He's a good professor and he helps during office hours, but his lectures are sometimes disorganized and hard to follow and write down.
He's an enthusiastic, passionate teacher, but his lectures err on the boring side and are rather disorganized. The outlines on his powerpoint slides are extremely vague and do not help at all. I recommend strongly that students attend office hours, where you can probably get your questions clarified.
Herbsty! He brings his puppy (ok giant dog) to class which is always exciting...Herbst really knows his stuff though but does at times go a bit fast for easy note-taking. But his midterms are fairly straight-forwards..just defining main terms and doing some quotes and short essays..all stuff he stressed in class. He's a cool dude..take him..yay
yeah...this guy is really cool! my BEST mmw prof so far! his lectures are organized and well put together. plus, if you cant get down all the notes, hes always happy to see people come to his office hours. a REALLY nice guy with a good sense of humor! his exams are SO fair. make yourself known to him. hes a cool guy to get to know.
This guy was great. Not only did he bring his dog with him, but his lectures were very well put together, and Herbst did a superb job at explaining the material. Workload was a bit heavy, but that's to be expected with MMW. Tests were very fair. Out of the MMW profs, Herbst is by far the best...take him!!!
I LOVE HERBST. He's a great lecturer and his exams are easy. There's a lot of reading, but it's not necessarily mandatory. If you know the material well, you can make an educated guess about the quotes that he uses on exams. He's straightforward and doesn't try to trick you in any way. He's nice and helpful and obviously loves to teach. Take him!
He knows so much about all the topics of MMW4. Lectures are easy to follow. Toby, his dog, is also fun to look at if you get bored.
Very charismatic. He and Chamberlain are my favorite MMW professors. Very organized, speaks clearly, friendly, professional, funny, easygoing, and fair. And I loved his dog too! :)
He is an awesome professor. He is an excellent lecturer and keeps everyone interested in the material. His lectures go fast so be prepared to take notes quickly!
Great Prof! He is the coordinator of the MMW department and certainly enjoys what he does. He is a cogent and enthusiastic speaker, which is complemented with his powerpoint presentations.
He is a fantastic lecturer and teacher and his dog is awesome. he goes over a lot of material and you'll have a lot of notes, but his tests are extremely fair. He responds to emails in a courteous manner and listens to students and their concerns. This was the first MMW class I ever recommended to anyone.
Herbst is a great lecturer and is always willing to go back and clarify anything from previous lectures. He assigns a lot of reading, but if you go to lecture he goes over the main points. Grading depends on your TA. Check his MMW website for clarifications on material, he posts regularly. Testing is very fair.
As a teacher, he's great. His comical interpretations of the material hold your interest. The stuff you learn is interesting, but hard to get through all that boring history. He uses lots of slides, podcasts, answers questions, and tests on the reading material as well as what he goes over in class.
Clear and entertaining teacher. Easy to follow lectures with interesting content... makes MMW dare I say it, enjoyable!
Who doesn't love Herbst? Midterm and final can be hard if you don't know what to expect, but he will tell you exactly what's on them. Cute kid. This is a good prof. Lots of reading, not all necessary. Answers questions promptly and fully. Lectures hold attention, at times a little out of order chonologically. GO TO THEM! Hard to make up.
yay herbst! audible, clear, did not need powerpoints (they are unecessary listen to him instead of looking at them). he knows his****!
Lots of material in this class. All together this class required most of my time. The exams are rather hard, because if you do not mention one smallest thing, you will lose points. Nees to do all the reading, because of the quote identification on the tests. He gives no study guides:(The professor himself is very interesting and smart..
He is an AMAZING lecturer. Very interesting and clear. I think the tests are pretty reasonable...you can normally tell what quotes will be on the test. You can tell he really likes teaching...
Herbst is a great professor in every aspect. Lectures are always interesting. Lecures are a must, the notes from lectures get you an A on exams. He gives a lot of reading, but it is do-able becuase you dont need to read from the MMW textbook because he discusses everything from the text in lecture, just read the course reader and you will do fine.
awesome professor! very helpful when you talk to him. a lot of work/reading is the downside.
Long boring lectures with way too much material. The midterm and final multiple choice were very obscure so you have to do a lot of studying to do well. The short answer and essay portion are overall pretty fair though. Way too much reading that is neccesary to do well. If you,re interested in MMW,take him. If you want an easy A, take someone else.
Ahh! I think it's so hard to rate Herbst because he is an OUTSTANDING lecturer, very clear. However, his tests are insanely difficult. His powerpoint also was not in any way useful. I was less confused not looking at it. I would never take him again.
My favorite MMW Prof by far. He makes it interesting and his tests are very straight forward. As usual with MMW you have to get a good TA if you're worried about grading. But as a prof I would highly recommend him.
Extremely helpful. Very approachable and a great lecturer.
Not as good as i thought he would be. Fairly good I guess. Boring sometimes and disappointments on the final exams. I wouldn't take him again. Unprofessional when he brings his children and teaches with them on him hip.
He does require you to known a lot! His slides are a bit disorganized, fulled with info, and lectures were sometimes boring. Although he does try to keep students attention with jokes. Overall I thought the class was easy.
Herbst was the best history professor I have ever taken at UCSD. While he designed his lectures after the assigned readings, you must go to class since he does not post his lecture slides. He was nice enough to ask us what kind of questions we wanted to see on the final exam. Overall, only take Herbst if you are willing to work for the A.
I would definitely recommend this professor! I usually fall asleep in mmw classes but I've never once came close to falling asleep in any of his lectures. He's interesting and very friendly if you ever have any questions. Just go to lecture and you'll do fine on his test.
Come on, who doesn't love Herbst? He is a wonderful, smart, outstanding professor I would say. He is very very helpful in the office hour. He is very friendly. You won't be disappointing to get to know him. Take him. He is the best MMW professor I have ever had, by far!
Herbst is really funny and does awesome, clear, understandable power points, also Pod Casts. My first MMW class at UCSD and he made it bearable. As for help, only went to TA never dealt with him directly. Midterm was fairly easy and so was paper.
Herbst is an awesome mmw professor. He made going to mmw pretty fun cause he cracks jokes every lecture. I recommend you take him.
Herbst is a decent professor; answers questions, holds review sessions, and highlights important points that will be on the major tests. He is enthusiastic about MMW (sometimes annoyingly so) and makes MMW4 tolerable, which is quite a feat. I would recomend taking him for mmw4.
Easy. Had him for MMW3 and MMW4. If you take notes on your laptop, you WILL get at least a B+. His tests are much easier than they used to be. Just atke notes on your laptop and read them off right before the midterm and you'll be fine.
Good in lecture. Clear explanations and very energetic. He is ridiculously different in office hours as he is borderline rude . Doesn't really explain what he was looking for on exams. Just briefly answers your questions and does not go out of his way to help you. Way better MMW professors out there.
Herbst is a great professor. His lectures are interesting and he speaks very clearly. He also provides helpful powerpoints that make it easier to take notes during lecture. You usually end up studying almost everything (tons) for his exams, but they're representative of the main themes of the course. Primary source readings are def. necessary.
The readings assigned for this course are absolutely horrendous. The 2 textbooks are fine, but good luck NOT falling asleep while reading the dry and incomprehensible 50 page PDF files he assigns. A history course about Byzantium has such potential to be fascinating and interesting, but Herbst just makes it a course of names, dates, and battles.
One of the most interesting classes Ive taken...when it comes to lecture...everything else is horrible...tests were extremely difficult and it was almost impossible to get an A....TA graded really hard....but Prof. Herbst really held my attention during lecture...Id say take this class pass fail and enjoy it.
Just do the readings, write notes from the readings, tie them with his main themes, Presto easy A. You might get a bad grade on the first one, don't freak out I did, but I ended up doing well from then on. Class itself is interesting, he's one of the best history professors at UCSD, makes Byz Emp. Epic.
I took him Winter 09 on a whim, and I have to say that he's the best professor I have ever had, and made Byzantine History the best class I have ever taken. I'm not even a history major or anything close. Every single lecture held my attention, and the tests were all very fair. There is a great deal of reading, but it was all worth it to take him.
Herbst is a very intriguing lecturer who keeps your interest in the class. Its funny because you'll notice that he uses his hands a LOT when he talks. He sometimes goes on related tangents, but his interest for the class is somewhat contagious. Herbst is a great professor and I would highly recommend him, Chang is a notch above him, however :P
I took HIEU 104 in Winter 2009, with really no prior exposure to the Byzantine Empire. Herbst was absolutely wonderful. There was a ton of reading, but if you actually do it, pay attention, and take decent notes, you'll do well. He's extremely helpful and VERY into the subject. My favorite History class at UCSD (and I'm a History major).
Best professor at UCSD bar none. He is completely fascinating, obviously cares about his students, and engaged in the material. I have taken him 3 straight quarter and love it. Go to class, do the reading, review for the tests. Easy A that way.
If you keep up the work you're rewarded with a fascinating insight of the world utilizing new perspectives to see them from. Herbst is one of those charismatic professors you wish all professors are like! He's eloquent with his words but don't let that fool you- his exams are throughly rigorous and sometimes comprehensive! Nonetheless- EXCELLENT!!
Herbst-Hard but fair, and it shouldn't be any other way! Took Herbst for a seminar class and I wasn't disappointed. While it wasn't entirely difficult the course demands the utmost in diligence to the material and time. Be ready to be in the spotlight but it was a terrific and rewarding experience!
I had Herbst as my professor for the MMW 4 Global Seminar in Istanbul. He is by far the best UCSD professor I have had so through my first year. He is an engaging professor in class and is very engaging out of class BUT you must make the step to talk to him. This was made easier in the Global Seminar since it was an 18 student class with just him.
He is the best professor ever! Keeps the class interesting and fun. I actually look forward to his lectures sometimes (i know dorky) just because of how charismatic he is. Very helpful teacher take him if you can!
Pref. Herbst is an AMAZING lecturer. He keeps his students engaged and really knows his information. He's very passionate about what he teaches and is very approachable. His lectures are very important, more than the readings. If you plan on sleeping in class, don't go and do podcast instead. He sometimes tests on the images, so study them!
Great lecturer, fairly easy midterm and finals.
I never thought History could be so interesting. I actually looked forward to his lecture. It was always insightful. His power points kept the lecture organized. Doesn't have podcast or post the slides online so GO TO CLASS! or else you won't know what the hell is going on. Does provide a study guide for the midterm and final. I Recommend him!
Wonderful professor!!!
Best MMW professor I've had so far. He speaks really fast (compared to Chang) but his lectures are very entertaining. Take notes on your laptop to keep up. Don't come late to class or fall out of your chair, 'cause he'll call you out, son.
People make a really big deal out of Prof. Herbst. I don't think he is all that great. It is an easy class but he makes it necessary to go to lecture by refusing to podcast or post lecture slides. Overall, it was an okay experience. Herbst just didn't really live up to all the hype.
The essay part of his exams are easy and it's clear what they're going to cover, but he picks the most obscure ID terms and picture IDs. He's charismatic and likable, and thus the high ratings, but in terms of teaching, go for Chang if you actually want to learn a lot (more organized + clear).
MOST AMAZING PROFESSOR AT USCD! He has a way of lecturing that MAKES you want to listen. He isn't just a talking head in front of a podium-he TEACHES. He makes history come alive and makes it relevant by comparing it to matters taking place in our lives today. And his knowledge makes him SO attractive. MMW + Herbst = GREATNESS!!!!
Best MMW Porf. so far. He is super nice and his lectures are not boring, he'll try to be funny through the lecture which keeps students interested in what he's saying, He's very willing to help you when needed. He's tests are based pretty much on his lectures. He doesn't Podcast, but it's worth going to lecture. I would recommend him 100%
Best MMW professor, yet! Tests were hard as hell if you didn't actually learn and study the content of the course. Tests were all essay format (no multiple choice). Started class late and end late most of the time.
Herbst is a pretty decent professor in that he's a clear lecturer. I feel that his concepts actually do connect pretty well. One bad thing about this class, however, is that his review sessions are entirely useless. He'll just sit there and barely answer any questions. Not only that, but his midterm/final are pretty hard.
BEST MMW Professor. Lectures are clear and well organized. Tests are easy to study for, just review lectures and reading. Sometimes he puts 'notes' on the website which are basically the test. just go to class and do the readings and you'll do fine.
Amazing professor... Super helpful and is willing to go out of the way.
Very clear and engaging lecturer. Tests are fair and it's extremely helpful to do the readings. He's a very nice man who enjoys what he does and does it well. Highly recommended.
Herbst's tests are pretty easy and fair, really depends on your TA. READINGS are too important. Pretty easy, take him if you can.
Herbst is one of the better MMW teachers. His lectures are very engaging and he keeps everyone awake and focused. Coming to class in enjoyable. Test are usually connecting points to the main theme. Beware though that grading varies from TA to TA, so while you earned a B, your friend who knows less might have gotten an A-.
I love his lectures. I'm the type to fall asleep during class and I never did during his class. Learned so much...I seriously love this guy. I don't even like history, and he made me enjoy it. Dr. Herbst, I got nothing but good things to say about you. <3 btw, I hardly did the reading, just go to class.
The professor himself really teaches well. He teaches history like one giant, intertwined story and you will remember things from this class. His test questions are very fair. In terms of grades, it really depends on the difficulty and expectations of your T.A.
Herbst is a great lecturer. He keeps you interested and answers questions. The i-Clicker quizzes motivate you to do the reading and are pretty easy (sometimes purely common sense). Before the midterm, he gives you a list of the exact questions he will ask so you can study them and be prepared. I thought I'd suffer in MMW but it's my easiest class.
Professor Herbst made MMW exciting! He has high expectations (in a good way). The class is reasonably challenging, and he presents content in a way that is clear and engaging. His lecture style facilitates note-taking and makes it easy to review. It is pretty clear what will be important for exams. Tests are very fair. Best MMW professor I've had!
I really enjoyed his lectures and always looked forward in going to them. Lectures are interesting and always grab your attention. iClicker questions are usually not hard. I definitely hope to be able to take him again in the future.
One of the BEST professors I have ever had. He keeps you engaged, interested, and has so much passion I love him.
Herbst is probably the best professor I have ever had, and will ever have. He has so much passion for what he teaches, and that's what makes it so great to hear him lecture. He's also an amazing person. He took a group of us to Istanbul to do service with disabled people, and I knew then he is one of the greatest persons I will ever meet.
Herbst is a good professor, but his reading assignments are too much. I usually spend 5 hours a day to do well in the reading. And the midterms are challenging too. Average in the class is B- or C.
Herbst is an amazing professor but you will have to work for the A! The online readings are a must, focuses on religion/philosophies a lot.
Why don't you teach 13? Great, enthusiastic professor with podcast! Only downside is i-clickers on the readings, which are very long but just get the main idea of it and your good to go. Essay grades depend on your TA so just go to their OH. Exams are very straight forward. Take him if you can!
Professor Herbst is one of the greatest professors at UCSD. He makes lecture interesting and fun. Do the readings and you'll do well with I-Clickers and on the exams.
Herbst is amazing for MMW 11. People complain about the amount of readings, but they are really helpful and interesting. Has clicker questions in class, but they only ask about the basics of the assigned readings. Tests are easy if you study the broader themes and cite readings. Would recommend!
I've taken 2-3 classes with Professor Herbst. He is both challenging and inspirational. After taking his classes you may realize his classes aren't "hard" and what you need most is the motivation to learn, which takes effort. The keys are motivation to learn and effort because his lectures are masterful all on their own. Best prof. I've had yet.
He is really a great professor. His lecture is very clear, interesting, and highly related to the assigned reading. If you want to make MMW study have more fun, he is the best choice. TA is very important because your test will be like a small paper(due to many small paragraphs and few multiple choice) and your TA is the one who will grade it.
I only took Prof Herbst for a seminar class but he's a wonderful lecturer!! I've heard he gives very long readings for MMW. For this class, however, readings are not really necessary. I only spent maybe half an hour to an hour writing journals for this class. It didn't take up very much of my time but it was very informational. I would recommend it
Good lecturer. But it's sad that I did not know my grade the entire quarter until the end.
Herbst is an awesome professor! The readings were quite long, which took me a lot of time every day, for I also took notes while reading. Those readings are helpful and informative, and I really learned a lot! His lectures were clear and interesting, and the tests were not easy, but if you do the readings and review them thoroughly you'll be fine.
I hated this class because he was the toughest professor among MMW11 professors, but when it was time for final, I knew more history than a history major. Listening to his podcasts really help. Go to his lectures, because there are a lot of iclicker questions, and they worth 20 percent of your grade. Also, read the materials he assign.
Prof Herbst is an amazing lecturer. Readings are very essential to the clicker questions (which are worth a decent amount of your grade). Midterms and the Final aren't too bad as long as you have an easier TA.
Tons of readings, which are necessary for lectures and exams. His lectures are pretty interesting.
Pretty easy but clicker questions on readings were the difference from an A to a B
Compared to all of the other mmw's, Herbst was the hardest mmw 11 teacher. Try to avoid him if you can. If not, get ready for 100-ish pages of reading a week, tests sans study guides, clicker questions in every lecture (and they aren't easy either), 1 extra credit opportunity (other classes had multiple) and writing assignments for section.
Herbst is a really good guy. His lectures and expectations of you are very clearly laid out. I recommend attending every lecture because he heavily emphasizes the readings, which he tests you on. Avoid spending too much time on readings he talks about for 10 mins. He is really personable and his exams are really fair. Take his class.
An inspirational professor whom I feel is the only one who had really influenced the way I think since coming to UCSD. Lots of readings but he goes over them in lectures and his lectures are amazing! 2 midterms and 1 final which are all structured similarly. No surprises on the exams.
Professor Herbst paints a picture with his lectures. He tells stories and suddenly you're actually interested in history. His tests are definitely fair but they do require you to remember small details. He stresses academic integrity and gives lots of clicker questions. There is a lot of reading.
AMAZING LECTURER!! A lot of readings for hw and clicker questions, but his lectures are worth it. They keep you engaged and he actually explains the material really well. taking him again for mmw 12 and would take him for the rest of the series.
2 unit course, he was funnny and it was easy
Professor Herbst is a great lecturer. He is very funny and easy to listen to and cracks jokes, but there is a lot of reading. If you just stay on top of the readings and listen during lecutre you should be fine.
There is podcast for the lecture but he also has clicker questions in class. No study guides for exams, but he will open a discussion board on the Ted and let students post questions up there. He will look over these questions and make tests base on them. Lots of readings and since there is no study guide, you need to read them all before tests.
Although mmw is not the most fun, herbst is so engaging and actually makes you want to go to lecture. Lots of reading and final was relatively hard but I would 100% reccomend and if you pay attention, youll pass
Though the class relies heavily on your TA, this review is for Herbst. Herbst is amazing. Animated lecture style with a podcast as well and really cares about students and learning and people in general. Would highly recommend.
Herbst's lectures are engaging and if you ever miss anything during class he also has it podcasted so you don't have to worry but going to lecture is necessary since he does clicker questions. The class is reading heavy but as long as you do that and go to class, you should be fine. Everyone should take at least one of his classes.
Herbst is so passionate and clearly loves teaching that it's easy to be interested. His class may seem a bit hard but as long as you do the readings and attend his lectures you'll be fine, there are clicker questions. Tests are comprehensive, so he expects you to truly understand the material. Had him for MMW 11 and 12, learned a lot, no regrets.
If you care about your grades, don't take him. If you care about learning, then do. The grading is almost entirely contingent upon your TA, so let's just hope you're lucky.
Best prof ever! His lectures are very clear & he makes the significance of what he talks about very clear. If you don't understand what he's talking about, DONT WORRY, he provides podcasts. His lectures are super intriguing, best lecturer I've taken BY FAR. Take this man, he's a genius. *plus* he brings his dog to class sometimes
Prof Herbst is passionate about the topics, which makes lecture interesting. But the class is unfortunately very literature heavy. Expect to read A LOT. The exams are all free write too and graded reaallyy tough. The questions are vague, yet if your answer isn't specific enough you lose a lot of points. I enjoyed this class, but it ruined my GPA :(
A+ prof. He's very passionate about MMW and his lectures are actually pretty intriguing. I hate history but he made it a little better. He does give out a lot to read but it's your choice to do it or not. His tests are very reflective of his lectures, which I appreciate. Clicker questions are fine too.
he's great. everyone loves him. gives awesome lectures and really knows his stuff
Lots to read everyday, but lectures are equally interesting. Would definitely recommend taking Professor Herbst.
Amazing! He will make you think that choosing MMW is a great choice. He makes the class interesting that actually makes you want to go. He is very knowledgable and insipres you to think critically. My friend even said "I don't know how my following MMW prof can live up to him". However, he does have lots and lots of readings and no study guide.
Amazing lecturer. Shows he truly cares about the class and the students. Received a B but that's only because I forgot to do a bunch of stuff and it impacted my grade negatively. If you do the reading (which is moderate but not super much), pay attention to his lectures, and participate in section you'll probably get an A.
Awesome. iClicker counts for 15% of the final grade which will be easy if you do the reading. DO STUDY GUIDE from the professor; your TA may make one for you (at least my TA did and was really helpful). Not an esay A but can get.
Herbst is literally the best in the mmw sequence and you definitely have to take him at least once! brings his dog to class, and gives amazing lectures. you have to read because of clicker questions but its doable. His tests are entirely free response but it makes it easier to get points :) Overall he's super memorable as a professor and I miss him
Prof. Herbst is a fantastic professor, but MMW is a challenging class. No study guides, FRQs only, and beware of clicker questions. Other than that, he is a great guy, very kind, and very passionate.
Great teacher. The class I took was online and attendance was not taken. He recorded his lectures so you can view them at your own pass. Participation and understanding is graded through class discussion posts which are weekly.
ENVR 87 is a fun freshman seminar, definitely recommend it to any freshman who has an interest for the environment. Readings are cool, Prof. Herbst is fun and enthusiastic; overall a light, interesting course to take.
I took the remote version of his class, and it was very boring. The class was fair overall, but it was hard to pay attention to his lecture videos. Of course, it always depends on your TA, but the weekly videos that he posted were not always engaging. There are not many assignments in this class, but papers are worth a lot of your grade.
Took him for MMW 11 online and was super easy. Your grade basically is dependent upon your TA but Herbst's lectures were always a joy to watch. Class was super straightforward and for MMW, was surprisingly enjoyable!
Took Prof. Herbst's MMW11 class and it was a great experience. The lectures were engaging, and the reading load was manageable. Used Unstuck ai alongside the textbook to prep for exams, and it really helped.
Lectures somewhat all over the place
Professor Herbst is a solid lecturer, he includes funny and interesting historical anecdotes and brought his dog into lecture almost everyday! MMW12 is rough in general, but Herbst isn't too bad. The reading is heavy and there's 2 essays as well as a midterm and final. The exams consisted of image and passage identification, plus a written essay
Goated professor, amazing speaker. Never once was I bored in his class.
Where do I begin? Like at first I never heard what he's teaching is like, but after taking his class, I'm so happy me and my friends took the risk of taking his class. The passion he evokes in every lecture is really amazing. Not only that, but I love it that he has a great sense of humor and that he brings his dog to every lecture.
I absolutely loved MMW 12 with Herbst! He is so funny and lectures were incredibly engaging. The midterm and final were mostly passage IDs from the readings, but he chose relatively easy ones and we were allowed an index card cheat sheet. There were iclicker questions in class, so attendance is important. Overall my favorite MMW experience so far.
Great professor, makes dull content very interesting
Seriously such a funny and engaging guy. I and almost everyone I knew in that class was wildly entertained after every lecture. Very fun class! My only complaint is that his slides are very hard to follow (often a hard-to-read text in a wild color over a random photo/map in a random spot) and don't add much to what he's saying.
The professor is amazing. His lectures are very engaging and you also get to meet his dog :) . Your grade fully depends on your TA. I got one who was a tough grader so I had to work alot to even get an A-, however I know students who get very generous TAs. The class can get challenging with all the readings and papers but its doable.
Lectures are just 100% aura and hype moment, but it really make it fun to be there. You can feel the enthusiasm that he has for this class. Grade HEAVILY dependent on TA, so hope you get a fair one! Furthermore, he doesn't really post a study guide or a detailed overview of what he expects you to do on the test, so you kind of have to wing it.
Herbst is a great lecturer don't get me wrong but his tests are so hard to study for. He basically picks a quote from any reading that you have to analyze but he gives you like 30 readings before each test. Chang gives his students study guides and has lecture slides. Personally i need a more direct teacher not one that just goes into stories.
Very dynamic speaker. Jumps around the timeline and ideas often, making the history harder to follow, and to gain the depth of knowledge necessary to get a full understanding of the subject. Minimal work outside of class besides the assigned readings. However, your grade is determined on the 4 tests you take during the quarter and one short essay.
Entertaining, knowledgeable, but slightly disorganized lecturer. Grade is mainly based on TA. Keep track of primary sources for the exams, which are essay format. Go to TA office hours to understand your mistakes and go to lecture to receive IClicker points (completion not accuracy). Discussion was mandatory and 15% of the final grade.
My absolutely goated MMW professor (his TAs were super nice as well). Taught the most engaging classes I've been in since I've taken any history classes since high school & really helped us retain content. Even if you missed some classes you could have cram-studied and cooked on the final. GOAT GOAT GOAT will be taking him from 11 to 15 🫰
Discussion and Iclicker are a lot of points so you have to go to both. Only tests are in the gradebook but they are super easy to cram for, just go to office hours and he gives a lot of hints for what sources will be on it. You don't have to read if you go to lecture since he covers everything you need to know for the test. Pretty engaging lecturer
Engaging and knowledgeable professor, lectures were informational and easy to understand. Grade is based heavily on TA. Discussion is mandatory, lecture is essentially mandatory as clicker is 15 percent of grade. Rest of grade is based on content analysis + essay.
Herbst lectures like he was there and personally affected by each event. However, I stopped paying attention to lectures or doing the readings around week 6 and just crammed the night before each content analysis. Grading just depends on ur TA shout out to Baris.
