He really likes to analyze the reading material. He's always there to help you during his office hours.

His grandma died, and he was sad. He was going through it that semester. He may be different other semesters. He gave me a B. He's funny and the books he chooses are fun to read. You do different things every day.
Great teacher. He is very patient. Loved taking his class.
this teacher is so good. he really cares about his students. he's great
interesting class, time goes by fast and i laugh a lot in this class
He is so cool and he care about his students and gives them many chances. He is also funny and the books that I read this semester were very interesting and kept me wanting for more.
Truly the best english teacher!
cool and cute
his passion for the Classics is great. Does great with a rather dry subject, brought his wife once and had food for all of us, very very cool dude.
I took this class before transferring. I was not interested in this class because it was purely nonfiction, but it was a requirement for me as an English major, so I had to take it. I heard of Professor Duckworth by reputation--a great professor. Though I wasn't too crazy about the material, Matt made the bearable. Lots of fun; learned a lot!
The mannner in which Matt used video to flesh out Shakespeare and give it voice, truly made the difference between tedium and absorbtion. I felt challenged by him to find things in our readings outside the scope of his lectures. As a result I didn't simply read the words, I read the BOOKS! I have since sought out the authors he introduced me too
His activities are interesting, yet his assignments are very hard. I won't say that he's the worst teacher because he's really a "BOOK" guy that prepares your for the higher level. But, he's very pity on summaries, and he'll assign the essays way later than you think. I'm sorry to distract his rating record, but time is different.
he is a helpful teacher, and his class needs a lot of talking and sharing about the "book",he loves surfing that he shows us a movie about this interest. he is a nice guy and speaks so fast.feel free to take his class, less homework, great teacher!
minimal homework, easy grader.. take him for english.. you wont regret it..
Mr. Duckworth's a good teacher! I thought his class was interesting, even though I hate english. I was really close to dropping his class because I was falling behind, but he would work with the class as far as pace goes.
He is a pretty easy teacher who always like to talk about nature. His class is very interesting. i highly recommended this class
very funny teacher, not too hard, grades people on their creativity and details. i love how he respects whatever people write and how they think. i would take his class again
Matt Duckworth is useless. He doesn't grade your work and he does not return it to you. He is very opinionated. He gave me a failing grade for the midterm grade, so I dropped the class. He said the reason he gave me a "F" was because of my attendance, so I guess it was very frustrating with him.
Mr. Duckworth is the best English teacher, I had him four 4 classes, Engl 92,94,Classics 35, and Engl 1B. He explains everythings with detail and excitement. Loves teaching and is always willing to help students outside of class. His test are easy to understand but challenging, he cares about the students learning. Great teacher
Professor Duckworth is the best English professor i have ever had in CCSF. He is willing to help his students whenever they seek it. He is just there for you. He LOVES BOOKS. Yes, he is very passionate about teaching and reading. And of course, creative writing is also his best interest.
NO idea what he is actually teaching in class, he just assign the readings everyday and then talk about it on the next day(seriously!!!)I totally have no idea what i've learned.Easy teacher on grading...not a good choice for students who wants to learn, but if you want a easy teacher, take him.
Great teacher with a lot of interesting things to say. He's very passionate about the topic and he catches you up in that. I thought he was fair and approachable. Unlike other teachers, he understands that his class is an elective and is a little lenient on structure if the content is good with writing. Take his class! You'll enjoy it.
He is an excellent teacher, dedicated to his students. He knows the subject extremely well and conveys it fabulously - with no pressure. His questions make you think analytically, with no right or wrong answers. We even questioned some of Aristotle's long-held beliefs that are usually taken for granted! I am sincerely thankful. Matt is the best!
very good teacher! but i've never got back my homework that i turned in... and its almost the end of the semester; which means i have no idea how i am doing in the class.
Well he's a good teacher.. Teaches you a lot of stuff... But never return's your work but you know you will get an high grade if you just do what he told you to and Go to class regularly, He will take care of business...
Take his class. As long as you do the work, you will be fine. No surprises. He is so passionate about the material that it's contagious. Even if you think the plays are hard, they will make so much sense the way he explains them. He's doesn't just know his stuff, he also knows how teach it to his students.
Mr. Duckworth is a wonderful and approchable teacher. He knows well the subject. His classes are always full of enthusiasm. The grade is based on attendance, 2 essays, quizzes (based on short stories or any material he provides), midterm (true and false question and response to quotations from one of the two novels you must read. It's worthy!!!!
Mr.Duckworth full of enthusiasm once class has started he just keeps going so the class doesn't have that long feeling to it.He knows his books and enjoys sharing them with the class. I hope he teaches English 1C in the spring as I would take it with him. He makes you work, but you feel satisfied with yourself after.
He is full of enthusiasm and he knows the subject very well. However I did not learn that much from the class. He never gave any techniques on how to read/write more efficiently and this is what I expect to get from an English class.
Professor Duckworth likes to lecture a lot. When I took his class all we did was watch documentaries and barely write anything. I never learned anything from him. I failed Eng 96 because he never taught me anything in Eng 93. Nice guy but not a great teacher.
If you do what Duckworth asks, you'll get a fair grade. His class is pretty straightforward and the books he teaches are, for the most part, readable- even if English is not your cup of tea. He's not rigid; there are really no wrong answers. He respects student's opinions, and doesn't shove just one (his) interpretation down your throat.
Matt Duckworth is a useless teacher because he doesn't grade your work that you turn in or return it to you. He gave me a "F", for the midterm because I was late to class, not on my work that I turned in, not a good teacher STAY AWAY FROM HIM!
Good Teacher
Probably best English teacher ever.Super smart and upbeat!! the material is easy to read. If you dont like writing too much this is you class!
best English teacher ever , he is so sweet .. take hist class he is the best. lots of reading but not too many essays
Because of him, I love to read books now. His books are interesting. You will learn more than reading. That's how his books will teach you. Essays are straightforward. take him if you want to gain knowledge about life. Don't be lazy with readings or you won't learn a thing.
His books choices were extremely boring and dreadful to read in the beginning but the last one and the women warrior was interesting, lots of hw, costantly had to read everynight, quizzes, he is a decent teacher, attendance is important he onnly adds about 2 to class when adding the class size pretty small , had to do a lot of research in librAry
I had him in Fall 06; although I was quite intimidating at first, he literally changed my perspective of English! I strongly give him special acknowledgement for not only being passionate instructor but also making our class enjoyable. Some may not like the reading material, yet his lecture offers the main ideas. He does offer preparation for 96!
Take him. he is cool.
he is the best english teacher only 3 essays and the class is based on quizes from the books and the midterm is T/F questions, multiple choice, and short answers and a short essay question which is just right 2 paragraphs along with the final is the same. I got a B.
There is no way in the world I would get an A in English! But in fact, I did! Mr. Duckworth is the best! The book is okay, I like the last one. He is very helpful, very nice, understanding, and everything! I highly recommend him!
Mr. Duckworth is the BEST teacher I've had so far in English. I highly suggest him because of his clear, visual, and interesting topics. He make sure that everyone is not lost and is in the same page as everyone else. Overall his class was interesting and FUN!
makes you read a lot. not my favorite teacher. easy easy A as long as you somewhat read all the books. doesn't give very good comments on essays and takes him the whole semester to give back the first essay. very easy teacher but to me, makes you read a little TOO much...
Never got back an essay. Got a C in this class but it's more on my fault. He is very nice, always excited, helpful, and checks/responds to emails daily. It's not too difficult of a class but it does require a good amount of reading.
reading alot is to be expected in any english class. How can you write a good paper if you dont read
you really need to enjoy reading to like his class. note: he doesn't add students from waitlist.
it is easy, but you need to read tons of tons of tons of reading. don't take him, i am serious.
Duckworth is a very good professor! He is knowledgeable and helpful. I like his class a lot because his class was interesting and I learned a lot. He also tries his best to help his students to success. I hope someday I can do my job like him - knowledgeable on the field and try best to help others!
I feel I am very lucky to be in his class. He is a professor who can help you not only with English but also with other knowledge!
Be prepared to read!! He assigned about 100 pages per week. His class is more about how to read than how to write. Read, discussing, and then in class essay.
finish 8 text books in a semester!!! Horrible!!! Learn nothing from his course. Assigns a LOT of reading every class. Never gives back my essays!!
too much reading, learn nothing!
Duckworth is a good teacher. He is so interested by what he wants to tell us, that it makes it difficult not to listen to him. I never felt bored in his class. The only really bad point is that he does not give back any essays or tests.. Otherwise, he is nice and funny, plus I think he's kinda cute ;)
Best English teacher I've ever had.
worst teacher I've ever had. he was rude and gave different grades to those who acted as fan girls as opposed to those who disagreed with what he was teaching.
best teacher i've had... i dont like reading but being in his class made me love it.
Nice but too scattered/ disorganized.Hands out undecipherable stacks of papers, illegible print, old notes from college.Favors young girls. He jerks from topic to topic, talks about himself too much. He needs to put a class reader together, get some help on presenting material and how to develop class discussion. Covers great writers but not well.
Will not prepare you to write clearly or well. Too chaotic. Be careful which intro writing teacher you get; some are great and you will breeze through all classes where you have to write. Others, and you will be struggling forever. Avoid Duckworth.
He helped me make good duck soup!! Yum!!! Quack quack quack quack from the mighty duck movie he was there!
So fun! Uses visuals, has extremely helpful class discussions, is lenient and laid back. Great teacher!!
Anyone who has taken a Lit. Survey course at CCSF should know what to expect: 1) Heavy reading load 2) Periodic assignments (reading responses) 3) Two papers (not including in-class mid-term and final essays). Duckworth isn't great about returning work submitted, but is very approachable during office hours, and is an engaging lecturer.
The best English teacher. Always passionate about books he teaches. Very interesting and informative lectures. Take his class if you love to read, or want to learn how to really read the book and not get lost between chapters. Great professor.
Love going to his class, never boring... Though he assigned lots of reading but it's manageable. He made me enjoy reading as well. Highly recommended!
Great professor. HONESTLY, if you're looking for a professor who actually cares and puts so much enthusiasm in teaching look no further. Yes, there is a lot of reading but even if you didn't have time to read the assigned reading, just pay attention in class and he goes over all the important details of what was read. He's awesome!
He is a great teacher. Although i got f on the midterm ,he still gave me a c on the final grade`
If you need a constant feedback about your work, this professor is not for you. Take his class if you love to read, if you love great stories, and if you hate boredom.
He was the BEST teacher I have ever had!! I took him for ENG93 and ENG 1B. He loves reading and makes you love it too. Great class. You never get bored. Especially when he talks about poems, he gets so excited which makes you excited as well. LOVED his class. BEST BEST BEST!!
Like many other reviews have said, Matthew likes to take his time grading paper, so if you like to get feedback from your writing, he is not for you. However, if you are someone who loves to read, you will like his class. He is passionate about books and his choice of books can be fun and interesting, definitely not a boring instructor.
He is the best professor I ever had in my life. Very understanding (does give extension on essay), willing to help student all the time. Come see him at his office hour if u want to know your grade, otherwise he never return any papers or tests.
I have never done more reading than in this course. He gives out a lot of handouts, which are essential to read and retain because they are all on the tests. The readings include poetry selections, which often require suplemental reading to understand. Don't fall behind on the reading. It's nigh impossible to catch up.
I just took his English 1A class. I must say professor Duckworth will put you to work and assign a enormous amount of reading assignment. However, don't let the reading material intimidate you and not take his class. He is very passionate about teaching and you will never get bored in his class. Just keep up with the reading and you will be fine.
Amazing professor. Lectures are never boring. If you love to read and think, take his class.
He doesn't know what he wants. He doesn't give us back the essays. You will never know what grade he will give you. Go see him if you want a good grade. The books are boring. He wants us to read what he is interested in. He doesn't care about his students. He wants us to read about fish and boring stuffs because he thinks they are interesting.
Mr. Duckworth is one of the best teacher I've had. He may come as rude in the first few days of the semester but I think it's just for show to set things straight. He is actually nice and respectful. He assigns a lot of reading, but the books he assigns are the best. Just do what he ask you to do and you will be ok.
Make sure you show up to class and do the reading! Amazing lectures and real approachable.
He does not return essays. He is not the man who stays with his schedule. Easy on turning in late essay, just email him first. Lectures are okay. It may sounds hard on the first day when he talks about his plan, but then, he is not the man who sticks with his plans so you might not have to do tons of work (as he planned). A nice guy though.
If you take his class, you must get F. When I took his class, he never returned essay paper and exam. I got F on midterm and dropped off the class. I hate him. You must change another instructor who you can pass.
Professor Duckworth is clearly passionate about literature and his passion is infectious. His book choices are interesting and worth reading and discussing. He makes class fun to attend and he clearly cares about his students. He is understanding and ready to help. Do the readings and participate in class and you will succeed.
As long as you turn in everything, read most of the material, and study for the midterm and final, you should do well.
Professor Duckworth loves to read. Some of books are tough to read, but it's worth to read them. I usually sale books after finishing classes, but I keep some of books of his class. I want my kids to read them. He is very respectful, and understands students' situations. So, if you miss the class, email him before the class.
Probably one of the harder English classes. Better be ready to read and interpret a bunch of stupid poetry that you'll never understand. I'd recommend looking at other professors for an easier and less stressful semester. Also heads up, he can be pretty strict and definitely has a short temper.
Mr. Duckworth was a great professor, you only have 3 essays with a research paper at the end of the semester as homework. Midterms and finals are fairly easy as long as you do the reading. Only complaint, it was really difficult to get into his books, mostly about ships, and the sea, not a topic for all. but overall id take him again.
I took English 1A with another teacher failed, but with Duckworth got a B. He's a fair grader and a nice teacher. All his lectures and notes prepare you for test. I'm not a good writer, if ever. With Duckworth, you're reading and writing will improve. Come to class everyday, ask him for help in office hours. 4 books semester -- GL
Halfway through the semester he showed us a former student's essay that he gave an A to even though it was clear that said student hadn't read the book. He said that, that student wrote well. But, he rarely dedicated time if any about what h wanted from our essays. We only ever talked about whatever we read between classes (usually 4-7 chapters).
I had three semesters of English classes with him and they were all of very high quality. I strongly recommend this instructor for any class. He has clear expectations and his ability to let you know what they are is one of the traits that makes him a good instructor.
Professor Duckworth is a nice teacher and he always has sense of humor. However, he doesn't return the essay paper in a timely manner. I wrote 4 essays paper this semester and I only got 2 back near the end of the session. A lot of reading but his selections were great and fun to read. Not too much paper to write comparing to my previous 1A class.
Professor Duckworth is amazing. His lectures are packed with useful ideas that will help you to build a strong essay. He also has a good sense of humor. Almost no homework, just the readings but those are substantial. He allows to turn in essays late, as long as you let him know that you need more time. Extra credit offered. Great class!
Duckworth hates tardiness and will call everyone out if something he doesnt like will happen and stop class to do so. Duckworth doesnt allow cellphones at all and will lecture you on electronics and why he doesnt want them in the classroom. He also will cut you off and will hit a wall with you. Discussions are hard to have in a lecture room.
Professor Duckworth is an amazing english teacher. As long as you do the readings assigned and turn in your papers you will have no problem passing. He doesn't try to trick you on the quizzes and exams, everything is very straight forward. He is a very fair grader and provides you with his grading criteria for each of the individual papers.
Best professor I've taken. Makes me wanna major in English. Takes a while to give back graded work. Really approachable and helpful during office hours , go to office hours instead of tutoring cause the tutors were useless for me.
Great Professor. Little lecture heavy but he walks you through exactly what he's looking for in a paper. Expects you to be caught up on reading so if you slack off you can miss out on in-class discussions(which he counts towards participation grades) or quiz's which are either weekly or bi-weekly. He takes off points from papers if you're tardy.
Duckworth is fun, and you can tell he absolutely loves and breathes literature. Sometimes he is a bit disorganized, but he's really kind and funny and a very engaging lecturer. He takes a while to give back graded work and prints off a lot of things, but he's very accessible outside of class.
Well, I just finished his 2019 sping. He is a professional English professor I would say. But the reading was relatively difficult. This semester, we read Homer, The Iliad, Shakespeare, and some poems and some stories. Basically, we read a lot. His lecture is normal but he knows what is he doing. If you take his class, be prepared to read!!
There is a lot of reading and even more printed out reading but the lectures are amazing and you can get away with just paying great attention in class instead. Personally, I loved this class and I learned a lot about poems. He gives lots of extensions and is very understanding; just go to office hours if you have any concerns or questions.
Great professor! You can tell he loves what he's teaching and is always enthusiastic during his lectures. He takes a while to give back work but the class is quite easy as long as you stay on top of the work. He is also really accessible outside of class and is really helpful and understanding.
Matt is super incredible, he doesn't have textbooks but teaches tons of super interesting books and helps the class by giving full analysis and answers all questions anyone has about the readings. He teaches THE BEST classics, like poe, sopholces, and shakespeare. He is super flexible with meetings outside of class. Make sure to participate !!
Professor Duckworth is the absolute BEST english teacher I have ever had the honor of taking, hands down. You can tell how much he loves teaching English, and his lectures are always interesting and fun. Reading and writing essays are assigned somewhat often, but it's an English class so really what do you expect? Amazing, funny, caring, best ever!
Prof. Duckworth is the BEST. It's an honor to be in his class! Reading and writing essays are assigned, there are few quizes but you will be notified. I love all his lectures. Wait for what he brings in the class to aid learning. He is inspiring, caring, passionate, and remained to be as we transition half of the sem to online due to the pandemic.
Best English I have at CCSF! His lectures are fun and interesting. The essay is about the readings and he is always available for office hours, so he is really caring and helpful. Above and beyond. He also chooses books which are affordable, he provide hand outs and rrading copies for free. High respect to Prof. Duckworth. Thank you, Prof!!!
Took Remotely:Agreat teacher, a lil disorganized. He never fully graded ALL my assignments (or graded out of 0?) &posted slightly inconsistent, but everyones getting used to distance learning. I liked 2.5 of 3 books he assigned for the semester! Very nice &knowledgeable; helped me analyze readings better; I liked participating;definitely recommend
Outstanding professor who allows for students to grow and learn in class. He only asks that you show up and pay attention. He is extremely knowledgeable and picks curriculum that makes students think about bigger issues like the environment, pollution, and overfishing. Get ready to work but you will be a better student for it!
Professor Duckworth is one of my greatest professors in CCSF. I love his lectures and inspirational feedbacks. I always reached his help when I needed, and there was always a help available to me. He is thoughtful, careful and hilarious professors. Please take his class for all your benefits of English classes.
Great professor! He posts a lot of lectures and they are not boring which is wonderful. He is funny and lenient, you could easily ask for an extension for essays. You will need to read about <1000 pages of books and write about 10,0000 words on assignments. Sounds like a lot of work but hey, it's a college English class.
Great professor read around 3 books and provided great feedback on essays. I thought I was going to get a B but he clutched up with an A
He's a great professor other than the fact that he did not grade a single essay during the entire semester.
The class in general was ok but did not receive a single grade the whole semester. Then you will get graded down for things the teacher does not like, even though you received zero feedback the whole semester. Seems unfair.
Duckworth was an awesome professor. I took him remotely, and he offered extensions on essays if I needed them. People seem to ding him for the grading, but it seems as if every student passes the class with a good grade regardless. He will help if you ask for it and is very passionate about his lectures and the class overall.
Professor Duckworth is very passionate about his subject and he's funny and engaging. There is a lot of reading and writing though. The papers he assigns have been pretty unique instead of boilerplate. He is also pretty good about giving extensions and offering help if needed.
One of the best English professors available at CCSF. Granted, grading can take a long time, but he is knowledgeable of the reading materials and gives good feedback. Be prepared to read and write a lot, especially for the midterm and final. If you have any iota of interest in reading and writing about literature, I can recommend his class.
Mr. Duckworth is a good professor. His lectures help to foster a better understanding of the text and provide a basis for what he thinks are standout moments. It was nice to have someone as detail-oriented as Mr. Duckworth to explain some of the scenes going on. My only gripe is that he doesn't really give feedback or grades in a timely manner.
Read around 3 books and wrote essays for them, good about giving out extension, and understanding. Attend to class to get a good grade
He is a passionate, experienced, and wise professor. His lectures aren't boring at all. There're lots of readings, quizzes, and essays based on those readings, so it's important to keep the pace. The exams are hand-written essays. The only thing to improve for him is to take less time to give feedback/grades on assignments.
He definitely gives out too many papers than expected and jumps right into your first paper first week of school. We didn't really do a lot of peer work in his class. It was mainly just him rambling on about boats and ships. That's the topic you mainly write about in class which won't be that interesting to some people.
Take this teacher if you want a challenge and a teacher that demands something out of you. A lot of work but feels like it could prepare you for university. A lot of readings
excellent teacher you will learn how to read like a college student I loved it passionate about ocean-- SO AM I 10/10
Professor Duckworth is hands down the best English professor at CCSF. It was such a joy to be one of his students. Not only was I able to add an Honours Contract past the deadline, but I also registered for his Honours 1B course next semester the moment it went live. He has challenged me to become a more active reader and a meticulous writer.
Great professor, a bit traditional isn' t canvas dependent and will give lots of sheets for homework. So attendance is must and you need to read a whole book for mids and finals and try to remember about that book to answer those questions and essays, he is a lenient grader and gardes well if he sees that you have the idea about the books detail
Great books, and great lectures. Interesting and insightful books.
Great lectures, great feedback, great books, great discussions on each book. He is a great professor, 10 out of 10 reccomend.
Professor Duckworth is passionate + inspiring! Don't be late to class; it's rude. I would be a fool not to utilize his office hours. He helped improve my writing & provided a deeper analysis of the readings. I deeply value our one-on-one conversations. He's there for his students who take the initiative & will prepare you for university writing. :)
This professor brings a unique approach to the course, emphasizing critical thinking and engagement with complex topics like the environment. While the workload is demanding, it's worthwhile if you're willing to put in the effort. Unstuckstudy and the free textbook are great study aids.
He loves ships and the ocean which he reflects in the course material he teaches. Even if that sounds boring at face value, he'll change that for you. Easy and chill, the worst thing you can really do is be more than 20 minutes late.
Loves what he teaches. Professor Duckworth gives out a very few writing assignments. Attendance is "mandatory" but there isn't much to do in classes. The only bad part is he doesn't tell you your grades and doesn't update them throughout the class. You don't really know how well you're doing. Very passionate, if taking for credit, take online tho
He's very passionate (almost all reading is about boats/the ocean) but conveys that well to the teaching. Heavy focus on memorization and critical analysis of 3 or 4 full books. Acts tougher than he grades. Only complaint is he didn't return many papers, but that could have been due to a recurring illness this semester. Overall very good class
Professor Duckworth is passionate about what he teaches. The class is centered around several books and short stories. Be prepared to read! The HUGE downside to this class is that he doesn't grade anything. I went the whole semester without a single graded paper. Couple 3-5 paper essays throughout the semester. Midterm and final are in class essays.
Loves theming his work after the subject of the semester (murder mysteries, Sherlock Holmes, etc.). He is a very caring professor who wants to support his students. Be prepared to write a good amount since exams are in-class essays. He also has a good amount of required reading. He lectures very well and is always available to talk about grades.
Mr. Duckworth was a good teacher and very passionate about his work. The poems/books he assigned were really interesting to me. His assignments, though not that many(5-6?), consisted of essays(IN-PERSON/take home) and quizzes. There is a lot of readings and it felt it was hard to balance this class with my others, so I had to withdraw from it.
