really good guy, he enjoys what he's doing and truly wants you to understand. some of the class info is dry, but he uses art and music to keep it interesting. nice guy, very understanding and flexible.
Really hard to take notes off of and a lot of reading for his class...I think we had like 6 books. Tests wern't to hard.
Overall he is a REALLY nice guy and even though some lectures are boring he grades his test and papers very easily (he gives you the benefit of the doubt)
Really nice guy, always willing to help or clarify. A ton of reading, but he is a great guy, I would recommend him.
He's a really nice guy. Easy to talk to and always asks for questions (and actually answers them). Good teacher!
I liked him a lot, the class was easy for me. The tests are all essay tests, but he tells you what the questions will be.
Very good lectures. Knows his fields of history and always is creatively putting music and art to the course work along with other texts to broaden horizions. Overall great professor classes arent bad and tests are same as the rest of the dept. profs.
Nice guy, but an airhead. He goes off on tangents all the time and he plays WIERD british rock music from the 70s and 80s.
One of the best professors in a bad department...note taking from him can be difficult but he gives outlines. Tests are definitely doable. Dry material but he does his best to make lectures tolerable.
He is a very good teacher who knows what he's talking about.
Really nice guy. His tests were all essay and pretty easy. You don't really need to pay attention in class, but it is good to go!
He is a great teacher. Lectures can be a bit tough to listen to but hey its history. Tests are really easy, he really listens to your questions, and offers some extra credit. Not hard at all. GREAT TEACHER.
He's a nice guy, a fairly good professor. Kind of boring, plays odd music, and tends to think he's funnier then he really is... Lectures boring, tests easy, not quite the pain that some HIST profs are... take him!
Very nice prof, and is always willing to answer your questions, tests arent too bad even though they are essay. Lectures may be a little boring sometimes but he makes it fun with art and music. very awesome prof though
He is really nice, and gets really enthusiastic about the material. If you every have any questions you can always go to him for help! Not a bad choice for a teacher.
He's a really good professor. He knows what he's talking about and he's helpful. I definitely recommend taking him. Tests are written but aren't bad, he gives you the questions to study.
Django Reinhart and Lenny Riefensthal. After 3 years I still remember those 2 names from Nazi History class. I dont remember anything from my other class that semester.
I liked him as a professor. He made it understandable.
Very nice prof. Always willing to help and very understandable. Tests are all essay and theres alot of reading, a given w/ history. All in all I would take him again, learned alot and didn't kill ya to take him.
Very helpful and accessible. Cares about students and material. Reading load can be heavy, but classes overall border on easy because of the format of the class. Highly recommended.
The reading load is very heavy and you must know the chapters inside and out. If you do that and don't miss a day of class you will do good. Don't count on him helping you if you need it. If you miss a day he will not help you at all.
One of the better history profs. Class is boring as hell, but go. Tests are a pain in the ass, but if you can write a lot and appear to know what you are talking about, an A is not impossible. Highly Recomended!
He really knows his history. There is a lot of reading and the tests are essay but overall it is a good class and I learned a lot.
Some of the reading texts tend to be dull since the class is about research methods. Overall great teacher, helps you if you have any questions. No tests in this class, just essays and papers.
He's awesome! I really enjoyed his presentations in class how he got into the music/art side of history. He did an excellent job at making it all easy to relate to in everyday language, and i liked how he gave out the essay topics and terms a week before the exam so you know exactly what he's expecting unlike other profs!
Took it as a summer class. But a really nice guy who is willing to help you out. History can get long at times but he tried to make it as interesting as possible. Hands out good test review...would definitely take again.
Was a great professor if you need an A take him,Gives exam questions in advance and you have like ten topics to choose from, show up for class and just try to perticipate and you good.A lot of reading though but just show him you know what you are talking about.Would take him again.
He is a great teacher. Very helpful and very nice. Focuses on the humanities alittle too much, but he'll get into the political/military stuff too. Really knowledgable in subject material. I would highly recommend him.
As long as you take notes and listen in class this isnt that hard. He gives you the test questions a week ahead of time so you can prepare for the tests. I highly recommend taking this class with Lindaman. He is very smart and knows what he is talking about!
hes a decent professor for the western civ series. his lectures are scripted at times but he gives you exam essay questions/terms a week ahead of time and tells you how to write them.
Absolutely awesome teacher., take him if you have the chance. He's probably the smartest person I've ever met. He cares a ton about the subject, and also about the students taking his class. He gives you the test questions a week in advance which is awesome. The nicest and best teacher I've had at WSU.
Despite his enthusiasm and knowledge he does a poor job of teaching his students or communicating his expectations to them. After each test there is a long line of students outside his office attempting to appeal their test grade because he failed to get across what he was looking for. Talking to him in his office leads to endless random tangents.
He is a very nice guy, and pretty easy to understand. I felt that he expected way to much out of his students (assigning 60-100 pages per night) but as long as you read something and had a point or idea to discuss in class, it was okay.
I love Professor Lindaman! I only had him for Orientation, but it was probably one of my best classes ever! I will definately take him in a another class if I get a chance. Great guy!
Knowledgeable professor and very nice. Lots to read and the essay tests are challenging but you will learn a lot from the class.
A great summer class. I put quite a bit of work into the readings and learned a ton! Very fascinating topics. Lindaman does a great job in setting up the material. I would definitely recommend.
Overall really knows the topic and gives good info. His lack of clarity in explaining the lectures is made up by the fact that he gives you the test questions in advance. Doing the readings definitely helps, but I missed a few and it was not a huge detriment to my grade. Tip on test essays: The longer, the better!
He lectures, you take notes. Essay test.
Lindaman is my favorite professor. I was skeptical of this course, as history isn't my forte. He lectures, you take notes. He's very thorough & knowledgeable about his lessons. He enjoys asking & answering questions, as well. We have 4 different essay tests for which we get the terms list and essay prompts a week ahead of time. I'm getting an A!
He's one of the best history teachers I've had. The class involves a lot of reading and lecture, but the required reading isn't dry. He's also very helpful and informed, his class drove me to a history minor just because it was fun and interesting.
Way too much work for a 100 level university study. Have to read the textbook, take a ton of notes, and watch powerpoints on d2l. 3 essays that are practically impossible to get full credit on and 3 multiple choice tests with ridiculous in depth questions. Make sure to read the book the semester before so you can get an A.
Expected way too much. A lot of reading, no homework, no review, barely passed the tests.
Great class and super nice professor. He is very clear on expectations.
He knows his stuff and gives you the test questions in advance, unfortunately he doesn't teach on them you have to look them up yourself, his teaching is unrelated.
Dr. Lindaman is the way to go! He's a wonderful teacher and a kind man.
I very much disliked this class. He doesn't give any homework so it's hard to retain the information from lecture. He uses absolutely no Power Points or any sort of visual aids. He does put some notes on the whiteboard, but he never follows it so it doesn't do any good. I would not take this class again. BORING. DREADED GOING.
Great professor for Western Civilization. Do the work and you will learn a ton.
Towards the beginning of the class, it seemed to me that he focused on art a bit too much. I'm not saying that's bad, as art is a great way to see how the people felt during a period in history, but I felt it overshadowed some of the bigger events. It did get better as it went on, and overall I felt it was an enjoyable class with a great professor!
Lectures are boring and hard to pay attention to.
This was a very good course for humanities credit. The professor is interesting and uses music and art to show historical context. Do the work and you will learn a ton.
Dr. Lindaman seems to connect well with his students. This class had a good balance of lecture, homework and group work. Manageable amount of reading and very good lectures that are informative and hold your attention. I would definitely take another class with him.
I thought this would be an easy class to get an A in, but I was wrong. This professor is not good at presenting and often talks about things that are not on the tests. He grades hard on the tests which are mostly short answers and essays. He also doesn't put grades up so good luck on knowing what your grade is going to be.
I thought this class was going to be a lot easier but he goes on long tangents and talks about one thing just to remind him of another. Notes are impossible to take. Also, don't plan on ever emailing him because he will not email you back. Very bad communication and tests are ridiculous. It is often content that we covered for 3 minutes in class.
Dr. Lindaman is an incredibly smart person. He has extensive knowledge about history and is a good teacher. I took this class just for the purpose of fulfilling a goal, so I was not as engaged in it as my pre requisite classes. If you are taking history classes for your major, he is a good professor.
Dr. Lindaman is a wonderful professor who states large historical concepts concisely. Class if engaging with a mix of lecture/small group discussion and music/art references. He is accessible easily in office hours. If you pay attention and go to class you will do just fine.
Professor Lindaman is very knowledgeable. It was not difficult to stay engaged in his class. It was interesting bringing life and history to the environmental field through the lens of public/national parks. (Not many courses at WSU are able to have this interdisciplinary approach as wel). Expectations are laid out clearly and are not hard to meet.
If you put in the work and show up to class it is easy to be successful. I did not have much previous knowledge in history but this was a good first class to explore the field. I would take another one of his classes again!
Loved him. He provides you with everything you need to pass the tests. They are worth a lot of points but he gives you a good review guide so you can practice your answers. He is an awesome, interesting teacher. His tests are very easy if you take advantage of the review sheet. WATCH THE MODULES!!! he gives away test questions in them.
Lindaman's a great professor. He's laid back but very knowledgable. The way he lectures jumps around a bit between time periods and location, but it helps see the connection importance of history. Love the connection to modern art and music he uses to explain historical events. Take him if you are interested in history and want to learn more.
He is very boring. He expects you to come to class for an hour and a half, watch online lectures for every class that are up to an hour long as well AND read the book. He also grades attendance and was always late for class and tried to hold us over. He treats the class like a level 300.
He easily gets off topic and loves to do so. Loves to tell travel stories. Always, ALWAYS shows up late. But is an overall nice guy. Wants to make sure you do good and will help you out when needed. Lots of reading though. He'll learn your name and loves when people participate.
He is a really nice guy. Some of his grading criteria is unclear but otherwise he is awesome.
He genuinely cares about his students doing well. He takes the time to learn your name and if you take more classes with him as I did you will really get to know him and his quirks which is rewarding. But, he will also get to know you which often times can lead to him giving you the benefit of the doubt in most cases. He will go to bat for you.
Lindaman was my most frustrating professor, but the class wasn't hard. Most of the studying was done independently. It was hard to get in contact with him outside of class, and he could be very vague and disorganized at times. He also didn't post grades on D2L, even the tests you take online. Otherwise he was a fine professor and made class fun.
I took this online due to COVID. The class was meant to be synchronous but days before the first class he changed his mind and made it asynchronous. The entire class was confused on every assignment. Assignment directions were more of a rambling, with no clear instructions. He graded very easily which is nice, only I feel ill prepared for teaching.
Professor Lindaman was the best. He genuinely cares about his students and he is always willing and available to help. There is a lot of reading but he basically tells you what will be on tests. Very smart guy too. Would take again!
He makes you redo a lot of work, it's just ridiculous. If you don't write it in a certain way he won't take it. If you mess up on one question he'll try to make you redo that one question to get full credit or otherwise he'll give you half credit. His online class is very unorganized and I was confused about what was due. Annoying For a goal class.
He doesn't teach you anything. All we do is read articles and respond to questions. We also have to read the chapters out of the book and write an essay on that. He doesn't post lectures or anything like that so you don't even know what you're supposed to know (especially exams). His D2L page isn't even updated from last year. Isn't clear on stuff!
Very nice, very cool, very easy course. He is very relaxed and loves history and just having casual discussions with students. If you email him, you will either get a response the day it was sent or will never answer, so ask in class as much as possible. Very good advice on what classes and professors to take and avoid. Overall really great guy!
Very unorganized and hard to reach. Doesnt even have any office hours, you can only email him. Tons of reading you have to do even tho this is only a 100 level class. He also doesnt upload grades so you have to email him for it. For an A you have to get a 93%, and a 82% for a B. Sometimes he wont understand ur questions or doesnt answer them
The amount of homework in this class is ridiculous for a 100 level class. During lecture he talks about random stuff out of order that doesn't make sense. He doesn't tell you what assignments you have & doesn't have due dates. He has never responded to any of my emails and I have no idea what my grade in this class is.
This course is very well organized and places an emphasis on thinking skills during the class time. The traditional lecture part is online and done on your own time. Do the different parts of the class and you will be well prepared for the tests. You also get many points for the in class history thinking activities. Strongly recommend.
Loved this class! If you just do the readings and all the assignments you should be able to get an A. There is a lot of reading (just like all history classes) but all you have to do is do it and you'll be fine. Professor Lindaman gives great feedback and you can tell he is extremely knowledgable about what he is teaching. Highly recommend!
This is a great online class option. The reading material is very interesting. Professor allows you to correct assignments so full credit can be gained pretty easily. An A is very obtainable as long as you simply do the assignments.
This professor acts like everyone in the class wants to be a historian. Most people take this as a goal class which I would not recommend. He goes off in class and tells stories that are irrelevant. You have to answer in-class questions with a reading, an essay writing prompt, and you have to watch a 50min lecture with questions every week.
This class is easy once you get the hang of how it is all set up. For each week you have to post to the discussion board, do in class questions, an essay prompt, and a lecture video with questions. There is a lot of work for this class, but if you do all of the work each week its an easy A. The tests are open note and pretty easy.
Horrible. About 2-3 homework assignment's per week that don't take long but he doesn't put grades into D2L just says things like "Good work" in the feedback for that particular assignment. Never, and I mean NEVER responds to emails, I've probably sent around 10-12 this semester and haven't received a reply on a single one of them.
HIST 122 is a basic history class yet there are two sets of questions, a few discussion posts, and at least one essay to write each week. His classwork is very overbearing and if you do not show up to class you will be behind in your work. If you think you can just reach out to him by email, you are wrong... good luck trying to get him to respond.
Weekly readings and assignments for most of the semester. As long as you get full points for those it'd be hard to not get a decent grade. Not always clear on instructions. Wish he gave more feedback on assignments but overall fairly easy course.
Grading criteria is never clear. Not regularly accessible via email. Gives confusing directions in person AND in print. Syllabus and D2L are confusing and circular. Feedback is not very helpful. If you struggle with vague answers or vague assignment directions, do not take. He does seem to care about students and is knowledgeable.
Took this for general education credit. It is a well organized class once you get into the pattern of the set up. The course materials are interesting and the professor wants you to show you have learned something and therefore will even allow re-submitted work to reach a higher grade.
I loved the course material in this environmental history course. I took it online. The professor includes a clear lecture tutorial which is a great overview of the course and explains what needs to be done. If you are willing to stay on task and complete the weekly work an A can be had.
I ended up dropping this class. Lindaman is very passionate but his class is unorganized and hard to understand. This class is easy once you get the hang of how it is all set up.Each week you have a discussion,in class questions,an essay prompt, and a lecture video with questions.A lot of work , but if you do all of the work each week its an easy A.
Professor Lindaman is awesome! He grades pretty easily as long as you simply do the homework. Kind of like a contract grading class! The readings are interesting and you can tell he is extremely knowledgable about what he is teaching. Great class!!
People don't realize that all you have to do to receive an A in this class is to just do the work! There is a lot of reading but they are all interesting and doable. Lindaman is very knowledgable which makes this class fun and intriguing. Just do the assignments each week and you'll be good! Online course is the same!
Lindaman is a GREAT professor. This was personally a very difficult course for me but he is always willing to discuss the material with you to help you understand. As long as you participate in the group discussions and do the readings, you'll do fine.
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH THIS PROF!!! I haven't been to his class in 2 months because he cancels it everyday. We also have only a few weeks left of class and there is NOTHING in the grade book. He is super unorganized and doesn't even teach.
Please, for the love of god, do not take a class with this man. His instructions don't make any sense and he doesn't respond to emails. He also cancels class more than he holds class and the readings don't ever make any sense. Save your sanity and don't take a class with Matthew Lindaman, if you can help it.
Dr. Lindaman's Western Civ class was honestly really easy if you understood how to manage your time and get everything done in a timely manner. If you are bad at time management and are a procrastinator do not take this course. There are a lot of assignments and things to do and it can be confusing what needs to be done. Slow at responding to email
He was a very confusing professor. I would ask him a question and its like he made it his mission to answer in the longest way possible without actually answering the question. Very confusing course set up too. Doesnt respond to emails
The class was very well organized and we were given credit for lecture modules and assignments that helped prepare for the tests. Do watch the course overview tutorial as it helps reveal the course organization. The four outside books we read were very interesting. Would highly recommend!
History of the American West was a great class. Lots of good course material. The professor was understanding in spacing out the reading assignments.
Professor Lindaman was great!!! If you want an A in this class you just have to do each assignment (they are quite simple). Anyone struggling with this class probably didn't watch his lectures or syllabus video that explains the course and due dates. Really nice and knowledgable guy. Will be taking more classes from him!!!
Outlines course expectations clearly on D2L. Even has extra credit. Was also very understanding with late work. Overall a very chill class and although there is more reading, they were all extremely interesting and I am glad I read them. Great prof.
Prof. Lindaman is a nice guy and you can tell he really understands and cares about what he is talking about. In my opinion, I think 85 percent of the class was busy work but most of all of it was online.
Late Grading. Bad at answering questions. Terrible at responding to emails. Left me out of class emails. Cancels class without notice. No organization. Mostly Videos. Would not recommend
Never replies to emails and you are required to read books constantly and write many papers.
Very knowledgeable guy. Class is easy to follow and the readings are super informative. Fun class.
He genuinely does not care about his classes or his students, he cannot be reached outside of class, will leave the classroom and expect everyone to just sit there and listen to the music he put on. Confusing lectures, strict syllabus, but incredibly easy grader. He's fine.
I took this class on-line. The format was easy to follow and the professor was helpful with questions. The readings were very interesting and there was a fun nature project as part of the grade.
This class had a lot of points based on participation in class and short writing reflections. These prepared you for the essay on the test. The class material was interesting and the professor was very helpful.
Dr. Lindaman is a great guy but as a professor, I hated this class. Its a hybrid class so its only one day a week which is hard because its hard to miss days of class. If you like history or know about it then this would be a good class. Overall, I wouldn't take another class with him though.
Every assignment is just reading, there's nothing else besides reading and answering questions. He hasn't graded a single thing yet. He doesn't answer emails. its so much busy work that consumes all your time. Don't take this if you think it will be an easy online filler. Its really difficult to know where you're at in the class with no grade.
Took HIST398 as a freshman first year and was ready heavy. If you're into history, the class will probably be enjoyable for you. Always emailed him questions and never got a response. Also, don't expect for him to use D2L. He'll email you everything, which was a pain. Also, his grading was super not clear and still unsure how he graded things.
Loved this class! All of the readings were very interesting. Easy to get an A as long as you complete your work. Professor was accessible outside of class and provided great feedback.
Professor provides great feedback and is accessible outside of class time. Lecture/readings are extremely interesting. I thought the reading were unique and taught me a lot. Easy class as long as you do the assignments.
Extremely understanding and knowledgable professor. Class was manageable and fun. My favorite history class I've taken yet. Highly recommend.
Great online class option! Assignments were extremely easy to follow and the professor is easy to reach/is understanding when tech issues happen. Loved all of the readings assigned because they were actually interesting unlike most history classes. Highly recommend!
Professor Lindaman was very knowledgable and passionate about this class! Highly recommend for anyone looking for a history credit. Online class was easy to follow. Can easily get an A if you keep up with the assignments.
This class is a great option for anyone looking for a history class that is equally fascinating as it is fun! Loved all the readings, I wish more classes were like this!
This online course was very easy to follow and Professor was always attentive to questions. Don't need to be a history whiz to do well in this class. Cant recommend enough!
Great online history class option. Loved this class. Professor Lindaman is passionate about the subject, cares about his students wellbeing, and was great to learn from.
Easy to get an A once you do the assignments. The syllabus is very clear and the professor is always willing to help. Great class.
Great class, loved this professor. Assignments are very doable and easy to complete. Professor is not a tough grader and is happy to help.
LOVED this class! The class topic itself was super intersting but the readings professor lindaman assigned were very informative and nice to read. Professor is avaible outside of class, will for sure be taking another class with him.
Great class! Readings were easy and informative. Cool class topic, you could tell Professor Lindaman was passionate about the subject and wanted students to be as well. Take this class if you can!!!
Syllabus is very clear and easy to follow. Great online class option if you want to get a good grade and learn a lot. Professor Lindaman was helpful and answered questions when they came up. Would take again.
Really enjoyed this class and professor Lindaman. Assignments are extremely doable and readings were informative. Would take it again if I could.
PROF LINDAMANS ARE THE BEST!!!!!!
My favorite class/professor so far!!! Tests were exactly like the assignments and Professor Lindaman was always available to help.
Overall great class. Learned a lot of new things but never felt like it was too much to keep up with. 10/10 online class experience.
Easy class to keep up with. Professor Lindaman was easy to talk to and happy to help. Great option for a 100 level elective.
Easy class! Got an A by keeping up with the readings and doing the assignments. Usually have one reading assignment per class period, super doable and easy.
Cool readings and class topic. Easy assignments. Felt like I learned a lot and this ended up being one of my favorite classes I've taken at Winona State!
Sweet class! Highly reccommend. Assignments were very doable and readings were unique/kept you wanting more! Never thought I'd get this excited about a history class. Prof was also very knowledgable about the topic and helped with any questions.
very easy class two assignments a week. very reading heavy two books required. he does not respond well to emails but overall good easy credit
Dr. Lindaman runs a well-organized course. The readings are interesting, and his lectures are helpful. Doing the assignments and using resources like unstuck ai can help you succeed in this class.
As this is an online course, you would expect the D2L page to be set up in a way that is easy to figure out. It's not. There are assignments that have not been updated from previous years and you don't really know what is due sometimes. He never responds to emails, so it is all up to the student to just figure out what he wants. This class sucked.
There are two graded assignments every week and the readings are interesting. The professor was very understanding and helpful when I fell behind due to an emergency. Would strongly recommend.
He is not good at giving directions; if he does provide directions, they are unclear and confusing to understand. He hardly responds to emails; if he does, it is not very helpful. The majority of the course material is long readings and questions that are very time-consuming. His grading is not clear. It is often hard to know what is due and when.
Does not grade anything, doesn't reply to emails in a timely manner, and when he does reply his tone is condescending. Links rarely work, and course organization is confusing. Vague directions for assignments. The books we read were interesting, at least.
Took this class online, and it was very easy. He is a super fair grader, and most assignments were participation points. There were two assignments per week, a project, and a final essay. There is a lot of time built in over the semester to complete everything. This is a great class to meet a goal credit, and Dr Lindaman is a great guy.
