This is a great class! The teacher is very enthusiasitc about teacheing and very open mined and helpful. It is not hard but it is not easy. If one wnats to learn cultural anthropology this is the best class to do it. I strongly recommend it.
This teacher is really sweet, clear and straight forward. He is very to the point and is not too serious which is nice. It is definately a good intro to cultural anth. class.
Kennedy is an awesome professor. He keeps the class interesting and fun. He also gives you many options for extra credit, setting you up for success in his class. He's great.
A very nice guy and an interesting lecturer. The class is fairly easy if you make even a small effort to read and listen. Highly recommend!
One of the best classes I took here! He is very knowledgeable and is a great teacher.
Class was great. Keeps students interests. Must read the material, but it is very enjoyable reading. Heated class discussion. Knowledgeable of the subject. Is interested in students' opinions of the material
Really good choice of readings and films. Cares a lot about the subject matter, and it shows. Lectures and class discussions are engaging.
Hella cool teacher! Gives you test questions to study and essay topics. Lets you write an extra credit essay. Drops one test grade. Pulled up my grade to a B :) Take him!
Matthew genuinely enjoys anthro. He does a great job of explaining the material. His grading on essays is a bit tough, but he allows one extra credit essay to replace your lowest grade. One of the most interesting classes I've ever taken, and you get to watch lots of interesting films.
Mr. Kennedy certainly knows what he is talking about in his chosen field. The only thing to be careful of when taking this class is knowing the family tree structure inside and out, since it's tricky. On the second exam, he gives you a family tree diagram, and you have to fill it out. I tripped up on that, and got a low score.
Excellent professor! Makes everyone feel comfortable and always provokes great discussions. Honors section means lots of reading and writing, but he is a very fair grader and his tests are not difficult if you have been in class. Shows LOTS of interesting FILMS! Gives extra credit options. Extremely enjoyable and highly recommended!
Great teacher! Tests can be tricky, but do the extra credit and well on the papers and you will get an A. Hated the Zuni book, but Spirit was excellent. Informal lectures make it seem like you are hearing friends chat, which makes it easier to learn. Very approachable. Why take Anth 3 when you can get the honors credit for Anth 3AC?
You learn some interesting stuff in this class. A movie every Friday. I didn't feel the need to take much notes except for a few vocab words he wants you to know. As long as you pay attention in class and read the boring book (skimmed most of it), you'll do fine on the tests. IMO, you don't really need to study, just do quick reviews and that's it.
Brng at tmes, but can be engagng. Rambles. Grt use of movies and cult evnts. Kinship chrts HARD bcz they are not org well. Tsts can be unclr at times. Very consdrng of others arguments. Very helpful in clarifying. Usually left me wanting to hear more...even tho he cld be boring. LUVS wht he teaches! Good guy!
I loved Matthew. He really loves the subject & makes it entertaining & fun for students. He is a fair grader if you show you are trying. I have never had so much fun in a class. If you have a chance to take him...do it! You won't regret it. In response to the person who said the book was expensive, that's because publishers charge a copyright fee.
Really briliant, very funny, and nice.
Incredibly brilliant and funny.
AWSOME.
Passionate about anthro and about teaching. He is fair, and helpful and takes time to chat after class if you need it. Positive energy and humour combine to make his class fulfilling and fun!!! He gives loads of extra credit and we watch fun and relevant films. Make sure to use grammar and spellcheck on your papers!!!
he offers a lot of extra credits, so no need to worry you will fail his class. and if you study well for his test then it is pretty easy. Somehow his voice always makes me go to sleep. Recommend this teacher
One of the best teachers! Interested in the material and makes it interesting. Also an outstanding scholar. Always interested in students' comments.
Incredibly awesome instructor. I took Anthro 3 with him last semester and loved it. I am now in his online Anthro 20 and that is great, too!
Matthew is a great instructor with an in-depth knowledge of his field. I feel like the only thing that really tainted this class was the fact that he was unable to control certain loud-mouths from taking him off topic during lectures. I wanted to cut out some tongues by the end of the semester. Oh, and he is cute. Like, REALLY CUTE. That helped.
Kennedy explains things very clearly and he has an in depth knowledge of his field. Antro 3 is pretty easy just have to do well on your essays and read a little for the tests.
EXCELLENT, cant say enough about him. Very understanding, fun, energetic. Semi-strict about deadlines, lot of EC chances. FUN FUN FUN teacher. makes class very interesting and there's never a dull moment. Talks about random things, but makes it relate to u. VERY HELPFUL. One of the best teachers I've ever had. if u dont like him, somethings wrong
Professor Kennedy has a wide range of knowledge about anthropology and is very clear in explaining things. His cultural anthropology is a great place to learn. The class consisted of: 2 essays, 2 tests, a few movie critics and a ton of extra credit. Great class and great teacher.
I'd be down to hang out with this guy. He's a total nerd with a good sense of humor. However, this class is not for you if you actually want to get into it with Anthro. It's way too easy. No studying required. All scantron test. 2 mega-easy papers. Lots of interesting films. The only homework is a page summary of each film. Too easy!
Mr. Kennedy is one of the best teachers who always encourages his students a lot and teaches very relevant concepts! 3AC is honors section, but I felt this class was very worthwhile! 3 essays, 3 books, and 3 exams, but, they're not that hard, as long as you do your best and show your effort. SUBMIT essays ontime! Otherwise, enjoy the course!
Of all the teachers I've encountered, Mr. Kennedy is in every sense one of the best I've ever had. He is really knowledgeable and insightful (and not only in Anthro). He's understanding, open-minded, and encouraging. He accepts different perspectives from students with great enthusiasm and truly open people's eyes. He's one in a million.
What i wanna know is who the hell rated him as hot?? Lol. He's a great teacher though. REALLY sparks interest in the subject. VERY interesting stuff.
great teacher,T/F and Multiple Choice Exams. 2 tests midterm,1 final, 2 essays, many extra credit if u do them.He is nice and fair. Tests base on notes and book. you MUST read the book and review his study sheet before tests. C is easy to get.You MUST work hard! Fun is class. I recommend students who are not ESL to take him.
I love this man! He is a delight. His class is the only class I truly look forward to coming to everyday. I always learn something interesting every class session.
awesome teacher. breeze of a class. movie buff. lots of not lame anthropology movies. dont need to take notes, cause he has a story for all of his lectures.
Okay...so he's really like one of the nicest people in the world. Easy class.
Love Mr. Kennedy. He conveys all topics with a knowledgeable passion. Funny, smart, seems like he would be in a literary circle with David Sedaris...
Very interesting and organized in his lecture. I was always excited to attend his class. Very clear and straightforward. The only work was a few exams and a couple of essays, but they were all simple if you read the text. He's intelligent, and he relates the study to every day life, and you learn so much about culture. Highly recommended!
Take him! Online course; super easy; learn an amazing amount of information; keeps things fun and easy; lots of reading but it is def managable. Tests every few weeks, mult choice midterm, always answers emails *quickly*. Understanding and helpful with concerns/questions. Great professor and amazing class. Easy A (and you learn lots!).
Overall he's nice and easy but you can hardly understand what he's talking about in class. So I space out most of the time.In his class the test, movie critique, and essays are important to your grade. But other things I don't think that he cares that much. Easy teacher but not too easy in grade.
Professor Kennedy is awesome. You can tell he's passionate about what he teaches. He is extremely helpful and approachable. I got an A in this class, even though I missed a few classes. Just do the work. Study guides for tests/finals are posted online. He also offers extra credit! I recommend him 100%.
Can all teachers be like him?
Mr. Kennedy is a fabulous professor! He's a very informative anthropologist! Though I find anthropology boring, he made it a bit more interesting. His exams aren't bad, his papers are straightforward, and the film critiques are basically your own opinion about the film. I highly recommend him for anthropology!
Kennedy is a really remarkable professor; the best I've had to date. He's also a genuinely kind and considerate human being.
You need the book. Attendance is kinda important. Theres a lot of videos, which is cool and their not that bad..He's pretty funny and really nice, and his projects are pretty interesting.Overall really easy..I breezed right through this class and i just took it for the easy A.TAKE HIM!
great teacher, interactive, lots of film, slides, and story. I would that the class again in a heartbeat. But remember to read the materials, really important. the lectures are great for more comprehensive understanding, but not really fundamental to the class test.Do the extra credit paper! its completely worth it.
Wonderful professor. Lectures are interesting, funny, and informative. He has a cute quirky sense of humor and drives the class exceptionally. You'll watch a decent number of films in this class. Grading is pretty lenient, and assignments are nothing you'd lose sleep over.
Wonderful professor. You can tell he's passionate about anthropology, and he knows how to make his students interested as well. He has a great, quirky sense of humor. Very fair grader, and the assignments are easy. You'll watch a lot of films, but they're good ones. Make sure you read the book, a lot of the test material comes from it. Take him!
Very fun and helpful lecturer! I loved coming to his class. I was rarely bored because he simplified topics and made them so interesting. No homework, but you definitely need to buy the textbook. Tests are based on his lectures and the book. Tests aren't that difficult because he gives you a study guide before each test so you know what to study fo
I slacked off and got a B, but an A was easily obtainable. Work is minimal. Movie reviews are easy as pie. 2 essays, which you should work well on! The tests are alright. I barely studied and managed to get Bs on them. Tests are mostly from the book, but listen in class for a couple questions. Study guides handed before every test. Final was easy.
I thoroughly enjoyed attending Professor Kennedy's class this past semester. Matthew is clearly passionate about the subject matter and shares his knowledge with his students in a fashion that is comprehensible, albeit at times he was insecure about the interest level of the class. I received a B with a fair amount of effort.
Matthew is awesome! Hilarious, and eloquent with his lectures, he makes anthropology fun! My favorite professor at CCSF so far. He's very nice and approachable and never gets upset or talks down to students. Pay attention to the lectures and take some notes, read the assigned reading and do a lil extra cred work and you're almost sure to get an A.
Kennedy is by far the best teacher. He has such a happy aura- it's impossible not to smile when you see this guy! (: I had no interest in anthro prior to this class, but after this class i'm going to take more anthro classes. Very sweet! Lectures are clear. Explains things well. He's so adorable. I just want to put him in my pocket (:
Nicest teacher ever with a great sense of humor! Movie every week w/summary for easy pts. 2 multiple choice test (hands out studyguide b4hand with Q's he's going to ask)and 2 essays (choose topics from a list). 100 Question final (lets u use index card w/notes). And multiple EC options that replaces ur lowest score(s) and additonal pts toward grade
5/19/10 review - I meant anthro 3 not 2.
Kennedy is a fun teacher but rambles at times if the class is silent. Very helpful during office hours. Extremely easy class- 2 tests, 2 essays and extra credit which may replace a test grade entirely. Study guides are given before tests. Dont need to read the book! :) Chill class with some thought provoking subjects. Recommended for stoners.
I took this class online and it was a pretty good experience. The info is very interesting and the teacher is very nice and helpful. There is weekly reading, responses, 3 quizzes, 1 final, and 1 eight page paper near the end.
Take his honors section!
Great teacher! One of the best in the Anthropology department in fact. I had him for 4 classes, Anthro 5 was my favorite, but he teaches every class well. Prof. Kennedy does multiple choice tests and short essays, and he usually lets you have an index card/cheat sheet. He is very approachable and willing to help. He also writes reccomendations!
Prof Kennedy is a great teacher. The material (esp the films) is interesting and the work load is not too much. Keep up with the readings cos there'll b test questions that u'll only know if u read e book. There are xtra options to help up ur grade. He's very approachable and will definitely help if you need it.Highly recommend his classes.
I didn't show up for 3/4 of the semester, and for the 1/4 where I did show up, I didn't pay attention to anything this guy has to say. I aced his midterms and tests. I basically passed this guy's class without even showing up. Easy A, very nice, very clear, and if you actually pay attention you actually learn stuff. RECOMMENDED!!!
professor kennedy is amazing! definitely one of the best i've had at a college level. he loves what he's talking about and is also extremely helpful and engaging at a personal level. his class is also definitely one of the most interesting i've taken too. take his classes!
Absolutely wonderful professor. Made me want to major in the subject. He makes it interesting, hes extremely knowledgable, and he covers all sorts of things that pop up in all other humanities and social science classes. A great core class and a great teacher.
Great professor! Learned a lot in this class. Tests is fairly easy if you read the textbook and he always lets you come to his office to ask more questions. Loves to use cultural examples from Indonesia!Replies your email really fast!
Mr. Kennedy is passionate about anthropology and goes over the material really well and makes it easy to understand. He is a really nice and reasonable guy and always want the best for his students.
Professor Kennedy is awesome! Hands down my favorite Professor at CCSF. I have had Anthro 2, 3AC, 5, and 20 with him, he is an excellent teacher. Grades on participation, tests and papers. He is very knowledgeable and clear on the subject of Anthropology, especially on the culture and archeology of Mezoamerica.
Taking him for Anthropology 3 and boy, he is a GREAT teacher. I never knew or liked how anthropology sounded (particularly because i'm bad at science even though this is beahvioral science), but i really love this subject now. Getting a "B" so far. His tests are easy if you study!! and lots of movie days! great class.
AMAZING. He is an intellectual, clearly interested and well-educated in the subject of Anthropology. Always having a positive attitude, Kennedy never fails to make you laugh. I am definitely having fun in that class, and you will too. We seriously need more professors like him.
Hes great! Very high energy, makes archaeology interesting since hes so funny. He has a review day before the test, essays are alright. Provides extra credit. I looked forward to this class. Take notes and you should be good. Oh! and he shows a film every week!
LOVE THIS MAN. So cool, smart, funny, and sweet. Great teacher. Sometimes asks test questions objectively that seem a bit more subjective, but if you ask for help he will always clarify for you. I have to say, I actually would've liked a bit more of a workload- more HW or something. Not quite challenging enough- I am a total overachiever, though!
Mr. Kennedy is hella sweet. I was nervous prior to the class cause it was my first anthro course, but he made the class enjoyable, bearable, and interesting! He doesn't have a mean bone in his body, and he's funny, too. TAKE HIM!
Prof. Kennedy is the ABSOLUTE BEST! He's super engaging, funny, sweet, and clearly loves teaching as much as he loves Anthropology. I didn't even know what Anthro was before this class, and during the course of the semester I nearly changed my major! TAKE HIM- teachers like this don't come along often enough.
Matt was friendly, humorous, and approachable. I took LGBT 11 over the summer - not very demanding, papers were straightforward and reading was minimal, but supplementary to the films we were watching. A very fun class and good to balance out the more rigorous demands of other classes you may be taking in the semester.
I enjoy him and his class! He is extremely humble and sweet and his lectures are beautifully articulated in a manner that gets the mind interested and thinking. He assigns minimal work but reading is required to get flying grades on the tests.
While this class is challenging, it is also very interesting. Careful! Term paper counts for 1/3 your grade. Profes. Kennedy is one of City College's rare gems, extremely well versed & independently enthusiastic on the subject. He is quick to respond to questions, quick to grade, friendly too! By far the best online course I've taken out of 5.
Took his class a few yrs ago and it was pretty easy. We watched movies every other week and submitted notes on them, 3 MC tests and 1 paper. EC is available(easy). He hands out a study guide for the tests, pretty much just terms and definitions, it's really easy. Mr. Kennedy is very kind and friendly. Recommended.
Three essays, Three tests, Final culmative. overall, easy class.. i almost got an A but did horribly on the final.. lol.. sorta sucks but whatever.. if your looking for an easy and interesting class, then i highly recommend this teacher!!
Outstanding professor. Great lecturer, extremely personable, and makes the material interesting. Lectures do not really go hand-in-hand with the textbook, but his exams, while not VERY challenging, use some vocab from said book. You can get by on exams by paying attention and then going over his study guides for vocab from book. Highly recommended
This class was ok. It was pretty relaxed. Some questions on test were tricky. Some questions were easy. 3 essays,3 test and a final. One test or essay gets dropped. Overall it was ok.
Engaging, very knowledgeable; also completely willing to learn from the students if they possess insight. Lectures are entertaining & includes material that will be on tests. Essays are easy; if you submit them early, he lets you improve them if they're not A papers. Totally willing to help students or chat about culture. Highly recommended.
i received NO feedback whatsoever from the instructor and while the material was interesting - it was not a positive experience to receive NO feedback and then have my GPA dragged down because of the surprise - i would NOT recommend this type of instruction.
an entertaining class but the tests were difficult to comprehend, especially when he doesnt cover the material in a helpful manner. plus theres a big essay due towards end of semester.
The onliine class was a bit challenging in that one has to try and pick out the important information that isn''t delivered in the form of a lecture with highlights. His test questions were at times confusing but overall the class was manageable butt still one needs to be a self-starter for the online class.
professor kennedy is the best he is so cute i love him and he should be the role model for all professors. i enjoy his lectures and im not bored in class! take him!
His teaching method is very laid back, and this was my second course with him. There is a a good amount of reading, but by attending lecture, taking notes and doing the reading, tests aren't all that tough. He teaches multiple segments of this same course, so it is possible to attend different time slots for a dynamic schedule.
Very passionate about the subject, lectures are interesting, very helpful. 2 Essays, 2 Exams, and the Final. Essay's are short with lots of interesting prompts to choose from. Being an intro class the material is broad and exams end up being primarily definitions of anthro specific terms.
Great professor. Two essays which aren't hard or long and two tests and a final. Pretty laid back teaching style and interesting material
Very passionate teacher, lectures are interesting - especially if you are interested in people and culture. 2 Essays, 2 Exams, Final. Essay's are short (1-3 pages). Exams can be more difficult as they are primarily terms and definitions, and require memorization. Textbook does not cover same material as lectures, both are required to pass exams.
Took this course online spring 2016. Do not miss out on weekly assignments you won't have a chance to make it up. Read articles and answer the weekly questions . Quizzes are timed and bout 25 questions multi choice . Long as you read martial it's an easy pass . The final is an 8page essay of thrree options you can choose from. Glad I took this.
At first this class was a turn-off but eventually I decided to stay since I needed the credit for the course. Basically, ever few weeks there is an essay due and an exam. If you don't do the reading, go to class, or do any of the assigned homework you won't pass. The class was not difficult but was a little overwhelming. I learned a lot.
Professor Kennedy's class is a must-take! His lectures are lively, engaging, and fascinating. Easy multiple choice exams, based on book and lecture, and short papers with topics you choose from a large number of interesting prompts. He is friendly, caring, and knows a lot about the arts as well as world cultures. Class discussions are great!
