Here's a teacher to help boost confidence when none exists for Math! Always got C's / Bs, but his explanations got me an A in his class and aced 2 of his 3 tests. Very patient, but expects to see willingness to learn. Just enuf homework to get concepts.
Awesome teacher!!!!
good teacher, good explanations, wants you to succeed.
Mr. Funk is the best teacher that I have ever had. Students: If you can, take your math classes with Funk. Explains concepts very clearly and conscisely, teaching you everything that you need to know to be successful in math.
I enjoyed his teaching style. I would like to take more math classes with him. His teaching style is very clear and understandable.
definitely the best teacher, math or otherwise I've had at PCC, and all my teachers have been pretty good.
Extremely helpful in explaining how math works. Also very good at working review into the lecture, not just expecting you to remember everything. Probably the best math instructor I've ever had.
The rumors are true. The man is a great teacher...no wonder all of his classes fill up. Very informative and clear in his explanations. Tries his best to make math fun and present real-world applications to algebra. Show up to class, do the homework, ask questions - he's fair and intelligent.
He genuinely CARES about people. If you show interest, and a willingness to work hard, he'll do all that he can for you. He's also a fabulous, clear, concise lecture-er and his tests, I venture to say, are extremely fair. Fear of math melts away in his classes.
Best math teacher I've ever had. I wish he could teach all my math classes. He is very helpful and he makes math very tangible.
Wow. I had extreme math anxiety before taking this class, and now I'm almost bored. I actually look forward to solving equations and going to math class. Mr. Funk makes it SOOO easy that it's ridiculous.
MR. Funk Rocks-- FUN is 3/4 of FUNK-- I almost like math now, and have more confidance than I did before taking his class. I use to fear math, but He makes math understandable and approachable.
Mr. Funk isthe cooliest math teacher that I ever took before. He is helpful with everything and he makes you want to learn more from his class. He makes math fun and funny. If you want to learn something great take Mr. Funk for any of your math classes. I know that I did.
Professor Funk is the best math teacher ever! I am going to college to eventually get my teaching degree, and I feel like I should pay double for his classes. So talented! If only we could clone teachers like this!!!
VERY good teacher!! I had taken math 95 before and didnt understand it but I got an A in his class. He will keep explaining things until you understand them. I highly recommend him.
GODS GIFT TO MATH!!!! Take him. Trust me you will finally understand math.
this is the gratest teacher i have ever had, i learned it and i know it, i truly understand this stuff.
Amazing simply Amazing! Would Reccommend him to ANYBODY who wants to understand math fully and enjoy learning it at the same time. Finally one of those classes that you don't realize you are learning but at the end are surprised at how much you did.
Mr. Funk is one of THE BEST teachers I have ever had. He is clear on everything and even ties in a little humor with his teaching. His classes fill up fast, so if you're going to try and get one, do it NOW!
I fail 4 times in math 60 and took Mr. Funk and I am finally getting it!!! I think this is the best math teacher on earth!!!
Mr. Funk is the best math teacher I've had! He makes sure you understand the material by relating it to math 60 or math 20 levels. His class is the perfect pace and you will be more than prepared for your next math class. If you have the opportunity, take from this teacher!
The best teachers in mathematics I had thus far. He teaches the material, puts out Clear expecations, and most of all explains the material thoroughly. His tests are purely testing your understanding, not if you can whip out the hardest problems possible. HIGHLY recommended. Started with 111C, never left him. :D Planning to do MTH series with him.
he seems like a nice guy, but he doesnt seem 2 have patience for students who dont understand things the first time around.he comes off as irritated when you ask him questions and his test are def nothing like the hw he assigns, even if you take all notes you can and do all the assigned hw, the test questions are nothing like what he covers in class
Mr. Funk is enthusiastic about pre-calculus. He explains things thoroughly and has a good sense of humor.
Funk is the best math teacher I have ever had. It is so important to have a teacher teaching something they are passionate about. He's so patient and explains abstract, complicated concepts in a way that everyone can understand. Plus is stupid little puns make class interesting!
Without a doubt Matt Funk is the best teacher you could ever take. He goes step by step on each equation, which is so helpful. Even when I took a math class that he didn't teach and I needed help in the lab he would stop and help me. You couldn't get a better teacher that Matt Funk!
I am sorry that the person who took 112 didn't have as wonderful of experience as I have had with Mr. Funk but from someone who has struggled in math he made it as easy as it could be for someone who brain that has stopped working right!!LOL Thank you Mr. Funk for being such a wonderful teacher and person!!
The best instructor ever. fun, silly, happy, fair, understanding. great man. GO MATT!!
excellent teacher- very clear, helpful, funny, encouraging. taking him is a must!!
best teacher ever.
Matt is helpful and will help you to look at math in a different way. Tries to simplify some topics that used to scare me before and makes them real life relative. Jokes are corny but he knows that. Lots of emphasis on financial stuff, helpful but makes no bones about the fact he is a finance consultant. If you want to go higher in math take 111A.
Great lectures, very clear. Was apprehensive about 111c, but Matthew made it enjoyable and put everyone at ease! Usually only 10-20 problems per week for homework. Pay attention & take notes & you'll find his tests straightforward and fun. Matthew breaks down complicated concepts and makes them easy to understand. TAKE THIS INSTRUCTOR!!
Before his class I was barely passing and stressing out with ample anxiety...Matt Funk should get the ultimate teachers award. He has made Math make sense and a lot more comprehensible for me! I am taking him next term to complete the series...I just hope that he is teaching Math 111. Take him if you have struggled in the past!
Wow. everyone loves him except me. I felt that he breezed through the material, not really stopping if you didn't get it. Hardly any homework. Sure I got an A, but I don't remember anything I learned from that class. It's like he knows it so well he underexplains it. It just felt too superficial. His tests were easy though, gotta give him that.
The best math teacher I've EVER had. I wish I could take him again. He has a quirky sense of "math" humor and tries very hard to make sure you can understand what he is teaching. He is also fluent in spanish so if english is not your first language (assuming spanish IS) then definitely take Funk! He is the Origninal Math Gangsta!
He can really simplify things no matter how high of a level the math class you are taking with him. You will get an A in his class if you give it all youGot If you have to choose between "Kidogoochi" or Funk, choose Funk if you want an easy A, and choose the other guy if you want the challenge of your life. Both are great teachers in their own way.
took 251, 252, 253, and 254 from him. Changed my schedule just so I could continue to stay in his class. One of the best Math teachers at the college. I recommend you take every class you can from him.
He is the reason so many students have succeeded in the sciences and their chosen fields. He gave us hope and a chance for the future. WE SUCCEEDED because he genuinely cares and understands the material he teaches. He does so clearly, logically and with rigor. He does not have time to teach everything he would like too, but what he does, is potent
Ridiculously easy class but also a great teacher. If anyone is planning to take calculus, i highly recommend Matthew. Light homework, easy test, flexible grading and easy to understand teaching style.
Mathew made me not want to have massive anxiety attacks about math. I absolutely loved his style and corny jokes. homework is light and tests are "hard + easy divided by 2". if you are not a math person, but have to take upper level math classes for your degree, do yourself a favor and take mr. funk's classes!
I took Matthew Funk in 2007. He was the BEST math teacher I have ever taken this far and will ever take in the future. I highly recommend him to any and everyone. My mother took him as well and loved the experience.
Took his class for Calc 253 and 254, one of the best math teacher at PCC. If you reading this review, enroll in his class right away cause he is just that good!
I took my four Calculus courses with Matt Funk, and I have to say that he's the best teacher I've had at PCC. He's engaging, good-natured, clear, helpful, and best of all, he has a love for the subject, and it comes through. His tests are fair, and if you pay attention, you'll do fine. I couldn't recommend Matt more for your MTH 251-254 classes.
I have a hard time understanding event he easiest of math concepts, but Mathew's way of explaining functions and concepts to me was perfectly clear. There are rarely any questions asked in class because he covers it all in his explanation. The homework is short and helpful and the tests are quizzes are short too. He doesn't try to trick you either.
Matthew is a math GOD! The thing is he LOVES math, and that shows through. I believe he also loves teaching, so he's really found his calling. Too bad I didn't find him till now; I would take as many math classes as you can with this man. He is amazing!!!
Genuinely loves math, crystal clear, tests make sense. What more do you want?
I have had several different teachers for math classes and ever since the first time I was encouraged to take Mr. Funk since he was regarded very highly by a friend at PCC. I have taken him since the first course of math 65 and just finished 111B with him and am so incredibly sad that he is not teaching stats next...he is a brilliant teacher!!!!!
Took Math 95 from D. Froemke, received and F. The following term I took M. Funks Math 91 class and eared an A. Enough said!
I must concur with the reviews here. Hey, let's be honest, one of the reasons I took his class is because of reviews I'd read here. He loves math, he loves teaching, and I loved him as a teacher. I'm sad to be done with math and Matthew Funk, and wish I had found him earlier in my math endeavors!
He makes math fun! Every lesson is filled with laughs.
Matthew makes math fun and easy to enjoy. I had him for MTH 111C this term and have already registered to have him for MTH112 in Spring. I will look for him for all future classes through MTH 261 as well. If you want to learn math, look for Matthew Funk. Undoubtedly the best math instructor I have ever had.
Super easy. Hardly need to work for an A.
Fantastic teacher. Truly wants students to succeed. Highly recommend Matthew, especially if you struggle with math.
hes cool, reasonable... to the point.... doesnt want u to spend copious amounts of time doing tedious arithmetic algebra etc so u can use your calculator and save yourself a headache.... tells u exactly what to expect with the test... no surprises.... no games.... no BS.... just how i like it :-) recommend to all...
Hot...hot...hot! I really enjoyed his class. I took Funk for 95, 111c, & 1112. There is none better than Funk...he's funk-a-licious! He is very clear on his expectations, and is flexible. He understands that life happens. I recommend him to one and all!
The best math anything teacher ever. I wish I could have him for every future math class. THE BEST. Motivated, energetic, corny-funny, and makes the math fun. Again, the best. If you have Matthew, you will learn no matter who you are. Always available to students and really cares.
Lets face it, unless you are a math major this will not be your focus class and even though Funk is a math nerd to the core he understands this and will take care of you. I was scared to death of trig ad passed with an A and a high level of understanding. I am taking Calc 1-3 with him at his new post, SE campus in the fall.
Easy A. It would be hard to fail his class. Tests are one page. pretty geeky but in a good way. it was nice to have a math teacher that didnt think they were your only class and work you to the bone.
He is a great teacher; one of the best I have encountered. It was a privilege to be taught by this math guru. I have learned so much because of him.
Perhaps the best instructor I've ever had in ANY subject. I am looking forward to my 4th class with him, MTH252, this winter. VERY clear and concise and wants you to learn the material.
The course was fun and easy. It was very refressing to have an instructor actually teach the subject and do it so well that the tests really did seem easy. Thanks Matt!!
I took his 256 class last year and found him to be a very good teacher. He knows how to break a difficult, complex subject down into understandable parts. The tests are short, but fair. If you take clear notes and keep up with the material, you should do well.
If you want a teacher who'll assume you can't retain any information from previous classes and will talk down to you as if he were actually teaching 3rd grade math, this is the class for you. Easy A, but don't expect to be able to take what you learned to any other math class, you'll be way behind. His tests are a joke and he's more concerned with jumping around and making stupid jokes to convince students he's cool than he is with teaching anything.
Awesome teacher! He can teach math to anyone. It's amazing and wonderful to find a teacher like this. You will not be disapointed if you take his class. He's also a bit funny.
Matthew is a great teacher.. I have taken him for three terms and going to be taking him in the fall... He is very helpful and explains things in an easy way to understand! Thanks Matthew for all your help and encouragement and understanding!!!
If your criteria for a good teacher is someone who gives you an A without actually expecting you to learn anything, then this is the class for you. If you want to actually be capable of doing math, avoid this class. Spent the entire first day of class telling us all about how awesome he is and did not improve.
Too easy. If you're lazy and want to get an A with almost no effort then take Matt but if you need to continue taking more math especially with other professors then take my word for it and don't! You'll be a weakling and will have to work much harder later, like me.
AWESOME PROFESSOR. He's a great teacher, explains concepts very well and goes over them throughly. He's super friendly and cracks jokes. His tests are very fair. I feel like I learned more and actually enjoyed learning it with Matt, serisouly taking him for the next three calc classes.
Matt is an amazing professor. Have had him for my past 2 calc classes and I can honestly say he is one of my favorite professors I have ever had.
Great teacher overall. I took him for math 252, 253, 254, and 261. and more than likely 256. He explains math pretty well when needed.
Great teacher explained math too a T. This teacher made math become English language for me, I've had difficulties with math it's was like a foreign language. This teacher took what we did and showed strategies to make it easy. The test was based strictly off the strategies you learned in class to do the homework and test.
Funk knows his stuff and knows how to explain it clearly. He has a fair, consistent and useful homework/test system. I'd take a class with him again for sure.
Was dreading taking this class, as it's generally a VERY applied mathematics course. Mr. Funk skipped almost all of the applied and hammered in on the theory of the subject. I can solve first order and second order differential equations in a multitude of ways now, tying in linear algebra along the way. But I can't set up a problem to save my life.
I had Matthew starting at Mth95 and stayed with him through 111, 112, 251, 252, 253, 254, 261 and 256. I haven't had a better instructor in the entire 3 years I have been back in school. I graduated high school in 1977 and only had one instructor through those years that was even close to the level of insight and knowledge he possessed.
Matthew Funk made me want to be a math teacher. After taking other professors after him, I realized how much I missed him. He's patient, clean, consistent, and really available. Awesome teacher.
My major is electrical engineering, while my minor is computer science. Those involves plenty of Math. Taking Calculus series with Funk gave me relaxing time because he is not a tricky teacher. However in the long run, EE will major appreciate tricky Math teachers.
Mathew is a very involved teacher. He has a great attitude and explains things so that his students will understand the concept of what they are learning, instead of crunching a bunch of numbers and homework like some teachers. He geniunely wants his students to learn and be excited to learn about math.
AMAZING HE IS THE BEST TEACHER I HAVE HAD AT PCC SO FAR HE EXPLAINS THINGS VERY WELL ONLY GIVES ABOUT 6 MATH PROBLEMS FOR HOME WORK AND HIS TEST ARE 10 QUESTIONS LONG THE CLASS YOU HAVE THE DAY BEFORE THE TEST HE WILL DO A WALK THROUGH IF WHAT YOU SHOULD STUDY FOR IF YOU HATE MATH TAKE HIM . HE WILL MAKE YOU LIKE MATH AND YOULL PASS WITH B OR A
My favorite teacher. Ever. Really nice guy, explains things EXTREMELY well, doesn't overwhelm you with homework, and his tests are straightforward. TAKE HIM.
He talks in third person a lot and always makes corny jokes, often repeating the same ones. He gives breaks every class and goes over homework at the beginning of each class. He splits the course into 3 parts and there's a test for each part. Homework problems for each 'part' is given at the beginning of the part. Tests are pretty hard.
Excellent teacher. Explains the concepts clearly. Amount of homework is enough to learn the material without being excessive. The tests follow the material taught precisely. Maple not actually used and the textbook mostly used for homework problems. I enjoyed taking Vector Calculus with him. Never asked for help outside class so can't rate there.
He is the math department chair and enjoys teaching more than his other duties. His syllabus states that he wants only ONE person talking at a time, which made my class VERY quiet and lack participation. His concepts are clear and homework is easy, but there is no group work and he teaches in a conservative lecture format. He has a writing assign!
He is by far, the best instructor ever. I would never take a math class with anyone besides him. He spent several hours with me to help me gain confidence in his math class, as well as in my personal life. HE IS THE BEST!!!
Matthew is a great instructor, made calculus easy to digest. Passionate instructor who clearly likes to teach and encourage his students. Exams are not hard, but not easy. Always available during office hours. Don't assume because he's a good teacher, you don't have to study though. Studied hard, went to office hours a lot, got an A.
Awesome teacher! I think he is the best math teacher I have had so far. He is funny and understands his students. He made math fun and interesting. He is clear on what the tests are going to look like, but you still need to know the material. He put in some tricky questions on the exams. Nothing major though. I am taking him next term!
Matt is one of the best two math teachers I have ever had. He makes sure we understand what he is saying with a positive attitude. I would love to have him for every math class in the future. I love when math teachers actually care about teaching the students the material, instead of just reading them words out of a book full of numbers.
Mr. Funk is an awesome instructor. He teaches at a very reasonable pace. He explains almost all of his problems in multiple ways. Also, we only had 4 homework assignments due over the course of the term. He prepares you for test by explaining the exact type of problems that will be on the test. He's great I definitely recommend him.
Matthew has to be one of the best teachers I have ever had. He makes learning math bearable. People who are taking math to fill requirements for their degree may be intimidated by math. Matthew removes the stress and makes a great learning environment. His classes fill fast. Take him if you can get in!
Mathew is one of the best math teachers I've ever had! His lectures are very clear & descriptive. He explains the concepts in a handful of ways, you choose which 1 works for you. Tests are explained thoroughly & are doable if you pay attention in class. Homework is fairly simple, he always goes over questions. I've taken math w/him since MTH 60!
He does great lectures, but doesn't assign much homework to back them up. He is also extremely clear about what will be on the tests, and makes them really short. I'm not a huge fan of this because it means that, if you get one question wrong, then there goes 10 percent of your test grade. Other than that he cracks jokes and makes the class welcome
Professor Funk is an amazing teacher. Funk has wonderful ways of making math fun and easy to understand. If you do all of your homework and stay true to the lectures you will have no problem in the class. I Absolutely recommend Funk if you enjoy math. He really shows his love for math when he teaches.
One of the best math teachers that you can get at the PCC Southeast campus. Very patient, even when you are having trouble. Rips the tedium out of the coursework and whittles it down to the stuff you actually need to know. Homework is to help you understand, not rape your free time.
He is great. He starts off with simple problems then walks you through harder ones. His tests are short. Explains things very well.
Matthew Funk is a wonderful math teacher. PCC is lucky to have him and I'm lucky to have gotten to take linear algebra with him. Highly recommended!
Matthew is a decent instructor. He explains material well. He clearly communicates course expectations. His tests are representative of the material covered in lecture and homework assignments. His grading style isn't fair, he grades on a 5 point scale with no partial credit. However he is very clear about what will be on exams.
I absolutely loved taking his class! He is clearly passionate about what he teaches and explains things in such a way that is very easy to understand. He opened my eyes to the many connections between mathematics, nature, and our world as a whole. I thank the universe for teachers like Mr. Funk!
Really nice guy, but it's not the most engaging class. The content of linear algebra is terribly dull. There's no proofs or much exposition, so it's just tedious (but easy) computation. Not Matthew's fault, it's just how 261 is. Get past this class so you can enjoy Differential Equations and be able to use matrices for cool things later.
Matthew might be the answer to your prayers if you struggle with math. Let's just say the exams are easier than the assigned homework (no joke). There's always a prep beforehand so his expectations are extremely clear.
This is difficult material, but Matthew made me feel confident in my math abilities. He is very clear with what he expects from his students, and is always available to help. There are labs every day of class (great opportunities for help), homework is due in bundles on the days of exam 1/2/final. Exams are very fair, and he is the best math prof!!
This professor got me to enjoy math again. He's very clear on his grading scale, explains the material thoroughly and very passionate. He likes to pop math jokes and says to not overthink everything. As long as you show up, take notes and review the material, easy A. He assigns few problems from each section and due by test day.
He cares about his students a lot and never make his students feel uncomfortable in his class. He doesn't give any quizzes and check any homework, however you can still learn a lot about his lecture.
Pretty good professor, always on-time, no surprise tests, lot of notes, only graded by 2 assignments, midterm and final.
All my questions get answered!
1/2 Funk was nice, but inaccessible. Tutor time for 1 hour on Fridays, really? The day that most people don't even have class- Why would you come back to campus for 1 hour, especially if you live far? Every other prof does tutoring for hours on the normal class days M-Th. Not helpful. Doesn't answer questions thoroughly, not encouraging.
The expectations were clear, I just think this is a class for people who understand math fairly well already, this class will be easy for them, but it's not for people that math doesn't come easily to. He is matter of fact and stoic (but also incredibly intelligent), instead of being warm or friendly or encouraging. Not question-friendly.
Mr. Funk is amazing! Really clear explanations of all the topics and types of problems you will encounter on the examines. The only thing I would make a warning of is, his tests have a very small amount of questions, which is nice.. but this means each problem carries a lot of weight. So just a few errors will drop your test grade fast. Good luck!
Matthew Funk 's teaching style is difficult to process, in a 2 hr & 50 min class Funk will only lecture, almost never letting student practice solving problems in class, doesn't promote class participation (questions, answers), he actually has belittled students for asking questions, he also never uses D2l and still hasn't given me my final grade.
Matthew was a a great teacher. He took a lot of time to explain the subjects and was always there for his students. Homework was due at the time of each test and was taken from a free textbook. He always outlined the tests in detail so you knew what to study for. There was one big project but he gave us months to do it. Overall very understanding .
It is somewhat difficult to rate math professors because in something like calculus it's either you know your stuff as a student or you don't. Matt is very clear in his lectures and about what students should expect of themselves in the class. As long as you can get past some of the math puns he makes ;) he is a very good teacher.
(online course) Prof. Funk's class was steady-paced, and easy to follow. He allows questions at any time, and we would have end-of-class breakout rooms to work together on the lab due next class (he would pop in and help too). We only had two tests, and two homework sets due at time of tests. I learned a lot from this class with very little stress!
Took Matthew for Calc 4 and Linear Algebra during COVID. The homeworks are submitted in blocks alongside the miderm and final, respectively. Matthew spends the first bit of class time answering any questions before jumping into lecture. The exams are very fair: if you study, you'll do well. I loved Matthew's class and the way it was structured!
Long, boring lectures with no group work or activities. Not good at genuine communication. I dont think he checks the 2 homework assignments, and the 2 exams are ridiculously easy. I got an easy A without feeling like I really learned anything. He doesnt really go over how to actually USE the material at all, which made the class feel useless.
Matthew really is a fantastic instructor and probably the best I've ever had for a math course. Despite the course being remote, he adapted well, made an effort to engage the class, and was enthusiastic while teaching. There was PLENTY of time to complete all assignments and even exams. I left with a newfound appreciation for the subject.
When I initially signed up for calculus I had no belief in my math skills. However, my confidence grew exponentially due to Matthew's adept and proficient teaching abilities. Everything was taught in such a way that it was all interwoven and sensible to understand. I 100% believe Matthew could teach calculus for even a hamster to understand.
I don't know if it was just me, but I had difficulty connecting with this teacher. Math doesn't come easy for me, and I wasn't a huge fan of his teaching style. He is really nice and knowledgeable, but It was hard because you are only graded on a few things, so if you don't do well on one of two tests, good luck keeping an A.
At first, Matthew did not stand out to me. He seemed withdrawn. However, as the term progressed, I started to notice that Mr. Funk is a really sweet guy. As long as you communicate with him, you will see that he is really in your corner. The more effort you put in to the class, the more he will connect with you, and the more you will learn.
The BEST math professor I have ever had by far. Absolutely amazing. Matthew knows his stuff when it comes to math. I actually enjoy math and was able to chat with Matthew outside of class and he genuinely loves math and is incredibly knowledgable, and he is a great guy. 10/10 for sure.
Hes not a dynamic guy which makes some people feel like they cant connect to him, but hes a great teacher if you can stay flexible. He will answer any question for you and knows how to use simplistic language to make sure you can follow along. He sandwiches the easier things in between the hard things; he doesnt save the hard stuff for last.
Professor Funk is well versed in Calculus but unfortunately, his 2.5 hours of straight lectures (w/ no breaks) combined with a heavily implicit and abstract lecturing style makes his Math253 class incredibly difficult for most students like me to digest and be proficient in Calculus 3. I suggest students look elsewhere. I took this class remotely.
There are 4 things in the grade book. He is not well versed in technology so he doesn't use it at all. You will not see your grades in the grade book until he posts the final grade in myPCC. He was an OK professor not bad but I personally did not like this aspect.
The midterm and final exam practically determine your grade. If you don't do well in those, it'll be difficult to help your grade. He will lecture in class, but he isn't tech savvy whatsoever, so you'll never see anything posted online besides the single writing assignment and syllabus. Isn't the worse, not the best.
He's okay. Far from the best professor I've had, but not the worst. His teaching style is extremely lecture-heavy, and he gives us no time to work with our peers, which I find is when I learn the most in these types of classes. If you want to buckle down and take notes for 2 1/2 hours, by all means, but it wasn't for me.
Matthew Funk was a fantastic teacher and I can honestly say that his vector calculus class was one of the best math classes one ever taken. The way the class was structured is exactly how I feel all math classes should be structured, with only a few larger assignments to be completed within very reasonable time periods.
Cannot recommend enough! His lectures and example problems are very clear and engaging. He really loves the subject and teaching, he knows what he's doing. Attendance isn't mandatory but he does not upload lectures or information to D2L so it can be hard to learn what you miss. Final & Midterm: 30% each, HW: 15%, Lab: 25%. Easy tests and grader!
Took Calc 2 from him, loved it, and went back for Calc 3. He seems a little flat or gruff at first, but when you really get into it it's clear he loves what he does. I still think about his "+C" baseball cap (a Calc 2 joke) and the day he proved that e^(pi*i) +1 = 0 (CRAZY Calc 3 fact). Plus if you're looking into a math major he's a great guide.
There's lots of call and response on simple things to make sure you're paying attention, pay attention and nod during lectures. My advice? Call out that 2+4=6 the sooner that someone does, the sooner the awkward silence is over and then you can move on. Matthew really likes Math, very animated in class.
Grade determined by tests. Zero feedback on homework throughout term. Lecture heavy & doesn't like questions. Seems like a fun kinda guy during lecture but if u try to talk to him after class he's very cold & uninterested. Prioritizes giving attention to students who are excelling rather than those who need more help. Self obsessed math incel vibe
Hands Down, Best Math Instructor Ever!! Super inspirational, not homework heavy, hilarious and really wants his students to succeed. He even gives you a pre exam before the real exam to help you prep. He gives you all the tools to succeed. He breaks it down and really gives you the courage to push through. TAKE HIS CLASS! He got the funk yall.
Matthew Funk is the gold standard of math at PCC. His lectures are in-depth and he calls on the class to keep everyone engaged. He answers all questions and it quick to respond outside of class. An important part of his classes is his "writing assignment" the goal is to explain the topic to someone else, as a math tutor this assignment is perfect.
Professor Funk's class is challenging but rewarding. His teaching style can be abstract, but he's knowledgeable. Engage with the material and use resources like unstuck study to succeed.
Matthew is great, I've had some awful math professors before who didn't make any attempt to make the course content digestible. Matthew on the other hand, presents all of the concepts in a very easy to follow, step by step way. Additionally, you won't stress for his exams as he's very clear about what to expect and gives good practice questions.
Professor Funk was a pleasure to have as a teacher for Linear Algebra. While attendance is not mandatory, I would say it is absolutely necessary. He manages to shape the concepts into bits and examples that are so much easier to understand than the way the pedagogy itself does. Funny, engaged, and passionate about his field. 100% recommend.
Boy oh boy where do I even begin. Mr. Funk… my linear king. The way he enters at 9 am. with that gleaming balding head and writes a bracket so smooth I nearly faint. I'd sit through cofactor expansion a thousand times just to witness him pivot once more. He doesn't teach linear algebra. He is linear algebra...
professor funk is a great professor at teaching stuff. He is very passionate about math so it was easy to follow along. The reason he doesn't get a 5 is because of little feed back and only 5 things get graded for the whole term which could be very dangerous for some students who procrastinate. Attendance not required but you will need the notes
Someone already said it but he seems awesome when he is giving lecture and gives praise to excelling students. But if there is a question he doesn't like or you talk to him outside of class he is a little cold and patronizing.
I loved Professor Funk's class. I struggled in 251 w/ another prof, so I expected 252 to be hard, but it was surprisingly easy. Lectures are clear and make sense. He shows harder examples in class to ‘over-prepare' you for exams, which aren't too difficult. Only complaint is notes aren't posted so attending class helps but attendance isn't graded.
Good math teacher. He definitely knows what he is doing. Passionate about math.
