BEST PROF EVER! Good looking, funny, and accommodating to the class. Textbook is necessary, but it's really interesting to read cuz you can really relate to it. Class participation is an easy mark (answer a question he has). There are easy quizzes for every chapter that are for marks. Provides a study guide for midterm and final. Such a sweetheart!

Fantastic professor. Hilarious, interesting, and you can really tell he enjoys what he is doing. Tests were M/C and very easy. I do recommend reading the textbook material for the midterms also, although they are primarily based off of his lectures. Overall terrific professor...this will most likely be your favorite class of the semester.

Fantastic professor! He is open to feedback and, therefore, extremely accommodating. No tricks on his exams-just review lecture slides and read the textbook! Very interesting material and lectures...he is hilarious! I recommend him and this class if you want to have an enjoyable experience learning about material that is applicable to everyday life

An extremely approachable and hilarious prof. The material is fascinating and actually really applicable to everyday life. The prof made the exams and assignments fair so it was not that hard to do well. More reading than the average class, but the textbook is really interesting so it is not too bad

Amazing prof! Very approachable, kind, funny, and knowledgeabe about the topic. 30% of your mark is participation and doing a weekly open book quiz. One of the best classes at the U of A. It's useful for everyday life and is interesting.I actually loved going to class. His exams were fair and very easy if you came to class and paid attention.

Hilarious prof and always keeps class interesting! Very accommodating and helpful. 30% of grade is class participation (answer q on paper, no wrong answer) and quizzes. Writes fair tests, go to class and you'll do fine, study a bit and you'll do well. Very applicable to real life. TAKE THIS CLASS with Matt, you won't regret it!!

Matt Johnson is by far THE BEST prof I have ever had in my four years at the U of A. He take the time to get to know students by name (which I thought was cool) as hes passionate about his students.. they weren't just another number to him. He is also very passionate about this topic and makes it so interesting. Strongly encourage taking this class

Really great prof who was friendly and approachable. Exams are easy to prepare for because he tells you pretty much exactly what to expect on them. Lectures worth going to for easy class participation marks. Reading quizzes are given which helped with reviewing too. Material is relatable and interesting, definitely recommend this class & prof!

Matt is awesome. He is funny and has a passion for his discipline. If you put the effort into this class you will get the mark out of it. The weekly quizzes aren't easy but if you actually do the reading and spend some time on them you will get your thirteen percent. Plus - show up to class ! - you get 17% free participation marks!

You must go to class! In-class participation (short write ups) is 17% and online reading quizzes was 13% - YOU MUST READ THE TEXTBOOK! He is so passionate about the topic, and gives crystal clear explanations, if you go to class, and read the textbook you will get a good mark, he also gives great review for exams! Would take this class again!

Matt is a great guy, and is super passionate about his work. You have to go to class, or else you lose the 17% participation marks, but those are really easy marks. His online quizzes aren't terrible, and they're very relevant to both the midterm and final. Super interesting class, would recommend everyone takes it, it helps in the real world!

Dr. Johnson is the best prof I've had. He is pretty hilarious and I never wanted to miss his class. Most days you have to do a little participation assignment, but it's usually just writing about yourself. You have to be okay with talking (past experiences, ideas on intimate relationships, etc.) to the people around you though. Fabulous overall.

Super interesting course, you do have to read the whole book which can be tedious but its actually pretty interesting which makes it better. The class is not mandatory, just read the text and go over the slides and your good. He was also a very fast marker, usually had marked the same day. Hard to get an A, though, I got an 87% and only ended up with A-

By the end of the semester i really liked his teaching style. I think it was a good idea to have quizzes every week on the chapters. It was a lot of work but it kept me up to date with the course content. The midterm we had short answer which i defiantly didn't like but the final thankfully doesn't. Class participation activities work 1% each.

He was a marriage therapist before he became a professor. He knows what he's taking about. This is a very interesting course and he is an engaging speaker. It is a hard class to grasp concepts around because you feel intuitively you'd know the answer. He's very specific on what you need to know! He also cried on our last lecture, and learned names!

Take this class! Amazing prof and the course content is very interesting! Must go to class but totally worth it for a free 17% (17 class participations which include answering a question on a piece of paper then handing it in...), online quizzes for every chapter but that is also a nice 13% of your grade. Tests were pretty straightforward and fair.

He gives a study guide for the midterm and the final, majority of which end up on the test. depending on the level of effort you put in, this can be an easy A course. There is a lot of reading but the online quizzes keep you on track.

He's the best! I loved HECOL 210 so much because of him. He encourages questions and tests fairly. Class discussion is always fun and I always looked forward to attending his class. Even the textbook was fun to read, which made the weekly chapter quizzes easy to do too! Take him if you can!

Matt is probably the best prof I've ever had! He's respected, he's experienced in his field, and he genuinely wants his students to enjoy his class. He gives you 1-2 reading quizzes a week, but it's open book. All in all, Matt is fantastic and makes HECOL 210 really interesting and fun

Dr. Johnson is so passionate for the course material making the lectures very enjoyable! You have to read the textbook since a good portion will be on his tests. The curve tends to be high - I ended with a 91% in the course overall and only got an A- so its not easy to get an A. I highly recommend Dr. Johnson and would take this class again!

love love love Matt. Such an interesting class and actual information that is helpful for real life. He cares SO MUCH about his students doing well and in general as well. There are weekly-ish reading quizzes so you do need the textbook, takes attendance randomly. Midterm was super fair. GIVES STUDY GUIDES and clearly outlines everything on it.

I'm not sure what the last rating is talking about because I found Matt to be incredibly kind and genuine. Explains topics well and has VERY fair exams. Grading: 15% in class tophat questions, 15% weekly reading quizzes, 30% midterm, 40% final. Textbook mandatory for reading quizzes. Especially easy class if familiar with psych or soc concepts

10/10 prof and class! Defs not a hard class but you obvs gotta put in the work. Class includes reading quizzes, participation marks (review questions and quick short personal responses (literally just a sentence long), 1 midterm, and a cumulative final. Mat also provides a study guide for both exams so go over that and you're set. Amazing prof!

Matt's a good guy, very nice and friendly. Pretty accessible via email but not so much for office hours. His exams were fair and a lot of your marks were based off open book quizzes and in class Top-Hat assignments. The curve was really brutal because of this so beware. Lecture was really engaging and I really enjoyed this class! Highly recommend!

Amazing prof! He was able to make a class taken online be highly enjoyable and interesting. Replies to any questions or concerns students have, and seems like a great person in general. He is funny and a great prof! Highly recommend!

You do 15 quizzes strictly based off the readings, meaning you will read the entire textbook, that being said the class was interesting and didn't make the readings like a chore. His lectures are very straight forward. As long as you do the readings and actually DO THEM and study from your notes you will be more than fine. Would 100% recommend.

This prof is amazing! he explains things really well, and the class itself is super interesting. We had 3 midterms (non cumulative) and a final (cumulative), and then we had short weekly quizzes on the readings. The material is laid out super well for lectures and material is not too hard. He makes the material even more interesting!

I agree with some of the other reviews that we were tested on some specific details, but all of the exams and quizzes were open book so I think thats reasonable. My only complaint is that the grading scale was never clear as he said the class was not curved but was based on relative performance and couldn't give us an estimate of grade cut offs.

Awesome online class - 1-2 reading quizzes a week, 3 midterms and a final (all open book). Actually go through/take notes on the lectures and readings, do the reading quizzes (they add up), and specific questions wont be a surprise. Grades are based on relative performance to the rest of the class, like lots of 1st year science courses.

Class was super interesting overall thing are very applicable to your life, the weekly quizzes is where is whereI lost most of my marks the midterm and finals are open book so cannot complain- grading scheme is blurry but not bad- lecture are asynchronous with weekly meetups

The class consisted of weekly quizzes, 3 midterms, and the final exam. The course content was very interesting, and he gave great lectures! If you are good at memorization, the exams are very easy!

second class with Matt and again, nothing but amazing things to say! This intro to counselling class was online but it ended up being my favourite class in all of COVID. Him and our TA made the environment so comfortable. Bi weekly mock counselling interviews with same group, 2 recorded counselling assignments, reflection paper and presentation.

I've had Matt for 2 courses now, he's hands down the best professor I've had! His teaching style is very practical with explicit learning objectives and vast opportunities to apply knowledge. This course required participation which was daunting at first but extremely valuable and fun! Overall Matt makes his courses highly rewarding and engaging.

This class is very interesting and applicable to real life. Matthew is an amazing prof who really cares for his students. However, this class is not an easy A. The curve is really high. An 88 in this class was still just a B+.

You definitely have to put work into this class, as there is tons of reading and content, but it doesnt even feel like work. Such an interesting class, but wouldnt be nearly as enjoyable if it wasnt with Matt. I recommend this course and prof to everyone. One of my favourite profs for sure.

There are textbook reading quizzes every week, but readings were really interesting so it didn't feel like schoolwork. There are 2 midterms and a final. Tests ask for specific details, so do study even if they're open book. Pretty straightforward. Prof is engaging and makes class fun to listen to! He gives me hope in love...

He is one of the best profs I've had by far. He is very passionate about the subject and uses personal anecdotes which makes the material very engaging. All of the material is definitely relevant to real life, and he's hilarious. Weekly (sometimes bi-weekly) reading quizzes and open book exams, as long as you prep a bit beforehand you'll do well!

This has been the most interesting class Ive ever taken. The professor is awesome, he makes class fun and interesting. I promise you, that you will leave this class with at least one thing that will be useful in your life. I would 100% recommend this class!

Such a nice guy, a great lecturer, and just really kind overall. The class was really interesting and he did a good job teaching it. Everything was open book and online, as he did not want to give students test anxiety by proctoring. Loved this class and would definitely take this prof again.

Matt is awesome! Plus the course content is really interesting. He really engages you during lectures. But, it is super textbook heavy and course heavy. You have to work for it, but it is a really fun class!

This is the second class I have had with Matthew and he continues to be amazing. This class in general was amazing but he made it so much better. He really cares about his students and it shows. He is great at explaining concepts and his feedback is thorough. I really wish he taught more classes.

Brilliant class , Brilliant professor. You learn a lot of useful life skills. Pretty simple class , reading quizzes and midterms. Lots of reading to do but it's interesting.

the midterms, final were all MC & honestly pretty easy no difficult questions. I would take notes from the textbook, study off the lecture slides. the course doesn't require a lot of work, I usually would start study a day maybe two before the actual test. the prof is pretty funny, tries to make the course engaging. defs take this class if you can!

This course was work and is no GPA booster by any means, but the prof and the interesting material make it worthwhile. Dr. Johnson is funny, caring, and very fair. Keep up with daily reviewing, read the textbook and draw on parts NOT covered in lecture (those will be tested on exams). 3 Midterms at 20% each and a 40% final, all of which was doable.

Matt is a caring, funny, and fantastic prof with interesting lectures. The 3 midterms and final are doable, but you must read the textbook! The book is a surprisingly good read and about 15-20% of test material comes from the book(not lectures). The class is an easy grade if you do the readings and pay attention during lectures.

Matthew Johnson definitely improved my experience in HECOL 210; the course turned out to be tougher than I'd assumed. He's a fun, dedicated professor that obviously loves his job and his study, but this is not a class you can slack off in. I don't blame the prof at all, just expect a tough class! He even says it's not an "easy A."

Was super interested in HECOL210 and Matthew is super fun! He definitely loves teaching, and his lectures are engaging and concise but you do have to read the textbooks and get extra material because it will be tested on the exam! He does shift grades at the end so everyones letter grades had diff criterias but put effort and you'll be fine!

Cannot say enough good things about Dr. Johnson. SO funny, so engaging and really has a passion for the discipline. If you do your textbook readings and you attend lectures, you will do well. His tests are very straight forward and not intended to trick you. I learned a lot from this class and would recommend it to literally anyone.

fantastic at his job, kept lectures interesting and fun. very good at preparing you for exams, gives lots of "pop" quizs at beginning of class to see what class is struggling with and explain it further (not for marks). he went through Midterms and explained answers. 10/10 highly recommend!

This man is one of the best profs I have ever seen. You can tell he truly cares about what he is teaching and wants you to be excited. Midterms and Final are graded fair and he goes through it with everyone so you know where you went wrong. Wouldn't call it a grade booster, lots of memorization but very enjoyable and I would highly suggest him.

I loved this professor! he was so funny and so kind. However, it was a tad bit annoying that the textbook was testable. He would test a lot on certain studies and percentages, and would test stuff in the textbook that most people would overlook. Overall, there are 3 midterms and 1 final in this course, and by the second one I was done.

Matt is a great professor! While you can rely on the textbook to study, his lectures are so amazing you want to attend anyways. His study guides are concise, and accurate to the exams. His exams are fair, and based on material discussed in class.

Amazing prof. I had him last year in the fall term. It wasnt really a grade booster but taking notes on each textbook chapter really helps for exams. I felt the questions were mostly knowledge check questions, and if you knew the material it was easily to answer correctly. The course is also very applicable in real life and it was very fun to take.

Professor Johnson's lectures are very engaging and interesting. He is very down-to-earth and passionate about the material. The exams were largely fair and tested on class content. He is one of my favourite professors I've had in University.

He is very engaged and knowledgeable about the subject he is teaching. He makes class lecture interesting and engaging. He is super flexible with his office hours and always willing to answer questions. The class can be a little difficult if you don't study but he provides clear study guides for each midterm and final that are extremely helpful.

He is very clear with his expectations for the exams, just be sure to read the textbook (he puts, ‘only textbook questions' on the exam which is content he does not go over in lecture). He checks in through wooclap or one-on-one convos before class. Graded us using 3 midterms and a cumulative final. Attend class and take notes, you still have to put in the effort.
