Bro Grey is amazing. Although he isn't a full-timer but a grad student of Middle Eastern Archeology at andrews univ. he is great and - call me Isaiah - will soon rank with the likes of Susan Black, Randy Bott, etc. He enables you to get the big picture and dig way deep at the same time. Very clear, precise, energetic, friendly teacher.

Brother Grey is AMAZING! He requires a lot of reading (especially packets), but it really does help. There is only one test (the final) which is really easy if you did the reading. As long as you read everythin and go to class, you will get an A!

Brother Grey is awesome! It was by far the hardest Book of Mormon class that I have taken, but so worth it! He required a lot of reading form the book and also a packet, which included things that not very many people know or think about regarding the Book of Mormon. If you have the chance to take a class from him do it!

Grey is a complete stud. He hooked up an end of the semester pizza party combing his RM class (all dudes) with his freshman class (mostly girls). His kids are adorable and his wife is a fox. Class really isn't hard - just interesting. We had like one test, and the questions were STRAIGHT from the Study Guide. He is a genious. I learned a TON!

I love Brother Matt Grey. I met him in Jerusalem (long story) and he was very kind. He is an archeologist and knows all the facts about Jesus' time. His supplementary readings were very interesting original sources: did you know Josephus wrote about John the Baptist? He knows everyone's name, cares about you, and is super excited to teach religion.

Professor grey is great! loved his class I learned a ton from new testament. Very passionate about his subjects, does make you read a lot though. Some of the reading doesn't seem important, but some is really cool. Kinda favors suck ups, but thats all teachers.

Brother Grey is so great! He is sincerely concerned with whether or not his class is being understood. No papers to write, just study guides. And all the test questions come straight from the study guides. Perfect.

Brother Grey is a great guy, but definitely not my favorite professor. If you're looking for a super easy A, this is the class to take because there are no papers and all the homework is completion, but I didn't feel like the content was challenging enough for me to get much out of it.

Great class. Awesome teacher that really loves material. Very kind. He has great assignments that count for 40% of your mark (do them and you'll get a hundred percent on that part). The tests are slightly challenging. But pay attention in class and study. He is an ancient near eastern archeologist so he is brilliant with this stuff.

Dr. Grey is a great professor. He is really concerned about the class and if they understand what he is teaching. However, I felt like I didn't learn very much; he is not a very engaging teacher. If you're looking for an easy A, this is the one to take, but if you want to learn a lot, take it from someone else.

I really like Professor Grey. He gets so much out of scriptures, he is very intelligent. Such an easy class. There is a reading assignment every day (easy) and then if you study those you will be prepared for the tests. Overall great guy, class wasn't always very spiritual but I still learned a lot.

Professor Grey was a GREAT professor! I loved his historical/academic focus on the Book of Mormon. You learn so much but you do not feel stressed by the coursework. Definitely take from him!

No writing assignments and multiple choice tests. Need I say more? There is a reading assignment due almost every class, but he tells you exactly which verse to find the answer in, and all the test questions come from those assignments. If you just read through them before the tests you should get above a 90% on the test. So easy. Learned a lot.

professor grey was an incredible teacher. I had him at 8 am and had no problem staying awake in class. I learned so much in his class, and your really get into the history of the BoM, not just the same things you've been learning since primary. He's basically the Indiana Jones of Religion Classes. If you want to learn and have fun, take his class.

I have never learned so much new stuff about the gospel that really helped me grow. He is chock full of information and he is so reasonable with homework and tests. He is so passionate. I LOVED New Testament.

Pro. Grey is a good teacher. Requires a lot for a religion class, but he loves the material and loves teaching it. The tests were straight forward and easy if you did the assignments. Takes a very historical approach to the NT, but it was definitely interesting.

Dr. Grey is awesome! I love his historical perspective. And I feel like I have come to know and understand the scriptures more than I have in any other religion class. He isn't afraid to challenge traditional ideas and really makes you think. Tests are super easy if you do the reading questions everyday.

By far the best religion class I have taken at BYU. I had heard great things about his class and was not disappointed. His lectures are awesome and time seemed to fly. His background and education added so much to his lectures and was very enriching. I highly recommend this class. If you pay attention and do the homework you will do great.

Very high quality. The combination of a scholarly perspective with spiritual insights made the class more rigorous, but more interesting and enjoyable, than most other religion classes. Homework and tests were generally easy, but were good gauges of learning.

Unfortunately, you can get by with doing absolutely minimal and mindless worksheets. Study them and you'll do well on the exams, but you can easily get an A without really knowing the material. Too easy.

Dr. Grey approaches the Gospels in a way that varies from the regular methods and is more effective. He is passionate about the subject which makes the class enjoyable. The workload is not very challenging (like the other comments say) but if done correctly, you will learn so much more than you'd think. Dr. Grey is by far my favorite BYU professor.

Definitely one of my favorite BYU professors! He really cares about students and helping them be successful and learn things that are useful for their entire lives! The assignments are not especially difficult BUT extremely effective in helping you learn! I wish I could take all my religion classes with Grey!

This class changed by life- Dr. Grey is seriously amazing and I learned more than I could have imagined. A whole new perspective- he really knows his stuff. Do the homework- super helpful for tests and for class. He is ALWAYS willing to answer questions and help.

Grey was a good teacher for Book of Mormon. Each Class you are assigned 10-15 questions due the next class. Your test is the same questions as the homework just in multiple choice form. As long as you keep on top of the homework, you'll be good.

This is the first religion class I've taken that is not all touchy-feely. He is an archaeologist and teaches mostly the history. I have always hated history, but MAN, he teaches so well and is so energetic and insightful. GREAT PROFESSOR

This is a good class. The professor doesn't study it as a "devotional" perspective. This class is a study of the history of the New Testament. While it is spiritually uplifting, it is more like intellectually enlightening. 2 questionnaires weekly, which also act as the study guide for the tests as well. Final is not comprehensive. Good class!

Fantastic class and fantastic teacher! Brother Grey's lectures are always thought provoking and engaging! He presented the information in ways I had never previously considered! Greatly enriched my understanding of the Book of Mormon!

Dr. Grey teaches the Book of Mormon from an interesting perspective because he's an archeologist and deals with facts and history. He brought to light new details I'd never heard of or considered, which enhanced my testimony because the things he said were logical and made sense. I particularly liked his Isaiah approach. Tests are piece of cake.

Amazing professor. I changed my major because of this class. Teaches from a historical perspective and is so insightful. Tests are super straightforward and if you know the material you'll do really well on them. Would recommend Grey to absolutely anyone.

Dr. Grey is AMAZING! This class was definitely my favorite this semester. Before this class, I had not been really interested in the New Testament, and now I love it. He makes the gospel of Jesus Christ truly applicable. His tests are kind of difficult.. they are completely based off of the notes/homework, so you have to get it right. Easy class!

Matthew Grey is the bet professor Ive had at BYU. He definitely gives a different view point than I think many of the other religion professors teach. It is so refreshing and I stay interested in every lecture. He is very animated and. I think he does a good job at distinguishing opinion from doctrine. Tests are based off homework, so do it right.

This man is amazing! He is the kindest, most interesting BoM professor. He's one of those Mesoamerican archeologist professors, which helps him to give the coolest insights. And he explains Isiah in the most chrystal clear way in the Isiah chapters. Just fill out the homework and study it for tests and you'll be golden! Tests aren't too hard.

He was a great teacher and he is very knowledgeable about the subject matter. He uses interesting viewpoints and looks at the NT with a historical context. His tests were much harder than I expected though! You will have to study hard in this class!

Dr. Grey is awesome! He is an archaeology nut which he uses as a foundation in his approach to the course material. On many homework assignments he gave us outside sources that provided historical context for the chapter(s) we were covering and it made the New Testament really come to life. Not to mention I really enjoyed his lectures. Recommended!

This is a great class. Dr. Grey looks at the second half of the New Testament from a very academic setting. I learned a lot from this class. It has increased my knowledge of the scriptures and doctrine. He does require more work than most than most other religion professors but it is well worth it. Don't take the class from anyone else!

If you want a religion teacher that teaches the history of the text, this is your guy. I learned a lot about the history of the New Testament with Dr. Grey. You MUST do EVERY assignment and study for the tests - I got straight 92s on all 4 tests but got a B+ because I missed 4 assignments. Put in the time and you'll get the grade you want.

Dr. Grey knows his material really well, and is passionate about what he teaches. He really wants students to genuinely learn, and not worry about grades, so he structures his class accordingly. If you just do your homework and go to class, the tests are more than fair. Really energetic, so class is not boring at all. GREAT learning experience.

Professor Grey is great. This is the 3rd class I have taken from him. He gives great historical background, cultural context, and multiple perspectives to the scriptures. He doesn't spoon feed you anything, but won't overload you with homework. Tests are very straight forward. His classes have really expanded my knowledge of the scriptures.

This was honestly the best religion class I've ever taken. Dr Grey is one of a kind! His lectures and even his homework blew my mind every time. I learned so much from him and looked forward to his classes. His tests are extremely manageable if you do the homework and study guides. They outline EXACTLY what will be on the test! TAKE FROM HIM.

Easy religion class. I still learned and thought his lectures were interesting as well. There was a pretty easy reading assignment due every class (twice a week) and those were the study guides for the tests. There were a few more tests than normal but they were pretty easy and only 25 multiple choice questions. You are graded on attendance.

Dr. Grey is an amazing professor. I left class feeling like my mind had been blown every single time. He is extremely passionate about the life of Jesus Christ and the New Testament, thus it shows in the way he expresses things, which is then contagious and makes learning easy. His tests are not difficult, and homework is somewhat minimal.

Everyone seems to like him on here, but I wish I would've taken this class from someone else. He's somewhat arrogant & talks too fast. He's always rushed in class. The homework takes forever & there are 5 tests. 94% is the cut off for an A.

I've taken multiple classes from him and I would take more if I could. He is easily my favorite professor on campus and I appreciate his focus on historical context within the scriptures rather than being really Sunday school-esque.

Passionate about the subject. Current scholastic knowledge about scriptures. Communicates in fun, happy, clear way. Very friendly to approach and encourages students to think deeply. He is great at not superimposing our culture onto the authors of the bible. The hw improves learning from the reading, not detracting. Strong testimony of Christ.

Professor Grey is the best teacher I have had here at BYU! I specifically waited to take Rel 212 until he was teaching it again and am so glad that I did. His lectures are so interesting and educational. He teaches not just the scriptures but the actual history behind them which makes them so much more meaningful. I highly recommend him!

Dr. Grey is the BOMB DOT COM! I wish he taught every religion subject, because if he did, I would be there. There is a person down below who says his lectures aren't spiritual and questions whether he believes in the divinity of Christ. Uh... this person was having a bad day because his classes are extremely spiritual he DEFINITELY loves Christ.

Dr. Grey is fantastic! He's very up front at the beginning of the semester about the kind of class he teaches so you know exactly what you're getting. There aren't any papers or projects that try to force spiritual experiences. He focuses on the history of the text so that his students can better understand/teach from the scriptures. Looking for an easy-A religion class? Don't take this class from Dr Grey. Looking to learn a TON about Christ and the historical context that he lived in? Take this class from Dr Grey! It's SUPER lecture heavy and pretty boring in class sometimes but he gets really in-depth and teaches a ton about Jesus' life and the time that he lived in.

Dr. Grey is a great guy and he is very passionate about what he teaches. My testimony grew so much from being in his class. There is a homework assignment due before every lecture. The only thing on your grade other than these homework assignments are the tests which are really easy if you do the assignments. Take this class from him!

Professor Grey has great insights and really helps you understand the scriptures from an intellectual stand point and not just the spiritual stuff, but he does both so it's a great mix :) Just go to class and take good notes and you'll do well if you study.

Minimal work for a guaranteed A and a guaranteed testimony builder, exactly how a religion class should be. He really likes to go into the academic, unbiased side of the life of Jesus, which I found interesting. Tests come straight from the reading assignments and lectures. Lectures are usually very interesting, but sometimes kind of sleep inducing

I changed my major because of Dr. Grey and it was the best decision I've ever made. I've always loved the scriptures, but he brought a depth and understanding that I had never experienced before, and I learned more than I had thought possible. I didn't even need to take this class, but did because I found out he was teaching it. Highly recommended

Ah Dr. Grey. My favorite class. I really learned so much and enjoyed the class even with its rigor. The context it provides to the Bible was so essential to my understanding of scripture. Dr. Grey's enthusiasm is infectious and he is so personable and connects well with his students. We were all obsessed with him. I'm a disciple of Grey.

I love Dr. Grey! I had him at the Jerusalem center and it was awesome!! He is so passionate about what he teaches that it rubs off on you. You do have to pay attention and work hard in class but it is so worth it! Ask Dr. Grey about latrines

No complaints. He's the best lecturer and he's so excited about what he teaches. The info just sticks in your brain because he's so happy about it all. But sometimes the assignments aren't clear and if you ask, he'll just say "well it says it in the rubric" but it really doesn't. That's my only compliant. Other than that, he was fantastic!

Dr. Grey teaches the new testament from a more historical perspective. I absolutely loved every minute (even though I am not a very religious person). Fairly LGBTQ+ friendly.

Prof Grey is THE BEST religion professor I've had. The lectures aren't generic Sunday school lessons. He connects the OT, NT, BOM and historical writings together to help you truly understand and love Jesus . I will always remember this class. He challenges you to see the bigger picture and consider ideas that you haven't before. I learned so much!

Dr. Grey's class was great for a religion course. Downsides: REQUIRED attendance or grade will be docked beyond like 2 absences. Reading questions before class worth 25% of grade and can be very time consuming. Upsides: great lectures. Easy tests if you do the reading question assignments. Overall Easy A and fulfills a general.

Dr. Grey is so passionate about his subject and it is infectious. The homework is graded on completion and the test questions are formed from what is discussed in both homework AND lecture, not just one or the other, so you know exactly what to study. He can get on (related) tangents and get behind in class sometimes.

Dr. Grey has been one of the best professors I have taken at BYU. While his class was rigorous for a religion class, the material he covered and the depth and context he provided in each lecture has impacted my outlook on the New Testament dramatically. Doc Grey was amazing! I learned so much about Christ and feel a lot more knowledgeable. This class will help my scripture reading for my whole life. Doc Grey is hilarious and the class is a super easy A if you go to class.

He is an absolutely phenomenal teacher. He was super approachable, very concerned with how his students were doing, and very fair in all of his grading and tests. His class was incredibly spiritually uplifting. My favorite religion class by far. I would often talk to him after class about deeper topics, and he was always super respectful.

The units are broken up into 5 smaller tests throughout the semester, and he is really good about telling you when something will be on the test during his lectures. I feel like a lot of religion classes feel like glorified Sunday School, but I really felt like I was getting a University level education in this class. He is very knowledgable about what he lectures, his lectures are entertaining, and he's very accessible outside class.

Dr. Grey was by far my favorite professor that I had for religion. He was very kind and cared deeply about his students and the material. He gives you everything to succeed in his class. Be ready to read a little bit as every assignment he gives you is about 30 minutes of work but the tests are straight forward and he gives you a study guide.

You will learn a lot about the context and history of New Testament as well as more about who Christ is. The readings are all relevant and he prepares you very well for the tests. This class is a LOT of work. Dr. Grey's up front about it, and you learn a lot because of the work you do, but nonetheless this is not a class to take for an easy A. I spent 3-4 hours a week doing the reading assignments and corresponding questions. Dr. Grey was also consistently behind, but he gave us study guides to compensate.

Grading is simple: hw completion, exams, & don't miss class. Exams are multiple choice & very short. The hw is one set of reading questions before each class. There is a lot of reading, but the hw is very specific about where to find each answer, & the material is so cool! No papers, low-stress, amazing lectures, & so many scriptural insights!

Professor Grey does a great job lecturing and really knows the material inside and out. The first unit had a ton of Dates and Locations that you had to memorize but after that, it wasn't too much work. He tells you exactly what will be on the test and gives a compressive study guide before each test so you always know what you'll be tested on.

Dr. Grey is passionate about 1st century Jerusalem and the Jesus that ancient Palestine would have produced according to our understanding of the culture, politics and Judaism of the time. He wants students to comprehend Jesus and the New Testament in context. Some of the tests are harder than most religion tests. Lots of weekly reading.

If you want to become a serious student of the scriptures, take a class from Dr. Grey. He teaches fascinating lectures about what is really in the scriptures and what the books and letters really meant to the original audiences. It will enrich your scripture study and your knowledge of the gospel and of Christianity as a whole.

Dr. Grey is great! Lectures are based on hw guides you fill out before class. He says the exact information needed for the test, directly from hw. He teaches the historical background and builds from that to ensure greater understanding for the spiritual aspect. If you study the material from class you'll do well on tests. Pray for first for Charity, then Hope, then Faith, read everything, attend, and pay close attention to his PowerPoint Presentations. You will pass with an A. The reading is a bit more extensive, but if you do it with real intent you will feel and end inspired. Awesome teacher.

Very incredible professor. Loved his historical approach. The memorization of maps seems hard at the beginning but is way worth it. Would recommend for anyone that wants a good university class on religion and not another seminary class.

Dr. Grey taught me so much about the nature of Jesus this semester. We studied the context behind the bible stories in great depth with a heavy emphasis on history. We had to memorize specific dates and events, but the learning payoff was worth it. He literally told us what was on the exams. Don't let this fool you, the exams are not a breeze.

I loved this class. He focused on a lot of the history of the New Testament which was SO cool. I learned something new each week. Some of the homework takes a long time but they were mostly pretty quick to fill out. He is so smart and you could tell he had a plan for each lesson. Fill out the homework, take notes in class to study, and you'll pass.

Dr. Grey is a very enthusiastic teacher. His class is really historically based which puts the content into a fascinating perspective. It was really cool learning what he taught. He always says he's outlined what will be on the test, but it was still sometimes unclear. Also, the homework assignments are long and have some confusing questions.

Dr. Grey restored my faith in BYU Religion Classes! He focuses on the historical side of the New Testament, but it's so you can better spiritually understand the scriptures in context. Just graded on reading questions and 4 exams. The reading questions actually feel worth doing, and the lectures tell you everything on the exam. Take his class!

Dr. Grey has probably been my favorite religion professor out of any I've had at BYU (he was my 6th). This is not glorified Sunday School, this class felt like an actual college level course. He leans heavily on teaching the history and context of the material, and his tests mostly focus on those kinds of facts, not his own interpretation.

I feel like this is a bit more work than a 2 credit religion class should be BUT i think its worth it because hes awesome. He does the more history side of religion which i personally appreciated and enjoyed. Super interesting. You can tell he cares about your opinion and your grade.

Dr Grey is PHENOMENAL. You can tell that he is truly passionate and excited about his work and area of study. His lectures are very engaging, but he does talk fast (he has recorded versions of lectures on LS which are useful). The readings are reasonable and he clearly lays out what is will be on the exams. You won't regret taking his class!

This was the last religion class I needed and I am so glad I got to take it from Dr. Grey! He is so enthusiastic and knowledgeable about not only the Old and New Testament, but he also taught us about the history of Jesus and the world around him while he was alive. I thought it was so cool! The homework doubled as a study guide, too!

Dr. Grey is awesome! I loved this class. He wants you to succeed and provides everything you need. Very spiritual class and informative about Jesus Christ. Very clear reading assignments and if you go to class you will know everything you need to. Workload was not heavy.

He has truly been my favorite religion professor at BYU. I'm continuing to study at BYU after I lost my faith in the church and this class was very friendly to that situation. We are heavily focused on the New Testament and it is very much a scholarly look at the gospels. This class made me want to study Jesus so much more.

You guys HAVE to take a class from Dr. Grey, he's amazing. His class was by far my favorite, and I left class every day feeling like I knew Jesus so much better. Dr. Grey has a super fun, happy energy and you can tell he really knows what he's talking about and he loves it. None of the work is super hard and it's all really interesting.

Dr. Grey is an awesome teacher. He gives you a super good understanding of the New Testament, but his tests aren't hard at all; he literally gives you the test questions beforehand. This is the perfect class to take.

Cannot explain the love I have for this man. Has an unbelievable understanding of the New Testament, and the outside context of what is not easily found in the Bible. He has great insights and makes things very easy to understand. Homework due every class, not too difficult. Exams that he prepares you very well to succeed on!

Dr. Grey takes the New Testament and teaches about the historical context as well as the contents of the New Testament. He is quite passionate about what he teaches and his lectures are really fascinating. He asks for our thoughts frequently, which sometimes makes us go overtime. Overall, he's a great teacher.

Dr. Grey was easily one of the best professors I've had here. He is unique in that his lectures are very engaging and have the central purpose in helping people better understand Jesus Christ. The curriculum was very clear, and if you put in some effort, you gain a lot of new insight and appreciation for the course material. Highly recommend!

This class was my favorite religion class at BYU! Very informative and structured simply. You are graded on reading assignments/notes (due before class, took about an hour for each one), attendance, and five non-comprehensive exams (to which he gives you the answers in class ahead of time so you definitely want to attend lectures). Very fair class!

I very much enjoyed professor grey this semester. He truly made me excited to go to class and learn more about Christ. Throughout the whole class you really can see that this man has a strong testimony of Christ and has learned so much about Him and wants us to learn about Him as well. He cares about our opinions. Really amazing teacher!!!!

Professor Grey approaches the New Testament from a very academic perspective which I appreciated. It helped me feel the spirit and gain a deeper testimony when I actually knew the context of the scriptures. Tests are 100% multiple choice and there are no papers. Overall a pretty good class.

Professor Grey is fantastic. He comes into class every day with a skip in his step and you can tell he loves this material so much and he can't wait to share the goodness with everyone. My whole perspective on Jesus Christ and the gospel was enriched. His grading is clear and the class is straightforward and easy if you are basically invested.

Fantastic lectures. Changed my perspective on the new testament completely. Knows his stuff. Willing to answer difficult questions. Speaks a million miles per hour, because he wants to tell you everything about the topic at hand. You can tell he loves what he does. Class is pretty easy.

Class was a new perspective on the NT with background. Professor Grey was knowledgable and taught clearly. The class organization was structured well. You can't submit any of the smaller assignments late, and they are worth 1% of your grade so beware of that. You're prepared for tests very well and the questions are typically very straightforward.

I took the biblical temples test run class. Learned so much! He is super great and knows his stuff. His lectures are engaging! There is a lot of reading during the week, but the tests were super easy. I don't know how his other classes are but he is a great professor! Definitely recommend!

This class is brand new, but I can tell that Dr. Grey is an amazing professor. I enjoyed my time in this class. If you want to learn more about temples, I would recommend this class if it's offered in the future. Dr. Grey talks fast and is a cheerful man. If English is your second language, it might be difficult to follow his speech.

This class is very insightful and I learned a ton. I came out with a much deeper understanding temple ritual and symbolism. It was a little bit more difficult than the average religion class but completely worth it. His exams are a lot of memorization, but he points out in class almost exactly what will be on the test so there were no surprises.

This class was slightly more intensive than most religion classes. You must be willing to put in a bit of work, but if you are, the return is amazing! I learned so much about biblical temples and it gave much-needed context to modern temples. Prof pointed out exactly what would be on the exam. It is clear he cares about the topic. Highly recommend!

Professor Grey is one of the most stellar teachers at BYU. I recently took his Temples of the Biblical World class (392R) and loved it so much. The lectures were stellar, I actually found that the workload was really quite easy, and I'm not even an ANES student. If you are willing to put a bit of effort in, you will learn SO MUCH. 10/10 recommend.

This class greatly improved my Biblical literacy and my understanding of temples both ancient and modern. Dr Grey cares greatly about the student experience and is willing to adjust the course schedule or pacing to help facilitate understanding. This was probably the best religion class I've ever taken. 10/10 for both class and professor.

This was a new class talking about ancient/biblical temples. Dr. Grey knew the topic very well and the lectures were amazing! The reading assignments were easy to follow and directly correlated to class discussion. Tests were a little difficult but as long as you attend class, Dr. Grey was very explicit about what would be included on the test.

Some ratings complain that his class isn't spiritual enough but I think it depends on your application of the material. He is passionate about helping students develop biblical literacy to strengthen personal faith and to better equip us to build bridges w/ other faiths. It helped me connect to Christ, His word, and other Christians more deeply!

Dr. Grey is one of those professors at BYU who focuses heavily a context-based reading of scriptures. Through this class I learned so much about ancient Judaism, Christianity that enhanced my biblical literacy and inspired me to learn more. Tries to fit waaay too much in his lectures, but don't miss any of them! Amazing class and great professor.
