only fun if in computer lab
Freud Sucks
u get graded on like 3 things and he changes when things are due all the time

pretty laid back. he is helpful, but you have to put in the effort. very open.
If you don't know what rhetoric is; don't bother
Copeland is so vague! Don't ask cuz you won't get a straight answer.
Total moron. Reads from the book, uncreative, boring, waste of time
Boring Class, Unclear Teaching, Hard Grader, But Pretty Laidback!
vague...his favorite grade is B so be prepared to get the whole range of B's...
Great paper!!! B MINUS!!! NOT NICE, MOODY
He stuck! Didn't learn anything from him. Learn more from the student teacher
Nice guy but very hard to understand.
Nice guy, don't read into what he says- it gets confuesing
He sucks, he's way too moody and blabs on and on about nothing
will get A if u give EXACTLY what he wants...but u gotta figure it out first!

he makes you work hard but's worth it 'cause you're out of the class 10x smarter
He LOVES to talk...understand him and you'll do GREAT...good luck though, heh

very hard to understand!!!!

very sporadic teacher... syllabus is not a good judgement of the confusion to come
I'm a smart guy but this class was terrible. Very unclear prompts.
I thought he was a really good teacher, most students that complain probably didn't even try. He's always there to help in class, during office hours, and conferences. Thanks for a great semester! :)
The best teacher I've ever had. You only need to show some effort and interest and he helps you whenever he can.
HE was a very scatterbrained teacher. took him 30 minutes to say what he could have in 5 min. very tempermental, moody often. not worth the time to take his class.

Doesn't know how to teach. Reads from the text during class and takes half an hour to start. Total waste of time. Beware! Wastes time with the stupid theories of Frued.
VERY HELPFUL INSTRUCTOR, IF YOU SHOW THE EFFORT. DOESNT LIKE TEACHING TO UNRESPONSIVE STUDENTS. HELPED ME THROUGH A LOT IN THE SEMESTER
Moody and Unclear. Much like a women in many senses. Be liberal in your anwsers and you will be okay, just don't make him cry....like he did last Fall.
wastes way too much time talking about stuff when discussion has ended. Grades way to hard. Probalby the last choice you want for an rws teacher
disorganized, uninteresting, not a very good teacher. grades hard. doesn't put much effort into the class. not a big fan.
Likes to hear himself talk, grades too hard and doesn't clarify the assingments. Take any other professor.
Great Teacher. It's tough, but if you try more than you complain in his class, you'll do fine. Be responsive to what he says and he'll help you out. He's not that hard. People who think so are obviously not good writers. You'll be a better writer after the semester, just do the work and listen!
Matt is a jerk. He tells you that you can write whatever you want, in your own style, but when it comes down to grading - if it's not exactly the way he would have written it, you get a horrible grade. If you go talk to him, he's a lot more sympathetic to you. Although he does beat around the bush and his lectures are confusing.
The wors teacher I have ever taken. I have an AA in English, and know how to write. I got an A- in the class, but not worth the effort. If you get stuck with him, crash a differnt class. He gives vague rules about everything, and when you dont do what he says (even though he does not say anything) you get bad grades. He is a long winded, rude, jerk
Great teacher!I am taking him again for 303. Really wants you to pass his class and he is very helpful. Just do all the work.
Overall better than advertised but is a tough grader so not an easy A. None of these writing classes are to be recommended, just an exercise in wasted time and more $ for school.
Matt is a fantastic teacher. Reading through all of his reviews I am not quite sure what everyone is talking about. He was incredibly helpful and really wants his students to do well. He was always willing to meet with students after class to clear up any confusion. In total we were only given 4 papers.
Thinks a C is a good grade. Told me my paper was very well written and gave me a B-. Extremely confusing grader; will tell you you're on the right track with homework and then kills you on the final. Send him your rough drafts to read. He reads them and grades them as if they were a final.
I don't know why everyone bashes him. I know a lot of people consider him a tough grader but I honestly wrote every paper the night before it was due and got an A on everything (including my final grade). I thought he was an awesome teacher although his directions for assignments were a bit vague.
He is one of my favorite teachers at State. He is always willing to look at your work outside of class so that you can learn and and develop your writing skills.
Cool dude. He made sure you knew the writing material well so when you wrote the essay you knew what you were talking about. Willing to help outside of class via email. I wrote an absolute horrible essay and got a C, but not once did i get over a B on an essay. Hard grader but easy B.
very silly class, with nothing useful to get out of it. nice guy though. He is kind of unclear of what he really expects out of every project. 2 essays and two small presentations.
I loved this class. I feel like I took a lot away from it without working my butt off. Going to his office for extra help with papers really pays off. He doesn't assign a lot of work, so when he does just put in the extra effort and do it well. I got an A in the class.
I love this prof. Super nice guy, always trying to be cool and relate to his students. You can tell her is really PASSIONATE about this subject and he is willing to do whatever it takes to help his students become better writers. Take advantage
Very specific, down to earth person who tries to find a common ground with students so we may grasp subject better. Cares about helping students do better at writing. Attendance is crucial.See him in his office and put 4th all effort to do well and he'll let U make up bad papers. A bit tough on grading but he has helped me do well in many classes
Hes really nice but he grades super hard!
He's really unclear. Sometimes I think he likes to hear himself talk sicne he goes on these really long useless rants. But for the most part he's nice. Makes you feel dumb sometimes when you talk to him. BUT BUT he sometimes lets you correct your papers which was awesome! His grading isn't all that bad. OFFICE HOURS ARE KEY!!
Rather confusing. It is hard to tell what exactly he wants to see in a paper. His prompts can be vague. However, he does offer a lot of help to students. He is always willing to take a look at your paper before it is time to turn it in, and can help improve it. Also gave us a chance to make corrections on one of our projects.
Copeland is horrible. Grades super hard and talks way to much. We didnt have class for like two weeks so we could write a paper. i highly recommend NOT taking him.
This is a pretty cool prof. The group papers threw me off a bit, but it gives you a chance to work with other students.
Matt Copeland was unable to teach an english class effectively. He rambled, cancelled several classes for personal reasons, was unclear even in explanations, and expected far too much for the teaching he provided. And I got a good grade in the class.
I saw his ratings last semester (right before spring 2009) and what others had said about him, but I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. I shouldn't have. And neither should you. Copeland rambled, was unclear about what he wanted in papers, and tried to sway your opinion to match his by grading lower when he didn't like it.
My writing skills improved a great deal due to this class! I highly recommend taking RWS with Copeland because his instructions are always very clear, and he is willing to work with his students in order to improve their grade. If you follow directions well, and aren't afraid to ask questions you will do well in his class!
Copeland is a REALLY cool guy and definitely my favorite teacher for first semester. His prompts can get a little unclear but as long as you put the effort into it, you'll be able to get a good grade. Only two papers and 2 "Final" projects which were easy. Can be a tough grader if you don't ask him for help! Use the textbook a little bit...
Copeland would be a great teacher if he put in more time. This semester he was very very spacey, and canceled class probably near five times. However, if you just do what he asks (basically put together all of the mini assignments) to make your paper, you will receive a high grade. He also allows rewrites. Just go, and make an effort!
pretty good prof, can be a bit unclear at times, but use the office hours to your advantage!
My favorite teacher last semester. Very personable and really wants you to do well. Ask questions and go to class because he will explain what he wants in the papers. He really appreciates if you go to office hours. Seriously nice guy!
The projects were interesting, but I didn't learn anything in this class. He cancels class (at least 4x during a summer session) because he refuses to use his own time to grade papers. He watches sports games while students try to get help from him.
best teacher go for it
really really nice guy. he would be really unclear at first in what he wanted in the papers but as long as you try and show him you make an effort to understand hes super reasonable. decently easy, definitely not a heavy workload
Very unclear with assignments, go to office hours for a good grade
Great Professor. As long as you try you will do good in the class. He is easy and super cool. He is very understanding and sometimes cancels class. He is not a hard grader. He is a great teacher. You watch movies and only have three essays the entire semester unlike other classes that have 4.
Do not take this teacher! He does not respect all the students equally. He was rude to me on several occasions and a few of my classmates as well. The class consists of 2 essays and 1 project so the work itself is easy but he is a very hard grader. All you need to do to pass this class is agree with everything he says and do NOT voice your opinion.
he's a nice guy, but is so vague in all of his prompts for the essays...Also we did sooo much group work while he just sat at his computer, instead of him actually explaining what our papers were supposed to be about. i would not recommend.
Im not a big English fan but this teacher is awesome!!a lot of group work and there are only 3 essays. The professor is super chill .GO TO HIS OFFICE HRS!! that will definitely boost ur grade. he sometimes misses class which is cool bc he extends the essay deadlines. I got a B- and didnt really go to class but did go to his office hrs.
3 essays, 1 final, and homework. Hated this prof mostly b/c of how rude and unhelpful he is. Students break up into grps of 4 for in-class work, but if your grp members stop showing up you're still expected to pull their weight and get everything done. His response to this was "just deal with it."
SUPER chill professor. loved him. watch movies only 3 essays and a lot of group work. he is really understanding. go to his office hrs for a good grade, will definetely help a lot. overall good teacher!! i got a b- and barely went to class it should be an easy b or a if you try
This teacher was awesome. If you go to class, participate and do your home, you won't have an issue. Go to office hours, he is very helpful and you can argue for your grade and if you're witty, you will get it boosted up. EASY CLASS if you do the work and don't procrastinate.
I got a C+ but I honestly didnt even try until the end. I did all my papers the night before they were do and turned one in late. Hes super chill . go to his office hours that will help a lot . and you watch movies a lot !!!
He was an OK teacher. He kind of sucked at explaining stuff. As long as you showed up to class, did homework, and wrote the essays on class you should be fine. I got C+ on all essays and i got a B- in the class. BE ON HIS GOOD SIDE! if you miss class make sure you email him why and he'll understand.
He was okay. Try to be on his good side - go to class, participate once in a while in class, be nice, go to office hours sometimes and you'll get a good grade. Only wrote 3 essays and gave us a lot of time to work on them. Class was kind of a drag though. He's generally a nice teacher.
Nice guy but the class was such a drag. Plus side was that we only had 3 essays including the final paper. Problem was he contradicts himself with prompts and such. Class was useless and didn't really learn anything. Nice guy with an interesting sense of humor but class time was pointless. Attendance is somewhat mandatory. Not really an easy A.
He is the worst professor I have ever encountered. I am a straight A student (omitting this class). Didn't learn one thing and his lectures were extremely confusing. Don't expect an A. We only had 3 essays though, which was a plus. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
He is a generally nice person; however his has a weird sense of humor and is extremely liberal. He will have no problem making you feel stupid in front of the class. We had three essays the whole semester and they were extremely difficult and confusing. He is vague in class and less helpful at office hours. It is an impossible A. DON'T TAKE HIM.
NOT AN EASY A. That's a fact. Has his good and bad. Good because he is extremely understanding and laid back. Bad because he is not very helpful with the development of the essays. Instructions tend to be vague which leads to a lot of confusion.Personally, I do not recommend him.
I took him a year ago and have been meaning to do a review on Copeland ever since. I LOVED HIM. Such a cool dude with a sarcastic sense of humor. He can come off as an ass but he means well and he's HOT. Even if he does wear crocs. Easy class if you put forth a tiny bit of effort. You can definitely argue your grades if you have legit reasons.
Professor Copeland is a very sarcastic and his first impression makes him out to be mean, which he isn't. Attendance is not 100% mandatory but he learns names by the first class, there is no hiding. His papers are interesting but they do involve work. I would take him again, only in knowing how he teaches and grades. HE IS HOT.
He's pretty sarcastic most of the time. Class is not hard to get a B in. Only has three essays and no final. If you listen during his lecture then you know exactly what to write in your essay. Office hours are super helpful and good one-on-oneduring the 50 minute class. VERY HARD GRADER when it comes to essays.
I can't argue against what others are saying about him but he really is a great teacher and is really passionate about what he teaches. I really loved this class mostly because of how he interacts with the class and has us debate. He talks a lot but he knows what he's saying. It's not easy to get an A in this class though you will have to work hard
He's a good teacher. He explains in class what he wants in your essay. Pretty much discuss same topic every class, a little repetitive. Only 3 essays and no final. The workload for this class is medium but he's a difficult grader. He really makes sure that you understand the argument before you write your essay. Not too liberal or conservative.
Overall, he is a nice guy who is willing to help you with your papers. But he is a pretty hard grader and also isn't very clear about what he wants in papers. He tends to cancel class a lot and contradict himself when talking. He's a nice guy, but if possible, I'd avoid him.
Often unclear and a harsh grader. You can argue your grade and have it boosted slightly but not enough to get an A at the end of the course. He isn't very good at telling you what he wants, talking in circles until you nod and just figure it out alone. Also tries too hard to be your friend which can make you feel uncomfortable. Not Recommended
Super unclear and basically just rambles all class. He makes it impossible to get an A because he's such a hard grader. Don't take him
He is not as bad as everyone is making him out to seem. Yeah he may seem rude but he's just blunt. He is a tough grader but I learned a lot about my writing and how to improve it. He will help you if you ask for it. I liked the class and the way he teaches.
I thoroughly enjoyed Copeland as a professor. He takes points off for missing class but if you go to his office hours and actually talk to him he's a really cool guy. I learned a lot about my writing skills while taking his class. Taking him again in the fall!
Hes a super chill teacher. Very nice and clear. Throughout the class, there're 3 assignments, you're asked to read three texts and write 3 essay's. Don't be afraid if you don't understand the article because in class he discusses the text with students and clarifies what he wants in the essay. Keep in mind he's a harsh grader. Make use of office h
Cool guy but very harsh grader.
Super cool guy. 3 papers (projects), no tests, attendanceparticipation matters. If you meet with him in his office hours and get to know him he will be on your side. Second semester taking him, wish I could take him again!
Mr. Copeland is a really nice guy. If you go into office hours, he's willing to help. However, class is painful because he will reiterate things already said in previous lectures in different ways. He is intelligent, but this class is a bit of a drag because we only cover a little, but it feels like it goes forever. He's also a really tough grader.
He is a tough grader but gives you the chance to revise papers to help you because he wants you to pass with a good grade. He is very helpful when you need it and very willing to help out during office hours. Class is usually the same everyday but he will start marking you down if you skip class often.
Copeland is cool, really into what he's teaching which helps with learning. Very clear and always offering to help students during his office hours.
He is a nice guy, but he expects a lot out of you. It helps you become a better writer, but sometimes the work is just tedious. You should go to his office hours, it will boost your essay grades a lot!
He might seem mean at first, but once you attend office hour, you'll know that he is the most understanding and helpful professor at state.
Constantly contradicts himself when he is attempting to explain something. Very unclear expectations of you. Always finds flaws in your writing and never praises quality work.
Copeland is a great professor. If you are looking for an easy A, this is not your class because he expects you to put work and effort into your papers. Yes, he can be a tough grader, but you can go to office hours ask him for help whenever you need to and you can re-write your essays. He might not be easy, but he helps you become a better writer.
He was a very good teacher. Although he expected a lot, he did provide means and opportunity to alleviate the load of work. He gave out three projects over the semester and little breaks in between. Read and take notes on the book to help with the papers. Pushes you to do well, can go off on tangents so be ready. Go to office hours, ask a lot.
At first I didn't like Copeland too much but then he grew on me. He has a quirky sense of humor that you'll probably end up finding hilarious which makes class more entertaining. Show up to class, cuz even though he doesn't always take attendance the discussions in class REALLY help your paper. Would definitely take him again
No matter what you write, it won't be good enough, so just don't expect an A. That being said, definitely ask for help as he will give you some decent feedback. Blunt, passionate about his job, a smart guy, and sometimes can be pretty funny as well. Just don't expect an easy time.
He's disorganized so if you're one of the last papers he grades, don't expect much feedback. Tough grader but allows rewrites. Wants specific things but isn't clear about what exactly so 200 is hard unless you had him for 100 and have had time to get to know what he likes and dislikes in writing.
This class was super frustrating. Most days you show up to class and there's no lesson plan, he just tells you to work on your paper. He's a really tough grader, with high expectations, but he's not very clear with those expectations. Not the most difficult class, attendance goes a long way with him, so show up, you'll be bored but you'll pass.
Professor Copeland was awesome. Solid professor. Makes sure he's making himself clear and tells you exactly what he expects from your papers. No book assigned, mostly just gives you readings on BB and has you go find other readings. I highly recommend Professor Copeland
Most aggravating teacher I have ever had. There is very little direction in the class, he cancels numerous classes to grade papers and because he is "just so busy". I don't think he has every given out an A paper and he is never satisfied with your work, even though he gives you no real directions. Save yourselves and find another teacher.
Difficult teacher, he cares about his students but is unclear about his expectations with the papers. You need to attend class and write about the points he talks about in class. Very Very tough grader with papers. Hard class
Good Professor, but pay attention or he won't like you. Helps you out a lot with your papers and grades nicely!
He's a really tough grader, which actually discouraged my ongoing love for writing. His lectures were boring and I didn't get much from them even though I take amazing notes because he'd go off on tangents and hop around with ideas. When I would go in for office hours for help, he would criticize my writing overly harsh.
Had him for both 100 and 200. It took time for me to know what he wanted on the paper. Classes are very important he goes over readings during class so you can understand it better. He really cares about your grade and always willing to help. If you read and listen to what he wants you should have a good grade :) Final paper was fairly easy too!
It definitely took me some time to figure out what he wanted on the essays, so my first couple weren't amazing, but after going into his office hours it helped me a lot. I would recommend showing up for class because you go over the readings and help you analyze them. A good teacher though because he does care and wants you to do well!
This was an easy, great RWS class. He gives amazing feedback and the whole class is only graded on 4 papers that are nicely spread throughout the semester.
Great professor, really takes the time to help the students understand his material and shift them in the right direction. Makes each class meeting direct and informational. He continuously makes the effort to reach out to struggling students or answer any questions. This class is easy and straight forward all you have to do is listen and write.
I am a terrible writer, always have been and seemingly always will be, but thoroughly enjoyed this class. Copeland is one of the few writing teachers that will read your paper thoroughly and give you good feedback. Also gives a lot of time to draft and discus in class. Also just a good guy, do recommend.
This guy is the type that tries hard in his lectures during class but half of the time I can tell he doesnt have anything useful or educating to say. All class he repeats instructions of certain assignments and asks "Is that clear". When asked for more detail, would say "Depends" vaguely and talks about how he wants to buy a feminist a coffee.
I consider myself a bad writer and after taking Professor Copeland class, I have became a better writer. He takes the time to meet with students one on one . I love that because you to get to work on issues that you have & became a better writer. if you want to learn how write take him. I love this class and the way Professor Copeland teaches!
He was trying to do a hybrid (online/in class lecture) Unfortunately, I paid for an in class lecture. He said that we could walk in to his office for further explanation, that was true but 30 minutes are not enough if you are going once a week or even less. He didn't know how to explain. I could enjoy a beer with him though but not as my professor
Great professor. Long lectures, but not to heavy on the homework or projects. Great guy. Would recommend.
Copeland is a good teacher. The class is pretty simple. 3-4 papers & weekly journal assignments for homework. He doesn't follow the syllabus so be warned (I was really confused). If you do the work you earn the grade, he is fair. E-mail him with questions, he will help! Go to office hours & have him review paper, very helpful. I would take again.
It is possible to do okay in this class if you do what he says but it is almost impossible to understand exactly what he wants because he is always changing up what he wants. Additionally, he assigns alot of "homework" but never checks it or asks about it ever again. He does offer good feedback however
Highly recommend this professor, his assignments are pretty reasonable and he treats this course as a hybrid class meaning nearly half of them are "at home work" days. He's super personable and funny and you will enjoy his lectures.
If you're not the best at writing or if you're new to the American way of writing papers (like myself), I would not recommend this class. He isn't clear on what he wants and doesn't really teach you how to write your paper. Definitely a tough grader.
This is English so you will have to read & write. With that said he is willing to help if you talk to him. He goes over readings & guidelines, which are pretty flexible, as he wants you to be you as a writer. If youre having difficulty, he is really accessible & truly cares. But if you dont make the effort to communicate thats on you. Hes great
He is very understanding and he lectures very well. Always gives good feedback, attending meetings with him is very helpful. He is somewhat a tough grader but you do learn a lot from his class
Doesn't know how to grade. He actually looked at me, told me I had one of the best papers he had ever seen, and then gave me a "B" on it. Because of one sentence he didn't like. So if you don't like your GPA or you enjoy re-writing papers 500 times over, take his class.
No matter how bad or how good you are at writing expect a C. He won't fail you but at the same time, he will give you feedback that your grandma could've given you. If you take this class you will get the same grade if you talk about butterflies rather than spending your time doing it right.
Professor Copeland cares about his students and always replies back to question, but sometimes he gives off a rude vibe. There are 3 projects where in one of them you have to record yourself giving a lecture. The class journals help your grade, but he is picky on the final projects. He is an okay teacher, I had to take the class because of the WPA.
He doesn't really teach the class, but reiterate what was already said. He also extremely tough grader. He was always 5 minutes late to class, sometimes longer. Wasted some days just by having us sit around and compare papers or wait for him to look over homework. Not an easy class, but only 4 writing assignments.
he yelled at me about my writing and made me feel so bad, i had to hold back tears in his office. on my next essay, he said it was one of the best he had ever read and gave me a 90.. i wonder what it takes to get a solid A paper. i felt good about the 90 still but it's so messed up to treat your students badly simply for needing improvement.
Very egotistical and extremely harsh with grading. He doesn't care about anything other than what he thinks is right. Makes you do A LOT of unnecessary work and acts like you're illiterate. It's as if he enjoys making students feel bad and giving them bad grades... my least favorite class at SDSU. Really sucked. (I had a 4.0 GPA and he ruined it.)
I really hate this man. Worst professor I had at SDSU by far. Hes incredibly condescending, demoralizing, and threatening. He talks to you like your stupid. He told us he was going to come at us and get us on multiple assignments. I had to hold back tears meeting with him over zoom. Hemingway could take this class and not get an A. AVOID.
Allowed students to make assignment topics things they were interested in. Can be a tough grader at first but just wants to give you a good understanding of what he wants. ANSWER EVERY PART OF PROMPT. Mandatory discussion boards w peer editing.
I would highly recommend you taking his class. He cares about his student, give chances to make out the writing. He posts weekly recording lecture help you understand the materials. I liked his class a lot, I would definitely take him again in future. Thank you
I recommend this professor! I really enjoyed his lectures! He gave great explanations about the assignments. He cares about his students and wants them to succeed! This class helps you become a better writer! Plus his sarcasm is funny.
Instead of giving feedback he just points out the mistakes you do and doesn't help you correct them. So unhelpful. Stay away!
I loved this class! As someone who isn't the best at writing essays, Mr. Copeland provided me with amazing feedback that helped me thrive in his class. I got an A on all of my essays! The topics he gives are also so interesting and make writing essays enjoyable.
He cares about you becoming a better writer, and wants you to succeed in the class. As long as you are willing to put in the work, that is. He is very accessible to reach outside of class, and will give you helpful pointers on assignments to get the best possible grade! Definitely recommend choosing him as a professor if you have the option!
If you want a higher grade on your essays, I highly recommend going to Prof Copeland's lectures as he goes into depth about the texts and essays. He is a really easy teacher to get a hold of outside of class, and he gives great feedback on your text. He really helps structure your essay better during conferences, so I would also go to those.
Professor Copeland is awesome! The class discussions were always interesting and he prepares you well for the papers. He is also very understanding to each student's needs, and makes it a goal to get to know them!
Mr. Copeland was one of my favorite professors I've had. He cares about you and how you do in the classroom and actually makes time to meet with you and discuss your papers. Take him, you won't regret it, as long as you work he will help you.
Professor Copeland was great. His feedback was comprehensive which made me a stronger writer. He was also very lenient with me as he gave me an additional extension because I was sick.
He is a decent professor he is just a tough grader. His feedback on assignments can be confusing, but he is always open to meeting with you to discuss them.
Copeland is a nice guy that cares about his students and will always meet with you and clarify things. He does grade pretty tough and if you don't show up to class regularly you will miss valuable information and he will call you out, although it is not mandatory. 3 essays throughout the year with other small, easy assignments for points.
Take him! He cares about you and what you have to say. He is always open to talk about your papers and what you can approve on. He is a super down to earth guy and super nice.
he sucks he is horrible do not take him. he grades hard and does not tell you how to fix your errors and just points them out.
Good professor but his feedback was confusing. His grading gets hard the further into the semester. He is extremely specific so if English is your second language get ready to hear his critique. He says lectures aren't mandatory but checks to see if you've been watching them on time. Towards the end of the semester he doesn't answer emails.
Prof. Copeland loves to get the class talking, and really cares about your opinions. He's very clear about what he wants out of the few papers you write, and his directions are easy to follow. He is definitely a tougher grader than most, so expect about 5 points lower than you think you did on each paper, but his feedback is really great.
Mr.Copeland's class was a difficult one for me. You only write three papers throughout the semester, & he is kind of a harsh grader. You'll probably be lost if you don't attend class when he speaks about the articles you read. However, his email is always open for any questions you may have, whether it's on the articles or the essay which is nice.
Professor Copeland is a hard grader, however go to office hours and make sure he knows who you are because you will get some grace. He is very good at responding to emails and you only have like three papers.
My favorite professor this semester!! Did a great job explaining concepts in class and introducing essays. Held optional conferences, office hours, and was always willing to help or answer questions. You can tell he really cares about his students. He gives good feedback on essays and helped me improve my writing a lot. Reasonable with late work.
He was a very difficult grader but provided clear instructions and feedback that helped you improve. There was a lot of reading and sometimes the lectures dragged; however, I found attending the lectures really helped me in writing my essays.
Takes up the entire class talking to himself about each unit, get ready to read numerous amounts of articles for the 3 essays you will be writing. They aren't too bad..gives you enough time for them. Tough grader, great feedback. Allows 1 revision at the end of the year to boost your grade. Topics discussed included gender/race/class inequalities.
Majority of classes are group discussions and he takes up the entire class. There are a lot of reading that lead up to an essay at the end of each unit, so make sure to read and understand the material. He is a challenging grader, but it always followed with really helpful notes and he gives you a lot of time to work on your essays.
Tough Grader but if you go to class and get feedback from him you will do well
Prof. Copeland is a very difficult grader when it comes to essays, so whatever score you think you got on an essay you will probably have a score below that. There is three essays, and one is a group essay along with a small project that is presented. As long as you read his feedback on essays and pay attention, you should be fine. Cool dude :)
Prof Copeland is a cool dude, but a very tough grader. He rambles a lot, so it can sometimes be hard to understand him. I recommend talking to him alone to get feedback and insight on what he wants for papers. Two of the three papers were on education and gender; the third was a group project with a group presentation. Not easy, but not too hard.
Tough grader when you write essays but gives good feedback on how to improve. Essays topics aren't that bad they are just lengthy to write. He responds to emails very quick and explains topics very well. He does ramble a bit but overall great professor. I struggle in English but this class has helped me improve.
Really tough grader but gives good feedback on essays. He explains the prompts and readings in class really well but can ramble sometimes. He's a cool guy, responds to emails very quick.
There are three essays throughout the semester and prompts can be a little confusing along with the readings. He is a tough grader on your essays but gives good feedback. He goes over every reading we have to do and it's helpful. Pay attention and take good notes when he lectures it helps with the essays. Overall pretty chill professor.
Three essays throughout the semester and gives about 3-4 weeks to complete them. Don't procrastinate on them. He's a really tough grader but gives good feedback to improve. Reply to emails and is accessible during office hours. He's cool, if your struggling in his class talk to him he will help you.
Chill and nice professor, gives three essays for the semester. Accessible outside class replies to emails and does conferencing to help with essays. He is a tough grader but it helps you improve.
Not bad class, you write three papers and he can be sometimes tough at grading but he's a cool teacher and nice person to talk to
Pretty chill dude. Was understanding with personal schedules and very flexible with deadlines. A lot of reading and his lectures are important because he goes over the entire text and what he wants you to focus on. Stay on top of reading and do not procrastinate the writing, he will do random checks to make sure you are actually doing it.
Professor Copeland is very straightforward & explains what is expected from you as a student. He is pretty empathetic towards grading however it is quite a lot of writing especially while taking other heavily weighted courses. I would recommend if you're not lazy. if you do the work and make an effort you'll get an A- at least.
Professor Copeland was a good professor until I felt ignored due to my race. Despite my efforts to participate, I was often overlooked. I had to retake the RWS100 course with another professor and easily passed with an A.
Professor Copeland is a tough but fair grader who provides great feedback to help you improve your writing. The essays can be challenging, but using resources like unstuck study alongside the lectures and office hours makes this class manageable.
I can't stand this class, I always dread going to it. Matthew Copeland will interrupt students in the middle of their point to make his own point. The instructions he gives on Canvas for assignments are convoluted and unclear. It feels like assignments are pointless at times and they're just busy work. Personally, I find him annoying.
Mr. Copeland likes to talk a lot and this often puts us behind with assignments. There are only 3 papers but the outlines are extensive; however, I felt that this helped me write my essays and they took less time. He gives lots of worktime in class but I felt that I had no motivation to go because I was caught up with work.
4 modules, 3 of them are writing based. a letter of recruitment, a 10 min tedtalk/lecture you must record on a topic, analysis of a scholarly article's ethos. he is behind on grading and the lectures posted is him rambling on and on. i was excited for this class but he has high expectations. he doesn't really teach, relies on past students examples
This was definitely a challenging class. He grades hard, as he considers a B as good work. He is easy to contact outside of class, and offers many chances for feedback. He does talk a lot, and can be mildly condescending and passive-aggressive at times. Not horrible though.
He is a pretty chill teacher. He yaps a lot during the class, and lectures can get boring. Make sure to read the articles he assigns because he will check in to see what you've learned + you'll be graded on the check ins. Pretty tough grader on papers we do. But he does give us time to work during class and allows late work if needed.
Very good professor, but very biased in what he is looking for in essays, very specific writing style. Definitely go to class. he lays out what topics he is looking for in your essay and provides good feedback. His "journal entries" section of the class is very helpful at guiding you through your paper process. Fun class overall.
He's a hard teacher, but he gave really good feedback on how to improve my papers. He also did give more work than I would've liked.
This class took a lot of effort, but he cared a lot for his students and was willing to put in time and effort to help us. Really great professor.
Mr. Copeland was a great professor overall. There is reading required, but they're all interesting, valuable, and easy to get through. He's accessible outside of class and super accommodating. I loved his class and will be taking RWS 200 next semester :)
