Interesting lectures. He is really into the material. Only negative are quizzes but ok if you read. And so HOT!
Matt is a great professor. I learned a lot from the class through his lectures. i did not like his "surprise quizzes" but that is how he reinforces the homework readings. There's a midterm, final and two papers one you have to read a book for. Stay to the point, write exactly what he requests on the paper guidelines and you'll be alright.
Had Matt for Amer. Pop. Music and US Hist 102. Great professor to take for Summer. Knowledgeable, cool, easygoing, passionate, energetic. Put forth the effort you will not get less than a B in his class. Attendance mandatory, quizzes not hard, provided you skim the readings. Gives LOTS to read. Class participation important. Definitely recommended.
I had him over the summer and he's a very good professor. Very engaging in his lectures and entertaining. Given his personality, his grading isn't as easy as you'd expect, but it's not draconian or anything. I'd recommend him to history and non-history majors.
Pretty easy, and a nice guy who could be funny sometimes. Dont like the surprise quizzes and I didnt do too good on them but still got a good grade in class. Exams are easy and he gives a generous grade on his paper assignment
Wonderful professor. Took his US HIST 1 in Fall, 2007. His lecture was fascinating and I really enjoyed it a lot. Never like history in my life, but fell in love with it after his class. Unfortunately, I dropped all my classes in Spring 2008, missed his HIST 2. Wish he teaches in Summer, so I could take his class again. Awesome professor. P
Finally someone made history FUN! This is the class to take! The guy is a rear combination of skills, brains, looks, energy and humor. The BEST Professor I?ve ever had! The readings he chooses are fascinating and his ability to employ your own experience in understanding the material is amazing. And on the top of that he?s HOT, HOT, HOT !!!
Took him in the summer-- Overall, Great lectures. Alot of reading. Journal entries (every week), one paper, and one exam. Pretty much, if you're engaged with the class- it's hard not to do well, unless you don't read. Nice guy and one of the better professors at Rutgers
Friedman is amazing!! He makes the class interesting and basically if you fail the class its because you were trying! He collects daily papers 5 times randomly but usually hints that he will be picking up. 1 large paper due at the end of the semester and 1 short 4-5 page paper due mid-semester. Great teacher take him for 101 and 102.
Good guy, made class interesting, however you need to try! Not an easy A if you slack off! Alot of writing and reading required, but if you actually do the work you will be fine, otherwise take another class! :)
He is a good guy, he is willing to help students when he can. Extremely helpful and informative on grading papers. Do the work and follow his directions, you will sure to enjoy history class. He is into eclectic stuff but is willing to share his thoughts and also hear students thoughts. Enjoy
He is great take him if you can. Very funny and will work very hard with you, he will only fail you if you want to fail. He makes history interesting.
Easy, helpful, & funny!! Take him..he's a great professor !!
He is an awesome professor who is so charming and interestead in his work that it makes you want to pay attention in class. However, for his class there is a lot of readings and responses that one is responsible for (10 to be exact) on top of a midterm and a final paper. This class equals a lot of writing but he is a great professor.
An upbeat professor, but beware that in most classes, he keeps you for up to 5 minutes overtime, which in fact does annoy most of the people.
Class was very interesting def knows his stuff, twice a week responses of which you don't know are collected, readings are boring and lengthy but just write a two page summary to get like an A in the hw , exams are not that bad, mostly essays to be exact but he is a good prof., the negative part is that he keeps you a few mins late after class
Engaging, highly knowledgeable, articulate (recommend highly). 2 readings (often difficult to comprehend) req'd for each class for which 2-pg. summaries are collected every several classes. 5 tests not too hard. Short & long paper req'd. He is fair. Loved him and sure you will also. Highly recommend.
Immense amount of reading and writing. About 20-60 pages to read for each summary(hw) assignment.
Excellent professor. Lots of Reading and writing. 5 Exams (very simple), 1 short paper (2 pages), Final Paper (1300-1800) words and a final Exam that includes Identification questions, short answers, and a mini essay. He collects five summaries at random from the readings. Very knowledgeable. Easy A if you do all readings and summaries.
It was a pretty good class, a lot of reading though because he collects summaries randomly. I find his grading on the exams a little harsh. Attendance is mandatory. Other than that, he's really fun loves to joke around
He's sp funny. you will laugh to dead if u take his classes. a lot of readings and collect 5 summaries randomly. Quizes and exams are not hard as long as you do the reading and study for exams
Freidman is the man, I took him for US HISTORY I & II Fall 2012, & Spring 2013. Best History professor at rutgers. He is very interesting, he always makes the class laugh, and his quizzes are fairly easy, As long as you keep up with your work the class is a breeze. I definitely recommend taking him.
Fantastic Professor! Took his Vietnam War History class because it was the only one that fit my schedule. Extremely funny but class is no joke! Reading is a must and there are lots of response papers. There are quizzes but he will announce when they will be and they are simple. Read and participate. He grades stern, stern but fair.
Great Professor. Very funny. He made this class interesting. I would definitely take him again if I had to.
Friedman has a test every other week which gets annoying. The summaries are mandatory and take up sometime, but the worst things are the short papers which he assigns a week before because he wants you to "work for it". These are the single worst part of this class. This class actually takes up more of my time that my four other classes.
Great teacher! Very funny. Do the work, pay attention, participate and you will do fine.
Great class and professor. Do all Summaries and do not copy from Websites. Must Have Text Packet, you will not pass wout it. Cite Cite Cite. Remember the chronology of events and figures. Recommend: Read ahead once and then read again. Do Assignments ahead of time from syllabus.
He's a great teacher, but he's Canadian. Good class, tons of reading. Just a shame he's not funny and he tries to be. Shame.
Best Professor I've taken in my entire college career. This guy makes history interesting by tying it to the present. He's also extremely hilarious. I don't think I've ever been bored in his class. He's also a pretty fair grader. Would definitely recommend.
One of the best professors I had in Rutgers. I think he's funny and makes the class very interesting. Must read the packet and do the summaries, it will help you pass. Take notes on top of the slides because it will help you with the quiz. Easy A but you must put some effort ! Cant expect an A for just showing up.
He knows his stuff! However, he makes corny jokes all of the time. He assigns 2 page papers every week, and quizzes every other week. You have to read super long documents and articles before every class. But he really loves teaching American History and other History courses so it makes you get interested. IF YOUR A HISTORY MAJOR TAKE FRIEDMAN!
Changed his policy, now quizzes are ON the syllabus, no surprises. He collects 5 summaries at random, but I found-he collects summaries the class BEFORE a test. If test is Monday, he'll collect previous Wednesday. Midterm and final are based on summaries so do them! Got a B+ easy, missed a summary and didn't study for midterm enough
Prof. Friedman was excellent. He assigns a lot of reading, often boring but his lectures are interesting. He's funny and passionate about history, which is surprising because he is Canadian. He assigns a few papers and expect summary collections and weekly quizzes.
Great teacher, really cares for his students! Would take another class with this professor if given the chance!
I'm only a freshman at Rutgers University, and I can say whole heartedly that I am NEVER taking another one of his classes again. Basically if you take notes and study them, the best grade you'll probably receive is a C. He chooses the small details for exams, and by the way you have one exam every two lectures. Too much work for a history class.
The class was extremely interesting, I recommend the course for anyone, contemporary history is critical for all. The readings were physically impossible for me to finish, around 50+ pages due each class. Keeping up is a lot of work, however not nessecasy, just do the 4 essays and movie review and you'll get an easy A. I recommend keeping up though
He's an amazing lecturer. He makes boring stories into interesting, relatable events, and is funny, too. I enjoyed being in the classroom. HOWEVER. If you do not take a billion notes and do the billion readings, you won't do well on tests. Studying is like searching for a piece of hay in a needle stack: painfully difficult.
This was a tough class, but Friedman is a great professor. He makes class very interesting. Attendance is required. The exams were annoying, but only because he wants very specific answers for the short answer questions. I always felt that I had the right answer, but I ended up getting partial credit only. He grades the papers a bit less harshly
Dr. Friedman is an excellent teacher. I would recommend him to anyone, especially if you are a history major (which I'm not but still). You do a lot of reading. Don't miss any of it and do the summaries. Even though he doesn't collect all, it helps. And buy the course pack. He lets you use it on the final and it cheaper than printing.
For an intro gen-ed class, this was alot of work. Insane amount of readings and a test every other week. He is also paranoid about cheating and plagiarism so don't cheat because he will find out! 3 hour class, but we never got out early once. He was very hard to reach this semester and slow to hand back papers and other things. Nice guy and funny
This is one of my favorite Professors at Rutgers. His lectures are very interesting, and not hard. emphasis on not hard, his class is easy, but at the same time very informational. His lectures single handedly got me interested in History. Take him.
Honestly, best history professor. He's engaging, he loves history and loves making jokes to keep students involved. Even at 8:30AM everyone is awake and paying attention cuz this guy is so passionate. Also, quizzes aren't hard. Just read the articles and you'll be fine. One-page summaries aren't hard. He's always there for students.
he's an amazing professor, very funny. it's also very easy to pass his class just do all the work. he's very friendly and helpful, i would totally recommend. you will not be bored in his class!
Nice guy, too much work. Assigns 2 film reviews, 2 podcasts (10 min in class presentation about readings which you have to go his office with him after and record too), research paper (12-15 pages), and a final exam. He's a really harsh grader. If you're a history major take him by all means. Don't take him for the gen eds it's way too much work.
He's a good lecturer. With that being said, don't take him you'll regret it. WAY too much work. Do yourself a favor and take an easier class. Also when it comes to grading assignments he's really unclear with what he wants and marks it wrong if it isn't the specific answer he's looking for.
Great Lecturer! If you want to learn I recommend him, however, it will be a challenge. He expects a lot and gives a lot. Be prepared to spend hours reading and getting projects done. He is also really funny and explains things well. But, dont expect the same clarity in work feedback. 2 Group projects are also given.
Lots of reading. His grading methods are in particular very unclear. That is, he doesn't explain what he's really looking for. His lectures were good and he explains history well but if you want to do well without devoting 80% of your time to a single class then look elsewhere.
He was alright, definitely not the worst. If you like history and reading a lot you'll enjoy his class. He's a good lecturer but his tests are a little hard because he wants really specific answers. He's very friendly.
Insane amounts of reading. Not something I'd want to do again. His grading doesn't make much sense either. As in the assignment is really vague but when he grades he's really specific. Try to avoid if you can.
This guy was really tough. Paper was like 15 pages we had 100+ pages reading due and he didn't really have an actual structure to his class. Wouldn't recommend.
Class was extremely hard. SO MUCH READING.
Literally one of the worst classes at Rutgers. His lectures were interesting but everything else was lacking (unclear criteria, hard to reach, immense readings, etc).
I was glad I took Friedman, because he showed me how much work you have to put in to do well in college. His lectures are entertaining and amazing, he clearly LOVES history. But he expects you to know EVERYTHING from the lectures, and gives A LOT of readings, dozens of pages even. The final is out of class, but if you're a bad writer don't take him
Honestly, the class is a lot of reading. People should expect that from college level courses though. The readings are interesting and will help you write better essays. There are 3 essays for the class, almost bi-weekly tests. If you pay attention and take good notes, you will do fine on the the tests, I know I did! He's a really interesting guy.
Prof. Friedmann is awesome! Definitely a tough grader and gives amaaazing lectures! You will be awake the entire time! He exerts a lot of energy and is very understanding if you talk to him. There's a lot of assignments but they're spread out; 2 of them require watching a movie which are ace! You don't really need the book.
Avoid. This course should be a 4 credit course not 3. I had to write two five page papers for his class and the exams are very difficult and test you on such a wide range of topics and themes that it's very tough to get an A. Insane amount of reading. Avoid
took US 101. The worst experience. This professor needs to relax on the course load because 80% of my effort was devoted to his class last semester. Grading is harsh because we don't know what he wants out of the wide range of materials he presents. avoid him if you can
One of the worst professors at RU. I thought the grading was not clear at all. You don't know what he looks for because there isn't much constructive feedback. The lectures do not help out any of your outside assignments. Take him at your own risk
Horrible teacher. Online class. He's not even involved in the discussion board and takes weeks and weeks to grade things. No announcements. Work load is insane but you don't know how you are doing because he doesn't grade things on time. zero star and not recommended.
The worst experience over this summer before my graduation. He is one of the worst I've had at RU. You have no idea what is going to be on the exam, because he does not tell you. Even if you learn the materials in the lectures thoroughly you have to deal with random surprises. Incredibly harsh when grading your papers and blogs to so stay away
Part of being a good professor is knowing how to balance the course so the students will enjoy and learn the materials. He turns a three credit gen ed history course into a six credit history lab. Avoid this guy for your sanity.
If you need to take a his class for your core credits, avoid this guy at all costs. He assigns just too much work for an intro level course and will stack up unnecessary stress in your semester. You are required to read more than 50 articles throughout the semester and write two papers. On top of this, you have exams, blogposts, and discussions.
Unreasonable amount of work. It's writing intensive. The instructor is very tough on papers and does not provide feedbacks on why he takes off points. The final exam is three hours long. Take him at your own risk
This summer online class was the hardest thing I've done in my life. He gives no details about exams except the format and tests you randomly on subjects he covered throughout the course. In regards to grading, he doesn't grade anything until the last minute so you will be praying for your grade. The worst instructor.
I regret taking this mans class. He is just a tough grader who takes a lot of points without any ANY feedbacks. In regards to lecture, it is very heavy and you have to read around 70 articles during the entire semester.
This was one of the courses I took in my last semester at Rutgers and was the WORST course I've taken here. It's not a fair game because there are readings, papers, exams, blogs, discussion boards that require you to go beyond hours of a 3 credit course. On top of that he grades very harshly without ANY feedbacks.
Too much reading and really hard grading. You won't learn much either he goes off topic a lot. The other people aren't kidding when they say you'll read a ridiculous amount during this class. Avoid.
Contemporary America- Prof made history interesting to learn about. You don't have to read the textbook or course documents if you take notes. No quizzes or exams, just papers. About 8 to 9 (4 response papers,2 films reviews, 1 research paper, & the final). I would not take his class again because of all the papers, but he's a good lecturer.
I had taken this Professor twice while attending Rutgers. If you are the type of person that does not put the work as far the required reading and do not participate during the lectures this class is not for you. also if you just cut and paste your papers you will not receive a decent grade. A very good instructor
Gives a crazy amount amount of reading (2 documents for every class), you do not have to read them all. He randomly asks for summaries on the documents, but will email beforehand, so just read those. Tests are online, as long as you pay attention in class and take notes, he will tell you everything on test and what info from the readings to know.
So much reading and insanely hard grader. Not worth the effort. Literally took him because I had to.
Insane amount of reading for a 3 credit class. Hard grader with papers. Very picky with exam questions, and strict with partial credit. You must participate every now and then or you'll go down a letter grade
He didn't make grading requirements clear and material was difficult to understand.
This guy would go off track all the time. His projects had very unclear guidelines and his grading requirements were very strict and unclear as well. Way too much reading.
I took Professor Friedman a few semesters back for U.S. 1 and U.S. 2. He's an amazing professor; he made history incredibly exciting and made it fun to learn. There are a lot of readings and he randomly emails you beforehand for summaries. Exams were online and not bad at all. He told us what to focus on. In general, one of the best professors!
He grades papers very harshly. And he doesnt tell you what hes looking for before assigning the paper. Youll lose points basically for things you didnt know he wanted in the first place.
Extremely tough grader. You feel like you followed the instructions given on written assignments only to get a C grade and be penalized for not including things he never mentioned to.
Prof Friedman is an absolute blast to have as a professor. He makes history class one where you don't fall asleep because of his stories and humor. He does give a LOT of readings and you may find yourself slacking off in his class due to this but take notes about what he says on the slide show, actually do the readings and you'll get a good grade.
Insanely tough doesnt really specific what hes looking for on assignments. Not worth taking dont recommend if you want to do well without dedicating your semester to a single class.
Guy assigns too much reading. His course will take up all of your time. And his grading didnt make sense.
Really tough grader. Doesnt explain what he wants in his papers clearly till after he grades it and tears your paper apart. The amount of reading as well was insane. Def dont recommend.
His class is hell, we had essays everyday then gave less than 2 days for 4 page papers. He assigned a final with multiple choice, 2 short answers, and an entire essay in the same week of having another paper due and still giving classwork. He isn't clear with what he wants, he'll take points off and not explain why. He never answers emails.
Professor Freidman is an excellent lecturer. He is an chill grader. He is very real and open with his students.
I felt that he was a good professor, and he liked to crack jokes a lot. He barely gave any work some were hard, but some were pretty easy. The one thing I didn't like was that he was horrible at answering emails or messages on Canvas. He has only answered one of my many emails this semester and that was 5 days after I sent the email.
Great professor but it was just convenient. All assignments, midterms and exams are online. Attendance is mandatory but he doesn't post an actual grade on Canvas. Learned that his syllabus isn't as strict as it sounds. Also, I sent him five emails throughout the semester, he only replied to one which should say a lot. Other than that, good prof.
Honestly don't understand the low rating. He's a nice man, his teaching style is just him yapping the whole class. All assignments and exams are online and he gives a fair amount of time before they're due. You don't have to participate in class and he doesn't pick on you. I'd recommend taking his class for a history req.
The whole semester he doesn't respond to any of your emails. If you are in need of extra help it's hard to get in contact with him. He also ends up picking apart your final paper after not being helpful at all. He's very nice and funny, he just makes it difficult to get a good grade even if you try hard. I don't recommend taking him.
it's hard to communicate with him I wish it was that hard. It affects your grade
This professor is very nice ignore the bad ratings. Just work extra hard in his class he doesn't respond to emails but try ur best
I wouldn't recommend this class. It's too hard, especially online. The workload is overwhelming compared to my other online class, which has just one quiz, one discussion post, and one essay. Here, we have multiple discussions and lengthy journal entries each week. The midterm is also challenging, requiring Chicago style formatting without support
or anyone who's taking this course online please don't take any of us online classes avoid it at all costs. there is a whole book missing for the midterm exam on his canvas for his online class i mad as hell rn sturggling to write without the book
2 thumbs down Where do I begin about this fn first you need the book you have to rent it I was on military orders he wanted my admin department to send a email which they did and HE DONT RESPOND BACK quick to say he busy he make you feel like you begging him to help which like brah you the professor DO THE DISCUSSION he adds grades no warning btw
Great lectures that keep students interested, but he doesn't share the lecture slides. Lots of writing, the midterm and final will likely be a paper. Attendance is mandatory. Also he makes it a point that you have to like reading to take his classes.
This class is very lecture heavy. All the classes are just lecture never any work in the class. Before each class you have to read a textbook chapter which is at least 30 pages plus at least 2 other reading. Some weeks you may read over 200 pages. Less than 10 assignments including the midterm and final. Fairly easy grader. Great Professor though.
