By the far the best intrusctor csn has to offer. Willing to help as long as your willing to learn. Will go way out of his way to explain the material in order for you to understand but you have to ASK!! His tests are 50 questions worth 2 each and 2 short answer question which are easy as long as you study. Take advantage of all his study resources

Matt is great at explaining what can seem like confusing concepts. He gives powerpoint slides for every lecture and study guides for every test. I had Matt for lecture and lab. This is a difficult class and he makes his tests difficult. I studied everyday and still got a C on every test. Many of the answers are tricky, so study as much as you can. He lectures very well, but be prepared to look like a fool when you ask him a question. I would prefer him for lab than the lecture.

Mr. Mahrt is very organized. His lectures consist with powerpoints and lets you print out all the slides for that section. He gives you tons of study materials so you could be ready for tests. Study materials like crosswords, preactice quizes and videos that you will help you understand concepts.HE is also very funny and makes the class interesting

More than an outstanding professor. With so much material in this course, he breaks it down and thoroughly teaches you everything in a rather interesting way. Walking into biol196 with no previous sciences was a nightmare, however Matt is great at explaining things. He offers tons of study tools, and if I could have him again for next semester, I would. I'd recommend him to anyone.

These are agreed upon 6 students: 1. He's a good teacher and knows his material. 2. He is condescending and students are afraid to ask him questions. 3. He talks so fast that it is hard to take notes. (He doesn't pause between sentences.) Use a recorder to reference your blank areas of notes. Stay ahead of the material.

Cons: talk too fast, don't encourage students to ask questions. advices: Use a recorder and take many class notes because he don't follow the book and his class slides are different then what you can download to your computer. Great professor. My sched: 7days work-2jobs and 4nights school-2 classes. Its college-laziness will screw you. Don't expect to come to class hoping to write a couple of essays to earn extra credit to bump a letter grade. I almost gave up, was hoping to just get a 70 to pass and get over it but got a B at the end. Study HARD and don't procrastinate.

Teacher is wonderful. If you need 189 for a pre-req take this teacher. His classes fill up fast for a reason. Probably a good idea to record his lectures because its a lot of information. Take really good notes and go over them each day and you will do good. Don't think you can just show up and get an A you have to study.

Ended the semester with a B despite the bad reputation of the course. Come to class with a copy of lecture slides for notetaking, do all assignments, and do the exam recoveries (this helps a lot!) and you will be fine. It's not the easiest class but it's also not the hardest. Matt knows his stuff and will explain things very clearly.

Honestly you go to class you pass. I barely opened my book and I missed 4 lectures in one week and got a C on the exam. No essay questions, no questions you might feel like he tricked you on. All exams are from his homework, lectures and his iclicker participation. By far the best teacher!

Any biology exams are not always easy to pass. Ask anyone! Mahrt's class is simple, go to class and take notes and record throughout his lecture. He will only grade you with Online Homework and 4 exams. The exams will be based on HW, practice quizzes, and his lecture notes. His teaching skills are very high standard, ALWAYS RECORD AND STUDY HARD!

I've taken Bio 189 once before and it was nothing like Professor Mahrt lecture. He is very clear and easy to understand. There are 4 exams, and so far they are very straight forward, I highly recommend completing the study guides and vocabulary he provides online because most of it appears on the exam. He has online homework,which are easy points.

Taking this class was probably one of the best choices I made. Really, if you need Bio 189 then take his class. I did not even buy the book and passed with a high B. He is amazing!! extremely knowledgeable on all the material! Most classes you can memorize things YOU CAN NOT DO IT IN THIS CLASS. You have to learn the material and understand it to pass the tests. Read the chapter, watch the videos he provides online, do the practice tests and you will be fine!

Do the work and study a lot for the exams. Ask him questions, he seems rude but he wants to help.

MAHRT HAS MASTERED THE ART OF 189! Print out his powerpoints, take notes as he goes -- and you're golden! Clear grading criteria. Exams are challenging -- but easy points for online quizzes, 30 points for iclicker participation, and offers optional extra credit by doing exam recovery on questions you missed. Online final. Easy A if you just TRY!!!

Mahrt is a really good prof. I worked 7 days/week, took his class at night, (missed a few) but I still got a B because his lectures are amazing and I learned a lot. He lets you ask questions and discuss. His class and grading was organized. He has truly mastered the class which I respect. If youre a Christian, just brush off what he says sometimes.

Matt is an amazing professor! Although this class was tough, Matt had a way of breaking down complex terms into simpler ones to make sure that we understood what he was teaching. He did not use a textbook but did use an I-clicker. Attendance isn't mandatory, however I recommend attending all his lectures to keep up with class.

If you want to pass Bio 189 the first time please get Professor Matt, he is worth the wait even if his class is booked up then take him next semester and don't waste your money on another professor. This is my third attempt trust me i know. A book isn't mandatory in his lecture, he gives good feed back and teaches in a way that you understand.

I'am so happy I had Matthew Mahrt for Bio 189. Honest to God great teacher. He has been doing this forever, and puts everything in a way you can understand. No need to get the textbook, he goes off his power points. His lectures are amazing, and keeps you wanting to hear more:)

As someone who has taken bio 189 before let me just say this HE IS AMAZING. He is so knowledgable and BLUNT. TAKE HIM! He makes things so easy to understand and actually enjoys being in the class room. No need for the book but if you feel like you need another resource go ahead. I clicker is used and making it to class should be a priority .

Great professor!!! He says the textbook doesnt make sense no need for one. Everything is on his notes but you need to present for them b/c he only has the outlines online. Easy online quiz each week but you have 3 attempts. 4 exams and test corrections for first 3. Humor is blunt but funny. Makes bio a lil less stressful than youd think.

Take CHEM 103 prior to this class. Four exams, three exam recovery, online homework assignments, online quizzes, and iClicker participation questions. Will not test you on information he does not cover in class. Amazing at breaking down complex information. Everything based on his lectures/powerpoints. Studied 3-4 hrs/wk. Highly recommend!

I highly recommend this teacher! He has a knack for explaining complex material in a way you can truly understand and learn. He has lots of material online to help you learn as well. He also has exam recovery which gives you a chance to recover points from exams you missed. Hes a great teacher. I wish he could teach all my bio classes!

He's a great prof, they way he explains material made it easier to retain. He wants you to apply the info so his exams can be challenging. He doesn't teach out of the textbook so show up to class to keep up. I rated him at a 4 instead of 5 because we were behind most of the semester and he really dropped the ball after we transitioned online.

Matt is very clear in his online lectures and really knows what he's talking about. There are practice quizzes that are very useful to utilize before completing the workbooks for a grade. All of the quizzes he gives are great to study from for his exams. The final exam is OPTIONAL for students however it is recommended to complete if you have a C

Biology 189 is a hard class but his lectures explain everything so well. They are a bit long but he explains in great detail. The tests are easy. He's always happy to answer any questions. You cannot slack off in the class, but I would say it's an easy A. If you're lazy, you will do bad no matter what professor you take for biol.

I had to retake Bio189 and decided to take professor Mahrt online this semester. There are 4 exams total with a 5th optional one. The exams are all based on lectures. There are 3-4 lectures per exam and with each lecture there is a workshop that is graded. I had about a month to prepare for each exam. I would definitely suggest taking him.

You can watch is online lectures & do just fine. His lectures are all you need to ace his exams. Ppl complain his lectures are long, but you can speed up the videos. He gives you practice quizzes, vocab quizzes, and 3 attempts at "workbooks" which are graded quizzes. Most of his exam questions will come from these 3 sources. Awesome prof!

Dr. Mahrt really helps you understand the material. All of his exams/quizzes/workbooks come from the lectures/powerpoints. He give you fill in the blank powerpoints and posts his lectures online after in-class lecture. I feel very confident going into higher bio classes. lots of practice quizzes!

His exams are on the workbook, practice quiz, and vocabulary. Go to SI to get extra help. His exams are online, so you can take it at the comfort of your home.

Professor Mahrt was fantastic. Lectures were interesting and provided plenty of examples for the material being covered. Class grade is made up of 4 100-point exams and 200 points of workbooks. To prepare for the exams, study the workbooks, vocabulary, and practice questions and you'll be set.

2nd time taking Biol189. TAKE HIM, WON'T REGRET IT. He's been teaching this class for 14-15 yrs & has simplified topics as much as possible. Lectures not heavy. Great at explaining in multiple ways. Never keeps you passed class time. 5 exams, Optional final. 1 exam/monthly. 2-4 homeworks/MONTHLY. 10/10! Wish I took him the 1st time...

Professor Matt was awesome. He broke down material in an easy to understand way and was helpful when needed. Textbook use was mostly for study since he didn't teach right out of it so not necessarily needed. work load is easy. Professor does take a while to grade though. Overall if I had to I would take him again.

Taken Bio 189 THREE TIMES and taking professor matt helped me understand this course completely. regardless this course is somewhat difficult and it moves fast but honestly, i couldnt have chosen a better professor to teach. he does speak a lot and creates a lot of analogies for the same topic but the whole point is to understand what hes teaching.
