Great lecturer but his tests are extreemly hard.
Dr Linford does a good job about lecturing on stuff that you will see in the homeworks, quizes, and tests. Tests really aren't that hard if you understand basic priciples and apply them. The class consists of homework from the book, weekly quizes in testing center (open book and open notes) , and tests. For a chemistry class it is not real hard.
Fairly straghtforward prof. Tests can be difficult, but won't kill you. Read the chapters, do the homework, go to lecture and study sessions and you'll do fine.
One of the best chemistry teachers you could have. Covers in Lectures exactly what you need to know for quizzes and tests. Tests are difficult, but manageable with hard work. This guy loves math-type problems and derivations. He's willing to explain things over if you need help and is very understanding. I recommend him over all the others!
Dr. Linford is one of the best teachers I have had at BYU. The class is a lot of work, but he teaches really well and doesn't waste any time. He tells you exactly what you need to know so if you study enough you will do great.
The worst professor by far that I have ever had at this university. You may have been told that his tests are easy... yes they are easier than Brown's but his bell curve sends you into outer darkness. He doesn't know how to teach unless you count talking straight to the blackboard as teaching. NOT A GOOD TEACHER AT ALL SAVE YOURSELF FROM HELL!!!
If you dislike learning chemsitry from powerpoints, take Linford. He has verbose notes that he writes on the board. He teaches right along with the book and helps students understand what's actually happening, instead of just throwing the concepts at them.
If you like learning from the chalkboard, go with Linford. It amazed me how many times he could fill the chalkboard in a 1 hour class. It wasn't too hard but he is really big on equations.
This guy is so cool. He's a great teacher and he is kind of funny. His lectures are awesome and he is really easy-going about extending test dates and due dates for assignments.
Great professor! Linford knows his stuff. expect to take 3 to 5 pages of notes per lecture. He usually covers the general concepts you need for exams and quizes. Not a hard class, but small concept and math errors on the exams can kill you!
He is a good teacher, teaches mostly from the book, but study his lecture and notes more then the book. His quizzes are open notes and book, usually follow similar problems in the notes. Test and quizzes make you work for your grade, but he teaches well. Homework is unrelated and I would suggest finding a full solutions manual to help you with it.
Probly the best teacher. Lots of examples. Just study your notes well for the test, that's where he gets the questions.
Not easier than other professors. Don't ever believe that you are going to get an A. The final determines everything. It is graded on a curve so be better than everybody else or don't take this class.
Hard has hell! I hate Chem 106 but he is probably the best teacher because he gives good notes!
Linford is probably the most unapproachable teacher at BYU. He loves Chemistry but doesn’t love the students. He is great at teaching until someone asks a question. Questions from students kind of snap him back from Chemistry land and really distract him. Don't talk during class - just copy what he puts on the board.
I absolutely loved Linford's class. His excitement for chemistry is infectous making lectures and homework fun. I could leave his class giddy because of how many totally awesome concepts we covered. If you study the test aren't that hard.
Dr. Linford is probably my favorite Chemistry professor that I've ever had, and I've had a lot since I'm a chemistry major. He explains things in a clear and understandable manner. His tests make you think, not just regurgitate useless information. He's approachable outside of class. He absolutely LOVES chemistry, and understands it very well.
If ever there was a student who spent hours and hours studying while others were out having fun and consoled himself with vengeful thoughts of one day being the teacher in charge this is him. Knows chemistry very well, but in his own dimension. Not proficient in dealing with individual students. Not better/worse than other professors at BYU.
Great teacher, finally someone who doesn't just make you look at power point presentations all day. Very smart and explains things very well.
Dr. Linford is my favorite teacher ever. He has a fun sense of humor that keeps class interesting. Sometimes the class feels kind of competitive to be smarter than everyone to stay on top of the curve.
Great Chem Professor! I recommend his class to anyone. He writes fast but is very approachable. He loves what he does.
Prof. Linford is smart but not really helpful. He makes office hours but is never there to keep them. You have to hope for a good TA for this class (Jared is amazing!). The class is difficult and confusing at first but as the year progresses you get used to it and may even like it.
This was his first time teaching 101 and he had a hard time teaching at that level. He would explain things in round about ways that weren't nessicary. He made easy concepts really confusing. Your whole grade was made from tests.
Prof. Linford is one of those people who is a great chemist but not that great a teacher. He was forever rushing and out of breath, and all the time he would start explaining something one way and then say "Wait, nevermind, let's try it a different way." Lectures were very scattered.
He did an excellent job covering the material that was on the exams. His class and exams were hard, but he tried to do his part to cover what we needed to know. He expected us to do a lot of studying and work on our own time.
Linford is a great teacher! Attendence=mandatory. Study=Yes He doesn't surprise you on the test, albeit they're thorough questions. 90% of the time he won't give more information that is necessary for the test. He's very concise, and the 'Powerpoints' maintain a clear direction for the lectures. For teaching it for the first time, he's first-rate!
He did an excellent job covering the material that was on the exams. His class and exams were hard, but he tried to do his part to cover what we needed to know. He expected us to do a lot of studying and work on our own time.
Difficult class, but Professor Linford did a great job teaching. Attending lectures is a must. Tests are pretty difficult, but I got an A in the class.
It may not be an easy class, but Prof. Linford definitely makes it possible! If you go to class and take good notes on his lectures you don't really need to read the book. If you do all the work he assigns you will do well. I got high C's on all the exams, but with all the other grades I got an A- in the class!!
Professor Lindord does a great job at covering a lot of material in a short amount of time. He is open to answer any questions and covers the material on the tests. Overall, I would recommend him to anyone who is taking Chem 105. If you can't get him, I've heard that Professor lamb is awesome too. This class also involves a ton of homework.
Prof Linford is one of my favorite professors! He is so excited about Chemistry and he blows something up at least once a week! He is very helpful and the TAs give really good reviews! I would recommend this class to everyone! Make sure you study hard and read the book and watch the chem tutor videos the night before. It will help you so much!
Linford is amazing. I really liked his class and learned a ton. The grading policy is very fair, but if you don't study your tail off, you will not do well on the test....it's not possible. The TAs are great and helpful, but you MUST do your homework. This is THE HARDEST class I have taken to date. Make sure you have time to study!!
I was terrified of Chem, but after taking this class, I love it now and am minoring in it. Inherently hard subject material, but Linford's grading scale is ridiculously easy. Free points on the tests, some extra credit, and lots of points from easy assignments. Plus in-class explosions nearly every day. Uses all of John Lamb's material though.
Compared to my other teachers ive had in my first semester at BYU he was the most clear and concise with his teaching style. Chem 105 isn't an easy class but don't get your undies in a bunch: its not as bad as people hype it up to be. Linford's grading policy (his whole class actually)is based on Dr. Lamb's syllabus and it is EXTREMELY fair.
He pretty much rips off Dr. Lambs slides and everything. He makes it tough to pay attention sometimes in his class. I was not doing very well just taking from him and then I starting attending Dr. Lambs class as well and he makes things a lot clearer.
Class isn't difficult if you hours of endless study time but the grading scale is fair nonetheless and a good grade is obtainable. Be aware that this course requires a lot of you. His lectures are just diluted book information and sometimes hard to follow.. (strays from subject topic alot bc he knows so much chemistry). Nice but not very genuine.
I would usually read the text the night before or just a little before class started.I averaged a B on his tests, but I did all of the work and I got a solid A in his class. Note chemistry is one of those sciences that you want to have a decent math background in (I had already taken calculus before this class.) He was VERY helpful in office hours.
Hard class. Prof Linford is a nice guy, but seemed to hurry through class. It is very important that you get a good TA and lab partner. Grading curve unfair.
Great Professor. Often seems like he's in a hurry. Some class material was superfluous.
Dr. Linford is great. Chem 105 is a hard class no matter who you take it from. Dr. Linfrod tries to make things as clear as possible and he is always available to help you. He made me love chemistry. Just be sure to devote hours to reading the textbook and understanding the material. A's in Chem 105 are possible!
106 is so much easier than 105, especially with Linford. He explains things so simply that there is no way you can't understand it. He's willing to take lots of questions during lecture. The tests are pretty simple if he writes them.
Linford is probably your best option for chem. He explains things as many times as you need and he makes things make sense... He goes slow and takes students suggestions. He is super funny too. Chem 106 really wasn't that hard and Linford is just awesome I would recommend him to anyone wanting to take this class! :)
Dr. Linford was a great teacher. He genuinely cares about his students and was incredibly receptive to class suggestions because he wants to make sure everybody does well. He can go a bit fast in his lectures but the 106 TA's were great at clarifying confusing material. Definitely the best option for 106.
Linford was a great professor. He went out of his way to make sure that we were understanding and learning the material. Sure the class is hard, but Dr. Linford makes it as fun as possible.
Dr. Linford was a fantastic professor, and I'd recommend him to anyone. He is genuinely excited about Chemistry and explains things extremely well. The class was hard, but Linford probably made it as doable as possible.
I really did not like Linford at all. He was really bad at explaining things and took things in to a depth that we didn't need to know. He enjoyed making us suffer and was unhappy when we did well. Most people really like him or don't at all. He just has a personality that is easy to clash with. The only good part is that we had a lot of subs.
The trick to linfords test is to study his slides!!! I would go through all of the hard problems that I could find in the book and try to know all of those for the test. I realized after the 3rd test that the ones I would get wrong were either Iclicker questions or small details on his slides. His test's arent as math based as you would think.
Dr linford wasn't the best at explaining concepts but he wasn't bad either. Iclickers are easy. He lets his students talk about what the answer is and drops 25% of the iclickers and 20% of the HW problems. he gives 5 points for xcredit which helps ALOT for the tests. midterm ave. for all four tests was a 76%. not bad for a chem class
Linford is awesome. He explained that he curves the class as much as the department will allow so that you will get the best grade you could have possibly earned with your scores in chem 106. enough said. I was actually quite surprised I got an A in the class. very nice guy. his class was definitely my favorite at BYU.
Linford is the best science professor I've had. He does move a little fast, but his grading system is extremely fair. His tests aren't too bad, the average is usually around a 76%. Four midterms, one which he drops, and a final. Overall most found it easier than 105. Take it from Linford.
I did waaaaay less work in this class than I did for 105 and I got the same grade, B+. It helps that Linford drops one of the 4 midterm exams. It's a really do-able class. I got a D on the final but still ended up ok.
Linford just lectures and does not stop. To survive you need to read before class. If you see him, have a SPECIFIC question, if not he wont help you. All other help will come from the TA's. I had a rough time in this class. He will grade you on iClicker, HW, and Exams. Good luck
Linford is brilliant and very helpful. You ask a question, he will answer, not intimidating at all! Really a very nice person and good teacher. Grading scale is fair. You must go to class and do extra work to do well. His tests are not very math based which means you need to understand the concepts well! His TAs are wonderful and very helpful!
Professor Linford is a good professor. He loves the subject material and tries to explain those concepts to the students. His class moves quickly, but if you put the effort in the TA's and even professor Lee are more than willing to help you.
Brilliant, passionate about chemistry, and eager to help his students. Exceptional professor
Professor Linford is a really good and nice teacher. His class is pretty hard and he moves pretty quickly, but he does everything he can to help you understand. He prides himself on helping the student understand, and I feel he does a good job. I would recommend him to anyone looking to take Chem 106. His tests are tough, but fair.
Genuinely interested in the subject and the students. Very fair and helpful. Tests are tough but he lets you drop one midterm and curves the class at the end. Good lecturer.
Pretty good professor. Not impossible, but still challenging class. Take advantage of mastering chem and TA res. sections. Linford is pretty fair. Drops your lowest exam and is willing to curve final grades if exams had low average. I would recommend him. Very caring about students.
I think he's the best Chem 106 teacher! Very encouraging of questions during class, and I think he does a great job helping us learn the material. Drops one of your midterm tests. I think he's pretty responsive to the class and a great professor!
his tests are only 30 questions. even the final. but they are mostly conceptual. horribly written tests!!!! the questions are vague and dont test you on the concepts. he is horrible at explaining. he goes too fast on iclicker and the class is largely confused the entire time. very very boring. only take if you can teach yourself everything
Dr. Linford was great. I would recommend him. Chemistry is hard no matter who you take it from. He drops an exam, curves grades, MasteringChemistry HW 3 days a week, and has good TA's. He has lots of in-class quizzes, but he drops lots of them. He has a dry humor and tries to be entertaining all he can. I liked him a lot.
You'll hear that you don't need to take 105 to take 106. Lies and deceit! I took 105 three years ago and 106 was the hardest class ever. That being said, it is not Linford's fault. He is a great professor who rushes through lecture just because of how much material there is. Good teacher, even better guy. Take from him, and do your work!
Super nice guy but seems to rush through lectures due to the amount of material. To get good grades on his test you need to study more than usual otherwise the average is about a D+ to a C. His tests are difficult and he has quite a few of them so be prepared.
The tests are pretty tough and there is a lot to learn but Professor Linford is a nice guy and he knows his stuff. I was glad I took it from him. Expect to put in a lot of time if you want an A. I recommend him.
A pretty good professor, really brilliant guy. A little condescending and doesn't make a ton of time for students but a pretty good professor if you do your reading and learn some on your own.
Linford is a good guy, but rushes through lectures, so it is easy to get confused in class. Read the textbook and be prepared to go to for help to the TAs or teach yourself. 4 tests, 1 is dropped, but tests are pretty hard. Linford is brilliant and knows what he is talking about, but sometimes it can be hard to learn from him. Fair class, but hard
Dr. Linford is a very fair chemistry teacher. The course is difficult, but he does a pretty good job of preparing you for the tests. There are tons of iclicker questions in class. He drops a lot of stuff -- like the bottom 25% of iclicker scores, bottom something percent of the smartwork homework assignments, and one midterm which is helpful.
Dr. Linford is an AMAZING professor. Understands his students and is willing adapt his class to the students advice. Tests can be tough, but if you put the time in a good grade is not too hard. Lectures are a must to get a good grade, but he explains the material very simple and in an easy to understand way. Take a class from him!
Dr. Linford was great. His lectures were very clear. His TAs are excellent and extremely helpful. He is very available and willing to help. He is also the most merciful teacher I know at BYU. Chem 106 is hard no matter what. However, Dr. Linford made it great.
there are no great chem 106 professors but linford is the best. he grades on a curve so that about 20 percent of the class gets an A. in the other classes very few students get A's. rushes super fast through lectures so its up to you to teach yourself the material.
Dr. Linford is a great guy. He was probably the best professor I've had so far at BYU. He really knows his stuff, and presents it clearly. The class was very challenging, but that's what you'll expect from any chemistry class. He wants students to get good grades, and he has a pretty nice curve at the end of the semester. Best chem professor at BYU
I have 74 credits, 3.9GPA, and had many science teachers. He's a very smart guy, though sometimes he has a little difficulty expressing himself. Subject matter itself can be difficult. His tests are really hard but he grades them fairly. All multiple choice. Almost always a curve. Regular clicker quizzes but tests are really what make or break you.
Super nice man, but his class is very difficult. The tests are tricky. He does what he can to answer the questions that are asked, but does not give you any breaks with borderline cruel tests designed to trick you.
Dr. Linford seems to genuinely care about his students and knows chemistry well, but I'm not convinced he has a good handle on what students are capable of. Sometimes the homework was posted the day it was due or there seemed to be too much of it. His quizzes were also difficult because he went very quickly through them. Good guy, though.
4 midterms, drops one. averages are in the 70s, at best. Lots of homework 3-5 a week. iclicker questions in class for points. He is a nice guy and curves the final grade significantly, though his tests are tough and expects you to really have everything down, hence the low averages. Recitation not mandatory. One of the better chem professors.
Dr. Linford is a good teacher who explains the subject matter as well as any professor. I-clicker questions during lecture are frustrating (but have minimal impact on your grade). Tests are difficult but doable if you study the powerpoints he posts and run through practice questions. I rarely opened the textbook.
This class was brutal! Chem 105 was a breeze for me, but the calculation-based 106 has been really difficult. I had a tough time learning from Dr Linford, and while the drop policy for i-clickers and smartwork assignments was very generous, I still was stressed by the class and struggled on the tests. Nice guy, just terribly boring material.
He's a great person, your best bet, and is really willing to answer questions. The ppts are best for preparation on tests and I would look over them at the end of each week as well; they are gold. Test questions are tough, you just have to be well prepared and read them like he is trying to trick you, the Ta's would even struggle w/some questions.
Chemistry is hard at BYU, but Dr. Linford is the best STEM professor I've had by far. His lectures are interesting and very informative. He is respectful to his students and more than willing to help his students. He pushes to curve the class as much as possible. He misses class a lot, so stay on top of the powerpoints. Tests are fairly difficult.
Linford is the best chem professor I have ever had. As long as you review his slides and do the recitation sheets, you'll get a good grade in the class. He drops a test too. He is an adorable and hilarious guy. I DEFINITELY recommend taking this class from him. He is a great professor.
Amazing professor! He is a motor mouth which can take some getting used to, but he's very effective his lectures. The best study material is his iclicker quizzes, they are hard but really help you understand the material.
There are 4 multiple choice tests and a final, but he drops your lowest test. The tests are worth 80% of your grade, with homework and iClicker quizzes (in class) the other 20%. He's a super nice guy, it's just a hard class.
Dr. Linford's class was a tough one. He explains things pretty well, he just moves very fast. Most of his class depends on tests, which is both good and bad. He does drop your lowest test score though. There are 4 midterms and they are pretty short. 25 to 30 questions. I would take from him again but it was a tough class.
Funny guy. Smartwork is a time drain. Tests are fair because of the curve at the end, but they are tricky.
As far as chemistry professors go, Professor Linford is great! The key to success in his class is to use his slides, spend time reviewing difficult concepts with the TAs, and go over past tests. His final is worth a large portion of the grade, so if you review the midterms and understand the concepts, you can do well in his class. He is reasonable.
Dr. Linford is a fantastic chem 106 teacher, best in the 106 department. Do all the homework, review for at least 30 min before class, pay attention to the test hints he gives out in lecture, and review all of the slides of his power points for tests. Tests are not easy, but they are fair. He really cares for his students.
This class was tough for me, but if you want to go through a rough class with a good teacher, you need to take it with Linford. He is very straight-to-the-point and also is very good at asking for questions. I would take it again with him if I had the chance for a re-do
Uses iClickers for both participation and class understanding. Teaches at a steady pace and makes sure every student that wants to understand, does. Very caring and knowledgeable in his field. Relates a lot of mathematical models to real-life applications.
Incredible teaching ability. Not only does he know the answer to just about any question you could have, he explains things in lecture so clearly that I never needed to read the textbook. I usually learn better from the textbook with Chemistry but not with him. Pay attention in class, practice with the homework and you'll be ready for the test.
Dr. Linford is very passionate about his subject and dedicates the time he has to an in depth look at the topics he said he would cover. Tests are extremely hard, the first few having the class average below 70%. Put in the work, you will do well. Do not, and suffer.
A wonderful professor! I wish I could take all of my chemistry classes from him. Don't forget about the homework. It's not weighted very heavily, but it's definitely helpful for the exams. He also has an awesome test retake policy where you can retake any exam and receive the higher of the two tests.
Honestly a really fair professor and class. I fell like Dr. Linford is a great professor - really passionate about chemistry, good at explaining things in lectures, and gives his students every opportunity to do well in the course (even offering exam RETAKES). It's a challenging class but not because the professor doesn't teach well.
It really isn't a hard class, just a hard subject. His tests are completely fair, and he offers retakes which you NEED to take advantage of or it will come back to haunt you. If you are confused on something, just email him or your TA and they WILL help you. If you struggle in chem, you need to take advantage of the available resources to get an A.
Offers retakes which are nice. He teaches pretty clear. You will pass the tests if you know the slides. However, there are some tricky questions on the tests that you have to be careful of if you are trying to get an A . Professor Linford is very smart but tried to be approachable and his TAs can be very helpful as well if you reach out to them.
Soo... where do I start. This guys is very smart, incredibly intelligent. The only issue is that he is awful at teaching/organization. I know that he knows the material but he is terrible at portraying his knowledge. Lectures are fine, he doesn't know how to run his homework system and about 10% of his test questions were written wrong.
A great professor overall. He had very frequent office hours which he emailed us about each time. There is a lot of material to cover so he is sometimes rushed in lectures but help is very accessible after. Tests were as fair as they could get, especially with his retest policy. He is human so he made a mistake or two but he owned up to them.
Study the PowerPoint slides and do practice problems and youll do fine. The tests are worth around 80% of the grade however you can retake the tests. Use your TAs and his office hours.
Dr. Linford is a very cute old man & I adored him as a person. There are in class clicker questions & homeworks are smartwork (if you've dealt with that before, you know how awful it can be) but they're not too bad. Sometimes lectures can move fast & it's hard to keep up but the class is doable. Difficult, but doable. Put in the time & do retakes!
Hate is a strong word. I didn't hate him per se but I hated the class and he really doesn't help you make it easier. Not accessible, won't tell you what to prepare for on the tests and then gives killer, out there, say-goodbye-to-your-GPA midterms. Does let you retake but that only helps so much.
Dr. Linford is really nice and I liked him as a person. But, the class seemed quite disorganized to me and I think I could have done better with a different professor. I learn best from going back over slides after class and especially toward the end of the semester his sIides were very unhelpful. The tests were fairly straightforward though.
CHEM106 is a tough class no matter who you take it from. That being said, Linford is the best. Holds a lot of office hours and is willing to help you understand material outside of class. He allows exam retakes for the four midterms, prepare best by going over his lectures and iclicker questions.
Professor Linford is a fabulous teacher! He is fun and easy to understand, even though you can tell he really knows his stuff. His lectures are super helpful, especially if you do the pre-reading.
Professor Linford was a great Physical Science teacher! The class is organized super nicely, and he has super engaging lectures. There are attendance quizzes every class, but they drop like 12 of them. The textbook is helpful, but if you go to the lectures you don't really have to read it.
He is a great professor. I was going through a terrible time when I took his class and wasn't able to put much effort into it, but he was very helpful. I really felt like he was on my side and wanted everyone to understand and get a good grade. He is great at explaining things unlike some professors who just want to show off their knowledge.
My mom died while I took this class; when I met with him to talk about my situation, I told him, among other things, that his failure to create a syllabus that had a course calendar made my situation even harder. He completely lost his temper and said his course content was valuable as gold and I should just be grateful. Okay. Thank you, Linford.
Awesome class from an awesome professor! His lectures are really clear and the class is very structured. Easy A.
I hate science very much, and only took this class for the Gen Ed. Linford made it all very understandable. Labs weren't great, but attendance is mandatory. It's hard, and a lot of reading/studying, so be ready for that. Go to the TA lab for help. GO TO THE STUDY SESSIONS BEFORE TESTS- they're lifesavers.
Great class, pretty easy A, Linford LOVES what he's talking about and it's sweet. Going to labs will make your homework load basically 0, TA test reviews are really helpful
I took this class over summer and during COVID, so take my advice with a grain of salt. Dr. Linford seems like a nice guy, but he is way too smart for me. This class caused me at least 10 mental breakdowns because I always had to teach myself the material. It's just a tough class in general, but I would try to find someone else if you can.
Professor Linford does a great job explaining chemistry concepts clearly. His lectures would clarify questions I had from the reading. He grades very fairly, giving students chances replace some test grades if they do well on the final
Classic sciency nerd guy, but he teaches in such a great way. He doesn't talk down at all, he brings the difficult subjects right to the students' level. Honestly a great professor for the general ed class where most people aren't majoring in science. Science comes pretty easy to me and the textbook is great. Just read the chapter and go to class.
He is a wonderful man, and loves what he is talking about.
Ah, professor Linford. We had quite a relationship. Or at least I did with him, he didn't know me because of how large the class was lol. Anyways, he is a very intelligent man and really knows his stuff. He ALSO assumes that we are also very intelligent and really know our stuff. He teaches, sure, it's just not fun to learn from him.
Professor Linford is a great guy, and not a bad teacher by any means. The class though is incredibly difficult, there is a ton of homework and the tests are extremely hard. Professor Linford knows what he is talking about but he talks really fast and assumes his students understand him perfectly, so that makes things difficult.
Professor Linford is obviously very smart and passionate about chemistry. However, because of how much material chem 105 covers, he moves very fast through lectures. There is a lot of homework between the daily problem sets and the online smart work. If you get a good TA and work hard, you should be good.
While I am sure that Professor Linford is an excellent chemist, and he is certainly very knowledgeable about the subject matter, his teaching skills leave something to be desired. His lectures were informative, but he just read straight from the slides.
Professor Linford knew the subject very well, but the lectures were so packed full that he was almost always rushed and had very little time for questions or clarifications. I found it hard to take any notes before he moved on to the next thing. TA's are lifesavers, and also have a good group.
Chem 105 is going to be hard no matter what. This class is well organized and all the resources you need are available and the topics are clear. I went to other professors' lectures and Dr. Linford was just not great at lecturing. If you can, take it from someone else, but Dr. Linford will do a good job.
Chem 105 is going to be a very difficult class no matter what but, I did not think Professor Linford did the best at explaining concepts in his lectures. When it was time to do the homeworks, the lectures did not prepare me and I had to go to other resources to get the concepts explained. However, Professor Linford is very kind and caring.
Chem 105 is hard. Professor Lindford is amazing, GO TO HIS LECTURES. Do the Aleks practice, recitation problems, and use your TA. If you put in the work, you will succeed.
he spent 2 weeks in Europe.
Professor Linford loves Chemistry and wants his students to succeed. Chem 105 has a lot of material and he presents it well. Stay up to date on the assignments he gives and get help from the TAs and you will learn a lot.
Linford is a nice and funny guy, but he was not the best teacher. He used material and tests from another professor and I never felt prepared for the tests or even just the homework. I'm not sure he ever looked at the tests tbh. Lectures felt pointless since I had to teach myself everything outside of class. 10/10 funny though, so thats cool.
Dr. Linford helped Dr. Sansom test her new curriculum, which was very guided but involved. Be prepared to study at least 2-3 hours every day, the tests have a very small margin for error. Dr. Linford was away for conferences or often ran of time for lectures, not helpful for me. Hope the class improves next semester. TAs are awesome.
Linford was decent at his lectures, and clearly knows a lot of material. Sometimes he had trouble explaining certain topics in simple enough terms. By skimming the reading before and after class and just studying a little each day, you will see huge improvement and better understanding. Tests were heavy and hard. Don't slack off early.
He is seriously so sweet and kind, but I would take 105 from another professor. TAs have said that they would not recommend him either. Lectures were packed full and quickly passed by. I had an extremely difficult time during this class and ended up withdrawing to take from different professor another semester.
Ik that chem 105 is hard no matter what but...bruh. Tests are so whacky tbh. you get 100 on the assignments and think u get 100 on test but u were wrong:'( Lectures don't reflect the test material at all. Maybe cuz he doesn't write the tests lolz. Teaching yourself outside of class is the only way to do well. He is a rlly nice guy tho.
Dr. Linford was very kind and knowledgeable about chemistry, but it did not transfer well to his teaching. He didn't use his own curriculum, so I think that made a difference, but overall the class was challenging, especially the tests.
This class is a weeder class, it's going to be hard class no mater who you take it from. But, Linford doesn't teach his own content he follows Sansom's content. We learned whole units without him looking at the test. The midterms had content that was never taught to us. Our TA's were never allowed to see the test when preparing reviews.
Lindog was tough as frick. From what I've seen he doesn't look at the test until he needs to grade it. Lots of homework that he sometimes hasn't taught yet. Also seems to have a tough time putting himself in the place of a student. But he gave a fat curve at the end so he's clutch.
Does a great job of explaining confusing concepts. Reading the textbook isn't necessary if you attend lectures. Professor Linford doesn't "get" his students - he can explain the basic material but struggles to further elaborate with questions asked in class. He doesn't know what content will be on the exams (class is designed by another professor)
He is excellent at reading slides, but also am I. He hardly ever stood up from his stool to explain a concept. He uses Aleks, an online resource to do homework, as pretty much the only resource for you to learn the concepts from the classes. If you send him an email to meet with him for help, he will tell you to do your homework in Aleks.
If you love yourself, don't take the class from Dr. Linford. It's a 4 hours credit class and believe me when I say that you will have to learn the whole class on your own because his lectures are not good quality. This class should've not been that hard but he made it the worse class I have ever taken and I'm not exaggerating.
Prof Linford just used the slides and tests that Prof Sansom made. So if you want to do well in this class I'd probably take it from Prof Sansom instead because Linford didn't even know what was going to on the exams most of the time.
Chem 105 is a hard class, but if you do all the work that is available (even the not graded stuff) then the exams are really easy. Your success in this class is entirely dependent on your commitment to it. Professor Linford is great in office hours, he will explain things different ways for you until you understand. He really wants you to succeed
If Sansom is available, take from her. Linford uses all of her materials (literally everything, including tests). One time he asked the class if we had any questions about a problem he'd just done, over half the lecture raised their hand. He said "well, we're just going to move on." There were audible gasps. Make sure you have a good lab group.
This course is difficult, but the professor does a decent job. A large portion of the classwork is graded on participation, and if you study hard for the exams, you'll do just fine.
Dr. Linford's lectures were not helpful. He was not very good at answering questions. He would just repeat what he said before. Sometimes he couldn't even understand what students were asking, so he would give random answers that meant nothing. Even in office hours, his explanations to questions were just bad.
Dr. Linford's style of running class is rather monotonous, and getting through the slideshow was more important than helping us understand difficult concepts. I did well in the end, but that was thanks to our final getting curved 7% because our average was 68%. Since he doesn't write his tests, sometimes you aren't prepared correctly, which is hard
Tests were way too hard compared to the difficulty of practice tests and lecture examples. practice tests were nothing like the actual tests and study materials were lackluster. Coursework was quite easy but tests were very difficult.
Professor Linford is a nice guy, its just the material that is very hard. You have to put in the effort to get a good grade, but it is possible. He teaches it well, and I enjoyed the material. The grade is a combination of book work problems, online problems, and IClicker participation. The lab portion is easy. Be ready to grind for an A
CHEM105 is notoriously difficult, but Dr. Linford did well at explaining concepts in the time he could. He is nice, and does his best to answer questions. Getting more help depends on your TA. There are SO many assignments- do them all to stay on top of things! For tests- TA reviews and practice problems from the textbook are your BEST FRIENDS.
Chem 105 is really hard so be prepared to prioritize the class. Professor Linford was great though. He gave us all the material we needed and seemed to care about us. The tests are always shockingly hard, so really study his lectures and ask questions.
Dr Linford's lectures were pretty good at explaining the topics and he always answered questions. Make sure you get help from TA's before tests, since I felt like there was a disconnect between the homework/iClicker questions and test difficulty. But he curved almost every exam and curved the final pretty heavily!
Has in-class iclickers, some of which get dropped. This hurts your grade whether or not you know what's going on. No super useful test prep, he essentially says if you talked about it in lecture it's fair game. I really don't like that you don't get exams back so you really can't improve upon your mistakes very thoroughly
He rushed through lectures expecting the students to understand the material like the back of their hand. Extremely unhelpful. I asked for my accommodations to be met and he straight up told me "No, I can't do that." Tests were unbelievable hard and weighted like crazy. Because of the first test I was stuck with a B until he curved the whole class
This class is hard but he explains the material pretty well! I got extremely burnt out at the end so my grade continuously dropped, so do not do that. The test questions are definently harder than the recitations and smartworks, but if you practice those it should be enough to still get a good grade. Overall he was not the best but not bad either!
The expectations were super straight forward. He cares a lot about helping students get the best grade they can get. My only issue was the mandatory lectures. They were pretty boring because I read the textbook beforehand so it felt like a waste of time but participation isn't mandatory so I just did homework.
Chem 105 is always hard and the curriculum is standardized across all professors, so every class will be difficult. Professor linford chose to give lots of drops and at the end of the semester he ended up bumping my grade because I'd seen him in office hours consistently. He also had some savage one liners, I loved his personality.
Professor Linford is an amazing professor! He's great at explaining concepts in a cohesive and logical way. He's also happy to answer any questions after class or go over the test with you. He truly cares about your success and is happy to help. He also doesn't try to trick you on tests, he himself said that he hates trick questions!
For Chem 105, Linford was pretty good. I took this in Summer term, so lectures were long and monotonous sometimes, but he went over everything we needed and answered questions. He was also accessible outside of class. Tests could be tricky, but if you study hard and do the homework, you'll pass with no problem.
Chem 105 is tough, but Prof. Linford is great at explaining the material. Use Unstuck AI and the textbook to supplement the lectures. Tests are challenging, so go to office hours and practice hard. Worth the effort for the curve.
Chem 105 is a difficult class, and not for the faint of heart. But if you have to take it, Linford is such a good teacher! He explains concepts in a way that makes sense, willing to answer questions, and cracks a few nerdy jokes in between. Although his voice does kind of make me want to fall asleep sometimes, he is a great professor
Chem is a hard subject, but he did nothing to try to make it easier or better. There are 3-6 homework assignments per week, and the final is 25% of your grade. There are TA labs, but it is such a hard class to understand and get a good grade in. There is a curve but honestly it didn't help that much. Sadly of all the professors he is the best.
Professor Linford's class is tough. If you put in the work, you'll do great. Lectures are always note heavy unless you remember stuff from high school chem. There's one lab a week at takes less than 1/2 hour to complete. Every lecture day, you'll have 2 assignments, one paper and one online, that'll take anywhere from 1-3 hours. Good luck!
Dr. Linford was fine. He read from the slides, worked out a few problems and then left. I know it's hard to make a massive lecture class like chem 105 enjoyable, but I could have gotten the same understanding from reading the slides and watching a couple YouTube videos. Just pray you get a good TA otherwise you'll be fighting for your life.
Professor Linford is such a wholesome guy, although his class is so hard. He doesn't do anything to try to make it easier, and when you have a bad TA your life is over. I ended up teaching myself all of the material. His tests are worded terribly and so hard for no reason. don't take from him if you don't have to!
Linford is an awesome professor teaching a hard class. Lectures are tightly structured and drive engagement. Very generous with drops on homework (of which there is a lot) and curving up exams. Not a big personality, but explains everything very clearly. Chem105 is going to be hard no matter who you take it from, but Linford is a good bet.
Dr. Linford did a pretty good job explaining ideas and concepts to the class. Lectures could be dry at times, but he really cares about what he is teaching. Dr. Linford will tell the class what types of questions are are the exam, which is helpful for studying because the tests can be difficult. Overall a pretty solid choice for Chem 105.
He has planned lectures and wants to get through them so he doesn't take time to reteach something if the class is confused. A lot of questions on the test are nothing like what are in his lectures and the test questions are very niche.
Honestly this class is pretty tough but manageable. Get ready to spend some serious time to solve the homework and study for the tests. However Dr. Linford is the best teacher for Chem 105, his class average was 10% higher than the other teachers as he prepares you a lot more for the test. He goes over the test before but you just have to study!
I entered the class with nearly no chemistry background, and it was hard, but I used YouTube to reinforce the concepts (Jeremy Halversen and O-chem tutor). Your TA can make or break the class. If you have a TA who doesn't explain things well, I would recommend going to another TA's recitation if possible.
My advice for this class. 1. Do the online SmartWorks (easier) before you do the Problem Set sheets (harder). 2. The textbook is barely used (I didn't use it and got an A). 3. Tests are 70% of the grade, so don't stress too much about the other stuff. 4. The TAs are super helpful in this class.
Professor Linford is very knowledgable, but he assumes students understand concepts at his level, which can make his teaching challenging to follow. In this class, you often need to learn independently or rely heavily on your TA for help. Lectures are dense and information-heavy, and you should expect several hours of homework or study each night.
Dr. Linford is obviously incredibly intelligent, but it was so obvious that he HATED teaching CHEM 105 because it was so basic. He assumed we knew things he was supposed to teach us. It didn't help that my recitation TA was no better. The tests are very difficult.
Linford was good for Summer CHEM 105. I expected it to be hard, but it was manageable. He makes his tests all nice and multiple choice. He is a nice guy. The only problem is that sometimes we wouldn't finish going over stuff in class, and then we would have to learn it in recitation. There is a lot of homework in this class.
Awesome professor!
Took CHEM 105 over summer term from him. Not very entertaining, tons of homework. Do the SmartWork HW & readings before class (SmartWork HW is easier than Problem Set HW, do those after class, use the YouTube videos if needed). Not fun, but not complicated either. Put in the work, do the assignments, have a good TA, and this is 100% doable.
