BEST TEACHER EVER. Students from other classes were coming to our section just to take it from him. Super humble and actually likes teaching. Down to earth, realistic, and lets you out of class early. Did homework twice, got an A. I honestly couldn't ask for more.
Heaton is AMAZING! Best professor I've had so far. Go and talk to him during his office hours, he is EXTREMELY helpful and wants you to do better. Tests are kind of hard, but he helps out a TON. He made class enjoyable to go to.
Never had to look at the textbook, reviewed all of his test review slides before the exam, did all of the 10-15 minute homework quizzes after lectures. Got an A. No stress. No worries. Prof. Heaton, seriously, take this class from him. I heard people saying all the time how this was the only class they didn't stress out coming to during the day.
Professor Heaton is the BOMB! He is the nicest funniest guy around. His class is so upbeat and he is on the students' side 100%, you can really tell he loves what he does! His tests were a bit hard, but if you take good notes I'm sure they'd be fine. The lab hours really helped! Take this class from Dr. Heaton you wont regret it!
Pro. Heaton seriously ROCKS! He is so fun! He makes stat interesting and he keeps you awake with his crazy energy! You do not need the text book but get the printed out notes from the book store. The tests are challenging but he helps the class out a lot and he is super helpful if you go into his office hours. Take this from HIM!!!!!!!
This professor was amazing! I loved coming to class everyday because he took a boring subject and made it interesting. There is a lot of work involved but he is willing to help you succeed. DO NOT buy the book. It was a waste of money. If you go to class and buy the packet of lecture notes you will do great.
Dr. Heaton is an amazing teacher who genuinely cares about the success of his students. He wants everyone to get an A and if you go to class, then you will, because it is not a difficult course and he provides many examples that are usually on the tests.
Heaton is the man. Just go to class and pay attention and you will do fine. He tells you everything that will be on the tests and makes sure you know how to do it. Don't get the text book, but get the printed slides from the book store and use them to take notes. He is one of the reasons I decided to be a stats major.
Dr. Heaton is one of the nicest professors I've every had. Very helpful, clear, enjoys teaching. He's amazing.
Heaton is super cool! Great to work with if you ever have any problems with the HW, quizzes, tests... basically anything! The book and online stuff is not need at all... Heaton explains everything well in class and gives great Exam Reviews for all students who attend his lectures to be successful!
Dr. Heaton is a phenomenal teacher! He's engaging and fun and wants everyone to succeed. He's got a great sense of humor. He teaches things clearly. The tests are very straightforward and he makes sure you're prepared VERY well for them in advance. I highly recommend him!
I dreaded taking this class. I went into it with the wrong attitude and it almost cost me a very bad grade on my transcript. Dr. Heaton was not only able to turn that around, but he showed greater investment in helping me than any other teacher I've ever had. You don't have to be good at math for Dr. Heaton to help you get an A. Visit his office.
He is the coolest! Statistics is not my thing, but I've learned so much! He was gone a week and everyone freaked out because no one could teach the lessons like him! He gets right to the point and gives you extremely helpful tips on how to do well on the tests! Lessons are short because he removes all the extra fluff that you don't need to know!
If you have to take stats, take it from Heaton. He lets out early and gives reviews that practically have the answers on them before tests. He's not interested in maintaining a university approved GPA, and teaches the important stuff in a way that everyone can understand. Do the homework, go to class, use his reviews to study, and you'll get an A.
Doctor Heaton is awesome. I have little to no interest in statistics, but he made the class exciting and easy to understand. He is hilarious and he is able to teach clearly and concisely. We got out of class early every time, and his section had the highest average test grades on the department tests. If you need this class take it from him!
He's straightforward about the material and wants you to do well. It was a great class- other's say he made it intesting, but I still think the class was dry. Though, he makes the material understandable. Our class always did better than the other classes (test averages and highs) and I attribute that to Matt Heaton. Use the lecture slides!
Best picked professor ever. If you are worried about Stats 121, take it from him. He is very straight-forward with what you need to know for exams. Excellent at explaining stuff one on one. If you are worried about your grade, go visit him in his office! He will help. Literally! He cares if you understand the stuff. Awesome teacher. Lecture slides!
Funny guy and great professor! All of the STAT 121 classes have the EXACT same structure, ppts, hw, tests, etc but he is the BEST professor at preparing you for the exams! He wants you to do well and really enjoys teaching his class and helping his students! He goes through lecture quickly but because of that we almost always get out very early.
He is an excellent professor! The other statistics professors are great too, but I think he is the best at helping you prepare for the tests! He gives you a lot of hints and great practice problems to help you do well on the department exams (he writes/helps write them). He is quirky/hilarious and very enthusiatic. He REALLY wants you to do well!
Stop reading reviews and go take stats from Professor Heaton right now. He is amazing. He teaches clearly and leaves out the fluff. Class usually gets out early. He wants his students to succeed.
Everyone else yells about Heaton and for good reason. A teacher that teaches basically only that's on the test, he'll cut out all the crap and make it super clear. Classes only are about 20 minutes long, labs aren't mandatory to go to, and he presents stats in a fun way. Take it from him if you are terrible at math/no interest
I was terrified to take this class! Brother Heaton made learning statistics fun and entertaining. If I have to take another statistics class, I will definitely take it from Brother Heaton. I also thought the labs were very helpful. This class can be overwhelming, but Brother Heaton and the TA's will help it be a positive learning experience.
Love him. Seriously take Stats from Heaton. He goes through the material quickly so you always get out of class early but he's a good enough teacher that you can easily learn the material.
Not much of a math person but Heaton is clear and only goes over things you need to know. He emphasis concepts for tests (awesome!!!) and his sections generally do better than the others. Go to class and you'll get bonus for iclickers and can make a HUGE difference at the end. If you have him, don't be scared of stats. Tests are pretty easy.
I wish all BYU teachers were like Heaton. He is precise and will cut class short if there are no questions. He will teach only what you need to know for the test. You learn and get things done without wasting time.
Dr. Heaton is a great Statistics 121 professor. He almost always ends class early and if you need help, he'll stick around after class if he can to help you out. He's funny, and I would highly recommend taking it from him.
I loved Dr. Heaton. He was super helpful and put things in very simple terms so that someone like myself who is not very good at math was able to understand it relatively easy. Books and attendance aren't mandatory but they definitely help. Extra credit from the daily iClickers that he basically gives you the answer to. Definitely recommend him!
Professor Heaton is ONE of the BEST teachers on BYU campus. He is Hilarious. He makes statistics make sense. His goal is to end class after 30 mins and doesn't give us fluff information. He gets to the point to what we need to know. He is very understanding and although I wasn't good at stats I still enjoyed class. Don't take Reese take Heaton.
Professor Heaton is BY FAR the best professor I have ever had. All the hype about him is completely true. I got an A in Stats when I barely passed all my math classes in high school, and I attribute that to Prof Heaton! I went to his office and got help which made all the difference in the world!
Dr. Heaton always ends class early, unless he wants to teach two lectures. He is willing to help. You won't want to miss his class. (remember to attend class to get extra credits!)
Okay, you better take STATS 121 from Heaton. He is a homie. Just register for his class and thank me later. We almost always got out of class early, but still learned everything we needed to for the day. He is short, sweet, and to the point. Definitely would give us VERYYYY helpful hints for test questions and homework.
LOVE Dr Heaton. Take as many classes with him as possible. I grasp the concepts and coding slower than most, it seemed like in every project I would miss something and never earned an A, so be sure to go to class and don't forget ANY step in coding or in any process of research and analysis. BIG TIP: Take a course in R programming first. Fun class!
TAKE STAT 121 FROM PROFESSOR HEATON!! I have been terrified of this class for three years but I survived and actually ended up loving it. If you have questions, go see him during his office hours. He is always willing to help those students who seek help. His lectures are very helpful and he is really good at explaining difficult concepts.
Super easy A. Never paid attention during lecture, but if you go to class you get attendance extra credit, and sometimes he helps you with assignments. Be careful not to forget the quizzes. They come at you fast, and made the difference between an A and an A-. Aced all the tests though.
Professor Heaton was probably the best professor I have had at BYU. I was terrified of taking this class, but the lectures were amazing, and he does anything he can to help you pass. In class quizzes get you extra credit for being in class. He usually ends early and you have time to do your homework after. Take this Professor. Awesome class.
The bar has been raised BIG TIME in Professor Heaton's class. He is an awesome guy and gives very short lectures that are to the point. Seems like he raised the standards alot higher this year though. My friend took Stats (same time) from Prof. Nielson and that class was about half as dificult. (He Got an easy A) while I put in 15 hours/week for B-
Taking STATS from Heaton was TOUGH. Literally one of the hardest classes ive taken in a long time. I was shocked because all the other ratings for Heaton made the class sound easy. My GPA suffered due to his lack of properly preparing us for the tests. I lost a ton on the pop quizes because the questions were super specific.
330 isn't an easy class, but Heaton explains the material in a way that anyone can understand to properly do regression on R. His class isn't easy, he just teaches so well that people get good grades. His homework assignments and exams (larger homework assignments that must be done alone) have real-world application. I loved this class. Nice guy.
Best statistics teacher by far. If you put in the effort, you will learn the material and get a good grade. If you don't come to class it'll be difficult. He simplifies everything but makes you answer tough questions on the spot to help you think things through.
Dr. Heaton is the best statistics professor there is. I would recommend taking him over anyone else in the department. He always ends class early, and will help you with any questions you have about the credit quizzes. The tests are relatively hard, but he prepares you with two days of in-class review. Honestly, such a gem of a teacher!
Dr. Heaton is an amazing professor! He is very concise in his lectures, he doesn't try to confuse you with other materials that don't benefit you. He also usually ends class early so you can finish the online quizzes while still in class. I highly recommend him!!
I have never done a rating of a professor. BUT THE WORLD NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT DR. HEATON! He succeeds at making STATISTICS fun! He ends class early a lot as well. If you put in the work, you will get an A. He is very clear about what will be on the tests. Heck he writes the tests for all the stats sections I am pretty sure! You won't go wrong!
Easy class if you show up, but not a big deal if you sleep in! Get the study guide packet, all his slides are there. Tests are fairly decent if you study. Very structured and straightforward class, formulas given on the test. He wants everyone to pass and will point out ?s that will be on the test.
Heaton is basically the best! Super structured class and if you listen to the lectures he is so straight forward and tells you things that you should study for that will be on the test! Study the study guides and go over his power points and you'll ace this class! Amazing professor, wish i had him for all my other classes!
The Best in the Business. I was dreading STATS, but he made it a fun class. His test reviews are the best thing about the class, but his lectures are clear and to-the-point as well. He's awesome.
Dr. Heaton is the BEST. He gave extra credit for coming to lecture. He would make us special study guides that were very similar to the test. VERY possible to get an A if you show up, pay attention, and study a couple hours a week. Lectures are clear and funny (and short! he let us out early all the time). Buy the lecture notes, not the textbook.
Incredibly clear lectures less study time... I would leave class knowing the material so well (and I am not a stats major) that I put in very little effort to personal study because I already understood everything. Heaton loves statistics, and it really shows. I would HIGHLY recommend this class.
Awesome professor! This class is not very difficult. Most lectures were only 30 minutes, with leftover time to get help if needed. He points out what to study for tests, and if you do just that you should do great! He is also hilarious!!!
It was a huge lecture class, so kinda boring, but he put in a real effort to make it fun! Very clear lectures! If you go to class, pay attention, and do the (5 minute) homework, you will do very well. Instead of buying the textbook, buy the class notes.
Awesome stats professor. Makes lectures as interesting as stats can be. Taught very clearly and usually ended class 20 minutes early which was awesome. Don't buy the textbook, just the class notes. You have quizzes after each lecture that aren't hard at all. I think I studied for 2 hours tops for the final and got a 94%. Super easy GE
It was HARD and FAST PACED but Dr. Heaton does ALL he can to help. He is funny, kind and inspiring with HIS prayers prior to exams. Class ends early so "naturals" can leave and the rest of us can ask questions. Attendance points. Stat Tutor Launchpad videos helped, but the lesson Notebook is VITAL. VISIT his office & assigned/open labs. UCanDoIt!
Dr. Heaton ends lecture early mostly every day so you have a chance to do homework and get help. He reviews for his tests and teaches you everything that will be on the tests. I had friends with different professors that really struggled in this class while I had no problem. Go to reviews and get the extra credit for attending class.
Moves through lectures quickly. All you need is the lecture slide book for class. Super test-oriented, tells you exact principles and question types that will be on the exam. Provides ample in-class reviews, funny guy.
He is the greatest. Makes stats so simple, and genuinely wants us to succeed. Gives so much help and extra credit. I can't recommend him enough!
Awesome. Very engaging, completely willing to stop and explain more difficult topics. Cares SO MUCH. Wants feedback from students, and changes his teaching style based on that. Very accessible outside of class. If you have a chance to take any class from him, do it.
Dr. Heaton is the man! Helped everyone regardless of where they were at to understand how to fix problems related to the OLS assumptions. Class is mostly based on coding in R. Homework is straight forward since he has documents that walk you through how to code what you need. 3 group projects, but no tests. Class average was around 92%.
His grading is very strict and specific. You must use past rubrics. He is really good at explaining tough concepts.
Heaton is the best! He is so smart and the lectures are super entertaining. He used note cards with our names on them so you were called on at least once a week. However, he was chill and wouldn't embarrass you if you didn't know the answer. I would take all of my stats classes from him if I could! Highly recommend!
Dr Heaton is one of the professors in the stats program at BYU that genuinely wants his students to succeed. The concepts he teaches are not easy, but the way he presents them makes them understandable and doable. Best professor I ever had at BYU!
Dr. Heaton has the best lectures. He takes complex material and makes it so easy to understand. He asks great questions and effortlessly keeps the class engaged.
Dr. Heaton organizes this course in such a logical way, then provides homework and midterm projects with real data that help solidify concepts and extend into having individual ownership of what the final product is. His lectures are well organized, and he provides lots of resources because he wants his students to actually learn and succeed.
Best professor I've had at BYU, and I've had some good ones. Saying his class is easy does not mean you don't have to work, but he makes sure you have all the resources you need to succeed. His lectures are amazing so you'll want to go to class, and you come out amazed at how much he taught you. Can't say enough good things about Dr. Heaton.
Dr Heaton is inspiring. He's always striving to make the material attainable and applicable and would frequently extend deadlines or make exceptions for students. The class itself wasn't easy, but all of the assignments helped me to better learn the class skills. After the class, I feel I have a real, marketable skill solely because of this class.
Professor Heaton makes statistics manageable and somewhat enjoyable. STATS is hard but the way he sets up his class prepares you for the exams and he doesn't make us calculate anything. He teaches you the intuition behind statistics and gives us an online database to do the math for us. You should need to understand conceptually where to go and why
I am in Dr. Heaton's "experimental" STAT 121 class. Homework is manageable, lectures are clear, and he wants us to do well. He is very clear about what will be on exams. He and his TAs created a computer program that calculates the scary formulas and all we have to know is how to interpret the numbers. I would recommend this class for a GE.
Take this class from Heaton no one else! He is absolutely the best! Super nice going and funny you'll love it! As easy going as it may seem take his assignments seriously and put in the effort to understand the concepts! His exams are less on calculating numbers and more on interpreting what it means.
Learn how to interpret numbers, put it into words and conceptually understand. Don't worry too much about calculating scary formulas because Heaton and the TA's formed a website that calculates everything for you. Take all the homeworks, in class analysis, and mini projects seriously it will help you with the 3 exams he has. No quizzes.
Phenomenal teacher. Heaton knows that it's a GE class and is great at breaking it down. No mindless calculations here, we learn concepts and let the computer do the rest. Very manageable workload, and Heaton gives a ton of help before the exams, which this semester were all open-note! This was the first Stat class I've ever taken, and it was great!
Professor Heaton is a really cool person! The way he taught STAT 121 was all about intuition and learning how to interpret data sets rather than memorize formulas. He is also super kind and funny and respectful of all his students. I loved coming to class and learning from him!
My section was a pilot section in that we used an online calculator for almost everything, unlike most STATS 121 sections. It was a very simple, straightforward course. Prof Heaton was super helpful and so were his TAs. I learned valuable info with no stress, and the tests and assignments weren't difficult. Great class.
3 exams: open book, not timed, not proctored. Slightly tedious but doable and FUN! Heaton and his TAs created a website with an integrated calculator that does everything for you, just understand how to interpret the values and what they mean. TAKE THIS CLASS, TRY TO TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN! Sad this semester is almost over :(
TAKE STATS FROM PROFESSOR HEATON. He's one of my favorite professors at BYU and did an AMAZING job at explaining concepts. He uses an online calculator and you have to interpret the answers. I learned so much from this class without being stressed or confused about ANY of the curriculum he teaches. He doesn't try to trick you and wants what's best.
Professor Heaton was the best professor I have ever taken at BYU. I was dreading Stats121 and had to take it for my major. After taking his class though I thoroughly enjoy stats. He did such a good job explaining the material in a way and made sure just about everything he taught was practical. He gives you every opportunity to get an A. TAKE HIM!
My class might be different than his future ones (since he was making changes and testing different learning styles one our class) but this was the best math class I've ever took, and I hate math. He's a really nice guy, and the class I took had a ton of TAs, which were beyond helpful. Take his class if you struggle in math but need to take STATS.
Professor Heaton is really passionate about what he teaches and desires each of his students succeed! Everyone should take STATS from him! He will change your life in stats, it's actually fun!
I loved Dr. Heaton!! He made stats so manageable, even for someone who had never taken stats before. You can tell he cared about each student (and knew many by name). Exams were open everything but other people and often had 2 attempts. Each homework had 4 attempts. I never stressed about my grade, but I still learned so much and loved it!
His lectures are great and he makes learning statistics very interesting. He has office hours everyday and is more than welcome to help. He cares about his students. But I also think he is a tough grader, and we only had one extra credit assignment. He also has these cards and calls people out by name during the class.
Professor Heaton is the way, truth, and the light. My friend and I took the other STAT121 class and withdrew, and then took this one a year later. This class is totally it. You can totally get a 100% on all the homeworks/in-class assignments, its way different and easier to get. The TA's are super helpful and professor Heaton should be exalted.
Stats 121 was the easiest class I've ever had in college thanks to Professor Heaton. The semester I took it was a trial class that focused on conceptual understanding rather than doing tedious calculations that computers do in a real-world setting, which made it much easier and more instructive. Tests were open note/book, and pretty easy.
This class is super awesome, I highly recommend taking it from Professor Heaton!! The tests are open notes and for projects and homework, the TAs let us check our answers before we submit them! Professor Heaton is clear about expectations and how to get the best grade possible in this class. He doesn't make it more difficult than it needs to be.
I had heard bad things about Stats. But I was pleasantly surprised when I took Heaton's class. His lectures are super straightforward and often ends his class early. Everything you need to know for the tests is in the slides. The tests can be tricky, but if you pay attention and do your homework, you'll have no problem in this class.
I was worried about taking stats but Professor Heaton made the class incredible. His class is structured in a way so you are able to do well and can practice the material as much as you need. Tests can be a little difficult if you do not grasp the content all the way. He wants everyone to do well and there are resources if you are struggling.
THIS MAN MAKES ME WANT TO MINOR IN STATISTICS. seriously amazing class. if you have to take stats 121, please please take it from him. he gives 4 chances for each homework and 2 chances for each test, and I'm actually learning statistics and have used this to help me in other classes. 10/10 do it.
Professor Heaton makes statistics as a GE both manageable, understandable, and entertaining. The TAs are super available outside of class and you get tons of chances on everything. He made stats fun and helped build an understanding of the material through good, example heavy lectures and clear homework
Professor Heaton does a great job structuring the course to help students learn and actually be able to understand and enjoy the content. I'd heard terrible things about stats before I took it, but he made it very manageable and I 100% recommend him to anyone taking stats for the first time. His class is much less stressful and more insightful.
Having heard horrible things about STAT 121, I was scared for this semester. But Professor Heaton was awesome. Loved how he structured the class, the assignments are super forgiving, the tests are very fair and you know what to expect. Highly recommend to anyone taking STAT 121, again, it was an awesome experience
I could not rave more about Dr.Heaton. I had to take Stat 121 as a prerequisite class and I was SO nervous but it was seriously so great. Dr.Heaton teaches so well and gives many opportunities to get a good grade. Every homework had multiple options so you can retry and keep your highest score. Each exam has 2 options as well. GOD BLESS DR.HEATON!!
I was nervous to take this class because I hadn't taken any stats classes before this but Professor Heaton made this class so doable! There were quite a few assignments but they didn't take very long and had multiple attempts each time. The tests also had two attempts which was nice. If you have to take STATS 121 take it from him!!
I was dreading Stats 121, but this class was a breeze and very fun. It made me even consider switching into Stats if I wasn't so deep into my major. Matthew is a great teacher. Caring, hilarious, and explains things so, so well. He can make you understand something in minutes. When he wasn't there, it was a drag. One of the best here at BYU!
Very good professor, you get 4 tries on each homework assignment, and 2 tries on each test. He will even go over your previous test to prepare you for the second version of it if you want! I didn't study at all and got an easy A-.
I am in no way a math or numbers person (so I was stressing about taking this class) but Prof. Heaton and the way this class was taught and set up made me feel like I could succeed. He understands that not everyone is a stat major and that this class is a GE. You get 4 tries on homework assignments and 2 tries for exams, all of it open note.
Heaton is a great professor. He explains things well and sets clear expectations for the class. Fairly easy class if you just do your work. I still learned a lot though. Also--it's open note everything--even tests which are also at-home and untimed.
TAKE STATS FROM HEATON! You have 4 chances on the homework and it only keeps your top score. You have 2 chances on all the tests and its all open note. If you go to class, take notes, and put a little effort into doing the assignments and tests you will get a good grade. He is also so understanding and will work with you.
Best stats professor at BYU. Makes class super engaging and teaches difficult concepts very well. Makes it clear what you need to know in order to finish homework and projects.
Dr. Heaton turned stats into one of my favorite classes this semester. He has an excellent ability to explain difficult concepts in an easy way. He gave 4 chances to submit each assignment and 2 chances on exams (with different datasets, but similar concepts) and it made the curriculum so unbelievably manageable. TAKE STATS FROM DR. HEATON!
Take stats from Heaton. You'll thank me later.
I am actually shocked the difficultly level is an average of 3. This is by far the easiest class I've ever taken at BYU. Easier than most of my High School classes. You are literally given the answers to all the homework. It is so easy. If you think this is hard you are in for a long few years at BYU. Professor Heaton is the GOAT.
I'm bad at math, but he made this class really easy. Lectures are fast but communicate the information you need to be successful on tests and homework. You have multiple versions for basically every assignment, which helps for learning. A calculator does most of the math for you, so there is no memorization of formulas.
Heaton was great! The stats department as well, theyre definitely pro-student and do as much as they can to help you succeed, he gives you four tries on the homework, and two on the exam, his teaching style is a little quick but I think he does the best job out of all the stats professors at explaining difficult concepts. hes super helpful as well!
Professor Heaton really is the guy to take STAT 121 from. I did not want to take this class but needed it for a GE and he was so reasonable and helpful! The TA lab was also amazing and made it really easy to understand the concepts. Take this class from him!!!
I dropped AP stats in high school because it was taught so poorly. To compare, this was honestly the easiest class I've taken at BYU, yet I learned so much useful basic stats. 15/10 professor. he goes quick, but lets you out of class early almost every time. Homework is straightforward, just have to be in class on analysis days. best professor ever
TAKE STATS FROM HEATON! Professor Heaton is such an amazing professor. I had friends take the same course from other professor, and Heaton was by far the best at teaching the concepts. He really cares about his students. You get multiple tries on the homework and the exam, and he lets you out of class early a lot too.
He is amazing! I was really worried taking this class but there is very little math involved and his lectures and homework is straight-forward and interesting. One thing is that he does go through class very quickly so if you are needing a professor and that goes slower then I wouldn't recommend taking from him. Overall he's a great teacher!!
Super awesome and great teacher. He understands that not everyone wants to be doing Stats, and so he makes it easy for not math people to understand. You get 4 tries on each homework assignment, 2 tries on exams, and the TAs are super helpful.
I love Professor Heaton! I was really nervous about stats, but Heaton makes it so easy to succeed. You get 4 attempts on the homework and get to take 2 different versions of the test if you need. That aside, Heaton's lectures were easy to understand and he really is such a sweet person. Take stats from him, you'll regret it if you don't!
best and easiest GE I've ever taken! Math is my worst enemy but Dr. Heaton taught everything in a way that even my language arts brain could understand. He'll teach quickly but review things when ppl have questions, sometimes does the hw in class! I honestly feel like I learned so much and the open ta lab was SO helpful.
Loved Professor Heaton's class. He made statistics understandable and accessible to everyone. He lectures fairly quickly, so sometimes he'd help with homework in class if he finished early, or even let us out early. Even though it's fast-paced, he slows down when needed. The 4 attempts on homework and 2 on exams were super helpful for me.
This man is a Gem. He is truly a diamond in the rough of horrible byu professors. He sets up his class so that you have as many chances to succeed as possible. He allows 4 chances on every HW. 2 Chances on in-class analysis and Exams. Only one chance for the Mini Projects, but it's all good. PLEASE TAKE THIS CLASS!! He will be your fav professor!
I was dreading taking Stats at Byu, but he made it much more manageable. He created a website that does all of the calculations for you, so it was more understanding of how to use it and how stats work. He was very kind and energetic, and there are always TAs to help you. You get two tries for your tests, and homework multiple. Highly recommend!
Dr. Heaton is the best Professor EVER. If you look at all the past ratings it's obvious that he is one of a kind. I absolutely love his class, he is such a good teacher and easy to understand. He genuinely cares about his students and gives you every chance to get an A. JUST TAKE HIS CLASS YOU'LL LOVE IT.
Dr. Heaton is hands down the best professor I have ever had at BYU. Keep in mind I am a Stats major but I also thought that this was the easiest class I've taken at BYU so far. Dr. Heaton makes his lectures engaging and cracks some good jokes. If you're lucky he'll give you some answers on the tests and do some homeworks during lectures.
Matt is very good at explaining statistics and helping students understand the concepts. The class uses an online calculator to do all the statistical analysis and he walks you through how to use it during class. Tests are open book. You get 4 tries on each homework assignment. You won't regret taking Stats from him.
This guy is an amazing professor. Truly only cares about the students learning and not at all about busy/extraneous work. 348 was a passion project he built and it was probably my favorite class I ever took in the stats department. Take this class and take this professor. Life will be better because of it.
This man would make your life easier so much easier. No Testing Center and multiple attempts to do HWs, Miniprojects, In Class Analysis and most Exams. Good sense of humor and makes the class fun. PLEASE TAKE THIS MAN FOR STATS
I loved Dr. Heaton! I was really nervous about this class but he was a great teacher and really simplified stats for me. You have to take a class from Heaton!
Heaton was great, and his lectures were always interesting. There are a lot of assignments due, but they help you understand the material. Tests were difficult but all on learning suite. You're able to work with classmates on nearly all the work and you draw data from interesting surveys. As far as stats professors go, I highly recommend Heaton.
Please take Heaton. He gives you 4 attempts on homework and 2 attempts on tests. His lectures are entertaining and he is a great teacher. I cannot imagine having a different teacher for this class. No reading and attendance is only mandatory for in class assignments. There are only about 6 of those though.
This class is awesome! There are multiple attempts on basically everything in this class, including exams. Exams are in the learning suite and are open note. There's not really much math, more logic. Prof Heaton is a great lecturer and makes stats a lot more interesting.
You don't need to go to class however it is helpful. He is very easy and lets you redo everything even exams. Exams are opened everything besides people so it's not too hard.
Take stats from Dr. Heaton. Multiple attempts for all assignments, even the exams. He teaches the concepts very clearly, and you use an online app to do the math. Very good pacing. Attendance is not mandatory, but you should go if you want to understand the content. The lectures are good and worth your time. He makes stats interesting.
I never thought I would say this, but STATS was my favorite class this semester! It is set up for you to succeed if you put in the work. You get multiple attempts on almost every assignment and test which helps you learn about what you missed and you can work with friends on most assignments. The TA lab was a lifesaver! Take Professor Heaton! :)
I expected Statistics to be difficult and unengaging. To my pleasant surprise, Matthew Heaton was funny, engaging, and an effective teacher! The assignments were designed in a way to be low-stress but help me master the material. There is a fair amount of homework, but you get multiple attempts on everything. The class ended up being really fun!!
Math has never been my strong suit, but Dr. Heaton knows exactly how to explain statistics in a way that makes sense. If you use the resources given like the TA lab and the multiple attempts then you are guaranteed success in this class. You know he's a good teacher when you actually like going to learn math at 9:00am three times a week.
This class was great! It made me really start to like stats for the first time. He doesn't make it too hard. I felt like I really was able to learn, but he allows so many redos on assignments that it was less stressful. He also understands that stats isn't everyones passion, but he cares about all students and their paths. TAKE STATS 121 FROM HIM!!
Doctor Heaton is the best! He made stats easy to understand, and his lectures were interesting. He gives you multiple tries on the homework, and two tries on exams. Even the daily homework wasn't bad at all. He's hilarious and you can tell he really cares about his students. Stat 121 ended up being my favorite class this semester because of him,
Take stats from Heaton. He is super helpful and great at explaining everything. If you stick around after class, he sometimes does the homework with you, and he also gives out test hints every exam review. There are 4 tries to each homework, and 2 tries for each exam. This class was super manageable and taught me a lot.
He was very sweet and you could tell he loves stats. The subject itself is pretty boring, but I liked listening to him. He made things very clear and set us up well for the homework and tests. He rarely ever took the full 50 mins. If you have to take stats, take it from him
Professor Heaton is such a nice and funny guy! He explains things fairly well, but he can go through lectures too fast sometimes. He let class out early a lot. Homework, in-class analysis, midterms, and final you all get two attempts, except for mini projects. Exams are online and proctored. Make sure to go to the TA lab, it's so helpful!
Get 4 attempts for homework, 2 attempts on tests, 2 review assignments per unit, everything is open note. All Stats 121 have the same exact courseload. But Heaton prepares you more for the test and his lectures make sure you know how to complete everything. Practice tests are easier than actual test, but you can use any assignment to help.
Literally the BEST prof at BYU!! He knows what it's like to be a student and knows we are stressed, depressed, and overwhelmed so he helps out best he can! He makes sure everyone understands and is ready to help any student. Literally the best idk what else to say. He hates pie charts so don't bring them up, but if you do his rant is super funny.
If you have a choice, take stats from Heaton. He is the best.
This class was not a hard class & I am someone who did not pay attention or go most days. Professor Heaton has set up his class so you have multiple attempts to retake each homework assignment & test. which was super nice. the tests are proctored but everything is open note & open internet. if you actually go to class you will get an A easily.
This is the easiest class I've ever taken. I spent almost no time outside of class. He usually finished lectures early, so I did homework in class. He also gives away all his test secrets: how to avoid mistakes, how the questions will try to trick you. He explains the material super well and makes it so easy to succeed in the class.
I don't have enough kind words to say about Professor Heaton. He is very friendly and even showed up to review sessions after class to help students understand the material. I have never met another professor so engaged in students' learning and success. He made statistics understandable and applicable to life.
He was one the best stats teachers I had throughout my stats minor. He is very understanding and explains material better than many teachers! He is encouraging of students struggling with the content and helped me with difficult concepts. 330 and the material is tough but he was very helpful. I would take another class from him.
One of the best professors I've had. Heaton makes stats super accessible and gives students ample opportunities to succeed. The lectures are clear, and he's always available to help. Unstuck study was a lifesaver for preparing for tests.
Super great lectures and always has helpful TAs to help with assignments, just make sure to lock in for the exams to keep and A, a mistake I made the first exam.
LITERALLY THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER, will go over problems in class, AMAZING
Professor Heaton is one of my favorite professor here at BYU. He has the best intentions for his students and wants you to succeed! Material is not very hard and you have lots of time to finish it up in class. TA lab is also helpful for the class if you ever have questions! Overall 10/10 would recommend.
Heaton is incredible! If you have to take stats, take it from him! He gives you four chances on homework assignments and two chances on all exams. His lectures are engaging and fun to listen to. Easy class, but I felt like I truly learned new info and understood the concepts.
I legit had a 89.9% in the class and I asked him to please bump it .1% and he said no :O. The first assignment hurt my grade by 2%. Very difficult class if you don't have a ton of friends in the class to send homework and tests around. I showed up everyday and did every homework but the tests were very hard and long.
Lectures are clear and succinct and divided into good topics. There is a short homework assignment every day that can usually be finished in class after getting a jump start on the code from the lecture slides. This class is way more about the application of models and algorithms than it is about the theory.
This class had interesting subject matter and labs. There are three or four big projects to do either as a group or on your own -- highly recommend doing it with a group! They are quite difficult projects. I would say it's one of the more difficult electives but still recommend taking!
the best way to take stats121 is with Heaton! I'm not a stats person at all, but he gives so many opportunities for you to do well that it's hard not to do well in this class even if you think you're bad at stats/math. Even then, I feel like I learned a lot in his class. He does go through lectures kinda fast tho, so beware if that bothers you.
This has been my favorite class I have taken and Dr Heaton is the best professor to take Stats 121 from. His class was easy and his lectures were very well organized. You can use the material provided by the class on the exam and you can take the exam 2 times. Overall, Dr Heaton is the best professor and I highly recommend taking this class.
Prof Heaton is the best! I've never liked math and I was dreading this class but it was so easy with him! He is the one that created the course, so he's knows everything super well and lectures are fun and engaging! There is an in-class assignment every day so make sure you show up for lectures! He gives many tries for homework and exams!
Dr. Heaton is the absolute best! He's super caring and his lectures are very engaging. He does not give a lot of work and gives 4 different homework options to receive 100% (he keeps the highest). Tests are open notes and are done online.
He makes everything so simple and straightforward for the students! If something doesn't make sense, he will stop everything to make sure it is understood! He is super easygoing, especially when you need some extra assistance for whatever reason. Prof Heaton is great at his job, definitely a top-tier teacher.
Lectures are engaging, he explains things in a way that is easy to understand and also entertaining. Professor Heaton always answers any questions and makes sure everyone understands the content.
Prof Heaton was really great & made Stats way less intimidating than I thought it was from someone not good at math. Organized learning suite, and multiple attempts on all homework and exams too. Does go a bit fast with lectures, but super cool guy and is passionate about what he teaches! Getting a good grade in this class is 100% possible!
I loved Professor Heaton! All the tests are open note, and there are 4 tries on the homeworks. there are participation quizzes in every class, and 3 are dropped. TAKE THE MINI PROJECTS SERIOUSLY! they are a huge part of your grade. the TA lab was extremely helpful and worth the time. If you take the class seriously, you can do really well.
You could tell he genuinely cared about us, our grades, and what was going on in our lives. Attendance is so important and if you miss it can be really confusing. Such an amazing and fun class!
If you take Stats 121 for your major, you HAVE to take it from Heaton. First off, he's one of the nicest guys I've ever taken a class from. Like, just a genuinely nice dude. And then on top of that, his class is incredibly easy. Like, really, really easy. Like, I sometimes forget I'm even taking the class
If you take Stat 121, take it with Dr. Heaton! I hate math but he made the class easy and understandable. He loves his students and would often end lectures early or give out homework and test answers. You can read the textbook if you want but I never did and I still got an A. Can't recommend highly enough! 10/10 Dr. Heaton is awesome!!
Heaton recognizes this is a GenEd few want to take but many have to and doesn't make the class any harder than it needs to be. Computers will do the hard math for you and you just need to know which number to copy/paste. No late work or extra credit, so consistency matters, but super forgiving otherwise. No more than an hour of work per week for me
Professor Heaton is one of the best professors I've had here at BYU. He is super caring, funny, and does his best to make STAT 121 an easy class. Everything is done through an online app/calculator so none of the math is done by hand and you have multiple attempts on the homeworks and exams. It's honestly an easy A. 10/10 recommend.
Professor Heaton is really great at explaining things; even when the material is complex you walk away confident that you understand what you need to. Loved his classes atmosphere
I was so nervous about taking stats since math is not my strong suit. I ended up loving this class and Mr. Heaton. Did I work a little harder than others to maybe receive my grade, yes, but it was totally worth it. IF you put in time to go to TA lab and do homework the class is a breeze.Take it!
Heaton makes going to STAT 121 in the morning a good time, and his class is one of the easiest I've taken at BYU. It's designed for you to learn and get whatever grade you want.
Prof Heaton is awesome. Great lecturer and gave so many opportunities to do homework and work with others in class. All tests were open book and you get two attempts. Wish I could take every class with Prof Heaton.
This is the internship credit class. Make sure that you sign up for the class before the internship starts. All you have to do is turn in a journal entry of what you did at your internship every week. Never actually met or talked to Dr. Heaton, so I can't say anything about him.
Dr. Heaton is the best! Can't say enough good about this guy! His class is so easy and easy and chill. Literally everything from the Homework to the tests is so easy! 100% Would take again!
He taught very well and made the material make sense. He doesn't drag classes out if he finishes teaching the material. Just go to class and you'll get an easy A.
If you have to take STAT 121 take it from Dr Heaton. He makes the course easy and gives you so many resources. HE loves his job and it shows in his teaching style.
Heaton is the GOAT!! He makes stats simple. His lectures are engaging and straightforward. His exams are exactly what he prepares you for, and if you go to class, do the homework, and take practice tests, you are set. Stats can be intimidating, but I promise with Heaton, you've got it!
He looks like Jimmy Olsen from the back of the lecture hall. He teaches clearly and cares about his students. The class was easy, and he made it fun!
I thought there was no way he could live up to all his positive reviews but he totally did. If you have the option to take this professor please do, you won't regret it, he's the GOAT!! Really cares about all his students even in a large class and wants the best for all of us.
Doing STAT 121? Take Prof. Heaton!! I took this class with a couple friends, and it was one of the most enjoyable classes I have ever taken. We could work together on all in class assignments and the homework/exams were intuitive. He cracks jokes, and skips the math that calculators will do for you.
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Professor Heaton's class this recent semester. He is a WONDERFUL teacher! All the content is taught through lectures, and he does a great job of explaining everything. If you pay attention in class and make friends with the people around you (there are a few group assignments), you will do great!
He was super merciful, we always had multiple chances (2-3) for homework assignments, midterms, and the final, and it was open notes. He always had a good attitude and a smile, and sometimes would let us go early. Easy class but I still learned a lot! He almost convinced me to get a minor in Stats. There are some in-class assignments, so be aware.
Literally the best class ever
Prof. Heaton was great! Throughout literally the whole class we said he'd be getting a great RMP, so here I am :) He was an awesome teacher. Super clear and for a subject that gets a bad wrap, he was an entertaining lecturer. Every homework gets three tries, every exam gets 2. You can work with other people too. Impossible to not end with an A!
