didn't care for others opinions when they differed from his
Critical and informative. He keeps the b.s. out of the classroom.
really easy midterm, overall nice guy

Except when talking about irony, he's great. Makes you read canadian ****.
Likes discussion, hard marker, easy midterm, doesn't like to be disagreed with
very intelligent, passionate, and blunt
Biggest waste of time of the semester. Good novels, uninteresting discussion.

really helpful if you go to him during office hours; very smart; rustically sexy
hard marker, nice guy, bad books, helpful in office hours
If all you want is a good mark just listen to everything he says and regurgitate
He took over for my prof. He was very helpful in office hours
Failed me, now I'm a 4th yr english major. He hates women. He can't handle critical or original thoughts!
He was the biggest **** of a teacher that I have ever had. His idea of a high quality paper does not reflect on the ability of the student, but on his own opinion. I would never take a class with him again.
Gave really good assignments. Really makes you think about what you are reading. He doesn't accept crap--so don't try it. Also--hot!
explains things well but student ideas have to be within a fixed radius of his own. essay assignments are fair but he expects a lot. No one got an A the class.
Inspiring, goes out of his way to motivate students to be turned on to literature.
I like him. Easy going guy with a wry sense of humour.
He does inspire you into literature in class but then butchers you in marking. It's like "hey how bout u try real hard so I can give you a C!???" fun, huh?!? he reminds me of a leprachaun (sp)
He went out of his way to make sure we knew opinions other than his were ok. His grading was tough, but he was also inspiring. I'm a girl and he doesn't seem to hate me.

I was dreading this class; I took it cos I had to, and it ended up being great. Lots of class discussion, and really interesting reads. He is a really hard marker, but if you don't know how to write essays and use the spellcheck, take 115 instead.
i have to take this class. At first he seemed alright but he is very unogranized, goes off about phylosophy and stuff like that during the class instead of having a clear plan of what he needs to talk about. He nods and smiles and THEN he marks you down.
Fairly interesting class. A lot of reading. Weird books. He goes off on a lot of tangents. Attendance and notes pretty much mandatory, you have to regurgitate his ideas on exam essays. I got a B- and I missed every friday class. What's up with his hands&#
hard marker, I never been in class where a teacher makes fun of the students, expected a lot, pretty much scares me

It doesn't matter that he goes off on tangents because there's no final exam & he is flexible with the projects! He chose great books & actually had some interesting things to say about them. Highly recommended for anyone who is creative & loves grammar!
This instructor is getting an undeserved bad rap here. The books were good; the assignments were flexible; he was helpful. It's true his lecturing style is not great, but he's intelligent and thoughtful.
Interesting prof with good novels to read and the class style is great because of group discussions and free writing. Very particular about grammar but it seems fair. Also, very helpful with essays and leads you down right path for a decent grade.
I LOVED this class, 10:30 am 5 days a week wasn't as horrible as I thought it would be! He was really open to new concepts and didn't have the mindset that he was right and no one else was. Sharing ideas & speaking in class work for you? take his cla
Great class.Interesting books. The prof facilitates discussions well.Listens to opinions and lets you think out loud.Goes off on tangents, but they connect to content. He wants you to love literature and write well.I learned a lot.
Dr. Manera is awesome! He's my favorite prof, he is really helpful and actually cares about his students.
Fabulous; doesnt like idiots or small minds, passionate teacher, line ups during office hours, seems unapproachable, is quite the opposite, the most intelligent person i have had the honor of listening to, his hands are obviously arthritic or damaged you supreme jerk to jeer at suffering?!!?
I loved his class, the lectures were great and he's so passionate about the subject matter. Tough but fair marker. Interesting course material, hilarious tangents about Cohen and other poets' strange backgrounds - lol. doesn't like ignorant people, and expects you to appreciate the poets he likes.
A Terrible Professor A Terrible Man
Great class, great prof. If you don't do the readings & you don't pay attention in class, don't expect to do well. I'm tired of all the morons out there that think just by going to class you can do well. WRONG.
Essay topics are hard
Professor Manera is a passionate teacher who desires his students to become engaged, critical citizens. He is thoughtful and compassionate human being. If you want to be challenged sign on.
great attitude and made the class really enjoyable and this is coming from someone who dislikes english

Good professor and knows his stuff but YOU MUST REALLY KNOW YOUR GRAMMAR!! He'll kill you on this, and having your own opinions on what Canadian literature is or isn't may not always be appreciated....
An arrogant man who was unprepared to teach the Bible in English. Very disappointing.
Has NO clue about critical theories. Telling you students to "Think about that" constantly is not teaching. Got way more out of group discussions than anything he presented us with. Nice guy, crappy teacher.
He is really interesting, knowledgeable and helpful. He makes time for his students and doesn't make you feel stupid. Highly recommended.
Extremely hard marker. He knows how to analyze work very well but in no way helps you to do the same. Extremely arrogant. Doesn't appreciate students views. Good about meeting with students.
Found him very interesting until the end of the course. Teaches straight from the text, so the classes seemed repetitive at times if you'd done the reading, which barely anyone in my class did. The assignments all seemed to apply to what we were learning, and seems to be a fair marker. Enjoyed the few tangents he went on in class.
hard marker. thinks he's always write. boring class, bad sense of humour. if you can avoid his class, do it!
This prof's assignments are not difficult, and his marking is fair. I am very poor when it comes to English; however, he makes the course easier than i thought it would be. I didnt really try hard for assignments and study for exam, but i still got an acceptable grade. Highly recommend this prof if u wanna just get eng over with for 1.5 units.
The best English prof. I ever had, by far! He is enthusiastic, knowledgeble, and enlightful. I wouldn't say he changed my life, but I did learn a lot from him! Must take one of his courses.
While the course itself is not particularly interesting, he only adds a burden to the course. The 'Critical Thinking' process requires time, and it's not something that can be done with the assignments he gave over the semester.
Always follow up on bad grades. I received a failing grade on a major assignment, went to speak with him, and ended up with a mark in the 80s. He just misunderstood my points? I was generally unimpressed with this course, and was upset that there was mandatory attendance or no writing the final. Gahhhhhhhh
The essays are simple topics that receive next to failing grades. The people who normally get A's in english came out with C's and C+'s. The ones who posed ignorant thoughts in their tests came out with better grades then the english majors. worse professor i have taken in three years!
Make a list of all his tangents durign calss, it will make it go by way faster and will be hilarious. He likes to open discussion to the class and gets really frustrated when no one responds. But, he's entertaining, and you learn lots of miscellaneous information.

Was an alright teacher. I was expecting more out of the class.
so he does say hes a hard marker, but i found that it made me work even harder, and ended up with a really good grade, better than in markhams class who said he was an easy teacher. the class was really interesting as well, I went in with very little expectations but wow it was really good. Definitly worth taking.
Got an opinion? Good - okay, now get rid of it! If it's not his opinion on an essay, then it's WRONG! I suppose he and I have a personality conflict...and he's a hard marker. Probably good for 3 and 4 year classes, but for 1st year he's pretty intimidating!
Very nice guy, eager to get to know students out of class and to 'talk shop'. With very minimal criticisms I scored much lower than did other classmates I consulted who developed similar arguments. His emotions/ego stand in the way of his teaching. If you're an attractive girl sit in the front and you've got an edge ;) unlucky for me.
I sat at the back, spoke up a bit, and got a better mark than I deserved- and I'm not pretty either. Suck it up! He brings a breadth of knowledge to the class that trancends the subject- he's passionate about what he teaches and loves when students are interested too. Genuinely nice, real, guy; I'd take another course with him anyday.
I thought he was one of the best profs! I ended up with a better mark than I expected, and his essay suggestions were refreshing. He made you think outside the box and I thought he did a great job of teaching the class and accepting opinions other than his own. I would definitely recommend this prof, especially as an upper-level prof.
the most bitter, boring monotone teacher i have ever had. You can't hear what he's saying half the time. He mumbles. don't take him if you have a choice.
I really like that he's bitter, I think it's hilarious. He's an honest prof, who grades fairly and tells it like it is.
I love how he teaches.
I found this professor very unhelpful, and classes were very boring. There was also no structure in any of the classes. Very hard marker.
Worthless at teaching English. Telling students that he "wants to steer away from interpreting poetry" creates a course that is nowhere near intellectually challenging. Essay topics are have nothing to do with literary writing or the course description. Take this course if you want to get your English requirement without thinking. Overly emotional.
he drove me crazy. Though I'd like to say that he would make an EXCELLANT philosophy prof instead - seeing as your grade is based on your philosophical insight rather than your ability to write.
At first I liked the idea of him teaching poetry without "tearing it down to its literal meaning," but he just got bitter-er and bitter-er as the course went on as he realized that we were growing bored of his tangents and random facts. Small workload for an English class. Hard marker though.
not a fan of the short story section of the class.
I enjoy the class and feel like I learn a lot, but he is an OVERLY hard marker. If you're one of those people who love writing and always got good marks prior to this class, prepare to have your spirit torn out, self-esteem trampled upon and GPA lowered.
A miserable, miserable man. Difficult marker, doesn't give you proper feedback on how you can improve. Chooses terrible literary works to study also. Not marked on understanding of the works, but on your understanding of absurd philosophical concepts. Don't take any classes from him unless you absolutely have to.
This man alone made me never want to take an english course again.
Poor man needs to respect his students a little more. Very concrete in his ideas, and dares you to question them. Very, very tough marker, with complex and philosophical essay topics. Okay exams, but overall as a class for marks not very enjoyable. But the works he chose were really interesting, and he loves what he talks about.
Fantastic Prof! Thoughtful reflections on course reading. Quite philosophical in regards to literature and life and wants/expects students to be the same. Prepare yourself to not get an A..
AWESOME prof! I actually didn't find him to be an especially hard marker. I got an A in the course. I loved his lectures, he was funny and passionate and insightful. I also loved the works he chose for us to read, he obviously knew them very well and put thought into his choices. His class was why I chose to do Honors English.
very hard marker, but the man loves his subject and inspires interest. the workload was low, but attendance is mandatory. i found he gave good feedback and was exceptionally good to me. he is very good with make up assignments, etc . .
you could tell he didnt really want to be stuck teaching first years, but i learned a lot from him. a tough marker for sure. picked great readings and was very clear about assignments and exams. he gives good lectures too - very perceptive and insightful! take his class but dont expect an a +
Interesting man. As a cocky first year student he put me in my place. Comments were not particularly constructive but he calls them as he sees them. I managed a B+ but there were some students that genuinely tried hard and ended up bordering on a pass. Good if you liked being challenged intellectually, but stay away if it's imperative you get an A.
A bitter, disheartened man who has realized that he has become a clichéd failed poet. I had never received a mark below 85% in English before taking his class. Opinions that don't agree with his are unwelcome. However, if you are happy regurgitating his ideas and kissing *** then expect to do just fine.
At first I absolutely loved this guy. He was bitter, hated society, interesting, incredibly insightful, basically the reason I stuck with this class. However, he preaches free thinking, but really means write exactly what he has said about the subject in class. He also plays favourites hard. Look up some Leonard Cohen factoids to woo him with.
He tries to apply eastern philosophy and buddhist theories to 18th century English poetry. He doesn't welcome any opinion other than his own. He goes on long, mumbling tangents. I got a B+ and worked my ass off. Be prepared to work hard and hate english after every class. Take 147 if you like english, take 135 is you need to get english over with.
He managed occasional moments of brilliance in his lectures but was really only interested in what he thought. He is a hard marker for first years, and his comments are terse and offer nothing constructive. He can help you understand what an academic essay is supposed to look like, but there are less supercilious people at UVic that can do that.
An extremely hard marker for someone who teaches first year. I had taken previous College English courses with B level marks but ended up with a C from him. Not very clear with assignment comments but did allow a chance to re-do assignments. Used the text daily which is a nice change. Avoid if you don't want to be challenged.
Has very strong opinions and gives the impression that others opinions are stupid. Makes you feel dumb, shoots down every opinion and offers no constructive criticism. I would not take another class with this prof, even though it seems like he means well.
A very hard marker. Before this class I would recieve A's/high B's but now I'm getting a low C. He is just not a very happy man in general.
SO Hard!!
Very hard marker, after getting A's in high school, I almost failed the first assignment. However, I went to his office hours and he was by far one of the most helpful teachers I've ever had. After talking to him and discussing my faults, I did well on all my other assignments with him. He is very helpful, all you have to do is ask.
I would recommend Dr. Manera for upper level classes. A stickler for grammar but a fair marker.
Manera is a very hard marker for a first year English professor. I got an A on the English 12 BC provincial and always have done well in English. I struggled to get a C+ for the first 3 assignments. He would mark the smallest errors, and had a very specific style of writing that he wanted. Hard to know exactly what he wants..
Manera was a difficult marker, especially on grammar but as long as you backed up your arguments and explained yourself well he would give you the benefit of the doubt. If you go and see him during office hours he's a great help. He's very funny and does like to go off on tangents but I had a surprisingly enjoyable first year English experience!
Tends to go off on rants throughout the class rather than teaching the material. Nice guy, good prof but class is extremely boring and hard to attend. Fair marker, but almost impossible to move into the A range.
