Dr. Clavin is an excellent professor, but BEWARE! You must write your papers on what HE would like to read - or you won't get a good grade. His tests are very difficult, but you will learn in his classes. If you write well and about a topic he approves, you will do well in his class.

Clavin is a GREAT lecturer. He does assign a lot of reading and does expect you to do it. His tests can be difficult. His grading, on both tests and papers, is rather ambiguos and subjective. He does not like to give As but will give A-.

Clavin is interesting as a lecturer, but his tests are graded really odd. You must go to class almost every day, and no matter what your reasons for missing, even if your brother died or you got your leg cut off, he doesnt even care. Tough grader, but interesting class.

He doesn't grade on what you know and comprehend, i know he says that, but he's lying. He grades on what he knows, and at what level he knows it. SO if you don't go into depth on an explanation for a test, like a grad student would you get major points taken off.

This class is ridiculously difficult. 4 or 5 A's out of 26+ students? Nine or so papers? Three books and lots of online reading. And the papers are hit or miss. He's rarely clear about what he expects. I'd highly suggest trying to find out his opinion on a particular subject and regurgitate it back to him. Very liberal class. He is helpful, though.

The class is the basic history class for the most part. However, the test grades rely heavily upon essays and free response questions which are very hard to do well on. I found that no matter how much info I included it was never enough to get an 'A' on an essay. He does attempt to explain what he wanted but at that point it is too late. Dont take

He seems like a joker and easy-going but don't underestimate him. If you don't read AND PARTICIPATE, he will crucify you in front on the class. It's hard to make an A on his tests, because he has a very strong bias towards what HE considers a "right" answer. Key to success is reading the assigned chapters and participating in discussions.

Dr. Clavin's surface attraction may be a heavy distraction (for some students) from three facts: his grading system is based on how much you've learned from his lectures, not what interpretations you're able to find within the historical data; he's not very helpful within the office setting; & upon multiple sittings, his lectures grow stale.

Seriously best history class. I hate history and tend to struggle with it, but Clavin's class was awesome. He basically gives you the exams, 10 ID terms (6 on test, 4 you pick), 2 essay questions (only one on test). Other than that, it's just learnsmarts. UH professors love making core classes difficult for no reason. Don't waste your time taking this professor, he does not respond to emails or teach anything at all, but still has the audacity to grade harshly. 3 essays and smartbook assignments. Instructions on the essays were very unclear.

He was a nice professor and teaches very well. However, for a freshman class there was too much work. If you are taking other reading heavy classes (or 15 credits), this section should not be taken as well. The grading was very harsh for a freshman class. All in all, good professor, heavy workload for first years.

Great lectures but didn't allow technology only handwritten notes. Didn't upload lectures online, you miss then you miss the information. Had a TA, Smartbook assignments, + multiple essays. If you're not good at history I wouldn't recommend. I had a hard time keeping a good grade. Most assignments r based on textbook material not lectures.

If you have the option to take another professor DO IT! This class is graded extremely harshly for a core class. Make sure you take in-depth notes and read the textbook or else you're screwed. No electronics are allowed in class and he tends to ramble/focus on one topic too much. Takes forever to respond to emails and is kind of conceited tbh.

To start, he has a no electronic policy so all notes have to be handwritten in a notebook. With that being said, his lecture notes are extremely important and sometimes can substitute textbook notes. He's a tough grader but is also flexible with certain circumstances. Just follow his rubrics and show that you understand the concepts he teaches.

Clavin absolutely grades harsh. Don't expect to pump out an essay in a night and get an A from him. However, I would take a class with him again because his lectures were very engaging, it's very obvious has a passion for both history and teaching. He can come across as intimidating but is actually very understanding. I would recommend!
