Nice guy. Gives you all the test questions in advance but has constant pop quizzes to make you read the book and two writing assignments from the book. You can get an A or B if you do the work, but if not, he will fail you.
Good teacher, tough class. 30-50 pages of reading/class date. If you don't read, you will struggle.
This is a great teacher who knows the material and teaches it very well, i learned a lot in this class. the only thing that bothered me about him was at one point I was stuggleing and it was a month away from finals, he put me down and encouaged me to quit. I actually had a b average in this class the entire time
Garrett is legit and knows his stuff. However, I know US History well so it's boring for me and I'd rather not be there. I won't take from him again unless its necessary because he does pop quizzes on reading and 2 research papers instead of 1. You can't miss more than a few classes or he drops you. He's a cool guy to talk to though.
Professor Garrett is a great professor. There is a lot of reading and 2 research papers to do. If you just do what you are told, an A is completely possible. Be sure to keep up on the reading to be prepared for the pop quizzes. Anytime you need help he will work with you to make himself available.
Hes hard and has 2 researh papers which you will need both textbooks
his a cool guy love how he teaches but do need to read because he will do pop quiz every reading assignment and do research paper.
Hes a really fun professor but he waste a lot of time talking about irrelevant topics.
I took his class a two semesters ago and i must say i enjoyed his class. It's a hard class but if u do the reading and show up you'll do good! He really enjoys teaching and knows his stuff. i just didn't like his essay's he grades pretty tough and he gives lots of quizes. But overall he teaches really good.
Professor Garrett is great. I don't have a big interest in history but I had a lot of fun learning the material. He gives quizzes on an iClicker almost ever class session so you MUST read the text book. Two papers, a midterm and final. Two ten point extra credit opportunities. He's funny and takes in interest. 9/10 would be lectured again.
Read the book, show up to class, 2 chances for extra credit, 2 papers, 2 tests. Iclicker quizzes almost every class. he has an intersting point of view.
Easy. Do your reading, and you'll pass. Ask questions, he'll answer. Don't be late, he'll lock the door and will not open it. Performs quizzes start of every class. One major paper on one of two books. Middle school students have the discipline to pass this class. He's not out to end your life, he simply expects you to be adults and do what's asked
Really enjoyed his class. Not a hard class. Just read and you will do good on the quizzes. He is a wonderful teacher and funny. Probably the only history class I actually liked going to. And I hate history.
I took his class Fall 2013. Extremely helpful! Show up, listen, read, study, and you'll pass. One paper, a mid-term, and a final. Verbal quizzes start of class. He does lock you out if you're repeatedly late. Awesome professor. Ask questions and he'll no doubt answer. One of my favorite professors by far.
He's a great teacher, explains lectures very well. Also for HIST B17B, which is an intro class, he gave us review terms that the test was taken straight from. Don't know if higher level classes with him are that easy, but if you pay attention in class and skim the reading, you'll pass no problem.
3 exams, 1 ten page research paper on a topic of your choice that is broken up into several mini-assignments. Loved his study guides, very organized lectures. Book is not necessary. Speaks very highly of himself and often, but in a quirky way. Have a sense of humor and it will grow on you. Your grade will reflect your effort in this class.
His lectures tend to be long and there are quizzes every day. He doesn't take the time to learn about the students and doesn't really care if you pass or not. He is sometimes rude during his office hours or makes remarks in class that aren't nice. This class was a lot harder than it needed to be, I'd recommend another teacher if possible.
Amazing professor! He is very enthusiastic and class was entertaining. Lecture notes are a must BUT he gives you every test topic ahead of time and extra credit for answering the questions on flash cards for studying. You MUST attend class for reading quizzes. BUT if you are a good student he is more than willing to work with you.
Two five paged papers and two tests plus daily attendance quizzes. Tons of reading, if you don't want to fail. He was great, really knew his stuff, his lectures were interesting and usually funny. Made the class sing a song for extra credit. Don't leave class early, and always bring your iclicker and read. if you do that you should be fine
He was my very first teacher at BC, and I absolutely loved his class. You MUST read the chapters in order to pass the quizzes. However, as long as you go to class, do the homework, and pay attention you'll pass. He loves history and you can tell. If I could I would take all his classes. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Professor Garrett. He's so much fun!!
Class discussions were fun, but lectures were very boring. Also too much reading, class was based on quzzes
I took this class with a friend thinking maybe we could help each other out. Boy was I wrong. If you didn't read the chapter for the reading quiz, you won't pass. There is only 2 tests, midterm and final. If you don't turn in your paper, you will fail the class. It was really hard to grasp the information he was teaching. But he was funny though.
I took this class the FALL 2014. It was very informational class. YOU WILL NOT PASS if you don't have a clicker. It A MUST. Always attend class to take quizzes & don't EVER leave early; he gives pop quizzes. There are two papers & two exams. Study the study guide he hands out and previous tests he puts on his class website & you should be fine.
He is by far the best Professor I have ever had! As long as you read and turn your work in on time you will pass the class. He has two exams and two papers. He gives out extra credit and it really helps. I would recommend him to anyone, as long as you don't mind the twisted humor!
To pass this class you must read the assigned reading because there is a quiz for that reading next class period as soon as you walk into class. No ICLICKER? Not going to pass. He gives you extra credit on flashcards before the two tests. During the lecture write notes on the study guide not on the lecture. It will hep with the Flashcards.
Professor Garrett is my favorite professor out of all the ones I have had at BC. I would totally recommend his classes.
I very much enjoyed this class, I highly recommend it. Garret is there for all his students, if you follow directions you will most definitely pass.
Gives you the questions that will be asked on both tests (only 2 in the semester) in advance. Show up to class and do the reading and you will pass easily.
Took him for 17A. First off, he is very firm and doesn't make class fun. I dreaded going to his class everyday. He makes crude jokes and at times aims them at students. His grading is ridiculously tough. He does not try and help his students. Others have asked questions and he chuckles at their questions. Literally wants you to fail.
Dr. Garrett is unique. Strange guy but still a cool teacher. You will have homework but as long as you do it and use your best effort, you can pass easily. Exams are the most important so be sure to study for them. Write down study guide questions because he answers them during lectures. Best technique for passing.
Most professors give you the first 2 weeks to get your books etc for class before you get penalized but with Profesor Garrett if you don't have your iClicker RIGHT AWAY at the start of the semester you are already failing and can't make up those lost points since he gives quizzes via IClicker. Deal breaker for me. Not everyone has $$ the first week
Pay attention. Read the book. Take notes. iClicker --- VERY IMPORTANT! Gotta have it the first day, if not, for sure the second class meeting. He's a pretty cool guy. If you need help, just ask him.
Prof. Garrett's class is easy, but you must read. He gives extra credit.
This class is not for students who don't want to be students. If you don't have a sense of humor, not for you. If you like people to feel sorry for you, this class isn't for you. I loved this class. He is funny and makes lectures fly by. You will have to work for your grade but very rewarding class. Recommended for people who will be successful.
Holding a PhD., Garrett knows his stuff. This is a tough class to pass if you don't read, show up, or take notes. He used a free pdf textbook. Attendance and quizzes every class are done on iClicker. Read and write the assigned papers and you'll pass. I think he tries to scare off those who aren't serious at first, but lectures are lighthearted.
He's a great teacher, and is pretty good with lectures and notes. He can be pretty lenient when it comes to grading, and he is always willing to give help if asked. His tests are fairly difficult. Also, he was hilarious. The first few days were kind of calm and normal, but as we all got used to each other, the class become so much fun.
This is one of my favorite teachers, including all of high school, in history. Makes class really interesting. Makes jokes and class goes by really quick. Will take History B17B with him! Only 2 essays Midterm Final and 5 question Quiz everyday. If you do your work and listen you will pass. Would recommend!
Amazing teacher, made my first semester of college fun. Only 2 essays but they are very easy. Lots of reading so get ready for that! He offers extra credit two different times. If you stay on top of your stuff you'll easily pass with an A/B and the class will be a breeze. He is really personable and funny.
This class is relatively hard. There are quizzes every class period, and you need to do the reading to do well on them. He includes a list of key terms in the syllabus from which creates the test, which is very helpful. The best part is: you don't have to memorize any dates! Dr. Garrett keeps class interesting and entertaining.
He is a great professor! He made all the subjects and lectures fun and memorable. He's really funny which helps the class time pass ! There's also not too much homework and as long as you do your work and put in some effort your sure to pass.
He is super funny! He makes a lot of jokes, but he is serious about the class. You have to do the reading. Daily reading quizzes are important for your grade! Tough grader, but that is to make you better!
He's a great professor. You do need to try to realay keep up on the reading and his lectures, but it's not too hard. He's very very animated and energetic and loud when he lectures which makes it fun and more interesting. He always makes funny jokes but you have to pay attention to get them. He's been one of my favorite at BC these last 2 1/2 years
Professor Garrett will assign some sort of research paper for this class. He breaks the paper up which makes it easier to get a good grade. His lectures are thought provoking, and the more involved in the discussion you are, the better your grade will be. If you pay attention, do the homework, and follow the study guide for the tests you will pass.
Every class counts for points exactly 5. That really matters always take the quizzes. He gives a clear outline for the class. If you're bad at history or super lazy don't take him. His lectures aren't politically correct but if you don't find a little blackface or other sensitive subjects, why not? He's one of the better professor.
He is a good professor. Make sure you address him as Dr Garret he won't acknowledge you otherwise. He is big on student interaction. He laughs at his own jokes most of the time. If you do the assignments, you will pass.
This is the first History class in which I have retained all of the info given. Dr. Garrett gives good lectures and is straight forward. He tends to be easily distracted and go off on inappropriate subjects more than I care for. The class reminded me a lot of high school, unfortunately. If you have your iClicker and read everyday, you'll be fine!
Awesome Professor! He really causes students to think for themselves, and to be opinionated.
He is an okay professor his test are kind of hard. Make sure to read because he gives quizzes before class and you don't want points to slip through your hands especially if you finna need them at the end.
Read the material every single time because there is always a quiz the next class on that material and it will really make or break you. Study for the tests, they aren't hard if you study. Really listen and follow his instructions about papers. Conservative guy who likes to start debates/conversations that are pretty off topic, but interesting.
if you don't do exactly what he wants, you won't pass. cancelled class numerous times yet expects students to show up everyday. chooses favorites. hard class, get on his good side and study hard.
The most unprofessional employee I have met on any school campus. He relies heavily on his tenure and passive threats to students to make his classroom the environment he wishes it to be without consequence. I found his personality difficult to preserver the last few weeks as he continued to care less about staying on topic. He does grade fairly.
A very unpleasant experience dealing with this professor. Is very quick to criticize and jump off the handle without offering real help or guidance. Garrett was also absent several times. How can a student get a fair amount of classroom time if Garrett does not show up and cancels class several times? Unfair grader as well. Not recommended.
Garrett is pretty great, he clearly states course expectations and gives everybody ample time to prepare for research papers and exams, There are daily quizzes based on reading (like half a chapter) that are super easy points. The whole "he gets off topic: is BS, what he talks about is relevant to the course. Critical thinking and context matters.
I took Dr. Garrett's class last semester and it was quite entertaining. He does know his material & he probably means well, but I didn't agree with the first test we took dictating whether or not we'll pass the class. That's doing too much, and hopefully he decides to change that for future students!
I thought he was going to be a better professor, he explains too fast to the point that you do not understand what he's talking about. he does not really gives notes, it is up to you to catch what he is saying if not you're screwed. he does assign a lot of reading and expects you to know everything.
I wrote a review on this "teacher" a few months ago and it has since been taken down. Unfair for potential students to see what this person is like. How is this allowed? If he is a good and fair teacher, why is this allowed? He is harsh, unprofessional and I was not able to learn in his class. No understanding, no patience and no guidance.
knows his material very well. But explains to fast and doesn't really teach. Just talks away and gets carried off in lectures. Also is passive aggressive he will motivate you saying you will do great and believes in you. Then puts you down saying your paper may suck or your gonna fail my class.
If you don't read you would not understand nothing of his lectures in every class. in other words If you don't read you won't pass the class . He is a great teacher, he explains everything. This is a class where you are going to learn a lot. every day there is a quiz be always prepare.
Explains what is expected of you ahead of time. If you miss a lecture good luck. Don't miss quizzes since you'll need those points in the end. Lectures are interesting but talks too fast to catch up. Read ahead of time so you know material being covered that day.
GREAT!!! Professor!!! gives online quizzes very easy just 5 questions you have to read the chapters and take down all the notes he gives in his lectures they will help with your midterm test!! gives extra credit on reading book 20points you do 3 essays threw out the semester... don't attend class you wont pass
He was sort of nice, but felt he was very pessimistic towards his students. LOTS of reading and make sure you study for the tests, theres only 3 and theyre worth a good amount of your grade. All of the class work was online. His lectures mainly felt like a review of the chapter you just read.
Talks way too fast during lectures to even write down a sentence of what he's talking about to take notes. Exams and quizzes are online and they're timed. 5 minutes for 5 questions on quizzes as if that were enough time to check notes. Would not recommend him to anyone. worst prof i've taken :)
Don't be put off by his "bed-side manner". (He smashed on my major the first day!) When taken with a grain of salt, Garrett gives amazing lectures. If you are looking for an easy A this is not the guy, but if you want to learn and think, I highly recommend this professor.
Dr. Garrett makes the class interesting and is not afraid to use unpopular terms, like sexist, racist and so on. Gets your attention but pointing out all the unfair practices in the United States. His enthusiasm for this subject makes it way more fun than I thought it would be.
His lectures are always entertaining, but they do not help at all. Even reading for information is a gamble. He covers materials that you were just quizzed on the previous night. He gives two extra credit opportunities for a 4% final grade boost. You need it, he requires a 73% minimum to pass.
A man who knows his material and explains you will work for your exams and research papers, and that half of the class will fall off. Extra credit opportunities are available. His most compelling aspect is his willingness to be blunt, "politically incorrect" and ask the hard questions that make you think. This man is a teacher.
Dr. Garrett is THE BEST! I loved this class so much. He's super knowledgeable about his subject and makes class really enjoyable. A lot of other students say this is a really hard class, but if you do all your assignments and read your book you'll do fine.
Professor Garrett is absolutely amazing! You will have a ton of work, but you learn so much it is more than worth it. His lectures are fantastic, I actually learned more from the lectures than the book. Do not discount the book, as quizzes are based on the book. He also notices more than you think he does and is more caring than he lets on.
Quizzes and exams aren't difficult. Lectures online are mandatory and boring. Is extremely tough grading papers. I got a 30% on a paper because he didn't like my sources, even though I was following the examples he cited in his syllabus. He confuses secondary and primary sources, no feedback, puzzling assignments, makes learning difficult.
Professor Garrett really doesn't care if you pass or not but gives you all the tools to get an A. There are weekly online quizzes that are due and the chapter exams are also online. Going to the S.I. sessions and forming a study group is what got me through the course and an A. Professor Garrett is fair with grading, however.
Dr. Garrett is an excellent professor. He takes a boring subject and makes it interesting; he is very interactive and engaging; he challenges you to think. Relates the past with the present. Loved his lectures. You will have to put in the work to pass. Lots of reading! Quizzes/exams based on lectures/textbook. A truly college level class.
Dr. Garrett gives great lectures, he interacts with the class, he is very funny and does keep your attention. His chapter quizzes are difficult and timed. He is tough at grading but he is fair. I loved his class but it was the most challenging .
Mr. Garrett, was a good proffesor in the manner, that he tried helping us with our paper assignments. He was a harsh grader on papers and expected the most. He took the time to give us lots of feedback on papers. We had lots of reading and timed quizes, not to mention timed exams! In my oppinion not enough time. Truly my most stressing class yet.
You have to come to class and pay attention to do good in the class. Garrett is funny and a great teacher and I would take one of his classes again.
The only complaint I have about this professor was that some of his comments in class were a bit rude such as you guys are at this college because your either dumb or poor but other than that very interesting class and engages students in his lectures. Work hard on the paper, he grades them tough. Also, going to class helps on quizzes/tests ALOT.
I would not take his class if you are a student of color. He has stated several racists comments on the undocumented community. He used the N word in class and tried to convert Native American students to Mormonism.
Garret was a decent proffesor, said some questionable things in class but this class consisted of reading the textbook and taking the online quizzes. The lecture wasn't even needed he just repeated everything you read in the book and you HAD to do the online quiz before the lecture so the lecture was basically worthless.
Put his entire 16 week class into one 6 week summer semester. Including a paper due every week in which he is a very hard grader on. He wants sources on his topics but some of his topics are basically useless in finding sources so he's setting you up to fail. Also rude when grading papers if you don't live up to his impossible standards.
This one's ridiculous. Read 40+ pages from book, 5 minute quiz on it that could be content from any point in the chapter. Twice a week. Assigned a 10 page paper in the first week of class that you have no information on until late in the semester. Scramble for information on a topic you've never heard of, get harshly graded and unhelpful feedback.
Garret is a very hard teacher. Hes rude and disrespectful; he makes it seem like he doesnt want anyone to pass his class. He will definitely tell you that you suck and that youre too broke to go to a 4 year University. He gives a 10 page paper the first day of class. 10 question exams with a study guide that will take hours to go over.
Matthew's impossibly high standards seem to only be held for others, not himself. He verbally harasses students, retaliates against any criticism, and pretends to be an advocate for "free speech" when he's really just an apologist. Don't tell him you think that, though, or he might try to get all your private information and blackball you. Avoid.
If your major is in History take this professor if not look for another professor. This class was so hard. He is so strict on assignments and is very picky. Your grade is pretty much based off of a 5 page research essay and the 5min quizzes that are given for each Chapter. Has high standard, straight up, and rude. Most stressing class ever!
His lectures were always interesting and lively, and he gave information outside of the textbook, so you weren't just hearing the same thing twice. He gave good feedback on papers, and offered several extra credit opportunities. He was by far my favorite professor this semester!
This class was a lot harder than it needed to be, I'd recommend another teacher if possible.
Test directly from lecture video but has reading quizzes from book. Not too bad if just read and watch lecture videos.
He is all bark and no bite. Big teddy bear if you just talk to him. He makes sarcastic jokes so if thats not your flavor move on. Lots of extra credit. Constant reading quizzes but if you just do the work it is t bad. He really tries to get you to learn something.
I thoroughly enjoyed his humor and laughed during every lecture, however, his humor is dry, so not everyone will pick up on that. He encourages critical thought, so expect to make your brain work, expect to have to think and form your own opinion-which is kind of the point. He did reply to my emails timely with helpful info. He is a bit strict.
His online class may be different but it wasn't that hard if you just do the work and he gives very detailed feedback so you know what he wants and can get the grade you want to work for. He even gave out his cell number so you can text him anytime and he replies right away.
Lots of reading quizzes but if you just do the work its pretty easy.
Professor Garrett might seem Intimidating at first but he is genuinely a nice professor. If you ask for his guidance he will for sure give you feedback especially when it comes to your final papers. Attendance is mandatory, he has amazing lectures. His exams aren't hard just make sure you read the chapters assigned for the quizzes. Overall great!!
I liked his video lectures; they helped me understand. There is a major writing paper, but the rest is just mini quizzes. He grades fairly and gives you feedback. Good class for those who like history or those who are not lazy. I was a bit lazy and still got a good grade though.
Weekly discussion posts and a couple little papers. Easy.
Garrett creates a lot of small assignments snd gives harsh feedback but grades pretty easy. Exams are hard but smoke extra credit so it all balances out.
Garrett is up front and very clear about all the assignments snd workload. You can easily see what you need to do and what he wants. He answers emails and text messages and does zoom meetings if you need extra help. Pretty chill.
He has regular reading quizzes so you must read the textbooks. One is free and the other is really cheap. He grades written work fast and gives detailed feedback but often gives full credit if you just try.
He's very clear on how he wants things done, I took his class online and he assigned a lot of reading homework which was followed by a 5 multiple choice quiz in 5 mins everyday. Expect homework !!! His exams were based on the reading, but they are timed, which can cause you to feel pressured bc he wants evidence. As well as a research paper
He has everything spelled out on day 1 and you can pretty much move as fast as you want online. Reading quizzes are auto-graded immediately. Discussion posts are mostly graded credit/no credit so as long as you make a reasonable effort you get all those points. He gives pretty harsh feedback on writing but grades them pretty easy so thats nice.
Fair and predictable. Clearly stated expectations.
Dr. Garrett inspired me to add a History AA to my education, in addition to my Biology AS. He has been a pleasure to get to know and his class is very well structured. Take notes on the video lectures to use during exams, critical thinking guide is great. Extra credit for anyone like me that needs an A. You will like History of American Indians.
Made you buy his own book that has nothing to do with what you're learning, meanwhile the actual book for your class is free. Just take a second to think about that. Gave you 5 minutes for 5 questions for the quizzes. Then he gave you 16 minutes for the "mini-essay" midterm which was 5 questions as well... There is no homework
reading quizzes and exams based on recorded lecture. He gives you a study guide for each lecture at the beginning of the lecture and if you just take notes on that you can ace the exams. Lots of directions for research paper and a checklist of things to do to get a good grade on that paper. Very clear. Easy to see what is expected.
The worst teacher I have had in a long time. Very strict deadlines and extremely rude comments on assignments that I have turned in, saying he gave me a few points out of "pity". I ended up doing almost all the extra credit to save my grade and still did bad in the class due to his very harsh grading. Be prepared for his snide remarks.
Honestly the students rating Professor Garrett with a low score are just sensitive and lacked the work ethic to actually try in the class tbh. Prof. Garrett was a good overall. If you struggle with a subject like history, do all of his extra credit assignments! That will help give you a significant grade boost. Don't slack = Easy Class
Professor Garrett has you purchase his textbook. To quote him, he wants you to "Not just know this text but prove to me you have a mastery of it." Professor Garrett writes as one would expect a Ph.D. Professor to write. 2 pages to make a point that can be summed up in about 3 or 4 sentences. It's tough reading and a tough class.
Professor Garrett's Native American History course was interesting and well put together. He clearly explains expectations and is available for assistance. Stay on top of reading and be prepared to backup all essays with evidence.
