Does things his way. Grades hard on papers. provides other opportunities to make higher grades. If you do your work you will atleast make a C.

HE IS AWFUL!!!
hey, i passed
Fike is the devil. He's got an inferiority complex that causes him to try to be a hard teacher and a jerk. Granted, I played his grading system for all it's worth and walked out with an A. But unless you're a strong writer, I wouldn't suggest him.
Hard but you learn a lot. Very picky. Kinda of wierd. Good teacher. Just turn your stuff in.
His Shakespeare class was very interesting, but you do have a 10pg paper at the end.Granted you HAVE to study and keep up with which quotes he talks about in class (they show back up in quizzes and test) but he still loves what he teaches and thats nice!
Dr. Fike is wonderful, but only take his class if you're willing to commit to the material. He's also quite cute, in a bookish sort of way.
He strives to bring out the best in his students. Its a challenge, but he's a great writing professor
What an awful little man. I agree with one of the other students when they said: Fike is the devil. He's got an inferiority complex that causes him to try to be a hard teacher and a jerk.
At first, I thought that Fike was going to be extremely hard. However, I worked hard and I was quite proud of the B I made in the class. I learned more from him than I have most other English teachers that I have ever had.
I agree that he's the devil. You won't get to express your opinion or interpretation on any of the readings in his class. It's either his interpretation or none. If you even attempt to have an opinion on the tests, you will fail. When taking his tests, repeat his ideas verbatim. Tests=essays only.
Dr. Fike is extremely helpful-He's always willing to meet with you to discuss any issues that you may be having. I don't understand why people think that he's the devil. He's the friendliest professor that I've had! Also, He respects positions/interpretations of the texts that are well argued.
Dr. Fike is a very sweet person. He has a sense of humor that keeps you interested in the class. His assignments are challenging, but he is always around to offer help to anyone.
Dr. Fike's class is fairly hard. He seems opinionated and only interested in students who think like him. He does not really teach you how to write papers to his perfection, he expects it. Challenging class. Very challenging and frustrating.
Dr.Fike was extremely hard and very intimidating. I was scared to voice my opinion in this class. Yes I did learn a great deal of info from the class but he was to concerned with everyone participating. He also was biased and made it known when he did not like your answer.
Extremely hard class. I would stay away from it unless you want an F, or you are very good at reading and comprehending Shakespeare. His tests you have to identify who says what and why. Incredibly tedious and boring work. Papers are terrible and his requirements are unrealistic for non-engl majors
Definitely worth the while!
This man is nuts! DO NOT take him if you aren't an english major. He assumes that everyone is and that they know 1800 poetry like it was a childtime bedtime story.
I had Fike my freshman year. It was his first semester at Winthrop, and he was determined to make our lives horrible. He preached about how this class would be a "painful transition" into college writing. One good point, I played his grading scale for all it was worth and walked out with an A.
Very hard class. I do not recommend taking this class with any other 300 level English. However, Fike has an uncanny sense of humor that can often hit you by surprise.
I didn't enjoy Fike as a teacher at all-this class was boring I thought-but he's a fair grader and if you pay attention in class, take notes, and read the material, you should do well.Fike is also quite helpful outside of class, and can be a pleasant person when he's in a good mood.Play by all the rules, don't get on his wrong side, and you'll survive.
Dr. Fike is odd. If you don't know what you're talking about, you should probably not offer your opinion b/c he will shoot you down. His tests are easy if you know the material--they are straight from power-points that he posts on the web. He lets you write your term paper in stages which is helpful, but sometimes the criticism he offers is "out of nowhere," like it is not consistent with what he says in conferences. Knowledgeable professor but somewhat abrasive
this class is hard
This class is ridiculous. It does not matter how hard you try, if he doesn't like how you write he will fail you. Even people who have had no problems with writing the past are at high risk of failing or doing very poorly in this class. Do not take this class if you are interested in keeping your GPA up!
DO NOT TAKE FIKE!!!! HE is HORRIBLE!!! He isn't helpful, and if he doesn't like how you write, then you might as well forget having a good grade. He is creepy too! I have shed more tears over this class, its a waste of time. I have not learned anything from him b/c he doesn't really teach. Horrible, just horrible. NEVER TAKE FIKE!!
He's tough but reasonable. I've had him twice already for different classes and because he is demanding and the classes challenging, you actually learn the material and remember it. I wouldn't recommend a non-English major taking his foo level courses because there is a lot of reading and time to be spent on the material.
Dr. Fike is a very intelligent man. Unfortunately, he expects all of his students to be on the same level. The class was rather dry, but not too hard as long as you keep up with the reading. He does the paper in stages, which is very helpful, but he wants you to write Dr. Fike's paper, not your own. If you don't agree with him, too bad.
If you are not an english major and like not having to stress about a required course, do not take him. He grades extremely hard.
Extremely hard professor and kind of creepy.
He is genuinely a nice guy and knowledgeable, too, however, he is SOOOOO boring. His voice is monotone and he just reads his slide shows each day. His class can make even the most passionate British Lit student feel like they are wasting their life. Quizes are VERY hard, but papers weren't that bad for me.
Relies heavily on powerpoints but if you make a good point and can prove it's not just BS, he'll think about it. Loves the material and knows it(some by heart:Ulysses) I'm an english major so i was interested. not for non-english majors.some material will be boring.just do your work,go to class and pay attention.it's a college level english class
Dr.Fike is hard. There is no question about it. I am not good at writing papers and I got bad grades at first. But you get a lot of chances to make up for it and in the end I got a B. Not an easy class, but I learned a lot and I write a MUCH better essay now. Work hard, do the homework, stay on top of the essays and ASK QUESTIONS and you will do OK
the most boring professor ever... he only used black & white powerpoints & talked so monotone. i am an okay english student and he gave me good grades on the papers, but the QUIZES are TERRIBLE. he expects you to remember random details and wants you to be as passionate as he is. i made As on every essay but STILL only got a C in the course!
Loved this class - can be a little tedious at times, but Dr. Fike knows what he's talking about. He likes to make jokes that people don't always get, and wants you to exceed his and your expectations. Great feedback on writing (typed, so you can read it).
I would highly recommend dropping if his name shows up on your schedule. Difficult. Not helpful at all. Do not recommend. Makes you feel stupid if you do not understand an assignment.
He's very inconsistant and unclear on what he wants for group projects and major papers. Has a superiority issue. Loves Shakespeare. He takes his fustrations out on the class. He also belives that CRTW is the same as Eng 500.
This class is useless and a waste of time as it is and he adds extra work that is not going to be helpful or useful at any point in my future. Looks at us like we're stupid if you do not think or write like he does. Terrible teacher. Unclear or what he wants but is more than willing to tell you how wrong you are.
GET OUT NOW! I took Dr. Fike for CRTW and he made my life absolutely miserable! His assignments were pointless in regards to the class and they were extremely difficult to accomplish. He is a jerk on purpose in class and with his grading. Save yourself now. I wish I had never stepped foot into his classroom.
DROP NOW! DROP NOW! You might make it with a B if you are petite and blonde. Or are an international student. Dont close the door if you go to his office. Creepy. I warned you! Horrible teacher. He is a miserable little man. Everybody fail his paper unless you are one of the above. Waste of time. Get out now. Fast.
Shakespeare - he was extreamly hard although the class itself is extreamly hard I have taken both Furr and Fike, Furr gave me a D and Fike gave me a C+ for the same work. Furr is more interesting but grades harder, Fike is dry with black and white powerpoints and terms you'll never use but you'll come out with a better grade dispite what you think
This is by FAR the worst teacher i have ever had or met. He thinks his opinion is the right one, and everyone else is wrong. He is creepy and i felt very uncomfortable in a room with a closed door with him. He will shoot everything you say down. He try's to influence you with his opinions. If you are in the military or were,he hates the military.
If you are in Army Reserves or military period and get called in or have reserves for the weekend and cant complete and assignment or whatever the case may be, he said you will not get it excused, even for absensces if you have to be with military. He is a deuche bag!
He's alright, but definitely not easy. You'll only pass if you're good at papers and you speak up in class. He has a monotonous voice and is awkward most times, but occasionally he makes a joke that's actually funny. You also have to do the reading or at least be able to BS it during class. If you need an easy class, don't take his.
I had Dr. Fike for British Lit and then for Elizabethan. He is one of the best professors I had at Winthrop. If you are interested or at least appear to be, you can do well. He will teach you if you are willing to learn. Not a professor for just an easy grade.
I love Dr. Fike. There aren't a lot of professors out there wh never waste my time, but he's one of the few. I also don't think I could name another professor who spells things out so clearly and does everything short of writing the paper to help his students. He's also one of the smartest people I've ever met.
he is straight forword no doubt but he gets straight to the point. Grades papers pretty hard but does help. He trys to tell jokes but not all of them are really funny.... hes cool though
Dr Fike is a quality professor that truly wants to see students do well. He is straight forward and prepares you for endeavors beyond this class. His class is not easy but it is a typical Winthrop English class- BT
I have to admit that I was terrified coming into this class. I am a junior English major with a great track record but that didn't stop me from being daunted. After the first few weeks, I realized that my preconceived ideas were dead wrong. Dr. Fike is the smartest person I've ever met and I have learned so much in his class! Hard but worth it!
I was scared going into this class. Shakespeare was not something I was comfortable with. Dr. Fike knew what he was talking about and the massive essay for the class turned out to be a lot easier than I expected. Doing it in steps may be time consuming and irritating but it actually works.
Hearing that Fike was the professor for Shakespeare, I was really scared.BUT Fike turned out to be a wonderful professor. Slideshows are available online, and he guides the class discussions to highlight what's going to be on his exams. Fike makes his lectures fun and interesting by explaining shakespeare in the vernacular :) lol
I WISH I DIDNT TAKE HIM...HE GRADES EXTREMELY HARD AND BORING...you have to come to class because he is strict on attendence and u CANT BE LATE cause he is strict with time...he trys to tell jokes and fails....i hated that class
Dr. Fike knows what he's talking about, but he often tells us his opinion rather than fact. He gives us the slide shows online, but does not explain things well in class. He is frightfully boring, as well. He also finds allusions to sex in every single thing we read; it's uncomfortable. I would not recommend him to anyone.
Excellent professor, but no point you are just in it for an easy A. But he tells you exactly what he expects which is better, to my mind, than an easier professor who expects you to magically know what they want. His papers are challenging but he has an in class review and a separate peer review for each one which makes it much easier.
He is rude and thinks he is above everyone else.
Dr. Fike will tell you exactly what he wants from you, it's your decision to follow through or not. He is one of the best professors I have ever had, and I went into the class hearing every horror story in the book about him. If you are an English major you don't have much of a choice anyway. Hint: Use "No Fear Shakespeare" on sparknotes.
Dr. Fike is hard. He's very opinionated and you can definitely tell. His essays are very challenging. The essays in HMXP are all on your own. Classes discuss the articles you're expected to read every night but they dont help you write your paper. But he does tell you all the technical stuff he wants in the papers.
Dr Fike is extremely hard. He lacks personality and interest. He should retire from his job. Class discussions are pretty useless to the papers on top of his strict requirements for the HMXP papers. It is wise to pick another professor if you are not an ENGL major.
He is a tough professor, but if you do what he asks, you'll do well. Just do what he suggests on the paper and never say anything bad about Jung!
This guy often gets a bad rap, but I learned a lot in his class. He can be very strict at times and he will kick you out of class if you come unprepared, but after the first few weeks you'll see he's not so bad. The paper guidelines are very thorough, so writing them is not too hard. Do what he asks, you should do fine.
At first you may think he's boring and talks constantly, but he is by far an excellent professor once you get used to him. He's very particular and precise with what he wants in his papers and provides clear helpful feedback. He is also punctual with returning papers. ALWAYS come to his class prepared!!!
Dr. Fike knows a lot about Shakespeare (and about Jung). However he is also very outdated in terms of grammar. He would mark something in my work as a mistake even when I could show him the MLA guide or a grammar book to prove him wrong.
Lacks personality, painfully boring & monotonal. Tough grader, very detailed. Usually unclear, unless he explains something at least 5 times. ALWAYS BE PREPARED, or you have to leave. Personally, I did not look forward to the class, its awful no matter who teaches it. Overall, Fike's not so bad, but he wouldnt be my first choice...
Hard teacher, disrespectful & demeaning toward students: NO flexibility w/assignments; if 10 minutes late or leave 10 minutes early U R absent. No food only H20 to drink. WTC help is no help,
If you're looking to get an easy A, keep looking. If you're looking to learn something, he is your man. He is very strict on grading, but he is always willing to meet outside of class. I can honestly say that I learned a lot in this class and it helped me to better my writing skills. Oh, and if you come to class unprepared, you'll be kicked out.
Dr. Fike is not someone to take if you are looking for an easy A! Yeah, he actually expects students to work hard. If you make an appointment with him in his office hours, you'll always do well on the papers. He's not easy, but you will never be unsure of what you have to do in terms of assignments. Paper prompts are 5-6 pages plus. ALWAYS!
This is not an easy class, but if you go to his office hours, it might make it better. He is not too clear with his prompt for his papers and sometimes he talks to you like you are child. Not a very good teacher in my mind, but attendance is a must or he will deduct points off your grade. Bright side is he offers extra credit worth up to 10 pts.
This man is a genius. If you're not taking his class, you're missing out.
Dr. Fike has a rather intimidating reputation so I was pretty terrified to take his class... but, guys... he's really not that bad. Yes, there's a lot of work. Yes, you have to actually try. But the man is a GENIUS and he is always willing to help. Plus he's really freakin' cute when he smiles. Like his face lights up and you just can't hate him.
Dr. Fike is an amazing professor. There aren't many courses I will miss as much as this one. He is incredibly smart and is extremely willing to help any student that comes to his office. I will say that his paper requirements are very specific, but he will tell you exactly how to fix the problem. Great professor for students who desire to learn.
Dr. Fike is a great professor. Yes he has a tough reputation but he really isn't that bad. CRTW was one of my favorite classes this semesters just based off of the class discussions. There are several papers you must write but his requirements are a lot simpler than other teachers. He always gives full outlines and details of what he wants.
Dr. Fike is not the easiest professor - you do have to work! However, he is willing to work just as much as you do. He outlines all of your papers and tells you exactly what he wants. He also types out detailed feedback for each paper you write. He is helpful and funny.
One of the best profs I have had at Winthrop so far! At first Fike and I butted heads, but he taught me techniques to become a better writer. Although it may not seem like it, he really cares for his students. Wanted to take him for CRTW but he isn't teaching it next semester. Loved this class!!
Dr. Fike is nice and funny. However, his quizzes are killer for your grade. You have to really really know the material that you have read in class beforehand. He teaches well but it is a lot of information. Definitely look over his power points before a quiz! Do the discussion questions after each reading to prepare for the final exam!!!
Dr. Fike is an incredibly brilliant man, and if you can get over the horror stories you're going to love his classes. I went into British Lit with a distaste for it and came out with more knowledge and appreciation for the subject than I ever have in any class/subject. If your desire is to come out of college educated, Fike will help you get there.
Awful, awful, awful! Avoid at all costs! I've never had a teacher grade papers so harshly. It feels like he takes off points just because he feels like it. Pickiest guy ever! This class is pointless but he thinks the class is so important and that your life depends on it. Words can't describe how horrible this dude is.
Dr. Fike... is a great professor, but at times difficult. I found myself enjoying the plays, but I hated going to class. The class is mainly flipped, where the students do most of the talking. If you are quiet and never have much to say it will hurt your participation grade. The paper is a doozy, but if you take every step seriously you'll do great.
Although he definitely is an expert in all things Shakespeare, he is unclear with assignments and his power points are confusing. He will meet with you outside of class, but has the tendency to talk down to you. It may just be a personality thing? Regardless, just make sure you do the reading and turn everything in on time.
I would rather dropout than to take another class of his. Avoid at all costs. But if you have to take him, good luck.
I originally signed up with another professor based off of here on rate my professor but for some reason he taught the class anyway. He clearly outlines what he wants for papers so if you stick to it you'll be fine. If you go to the writing center he will give EC. His lectures can be boring but if you participate it won't be as bad. Hes passionate
I did not like Dr. Fikes class because of the approach he takes to grades. Papers are the only assignments we had and I slaved over those papers but somehow managed to get the same exact grade with basically the SAME comments on each oneeven though I corrected each problem on my previous paper. Not a very good or enjoyable class.
Dont take this class. Seriously. He added an attendance grade at the end of the semester and then took it away on the last day of classes so everyones grade dropped 10 points. If you have to take him, I wish you luck my friend.
I found Dr. Fike to be respectful and on task, but the positives were quickly shadowed by the negatives. I found him monotone, lacking in personality, and unable to connect with younger audiences. Strict grading with extremely detailed guidelines made passing this class with a B very stressful considering each main paper was 20% of our grade.
I went in wondering why people have told me to stay away from his classes. Now I know why. Boring, hard, and no personality.
So far my class has only been graded on essays. No matter how many discussion boards we do and what we say, we do not get credit. He is an extremely hard grader. I met with him once to go over an essay and it was not helpful. I was straight As in high school but I am struggling to hold that in his class. He grades tough.
I heard this class would be super hard and that he is a tough grader. He is, but if you take the time at the beginning of the semester to read through his requirements they aren't that bad. He is tough, but he really cares about his students and is frustrated when they do not perform well. He is extremely encouraging and intelligent.
He's just not good at his job
While I enjoyed that he stuck to his class schedule it felt as if he does not care at all for any students. Rather than making me want to learn it seems like he was shaming me for getting things wrong. It's so stressful. Things like that make me avoid doing the work and avoid asking for help.
His grading is more insulting than it is helpful. Not kind at all. This did more harm than good when it came to my writing.
The reading he assigns is egregiously long, and he seems to care for the things he teaches but has a hard time connecting with the students. The material is something he's very interested in, but if he feels your interpretation of a particular poem/epic is incorrect, he will call you out on it and it feels discouraging.
Fike isn't for everyone. He can be vague/unspecific about assignments and the assignments aren't easy. This isn't an easy breeze-through class. He's not a bad professor, he grades fairly and wants you to do the best you can. He pushes you because he knows you can do better. Just don't expect to be babied.
If you expect to not write a lot do not take this class. We were required to write almost 2 essays each week due to the way his academic calendar is set up. Spontaneously gives projects while we are in the middle of another project. Expect to be called on due to how small the class is. Workload ; 3 6-page papers, and 5 out of 8 unit papers
Very heavy on papers and reading. Strict grading and does not offer enough help for essays. Will call you out for almost anything that deems "distracting" to him. He's boring, hard to connect with because he picks at everything you say if it's not up to his standards. Very opinionated and makes you feel like you don't know what you're talking about
Fike's ability to teach is not strong. He is boring to listen to, and isn't able to engage his audience appropriately. He leaves rude comments on papers. When I went to his office hours for a paper, he told me what to do in order to get an A, I did exactly what he said, I got a 84 instead and he marked the things he told me to do wrong.
Dr. Fike is definitely the most stern professor I've had to deal with. He isn't mean, but he's a very tough grader. This class was super stressful because of his teaching and grading, and I wouldn't recommend you take this class with him as your professor. He's a good guy, but a VERY tough teacher. Good luck to his future students.
I had a very rough time in his class. I asked for help multiple times but was insulted a lot. I was told that it does not matter how much work I put into his class. In other words, if you're smart, you're smart. If you're stupid, you're stupid. I felt like most of his lectures were pointless, and the skills I learned I will never use again.
Not a fan. I ignored the bad reviews because I have never had a problem with a teacher but when he did answer any email with a question I may have had, he spoke very condescending and would tell me I should try reading the assignment. Also a tough grader. May be a fine person, but would not recommend as a professor.
i hated this guy
Avoid Fike at all costs. I have never had such a cold, unapproachable professor. His lectures are egregiously long. He is easily irritated and snaps over little things. He will not excuse any absence, regardless of its legitimacy or adherence to school policy and is an extremely picky grader. The drop rate on his classes should speak for itself.
As I like to say, Dr. Fike is the "Gordon Ramsay of the English Department". Think of him as a drill sergeant for English, as he is fairly cold, strict, and unforgiving when it comes to grading. If you are able to survive Dr. Fike, you will survive any other class. However, I lost my love for writing after this class.
Fike? Yikes. From the beginning he had a very dismissive and arrogant omen. Almost feels as though he hates people, however, I do not know this guy. I succeeded in passing all of my assignments, failed due to receiving a -5% for an attendance grade. In order to pass, you must treat him like he is king. Kiss his hiney! Truly traumatizing experience.
Do not take, he is an extremely harsh grader. 3 essays make up the entirety of his class.
This man is a perfect example of a scholar that should not be teaching. His love and care for Shakespeare is evident, but he does not possess the knowledge to be a teacher. He hands out worksheets that are vague in their instruction, but he is strict in the discussion. Not to mention there are concepts on the worksheets we have not gone over.
This is the class that every English major dreads because he is the only professor to teach it. He has an aura where he expects you to know just as much as he does about Shakespeare which is frustrating. He goes over many psychological concepts but does not explain what they are. Also, he has a cold demeanor and it doesn't make you feel welcomed.
The problem is that this is the only prof to teach the required English 305 at WU. Students are basically forced to sign up for his class to graduate. He is not approachable or welcoming to feedback. He grades work based on grammar rather than content. Many students would not take his class if it wasnt a unnegotiable requirement to earn a degree.
He is a nice human being outside of lectures. However, he is extremely harsh over minor grammar mistakes, mis pronouncing a word during presentation/lecture, gets upset when class talks abt something slightly off topic from text, snappy, does not like when students discuss general public. I personally would not take his class again unless I have to.
i would not recommend fike. his feedback is incredibly condescending (he quite literally commented "ick" on one of my papers). he does not value student analysis or interpretation; if you do not align with his exact opinionated reading of texts you are wrong. he has been outwardly rude and disrespectful to students during class discussions.
Lots of people give Fike a bunch of shade for how tough he is, and yeah he's not easy. But honestly... if you would just try you wouldn't struggle much. Everyone I know who failed or did bad in his class is someone who tries to skirt by on things and is just a bad student overall. If you can focus and be a grown up you will have no problems.
Professor Fike is incredibly smart but unfortunately extremely rude and condescending at times (will literally leave comments on your paper such as "no" without any other information). If being torn down helps you become better at whatever you're doing, great, take Fike. If not, run in the other direction.
this class and this teacher sent me to the psych ward for 4 days, i'm not even joking. Do whatever you can to avoid this teacher at all costs, if he's the only option available it would be better to wait until next semester for a different teacher.
Professor Fike has a very specific teaching style, but if you engage with it, the class can be manageable. Utilize resources like Unstuckstudy and the free textbook to stay on top of the heavy workload.
Other than correcting my emails, Dr. Fike is a very intelligent person. He gives amazing advice on how to improve your essays. However, he does remind me of one of those "there no such thing as a 100" type of teacher.
