Don't let the rating scare you. He has potential to be a great teacher. He's a likable and approachable guy who cares about the success of his students. A fair grader that will give you chances to improve. That said, he's young and new at teaching. You might be better off taking a seasoned teacher if you want to understand the math better.
His class is extremely lecture heavy with multiple group activities . Weekly quizzes pertaining to the the previous week's lesson but the quizzes are extremely easy. Allows a lot of chances to gain extra credit throughout the course. I would say that his exams are way easier compared to most professor at Foothill. Really cares about his students.
Matthew is a great professor. He really understands the subject and teaches it in a way that is easy to understand as well. He gives a lot of homework assignments and there are a lot group activities in class. The class activities greatly greatly reflect how his weekly quizzes will be, so go to class!!! His exams are also fair.
He's fair at grading. He explains the concepts quite well. The group activities were fairly helpful.
Best math teacher I have had and he really takes him to time to make sure everyone understands before he moves on. Gives us time to work in groups and answers all of our questions and will find a way that works best for you to understand the problem. I would highly recommend especially if you are not so great at math.
Matthew is by far the best math teacher I've ever had. I took him for 1B, which is a very challenging class, and he did everything in his power to help me succeed. He really encouraged teamwork in our class, which I think really helped all of us a lot. Take him for any math if you can!
Wow. All I can say is take this prof! Yes he's young but he greatly cares about his students and teaches exactly how a student would want to learn when learning math. He writes little notes within his lecture that REALLY help to understand concepts most prof would assume you know. He helped me get over my math anxiety and I actually like math now!
Honestly the best math professor I had in college. He's new at teaching but he's great at it. His teaching helped me a lot as he didn't expect us to know the material like other professors and encouraged as many questions as possible. He used the textbook wisely as what he taught us would directly correlate with the textbook. Easier to follow along
I took him a while ago, but he is a great teacher. He has a lot of enthusiasm for the subject. His exams are fair and are pretty similar to the problems he gives in class. He also creates problems for groups to solve together.
Litrus is an awesome person, but he is new to teaching. His quizzes are easy, but his tests are brutal.
Math is probably my worst subject but he always broke it down and helped everyone understand the concepts better. If you had a question, he takes the time to answer it and doesnt make you feel stupid for asking. Good amount of HW, weekly quizzes and 4 tests total incl. the final. Go to his office hours if you need help!
I had a 4.0 before this class. Many other students were international, and had taken Calculus before. Only take this class if you've learned the material before, because it is too challenging for a first-timer, regardless of how intelligent you are.
Mr. Matthew Litrus is a pretty good teacher. I looked forward to going to his class every day, and I liked the way he explained the math concepts. However, his assignments always had at least 3 typos, he would make many mistakes during his lectures, and his grading isn't very specific. I still don't know what I got on the final and why I got an A-
This professor hardly teaches in class and teaches the topic in class as if the student already understands it. he quickly goes over the material, even though not everyone might understand what he is saying. Thinks he's funny too.
Litrus is the best math teacher, and one of the best teachers I've ever had. He has a funny and jovial personality, goes above and beyond to be available to his students, walking around the room and checking in on us while we work on class work, and is super prompt and thorough answering questions on the class Piazza page (great resource!).
Can be impolite. Very unhelpful in terms of questions and clarification, sometimes straight out rude and dismissive. Very hard exams and will quiz you every week, which can really bring down your grade. Very hard professor to pass with. Rushes through material, speaks fast, and writing is barely legible. Will hopefully never have to take again.
Honesty Matthew was a great professor! In the time I had him , he always helped me when I struggled and he was very understanding . He does have typos in the worksheets and its not easy to find when you are barely learned the subject. Overall , he is very reasonable, funny and always made me want to go to math .
His blackboard writing is terrible and goes through materials briefly. Touch grader! What he said in class is not related to exam, and the exam is very challenging. If you have not taken the calculus before you wouldn't pass this class because he assumes that you have learned it and will not explain the textbook in detail. Tried my best got C+.
Every exam is so hard and the quiz is unhelpful, and those will affect your grade seriously. Be prepared to the class as he will rush the materials in the class. If your self-study ability is not good, I do not advise to choose his course.
Hands out packets in lecture, but he only goes over half of it then expects you to do the rest on your own, which isnt a big deal, but he doesnt give you the correct answer ever and when you try to ask him for help he gives you an indirect response. You could be doing it wrong the whole time and would never know until you get it wrong on the exam.
Matt gives good lectures and dumbs down math as far as you need to go. He covers everything I didnt look at the book once I just paid close attention and didnt miss class. Very good class.
I took Prof. Litrus Fall 2017, and I think that he is very helpful and caring. He's more than happy to answer questions, and he wants his students to do well. If you come to class prepared (read the textbook chapters before lecture), study regularly, take notes, and do the homework, you should be all set!
This is the worst math class I've ever had here. He will give a very quick, brief introduction to the lecture in class, which you will not understand. Many quizzes, and exam questions are especially difficult. He will not tell you the answer to your question but will give you a very vague answer.
Did not like his teaching. He expects all his classes to be involved on an online forum. He will not provide solutions for his practice problems&expects the class to figure out the answers within themselves. If you end up with a class that does not participate, good luck. He also only completes 1/4of his inclass notes and expects you to do the rest
I highly recommend that you do not choose this professor because the way he teaches is horrible. He will not answer your questions explicitly and will not tell you the solution to your practice . The Quiz and Exam are very difficult, and he grades very strictly.
Matthew is fairly new to teaching but still manages to conduct his class well. I'm totally new to Calculus and yes, you will need to self study some to pass. He is a very tough grader (in fact one of the most scrutinizing I've seen) Matthew if you're reading this, you're great at what you do but here's my advice: focus less on test, more on lecture
Took 220 in spring after taking a break from math always hated math never understood it however Professor Matthew made me excited to come to an 8 am math class! was so excited that I continued to take a math class in the summer with another professor because I naively thought maybe I am good at this turns out I am only good when I have a good prof
Matthew is genuinely a nice guy; he tries really hard to get to know all of his students individually. Because of this, he is easy accessible outside of class. However, if you miss a day of his class you will definitely need to get help. His classes cover material that was covered in the class, but you need to make sure you study hard for his tests
He's not the best and he just passes out worksheets for you to work with. I took his math 1A class last year and I still regret it.
Frankly, I was concerned taking his course because I saw that he very recently started teaching. However, I found Matthew Litrus to be a very capable and caring teacher, and his lectures are well put-together. His material in 1B has been fairly easy, which is actually the only concern I have; I question my preparedness for 1C. Overall Recommended.
I am currently taking his course right now. Just want to say he is the best teacher I've ever met. Funny, responsible.... Easy A if you redo the problems he gives on the lecture. Definitely will take him again.
Relies on students teaching each other. Smart and funny guy but lazy vibe. 80% Worksheets, 15% lecture, 5% random talk. WON'T give you most answers. If you're smart, you will need to teach the neighbors. If not you must sit next to a smart ones. Online HW. Need to sign up and do discussions on math forum to pass the class. Class for extroverts !!!
I've never took calculus before but I still think his materials are easy. His exams and quizzes are pretty similar to the handout notes. Complete the online hw on time, 20% points deduction each day. Ask questions proactively and read textbook examples. If you wana get an easy A and you hv no problem with self study, take his class.
I took his course it was really a breeze for me his teaching style helped me a lot. I had failed all of my math classes before this one. He is very helpful and it was a fairly easy course to take. Online homework was easy he usually weighted the grade. And No Midterm! which is fun.
Litrus grades strictly such as taking points off if you don't put dx after the integral, which would really affect your grade. But he is very nice really. When I asked for help online he tried to let me get the answer myself instead of spoon-feeding, all the while supporting me by trying out different methods to solve the question. Recommended.
He really sucks. Never respond. Teaching skills? Clear explanations? no way. He doesn't care about you. He is teaching for the money.
evil.. deduct my points on purpose
Hes seems like a tough grader initially, but once you understand what he wants, its easy. For an online class, hes pretty standard in what he offers, but he is exceptional in how accessible and kind he is. I would also say his ability to explain complicated topics is also exceptional. Do the work and ask questions and youll get an A.
Prof Litrus grades harder than all the professors I have had before, but he is very knowledgable in calculus and willing to explain what is missing. His online class was nicely structured; there's weekly discussion forums and quizzes, but nothing too difficult.
Took Litrus for 1B and 1C online. 1) no live classes but super organized lecture/video material to self-learn 2) lots of hw (or maybe I'm just slow at problems) but unlimited attempts 3) all day open quizzes/exams bit stringent but fairly graded. Cool class.
No mandatory zoom lectures; just complete the online homework for credit. He does include videos that are helpful, informative, and very similar to quiz questions. Professor is accessible. An important note -- be thorough with your solutions! Docks points for certain nitty gritty details. Don't take this class if you can't teach yourself.
Really chill teacher. A bit green behind the ears but that makes him humble which is awesome. Really appreciate how down to earth and non judgmental he is. Super cool prof and would recommend
Professor Litrus is a great math professor. Although he doesn't have lectures, he gives really good handouts that help us learn the concepts more effectively than the textbook. He is also caring and understanding regarding technical issues. Weightage: Homework 15% Participation 10% Quiz (2 Quizzes) 15% Midterms (2 Midterms) 30% Final 30% No EC
Matthew's lecture was amazing which made Calculus not that boring, he also encouraged students to participate in the class actively so that you could get some extra points. I think that's a better way to motivate students to join and better understanding.
I took Math10 Statistics with Prof Litrus in Fall 2020, and it was a really great experience. He really cares about helping students succeed, and he made his lectures really fun.
I was wary to take Litrus bc his class didn't have zooms, but his modules & lecture videos made calc very easy to understand online. He has clear grading criteria which focuses more on the work and not really the answer so make sure you show ALL your work to earn full points. He is super accessible and responds to my emails almost immediately.
This class was an absolute horror to take. Lazy lectures from years ago, messy lectures, confusing homework, and impossibly hard tests. The test are nothing like the homework and activities done to prepare. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! Save your GPA, Khan Academy and TheOrganicChemistryTutor taught me better than this bozo. No extra credit, no lenience.
His exams and quizzes are hard. You will NEVER find any answers online. There are tons of additional participation quizzes beside weekly quizzes. Ruin your GPA.
At first, I was wary of taking his class, but it was so worth it. You need to put your best effort to get an A. Do the homework, do the weekly quizzes and you will be set for the exams. The exams are literally from the examples so as long as you study the examples in the lecture you are set for the exam. He is also very helpful and so nice !
its COVID and my mental health was deteriorating during this class. Math is exceptionally hard to learn without lectures and I reached out for help, asked to get credit back on quizzes and needed help. I emailed him a lot and at the end of the day, didn't offer me any support and flunked me due to a .02%
Best math professor I've ever had. His class is set up so clearly, you know exactly what to expect on the quizzes and tests. Very willing to help and answers emails promptly. He actually made math enjoyable! Can't recommend him enough.
The exams and quizzes are the ones that count and they don't match up with the homework, and they are worth very little maximum points(3-4 pts) but like 70% of your grade. So it doesn't matter if you go through the steps with effort and tends to the right direction, you lose like half or more points if you got the answer wrong.
Bottomline; listen to what people have said below. I gave him the benefit of the doubt and paid for it. If you are confident in your math skills, by all means, I'm sure you will do alright. Even for someone like me who did great in Math 1A and 1B, this professor's difficulty was insane. He's nitpicks at your written answers to an absurd degree.
He's super accommodating and actually cares about students, and the commitments we have outside of class. You do have to work for a grade, but that is true of any class. Very clear lectures/notes, and gives "cheat sheets" for some of the harder content in later weeks. I would def take him again if I could. I 100% recommend him!!
I took the MPS program with Matthew and I wish I could take it again. He had learning statistics so easily. I took stats in high school and got a C. But not with this teacher. I got an A+, I was then able to help other students. Highly recommend taking this course with this professor.
Professor Litrus can be considered the BEST math professor at Foothill. His lecture notes are very insightful and focus on the points. Calculus itself is hard so don't expect to get an A without studying hard. The exams cost the grade the most but tbh they are all doable and as long as you master the concepts, you can do well. He's the best prof!
For those who said Litrus is not recommended, it's just because you guys didn't study and work hard for the class. It is your own fault and please do not blame the professor. I studied hard, every week go to office hours, and I have never seen any of you guys, so stop complaining! You are the one that ruined your own grade. lol study for calculus
Professor Litrus's Math 1B class is one of the best math class at Foothill. I learned a lot from his lecture, he really dives deep into the material to teach the students on calculus. He has office hours every week which allow me to visit him and ask tons of questions. I really love his style of teaching and excited to take his class upcoming Fall
Professor Litrus is the worst professor Ive ever had. Boring, long, useless lectures that barely teach the content. I learned most of it from other online sources. Terrible grader, even if you get the right answer you could get 1/4 on a question. I had a final grade of 89.61% and he wouldnt round to a 90%. Avoid this terrible professor.
I was skeptical taking 1B over the summer due to the polarizing reviews on this website but ended up taking it anyways. Went much better than I thought. You should get an A if you do all the homework before the tests/quizzes. Only thing I disliked the tests being graded on such a low scale and his video handwriting was a bit messy at times.
Average grade on exams/quizzes around 75%. Somewhat unforgiving with grading and short exams/quizzes means it's really hard to do well. Materials are so-so, minimal, and sometimes are missing content helpful for quizzes. Video lectures sometimes have mistakes which is annoying. I don't recommend.
Took this class asynchronous and video lectures provided from professor consists of 2-3 10 min videos per lesson. Videos did not provide enough material to prepare for exams. Homework did not count for credit but still did them as practice. 70% of grade was exams (2 midterms, 1 final), 20% quizzes (weekly) and 10% participation. No curves or EC.
Average on tests is 75%. Two midterms and the final make up 70% of your grade. Unforgiving grader and the midterms are especially difficult. Tests are open note. I recommend finding the concepts and learning off YouTube, then going to a tutor every week to review. This is how you get an A in this course.
I took his online class math 1B and math 1C. His lectures are clear and organized very well. Easy to understand. There are plenty homework to do. As long as you finished the homework on time and watch all the online lectures, you will get a good grade.
Professor Matthew Litrus is an excellent and fair professor. His lectures can sometimes get overwhelming but he is always willing to help and repeat something that he went over quickly. Try to stay on task and do the homework focusing on notation and technique most of all. H focuses on technique as opposed to the right answer computationally. GL!
This will be the most honest review here. This class is a GPA dropper for most. Test is difficult and confusing at times. He also grades unnecessarily harsh and gives no ECs. To remind you, I did well in A,B from the infamous Zach but I genuinely think this class is 2x harder. Most importantly, the teaching is mediocre. Please avoid at all cost!
I thought his class was ok, his lectures were clear but they didn't really go over all of the topics on the tests. He did provide review problems for midterms and final, which were helpful. But his grading was harsh, so be prepared to study all lot for his class.
horrible.
Guys, the grading is rigorous but not unreasonable, just study. I learned a lot in this class. Lots to read but his modules summarize well. Go visit office hours too, he is very nice. My only complaint is I didn't do super well on the final which pulled my final grade down to 92.93, but there was no rounding and I got A-. :(
I took an in-person math class, but wouldn't recommend if you're online. Don't fall behind and you'll be fine. Got an A. Pros - organized handouts for notes - course (elementary stats) paced nicely - nice Cons - attendance is pretty much mandatory (no recorded lectures or zoom if you're absent) - not so great at online communication
He is responsive and helpful.
Don't take this class, especially if it's online. He's a very tough grader and he doesn't do a good job of teaching the materials. And he would take point off for any mistakes you made in your steps.I'm not sure how he expects his students to earn an A with the way he grades.
He values correct notation in math and cares about his students. Modules and his video lectures teach the material really well. Go to office hours if you have any questions! Responds to emails within 24hrs. There are 2-3 hw assignments + 1 quiz (or a test) due every week. Stay on top of your work and understand the concepts behind math techniques.
Honestly one of my best experiences at college. His online lectures are very well made with interactive graphs so you can understand and is considerate at explaining things. He leaves great feedback on all your work except hw. Weekly work consists of weekly quizzes and a few hw assignments, you have unlimited attempts at hw but tests are timed.
I took him async, which didn't work out for me that well. Class content was well-organized and mostly exam focused. Not all of the exam content was thoroughly covered from lessons, and others in my class felt the same way. I think it is possible to do well with self-studying, but the provided content was average. I would recommend him in person.
The first two exams were hard, but the final was easy. I finished it with an hour to spare and got almost 94% on it. He reserved the right to change quiz and exam dates, so attendance was mandatory, but he never actually changed them. After a death in my family, he was the first prof to express sympathy and concern.
Super caring about his students and super accommodating. He cares about students' success. His teaching methods were easy to understand. It was entirely in-person so I can't say much about online. If you communicate well with him you have a good chance of success. My classmates who did well on the other exams did not need to take the final.
I really liked his class! He teaches through guided worksheets during the lecture and there are a few homework assignments every week following the lessons. There is a quiz/exam every other week, but they are quite easy. Participation gets you extra credit- not required. He's a good guy, understanding and helpful.
I absolutely adore Professor Litrus. He is an awesome teacher with very clear grading expectations and classroom expectations. He provides guided notes and only uses problems covered in class on quizzes and tests (so make sure you pay attention to how to do the work). Overall an awesome teacher that wants you to pass and will help you succeed!
Professor Mathew explains math concepts very well and grading is ok. It is very difficult to get an A in his class. He doesn't give any extra credit and doesn't drop any lowest quiz and exam. 2 midterm exams were difficult, and the final exam was even harder due to added more challenging questions and not enough time to complete.
Took AP stats in highschool but ended up retaking it with him, he explains concepts very well. Although you might need to do self-studying if you don't understand concepts, 10/10 rec. Very funny as well
This was a fun class but his way of teaching is too fast and doesn't really explain the concepts. I found myself watching online videos to help me. He has reviews you can take before an exam and shows the answers but doesn't show how to solve the problem.
Litrus is clearly passionate about math and it shows in his lectures, though they tend to be a little too fast-paced for my liking. As passionate as he is, he doesn't explain some concepts very well but he makes up for it by allowing us notecards on biweekly tests and a large cheat sheet on the final. I recommend studying extensively before tests.
There are tests every 2 weeks, they arent too bad and the lowest one gets dropped. He goes through everything very thoroughly and gives time to answer questions during class work. Very easy to work with and acomdating
He is way too fast, if you do not have any prior calc experience I do NOT recommend taking at all. Test every 2 weeks. Teaches way too fast well.
He's well organized, he makes sure that the boatload of stats materials are covered in a timely manner, and his study guides are exceptionally accurate. I highly recommend him
Sorry of being so late but I highly recommend him for calculus because he is able to go through the vast amounts of concepts quickly but accurately. He never gets tired of answering questions and he also introduce us to tutoring programs that helps many of us get A's in his class as we naturally form study groups as well. TAKE HIM!
Wished I could have more classes with you
Goated professor. The pacing is just a little bit quick for people who haven't had calc before. But for the people who did, this might be the most passable class of all time.
Final Exams were easy, and he gave you a heads up on what would be on them. This gives you time to study the material beforehand, so there's really no way you could fail. I would like to take more classes with you in the future!
