems. He just writes notes on the board out of his head. The only good part was up to 12% back on tests but honestly everyone fails so it really doesn't help. I had to drop.
Before taking his class, I'd never taken physics before, and up until around spring break, I was blowing off his class. I had around a 50, but when I started putting in effort in his class, I brought that grade up to a B (I hope). He really does care about his students, but you can't just blow it off and expect a good grade, you have to try too.
His lectures are very confusing, and he doesn't make videos to go back on. He gives pop quizzes that are just one question that he comes up with, and usually over something we had just learned. The tests are challenging, but he lets you get up to 12 points back by correcting. Several opportunities at the end of the semester to get our grades up.
He is a cool guy but don't take him. There is not a ton of structure and lectures are off the top of his head on the board with no slides to refer back to and moved way to fast. I studied my butt off all semester and had to drop because the test were so hard. there are pop quizzes that make sure you come to class. Take another teachers section.
This class is doable, but I'd highly recommend taking with a different professor. He lectures very quick and all over the place. One of the other professors has a website with review material, definitely use it especially to prepare for the first exam to see what you're in for.
This man gets a bad wrap. I took him this summer expecting the worst because of some reviews but in all honesty he was a great professor. All that you needed to do in order to get a good grade was come to class, and write down everything he says (especially the examples) and study them. Very knowledgeable, willing to work with you.
Professor Cervantes is a super cool professor. A lot of the reviews are saying he's a bad professor, he is not physics is just a hard class. You must study and you must go to office hours to get a great understanding. I really enjoyed his class and would no doubt take him again. I think if you are wanting to challenge yourself take him
People say he's a “challenge.” No he makes your life a living hell. Tests ARE LETHAL and honestly feel like he doesn't help, and he acts like this is your only class. His handwriting is absoulty top 10 worst ive seen, so you're decoding notes instead of learning. Seems kind, but lowkey enjoys watching people suffer. Save yourself, I'm warning you.
I don't know why so many people complain about this guy. If you study the example problems that he does in class, you'll do well on the exams. He also offered test corrections that can earn you 10 points on your exam grade. He first comes off as an a-hole tbh but he genuinely want you to succeed. I also recommend A+ tutoring for this class
Really nice guy, but probably the worst professor I have ever had. Has a very specific style of teaching and if you dont get it right away, good luck.
