Very uninteresting class because he does not take the time to explain anything, and is very unclear in his lectures. He really should take his time, since this subject isn't easy for everyone to learn.
VERY Boring class!!! I havent finished my semester with him though, but Im guessing its an easy A. Want more opinions? He taught in CSU Long Beach too.
He is very knowledgeable in his field. He gives a lot of fairly easy homework, just don't miss class and ask about what you don't understand. He'll help you and explain in as little time as possible. It's difficult information and not a class for the slacker, but not bad once you get the hang of it
Not a very good instructor at all, and doesn't take time to explain anything in detail. But his exams are a breeze. Just study all the handouts and study guide, and you'll be fine.
He is a good lecturer but the material is pretty dry.
THE PROF. IS AN INTELLECTUAL OF HIGHER ACADEMIA. HE IS EXTREMELY WITTY, METHODICAL, CLEAR AND VERY PROFOUND. FOR THOSE OF US WHO DO ASK QUESTIONS,AND ENGAGE IN DIALOGUE, IT IS ASTOUNDING, NOT TO MENTION MIND BLOWING, OF HIS SUPREME KNOWLDEGE IN THIS SUBJECT (LINGUISTICS). I AM TRULY MESMERIZED.
Good professor. Like the sense of humor. He is very smart and the tests are easy if you just study what he tells you to, it's right off all the homework and study guide he provides.
This class is pretty hard I don't know why people say its easy--he is funny though and seems like a nice person.
My friend told me to rate this prof as I sat in. He is very nice person and brilliant.
I don't understand the people saying that he doesn't explain the material. Are you even listening? He explains things until he's blue in the face. If these people still don't get it maybe they never will. This is an easy A if you pay attention.
I loved his class! Professor Davidson is very interesting give a lot of examples for what he is talking about. Definitely take his class if you are majoring in Linguistics.
New teacher, very very disorganized. Class structure has changed each semester. Does not return phone calls or e-mail. easy to listen to. The workbook (1st edition) has typos which makes it difficult to analyze the homework.
He has a monotone so it's difficult to stay awake during the class. He tends to digress a lot. Tests and quizzes are pretty easy if you read the articles he assigns.
he's a wonderful teacher but does seem to get side tracked easily. his tests are straight off the homework so if you do the work and understand the articles you should do fine.
He is a very boring and monotone guy. It is a hard class, and its hard to pay attention because he is so monotone. He doesn't seem to really care about the students because he comes from a different school. But I guess he was a pretty nice guy. I get mixed reviews from everybody
He's a really smart guy who obviously knows what he's talking about, but you can tell he thinks teaching a 100 class is boring. He has a dry sense of humor, which i personally like. Overall the subject was interesting, but the class was boring. The tests are easy if you read what your supposed to.
His class is very interesting. The bad thing about his class is that if u dont go to class one day you will miss out on a lot. but overall he is a good teacher and if you need help he is there to help you. the test and homeworks are pretty easy too.
I throughly enjoyed listening to Professor Davidson's lectures --- if you were somewhat intereted in what he had to say you would seriously enjoy the lecture. His tests were generally easy, you did have to study and understand the material however, it wasn't straight forward, you had to think, but i recommend taking him if you want to raise your
Dr. Davidson, your class is very interesting, I very much enjoy your lectures, and you definitely do not have a monotone voice :)
Hilarious and keeps it interesting. Available to students who have extra questions. Plays W.O.W.
Dr. Davidson is funny and intellectual. He takes time in and outside of class to clarify everything. To Dr. Davidson, the student comes first. Anybody who says differently has not tried. All I had to say was I'm not getting it (Linguistics). Dr. Davidson went into overdrive to help me and other students get it. Dr. Davidson is great! He rocks!
a nice guy but he has to deal with all these stupid people who just dont get it and slow everything down. difficult to pay attention b/c he has to go over everything twice. i hated the old ladies with a million questions.
This was a really enjoyable class. The subject matter was interesting and Davidson is really good at explaining everything; he has a dry sense of humor, which I personally like. The homework he gives is useful and the tests are easy if you have paid attention. Missing class is not recommended, but he's a good teacher, so why would you want to?
Very intresting class, turned into my favorite class ever.Doctor Davidson is a great teacher super nice, bright and care very very much about his student. Don't miss class, study your notes!I recommend this class to every one.Definitely not monotone:)
Best class all year. He has lots of patience especially since linguistics doesn't come second nature to most. Some students slow the pace down though. Purposeful excercises; not tedious busy work. I wish he taught intermediate linguistics. Now possibly minoring in linguistics; semi-converted. And Matt, if you weren't married, I'd so get with you.
I personally he's hilarious. I didn't think the class was hard, but I love linguistics. If you come to class and study your notes, you don't need the books. He's good about making sure you understand the concepts, and you can see him outside of class if you're still confused. As long as you're a logical person, this class is an easy A.
He is a really funny teacher.
Matt Davidson is such a great professor. He is very fair with grading and willing to meet with students whenever is the best time for them. He also has the best stories ever, he's so funny. puerem puella amat ;)
he's a good teacher, but just seemed like he was even kinda bored with his teaching. the test is pretty much a vocab test so know the terms, he said we were his transitional class so i don't know how it will be next semester. Interesting class though...just kinda hard to take in the morning.
He has an excellent way of breaking down the subjects dilineations.
Matt is pretty much the best teacher I've had. Maybe it's because we are both interested in similar things and we have a lot in common, but he makes everything relatable. That said, he's laughed ONCE this semester, and it was about syntax. Yeah, he's nerdy, but it's the cool kind of nerdy. -- Take him to ACTUALLY LEARN and get a good grade (A easy)
Seriously? How does everyone not give him a 5? Not only is he a great teacher who makes this stuff interesting, he is also super nice and caring even if he says he isn't. w/e. all that, and he isn't too bad on the eyes
i took him for both cultural and linguistics, and he is really a great teacher. take him for an easy a and also because a lot of the stuff he talks about is a lot more interesting than other anthro teachers. he is also pretty good lucking so its interesting in more than one way! definitely keeps my attention, thats for sure
I really enjoy being in Matt's class. We are about half way through the semester and he has been nothing but helpful and very thorough. He knows this is a new subject for most people and answers all questions (even if he is annoyed). He is really funny and I found myself laughing all the time and really wanting to go to class. Take this teacher!
ESL students will not pass for sure! it's just too hard. go over things way too fast with monotone, grades hard. the context in this class is already hard i dont understand why he dont take the time and go over it slower.poor hand writing too
The book is just a supplement to the info he gives you, so don't skip class. It's really not hard to get an A. Even if you're not enthralled by linguistics (?!), you might enjoy his quirky little tics and nerdy ways. Enjoys talking about WoW and his ex-girlfriends. Ladies take note: at the time of this rating, he is in fact single.
His sense of humor is dry that you cannot help but to laugh. He is FUNNY! Be sure to attend his lectures. Do your homework and you will be fine. He is willing to help you if you do not understand the information. You will need to study the study guide for tests. Trees? Ugh.
Avoid taking him at all costs!!!! by far the WORST class I've EVER taken at OCC!!! and it's really really HARD!! Not interesting at ALL!
OMG!!! by far the stupidest class I have ever taken!!! whatever you do, don't take this class!!!! it's gonna ruin your gpa big time!! Basically everyone failed the midterm =(
NOT HOT AT ALL!!!!! & HE IS NOT FUNNY!!!! I have no idea what people are saying!!! just don't take this class, it's not even worth the effort...I'm going to drop it soon!!
This guy is awesome, ignore all the bad commments, very easy class, not hard to grasp the information, first 2 weeks were pretty boring in my class but by the 3rd week the class got very interesting and he should his funny side, he has funny stories he refers back to when explaining linguistics, take him, easy class and great prof
honestly, if your not in your mid 40s, your definitely not going to get this class....the material is really hard, just avoid taking this class if you can
Don't take this class if your not a Linguistics major....your just not going to get anything he says!
A very hard and boring prof
This class just ruined my 3.8 GPA, I should've listened to my friends and dropped this class on the 1st day! The material is just too difficult and he has ZERO enthusiasm when he teaches. He's a monotone as well :(
This is a really hard class. He has ZERO enthusiasm when teaching and grades really hard. I'd rather take Humanities to fill this requirements
I hate this class....still regret enrolling in it!!
4 HW assignments, 1 quiz, and a midterm and final. Have to take this class eventually if you are an anth major. He isn't a bad teacher, but the subject can be hard to grasp at times. Easy to conceptualize but the problems can be difficult. Holds alot of review sessions which is cool. He loves linguistics, grades fairly, and has a few funny stories
I think it would be better if he, from the beginning of the class, explained the material clearly. if he had done that, then maybe, people would understand the course. But unfortunately, he didn't, which made half of the class drop, and the rest struggling to get an A. I would never take this class if I knew this in the beginning!
One of my easiest classes. The professor checks over hw at review sessions, which guarantees an A+ on all hw. He provides the answers to all study guide questions before an exam. If you find it difficult, ask questions. He was more than willing to explain every tiny thing until I understood.
he is one of the hardest professors at occ. Very boring to add to it. he assumes ppl. are cheating when he spot two similar answers-stupid 'law of ipa' when doing the hw so he jumps into conclusions before consulting with his students. he is very dull and has ZERO enthusiasm when teaching. The things you learn from this class --> u'll NEVER use!!
Prof Davidson is a little hard to like at first. He can come off a little hard to approach. After the first few weeks he came out of his shell and was very helpful. He even arranges study groups and will come and help with hw:) I wanted to drop at first since the material is so weird, but stayed and I got an A! Give him a try!
Prof. Davison is really a good teacher. IF you dont miss the class, you can understand most of what he's trying to say. i got A+ Take his class, if youre a nerd of Linguistics. As time goes by, he becomes more fun and cute...^^*
He is a very very easy teacher! The homework was extremely easy and it worthed a lot. He basically gives you the answers on the tests but you have to listen in class. The information was really easy to comprehend and it was interesting. He was funny and always reminded me of homer simpsons :) I usually fell asleep in that class bc it was around 4.
he's extremely boring!!!!
At first this class was pretty hard to follow, but after the second week I learned to take lots of notes and make sure that I was paying attention in class. His homework is very straight forward and worth a lot of points. He holds study sessions every time he assigns homework. Go to them, he goes above and beyond to help. He's a very nice guy.
Dr. Davidson is great. He can be a little hard to follow at first, but if you stick around, he makes a rather drab subject fun and interesting. I'd take him again for sure.
One of the easiest teachers I've had in my life! Makes the subject easy to learn and the in class discussions are pretty interesting. He's definitely boring to listen to alot of the times but this was still a good class.
This was one of the most interesting classes I've ever taken. The subject is easy and he is incredibly knowledgable but there aren't a lot of opportunities to make up points so you have to turn everything in. Don't take it if you're just trying to skate through it!
**Course Load: very manageable, interesting, requires effort. You can spend ~2hr/wk and easily get an 'A.'**Prof: intelligent, helpful (comes to school on FRI for opt'l study session), he is rather monotonous though. **Book not req'd.**I'd recommend this class to anyone interested in languages/communication/cultures.
I loved this class! He is very helpful and has a dry, sarcastic wit. IPA can be challenging but as long as you study it continuously, you'll be fine. An A is easy as long as you come to class and pay close attention. The only reason not take this class would be if you hate languages or English class. Then it might bore you to tears.
really really good prof but the subj can be hard. The good thing is that he makes it more approachable. Its impt to never miss a class cuz it will be difficult as we dont really use the textbooks for learning hwk are helpful and he has tutoring session...its hard to get an A in this class though
He knows that a lot of people are unfamiliar with this subject so he is very thorough. He has study sessions where he will sit with you and answer any and every question you have. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK! You will not need it. Interesting class even though he is a bit monotone.
most boring teacher EVER. he is so monotone. the material would be much more interesting if the teacher was energetic. i only took the class for a CSU requirement, NEVER AGAIN
When i went in the first day of class i thought this was going to be a difficult class to pass in. His test are exactly what are on the study guides. The class does require alot of memorization but if your good at memorizing things you should be fine. He is fairly funny especially when he brags about having the "red chili pepper status" on here lol
I think he was a excellent professor. Yes, the subject is dull if you don't like linguistics but I think he does a good job trying to make it interesting. He also tries to teach it in a way people can understand. He also available on Fridays if you needed extra help. Exams were right off the study guide.
I loved this class!! Linguistics is so interesting. At times I felt like he didn't want to be at school teaching. But I saw the passion he has for working out in the field eveytime he talked about it. PAY ATTENTION to his lectures! take notes! thats how you get A's in the class. You dont use a book in this class.
Nice Prof however I barely understand anything he says in class as he is just speaking jibberish. I really don't get this class at all..... He is so intelligent in the field of Linguistics that he forgets this subject doesn't come naturally. Do not take this class unless you must!! It will mess up your GPA! Please slow down for the rest of us Prof!
Let me get this out of the way: IF YOU DO NOT LIKE LANGUAGE DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. That said, Davidson is great! Interesting and informative lectures, in which he usually has 3-4 tangents and a few jokes. Paying attention is easy if you're interested in the material, and you'll learn lots of funny, semi-related historical tid-bits along the way.
Very nice guy. He's pretty funny and very clear about the material.
I had plenty people warning against taking this class but I absolutely loved it:) The subject is very interesting but def takes a lot of studying to complete the homework and do well on tests and understand the lectures. ProfDavidson has a great sense of humor.I know alot of people reallydisliked thisclass so not for every1.I wish I could type more
One of my favorite professors. Brilliant, helpful (ask!), patient, kind, amazing sense of humor, and, most importantly, he loves linguistics and genuinely wants you to love it, too. I highly recommend his class to anyone interested in the study of languages.
Very interesting instructor and course! Davidson is very lecture heavy with no class participation but makes the subject pretty fascinating. Notes each day along with homework due each week with a quiz, midterm& final in between. The night class tended to end before the time it was scheduled to which was great! He also has a subtle sense of humor.
This class was unreasonably hard. I had no clue what was going on even when I studied hard and asked for help from the professor or other classmates. There were no outside sources or tutoring for help. The professor is passionate about this subject but he teaches as though you already have some common knowledge of the subject. GPA Dropper for sure.
Hes a good guy but the whole two hours its jusy him talking. Hes very boring and monotone and he goes by everything so fast. He acts as if we already know what hes talking about and kind of shows off what he knows.
Fascinating, informative course-- especially since my major (SLP) has a lot to do with the subject. Honestly, I don't think this class would interest anyone who doesn't have a relevant major. I'm glad I was able to enjoy it though. As for the professor, his teaching style is quite dry and monotonous, but he is very knowledgeable and to-the-point.
His introduction to linguistics class was amazing. I took this course because I have a passion for languages, and it was the best decision ever! He is an expert and knows so much about this field, and his class has made me even more interested in languages! I was always so excited to go to his class, and now I am sad that Im done with the class
He is one of the best professors I ever had. Even though he goes all over the place, he explains the points of a matter clearly and concise. He knows what he does and he clarify any questions the students have. I am glad i got to take his class.
Class is very dense with info. Linguistics is what I want to major in, so I was highly interested and aced everything, but watched my class struggle. Find study buddies immediately & check your HW with each other!! If you know nothing about LING, get ready for a rollercoaster. Extremely interesting if you enjoy digging into language, not an easy A
8 assignments, 2 exams (mid-term and final), and 1 quiz. This course isn't too bad but the way Davidson explained the material, made it so difficult to follow the lectures. In my opinion, the first 8 weeks are a lot easier than the last 8 weeks. good luck!
Did a great job teaching under the corona virus circumstances
8 assignments, 1 quiz, 2 exams, and discussion posts. Each module consists of multiple readings for that section. Professor Davidson writes in a clear, concise, and informative manner as to understand the content. The assignments WILL TAKE TIME AND EFFORT to complete and understand. I recommend this class to anyone interested in Linguistics.
Worst Professor I have ever had. Completely unreachable, went over a month w/out grading assignments. It was important for our assignments to be graded in order to move on/know were on the right track (especially for exams). W/ this I blindly completed work after he never replied to emails for help. 8 heavy assignments, 15 discussi, 1quiz, 2 exams
Grades homework on correctness. Although its a linguistics class, there were no video lectures so it was a bit hard to understand the concepts but he does answer emails.
Where do I begin? First, it is nearly impossible to contact him. Second, when you ask a question he belittles you and makes you feel small and stupid. And third doesn't give examples or videos to help us better understand the material. The class is on linguistics so there should be more communication. But its a very easy class.
He posts the lecture notes online so you don't need to take notes; just pay attention to lecture. There's around 8 assignments, 2 exams, weekly discussion post. Exams are online and open note. I got a C because I'm lazy and I forgot an assignment or two, but they're not difficult. He's kinda dry but every once and a while he said something funny.
This class is a lot more confusing and complicated than it needs to be. Provides little to no explanation for markdowns on homework. The "lectures" barely explain anything; most of the time, you are left to teach yourself. This class is not what I expected it to be. I would NOT recommend it unless you have to.
Class was taken online and there are no lectures from the Professor besides a couple walkthroughs for problems, beyond that the whole class is reading and teaching yourself the material. Minimal effort on professor's end.
