Very good professor. Always available outside of class for help. He gives hard tests, but prepares you for them very well.
Great professor, I recommend taking him for 301. The exams were difficult but he is extremely helpful via email or office hours.
Good prof, but he is tough for how to teach students based on the exact teaching structure, sometimes NO PPTs. The exam is really hard hard hard but if you are a nature-speaker, perhaps the his course is good.
Great professor. 10/10 would recommend for 301. With that being said, this is a very difficult course, but this professor makes himself very available and is very helpful in office hours.
Professor Friedman is one of, if not the best, econ professor I've ever had. Amazing lectures. The materials are really engaging, and he definitely knows how to deliver them. Weekly homework is hard and requires some effort, but they prepare you well for the exams.
Prof. Friedman is a cool professor who is definitely passionate and really intelligent, but if you want to take a course where you read 100 pages a week in a text book that has 0 examples, do difficult problem sets, and are expected to know the jargon as if it were first hand knowledge, this is the class for you.
The problem set is due every!! week and I usually spend so many hours on it. The project is tough too and I don't know why there are so many extra things to write, let alone the demanding white paper.
Friedman is a funny and accessible professor. His exams are pretty hard, but his curves adjusts for the extreme difficulty. All in all, I'd only take his class again if the material was less difficult. Enjoy him, not his class.
Friedman is hands down the coolest prof at UW. He seems to know something about anything and is a great lecturer who routinely takes half of class just to go over a problem that will be on the exam. Exams are really hard, but he is the most accessible prof I've ever had, and if you just put in the work and review the problem sets you will do well
Friedman is a really cool guy but his class is crazy hard. Problem sets take 3-5 hours out of class each week to do and some of them are so hard he just gives us the answers. Exams are also crazy hard, he takes the concepts you've learned and puts an unexpected twist on them so it's impossible to study. Nice guy but take another professor
Econ 690 is a very hard class. I spend hours doing the problem sets everyweek. Most of the problem sets have difficult instructions and without previous knowledge of Python would be very difficult to complete.
Great professor! Friedman gives nice lecture and is very accessible after class. Exams are hard but they are curved. Also, reviews sessions and extra online office hours can help you prepare well for the exam. Recommend to choose Dr. Friedman if you really want to learn something in econ.
Avoid his upper level classes like the plague, worst class I've taken at UW. Extremely unorganized, takes forever to grade things, insanely long and difficult problem sets weekly ON TOP of a semester long research paper called a "White Paper". Had entire problem sets requiring complex Python coding after attempting to teach us it for a week.
I will start that Dr. Friedman is one of the coolest professors I've ever had. I've also never seen a professor work so hard. That being said, I had the grave misfortune of taking two of his classes simultaneously, insane amount of work, tough as hell exams, mandatory attendance, super intimidating to ask questions to. You might fail, be warned.
Nice guy, however he makes this class unreasonably and unnecessarily hard. He gives out lengthy problem sets every week that take 3-5 hours to complete with difficult instructions. It is nearly impossible to study for the exams because the exams were all 10x harder than any of the practice materials he gave us. Choose literally any other professor.
Smart guy, kind of arrogant. Knows what he's talking about though. Never had any idea what I was doing on the exams (neither did anybody else). I think I failed both midterms but they were curved to a B. Work with people on the problem sets. and don't wait til the last minute. Don't use Chegg or you won't learn anything. HARD EXAMS!!!!!
I know this is a new class at UW, but it was very poorly executed. The ten problem sets can take up to 20 hours a week to finish, on top of a semester long white paper project that took over 60+ hours to finish over the semester. Friedman doesn't teach the basics of coding before going into massively confusing methods of doing so. Avoid if possible
Mr. Friedman is a charismatic, energetic, stoic, helpful character with sharp wit and quick mental math skills. However, The book (which you must read) is opaque. The homework load is awful. Midterms and Finals are utterly draconian. The course takes your will to live and snaps it like a twig.
Dr. Friedman has really high expectations for his students and tries to demonstrate that through his extremely difficult tests. That being said, he clearly cares about his students and is very accessible outside of class. You will do fine in this class, as long as you do the homework and find peers to study with. Totally doable class.
This class was hard. Like, really hard. Huge gap between his expectations versus our backgrounds/skills/time that we could spend on his class. Is he a good professor? Yes. Does he care and value effort? Yes. Was this class well executed? No. Should it have been less than 5 credits? No.
I feel that Prof Friedman gives a solid foundation for linear regression throughout most of the class. Once you hit the last 4 weeks the class moves to what feels like a dozen different models in 4 weeks. The speed ramps up so quickly you don't have time to wipe the tears from your face before the next slide shows up. Pretty good professor though.
Lectures for this class are very worthless. The hardest thing about this class is learning and having assignments on how to use Stata the entire semester but have all the exam content be on hand written problems that you are not once shown how to do, even in the slightest. Friedmann is a nice and caring guy, but avoid him for 400. Very Hard Class
Had Friedman in Fall 2020 during online class. He was not helpful at all and rarely if ever answered my emails. The only final exam study material he gave us was a MIDTERM from a few years ago with NO answer key. He did however allow for a self assessment out of ten points which accounted for 10% of your final grade. Still would do again.
He tries very hard to make classes interesting/accessible. However, he was not great at uploading lectures for online class. He's a funny and nice guy, but I think he doesn't realize how difficult some of his material is. I would still recommend Econ 455 though because it's neat material and he offers extra credit and self-graded participation.
First of all, I have to say professor Friedman is a good guy, but hes not good at teaching Econ400. He posts lectures irregularly with different length, and most of them are not helpful for either your exam or your homework. The homework is hard and is very different from what you get from lecture. The only helpful one is the TA.
Professor Friedman is terrible at teaching this course. He stands up at the front and just talks. The lectures are required, but provide no useful information. The class is incredibly unorganized. Most of the time the homework is impossible and requires you to look things up on your own. If you are not required to take this class do not take it.
The professor has no idea how to instruct students. Reading slides at a super fast pace and speaking jokes that are not funny. Really hard content and please avoid it!!
Avoid Matt at any cost! He doesn't teach in class. You need to learn by yourself! The quiz will cover things which haven't covered in class! Stata part goes very fast and most of students can't catch up! Avoid him at any cost!
Weekly quizzes are taken before content is covered in class, and weekly problem sets have incredibly vague directions. Most students around me cannot keep up in lecture, leading to falling overall lecture participation every week.
AVOID him at any costs. He is the worst professor I have seen. 1 Never upload solution to homework and quiz to canvas, even students asked him to do so. 2 He expected you to read the whole chapter and nail it before class, because his quiz will cover those materials even they have not been covered in class. 3 He often made mistakes in class.
AOIVD!! So disorganized and speaks too fast, and the quiz and problem set has little relationship with the lecture. He even do not upload PPT or any lecture material on canvas. Everyone is only taking a photo of his ppt in class. so strict on homework. He did not teach it before, but he asked you to know it, or receive a low grade.
DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!!! Although he claimed that attendance is not mandatory. He has in-class exercise randomly so you actually have to go to class every time! And you have to teach yourself. If you don't take his class, you only spend time learning by yourself. If you take his class, you waste 2.5 hours and also spend time learning by yourself.
Be prepared to teach yourself. He has you read the textbook and take a quiz on material before it is taught in class. Problem sets are excruciatingly long. TAs could teach the class better than him. Avoid if you can. We have 2 classes left and I have learned nothing and don't know my grade so far on the semester.
Matthew Friedman and Econ 400 made me question why this university is so expensive and why they hire people who have no desire to teach. Friedman does not care for his student and does not try to hide it. He is very pompous, but can never get his stata code right (does not prepare for lectures). He is not here to help, only out for himself.
He doesn't know how to teach he just puts paragraphs on slides, the problem sets are so hard and he can't even figure them out himself during class, overall disrespectful and clearly does not care about students, he can't grade the problem sets himself so he hires a grader so never up to date with grades
Definitely the worst experience I've had in a UW classroom. I don't know if he doesn't understand the content, or just doesn't care. Final is in 3 days and we still don't have stuff graded, and no answer key has been given for the practice exam. Avoid professor Friedman at any cost, this class has the worst course structure I've seen.
Only three days left. He didn't release all the answers to the quiz. He doesn't like teaching at all. Avoid him at any cost. It's completely a waste of time to take class with him.
It seems like he is purposefully withholding information from us. As an educator, he: 1) does not upload his lecture slides, 2) does not upload answers to weekly quizzes, 3) does not prepare for his lectures, and 4) does not help us with problem sets. If you're thinking of taking this class with him, don't bother.
Easily the most confusing class I have taken at UW. Never had a teacher make weekly quizzes on concepts that we do not cover in class. EXTREMELY late on turning in grades, at one point he was at least a month behind with our grades for problem sets and quizzes. Does not upload slides or record lectures. Would never recommend
I paid such huge amount of tuition, just to learn from youtube. I want my tuition back.
I am an economics major who decided to drop the major after taking this course. I have felt like a professor has failed me more, because of him I have all my interest in econ. This professor made me very sad.
Prof Friedman is tough professor, but he is overall decent for an econometrics professor. He goes over homework questions, but the weekly quizzes were basically impossible. I also spent a good amount of time on problem sets and I am not doing well on them which is frustrating. He takes forever to grade as well. Overall tho, he a good guy.
Merits: Very funny guy, helps us do part of the HW in the lecture from time to time. No midterm. Flaws: Slow grading, do not post answers to quizzes and few materials for the final exam. Also the lectures are a little tedious.
It is the worst class I have taken at UW. Matthew hates to teach students. Every student learns the course content entirely by reading the 600 pages book alone. I promise he will ruin the reputation of UW-Madison.
Matthew is a humorous and nice guy. He is very approachable through email and even phone calls. However, his lecture is very disorganized, and he never provides slides for us. Homeworks and quizs are also super hard.
Never release solutions to quiz. Final is today and I am still asking classmates for right answer. However, no one got it right.
By far the worse professor I have ever had at this University. Does not care about helping us learn the topics. Does not post lecture slides or any supplemental material. Teaches stats content terribly and overly complicates simple topics. The worst part- most of our grade was on quizzes that were on material not covered until the next week.
Very disrespectful. He is unclear on what he wants on papers and he doesn't show up for his own office hours. When discussing my paper, he wouldn't let me finish my sentences before arguing why I'm wrong. In OH, he asked me questions, but would cut me off after a couple words. He also makes insensitive remarks in lectures. Avoid if possible.
I was anticipating a rigorous and professionally taught behavioral economics course, as expected from UW-Madison. Dr. Friedman behaved absolutely unprofessionally in the one lecture I attended before I dropped it. He asked inappropriate questions to students even in front of the class. e.g. "Do you have a good relationship with your parents?"
He is hilarious, and I would say he cares about the subject matter; this saves him from getting a 1 star. The course is not cohesive at all, and he may be the worst professor I have had trying to explain course concepts. He also does not outline what is expected of students. Friedman just does not make this course worth taking.
Hands down best professor I've ever had at UW. I didn't know anything about behavioral economics before taking Econ455 with Prof. Friedman and was worried it would be difficult given the course level. The quizzes were hard, but curved. It was still a great class and I probably reference the concepts with friends and family at least once a month.
Friedman gets a 5 and class gets a 3 so average is 4. I didn't like the reading tests. Didn't always do reading. When I did the reading I still didn't get 100%. Otherwise than that it was a great course
Coding experience made this an easy class for me. The exams are easy and openbook/open note.
This was a great class to prep for data/coding interview. Covered lots of the interview algorithms and Prof. Friedman made the lectures super fun and entertaining. Let's students ask questions in class and helps with problem sets. Exam is take-home. easy A if you put in the effort to complete all the assignments and quizzes
I took this over the summer to graduate and it was intense. My job was working me like a dog and I barely had time for the class. Friedman was awesome...he answered the phone whenever I called and made things simple as possible. If you need a summer class to graduate take ECON455. Legendary!
This class is WAY easier than 410 and Matt is a chill grader. Don't need to get the textbook, just save the slides and lecture videos. Uses R instead of Stata, so if you don't know it you might have troubles.
Lectures are important, as well as the readings. The exam questions are from the problem sets. No easy questions. He has well organized notes that he shares before lecture.
I've had better teachers, but not many. Great class.
Great prof, great class.
One of my all time favorites. Behavioral is super interesting and light on math but super heavy on reading.
This class is a lot of work but not too difficult, just more than expected given my other econ class. The professor is pretty energetic. The examples in class are useful and help on the homework. Don't take this class if you plan to skip too many of the lectures, it will be rough.
I thought was going to be worse class but was OK. Not too many HW and test is open book and can use computer.
Class was way harder than my roommates 301 class. It was better prep for my major electives though - especially with a math emphasis in the major.
Econ + psych - math = behavioral. Good class if you like concepts but aren't about equations.
I like this class.
Friedman was good teacher for class, he talks to the student and answers questions in the class. Only final exam and it is easy. Quizzes are sooooo hard if you have not done all the reading. Friedman uses questions many times so ask friends for homework
One of my favorite econ classes and one of the best profs. Lectures are high energy and the topics are very interesting. Highly recommended.
One of the best professors I've had at the UW. He's extremely passionate about the class. This class is accessible for econ and non-econ majors given how little math is needed.
The class is mid tho Friedman is extra.
Decent professor, knows whats what and so forth. Tests are straightforward and way easier than the homework. Makes class interesting enough during the boring stuff. You won't clap but you won't fall asleep either.
Having taken grad classes at another school I can see how great Dr. F is. He is tough, but hIs class is hard because you learn a lot.
Very well organized. He makes the course informative and engaging.
Since 3.5 is not an option I rounded up.
Professor Friedman may seem intimidating, but he is professional and wants his students to succeed. The topic area is challenging and time-consuming, but the course is interesting. Unless you are totally unmotivated you will enjoy this class.
Professor Friedman is an amazing lecturer. He knows how to keep students intrigued. You will definitely learn a lot in this class, though the exams are absurdly difficult and crazy long. Like 10- 15 hours at home during finals week. You will be better off taking this course with a professor that gives easier exams.
My best memory from the clas was digging in my bag for a pencil. Dr. Friedman said "whatever you are looking for better be a candy bad because you are going to have to eat it". I don't know what he meant by that, but as luck would have it I had a leftover half of a sandwich in there. Everyone had a good laugh when I pulled it out.
I agree with other student fellows. Matt is one of those guys that you either like or don't - nothing in between. He comes off as arrogant, because he knows what he is talking about and he demands you must as well. He knows the subject really well, so enroll if you want to learn. If you dislike strong personalities his class isn't for you.
Don't take this course if you can't attend the lectures. The readings and notes are helpful for coding but useless for the project and exams. Ho,ework is easy enough but tedious. You can use it on the exams so if your stuff is organized it makes them easy.
Good class
Professor is very nice and care about students. His exams are to hard and take to much time so are very stressful.
He was an easy grade and good teacher. He is helpful if you need it. His tests are all open notes and book so take notes.
Incredible Instructor. Take this class.
Love love love Professor Friedman. He's an amazing teacher. Happy to help anytime of day or night if you have questions or need help. I used so much from his class on my portfolio interviews. He made some really difficult projects possible. One of my favorite econ professors. Tough grader but he curves the final so it wasn't so bad in the end.
Professor Friedman's Econ301 class was one of the first econ classes at UW. I took AP micro so I didn't have to take 101 and I was worried I would struggle. Classes were engaging and his encouragement made class fun. Exams were hard, but aside from the calc nothing crazy. Use office hours, it knocked out all my homework. I recommend this class
Friedman is one of my favorite professors of all time. He is engaging and funny. Always willing to help students. Attendance isn't required but it should be - every lecture is amazing. Tests are difficult, but if you worked hard he will give you the benefit of the doubt. Super teacher and class, best econ class for job relevant experience.
This class is work but the prof is an easy grader.
I appreciated Friedman's teaching style, especially after taking other econ classes at UW. Friedman did a much better job explaining models than my other professors. His lectures were very clear and provided lots of examples to reference on the homework. His notes are helpful on the exam and even in other classes. Plus it's cheaper - no textbooks.
He's sweet and kind. You can tell he cares about his students. Attendance isn't mandatory but you should go to class if you want an A. There are pop quizzes but they are announced, sounds weird but it works. Problems sets are nearly identical to the final exam, so understand them and you have an A in the bag.
I don't get what the big deal is. He was good or whatever, but not great like George Washington or Beyonc
The best of the best. He is a great teacher in the classroom and has been a mentor as well. Teaches real life situations, provides easy to follow examples, and has great insights. Highly recommend.
I really liked this class and will be taking his other class in the Fall. He is one of the better ECON profs...funny/entertaining. The class topics are interesting and the lectures are fun. Problem sets are easy enough but reading quizzes are tough. He is super helpful and easy-going when I emailed or called with questions
Professor Friendman is by far one of the best professors I've had in my four years here, he makes himself extremely available to students and also keeps his lectures fun and informative. The problem sets are tough and the weekly quizzes can sometimes catch you but if you stay on top of the work it's pretty easy to succeed.
Simply very messy guy, worst class I have ever taken at UW Madison! He's intentionally withholding knowledge and wouldn't share his slides/material
I loved this class and thought Dr Friedman did a great job of making the content fun to learn. I highly recommend this class.
Professor Friedman is definitely one of my favorite professors at Madison. He tries to interact with the class during lecture to make things fun and engaging. The content of the class is a bit challenging and if you're not 100% engaged during lectures you'll probably have to do a lot of studying, but it's nothing insane.
Professor Friedman is a great teacher and this is an awesome class! His assignments are fun, easy and the exams are easy too as long as you take notes and do the practice exams. He's super willing to help during office hours, if you ever have questions on any of the material.
My absolute fav! so great.
This class was an eye-opener. Coding is easy enough with the right online GPT, but the exams are brutal when I had to code on my own. The curve is pretty fair though and I did better then expected. Take the course of you want to learn to code, but if you are just rounding up credits there are easier ways.
Prof. Friedman was awesome! I have had really bad experiences with the ECON department at UW but he's amazing. My only complaint is the readings are a little confusing and weren't really that helpful.
Amazing instructor. You can tell he cares about his students as people. The class is fun and pretty easy. Would definitely recommend him for any class.
I took his summer class! He is very nice and you learn a lot. Most amazing professern who grades fair and give feedbacks. He writes personalized comments on all assignments. It was easy class.
Matt makes Python easy to learn. This class is a LOT of work, but you cover a ton of algorithms and if you show up you should be fine. Go to office hours and use the recorded tutorials. Im a total novice so if you know even a little about Python you can easily get A's on the quizzes/homework/labs. Open notes on finals and midterms!
Super chill class. One quiz per week plus final exam and your done. Professor will answer questions over the phone and responds quickly to emails. Study the lecture videos, that stuff showed up heavy on the final
What can I say about Prof. Matt? He's the one of the most funny and dynamic lecturer I've had at Wisconsin. I was excited to wake up and attend lecture each morning even when it was cold out. He cares very much about student and gives lots of time to me
I didn't really know what this class was all about but it ended up being amazing! Dr. Friedman gives awesome lectures and all of his assignments were great! He give clear direction and feedback. We worked on every project in lecture and he was always willing to watch your code and give you help. Great class.
Fridmans 400 class was top-notch material. I didn't get the grade I wanted (due to personal reasons), I definitely learned a lot from his class. I recommend going to lecture and the self paced practice projects. He genuinely (it appears) cares about students. He is sarcastic which comes off as rude but that's excusable if you get to know him.
It was a great class. I'm a big fan of prof.fredman
This was my favorite class last semester. The professor is very funny and sweet.
Bummer is that you have to work more than most, but at the same time you will learn more and enjoy this more than most courses. The lecture material does not just rehash the readings, you have to do both. If you do, the quizzes are cake and the exam is doable. There is a big curve at the end so if you are putting in work you will get a solid grade.
I highly recommend this course and this instructor.
This is the best class I have taken in awhile and absolutely my favorite economics class. The workload is lighter than most advanced classes and the lectures are fun.
I really liked Matt. He seemed to care about his students and was willing to help even if it wasn't normal class time or an office hour. The class was ok. The coding part was hard for me at the time though I use the things I learned in the class all the time at my job now.
Really easy class. HW is like 1-3 problems and only one exam. Yhe lectures are well organized and easy to follow. Use the practice quizzes to prep for the final and youll get a B minimum
I go to another university and just needed a few more credits to graduate so I took this class over the past summer. The instructor was awesome, we met weekly (online) and he gave super fast feedback on assignments and emails. I would have liked this class better over the full semester, but it was good if you absolutely need summer credits.
Matt is a sweet and caring professor. He remembered me after I graduated and wrote recommendation letters to help me get into my master's program. Now I use the things I learned in this class in almost all of my financial engineering courses.
One of the hardest classes I had at UW. Matt deserves a 5 for all the time he spend helping me, but the class only gets a 3 at best. Seemed like anyone could pass with a decent grade if you do all the work, but it isn't easy work. Don't take this class unless you love to code.
If this scale went to 10 I would rate the class 11! Super class and professor - no sleeping in this one.
Great class. Excellent professor. Absolutely worth your time.
Dr Friedman is smart and helpful. The textbook is really hard to read, but Dr Friedman is great at answering questions. He seems to know the book inside out and backwards.
Professor Friedman is my absolute favorite instructor in the econ department! His lectures are entertaining and jam packed with information. Matthew is incredibly helpful and was always so patient with me when I went to office hours. Difficulty is average compared to other econ classes, go to discussion sections and you'll be fine.
Engaging class with an awesome professor. The material is manageable if you stay on top of it. Lecture videos and practice exams are very helpful. unstuckstudy also proved useful for study prep. Definitely recommend this class!
Such a great class, I feel like it changed my perspective on every decision I make.
Very engaging. Only class where I actually really participated in throughout my time here. It totally redefines how you think and it makes you understand just how stupid the average person really is, of which Matt is not. Extremely intelligent, available, and fun. Class can be tough, the RCA's and Problems sets are fine but you lose points easily.
Very able but he thinks you only have his course to pay attention to for the entire semester. The amount of homeworks, assignments, take-home exams - I mean what is the point? You take the course for learning micro economics and you end up spending week in week out solving python codes. Spend 50 hours a week if you want to succeed
At first I thought he was charismatic and engaging, but it became clear that his teaching style is sort of arrogant. He regularly elaborated on topics that were hardly related to the course content/textbook. For someone who lectures on biases, his were glaringly obvious. Homework felt disconnected from lecture content, especially calculations.
What a wonderful professor! He is fantastic. So kind to students and understanding. The class was very interesting and made me want learn even more about nudging. Not too hard exams or quizzes, but lots of reading and a group paper.
This is a very challenging and rewarding class. The topics are interesting and useful. There is a TON of reading. The professor is very knowledgeable and the lectures are easy to follow. The final exam is impossible given how much content there is in the course, but it was curved.
Dr. Friedman is an absolutely amazing professor. I had never done coding before this class and I was very nervous that I would not be able to keep up. It was difficult. Dr. Freidman helped me on zoom each week. His evening office hour was an absolute lifesaver. Overall I learned a lot in this class and it was worth it, but it is NOT easy
This is a great class. Easy exams that line up with the homework so you can prepare quickly. The lectures are fine. Not boring at all, but you can get by with the reading and online stuff he posts
My big sis recommended this class and it did not disappoint. We had a fun group in the class and met some new friends. Really laid back, not easy but not hard
I liked this classand the instructor.
This was a pretty easy class dfor me since my other CS classes covered almost all of the topics. It was still interesting enough and i needed the credits for my other major. The econ ppl who didnt have codingn experience seemed to have a tougher time. It is about as basic as you can get with ML algos.
This is a good class.
This is one of my best cladses i taken at the university. Thre was much more reading than otHer classes. But the test was am easy final and the other problem sets were graded easy.
It was far and away my best class this semester. Great lectures and straightforward exams. Not too many assignments, but lots of reading.
Dr. Friedman is an awesome teacher. I recommend this class.
