Seems like a nice guy, funny when he wants to be, plus he curved the grades on our first exam!
Awesome teacher, not too hard, but if you had the desire to learn you could learn a lot.
The class is awesome. He's funny and interested in the topics he talks about. You can tell he knows alot about it and if you want to learn you definately can. The tests aren't bad if you actually show up to class.
Funny, gives good study guides, shows interesting films. Definitely recommended!
Pretty funny teacher, doesn't require knowledge of dates, only chronology
I took his US History class at Georgia State. Awesome teacher. Funny. Really knows his stuff when it comes to history. Doesn't care about attendence. Take notes and you should be fine. His test aren't too hard and he gives study guides and an extra credit opportunity before each test. No research papers or essays. Test are all multiple choice.
I agree with the comments posted in the review below, but would add that he does require a written review of an assigned book in his classes at Tech. It's not a difficult assignment though, and he even lets you submit a rough draft and get his feedback on it if you turn it in early enough.
He is an awesome professor, he is pretty funny and he really knows his stuff when it comes to history. Text book was helpful for studying, but if you take good notes and pay attention you will be fine. His tests weren't too difficult either.
he's a nice guy but you cant really hear him well when he talks because he mumbles, his lecture isn't that informative. he gives you terms for the test before it, but when the test comes around there are a good amount of questions you needed to have read the book for. some questions he didn't talk about so the tests were kind of hard.
Yes, as the poster below noted, you do have to read the book to do well in class, but I never have any problems following his lectures. He writes all the important stuff on the board during his lectures anyway. And he was very helpful when I went to his office with the study guide before the exam--he spent over half an hour helping me review.
His lectures are pretty straightforward, if you go to class and take notes and read the textbook then the exams are pretty easy.
I love Hild! He re-uses 2/3's of the questions on his tests so if you study from past tests, as well as any additional study guide, you'll be good to go. He offers 5 points extra credit on each test simply for writing a movie review. I've also been to his office hours where he has been extremely helpful. Take his class!
The best thing about his class is that you don't have to go! He gives you a list of terms to memorize before the test and tests you only on that. Also gives you 5% for writing a movie review before each test. I went for 10 classes the whole semester and made an A. Tests were sometimes tricky though. Needed to answer tricky questions to get an A.
Yes bro, yes.
This man is awesome. He teaches history with a sense of humor. His test are extremely easy and you can get an A on them by just taking notes. He gives 5 points of extra credit on test for writing a paper on a movie viewed the day before the test. Read Georgia Odyssey and ABSORB it. It's interesting and some questions on the exam are from the book.
Super easy! Great teacher! Class was really boring, but it was an easy A, for sure! I'm terrible in History, but I got an A! Georgia Odyssey is a MUST READ to do excellent on his tests! Also, the extra credit paper definitely helps and takes a total of 5 minutes!
The class is providing me a wealth of knowledge about my heritage. I laughed, and got intellectually sweet on him, when I got into the foreword of his book and read "regionally unique undemocratic character" to describe the state of southern politics in the late 19th c. If you're a Georgia native, check him out. I'm loving it.
Really easy class to get an A in. Not too interesting, and he kinda drones on sometimes, but its so easy. Just write a 600 word extra credit paper about some movie prior to each test for 5 extra points. And read Georgia Odyssey for 3 or so questions per test.
Attendance is not mandatory which is good. His lecture is extremely boring and hard to hear if you sit in the back. He requires you to buy one textbook and one novel like book called Georgia Ody. DO NOT buy the textbook, just buy GA odys and make sure to completely read it. His tests are reasonable, study key terms and memorize GA Ody.
I enjoyed HIST 2112 with Hild. He joked in lecture and made US history as interesting as could be. Exams are fair, containing about 80% power point material, 10% textbook material and 10% Georgia Odyssey questions. The Georgia Odyssey was open book and should be an easy 100.
This class is not as easy as it is made out to be. A lot of the test questions are tricky. There are only 50 per test too, so it is pretty hard to get an A. The Georgia Odyssey paper is also graded somewhat stringently. I finished with a B. For each test, he does give a study guide and a 5 point extra credit paper. He has a good sense of humor too.
This is an amazing teacher. I took him over the summer for my U.S. Perspective requirement and he used power points and videos to teach history. Lecture were extremely helpful but students who skipped class and read the book could still make As on his test. I got an 97, 103, and a 84 in the final and I left the class with a 94. Easy if you read.
I took him over the summer and LOVED HIM!!! He's adorably quirky and funny, and I really enjoyed his lectures. He is really passionate about history and gets into telling stories about stuff (sometimes related/unrelated to the curriculum). Over summer we just had 3 tests, all very simple and straight from either the book or lecture.
Dr. Hild, while endearingly awkward, was an amazing lecturer with a real knowledge of history. He truly loved what he taught and tried so hard to make students see the same way. While lecture isn't necessary b/c he posts them online, it's worth going if only b/c I felt guilty not to due to the effort he put into them.
Hild is a great teacher. I enjoyed going to his class even though history can be boring. Pay attention in class, do the study guide, and extra credit papers and you will get an A. The textbook isn't bad, but I didn't use it after the first test.
Hild is an incredible History professor who obviously knows his stuff. He gives a study guide before each test and the tests are pretty much identical to the study guides. You don't have to come to class, just come for the extra credit movie review, and the study guide and you'll do fine. DO NOT buy the biography book, use SparkNotes instead.
Go to lectures so you don't have to read the textbook, and do the study guide and extra credit papers. Easy A if you take decent notes
Professor Hild is one of the best professors I've had so far. He is passionate about what he is teaching, gives students all the material they need to be successful, and offers opportunities for extra credit. Take his class!
Hild's a really nice guy and a great professor. He's not the intimidating professor that first year students might expect. If you read (time consuminng), pay attention in class, and do the study guides you should make a high A with no problems. He also shows a documentary and if you write a short essay you get 5 extra credit points on your test.
Solid pick for a social science/GA History requirement. Test were easy. Did not use textbook. Showed up to a third of the classes. Half of the final exam was open book. Made a comfortable A in the class. Keep in mind that his short summer classes are easier than fall/spring since the summer exams are multiple choice.
Dr. Hild is great! He can be monotone a lot, but he is extremely clear. You will always know what will be on the test if you pay attention and at least skim the textbook (just read what he doesn't cover) and you'll be set. Also, he makes jokes, but if you zone out you miss them (trust me, they're good)
I had Hild during the summer semester as a summer freshman, and his lecture was overall boring. It's hard to focus when 1, it's content you've already known and 2, he tends to go off on a tangent. His spiels do relate to the content, but they tend to get boring very quickly. He does have easy extra credit opportunities though. It's not a hard class
Had Hild over the summer and never really showed up for lectures. I would recommend going to the lectures before the tests. I would fill out the study guide he gives and memorize everything on it. If you do that, you'll get an A on the test. The final was the least stressful thing I have ever done at Tech. I loved Prof. Hild.
Took him for a five-week New South class in the summer. There were two books but you only had to read one. If you read that one and come to class it is not a difficult A.
Pretty easy to follow, funny at times, made U.S. History enjoyable.
This class was easy and most of the tests you could figure out if you've lived in America for ten + years. He was pretty dreadfully boring sometimes, but overall his tests were easy enough that you could prepare for them in a few hours the night before and make close to a perfect score.
love professor hild!!! nice guy, clear lectures (monotone voice tho, be careful not to zone out), some funny jokes. just take good notes in lecture + if u miss one fill in the gaps w/ notes from textbook + study the night before the test easy a. fully multiple choice, gives decent study guides, doesn't take attendance, lots of extra credit.
I wasn't looking forward to taking this class, but Prof. Hild made it pretty interesting. Only 4 exams, but he offers extra credit too.
Professor Hild is such a good professor. Although the course is entirely exam based, he always provides study guides that follow the exam exactly, and as long as you show up to lecture or read the textbook, you'll do fine. His class is very easy as long as you've had some exposure to American history in the past.
Professor Hild is the man. I took this class during a 5 week period and loved the class. We had 3 tests and he gave us a study guide for each test (test study guides). I studied a few days in advance, went out the night before and made high 90s on every test. I didnt read the text book but read another required book. Loved this class
He is knowledgeable but doesnt know how to pass down his knowledge also doesnt give assignments which means your grade fully depends on the exams, which is just wrong. I would definitely recommend not to take his class if you arent good in history
I took him for History of the New South in the summer in a 5-week course. There was fair amount of reading, but the class was interesting, and he showed some good documentaries. If you do the reading, come to class, and follow his study guides closely, you should be able to get an A.
Professor Hild is nice. He gives students a lot of extra credits. However, it is hard for me to understand his accent
Take this class to boost your GPA. Tests are super easy and he gives study guides. Go to lecture the week before a test because he will show an extra credit documentary. What a guy.
I took this class in the 5 week Ignite program. I was disappointed that Professor Hild did not conduct real lectures... I had to learn mainly from the textbook and his powerpoints. Your entire grade depends on 3 exams, but the study guides he gives are VERY HELPFUL. Additionally, there is extra credit before each exam. Easy social science credit!
Professor Matthew is very caring with his students. During the course, I had a problem to acquire one of the required books and he promptly gave me choices on how to solve the issue! He is a solid choice for History 2111.
This was a very easy class! The textbook he provided was quite funny and an easy read. There are 4 exams, and they're very objective so it wasn't difficult. The exams were also MC so it made it easier. There are no classes to attend, but if you do have any questions, you can reach him through email or the chat tab within canvas.
Dr. Hild was a great professor. His class is very straight forward and easy. He makes it clear what you will need to study for the exams. This class doesn't require a ton of work, just a general level of knowledge about history. Dr. Hild also is very knowledge able and even teaches some cool facts about GT history and the Atlanta area. 10/10 class
Dr. Hild is a great professor! The course has 4 exams and all are super straightforward. I highly recommend taking his class!
I took Professor Hilds class online this summer and it was a breeze. His lectures are pretty short and the textbook reading isnt that bad. The tests are straightforward too. Really liked this class.
Took class online and it was easy as long as you read the textbook or watch the lectures. Lot of reading but attendance isn't mandatory and professor is very good!
HIST 2112 with Dr. Hild was probably my favorite class this semester. It didn't take a lot of time, and the lecture audio recordings were always engaging. Your grade is just 4 exams, each worth 25%, but the tests are pretty easy as long as you read the course material. I would 10/10 recommend this class and this professor to everyone!
All there is to say is the textbook was US History for Dummies. Besides that, the big things of note were one book we had to read (like <200 pages), and 3 tests. Final wasn't even cumulative. Watch the lectures and power points, read the textbook and your golden.
Class graded only on 3 exams and a final. Each exam was reasonable, and the final. Attend lectures and reading the textbook will put you in a good place. Would take this professor again!
The class was composed of 4 tests and 4 tests only. If you study a bit, it's an easy A. Hild wasn't a fantastic lecturer by any means, but the class was easy.
If you have a chance to take U.S. Labor History, TAKE IT! It's a super interesting course and Dr. Hild did a great job presenting the content and tying together how the readings from various periods relate to each other. He's nice about grading, definitely go to lectures because he talks about a lot of stuff not on the slides that's helpful.
I took the 3 week online summer class with him and it was very easy. We had articles to read and lectures to watch, but the only grades came from 2 tests. The tests were easy and he gave us multiple extra credit opportunities. His lectures were hard to listen to, but the class was easy.
I can't say that his lectures were super interesting but it was an easy class for the social science credit. I did not do most of the readings but did do all of the extra credit offered and it was a pretty easy A.
Best professor to hit the scene. GOAT of the industry. The MJ of history lectures.
Hild is friendly and straight-forward in his teaching approach. Attend lectures and prepare for exams using the study guides and you'll be fine. Only exams were graded, but exams were very easy to do well on and can be boosted through extra-credit. Would strongly reccomend!
The only reason I am not rating Professor Hild a 5 is because the lectures were long and boring for me. He is a good lecturer but history is not my favorite subject. His tests are very easy if you read the textbook and look at the power point slides, and he gives a good amount of extra credit that can boost your overall grade by 5%.
Grade depends on tests but if you show up to class the tests wont be that difficult. He is willing to answer questions and his lectures are long but engaging.
Swell dude. Sometimes lectures took some will-power to stay awake through, but if you pay attention you're rewarded with some excellent dry humor and an easy A on the tests (very fair and directly correlated to lecture). The papers are easy and not too long. Reading isn't /necessary/, but if you read and listen you'll get a lot out of the class!
Professor Hild is a great person teaching a very easy class. Tests are very easy as long as you study a bit prior to each test. Extra credit is given a lot. Very easy A. Hild the homie for sure.
Overall a really easy class. The exams were straightforward and not too specific. The grading distribution is 100% exams but the exams were really easy and he had an extra credit opportunity for +5 points for each exam. Lectures aren't the most engaging. I didn't attend lectures but the review sessions were helpful.
He was a super nice and goofy guy that taught easy-to-follow lectures. Our only grades were 3 exams but you could write a paper before each for extra credit. Would 100% take him again. I paid an average amount of attention and got A+'s on all the exams.
Pretty easy class to get an A in if you even put a little bit of work into it. I took the class over the summer during ignite, so we only had three exams. On each of these exams, he'd provide 5 easy to get extra credit points as well as they were all multiple choice. The class is very lecture heavy, but very manageable.
Took his class during late summer. Grade consisted of only 3 exams, but they were direct questions based on study guide material and lecture notes. Textbook readings throughout, but I never read them. I stopped showing up to class and just took notes off of the posted powerpoints on Canvas and got a 99 in the class. Great guy and very knowledgable!
Dr.Hild was a awesome history professor! Somtimes hes lecutures would get rather long and boring but other then that he is very informative on all things history. He's test are pretty straight foward, and most have a chance for extra credit. If givin the chance I would take him again!
Professor Hild was such a great professor, he really knows his stuff about history before 1877. The lectures are kinda boring ngl, but not mandatory. He posts the slides on Canvas so going to class isn't really necessary. Your grade is based on four tests, including the final. The tests are easy, he literally posts study guides on Canvas. Easy A.
VERY boring lecturer. Tests were light work, the reading wasn't necessary, no other homework. Graded on average of four tests & final wasn't cumulative. Shows a doc the class before exam and you can get extra credit if you write a summary. Would recommend if you need your history credit. One question was "Fill in the blank: _enjamin Franklin".
Hild the homie!!!
Here's some tips to making an A: read the textbook (lit. gives 75-80% of the questions of the tests), when you get the study guide, read the powerpoint slides and fill it out, both defining and explaining the content. If you do these two things, you'll make an easy A.
Very caring about students needs and makes the class very easy. Only assignments were exams but if you study and do the extra credit then you'll be more than fine. Sometimes I would zone out when he was lecturing but I think that was more because of my lack of interest lol. He also very pretty funny and uploaded all his PowerPoints.
Excellent professor and easy class. Your entire grade is 3 tests and they are pretty simple long as you study for them. The study guide is your best friend and you have the option for 5 bonus points on each test. Make sure you try and study for tests and its an easy A.
I took this course in the Fall of 2021. The entirety of the grade was made up of 3 exams and an essay that was written in class on paper. The exams were easy if you paid attention to the lectures, otherwise, they WILL be challenging. Go to lecture, pay attention, and this will be an easy A.
I took this course in Spring 2022. This course was easy as long as you paid attention in lecture. Hild is a bit of a dry lecturer. The grade is based off of 3 exams and a hand-written essay done in class. They are simple if you engage in the material.
He is very knowledgeable and understanding of the students' situations. Grade consists of 4 tests, each worth 25% of your grade, but it really isn't that difficult and has enough extra credit for you to do well.
Test heavy but can be studied just through the test study guides. Very little effort actually needed except day before exams. Attendance isn't necessary at all.
Chill dude, but his lectures can be pretty boring sometimes. You can get an A in his class by cramming a few days before each exam. The entire class was 4 exams, one of which was open book. Overall nice, but I wish the lectures were more interesting, as I gradually found going to class to be increasingly inexpedient.
Hild is super chill, understanding, and makes it easy to get a good grade. Lectures can sometimes feel a little long, but the tests aren't hard at all.
I absolutely love Professor Hild! While his lectures didn't strike much interest with me, he gave everything you needed to succeed. The class has four tests, one being a straightforward forward book test. All other tests, including the final, were fifty multiple-choice questions. Reading the textbook chapters is useful, but not required to pass.
Computer wasn't working one day, cancelled class and gave everyone 5% extra credit on the next exam just because. Love this guy
Grade is based on 3 MCQ exams and a written exam on the Cherokee Removal book; gives 5% extra credit for writing essays. Shouldn't be hard if it's not your first time learning US history. However I do wish that Prof. Hild's lectures are more engaging, sometimes it's very easy to lose track of what he's talking about and hear everything clearly.
While his lecturing can be a bit boring at times, it is clear he knows the content very well. The exams are difficult but he gives many resources to get you prepared, and the content is digestible.
He's genuinely the sweetest and definitely knows what hes talking about. in the beginning of the year its a little hard to get the rhythm of how he lectures but eventually in the 1st 2 weeks you get the hang of it. He gives so much easy extra credit for tests; like sometimes when not many people showed up, he just gives out extra credit if ur there
Graded by 4 tests. One of the four is a written test that covers a book. All four tests are very straightforward. Very chill professor and I enjoyed his lectures!
Great professor to take for History.
