Best professor I have EVER had (and I'm in 4th year). If you're going to take his class, you can EASILY get an 80++ IF you attend ALL classes. If not, expect a crap mark. I wish I had gone to more classes. Matt is sooo approachable and willing to help his students which is sooo nice and rare!!!

An amazing prof. He knows everything he is teaching in and out and doesn't go off tangent into "if you were in 4th year it would be done like this..." crap. He is always willing to help; office hours or outside of them, after class sometimes he would spend an extra hour just helping students. He is honestly my reference for the ideal professor.

Best prof I've ever had by far. It's amazing that the class has around 800 students and he gets all the midterms marked in under 6 hours. He's extremely helpful and wants all of his students to do really well. Never missed a lecture or lab because he makes math easy to understand and the content really fun and enjoyable to learn.

Hands Down the best prof i've ever had. He is very approachable and real helpful. Being in engineering, you dont have much time to attend his office hours etc however he will do his best by emailing you like 5 paragraph essays pretty much of the most useful information. UNREAL prof is the best way to describe him. Hopefully i kill this midterm now

THE best math prof you can have. He's good at what he teaches, and SO HELPFUL. If you don't understand something, you can email him and he'll be quick to respond, or go to his office hours, where he will give pointers for midterms or the exam, and little tricks to help with the material. So approachable and friendly, and he makes his classes fun.

Matt was an amazing teacher! I actually enjoyed going to lectures, and he was good at breaking up difficult material with funny jokes. He was one of the only teachers in my first year of engineering that I could consider actual "teachers", not just "profs" or "lecturers". :D I absolutely recommend any course that he is going to be teaching!

His tests were easy, got like 100% for finals and ended with a 95 overall I love how, unlike most high school math teachers, Matt understands that not everyone taking math, is math intuitive. So even if u suck at math, u can get a 70 :)

Prof Matt is the nicest prof that I've ever had. He is really chilled out and has a great class environment. He teaches really well and cares if you know what your doing. Amazing prof. Lectures are fun and informative. The text book is all you need to bring to class and has tons of examples and practice questions that we go through in the lectures. And office hours can be really useful for extra help if you aren't quite getting something.

Friendly and helpful. Took also MATH 2130 (numerical methods) and MATH 1200 with him. He tries hard to make the course material as clear possible and his efforts pay off well with greater student understanding. His exams are easy but long. Students must be able to solve quickly. Good practice of assignments and previous exams is important.

Matt is a great teacher who makes learning math fun. His labs and extra help are super helpful also he is such a fun guy to talk to. Kim and him work very well together to make these course better. I honestly don't know what my marks would have been without him. :) Keeping rocking at what ya do Matt!

Hands down best professor I've ever had in university. He is willing to help you if you need it. Not even just for academic support. When I did relatively well in his class, but was close to withdrawing from university due to other courses, he offered to be a voice of support to fight to keep me in school if it came down to it.

Extremely comprehensive, goes into extensive detail and is able to explain abstract concepts in a very simple easy to understand way. A lot of professors are labelled as "teachers" however many lack the actual ability to transfer knowledge and understanding to the student. Matthew is incredibly good at doing this, and this makes him a great teacher

Had a great experience with Matt through MATH1200 & 1210, amazing teacher, better guy. Really knows his stuff and makes math interesting. Pay attention and you've got yourself an easy 80+ in the course. Loved him, learned a lot. Can't wait for MATH2270 with him.

Probably my favorite professor at UoG. He can make the most difficult material seem easy when he teaches. His tests are all fair, and he always tells us what he expects.

Went to one class, then realized he uploads the fill-in-the-blanks to courselink where you can copy from there instead of in class. This course is a joke compared to first year calc at other unis. If you did well in Adv. Functions/Calc and Vectors, you will do well without too much work. Don't get shafted on the exam though, it is weighted heavily.

What can I say... Matt is the best prof at Guelph. You would be lucky to take a class with him. He consistently proves his value to this university. He makes math fun and interesting. His self made textbooks (or should I say bibles) make the class so much easier to understand. Still a challenging course, but a lot easier with good teaching.

A godsend for a first year professor. And I'm glad I've had him for other classes after first year(MATH1210, MATH2270). He makes his own textbook and sells it cheap. You do all the work in the textbook and you'll get A's. As for me, I struggle in school but still get by easily with this professor

All I can say is that other professors should learn from this guy when it comes to education. Matt nailed it and changed my perspective on mathematics. He really loves his job and really cares about his students, even if you're failing. 20/10 (or 2/1 for the math nerds ;) ). More professors should really learn how to teach from this guy.

Classes are amazing however beware hes tests are require alot of thinking, that means when u take a course with him u need be at 1000/10 level, get ready to think. Matt is one of the most gentle, caring profs out there. I tend to email profs over going to office hours and I've never gotten such timely and detailed responses from a prof before. He genuinely wants you to succeed. That being said, his tests are killer, definitely not cookie cutter questions.

Probably the most down to earth and relatable professor here. He's incredibly nice and caring towards all of his students. He always cracks relatable jokes in class and is overall just a wonderful person to have. The tests aren't too bad (class average 75%). But don't underestimate the material. I wish he taught all of my classes!

A Living Legend!!

First time having Matt as a professor in MATH*2270 and he has been great! His lectures are amazing, he's extremely supportive, knows his stuff, and really takes pride in his teaching. As someone who hasn't taken a calculus or math course in about 2 years, his warm-up test helped a ton to get me on track and helped me ace the first test!

Matt has been my prof for two courses now, he has been exceptional. love the way he teaches. His courses are structured beautifully. Great person.

Best professor at Guelph. He is so charismatic, you feel like he's just another student teaching the class. He makes his lectures very engaging and funny, and his tests are always fair in the sense that hard work and grades can be perfectly correlated. Dr Demers is an amazing professor! His lectures are incredible, inspirational, very well detailed and clear... The only thing that made me not give that solid 5/5 is his testing method. His tests are crazily OTT, very creative and challenging, but not in a good way. He tests some concepts for the first time during a test, and that's a no no for me.

Took Math1200 in first year, amazing prof! Solid lectures, made calculus mostly understandable for me. Feedback from midterms was literally the day after which was amazing (big thanks for the profs and TAs for making that happen). They (Matt and Kim) wrote their own textbook to sell to students at cost, so another big thanks for that.

Loved him. His lectures were amazing and often hilarious. He's really willing to help you if you ask for it. Sometimes his tests got tricky, but 99% of it was straightforward. He has the course really well organized for being asynchronous, and I can't wait for future in person classes with him

One of the best professors at Guelph. His lectures are super fun and you go over tons of information. Course doesn't use textbooks and the note package used in the course is provided for free. Lab tests are relatively okay but I found that the midterm and final were more challenging than Demers had alluded to. Overall, amazing (& funny) professor.

Matt is wonderful, my favourite prof, and manages to keep you interested in all his lectures. Doesn't make you buy textbooks as provides all needed notes. The lab tests are fair as long as you have a basic understanding of the content but midterm and exam are super challenging.

I am not actually in this class. Just sat in for a lecture and wrote half an essay for a diff class. Bro is so vibey. Real big fan. Just stopped doing my work and watched him teach. Just an amazing prof in general. Tries his best to make the course as easy as possible and he is super chill.

The content of this course is by no means easy but Matt's teaching easily made up for it in my experience. The course was mostly based on written tests and exams which we got part marks for in long answer solutions which was nice. Also the only lecture I consistently attended after midterms cause I actually enjoyed being there.

Definitely the best professor at Guelph. My advice is go to class, pay attention, and use all the for you to try's (homework questions) that he gives you. It is very easy to fall behind in this class, but it is very easy to succeed if you put in the work. His lectures are very funny, interactive, and educational. Will be missing him for MATH1210:(

Demers is a special prof that you'll encounter once in your lifetime. He genuinely cares for his students learning and success and will provide many resources for you to do well. Do the practice questions and review examples and you'll do great in his class!

This man is the best prof one could ever have. I truly miss him in 1210 and I wish he would teach me all of math courses. The way he engages with the students and his lectures is like no other profs. I truly enjoyed every lecture, although some were fast-paced but he made it fun.

Matt is an awesome prof - his lectures are fun and engaging, and he provides plenty of resources to help you succeed. Using unstuckstudy alongside the free course notes really made studying a breeze. Definitely take this class if you can!

One of the best professors I have ever had in my university. Just attended the lecture and aced all the exams.

He's a super nice down to earth type of guy who actually cares about his students and them doing well in his class. His lectures are super engaging and easy to follow and for a course that is known to be pretty difficult. He even provides his own follow along textbook/practice questions free of charge. Easily the best prof I've had at Guelph.

He has 2 playlists in his Youtube account, covering all materials for each course made by the GOAT himself during the COVID-19 pandemic. The content still relevant to 2025 notes.

Matt is a great prof. He explains concepts clearly and does lots of examples. Would highly recommend him to anybody taking Differential Equations.

Not surprised that Matt is one of the most highly rated professors at Guelph. He's a great guy and a really good teacher, you can tell that he wants to see his students succeed. The way that he teaches math is very palatable, he doesn't often skip steps like some professors end up doing. Super approachable outside of lecture!

I absolutely loved Matt as my professor this semester. His lectures are just the BEST. He takes the time to explain the concepts in a way that actually make sense, and he's always patient, supportive and approachable. You can tell he really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Probably the best professor I've had at Guelph so far. :)

Hands down the best math prof!

Great prof extremely chill and down to earth. You can tell he actually wants to teach and wants his students to succeed in this class. Although his final was very hard compared to the other tests in this class I genuinely feel if another prof taught this course I wouldn't have done well in it.

Matt is an awesome prof for real analysis. His tests are very fair if you've kept up with the material, and the assignments are actually fun and really help build your understanding. He's super approachable and always around to help in office hours or after class. If you're nervous about analysis, take it with Matt you'll be in good hands.

Absolutely fantastic. Lectures are informative and not boring. Genuinely looked forward to this class every week. He answers questions clearly and is super encouraging. Very available on email or in office hours. Only downside to this course were the labs (all the TAs were quite terrible).

one of the best professors for math in Guelph , made differential equations likable even though it is a very annoying subject . tests are very fair and very reasonable with the marking , when you email him even if its at night he responds . i dont think you can find a better professor than demers !

MATT DEMERS IS MY GOAT. His lectures are so good, and he makes the most difficult concepts feel easy and approachable. He is super kind and enthusiastic. I always looked forward to his lectures. Also, he genuinely cares about the success of his students, which can be rare in such a large class! I love diffies for life now because of him.
