Professor Kuefler is very nice and patient.
Best class I've ever taken!! Highly recommended!!
History 503B
fun class; interesting readings; papers, not tests; easy grader
Don't listen to these other people this man is a very picky grader
Great class. Lots of reading and writing. He is always willing to help.
3 books, 3 long essays, 3 written exams-select y topics carefully
3 boring and long books, hard tests and wants perfect essays
Lots of reading & 3 essays; Too picky on grammar; Gets Impatient & leaves
Hard, boring and and useless class/teacher. Take something else!!!

VERY BAD teacher!!! STAY AWAY!!! VERY BORING! If you want to read the whole history book take the class, he doesn't teach you anything.
3 essays, 12 weekly quizzes, drops 2, attendance optional and lectures have no bearing on anything
HORRIBLE CLASS AND HORRIBLE TEACHER. I HATED THIS CLASS. SAVE YOURSELF AND TAKE SOMETHIONG ELSE
Hard but fair and helpful. Fascinating range of topics.
Don't do it, just run!!!!!!!
Has a wealth of knowlege. Uses primary sources but only makes you read sections rather than the whole book. Lectures are topical and he allows some leeway on the topics. Great Guy and one of my favorite professors.
This man has a wealth of knowledge to give his students. He is entertaining and genuine joy to work with. As my graduate chair I think I could not have chosen a more brilliant man to work with to complete my study of history
Don't take this class unless you want to work your tail off only to be rewarded with a bad grade. He expects way to much for an undergraduate class. Take the class with someone else or take a different class. RUN, while you still have the chance!!!!!
Matt is one of the most challenging teachers you will ever have. If you are in school just for easy grades stay away. However, if you realy want to learn and grow as a student Matt will push you to be your best...like a football coach for your mind!
after reading some previous reviews I was a bit scared to take him - but he was actually a great teacher. Very helpful, easy to talk to, and incredibly knowledgeable on the subject. Dr. kuefler was on of my favorite teachers at SDSU!
He is very interesting and informative. Very easy class if you read the assignments. Primary sources are long but interesting for the most part. Only quizzes on primary docs and 3 major papers. He's also very leniant with deadlines. Take him if you don't want to work a lot.
His lectures are not on the test. His book choices are not on the test. What does he test on, good question, because none of it is on the test-administration needs to take a closer look at this guy to find out what he is doing. Good luck if you take him.
Boring class, just do the readings and three essays and you are fine. You don't really even need to go to class. If you do bad on one essay you can hand in another one and he will drop your lowest. Not bad ,but great.
Loved him. He knows his stuff! His lectures are fun but be warned... he is a tough grader. I can say this... I am a much better student after taking his class. He pushes you to write at a superior level but is very helpful and genuinely wants you to get a good grade.
Dont ever take this ****ing class, piece of**** readings, out of class time films and lectures that are 3 hour long that you MUST attend and stay there the whole time, stupid grading scale..exams are worth only 5%...waste of time for****ty grade!
Lectures are ok, Prof. lets TA's do most of the grading, and they are anal. 3 Book reports worth only 5% of grade which HAVE to be completed. Three additional 3hr films that have to be watched till the end. Not worth the time, seriously, find another class to take. -Anonymous premed student
If you cannot manage to show up to a lecture or read 3 books do not take the class (or maybe you shouldn't be at a university)...otherwise if you actually show up to class/discussion sessions and take advantage of the free points he gives out you should be able to easily ace the midterms/finals.
Lectures arn't to bad their a bit long winded and boring and he does stress homosexuality throughout history. This class involves more work than a 500 level class the work itself isn't all too hard, theres just alot of it. With anal TA's grading your papers, the tests were easy and he gave you 25% free on each test. He also makes you go to movies

I would not recommend this class to anyone! The readings are long (3 novels/500+pages each), tiresome and BORING! He doesnt even grade the papers you write, and lets TA's grade them, which is half assed grading for the amount of time writing the 3 papers! Class is a total joke! Don't waste your money/life/time. MANDATORY ATTENDANCE!!!!!!
The class is very interesting. He gets through a lot of history in a lot of time. There isn't too much work and the discussions sections are great.
This class was hard! I didn't think the book had anything to do with the lectures. I was bored out of my mind most of the time and struggled to stay awake while reading the book. You have to write two 7 page essays on books you choose to review during the semester. LOTS of reading...the tests aren't that bad as long as you memorize the key terms.
This class was difficult, but I really learned a lot! Assignments were: two book reviews seven pages in length (on books that were only 100-200 pages), one mid-term and a final. I enjoyed the class but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is a lazy retard.
worst teacher ever. Terrible grader. Boring lectures. No point, to notetaking because there were no tests. No one in the class liked it. Made an ok subject horrible to sit through. Seemed like he was abusing his power as a teacher because he had to deal with being a nerd his whole life. go back to Yale, and leave us alone. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS
Good Professor with a deep knowledge of the subject. He covered all the bases when teaching this, and if you find the study of sexuality interesting and are mature enough to deal with the vast content, you'll enjoy it. Lectures are fast paced, but he recaps well. Tests were easy assuming you study and read the book, the book reports are a chore.
This class was NOT INTERESTING AT ALL. I wasn't motivated to come to class at all and the i thought the professor was RUDE. He grades you on your papers like you're in ENGLISH class when indeed you're not. His tests are all essay and his powerpoints DON'T give you any idea what to study for when it comes to his tests. I DONT RECOMMEND!!
I'm not going to lie, this class wasn't as exciting as I hoped it would be. Professor Kuefler is not the most interesting professor in the world, but he is still effective. If you are a wound up frat boy that can't deal with your latent homosexuality, then a class in the history of sexuality IS NOT FOR YOU.
This class does require a fair amount of writing. The comments bemoaning the fact that he grades his papers like English papers are ridiculous. You should expect to have to be a decent writer if you're taking 400+ history courses. Kuefler is not a great lecturer, but when it comes to historic writing he knows his stuff and you can learn from him.
Taking the class right now. Weekly online quizzes based off of lecture so you can't miss class. Powerpoints are useless for the quizzes, so you have to take very detailed notes just off what he spontaneously talks about. Weekly reflections on at least 10 excerpts, each one being at least 150 words. Critical grader. WAY TOO MUCH WORK!
RIDICULOUS. Took this class to fulfill sdsu's requirement of "exploration." thought this would be easy & interesting, boy was I wrong. Each week there is a chapter reflection in which you must respond to about 10-15 passages from the text, 150 words minimum for each passage. This is equivalent to a 2000 words essay & theres also a quiz every week
This class should have been interesting but the assignments sucked all of my interest and, more importantly, time. As previously stated, 15-20 passages a week, 150 words each. Time suck! Was originally to be taught by Nobiletti but changed a week before classes started. Didn't realize the work load was so huge! Do not take this class with him!!
You have been warned by other raters, this class is not a cakewalk. I agree with one rater who said they devoted more time to this class than all the others combined. That I got a B- is also a miracle in itself. He has an air about him that comes off as egotistical but I don't know if that's true or not. Take only if you have loads of free time.
If you dont take ridiculously detailed notes in class, you will NOT pass the weekly online quizzes. 12-15 analytical paragraphs of at least 150 words EACH due EVERY week. One week we had to do 24!!! I spent more time on this class than all my other classes combined. Critical grader. Basically 4 page, single spaced papers due a week. NIGHTMARE CLASS
This is the worst class I have taken in my entire career as a student. The quizzes are impossible and on top he mumbles his speech the whole time so its hard to take good notes. He makes you watch a movie on female genital mutilation and tests you on it. If that's you're thing then go for it but I don't think this class could have been any worse.
His class is hard, but not impossible. It was a lot of work though. Like most have said it's 150 words per excerpt and there's between 10-20 excerpts every week plus a timed 10quest quiz. The class is powerpoint/lecture based. You must come to class every M/W but Fs are optional. Take good notes and do all of the writings, and you should do well!
He is among the most accomplished professors in our department and has a true interest in his students. If you are not used to high expectations than find someone els. If you actuallly want to learn something with substance than take him. He is understanding and willing to work with you if you have a serious problem. Wrote a great letter for me.
This is not a history class, but an English class. The only thing he grades you on is grammar, even when he makes many errors in the handouts. If you make a few mistakes you get a B. This is especially frustrating when you are forced to grade your classmates' papers and they have tons of errors in them. Be prepared to spend tens of hours grading.
Kuefler wants grammar to be perfect on your essays, it seems more like an english class than a history course. He is fair when grading, I was a graduate student in his class. He gave the option of a a large research paper or 4 reviews of scholarly books plus a essay paper. I did well in his class, if you want a good grade you have to do the work.
Last year I posted a review lamenting Dr. Kuefler's teaching methods. Now I have praise for his style of teaching. Yes he is a strict grader and does focus strongly on grammer, but he is extremely helpful & approachable during office hours. Take advantage of that & apply his hints to your next paper and you should do fine in his class.
I hated him. He was truly one of the worst professors I've ever experienced at SDSU. Avoid him at all costs.
One of my all-time favorite classes! Some reviewers apparently do not appreciate his teaching style, and/or seemingly harsh grading methods, I have suspicion that they simply failed to recognize that these are upper-division courses, being taught by an accomplished historian. Definitely taking Dr. K. again.
Poor communicator.Lectures in a very dull way using clips from dated, uninteresting films. Participation makes up 24% of the overall grade for the class yet Kuefler provides no focus for discussion merely asking the class for "thoughts".Kuefler has also accused a student of using their phone in class when they were not and didn't admit his error.
Extremely dull class. Discussion has no direction, particularly irritating as discussion accounts for 24%. Subject matter is minimal, feels like Kuefler is stretching the limited material to fit timeframe. Advertised as history class but there are few historical sources used, just low quality films.
This was my first class with Dr. Kuefler and i absolutely LOVED it and his teaching. He wants the best for his students and is very helpful. Go to his office hours if you need help or even just to chat, he's very friendly! Obviously he's going to expect a lot from his students because 1. this is college and 2. there's no need for a second answer.
DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES. I loath this professor.
He is a terrible professor. He treats you like you are in second grade, calls you out if you have your phone out, and grades you as if you're in an english class rather than a history class. If you do not cite your sources correctly or even put a comma where its supposed to go, he fails you. He was most likely a loser in high school and still is.
Class was boring and didn't make me particularly excited about ancient history. However, it was easy to pass because there were no tests or anything. Just 100-word "wikis" and online quizzes that are literally impossible to fail.
I don't know why he has low reviews!? Turns out I ended up enjoying class. Lectures the whole class period, no need to take notes, Two essay is all you have to do for the whole semester from your choice of 5 books. (essays based off of two books of your choosing) Fair grader. Super nice guy. Highly recommend. will gladly help you if needed.
Definitely not an easy professor, but wants his students to succeed. Probably the smartest professor I have had at SDSU, clearly passionate about history. If you put in the effort, he offers to proofread essays and help with understanding of the content. If you need to take upper division HIST would definitely recommend
He does not teach. His instructions are not clear and often they contradict themselves. Do not, under any circumstances, take this class. It is more work than what it is worth, and even if you try hard, it still won't help your grade as much as you think. The professor has boat loads of character flaws to say the least.
I like that it's mostly online but he makes this class way more confusing than it has to be. He is inconsistent with his grading. My friend and I worked on everything together but we got completely different grades every time even though they were almost the same. This class is mostly just frustrating and I feel bad for people being graded unfairly
My first impression was that he was a nice guy. I took this class during my study abroad; lectures while in Spain and assignments due after we returned home. I quickly realized that he is a VERY harsh grader and cares a LOT about spelling/grammar/proper citations. Definitely a class that requires work. Lecture notes mandatory. I had to work HARD
EASIEST CLASS IVE EVER TAKEN AT STATE. He gives a lot of work but it is easy and doable. He is also a tough grader which got annoying. I think I showed up to this class about 4 times out of the semester and still received a good grade. Take this class!!!! Super easy
The way this professor grades is completely random. He will not give you full credit for any assignment. His instructions are never clear. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
I took Kuefler for Fall of the Roman Empire and this was my biggest mistake at SDSU. Kuefler is incredibly boring and has an odd pitch that goes up and down as he speaks. He's incredibly inconsistent on the use of laptops and told me to put mine away while allowing other students to have their's. There's a fifteen page paper at the end. Do not take
Teacher was very knowledgeable about what he was teaching, but was bad at teaching it. All the learning we did was through the extensive homework we received which was graded surprisingly tough. It's not a credit or no credit deal. At least we didn't get any in class exams or quizzes with the exception of a very easy 10 point map quiz early on.
I took professor Kuefler for a history through film class, and he made us look the films outside of class, which was odd. We had to make posts on a discussion board, and that was practically it; his lectures were boring, but the class was easy.
Matthew knows a lot about history, but he's absolutely awful at teaching (& no I will not refer to him as Dr. b/c he isn't deserving). His voice cracks and inflects often and it's super distracting. He lacks the ability to successfully convey material to his students and he doesn't answer questions in a way to help you. 350 isn't enough don't take!
Just pay attention in class and participate in group discussion. The course is a good overview of Late Antiquity. Three papers, make sure you sharpen up on Chicago style citations but the course is easy.
Such a fun and interesting class! Grade was made up of research assignments and showing up to class. Lectures were very informative and interesting. No quizzes or tests, just projects that were actually fun to research. Very interesting subject matter, highly recommend.
Really great professor, however theres a lot of homework which is pretty much 100% of your grade. He was really understanding about covid and had flexible due dates with everything due at the end of the semester. No tests or quizzes, just weekly lectures with discussion breakouts. Attendance is mandatory with camera on the entire time.
Wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt since he made the deadlines on assignments flexible but he had too many assignments and then the lectures(attendance is big for him) rehashed info you'd get from readings you had to do anyway. I never understood what he marked down when grading things, and I left his class wishing I took something else.
Dont take!!! Run away! I took his class because I wanted to know more about the subject. His lectures consists of him talking for a long time with PowerPoint. He gives flexible times to turn in homework, however this comes at a cost. The cost is : tough grader. You could write a paper about 7 pages long with everything correct and get 5/15
WORST CLASS EVER! I highly recommend to NOT select this teacher for anything. He gives out an abundance of homework. With the amount of work you have to do for this class, you won't have time for your other classes. Multiple chapter readings, articles, long videos, and having to write paragraphs on all of it EACH WEEK. To sum it up: overwhelming.
the worst prof I've had this year. seems educated and passionate about the content he teaches, but highly unorganized, assigns so much work, and grades harshly. do not take this course with him unless you absolutely have to.
Dr Kuefler is clearly very knowledgeable about the subject material, and passionate about it. Due dates on papers are floating, which is a plus. The downside is his is an extremely difficult grader, and I found instructions for projects confusing, and never quite felt like I knew what was expected of me for them.
This professor is a fine human being who is passionate about this subject which is cool to see. That being said, he assigns SO MUCH WORK. This is the most work I have ever done for a GE AND he is a harsh grader. I know this class seems easy because it's gay class, but if you can, AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS.
This proff likes to lecture which isn't bad but just feels so long, he grades harshly and gives a TEDIOUS amount of work that has you feeling like you're behind in the class. the amount of work given has you feeling like you can only focus on this class and not the others you have. Don't take it just because you assume LGBT+ will be easy
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. IT WAS THE BIGGEST MISTAKE I HAVE MADE THE ENTIRE TIME I HAVE BEEN AT SDSU. WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD BY FAR. LECTURE HEAVY. BORING. SO MUCH TEDIOUS WORK. HARSH GRADER. DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This class gives a tedious amount of work, if anything you'll be trying to play catch up for the entirety of the semester. Grades harsh and doesn't give feedback at all, so do not take this if you'd think you would pass because it's a LGBT class - save yourself the stress, mentality and work of it all.
The amount of work given for this class is insane. This wouldn't be so bad if he wasn't such a harsh grader. Every week you are assigned about 50-100 pages of reading, with 3-8 discussion posts and a project on top of that, and a good chunk of those will receive a failing grade with no explanation as to why. DO NOT TAKE!!
Horrible horrible please run and don't take this class he is not aware his class is worth 3 units and makes life a living hell for his students. Don't take this class or anything he teaches he will make you miserable a shame he has the privilege to teach.
He doesn't accept late work, even if it's a few minutes/hours late. You'll get a zero! May not honor his word if he says you have an extension or don't have to do something because of personal/health reasons. Strict and very arbitrary grading. I received the lowest grade I've gotten in the dept. from him.
