He's very enthusiastic about teaching. Answer questions in class and he will love you. He is very accomodating for meeting outside of class and even office hours. Asking questions is very helpful.
good prof
Very helpful, caring, and enthusiastic. Quizzes can sometimes be hard but if you study you should be fine.
Class was fun. Dr. Chapman jokes around a lot. There were no exams for this class, just daily quizzes of which the lowest two were dropped. Had no problem slowing down on concepts that were difficult. He once helped me with questions on a class that wasn't his.
Very entertaining guy. You can tell he's interested in the subject, and wants students to understand what he's teaching. The tests were pretty hard though.
He is a funny guy. He wants you to do well and he cares. I enjoyed going to lectures when he was the professor. The professors alternate half way through the term and Chapman was much better in my opinion.
Good & enthusiastic prof, I never actually went to office hours but he seemed eager to help students.
The guy is the man. just study the notes and you'll be straight.
My class was i-clicker based, so attendance was mandatory. Exams weren't too bad- if you spend the time to go through each lecture and memorize, you'll get at least B. Honestly, I found my AP Biology class in high school harder. Exams aren't cumulative and material level is what I'd expect from an introductory biology college-level biology course.
Great prof. Really enjoys teaching and his "Flipped" class style is really nice and helpful. Keeps you up on the material without having to cram for an exam. Definitely learn more and enjoy the semester. Favorite class I took my senior year.
He is a funny guy and keeps class interesting. The material is fairly straight forward, but there is a lot of it so studying is necessary. Also, the only info on the exam is from lecture so the book is only for clarification.
Amazing Professor. His class was one of the only ones I actually looked forward to going to.
He is a great professor and seems to really enjoy teaching this class. I wish he was teaching the class for the entire semester.
Multiple choice questions on exams can be very tricky, but he explains things well and is usually very willing to help.
Chapman is fantastic. He makes the material really easy to understand and he is really fun! I loved having him as a professor and I enjoyed going to class because of him. His exams were not very difficult at all if you study the material and pay attention in class. Overall a great professor! Highly recommend.
Hard class unless you're super into biology, and even then you will probably have to study a lot since the averages for the exams are usually in the low 70s. He does a good job of explaining things though! One of the best professors I've had in a bio class here.
He's a great professor. Exams are hard, but fair and very representative of the material. You will have to put in a decent amount of work to get some form of A. If you put in the expected effort you shouldn't fail to get at least a B.
Chapman is a great professor who explains everything clearly. Exams may be tricky, but are very reflective of the lectures. The only problem is he only teaches the first half of the course. The other professor's exams are really designed to trick you. You WILL see the difference.
Chapman is easily distracted and all over the place during his lectures, making it difficult to focus. The exams were also very tricky and required thorough understanding of the course material. Overall, this was an intense and demanding course.
Overall, Chapman as a great professor. His exams are not that hard. It suck how he only taught the first half of the course. I just got screwed over on Csankovszki's exams.
Chapman clearly enjoys what he is doing. It is not common to find a research professor who enjoys teaching undergrads, especially the intro courses. Sadly, he wasn't teaching the entire term as the professor for the second half wasn't so kind.
Pretty good professor. Cares about student success. Exams are pretty straightforward, although there can be some very difficult multiple choice questions. I did well on his exams, but not on Csankovszki's.
Funny guy and explains things with energy which is nice. Hard exams but not impossible to do well on. Discussions count for points so go to them and do well on the mini quizzes each week. Gyorgi teachers the second half of the class, and it's a big change going from Chapman to her, in many aspects. Overall good class. Oh, and he's hot!
Chapman was a great lecturer and made his exams hard but still straightforward. Everything came from the slides and nothing was a huge surprise. Enjoy having him while you can because when Csankovszki takes over for the second half of the course, the exams are MUCH harder.
Dr. Chapman is one of the best professors I've had at Michigan. He is really engaging-- he constantly cracks jokes that help make microbiology entertaining. He also really knows the material (and how to teach it) and never surprises you on exams; I went to almost every lecture and did not need to study more than a few hours for the exams.
For being an intro bio course, this is an incredibly, unnecessarily difficult class. You can memorize all of the lectures but still fail the exam because almost all questions are theoretical rather than what was taught. Chapman specifically rushes through lectures & does not give students time to digest or even finish taking notes before moving on.
Decent lecturer, and the exams are very fair. You can honestly not pay attention in lecture, just spend about 10 hours the weekend prior to the exam reading the textbook, and get an A. In my experience, those who say the exams are difficult rarely crack open the book, which is a fantastic resource.
Lectures with Chapman were fun and interesting, but they did not prepare you for the exams. If you take a class with him, be prepared to study. A lot.
Always trying to crack jokes instead of focusing on material. Constantly gets off topic and then has to rush through the slides. The lectures don't prepare you for the exams, and instead you should focus on reading the book. He was nice enough as a man, but I would suggest taking it with someone else.
MCDB 415 (Microbial Genetics) is an EXCELLENT class. I had him for both 172 and 415 and while I thought he was great for both, 415 is much more fun. No exams, just daily quizzes over lectures and primary literature. The quizzes are not difficult if you do the readings, but are not automatic A's either. Chapman is super helpful (and hilarious!)
4 exams total. He taught the first half of my semester (first 2 exams) then we switched professors. Exams are very tough because multiple choice are worth 4pts each. Assigned readings are long but necessary. Launchpad quizzes and iClicker questions provide easy points.
Exams are so rough. I studied for 30+ hours each time and never got more than a C. Exams are worth 75% of your grade, so it completely ruined me. Chapman just reads from the powerpoints, so you have to do every reading and do it for comprehension. He was a lot funnier in the recorded lectures than in mine, but he was still really funny.
Most people don't go to his office hours, so they don't know ...... But Dr. Chapman is one of the nicest person I have ever met! His lectures are hard, but he really tried to engage. Lucky to have him for one of the hardest bio class.
Chapman made lecture worth going to every day. material was hard, but it was easy to pay attention
Dr. Chapman's lectures were very clear, helpful and funny! He'd make comments and jokes that made the whole lecture hall smile or laugh. He's understanding and makes the test questions fair and straightforward. Would love to take another class with him! He also allows unlimited tries to get a 3/3 on the quizzes which takes a lot of stress off.
Prof. Chapman is simply amazing. Does a great job at explaining the content during lectures. Exams draw directly from lecture, which are recorded and can be rewatched. Past exams are available to study from, which are almost identical to the exams given. Free discussion and quiz points to slightly bring up your grade. Shame he only taught half.
Professor Chapman is by far one of my favorite professors I have ever had. He is very clear and easy to follow, and his lectures are actually entertaining because of his classic dad jokes. His exams were directly based off of lecture material and he provided plenty of past exams that had almost the exact same questions on them.
Loved Chapman. His lectures were pretty clear and representative of his exams. Office hours are helpful too
Chapman has a dad personality, and is great at lecturing. To do well in this class, review discussion slides and take notes on and go to every lecture (iClicker points). Try your best to do well on every discussion/launchpad quiz, those add up. The tests are all pretty hard, but you don't need to use the textbook at all to do well in the class.
I took Matt for the first half of my Bio 172 class. He was funny, lightened up the class, but that didn't make the exams any easier. The questions were meant to trick you, so just be ready to put in work for this class.
Chapman was hilarious in a dorky way. Made biology funny. Exams seem difficult but if you just study the lecture slides top to bottom before the exam a 100% is obtainable. Get the points they give you in discussion and lecture and just study those slides like never before. I learned this too late, got a 65 on the first exam and 93 on the last.
Chapman was an amazing lecturer! Very funny and had a great attitude. I learned so much in this class but it's going to take a considerable amount of studying. Great class with a phenomenal teacher! Would definitely recommend!
Professor Chapman is so funny and he tries his best to make every lecture entertaining. He is very personable, and although I never went to office hours, he seems very accessible outside of class.
Prof. Chapman is awesome. His lectures are very clear, he tries to make them entertaining, and he is incredibly personable. His exams can be tricky, but he always makes a point of slides he plans to include on his exams, and his practice exams are VERY similar to the real ones. Overall, very kind and clear about his expectations. Great guy.
He's relatively new but laughs at his own mistakes and is very down to earth. Really nice and approachable guy.
Chapman is an amazing professor and a very kind individual. He enjoys helping his students during office hours, and it's a great way to bond with him as well! His tests can be tricky, but if you study the lecture notes intensely and try to understand each concept, you'll be able to do pretty well on his exams and within the class. Take 172 w/ him!
Overall he's a pretty good professor. Not the best one I've had, but he knows his stuff and is all around a great guy!
He was a great professor. Don't buy the textbook, just the access code!
He is the nicest professor I have ever met!!!! There is no exam for this class but you get to learn a lot. Quizzes are not hard you need to study for it!
He's amazing! The material can be quite difficult at times, but if you ask him for clarifications he always helps out. No midterm or final but daily quizzes which are lowkey difficult, just make sure you pay attention to previous lectures. Dr. Chapman is hilarious and genuinely wants everyone to do well.
Dr. Chapman is a great professor and is someone you definitely want to take biology with. Bio is a lecture-heavy subject with lots of info, but Chapman occasionally inserts jokes and makes it engaging. Overall great guy!
The content of this class seems pretty basic in lecture, and then you show up to the exam and it feels basically impossible. The exam is way too hard and in depth for the amount that they actually teach you in lecture, and they rely on TAs to teach you a lot of important info that you need to know for the exam. So frustrating.
Chapman is very funny and sweet and teaches pretty well, but the class is just unreasonably difficult. The material is straight forward but there is simply too much of it and he tries to trick you on the exams. I spent all my waking time on this class and could still barely keep my head above water. Never again.
Prof Chapman is fantastic! His lectures are rather clear and direct. No need to read the textbook! You will get a good grade if you listen carefully in class and have good revision after class.
Nice guy, but the exams were super difficult for me. Recommend studying way in advance.
Prof. Chapman is a super charismatic guy and would make my day better by hearing him lecture. You can tell that he was really smart and knew his stuff. My only qualm is that the lectures and exams did not perfectly match. Oftentimes, the tests included a lot more nitty gritty details than were included in lecture. Expect very difficult exams.
I loved Dr. Chapman. His lectures were engaging and interesting, but there's lots of content. His exams were very difficult and you MUST study early, but I attended almost every office hours and even made a separate appointment, and I did just fine! You have to put in effort, but he is such a nice guy and absolutely wants to help you do your best.
Chapman is a really good lecturer and keeps the class engaged. He also takes the time and care to go through the exams and find the tricky questions and reward more than one answer sometimes, increasing many test scores. Really kind professor who knows what he's talking about.
Pretty cool guy, easy to understand, exams were quite insane though. Bio 172 is not exactly an easy class but they do you no favors with how difficult the exams are written, you must know literally every detail or you are guaranteed to get questions wrong. Problem roulette problems were much easier than the actual exams, kind of misleading.
Dr. Chapman made Biology 172 so much fun. He is a great teacher, always available in office hours, and is truly passionate about the subject, which makes his teaching that much better. If you are unsure about taking biology I would say take it if it is with Dr. Chapman.
Professor Chapman himself is fine, but unfortunately the course itself is horribly designed. Most of your grade comes from 4 exams, none of which were reasonable. You'll have to memorize every detail from roughly 15 hours of lectures for each exam. Questions themselves are needlessly nit-picky, and it's never clear what info to focus on in studying
Prof. Chapman was great this semester. Very clear lectures and there were no huge surprises on tests, for the most part. Even online, his quirkiness and passion for the subject were clear. He would always be cracking subtle dad jokes mid-lecture and one can't help but chuckle
I absolutely loved Professor Chapman-- by far the most down-to-earth professor I encountered this semester. He put a lot of emphasis on making information accessible and easy to understand, and his lectures were incredibly engaging. As some have mentioned, his tests were a bit challenging, but I learned to adapt to the format. Great guy!
Although biology 172 is a tough course, Professor chapman never misses a beat and thoroughly explains everything you need to know for exams. Make sure to utilize every possible resource to succeed in this class and to stay on top of assignments as it is an intensive course and can be really easy to fall behind....
Chapman was a super nice guy but he sometimes got carried away and would spend the majority of a review sessions only discussing one or two questions. The class is basically just watching lectures and taking 4 exams for a big chunk of your grade, but he did a pretty good job at explaining concepts in lecture and the tests were hard but not awful.
Honesty the 172 teaching staff was lazy this year. They are not hard workers. Chapman included. The material was fine but with lazy teachers the class was more difficult than it should be.
Professor Chapman is a really nice guy, he makes the lectures fun to listen to and isn't afraid to crack a joke or two. However, he has a tendency to go off on long tangents about things that don't end up on the exam. This makes it really difficult to know what topics are important and what to focus on when studying.
Prof. Chapman is wonderful! His lectures are engaging and he makes the course material very digestible. Chapman and the rest of the Biology 172 team makes themselves very accessible throughout the course which made the difficult exams a little more bearable.
I recommend taking BIO172 with Professor Chapman! Even though this class covers challenging content, he was always a clear lecturer and was always willing to help students understand points of confusion.
Good at explaining
Chapman is a God. His lectures were interesting and I thought the exam questions he wrote were very reasonable. The only issue with this class is that he doesn't teach it for the whole semester.
Professor Chapman is the best! Although 172 is a difficult course, he made the lectures entertaining and interesting. I wish he taught the whole semester!
I had Dr. Chapman for the first half of my Biology 172 course. He is passionate about what he teaches and does a good job at conveying difficult content in a clear manner. However, he does tend to ramble off-topic, and you need to pay close attention to lecture. Chapman and Dr. C worked well together and I would take another course with them again!
Professor Chapman is almost always extremely clear when explaining course material. The main con is that he lectures fairly slow, and we almost never completely finished what he had planned, sometimes significantly less. But, the exams were always adjusted to accommodate what we had time to review in class.
Great Prof!
Great professor!
Dr. Chapman was extremely clear in his teaching and had a clear interest in the material. He could be relatively boring at times but overall he was a good teacher. The class difficulty was not due to him, but was rather due to the difficult material taught in bio 172. Reading the textbook is entirely optional.
Dr. Chapman seems like a very nice person. However his teaching skills tend to make things over complicated than they should be when going over material. The difficultly is due to the subjects of the matter. I can tell Dr. Chapman tries his best to make lectures interesting but they are just straight up not. Overall good prof.
Matthew Chapman is by far one of my favorite professors I've come across at the University of Michigan. He makes long 90 minute biology lectures interesting and easy to follow. While exams make up the vast majority of one's final grade in bio 172, his exam questions are completely fair. If you're attentive during lecture, you'll be fine.
Exams killed but Chapman made lectures interesting and tried to explain things multiple ways. They sometimes give a cheat sheet for exams but this is kinda a toss up each semester. No matter the professor for 172 outside studying is a need.
Chapman is great. Lectures are super clear and easy to follow. Tests are hard and unforgiving but doable if you put I the time. Overall best professor for 172.
Pretty simple, class based on applying concepts, 4 tests (not cumulative) and get a full front and back cheat sheet. Uses iClicker but can technically do it from anywhere. Recorded lectures posted.
Matthew is a wonderful guy who loves what he is teaching, but is a very boring lecturer who will answer class questions that otherwise should be reserved for office hours. Also makes his exams harder than the learning supplied.
He only taught for the first half of the semester but he's a nice guy that seems to know his stuff. Lectures were a bit boring & unorganized at times but he's very passionate about teaching biology. There was a textbook but I never read it. I'd recommend taking the weekly quizzes multiple times and making a folder of all the questions you got wrong
Textbook was available and I found it mildly helpful. His lectured were ramble-y, but he is clearly passionate and knowledgeable about biology. Problem roulette is an amazing resource.
