He has so much energy! Takes a confusing topic and breaks it down until it is very easy to understand. Study guides for tests are helpful and tests are not hard at all. No formal papers. I recommend him!
Run Screaming!!! Weird, weird guy, sitting through class is extreamly excrusiating.

He loves to hear himself talk. It's actually a really strange class that I can't seem to stay awake through. Whatever you do, don't take him!
He is super smart, and can outwit anyone. He is very excited about the material he teaches, and tries to make it very clear. Hard material and difficult tests, but his antics keep you interested!
He made philosophy very interesting. I love his energy and love for what he does. Very helpful and willing to be there for his students. This is the man to take.
He's very strange, but really likes philosophy. I still hate the material, but if you do the study guide for the test, you'll come out with an easy A. If your gonna suffer through it anyways, you might as well take him.
Good teacher and a nice guy
Krazy Kent sure loves his philosophy! He can answer any question you ask him. Very helpful teacher. All questions on the tests are givin on study guides. Papers are only 1 page long. Good class to take for anyone.
im not sure if hes just a really good teacher or if its just an easy class, but i deffeanitly would recomend taking him
Awesome. I recommend him to everyone. I think any other Prof for an 8:15 class would make me fall asleep...but he's so energetic it's impossible to do that. Take him!
He is a really hard professor but gives you all of the notes and lets you know everything that you need to know for the test. It is up to you to see how well you want to do on the test depending on how much time you put in to study.
matthew a is the man
Amazing teacher. Loves philosophy and does a very good job explaining all the readings in class. He writes everything you need to know on the board, and his tests are very straight forward, no surprises.
Kent is one of the best professors I have had here at St. Thomas. He is extremely dedicated to his work and his students. He loves philosophy and teaches it to his class in a fune, energetic way. Mr. Kent is extremely helpful with questions, and his tests are not a surprise at all. Great guy!!!!!!
The Categorical Imperitive machine rocks my world, but not as much as Glorf Boards. I love Kent's poofy blue hat, he's so cute!! I was at a C- at midterm, he held nonstop review sessions for about 6 hours the night before the final, until about 11 p.m. He was sweating, exhausted, and I got a B+.
Funny and bounces around the room. He makes fun of himself on a regular basis. He will not come to class without a suit and tie..nerdy but awfully funny. He knows his philosophy. When we get a one page paper back, his comments are at least two full pages only trying to make you think. Easy.
Matthew Kent is a king among men. His speech pattern is the funniest I have probably ever seen. I'll never forget when I saw him walking on the side of the street in his little hat. He is indeed very cute. Also a nice guy who helped us review for the final for like 6 hours. Kent is my hero.
I was dreading taking this class. But with Mr. Matthew Kent, this class was hilarious. He gives great examples, and review sheets with all of the answers you need to know on the tests. Makes philosophy somehow seem interesting! Too bad he is leaving UST!!!
Hands down, one of the best there is. The most helpful and energentic prof. Gives a study guide with EVERYTHING thats going to be on the test. Literally jumps around the room when he gets excited about a certain topic, and makes the hardest subject the easiest to learn. I went just to see his suit, tie and suspenders everyday.
Kent is hilarious & makes philosophy comical; he runs around the room during lectures! You pray before every class;kinda reminds me of the 40 yr old virgin! His test are short answer, but he gives out a study guide that's JUST LIKE his tests! Just a few two-page essays or so! His class only cost me $9.72 for books, goes over reading ass. in lectures
This guy is the****. He is hillarious and can keep your interest in a very difficault subject like you wouldn't believe. Almost no hw and he gives out a study guide that is basically the test itself.
I wouldn't say he's the BEST prof I've had, but without a doubt he's this most caring. If you are willing, Dr. Kent will do whatever if takes to help you do well. Before the final he was coming in on sat. and sun. for optional hour review sessions. Go to class, try your best to take good notes, and he will help you learn the material.
He's super funny. He gets really excited about Philosophy and often skips around the room. If you memorize his study guides you WILL get an A on his tests because he uses the exact same questions. Very rarely will you have a quiz.
BEST PROF EVER. He was so fun, if you pay attention he'll have you laughing at least a few times every day. He is such a goofy guy, and I don't even think he tries to be. He gives you a study guide of absolutely everything that will be on the test, EXACTLY. He might reword it a little but it's still pretty much the same. Easy and fun!!!
Very energetic guy. Study guides are great for his tests, tests are HUGE. Goes over readings in lecture in class. Daily Ass. are only 3% of grade. Each of his 3 tests are around 30% of grade. I do not like philosophy and I am getting a B, he makes things very clear and welcomes questions all the times, wants his class to be clear/understandable.
Dr. Kent's a great guy. He's one of the most caring profs I've had, and he really knows his stuff. The grading is pretty straight-forward. If you go to class, and use his review sheets there is no reason you shouldn't get an A. Anyone who has to sign up for Ethics should take him.
I loved Dr.Kent-- he is so energetic and such a goofball. He's really passionate about philosophy and makes everything really clear. Tests are 99% of the grade, so you really need to know the material. The tests were pretty easy if you studied.
Seems like a nice guy but he is out of his mind. Very smart, but doesn't know how to organize his notes. Goes into WAY too much detail. Tests and study guides are a billion pages long and there is no way to do good, unless you memorize the 8 page study guide. Very hard for a freshmann general course. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF!
Easiet prof ever. You don't need to read or attend class. One week before the test he gives you a study guide with the exact questions on the test and then has a review session at which he tells you the answer for every question.
I don't know what that other rating was talking about, but this is a very easy class, and if you can't memorize common sense topics, you really shouldn't be in college. The class is pretty boring, and the textbook is very biased (Catholic... surprise, surprise), but Dr. Kent tries really hard and is very passionate about the course.
Dr. Kent was a great professor! He is a little eccentric but he was very nice and made sure the class understood the information before going onto the next topic. There are quizzes almost every day but they are the simplest things ever. He also gives study guides before every test with all the test questions written in different forms. Easy class!
AWESOME! Keeps you awake at 8am is crazy and fun and interesting. 3 Tests and a lot of quizes, super easy class. Take Kent crazy, fun and easy!!
He is an entertaining guy and you can tell he really enjoys what he is teaching. There are some quizzes on the reading about twice a week. the tests are not hard if you put in any effort to study.
It's super easy, just go to class, and participate. He gives you all the questions and answers to everything he ever grades. So just be there to get the answers, memorize them, and you'll have an A. SO GREAT!
Dr. Kent is a very energetic teacher. He loves what he teaches and is really helpful. There are only 3 tests and he basically gives you the answers in his study guide. If you have questions on the study guide he has tons of review sessions before the tests. The quizzes are real easy if you just skim the reading.
The class is ALL notes. Copy everything he writes on the board. He always has review questions which come straight from the test, so if you memorize all the answers to the questions, you're guaranteed an A on the test. The quizzes are EASY because you don't have to understand what you're reading. Basically, it's the easiest class I've ever taken.
Dr.Kent is extremely entertaining. I learn a lot from his class without much effort. His tests and quizzes are easy too as long as you go to class and do the review questions. Great professor!
Dr. Kent is an awesome professor! He gives you study guide questions throughout each unit and the test questions come directly from the review questions. Also, he holds 5 review sessions outside of regular class. Also, there are daily quizzes which are super easy if you do the readings; I got 100% on each quiz.
Dr. Kent is an amazing professor! Philosophy is crystal clear when he explains it. He also keeps you awake. His little quizzes are extremely easy and his exams are also very easy. He gives you exact questions to look at before the tests. You learn so much with little effort and he's an easy A! He actually inspired me to minor in philosophy!
Kent is very into Philosophy, but he is kind of in his own world. No surprise he is Catholic oriented.. a lot. Quizzes are simple, but his exams are wacky and he will take.1 and .2 off tests. He cares a lot, give him credit, but I was slightly terrified by him, yet he is kinda funny
PROs: Organized, very clear, tries hard and makes sure everyone understands everything, great review sessions, do the study guides! very helpful. Funny laugh :) gets excited. CONs: Gets dry and times but for the most part keeps it interesting. Remember dates that's the only thing I lost points on. 5 point quizzes are simple but confused me.
Dr. Kent is a very different and entertaining. He is very into philosophy. Took him over J-term and he is the only reason I was able to pay attention for 3 hours a day. 4 Tests VERY easy if you just go to class and pay a little bit of attention.
No philosophy class is going to be a walk in the park, but Kent makes philosophy MUCH easier to understand. He uses a lot of analogies to help you understand concepts. 3 tests, no final, study guides and review sessions for each test. Tests were okay, but would be hard if you didn't study. He is extremely helpful if you go into his office hours.
Easiest class I've ever taken. Hardly had to study for his 3 tests and I never got lower than a 98%. However, the one downside to him is that he is fairly opinionated.
Great professor with a ton of energy for the subject matter. The lectures could not have been more clear in my opinion. Would highly recommend Dr. Kent!
This teacher is very passionate about philosophy. He REALLY wants you to understand philosophy. Make sure to study for his tests, but otherwise I would highly recommend him!
Such a great guy! Class was very awkward at times, no discussions, all lecture. Copy down ALL his notes from the board, tests come directly from the study guide... DO IT!! recommend.
Great Professor. Really passionate about philosophy. Exams are not hard at all if you study. Extremely easy quizzes if you put in the effort when reading the assigned text. Overall, learned a lot.
Dr. Kent is a straight up stallion. I loved going to all of his classes, and he is always super excited to teach the material. He is clear, and tests come straight from his review questions. My best professor my first semester.
Kent is a little weird, but still a good prof. Random quizzes on the material but if you take the time to do the reading, they should be easy. Tests come straight from the notes.
Great teacher and is really passionate about Philosophy. He is kind of a weird guy, but is very helpful and wants to make sure you understand what he is teaching. Tests come straight from the lectures he gives. Go to the review sessions for the exams, they are really helpful.
Kent is hilarious. He's always super energetic and is very similar to me when I've had too much caffeine. He's super helpful and understanding if you miss a class or 2 because you're sick!
Kent is extremely energetic and loves philosophy. Easy quizzes every other class if you read. Tests kind of hard.
Super nice guy. Really works hard to make sure students learn the material. The tests are a piece of cake if you do and study the review questions.
He absolutely loves Philosophy! He gets very into his lectures and is really engaging to listen to. Quizzes on readings are extremely easy if you've done the reading. Tests are based on lectures and are not too hard. Overall, I thought he was a great professor!
Great teacher, super energetic and helpful if you miss class. Willing to do anything for you to make up stuff! Great guy, great class!
Super quirky and passionate professor. Two exams and final come straight from his review questions he emails daily, which are up to you to fill out or not (I would definitely do progressively!). Make sure you know the review quiz questions and tests are a breeze. If you skim the random readings, your guaranteed 100% on the very few T/F quizzes.
Dr. Kent is the nicest man ever. He is willing to meet you anytime, even outside of his office hours, to help you understand the material. If you do the readings, you are guaranteed a 100% on the few quizes he has on the readings. If you take good notes, and study them, you should get an easy A.
One of the Greatest prof i've had in st thomas. Very enthusiastic. He is very passionate about phil. Quizzes are extremely easy if you read the chapters assigned. Awkwardly funny laugh
Dr Kent is such a great prof! Pop quizzes on assigned readings but never more than 10 pages a night. 2 exams and 1 final. Exams are multiple choice. Holds review sessions for exams. He's a great guy who is more than willing to help students learn! If you take notes, do the readings, do the review packets and show up you'll get an A. EASY!!!
Difficult exams, really confusing professor
I do not recommend him for any class. exams are hard
Philosophy is such an abstract science, it only makes sense for a guy like Kent to teach it. He's a strange dude but he teaches in a pretty efficient manner and uses good metaphors to help you relate the material. Very energetic about the class, you can tell he loves his job. Funny guy, would recommend
Dont take him. pop quiz, hard to follow difficult exams. 3 exams with is 95% of the class. and 5% for the pop quizes.
He really knows what he is talking about and is really excited to help you learn the material. His class is just him lecturing, but he makes it work. Just read the assignments and the pop quiz's are super easy. He makes taking notes really easy by only writing important info on the board. Still kind of a tough class, but if you try a little its e-z
Highly suggest taking this class. Can get boring but as long as you take notes in classdo the study guides before tests, it is an easy A. He does not assign papers to his 115 class. He's extremely quirky and excited about what he teaches which makes it interesting!
Dr. Kent is simply a great professor. I have never been more engaged by a class, and I did not have any interest in philosophy until taking this class. Now I'm considering a PHIL minor. If you pay attention and try, you will learn so much in this class and you will do well. I wouldn't even hesitate to take another one of Dr. Kent's classes.
Dr. Kent is hilarious, but his lectures gets long. Reading assignments and pop quizzes, which are easy if you read your assignments. 2 exams and a final. Exams are hard, but he wants you to do good, so if you pay attention in class it's not that bad.
Very dull class. Only uses tests for grades.
Super funny and makes the class easy. Tests are pretty much the study guide. Memorize that.
Dr. Kent is a hoot! He's very passionate about the subject of Philosophy, and wants his students to do well. If you pay attention in class, take good notes, and prepare the study guide for the exams you should have no problem getting an A in the class.
I would like to thank Dr. Kent for his second-rate Theology course, I really liked his rhetoric for the Christan God exists is as good as proving the Greek Gods exists. The amount of stuff he covers in class is about as much clothing as a stripper wears, compared to the review. I would rather read all the twilight books than to take this course ;^)
I loved having Dr. Kent. Tests were hard. I've noticed people seem to not like him because he talks about St. Thomas Aquinas' proof of the existence of A GOD. He does NOT talk about "the Christian God" as people seem to think. Dr Kent is extremely kind and encourages you to talk to him about Philosophy outside of class. Take good notes
This class was BEYOND boring. Boring to listen to and the material is very dull. But, the class was an easy A. Just show up to class, take the notes on the board, do a little studying before the exam, and you'll get an A. Barely any reading.
He was a good professor. He really loved philosophy and tried to share his passion with his students. As long as we studied from the review sheets, we were fine. His extra review sessions were extremely helpful.
Very enthusiastic about what he does. Study guides are essentially word for word on the test.
Really likes what he does. 3 tests (multiple choice) & lots of reading. Don't need to read but it helps with quizzes. Lectures are boring but he has lots of energy. Understand the study guides & you'll pass.
Dr. Kent was the best teacher I've ever had as far as his delivery goes. I wasn't very interested in the material, but he keeps everything crystal clear. He's quirky, but by the end of the semester, you love it. Only grading is on three multiple choice tests with study guides and sessions, so if you bunker down for 3 hours, easy A.
Very passionate about philosophy but doesn't have many people skills. Pretty confusing, doesn't really answer your questions. Basically you'll need to memorized 15-20 pages of poorly worded study guides for every test.
He is a pretty great prof. Has a GREAT laugh but study your notes because everything is on the tests
Kent is a super nice guy and is super passionate about philosophy. He gives out review guides for the upcoming test. They are so similar but make sure to study as you go because they are about 20 pages. Has about ten pop quizzes through the course of the year. Lectures can sometimes get boring but there is really only reading for hw.
Kent is awesome! He's hilarious and has the best laugh I've ever heard. Lecture can get long sometimes but he makes everything very clear and understandable. He literally writes everything you need to know down on the white board, so that makes it super easy.
Dr. Kent is a very unique individual that is extremely passionate about philosophy and teaching. He wants his students to succeed, that being said, the exams and reading quizzes are easy if you simply do the work. Three exams based on long study guides, but the study guides are practically the exam questions. Overall, he is a very funny guy.
Easy class if you are good at memorizing. Show up to class and write down the notes and you will be good. He gives long, detailed study guides before the exams that go along with your notes so if you just look them over before the test, this class should be an easy A. Tests make up all of your grade with short T/F reading quizzes making up 5%.
All you have to do is go to class take notes of what he's saying which he put on the board and memorize the study guide that he gives and you will get an A. Skim the readings he gives to read outside of class and you're good for the pop quizzes which he gives out a lot of. Easy class and great professor! But you do have to show up and semi listen.
TAKE HIM! A bit quirky, but an overall great prof. He gives extensive study guides, so as long as you compare it with your notes and study, you will do good on the tests. He gives a few pop quizzes, but the questions are very generic, so if you skim the reading then you are fine. Highly recommend.
Dr. Kent is a quirky guy who is VERY excited by philosophy. His class is pretty easy, usually just a few pages of reading before each class out of a small textbook. No papers, and 3 tests with long study guides that are nearly the same as the tests. Lectures can get boring, he will spend 2-3 days on one topic, but you'll understand the topic well
Dr. Kent is an ok professor, but is awkward and his lectures are long and boring. He makes you come to class by having random quizzes. His tests are difficult because they are like 12 pages long and wording isn't clear. He has study guides but they are 24 pages long and take forever to do. I would not recommend unless your good at memorizing.
Great professor, make sure you do the daily readings he will give pop quizzes on it through the semester. You take three noncumulative tests through semester two of those are the midterm and final.
Kent was super caring and put so much effort into all his lectures and study guides. Tests were super easy and Quizzes were insanely easy. Honestly one of the best professors I've ever had and I went to Normandale where everyone was chill. Do yourself a favor and take this dude.
Back when I took ol Kent's class he had philosophically proven that something happened to create the universe. He also released a nice little manifesto along with his final test's study guide. He made sure to include things like a woman's right to her body and homosexuality as the big moral problems with our generation. UST delivers once again!
No papers only 3 exams. Hes so silly I love him
Dr. Kent loves philosophy! Every class there is a lecture and a possibility of a pop quiz from the previous reading assignment, but they are usually pretty easy if you did the reading. There are a total of 3 tests, and the final is not cumulative. They are easy if you work on/study the review he provides. He loves to ramble though, so hang in there
Dr. Kent was a very nice man, and you can tell he loves what he does. I may not have enjoyed his teaching methods very much, but he really cares about his students and you got to give him credit for that. Study guides are long, graded by 3 exams and a few pop quizzes.
If you don't know anything about Philosophy prior to this course do not take his class. His lectures are very confusing. Very nice guy and very passionate about philosophy. Just very confusing.
Dr. Kent is a great professor and is evidently very passionate about philosophy. Sometimes during lectures he gets so excited he has to slow himself down, but he gives a ton of examples during his lectures that are easy to follow and easy to relate to. He wants his students to understand the content and cares about them a lot! Do the review sheets!
He is super intelligent, and is more than happy to discuss what ur having trouble with. He gives out a complete study guide that is anywhere from 15-25 pages long. If you can MEMORIZE the WHOLE STUDY GUIDE then you'll get 100% on every test. The test is word for word what the study guide says. I wasn't able to memorize but if your solid, your good!
Philosophy is hard. Kent is a great person but his class is hard and he will lecture for 90 minutes straight. His tests are hard even if you complete the 28-page study guide.
He is very excited about philosophy. He speaks fast so class requires a lot of attention. He has weekly quizzes about topics you read before class and then covers those topics after the quiz. He only gives a fews tests but has very long study guides and puts the answers to most questions on the study guide. If you do your hw, his class is an easy A
Dr. Kent is an awesome person and very devout Catholic. Tests are easy if you take notes and review the study guides. Lectures are not very engaging, however.
Great Prof. He really wants you to succeed and understand the material. Overall great guy.
Be prepared to listen to a lot of lectures. Dr. Kent is very excited about philosophy and he definitely has a lot of energy when lecturing. The subject, however, is still boring. Dr. Kent does an excellent job of preparing you for his tests. If you take good notes and do the review questions, you should have no problem doing well in this class.
Dr. Kent brings energy and passion to a very dry subject. I took a Tue/Thur so the lectures were pretty long and at times tough to get through. However, he does a good job of relating the material back to the real world. Be ready to read as there is a reading quiz assigned to each class session.
While philosophy can be a difficult subject, professor Kent makes it easy. He is a great teacher and his lectures are easy to understand as he is very clear. While the class is a little test heavy, he has a review guide which if you do it you will have no problems getting an A on every test.
Three tests take up the entire grading structure. For each test, you are given a 26-page study guide. If you are not good at memorizing you will not do good. If you are then this class will be easy.
Very easy professor- just take notes and expect to do a lot of memorization.
I did well, but I could not recommend him less. He made me incredibly uncomfortable with wordings and examples. Challenging in the way that you feel belittled for thinking differently. He phrases opinions in a way that come across as facts, if you disagree, you're wrong. Explains things throughly, but made me uncomfortable. glad it was online.
He is all over the place when giving lectures. It's so hard to keep up and follow along. Tests aren't super hard, but they are worth so much of your grade. Three tests make up your grade. Lots of studying and reading. He gives reading quizzes randomly so make sure you actually read everyday.
Dr. Kent made the class entertaining, but that's it. We read about 20 pages of a 200 or so paged textbook, and we covered little material. The class will get you credits, but not teach much about the topic. I wasted my time with this class.
Tests are so complicated. Rambles a lot and there is no interaction with the class. Very hard to follow at times. Philosophy is a hard topic in general and he did not make it easy to understand
Dr. Kent is a great professor who provides engaging lectures on a subject matter that many will not be studying again. His lectures are filled with examples that make philosophy easier to understand.
Great Professor, makes content very clear and cares about students doing well. Very flexible and kind, class was extremely manageable.
Overall, Professor Kent is a really nice guy and cares about his students, however sometimes lectures and readings can be hard to follow, as the topics skip around a lot. Quizzes are easy, Exams aren't too bad, but the study guides are about 20 pages long-- lots of memorization. Can be pretty boring if you're not into philosophy.
This is not the most engaging class content wise- but Kent makes the lectures fun despite the length. Tests are worth a LOT of your grade (around 30% each) but will go well for you if you use the study guide he provides. Text is cheap for this class as well, and readings have short quizzes to keep you engaged. Definitely recommend!
I LOVED Dr. Kent. He is definitely not for everyone though. He doesn't use slides, he writes on the board with a marker and is incredibly intelligent in his field. I found the class to be super engaging. The only thing is that there are three exams that total 90% of your overall grade, so if you are not a good test taker, don't take his class.
Dr. Kent is genuinely one of the best and funniest professors at St. Thomas. He is so passionate about the subject. He gives 2 weekly quizzes, 3 exams, and reading before class starts. The only difficult thing is the exams because it's 50 multiple choice. Other than that, I recommend his class; he is very caring and understanding with his students.
Dr. Kent is def one of my favorite professors I've taken being at St. Thomas. He's very quirky and funny, but extremely passionate about his course and subject. Tests are multiple choice on a scan tron and he puts together a study with pretty much the answers to the test on it. Tests are not terrible as long as you study. Great professor!
Dr. Kent is an amazing professor who will answer your questions and make himself available. Puts in a lot of effort to make the course material enjoyable.
Dr. Kent really tries to make philosophy interesting even though it can be boring at times. He is such a nice guy and I really enjoyed taking his class. Participation in class does not effect your grade and exams are multiple choice. He makes a study guide for all of the exams, and if it's not on the study guide, it won't be on the exam.
best teacher ever! just be ready to study the lengthy study guides, he is very passionate and smart. homework load is little. he is very sweet and cares about his students
Professor Kent's philosophy class may not be the most engaging, but his passion and care for students make up for it. The lengthy study guides are a must, but with the help of tools like Unstuck ai, you can ace the exams. Overall, a solid choice for an intro philosophy credit.
