a very clear teacher who made Chemistry(previously incomprehensible) easy for me
His accents the best! But really, he's very good, wish I could take Chem II with him.
He is very good at keeping class interesting and explains the concepts well.
He is thorough with his teachings. After talking to others about their experience in lecture for this course, I would definitely re-take him if I could. He loves answering questions, so speak up at any moment. He can go fast at times, but will go back and reexplain no problem.
Gerner is an absolutely horrible professor. He trys hard and knows his stuff ill give him that, but he cannot teach it to his students. He spends half of his class saying uhhm and yeah. I am afraid im going to fail because of him. Hes a real nice guy but i would try to get into brewers class. she is an amazing professor and makes everything easy.
He has a really awesome accent and he explains the material really well. He offers practice in class and you can tell he knows his material and is passionate. I honestly think he's one of the better professors at the U of A! Obviously an organic class isn't going to be easy but he makes it interesting and keeps you involved!
Matt is very good at explaining the information and making sure its understood. Hes also very helpful if you meet with him outside of class. Attendance is not mandatory but he does in class projects which we earn points for and the points add up to an extra grade which is very helpful but you must attend to get the points. Hard class, great teacher
I've never taken a chemistry class ever, so I was pretty nervous when I found out I had to take it. However, Gerner has made this a really good experience. He's extremely intelligent & truly knows what he's talking about. If you do the problems in the back of the book, you'll make an A on his tests - which are also INCREDIBLY curved by the way.
Matt was a very nice man. However, I found that his class and way of teaching was very confusing for me personally. I had to study A LOT outside of class, but ended up getting a high B thankfully. Try to take another teacher or at least take it with a friend. Good luck!
U Chem 2 was very challenging. Matt was helpful in office hours, though. He was also accommodating if you had a conflict during his office hours but still needed help. He is a kind man and is willing to go out of his way, but the design of the class is difficult. Clicker questions for attendance in class. Online homework also helps boost grade.
I took Dr. Gerner for the drill part of Honors Chem II. The class is just reaction papers and a presentation. As long as you do the format correctly and have a good presentation, your grade will be high. The class is very helpful concerning honors thesis work and preparation. The grade in the drill is transferred to the total Chem II grade.
Keeps the class interesting and gives many clicker questions points. if you don't understand something that he covers in class, you can go to his office hours and he'll help you a lot. Great professor
The class itself is hard and requires work. However, you don't have to get good test grades to get a good grade. There is enough points for hw, class participation, and SI to get a high grade (IF you do all of them). He goes through the material quickly and you don't really get a ton out of lecture, but go for the clicker points. He is super nice.
Dr. Gerner is awesome! I wish he taught all my classes, love him so much. He loves answering questions, he is funny and extremely helpful come test time.
Attendance is usually mandatory, but he is the best teacher I have had at the University. He is very funny, and he always makes sure you don't feel stupid. He will help you whenever you need help, and he is great at explaining the subject. I wish I could take him for every Chemistry class I have to take!
If you consistently show up and pay attention, it isn't so bad. Gerner really enjoys the subject and enjoys teaching it even more. Incredibly helpful on an already challenging topic.
Mr. Gerner is an awesome teacher. I had him for university Chem II during the summer. Chemistry itself is hard but he'd explain everything so well it'd make it somehow easy. He's funny and really nice. There was 3-4 hours worth of online homework with a lot of extra credit. Test were kind of hard, he didn't curve any.
A really good and nice teacher, plenty of extra credit opportunities. If you actually show up and participate it becomes hard to not make an A. There are people who consistently made 50's on the tests and ended up with B's.
Professor Gerner is amazing! I took AP Chemistry in high school so most of this is a review for me. Still, he is great and is willing to do anything to help you. There are a lot of ways to pick up easy points (ex: clicker questions, SI, homework, etc.).
Amazing energy. One of my favorite teachers. He is the happiest person I know, and his class was always a positive part of my day.
Best teacher at the U of A! This course is designed for you to pass. Do all the homework assignments, go to all SI, and click in on every clicker question and you'll do fine. Very enthusiastic teacher! Wants to help! Made chemistry fun & entertaining! Never opened the textbook and received an A. Understand concepts on study guide for an A on test.
Professor Gerner is an excellent professor. He is captivating and funny in his lectures, answers emails within an hour or two within asking during the day. However, because the class is so big, it is easy to get lost in the crowd, but if you take the initiative with questions, he is extremely helpful and it makes the class less intimidating.
Awesome teacher! Helpful and lecture are great! Final was tough...
If you never had AP Chem in high-school, you will likely struggle. Tests very, *very* challenging for me, but I never studied to the extent I should have. Gerner moved a little fast for me, but he has a genuine passion for the subject that I appreciated. Great guy. Very hard to fail this class due to S.I./homework/clicker points.
Excellent professor. Obviously cares deeply about his students and even hosts dinners several evenings during the semester for students. Knows the material backwards and forwards and can break it down. Responds quickly to email. Tests are challenging but the questions are based on the homework. Take advantage of office hours - he's accessible.
Tests and clicker questions are easy if you take the time to read the material before hand, or sit next smart people. He tests mastery so his test can be tricky sometimes. Overall pretty good.
Mr. Gerner's class is pretty easy. He posts powerpoint outlines on Blackboard that you can fill in during the lecture. His clicker questions are not too bad. The exams are tough. What helped me the most was doing all of the practice problems at the end of the chapters, even if I knew all of the information.
I LOVED having Dr. Gerner for Chem 1. He has such a passion for his job and truly wants to help students succeed. He would use real life examples during lectures, and gave plenty of practice material before tests.
He's a cool dude. Very enthusiastic and seems to really enjoy what he's doing. There's just a ton of homework. Averages about 8 assignments a week.
Material is pretty hard but he's a very charismatic teacher who keeps lectures somewhat interesting and really cares about your understanding of the material.
Dr. Gerner is hands down the best professor I've ever had. Extremely caring about students, and he offers so many easy ways to get points for the class, it is nearly impossible to fail. He works tons of examples in class and is a fantastic teacher. Highly recommended.
Gerner was by far my favorite professor this semester. He is VERY charismatic and makes class enjoyable. Very eager to answer questions and help students. The tests and material are challenging, but Gerner makes the class very doable. Attendance is important to get clicker points!
Love this guy. He made a tough class fun. Get ready to work, but know that he will be there to help if you need it.
Dr. Gerner overall is a great professor. You can tell he LOVES chemistry and wants other people to love it as well. There are bonus opportunities and the tests can be a little tricky, but Gerner does a good job of preparing you for those. If you have taken AP Chem... this class is a joke. The only critic I have is SOMETIMES he is a lil confusing.
I would take Gerner for every science for the rest of college if I could. I had him for both semesters this year, and he was easily my best professor both times. The material is hard but he is a really good teacher. He does a lot of clicker questions and test are challenging, but I am glad I took this class.
Matthew Gerner is so cute and you can tell he loves his job! He is a great professor who teaches his course material well. DONT ever skip class and the online homework is required.
This man is awesome. He helped me figure out how to pass with an A and what I should do in the mean time. He is really nice and actually seems that he wants to teach. Great man. No complaints.
Yes, Chemistry is a difficult class... however, Mr. Gerner made it as bearable and understandable as possible. He is such an intelligent man and he genuinely cares about his students. You can tell he loves his job because his eyes sparkle during lectures. Make sure you go to class, do all the homework, and go to him for help.
Professor Gerner is intelligent and a good man. I can tell that he cares about his students and that he loves what he is teaching. Chemistry is a hard class, if you show up to lectures and do the online homework you will be fine. It also doesn't hurt to go to the test reviews. He is a super nice dude.
Dr. Gerner is by far one of the best teachers I have ever had. He truly cares about what he teaches and wants everyone to pass. I would highly recommend him.
Dr. Gerner's class required a lot of out of class studying and work. In lectures he went over the concepts to clear up any questions that the class might have. You definitely have to apply yourself in this class. He does good examples in class to better help us understand how to do the work.
This is a huge, lecture hall class, so you don't receive a whole lot of individual attention. However, there is SI groups, which really help solidify the material. The professor is great at explaining difficult concepts and always comes to class excited to teach. He provides a great frame work for students to succeed, but you must work hard.
Helpful
very difficult course, very time consuming class, but Gerner is a very good professor
Gerner was a great professor! In an auditorium with about 300 people, he would walk around and explain things to those that didn't get it. He was readily available to help. In the end, I needed only about a 55% on the final to make an A. You earn points for attending lecture and answering questions, but I skipped a couple times and did fine.
This course will not be easy, but it's set up to where its hard to fail. Homework, attendance and S.I. are weighted the same as tests so make sure you go to class and do all the hw. Gerner is super caring and understanding and made going to class at 8 AM actually enjoyable.
He is very friendly, nice, and is very personable when it comes to teaching his class. When it comes to grading the tests he grades hard. The department switched to a new type of test so you can get partial credit, but he doesn't like to give partial credit. Before the 4th test the homework was ridiculously heavy and everyone did bad because of it.
Dr. Gerner is just about the best professor you can ask for when it comes to a class as hard as chemistry. He's funny, really kind, good at explaining, and incredibly intelligent. This class is fast paced, takes a lot of work outside the classroom, and you can't get away with barely studying/ not doing the homework. also- JOIN AN SI
Great Professor, you will have a "Excellent" semester. Do the online homework and attend your S.I.s and you will succeed. Says "gram" strange tho. He loves his job. Like, comment, subscribe to his YouTube.
One of the best professors ever. He's "Excellent" at his job, and genuinely likes and enjoys interacting with his students.
Mat, is an amazing teacher. I have yet to skip his class because of how much this man loves his job. Every lecture seems to be fun and exciting to go too. Just going to class and SI will make this class with Matt an Easy A.
You can pass if you show effort. He makes the learning videos that all the chemistry classes show for lecture. There are plenty of extra credit opportunities and reviews available. He is super kind and likes to have fun in class.
Gerner is my absolute favorite professor, as he fully understands the material and truly cares for the success of his students. Although the course set up is a bit daunting, if you take all assignments on Mastering Chemistry and Aleks serious, you are set up for success. Attendance is also very important for points as well as for practice.
Dr. Gerner is very clear in his lectures. Hes easy to understand and will take any question, no matter how small! He is a wonderful professor to have in your first semester of college if you are still getting the hang of things.
Mr. Gerner is a great professor! He is very enthusiastic in his lectures and loves teaching students. Chemistry can be a hard topic for a lot of students, but his lectures are very easy to understand. He gives a lot of homework, but its really for your benefit.
Professor Gerner is a GREAT professor. The grade that I made in this class was not his fault at all, but more because of the way the class is poorly set up in general. The flipped classroom style of teaching is horrible and not even the BEST professors can not save you from it. If you have to take chemistry, I HIGHLY recommend Gerner.
If you are going to take chem 1; TAKE HIM. He is a great professor. He does a flipped classroom; which is great. He has all of his lectures on youtube and they are really good at breaking things down. He provides great feedback. Took him for Summer 2. He made it an 86% and you get an A. Gave extra credit. Study the practice exams and do the HW.
Great professor! I attended the professor-student dinner at his home, him and his wife were so nice! Great layout of the class- he would explain the concept, work out a problem with us, and then had clicker questions and explained them. Grade is from Aleks, clicker, SI and tests. Difficult but study the practice tests and you'll get an A.
Best chem professor. He is very passionate about his job and makes class interesting. Sadly he is moving from fun Chem to chem 1. Lots of in class participation points and lots of homework due every Wednesday and Sunday. Always makes sure to move around the classroom and help anyone who needs it.
Matt Gerner is a very good teacher and wants everyone to do good in his class. He gives you reviews for each test which help a lot and the way he grades also helps you out a lot. If you study, go to class, and make sure and do all the ALEKS topics you should be fine. Loved him, he is a very nice man.
Gerner was definitely my favorite professor this entire semester. You can tell that he's so passionate about his job and works really hard to make sure everyone gets the best grade they possibly can. ALEKS, the online homework, though is a huge pain and I absolutely despised it. Other than that, if you want an A in chem, take it with Gerner!
Professor Gerner is an amazing teacher. He is a very nice guy and his lectures were great. There is a lot of homework in this class, but if you do the homework, go to class, and study you can easily make an A. I would definitely take him again 10/10.
Gerner is one of those professors that is too smart for his own good. You can tell he has a passion for chemistry, but sometimes he forgets that his students don't really know much about the material. To be successful in this class you must study. Use his powerpoints, because he uses examples from his powerpoints on the test quite often.
He was always so enthusiastic and ready to answer any questions. The course was tough, but attending SI and doing the ALEKS helps. He put out practice exams and their answers before each exam which helped a lot. Overall a good course.
He is literally the sweetest. His class was super easy if you did the work on time and went to class. He explained topics well and his tests werent super hard if you studied well. You get what you put into this class for sure.
Gerner is a really, really smart prof. which sometimes makes the class more difficult then necessary because he explains things the complicated way, when there's usually a simpler explanation. Go to class, SI/tutoring, DO the HW, and practice practice practice! the math problems.
This is by far one of the best Chemistry Professors I have ever had. I am even taking his Chem 2 class next. He is very dedicated to helping students learn and understand. He explains things very well! As long as you go to class and put in effort, you will do well in this class. Just beware the many choice questions on exams!!
Everything was great in this class, except for the test prep. There was no way to actually get taught anything because he didnt explain it well. The tests are terrible to take which is what determines the outcome of your grade. I attended office hours but they did not help because he cant explain and break the problems down to a smaller level.
His tests are ridiculously hard and are nothing like the practice material. No partial credit for math problems on the test, so goodluck getting credit for those questions. Learning catalytic questions are a waste of time, he should be using that time to actually teach instead of breaking us up into small groups. AVOID THIS TAKING HIM!!!!
I love Dr. Gerner! I made a D in chemistry back in high school but he showed me how to really love chemistry. He is the sweetest professor and he gives many opportunities for boosting your grade. HIGHLY HIGHLY suggest taking him, you'll be so lucky!! Obviously you have to put in the work and study but the work isn't hard and the tests are great!
Mr. Gerner is not COVID-friendly. He is not forgiving, and he does not count your work on exams as partial credit because it is online. If you miss an exam due to medical reasons, he will not give you an extension and will just expect you to replace it with your final. Good teacher in person, not so great online. Class is gonna ruin my GPA
Gerner was one of my favorite professors at Uark. Before COVID-19 hit, he would invite students to eat dinner with him and his wife. He cooked students a meal and played fun board games to get to know us better. He truly is so caring and wants you to succeed. Chemistry is hard but stay on top of it, study, go to your SI, and you'll be alright.
Before COVID-19 hit, I'd give Mr. Gerner 5/5. This semester, I've lost some respect. A friend was in the hospital before an exam, and he refused to give a make-up or extension and said the final grade would replace it (making the final 32.5% of the grade). During a pandemic. This class is also harder online - an *extra* exam + no partial credit.
Dr. Gerner did a good job of making a difficult class manageable. This class is extremely challenging and a lot of people knock the professor for that, but he did a very good job of explaining the content and helping when necessary. You can tell he cares about his students. YOU MUST STUDY OUTSIDE OF CLASS TO SUCCEED IN THIS COURSE!!
Gerner is a great professor, I had him for both Chem 1 and 2. He's very clear about what will be on the exams and is very easy to get in touch with outside of class. He made the information understandable, but you gotta make sure to read because a lot of the in class questions come from the book. Homework is pretty manageable, only once a week.
the worst ive ever had. i retook the same class with a different professor and did ten times better. i know many people who have failed with gerner. hes good if chemistry actually comes to you naturally, but not if you struggle to understand the concepts and the math.
Professor Gerner is a nice man and is very enthusiastic about chemistry. However, this class makes absolutely no sense. In class, you are not actually taught things. He just goes over stuff that you are supposed to spend an insane amount of time teaching yourself how to do prior to class. He goes way too fast, & his class is ridiculously confusing.
Had him 2 years in a row and it was for sure the worst 2 semesters I've ever had. flipped classroom sucks. He does not explain well the class is horrible. moving online was the most mind-numbing thing. 1/10
Professor Gerner is easily my favorite science instructor ever. Not only does he make it clear that he cares, but he also creates spaces to engage with him and his family, personally (this made all the difference for me). You can also tell that he teaches with a spirit of excellence and passion for making the material accessible for everyone.
He gives out so much homework and doesn't explain anything. I have only gotten A's my entire life and I have been taking college courses since my sophomore year of high school. I have a D in this class. The Teach Assistants are rude and they aren't much help. I would never recommend this professor. He is a good person but not good teacher.
Take him. Do not take another chem professor. I have never learned more from a class than I have this one. But dont expect to do well if you dont do the pre class work and make a good effort to understand and absorb the material. I am so glad I took him, its the first time I have understood chemistry. im taking him for as many chem classes as I can
There is a LOT of outside work (everyday before class you have assignments, multiple textbook chapters to read, and videos to watch) BUT it is not that difficult if you put in some effort. Mr. Gerner has a ton of office hours open and all of the tests have extra credit. I was able to get over 100% on all the tests so if you TRY you should do fine.
Professor Gerner is an amazing person. He makes his lectures interesting and is fun. Also, is very understanding of the fact we all have lives outside of class.
Sitting down and listening to his lectures became enjoyable because extremely positive attitude. No matter the question he will stop what he is dong just to make sure that you understand everything you need to know. Really kind and passionate man, wish more professors were like him.
He is good at teaching but not a good professor. He will give no mercy to students during the pandemic. He has no sympathy for his student.
Although Professor Gerner is a good teacher his exams are nothing like the stuff we do in class. He gives practice exams but the questions on there never help and are nothing like the questions we get on the exam. I understand everything in class but Im barely passing. Attendance is mandatory since he does LCs and that counts towards your grade.
Dr. Gerner is a very very nice man and he makes going to class worth it. He is an excellent teacher and so knowledgeable to the point where you will enjoy ANY class he teaches. He is just a very kindhearted person and really cares about his students. If you have any circumstances, let him know and he will make accommodations! Best prof ever!!!
He is a nice person and you can tell he enjoys what he does and wants students to succeed. Although, when you go to him for help he just repeats the same thing over again or gives a whole new definition rather than helping you solve the problem at hand. He refused to round up no matter how close your grade is.
Gerner is a great teacher. I had him to Chem I and Chem II and he really cares about the subject and all the kids - his class is just super hard. Make sure you understand the seem-irrelevant examples from in class - they show up on tests more than you think. And study hard.
Gerner is a good professor and my only complaint was that I felt the practice exams did not reflect the actual exam very well. The practice exams would be way easier than the actual exam. This class is hard and I think he does his best. You absolutely need to read before class or you are going to fall behind cause lecture moves very fast.
Gerner might be the worst teacher Ive ever had in my academic career. I used to be a Pre-med major but he made me hate science so much that I changed. He has Before class assignments and since we are supposed to do those he just glances over them in class. Is class not the time we are supposed to be able to elaborate on the topic?
calls his lecture a "flipped classroom" which translates to: teach yourself chemistry then in class I'll ask questions over the stuff you were supposed to teach yourself for actual points, not even completion.
Dr. Gerner is a really nice guy, but his chem 1 class was so difficult to grasp the concepts at first for me. The whole class was self-guided online and the lectures were not that helpful since he only talks about the topic for five seconds and then moves on. I wouldn't take it unless you have some background knowledge in chemistry first.
I've always been good at chem, had over 100%'s in high school. This class and this "teacher" has taken every ounce of enjoyment away. Its a flipped classroom & you literally teach yourself everything & hes not accessible at all. I genuinely felt like he didnt care about his students succeeding. Exams are impossible. 0/10 worst "teacher" I ever had.
This is a flip classroom where your expected to teach yourself everything and magically know all the answers. The lectures are mandatory and the outside work is outrageous. I hope that you all get the chance to not have a flip classroom so that you have the chance to do well. This class also made me doubt my future!
Chemistry is hard. Chem is a huge effort class. But if anyone should teach it, it's Gerner. Gerner's lectures are ridiculously straight forward, the tutorial videos for problems are straight forward, and his presentation style is perfect. He's a phenomenal teacher. Would take again in a heartbeat.
Yes, chemistry is a very time consuming course, but this professor has no mercy for his students. He doesn't curve anything ever and never wants to give extra credit for anything. I payed a lot of money just to have to teach myself this course. He makes the exams, and makes them impossible for people to do well on. People quit premed because of him
I had the pleasure of attending his lectures when he started the flipped classroom model, the pleasure is sarcasm.... I heard that before he started the flipped classroom model it was a lot better with testing, there were partial credit given. very hard class and you teach yourself everything.
Gerner was always excited, encouraging, and informative, and made chemistry as easy as it could be. Chemistry is going to be difficult, it's fricking chemistry- but Gerner made it enjoyable and beneficial.
he is a very nice man but boy is this class hard test are online via lockdown browser all open response questions with a built in curve.. yet somehow it doesn't help much there are many opportunities to get points in this class via hw and attendance but no way of getting any partial credit on tests when questions asked i feel more confused #dropped
Professor Gerner is amazing! He teaches with lots of passion and does everything he can to help his students. The homework is tedious, but built in exam curves give you a crazy amount of bonus points. The class builds on itself so do not skip class, focus in lecture and read the short chapters BEFORE each class and you can easily ace the course.
Gerner teaches Chem I in the spring, which is the wrong time to take it. Take Chem I in the fall if you need the credit.
I have always struggled with Chemistry, but I was able to get a high A in this course with Gerner! Lectures move at a face pace, but reading/taking notes of chapters BEFORE class and attending class is a game-changer! Wants his students to succeed, so listen to his tips for exams! (Rework LC problems, Learning Objectives, Practice Exams, etc.)
Matt Gerner is one of the best professors I've ever had. You can tell as a person that he truly wants you as a student to succeed in his class and will give you the world to do so. His lectures are engaging, and he always brings a level of enthusiasm and excitement that makes showing up to class fun. There's lots of resources to reach out for help.
the people who would give gerner a bad review i can promise you they didnt spend enough time studying
Matt is a great professor. The ratings with 1 are incredibly biased and don't represent him as a perdon or his ability to teach. He does amazing
Best chemistry professor you will find on campus. He does a very good job at explaining what is going on. The grading of test is a little odd but he curves 25 point on every exam, and if you miss class he is so understanding and does not count it against you!
I don't reccomend, but if you end up having to take this professor I recommend finding the best si instructor for you and maybe extra tutoring depending on your chem background. If you have a very small chem background then you will most likely need extra tutoring to even pass.
Professor Gerner is a great person. I believe he wants us to succeed but the way the class is set up is not sustainable and has unrealistic expectations for students. I took it in the spring and exams were all open responses with no partial credit. It requires so much out-of-class work. You have to teach yourself material with little in class help.
Great Professor but a lot of homework. Probably the best professor i've ever had. He explains everything very well and is really passionate about the class. He is always looking to improve the course and himself as a teacher.
Chem 1103 was the hardest class I've taken by far. Matthew Gerner was a nice professor, but this class is definately lecture, homework, and test heavy. It's also easy to fall behind. If you're taking this class, just know it's going to be a class you have to put extra time and effort into.
Matt is a really good teacher, but Chemistry is a hard subject. The lectures are straight forward, and there's questions asked through learning catalytic, but you can use the textbook. As for tests, they are open answer math questions, but I've gotten points back by letting Gerner know of questions that were counted wrong but shouldn't've been.
There are a lot of bad ratings on here, but Dr. Gerner is as good as it gets taking Chem 1103. Many people struggle in this class, because it is most definitely one of the harder classes you will ever take. Thus, people take it out on the professor when he is doing as good of job as you could ask for. Lots of work, difficult topics.
To be honestly, chemistry isn't very hard. At least it wasn't for me. he gets a 1 because as a professor that's what he deserves. He's not good in class, doesn't believe in extra credit which is fine but your attendence is graded using quizzes that you have to do well on. The class usually does not. Also there's an obsessive amount of homework.
Professor Gerner releases a pretest before every exam that is almost exactly the material that is on the exam. He also has great lectures and notes that makes it easy to learn.
If you're taking chem 1 in the Spring, take it with Gerner! Once you get the hang of his system it works and you can get the grade you want. I was in 18 hours and still pulled off an A. Go to class and do the homework on time.
Gerner was a tough teacher, especially when you take him having little to no chemistry background.. I would feel so confident on the tests and homework and I would get a very low grade. I went to several tutoring appointments and I joined study groups, but chem never clicked for me. and outside help was not offered until the end of the semester.
I love him!! He was such a good teacher and am taking him again for CHEM 2. There are so many extra credit opportunities, like homework, extra points in class and he genuinely explains so well. I have been so bad at chemistry ever since I could remember but he makes it understandable.
Gerner is amazing! He is incredibly kind and always willing to help you. It is a very hard course with a lot of information so it can be difficult. Take good notes and go to class!!
Gerner is amazing & knows a lot about chem. best chem teacher at uark of course, chem is very hard and is difficult to receive an A but it's not impossible. He is always available for help with homework and test reviews via email and office hours.
Do not listen to bad comments about Gerner! he is amazing. Chem is just very hard and the people who do not do well only have themselves to blame not Gerner!
Gerner was the best chem professor I have had. His teaching style is very organized and he is great at explaining tough material. If you pay attention in class and study for exams, you will do just fine. He helped me not only pass the class but actually understand the material. I highly recommend Gerner for any chemistry class you have to take.
He is hands down the best science professor i've had. Very tough class if your trying to just pass. Constant effort is the only way to do good. Tests are very hard unless you continuously study weekly. I made an A studying 3 days before every test but also a "built in curve" basically bonus points on each test with a final replacing lowest exam.
LOVE!!!! dr. gerner will always tell you exactly what he expects and his lectures prepare you very well for exams. chem 2 is math heavy, so SI and homework is really helpful for practicing. he's so bubbly and friendly which makes lecture easy to attend. there's also so many opportunities for bonus points
If you have to take chem then take it with Matt Gerner. This was a difficult course, but he is an amazing professor and cares about his students. Attendance is mandatory, honestly, if it wasn't I definitely would have failed. He is understanding, so if you miss and email him with an explanation he will fix your attendance.
Mr. Gerner is amazing. U Chem 1 is obviously a hard class, but there is no one better to take it with. Each exam has a retake opportunity for full credit, and your score on the final drops your lowest test grade. He literally invites students over for dinner at his house. He is the most caring and genuine professor I have had here. Take his class!
Professor Gerner really cares about his students and their success!! He's super positive, and loves talking about chemistry, he loves to get to know his students and help you out whenever you need but his class itself can be difficult just because its chemistry....But he does give you all the resources he can to help you do well.
Gerner is so amazing. Chemistry is a hard course but he makes it understandable. If you are struggling he is easy to contact through email or his office hours, which I highly recommend attending. Never thought I would understand chemistry but he made it manageable. He started offering retakes on exams which helped so much.
He is such a nice teacher and also very accessible with his office hours. Chemistry is really tough, however, if you went to his office hours or emailed him asking for help he is very open to all the questions you may have. Highly recommend taking chemistry with him!
Dr. Gerner was hands down one of the best professors I had ever taken! From withdrawing Chem 1 in 2020 to completing with an A in 2024, he is the best. I will say in this order: do your homework BC and AC class assignments, re-learn learning catalytics, and DO HIS RETAKES!!! Chemistry is hard but it is doable and especially with Dr. Gerner.
Professor Matt is an amazing Professor. He offers a ton of help if you're struggling with concepts. He also explains a lot of the coursework on his YouTube channel. Class is not mandatory but you get points for going. I wish I could have him as my chem 2 Professor next semester.
Dr.Gerner is a good professor. If you ask him questions and go to office hours, he will address any questions that you have very thoroughly and succinctly. If you want to succeed in the course, do these things: 1. Do all the AC and BC assignments on time. 2. Practice LC problems, in-class problems, and textbook problems to study for exams.
Mr. Gerner was awesome for Chem 1. He goes into detail with each topic but sometimes is too fast to keep up, so be prepared to study a lot and go over the material outside of class. Other than that he is great and has a cheerful personality. You can tell he wants everyone to succeed and he loves teaching!
I took Matt Gerner in the summer because I was previously a nursing major that took fundamentals of chemistry. After not learning anything in fun chem, Gerner was amazing. Yes, chemistry is the hardest class I've ever taken, but with Gerner, it is very doable. Take advantage of your retakes, do your homework, and DO LEARNING CATALYTICS!!!!!
Hardest class I have ever taken. For reference, I have a 3.95 GPA (Year 3). I made the mistake of enrolling in this class as a business major (nearly got a C as a result). You can't skip class unless you score A's on exams or you will be in catchup mode (I didn't miss once & scraped by). Flipped classroom was horrendous. HW constantly. Need notes.
Dr. Gerner teaches very difficult classes, but he is extremely caring and capable.
Professor Gerner really cares for his students and what he teaches. He teaches well and can answer any question you have. He's also excited to be teaching Chemistry and that was a game changer for me.
It's a hard class, but if you do the daily readings and study well, then you'll be fine. Dr. Gerner explains the material very well and is clearly passionate about chemistry. The exams are curved and there are opportunities for bonus points. He is definitely the best chemistry professor at UARK.
Dr. Gerner is such a fantastic chemistry professor. The class has hard exams and a lot of homework, but due to test retakes and heavy curves on tests, it's not a particularly hard class. Dr. Gerner is such an amazing, caring lecturer that it makes the class enjoyable, which is hard to do for a chemistry class. You won't regret taking him.
Professor Gerner is a passionate instructor who makes chemistry engaging. While the course can be challenging, he provides ample resources and extra credit opportunities. Utilizing study tools like unstuck study alongside the free textbook can really help.
Dr. Gerner is a caring professor, but his class is difficult. I hate the flipped classroom. If you don't spend all your time studying chemistry, you will NOT do well. He does curve exams and offers retakes, so that can be very helpful. It is just a difficult course. I would recommend Gerner out of all the chem professors.
Gerner is amazing. Yes, the class is hard, but he is a phenomenal professor and wants you to succeed.
This teacher is the best chemistry teacher there is here. take his chemistry class.
Easily the best professor in my academic career Genuinely cares about his students, and is constantly smiling and excited to teach Answers each my questions with enthusiasm and would sit with me for over an hour drawing diagrams to explain how hybridization works during his office hours Calculated each of my exam scores to calculate my grade
This professor uses a flipped classroom, If i wanted to watch videos to learn i would have taken online classes. he teaches NOTHING in class. after the first test he completely lost me and I have failed the 2nd and 3rd tests and im about to fail my final. I cannot understand chemistry at ALL and he is not helping me to learn.
Gerner's an amazing teacher who cares about students & chemistry and is always positive. People on here who rated him low did NOT try. He offers 1-2 3 min videos to watch to prepare for each class and offers practice in class. Each exam offers retake to replace the first test & he does exam review sessions. Office hours cleared up questions I had
While he seems passionate, it feels a bit patronizing and kinda demeaning. He is extremely fast paced. I did appreciate the retakes, but the precurves don't make sense because it doesn't account for the difficulty of the specific test. My critiques mainly fall on the class structure. It feels you are learning how to pass the class and not chemistry
Gerner is really fast paced. If you miss one class you should meet with him during office hours because EVERYTHING builds off of each other. Every. Single. Thing. It is really test heavy and extremely reliant on what you can teach yourself. If you don't have the time to dedicate to the class, don't take it.
He is always very jolly, and a great professor especially compared to the other chemistry professors. There is homework every week that takes 2 hours at most. Also, there are videos to watch before every lecture. When studying for tests I only studied the practice tests and got above a 97% on every test. The retakes make the class extremely easy.
Mr. Gerner is awesome! You can tell he loves his job and knows what he is doing. Those who rated him low or failed probably didn't give it their all. Chemistry is a hard subject to begin with but he does a great job at explaining things. If you do not want to put in the work to do well, then you won't do well... it's that simple.
Professor Gerner is by far the best Chemistry teacher the school has to offer. His lectures are clear, and any content that I had questions about was answered in the lecture. The man has a clear passion for teaching and genuinely wants to see students excel. Plus, exams are graded on a huge curve, so if you study, you should do well in the course.
Gerner did a great job teaching Chem 1. The exams have good curves and retakes. Attendance and homework is required. Great guy that seems to love teaching Chemistry. Class is tough but he made it easy to understand. All exams were online and not proctored. He also rounds for an A at 86%. By far the best Chem 1 professor, would highly recommend.
Hardest class I've ever taken and Gerner didn't really help. Only positive I'll give him is that there are a lot of other things that can bring your grade up other than the tests (which are impossible) but even for those you have to go above and beyond. Very draining class and glad I got it over with. I will say gerners a great guy, but bad prof.
The test retakes if they are still doing them will be your saving grace. Lectures are good, he expects you to have done the reading or watch his videos before lectures, but if you forget from time to time you will be ok. Super nice guy and genuinely wants to see students succeed. Would have take him for chem 2 if I could.
The class itself is hard but he is the best professor on campus to have I wouldn't take anyone else but Gerner from what I've heard.
MATTHEW GERNER what a MAN!! Legit my favorite professor I've had since being in college. I took Gen Chem 1 with him. He pays very close attention to detail and breaks down all the problems and even color codes the steps to make them easier to follow. He always said what to start with for the word problems and actually explained WHY we do things.
Gerner is my favorite professor at Arkansas! He gives you absolutely everything you need to succeed, despite it being a hard class. I learned so much about myself and chemistry with him. TAKE HIS CLASS!
Professor Gerner is the head of chemistry at uark. I did not directly have him as a teacher, but I would still recommend choosing him because the other chemistry 1 professors use Professor Gerner's powerpoint lecture slides and exams. Professor Gerner is the best option for choosing a Chem I professor, and his videos are extremely helpful
Despite this being a very difficult class, Mr. Gerner gives you everything you need to make an A. If you go to class and stay on top of the weekly homework you should be in good standings. He is super helpful during office hours as well. Definitely take him over the other profs because they all use his slides and he explains everything super well!!
Matt is great. The course is definitely hard but he offers so many resources (like exam retakes and Q&A sessions) for you to succeed. Go to class and put in the work, especially for the exams, and you will do great in this class
Cool teacher but the class itself is hard so studying before exams is crucial
Gerner is the best chemistry professor at UARK, and the other professors just use his slides. It is a difficult class, so make sure to get Gerner's, as it is the only way you will understand anything. It is nearly impossible to try and fake attendance, as he will call your name out to see if you are actually there.
Mr. Gerner makes one of the hardest classes so much easier than it has to be. I've never seen someone so passionate about what they teach and he always has a smile on his face. Mr. Gerner is always willing to help a student in need. One of the most enthusiastic people you will ever meet. Each test has a retake option, except for the final.
Matthew Gerner is the best professor for university chem 1!! He understands all the material and explains it very well. Lectures and participation matter, but all of it is to prepare you for the exams. They give you retakes on all of the exams except the final, which is super beneficial. It helped us to understand the material! Recommend highly!!
This class takes work but if you study for the tests and the retakes an A is attainable! Set yourself up for success by studying the first attempt exames before the retakes and giving yourself a cushion before the final. Gerner always has a smile on his face and is a very genuine and nice guy. He wants everyone to do well.
hes awesome.
This class is what you make it. If you work hard for an A you will get an A. Go in for office hours! He is willing to help and genuinely cares
Do all the extra things! Go to office hours, go to Q&A sessions, take the retakes even if you get a good grade. This class is hard, but if you put in the work you WILL get an A. Gerner cares a lot about his students and is willing to help you. ASK FOR HELP!!!!
This class is definitely hard but you can do it!! Stay on top of things: go to class, take notes, study more than you think you'll need. Go to the Q&A sessions and office hours. Mr. Gerner cares a lot and is always happy to help.
Chem is just a super hard class point blank but Gerner truly gives you everything you need to succeed. People who rate him badly didn't care enough. It's a hard class no doubt but just stay on top of things and do all the extra stuff available. Gerner is very willing to help
Chem is hard in general but you CAN get an A. STAY ON TOP OF THINGS!!! Everything builds off each other so you will use test 1 info on every other test and so on. In my opinion the homework wasn't helpful, the test are exactly like the in-class and video questions.
I recommend taking this class at a community college. Professor Gerner truly cares about his students and was a great instructor. If you struggle, he encourages you to get help. The real challenge is the fast-paced curriculum. There's a lot to cover quickly, so without a strong study plan, it's easy to fall behind.
Best professor I've had so far. Really cares about the students and almost all of the exam questions are from the learning catalytics questions in class
It's hard not to glaze too much but this is probably one of the best (if not the best) lecturers at the University of Arkansas. Clearly cares about his students succeeding and is passionate about teaching. His tone in lectures is almost like we're his (100-or-so) kids and it's extremely wholesome.
He was great! Lots of practice problems during class, mandatory SI, and homework make it SO easy to understand everything! He has a YouTube channel with videos to watch before hand to get the concept before class which are extremely helpful! Tests have huge curves built into them with retakes! Amazing teacher!!
GOAT of chemistry love this man protect this man at all cost
The best chem 1 teacher there is, the chem class has changed drastically compared to a couple years ago and has so much opportunity to pass with a B, could've gotten an A if I tried a little harder lol.
If you want to pass CHEM I at UARK, take Gerner. Your other two options are horrible. He's pretty good about explaining material and is easily accessible outside of lecture. You will have to study at least 6 hours outside of class if you want to pass.. It is a lot of material in a short amount of time.
Dr. Gerner was the best teacher I've ever had for the hardest class I've ever taken. He showed up to teach 4 hours after the birth of his daughter.
This is such an amazing professor, if you have to take Chemistry try your absolute best to get into Gerner's Class. Chemistry is already a hard course but he just makes it so much easier to understand.
The goat, as long as you go to lecture and pay attention and complete your homework, you'll do just fine. Gerner is a great professor and cares deeply about every student. If you ask for help he will help.
A great teacher with a lot of care for his student's success. He makes it very clear at the beginning that he expects 12hours of work on chemistry a week, if you put that in doing homework, watching videos, etc and study for your tests, you will succeed in the class.
I had Omogo for chem 1 but wanted to write a review for Gerner because I went to his office hours a lot and it was SO helpful. Chem is hard and somehow he explains it to where it makes sense. Even if you don't have him for your professor go to his office hours to get help. It's basically free tutoring and nobody goes so take advantage of that!
If you want an A in this class, show up to every lecture. Exams are decently difficult, and in my opinion, based too much on vocab and memorization. Exam retakes do help, and overall I'd say the class and professor are fair. Attendance is 15%, and if you don't keep up with homeworks, it is hard to catch up.
professor Gerner is literally the best chemistry teacher i've ever had in my life. in every lifetime i would pick doctor Gerner. matty baby is literally AMAZING. chem 1 is hard, but like professor Gerner makes it as easy as possible. Just be prepared to do alot of homework.
Gerner is so amazing it's insane. His lectures easily cleared up any confusion I had and he seems so passionate about chemistry the lectures were actually enjoyable. He's very easy to contact outside of class and is super nice. He also gives a very clear schedule of what will be discussed in lecture. Definitely my favorite professor this semester!
Dr Gerner was great and if you are taking Chem I he is definetly the best one to get by a mile. He cares alot about his students and truly wants you to succeed. There were also retakes and if you study the class really wasn't too bad
Not going to lie if you dont get Gerner for Chem I your probably cooked. The test are difficult but if you study and do the retakes youll be ok in the class
