First math class after 5 years. This teacher is enthusiastic, clear, and does a great job. I would definitely take another class with him.
Took Trigonometry over the summer and Matthew Cotter made the class so easy understand. I aced everything until we got to identities. This was ultimately my downfall and I believe it was due to my lack of effort. All in all, he understood where we were coming from as students and worked with us. Best teacher I've had yet in college.
He's a young professor but he's a bit out of touch with how to entertain a class. If you're not a stud at math, i recommend taking a different professor. When he lectures, I kind of get the vibe like "you should already know this" from him. Not my favorite. His tests are 75 points with about 13 questions so if you miss two you're at a B already!!
Prof. Cotter was awesome. He's super passionate about what he teaches, knows the material well, does a great job at explaining everything and answers everybody's questions. Doing the homework helps reinforce the material and is a great way to study for tests. Not difficult, but do have to put in effort to succeed, as with any math class.
The homework is at least ten times harder than the exam. He responds to emails within minutes. He really doesn't like people talking in his class. He doesn't pull any tricks on the exams. He gives a clear outline of the types of problems that will be on the exam
I love Professor Cotter's classes! He is really passionate about math and is very encouraging! He is always recommending things to do to bring up our grades, and always wants to help! In class, if you miss an explanation, he will stop and go over it again for you. He teaches all the different forms of the problems, which is really great!
horrible professor. he expects you to get the concept right away and gets annoyed if you don't understand it. his tests are horrible and he's just overall a terrible teacher, absolutely worst semester ever because of him.
Cool dude, tells you what will be on the exams. Tough grader. Deducts points for writing your answers seperate from work, deducts points for anything he can. Lectures are pretty straight forward, he doesn't answer HW questions during class. He's easy to pass but HARD to get an A because of his Nazi grading. No calculator allowed for this class.
Here is an example of what a teacher should be. Professor Cotter really strives to help his students succeed. His lectures are very clear. Although Calculus can be challenging he has a great way of simplifying it and making it seem smoother. Ive taken him for calc 1 and 2. Test are very fair, and he give you study guides. And he loves Nintendo
I had him for math080. He always answered my emails. i would frequently ask him to update me on my grade and would tell me what I need to do to pass the class with an A. Got a B which isn't bad. He knows how to lecture. Recommend!!
Honestly the best professor I have ever had. Amazing lectures that are extremely easy to comprehend. Math 180 is not an easy topic to grasp, but with Cotter is was.
He's an amazing professor. You have to put the effort into the class but he will do his best to help you. I wish he was my professor for ever math class I will have in the future.
Professor Cotter will tell you what will be on the test; however he is vague on which problems and the difficulty. HE IS A TOUGH GRADER IT WAS RIDICULOUS. He has no problem giving students a B or C, in fact he EXPECTS IT. There are few points obtainable in the class. Calc1 only had 500 points, 450 points were test. INSANE HOMEWORK TOO! BTWN 200-300
Very thorough in his teaching style and has a very specific but useful way of organizing his steps (which he strongly emphasizes). Great professor overall and has true passion for his field
Cotter is a great professor! Very thorough lectures and passionate about subject. Def wants his students to pass and succeed. Grade consisted of homework and tests scores. Study from homework problems and lecture examples and you'll do fine. Def would take again! :)
Avoid Cotter like the plague. He will rush through lectures. During FINALS week, Professor Cotter rushed through 3 of the hardest sections of Calculus 3 only 2 days before the final exam. People asked questions, but he gave vague responses, no one could show up to office hrs because they were taking their finals during them. Final: 47% class avg
Passing his class, even getting an A in his class DOES NOT, by a long shot mean you'll be ready for the next course. He skips so much material because it's "too hard" and if you take calc 2 with a different professor, you're screwed. He avoids explaining things because it's "too difficult" so he does examples and expects you to regurgitate on exam
Explains Math extremely well, I loved taking him.
Avoid Cotter if you can. He has the best intentions to teaching Math courses, but he is just honestly bad at it. He can be condescending in lecture and very rarely answers questions concisely. He doesn't require attendance, but you'll want to be there for each lecture because he has a very particular way of doing things. Grade is completely tests.
Only homework and 3 exams go in the grade book. If you mess up on one exam, must do well on other two to get a good grade. Inconsistent with grading. Gives higher grades to those who frequently speak with him. Has a specific way of teaching, so go to class. If using another method on the test, he will deduct points.
Went to his office hrs. Asked him if he could explain a concept but he was busy so instead just gave me his laptop to look at the hw. He missed two of his other office hrs (even after email) and on my 4th visit he came in, put his stuff down, then walked out to get lunch. Wants things done a certain way and will subtract points if done differently.
Out of all the profs here Taber and this dude are in a dif league than the rest. Cotter actually takes his time to write out his own notes & that's how you know he's a real one. He explains so well you understand the first time. put in the work and you'll get the grade. I respect the emphasis on professionalism - our own mathematical Walter White.
He explains the concepts very well so even someone who's bad at math like me could understand it.
Wondering if he ever smiled. His class work have numerous mistakes. He allows himself to say he will call out sick when a holiday is coming for him to have a longer break... yet allows himself to regularly talk about professionalism.
Very rude when asked for help. Treat yourself: do not take this professor.
His teaching style is all over the place - he'll be showing us one thing and then move on to something else. If you have the option to take someone else, DO IT.
Amazing teacher! Shows examples step by step. Does give a lot of homework and there are no quizes. I would not miss a class since calculus is a tough concept. Math is hard and teaching it is harder but Professor Cotter is both good at math and great at teaching it. I will try to take all my remaining math courses with him.
Huge amount of hw for the class. Impossible. Hes rude. Take someone else if you can
He obviously loves math. His lectures are very clear and organized. He is very happy to help his students and his tests are very fair. He is very clear on the grading and emphasizes proper notation. Overall, I am very happy I took him for my first calculus class. He is an awesome teacher.
Pretty standard math teacher. He goes off topic and rants too much about how much he likes math though.
Im in Calc II right now; its one hell of a course. BUT, Ive never ever had a professor so GOOD and SKILLED at teaching math in my whole college career. There are no words to describe the neatness, clarity and level of understanding this professor relays to his students. He is simply amazing. Calc II is hard, but he makes it so enjoyable!! :) ty!
I took this class during intersession but I felt I learned that I learned more during this time than in regular semester. He is very passionate in what he teaches and will make learning the material straight forward. Overall an enjoyable class.
Good Teacher Love Cotter
Uses outdated techniques/methods and focuses more on rambling about what he is about to lecture than the lecture itself. Fair grader but stay away if possible.
Great professor! You can tell he truly cares about his students and provides good examples. Says exactly what type of problems will be featured on the tests and does similar ones in class. Taking him again for Math 185 (Calc 2) because he is that good. Lectures are great and really just wants the students to understand and grow.
If you are a math expert, and you are able to deal with boredom, then this is the route to go.
I would highly recommend Professor Cotter. You must show up to class no ifs, ands or buts about it. Writing notes is a must in his course. I would even suggest bringing different colors pens to write with. He is very detailed with his notes and you should definitely review the notes after class and while doing the homework. He is a great professor!
I highly recommend Professor Cotter, I actually like math now after a life time of hating it, he is an amazing teacher, and I am exited to continue and take on the upcoming math classes. If math is not one of your strengths, take his class! His notes and lectures are very organized and easy to comprehend.
my go to math professor. He really connects with his students and loves to help. only reason i am passing math is because of him. I wish he taught the next class. Really cares about each of his students and helps you set up a study guide for the test. He's the best
Mr. Cotter is a great person and is motivating but his time management made the class stressful at the end since we had lecture the last day before the final without any review time. He tells you the type of questions that are going to be on the exam but then changes the way he asks them which made the exams difficult but grades fairly.
I transferred to UC Davis after taking him for Calc 1 and 2. His lectures are usually easy to follow and his passion for math was really inspiring. Best of all, he is considerably easier than similar teachers (i.e. skips curve sketching in Calc 1 and doesn't require you to know exactly when to use each integration technique in Calc 2). Take him!
Mr Cotter is nice. The notes you need is what he writes on the board. It is very straight forward, no crazy twists or anything like that. The tests are based on the homework. Textbook is used for the homework, no reading though. I like the way he explains math and would definitely take him again. Just work hard to make sure you understand the ideas
he was a fine teacher as long as you did the homework. Everything on the notes are in the homework and everything on the homework is on the test. as Long as you study, you'll get an A. His lectures are very long but just get through it and put your head down in doing the work and you'll be fine
Math has always been my worst subject and I was intimidated by taking Math080. Mr. Cotter is very passionate about Math and his students and it shows. He is knowledgeable on other subjects and is able to explain certain things in ways that are easy for people to understand. I wasn't able to take him for Math171 but I'm excited for 180 with him.
Professor Cotter is the best professor at SCC. He can make anyone fall in love with math. He is so inspirational and helpful outside of class. His tests are exactly like the notes so just practice from there. Don't even worry about the homework, his tests are a copy of the notes. His classes are so interesting and you could tell he loves his job!
Once posted I wouldn't take this professor again, but had to because no others teachers were available for Calc 2. Very strict grader, even on homework. Tests are heavily weighted if you do bad on a single test, good luck passing the class. No way to make up for bad scores.
His lectures are good and detailed, but if you take his class make sure to enroll in the math center for extra help. Although there's a lot of homework, it's only worth 10% of the grade. The other 90% is based off the exams. He hates cellphones, advanced calculators, and even the most quiet whisper from the back row of the class.
This class is very hard, but Cotter makes it amazing. Take him if you are a STEM major.
As someone who has always struggled with math courses, Professor Cotter made math clear. He "dumbed it down" and offers extra credit!
I have always gotten As in math. I signed up for his class bcz it was the only one available, I hated it. He talks to us about professionalism but he cant even keep his own lectures on track. You have to do everything the way he wants it or you fail. He makes you write down every single step and will mark you down completely if you even skip one.
Professor Cotter is an amazing lecturer and does a great job at teaching with the new online format. Hes accessible via email and responds REALLY FAST. He also is in the Mathlab if you need help, his tests are easier than the homework but everything he tests is taught in the lecture exactly the same. Hes well versed in his field highly recommend
He's a good teacher, but if you do badly on one example your practically screwed, his Tests are 90% of your grade and no extra credit. I would only recommend him if you consider yourself a top-level student who regularly gets A grades.
He's AMAZING. Makes calculus way easier than it could be. How? He writes the entire course from scratch. You don't need a book. His lectures are passionate, engaging, and directly tied to tests and hw, which is only about 1-3 problems per assignment so not overwhelming at all. Best teacher I've ever had. 12/10 recommend.
Calc ll is a very difficult class, but cotter made the process very straight forward and easy. He doesn't sugarcoat how challenging the course is, but is very supportive and caring throughout the class. I honestly believe he is one of the best math professors because he is able to explain such a difficult subject very well. Highly recommend.
I took Calc I from Professor Cotter through remote live classes over zoom. I am not the best at math but he made hard concepts easy to understand and answered every question asked during lectures, no matter how simple. He also held office hours multiple days a week if you needed help with something. Super invested in helping his students succeed!
he is all over the place during lecture
I was not a huge fan of math until I took this class, mainly because I had a hard time understanding the concepts. The lectures are very straight forward and he teaches you everything you need to know for the homework and exams in the lecture.
made calculus make sense. id pay extra to get this math teacher again
Cancelled about 6 classes this semester, but preaches heavily about professionalism. Hes passionate about his subject, but not student equity. I didnt find him approachable, and Im all about class participation and visiting office hours. I had to teach myself and rely heavily on MSC, because I didnt feel comfortable asking him questions.
He is one of the BEST math teachers I've ever had! His lectures are super organized and he is very inspirational. He was a tutor before so he understands students' struggles and is always willing to further explain. A really nice guy, patient with students, and very passionate about teaching.
Professor Cotter is for sure the best professor I've had so far. He explains math really well and is very organized. He also doesn't sugarcoat the difficulty of the class.
His grading is pretty vague; does not include feedback in work. Don't waste your time with this professor; if you can, stick to a professor that is precise and straightforward.
This was my third time taking calculus and professor Cotter made it all make sense. The way he teaches math is like no other math teacher I've had. I would 100% recommend him to anyone who struggles with math. He truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Do the HW and write down all the notes and the exam's are super fair. :)
Terrible teacher!!!!!!!! No extra credit, endless homework, senseless exams. Stay way!!
Professor Cotter is the best math teacher I have ever had. He is so clear in his explanations and you can tell he truly cares about his students. He is professional and friendly. Take him!
You can tell that Professor Cotter truly demonstrates a passion for Mathematics. I am currently in his Math171 class and his lectures are clear and easy to understand. He is the best math teacher I have ever had and I will be taking him for my other extended math classes. Take Mr. Cotter, highly recommend!
Easily the best professor I've ever had. The only reason he isn't 5/5 is because the courses he teaches are extremely difficult in nature, but he does as good a job as possible at explaining. No extra credit, but homework and exam questions are exactly what was covered in class. VERY organized as well. I can't image someone explaining math better.
Professor Cotter is amazing at what he does, I enjoyed calc 2 from him. For his teaching style, it's sitting in a class, and taking notes while he explains things along the way. He gives clear instructions and gives exam previews so you know what to expect; there is nothing that he will put on the exam that isn't on the homework or the lecture.
Had Mr Cotter for Math 150 summer online course. Mr Cotter's teaching style is super easy to follow along with and learn from, even over zoom. The best you could hope for from standard lecture-style teaching. Just pay attention. He had a family emergency halfway through the course and still managed to finish the class, big respect to him for that.
Took calc1 with Prof. Cotter online during the summer and he is the best! He is pretty strict with grading because he wants you to gain a sense of professionalism but he is the best at teaching calc. You can tell he really loves teaching and that he's passionate about it. He always makes sure you understand the material during class.
Had Cotter for Calc 2 and Calc 3, he helped me so much and I found that he was the best professor for me in math. I had a C in Calc 1 but got an A in Calc 2 as well as a high B in Calc 3. He was super helpful during office hours and just made time for you to understand the lectures. Wish he could be my professor for other math classes.
An amazing professor, truly does not get better than him!
He is a great professor he is very a straight forward is teaching method is awesome unfortunately I had to drop his class The beginning of the semester I was not trying which really affect my grade but it was my fault not his.
His way of teaching was amazing as I hates math and was so nervous for this course because I am not strong in math. Although it was hard he made me like math and going to class. His notes and exactly like the hw and copy and paste with different numbers for tests.
Honestly the best math teacher I've taken. He makes hard concepts easy to understand like he's some kind of wizard or something. His lectures are God sent. So straightforward and easy to comprehend. His view is forward thinking, and his tests are exactly like the homework. This should be your #1 choice for a good teacher.
He makes things so easy to understand bc he writes the course himself. His teaching style takes a little getting used to, but I love his thoroughness as he will show you the "twists"/variations of every single calc problem that will be on the Hw/test. If you can, use an iPad & Apple Pencil/stylus for the class. Makes stem classes sooo much easier.
Great teacher! You can't get much better than him. His attention to detail is amazing. However the class is graded by very few things so don't fck up on too many or you'll be screwed.
Never have I had such an amazing math professor. First time taking him and he made us do our homework very professionally, and ill never do it any other way going forward. Super passionate about this subject, to some it may be a concerning amount. Amazing lectures and I personally understood everything at all times. Honestly the idea math professor
Cotter is in my opinion an excellent prof. His lectures are incredibly well organized, his homework reinforces the concepts found in the notes very well. There are almost no situations where you need outside resources (Chegg, textbook youtube). Tests match up to lecture and homework well. Responds to emails incredibly quickly. You can do it!
Professor Cotter is very lecture heavy, with a light homework load. The test questions are taken directly from class notes and homework. He grades your hw on neatness and structure which can take some adjustment however in the long run it definitely helps with organization. Lastly he consistently emphasizes the importance/value of mathematics.
I love Professor Cotter, most clear professor I have had. The first two tests were not a problem but third test onwards was when it got drastically hard. You need to ensure that your study habits can ensure a smooth transition from dead easy to really hard but his lecture and homework clearly follows the tests. Highly recommend!
If you're a math major- he's the class to take. Lectures are mandatory (though he records them)- TAKE LOTS OF NOTES. The examples mirror the homework extremely well. He's extremely passionate about math, to the point where it actually freaks me out a little bit. If that's not your cup of tea, find someone else.
As a high school student, I thought Professor Cotter had a nice way of doing his lectures but like some comments said, he is VERY passionate about math. I personally thought that his passion stifled up my focus a bit but I still think the course was well planned out and he was very flexible with my summer schedule.
Some of the clearest and most concise math lectures I've had the pleasure in being a part of. Professor Cotter is the "english professor" of the math world that takes time to give background on historical and scientific significance to the math journey we encountered.
Calculus is a complex subject, but Cotter is difficult. He provides you with most of the tools you need to thrive in his class, except when you ask for help. He is one of those stem professors who degrades you for asking for clarification (yells at you or tells you to look at the lectures to not repeat himself). Be sure to ask on a good day.
A GREAT math instructor. He explains things very well! Be sure to do the homework as you learn each section because its a lot. I did everything last min and I have a low B. 4 homework assignments (due day of test), 4 tests, 4 quizzes. He records his lectures! Tbh it's not bad just study in advance. Tests are exactly like the homework and lec. notes
His lectures are all recorded so its helpful to go back and rewatch. But be prepared to watch a lot outside of class as he often misses and and posts a makeup lecture. Also calc 3 starts off really easy but then it all piles up in the end so stay on track with hw and use to study.
Free textbook given for class but not used or needed as the Professor's lectures are amazing. Homework assignments are not due weekly. Multiple assignments are turned in the day of major tests which gives flexibility. Must apply yourself to pass. Combines traditional learning with new age technology. Professor is charismatic during lectures.
Prof. Cotter is really nice and you can tell he's very passionate about math and teaching. He misses class quite frequently, which I would have no problem with if he provided a make-up lecture, but sometimes he doesn't because he tries to cram it in the following lecture. This caused the class to ramp up in material near the end.
VERY passionate about math. Tends to go on rambles and teaches at a slower pace, but that makes it a bit easier to catch up on work if you fall behind. If you take notes and understand what is going on in the lecture and homework, you will be fine. Pre-calc is a hard course but Cotter makes it as easy to digest as possible.
He makes everything simple and easy to understand. His exams are great because he tells us exactly what kinds of questions will be on them and how many. Only thing is he grades homework a bit harshly which is kind of annoying but other than that 10/10 guy and chill. Although there's no extra credit so what you get is what you get.
2-3 hour long lectures on zoom that are recycled from Covid time. His canvas organization is horrible. Has his own calendar pdf you are expected to follow instead of placing it in a week to week showcase of what is to do like every other professor does. His discussions only last a day so good luck on replying to two classmates.
He rambles for half of the lectures and each lecture is 2 and a half hours long, most of the exams are similar to the homework. All of his lectures are recycled and when you have questions his responses are bland and not helpful.
I took Cotter online for Math 171 over a summer. He was extremely clear and passionate in his lectures, all quiz/exams closely matched the homework and notes. He responds to emails quickly. Cotter is very well respected among his students for a reason, every semester I see his classes fill up right away, so register early. 10/10 would recommend!
Professor Cotter is one of the best teachers I've taken. He is very clear on what he expects in the tests and homework. His lectures mirror the homework, which mirror the tests so everything feels connected and nothing takes you by surprise. You can tell he is very passionate about math and calculus, which made his lectures much more fascinating.
The online lectures are 2-3 hours long with mostly rambling. They are just recycled zoom videos from quarantine. Cotter was not clear with how he wanted HW assignments to be submitted yet would mark down everything if it wasn't to his liking. Assignments would be due once a month which made it very hard to stay on track.
SAVE YOURSELF - He has 3 hour long lectures. NO extra credit whatsoever. I would submit homework and he would tell me that my graphs were too small even though it took half the paper. It also had to be a centimeter to the left or right depending on which lecture it is. Make sure to do his discussions on time or else your grade will DROP
DONT DO IT -Does not want his students to succeed, I was asking for him to give me extra credit in the class because I was on the verge of a B by 1% and he told me he does not want to discuss the matter. Pretty messed up because I needed a B or above. Take this as a sign not to take him. Thank me later when you drop it
Professor Cotter is passionate about math, which can be both a blessing and a challenge. His lectures can be lengthy, but he breaks down concepts well. Utilize resources like the free textbook, study sessions, and tools like unstuck ai to excel in this course.
Explains topics very well, makes Calc easy. Tests are very similar to HW so never any surprises. Very picky on structure. I've gotten everything right on tests but been marked down to a 90 because of "format". Like every test he finds something wrong with your format. But, this is a very easy class if you just know how to do the HW problems.
This guy is a control freak with a God complex. His grading is a game of arbitrary precision, and your GPA is the casualty. Miss a discussion deadline by a breath and your grade tanks. Completely unreasonable and inflexible. Avoid if you value your time, sanity, or academic success.
Cotter is extremely passionate about mathematics and calculus, but sometimes the lectures can drag. You will learn a lot, but it is an overall challenging class.
Professor Cotter is very passionate about calculus. He is VERY clear about what will be on the exams. You WILL NOT be surprised when you take them. The subject is not an easy one but if you put in the work you will pass. Lectures can be hard to get through but I hardly had to go back and look at recordings. He is very professional and respectable.
