Seems easy until the test. Takes easy points off for stupid things. Som EC though
He is very helpful one-on-one but in lecture, he goes really really fast. If you need help, definately go to his office hours. He will help, but its hard to ask questions in such a big lecture.
This teacher rocks ! He is great ! Material is difficult, need to study hard, but he is willing to help in any way he can. Always available in his office for questions, goes into MS3 lab to help also with group work. For Nursing...he is the best Organic teacher to take. Must study hard but it is worth it.
Good prof. Helpfull and smart. TEST ARE HARD THO.
Fantastic professor. Although tests are rather difficult, he presents the material extremely well and is very relatable to his students and makes the material understandable. Very helpful if you go to his office hours, very willing to help you with anything. I would highly reccommend taking his class.
What a great prof! Probably the best i've had so far at GV. Yes the class is very difficult but he tries to make not quite so bad. Make sure you go to all the lectures and use his office hours, he is always willing to help :)
Excellent prof. he is was so helpful and willing to answer any questions. test can be very difficult but if u study and understand the material you will do well. i would highly recomend taking his class
Prof Hart was by far one of the best Profs I've had. The class was very difficult but he was so helpful and very easy to talk to. I would tell anyone to take orgo with this prof. He was great!
The tests were way too hard. He even said that they would be hard for an orgo chem major, which I think was a bunch of crap. He's a very nice person, but I didn't like him as a teacher. Didn't explain things thoroughly. If I didn't have my tutor, I would have had to retake it for sure.
Awesome professor. I had previously failed CHM 231, because I had a horrible proff, but Hart is awesome. He even held extra classes for those who didnt quite get it yet.
best prof. helps you anytime you need it. go to discussions and look over your notes. i never used the book.
Orgo is a hard course, but Prof. Hart was always willing to take his own time out to devote extra time for those who needed extra help. He understands that people struggle with the course, and does make an effort to help everyone do the best that they can!
He's a really good prof., yeah the tests were hard maybe sometimes harder than necessary but its a hard class. If you read the book and review like he tells you to, you will do fine. He's always there to help you, he even made extra review sessions for us.
Very very helpful. Always willing to help outside of lecture, set up extra review sessions twice a week to help us out. His tests are hard, but the material is hard and his tests make you apply what you have learned to newer things. I'd highly recommend him, it is alot of work but if you put the effort in, it will pay off.
Prof. Hart makes tons of time to meet with students, notes are fill ins, and he explains the material very well, great prof. to have for organic..
Dr. Hart was the most helpful professor I've ever had. He set up so many study sessions to help us out. Overall, the class was quite difficult, but he helped us through it. I liked his partial notes. Tests were from his notes, although the book helped clarify things occasionally. I'd definitely recommend him for organic.
This prof. knows his stuff and he is really nice, but that just can't make up for how hard the tests an quizzes can be. I'm sure he knows how hard they are for us students but thinks he can ask us for that higher level....I disagree. The exams blew me away.
Dr. Hart is a great person and I liked having him as a professor. The only complaint I had with him is that he made exams unneccesarily hard with certain questions that would deliberately trick you. I studied way more than one should to get an A.
Hart was an amazing prof. Possibly the best I've had in college. He really cared about his students and was readily available for them. Hart's tests were on the difficult side, but only because they weren't testing memorization skills (which he informs you of... often) but your understanding in general. I thought he had a great sense of humor.
Hart really knows his stuff. He's difficult and often sarcastic, but helpful if you ask for it. Exams are very challenging because you really have to apply what you've learned, often in ways you haven't seen before. Doesn't post grades to Blackboard :( Still good though.
If you have to take organic, take it with Hart. He's the best professor at Grand Valley period. The class is difficult, no doubt. His tests suck. But, if you want to learn and want somebody who's going to help you learn, this is the guy.
Orgo is very hard, but Hart is an exceptional teacher. Will really make you work, but you will know your stuff when you're done. Hilarious, personable, excellent teacher. We were all good friends by the end of the year.
Hart was an amazing professor, who made you know your stuff. His exams were quite hard, but if you put in the necessary work, you could definitely handle it. He would help you with any questions that you had, and would even do study sessions before his exams. Great professor.
Hart is a fantastic professor. His exams are meant to be difficult, but he knows that so don't freak out about it. Lots of studying involved. However, you will never find him failing to answer a question. Definite recommendation.
Dr Hart is a great teacher. He is very interested in making sure you learn the material; however, it is organic chem so there is a lot of work involved. Your grade is based off of quiz and test scores, which makes it hard to do well. His tests are known for being difficult. There are problems you've never seen before so you have to think critically
If you want to learn and have fun doing it, take Dr. Hart. This is a professor that knows how to teach. The class may be a challenge, but he is at such a high calibar that you will be solving advanced problems in your sleep before you are done. Someone should clone him, because all you need is a university full of Dr. Harts.
I thought Dr. Hart was awesome. As everybody and their mom has already said, his tests are on the challenging side, but he's also very nice when it comes to partial credit (even on multiple choice!) so don't panic. He'll always help you if you're confused and is generally a nice and friendly guy. I liked that he let us drop a test.
If you just want to get through Organic Chem with a good grade and little work, don't take Hart. If you really want to learn the material to prepare you for grad school or MCAT exam, take him. He really makes you understand the material and teaches you to think critically. Great professor!
Professor Hart is a great prof for orgo! His exams are hard (just like all other organic chem exams) but he is very willing to meet during office hours or outside of class to answer questions. He teaches the material well and encourages you to use your textbook. Overall, he's a great prof!
Dr. Hart is a nice guy & very helpful, but he doesn't teach well in my opinion. His exams deal with concepts never taught in class. His philosophy is that we should be able to answer questions on exams if we know the principles involved, but there were many problems that could not be explained in the book or notes. Take him if you want a challenge.
Really nice and helpful and devotes time for study sessions before exams. Orgo is problem subject for me but he made it easy enough for me to understand and pass.
MY FAVORITE PROFESSOR. Hart genuinely wants his students to do well. His exams can be difficult but he gives you everything you need to do well in the class. Take him if you're willing to put forth effort.
Hart is a great professor. He offers to make time out of class for review sessions before his exams, which is incredibly helpful. His exams are difficult because he wants students to apply concepts instead of just memorizing. You will see problems on exams that you've never seen before.
My first time taking 241, I had dr. Winchester. The second time I had Dr. Hart, LIGHTYEARS BETTER. Very clear and approachable. My only problem was that there is no textbook required for his class, but the book I bought for my first 241 really really helped. I recommend buying the textbook instead of the question/answer manual.
Dr. Hart is an amazing professor and he is always willing to work with you to understand the material. He always tries to have a review session before his exams.
He is really helpful, and lectures are worth attending. He is funny, and he makes learning bare-able.
Professor Hart is awesome! I actually enjoy going to class because he is a really great teacher. He is very chill and explains things really well. He also gives a lot of good practice for the exam. The thing is that his exams are very hard and the last average was a 66%.which he thought was pretty good. But no worries, he curved it to 68! :(
"No one will ever fault me for not raising the bar." - Dr. Hart I really had a good time in this class. Hard exams and not a lot of room for error. He expects that you will be able to apply the concepts come test time. Wrote memorization will get you no where in this class. My favorite prof so far by a long shot.
Dr. Hart is very helpful and a nice guy but tests are ridiculously tough. You will be tested on things you've never seen before and the averages are very low. It is very difficult to prepare for the exams. He cares about his students and provides help for you if you ask for it.
Hart is a good professor in the sense that there are only positive interactions with him; however, I would not recommend him for organic chem. His notes are sparse and you don't get many examples during class. Its either you get it or you don't in his class, and that isn't something you want when starting orgo. Good luck.
Professor Hart turned a class I thought I would hate into my favorite class at GVSU. His class is similar to watching khan Academy but better! His exams are difficult, but it's Organic Chemistry so in order to get a good grade you need to study and attend lecture. If you want to learn Organic Chemistry take Professor Hart.
Had Dr. Hart for both 241 and 242 hands down was the only reason that I passed orgo, It's a tough class with a lot of content but with Dr. Hart and some effort it's not as bad as the horror stories that you hear. Would take again for sure.
His class is hard, but it's also just a difficult subject. I disagree with a person below me, you'll never be tested on something you didn't learn. He has a habit of integrating concepts from a whole unit into one problem. Some people find this hard, but it forces you understand what you're doing, NOT to memorize the subject. Good prof. Take him.
He really understands college students and understands most people in this class are pre-professional students. Tests are really hard, but gives lots of extra points for other assignments.
Dr. Hart is an amazing professor. He always makes himself available to students, students just under utilize him. Class is HARD. Dr. Hart teaches quick, which can be challenging but overall great professor. Does all he can to get you to understand. Material in the class is hard, but he makes it easier.
Dr. Hart is a great professor. He is very thorough in his explanations and his lectures are easy to follow. He tells typical professor jokes but his are top notch. This is a fairly difficult class but Dr. Hart makes it more bearable.
Great professor. He's honestly like a dad. Gives great notes, really nice guy, very helpful in the Chemistry Success Center. The class is hard, but that's because it's organic chemistry, not because he makes it hard.
Dr. Hart is overall a good professor (can be sassy at times). Class is really hard because it's organic chem. His lectures contain a lot of information and he does go quickly. You have weekly quizzes that he sometimes lets you take home or do in groups. His tests are relatively hard and sometimes will put material on there he hasn't gone over.
If you had to have a professor for orgo, I would recommend Dr. Hart he LOVES what he does and you can see it in his lectures. He makes every lecture so enjoyable and makes himself SO available outside of class. He wants to see you succeed, and offers so many opportunities for you to succeed. Put in the work and you will do well.
I highly recommend Dr. Hart. I don't like chem & I loved this class. You will need to attend & take good notes because he is a tough professor. However, he posts outlines & wants you to succeed. His tests are hard and he likes to challenge you but he gives chances to make up points if the majority of the class does poorly. Hart loves what he does.
Solid professor, he's a really nice guy. However, his exams are HARD. The examples shown in class are very straight forward and simple compared to ones on the exam. On every exam there was a short answer question worth 8-10 points on a mechanism that we had never looked at in class. Definitely a better choice than other profs though
Take Professor Hart, he is a great professor, with great lecture notes, and great explanations. He cares about his students and is going to push you to learn the material. His exams do not ignore the difficult nuances of orgo, but his worksheets prepare you well for the type of problems on the exam. Overall, the best orgo professor at GVSU.
Take Dr. Hart! He really cares whether you learn the material and was available to help. He does give out a lot of worksheets, but go to his office hours and he'll work through them with you. His tests definitely have some of the harder aspects of orgo, but he give partial credit and tries to give you as many points as possible.
Doctor Hart is a very nice man, but his notes do not have much explaining in them. They are pretty much just worked out problems. His tests are also very hard and the questions on them are not always fair. He is one of the better professor for this class though, just make sure to really really study and ask for help
Dr. Hart was very unorganized & was not helpful outside of class other than to give you simulations on what grade you can receive upon completion of the class. He would post notes last minute (like 1-2 hours before class starts) and of course it is expected for you to print it out. His tests are stupid hard and he expects you to know orgo already
Dr. Hart is a great professor who lectures in an organized and concise manner. His tests are difficult, but he offered extra credit for every exam and allowed you to fight for points back in his office hours. On one test this semester he offered up to 8% worth of extra credit. If you do not do well in this class, it's a reflection of you, not him.
I loved him
I love Dr. Hart. He loves to teach and is passionate about chem. He makes the lecture interesting and has great notes. His tests are decently difficult and he gives lots of opportunities for extra credit. He's one of my favorite professors that I have had. As long as you study hard and do all of the work you'll succeed!
Dr. Hart is a fantastic professor, you can tell he cares a lot about the material he's teaching and that you're actually learning. His tests are notoriously hard, but he's super accessible to answer questions and also gives partial credit when you show you've done the work. If you're taking 241 or 242, try to get him.
I love Dr. Hart. I had him both semesters for orgo chem. He loves chemistry and you can tell. He is very passionate when he teaches and he keeps you engaged. His tests can be difficult but if you pay attention and do all of the homework you will be just fine! He has a lot of opportunities for more points and has some extra credit!
I went to his office hours to talk about my grade and he laughed at me. Like straight up laughed in my face when I was concerned about my grade. He is disrespectful and rude. I would never take his class again.
Dr. Hart was one of my favorite professors! Genuinely cared about his students. Organic is already a difficult subject, but he teaches it in a way that you can understand. He gives a lot of extra materials and he is fairly accessible out of class! You can tell he works very hard to help his students succeed.
Wonderful professor, you know he knows his stuff and he can teach it well, and he does care about his students. I had him for both 241 and 242, his notes are very easy to follow and fill out. His tests are hard but not impossible, he does give extra credit opportunities. Please appreciate the fact we always comes dressed in a sweater vest and tie.
Dr. Hart is one of the most caring professors I've ever had. I would not have done so well in orgo chem if it weren't for him. His homework worksheets and Pearson homework actually help you understand the material and tests are fair. He is extremely knowledgeable on the subject and truly wants to help his students succeed.
Dr. Hart is an amazing prof. Orgo is already a hard class, but he wants everyone to pass and is very knowledgable. Ask questions in lecture and you'll understand everything if you work a little for it. He is also very understanding. There are homework assignments online and 4 exams plus the final, but if you study you'll be fine. Take him!!
If you need orgo take it with dr hart! I had him during the pandemic and he handled it better than any of my other profs. He had us watch different modules and then we met in person one day and zoom another and we used that time to practice problems that would be on the exam.
I liked Prof. Hart but orgo was really hard for me. He does a good job posting notes and making himself accessible outside of class, but you really have to put a lot of effort in in order to understand what you're learning. Being online for this class was tough, but overall he loves what he does and he always added some humor to his lectures.
Dr. Hart is an amazing professor. Probably the best choice if you have to take Organic Chem. I struggled in general chem, but on the first day of class Dr. hart explained a concept from general chem and I understood it right away. Orgo Chem is an extremely hard class, but you're in good hands with Dr. Hart.
Dr. Hart is very passionate and caring. Orgo is going to be hard no matter who you have but he really tries to be helpful, even responding quickly to emails. He is funny and kind, but his homework really is hard. I would not want anyone else to teach this class though!
One of the best teachers I have had so far, orgo chem isn't an easy class but he was always available to answer questions or make accommodations when needed. Very approachable when questions are needed to be asked and make the topics as easy to understand as possible.
Seems like a nice person, but I'm not sure why his ratings are so high. Grades homework assignments, which are supposed to be practice, very aggressively, and AFTER the exam. Notes seemed unorganized and jumped around. Exams were a level up from what we learned in class. I was able to pull it off, but I worked ridiculous hours for this class.
CHM 231 is a HARD class, no sugar-coating that. But Hart is a really great professor. He really cares about his students' success. Lecture is important because he sometimes introduced topics or specific questions you may see on an exam that was not in the modules. Go to lecture, office hours, discussion, ask questions, and you'll do great.
Dr. Hart played music during lab and was always willing to help out and answer questions. I was never in lab for the full 3 hours.
His lectures were great. Explains everything really well. Definitely a good idea to attend class just because some material does get harder and he isn't afraid to explain the concepts more.
This is a professor I highly recommend. He does well at teaching the basics and truly has a passion for what he does as well as his students. I would love to take him again for higher-level classes since I presume he will do well.
Dr. Hart is such a nice professor and he definitely knows what he is talking about. He is always available to help. He does get a little mad sometimes when people don't listen and he always posts the notes for the next day late at night.
I really enjoyed having Dr. Hart.. He was very lecture heavy but he usually posted the lectures to blackboard later. My biggest complaint is that he could be rude at times, and he would post notes late at night and expected for us to have them printed out. Grades were very based on exams I thought. Discussions are very helpful
He was over all a great professor. He went over everything we needed to know from the textbook in the notes. I dont think I looked at the textbook more than twice and finished with an A in the class.
Love Dr. Hart! Orgo is hard but Hart has been so helpful the whole semester. Class taught flipped style, so lecture is videos and class is practice work. Lot of HW but are pretty short and 80% is partic. Quizzes roughly every week but are short and he allows one redo with highest grade kept. More frequent tests too and is a very lenient grader.
Professor Hart was absolutely fantastic. The way he designs his class and the way he explains his material has made me understand chemistry more than I ever have. If you watch his pre-class videos and attend as many study sessions as you can, there is no way you cannot succeed in his class. I would absolutely recommend him for any chemistry class!
Dr. Hart is an incredible professor. Organic Chemistry is a difficult class, but he taught it in a clear and understandable way. He always answered my questions in lectures, the CSC, and discussions. There were weekly quizzes, but they helped me learn so much. In-person lectures were all practice problems that helped with understanding. #almondgang
Crystal clear lectures and so many opportunities to reinforce the material. People who struggle with the class typically don't put the time in or watch the lecture videos before class. He genuinely gives you every opportunity to succeed. Exams are not so difficult.
Best chemistry professor at GVSU! Dr. Hart really cares for each and every student and their success. He offers lots of opportunities to bring your grade up. He also has a little bit easier of a grading scale to help receive a better letter grade.
This professor is great! There is a lot of material to do both inside and outside of class but as long as you stay on top of it a give it a sincere effort you will be fine. He cares about what he teaches and will work with you inside & outside of class to help you if you reach out. He gives a lot of examples of problems & provides redos on quizzes.
Dr. Hart is great! Had him for 231 lab, he was super engaging and helpful! Provided clear explanations and was very approachable, walks around lab to make sure nobody is behind. Super friendly guy, would definitely take again!
For CHM231 Lab. He was pretty good at answering questions and providing clear explanations, and it was obvious he cared a lot about how you did in the class.
I absolutely loved taking this class with him. He is very funny in class and keeps your attention. He does post videos to watch before class but the are very helpful study tool to use. He is very helpful during office hours. If you need a due date pushed back he will work with you to get the homework in. Must take him!!
Amazing guy, made organic chemistry understandable. Even for a summer accelerated course, I still managed to excel. You can tell he really cares about his students and he loves teaching this class. I would definitely recommend him. Also grading scale is extremely lenient as well, I think I ended with an 85% which was a B+ for him.
I had Dr Hart for the lab and he was a chill professor. He would help us out if we were stuck at any moment. He was a bit harsh on grading labs and lab notebooks. He does sometimes offer smart comments but I'm pretty sure that's just who he is. You just have to look past it sometimes. He is kinda funny too.
Genuinely the greatest professor or even teacher I've ever had. Cares about the subject and answers all questions extremely clearly. If class doesn't understand, he'll go over it again. Has lots of prep and after-class practice to help you on all exams and quizzes. Class requires a lot of participation outside of class if wanting a good grade.
Dr. Hart is the best professor I have ever had. CHM 245 is the hardest class I've ever taken, but Professor Hart is always trying to help all his students. He gives multiple ways to practice in and outside of class and genuinely wants to see all his students succeed. You will have to do a large amount of practice outside of class, but Hart helps!
