Great teacher. He is a good lecturer. Made class interesting. Likes opinions and comments. He is a great guy and a great teacher. I learned a lot and not too much homework either.
He was a good teacher, but he is very vague on grading assignments and your grade is very subjective to how he feels about it. Doesnt have class very often and doesn't require much.
had him at a school before BYU. good lecturer even better when asked questions. grading is sometimes vauge but not trifle. good person who will eagerly help if asked.
Awesome, this guys lectures are allot of fun. He takes you on a wild ride into the past. Very motivational
best history class I have ever taken. I learned and retained so much of the information. I highly reccomend him. His stories are so interesting and it was a three hour class and went by really fast
He is my favorite teacher this semester. he makes the class very interesting and understandable. I highly recommend him.
He is a great proffesor! The only thing that is hard is that there is a lot of reading and the tests can be difficult. The class is really cool though.
i think that this is a really interesting class. before taking this class i dreaded learning about history but he makes class worthwhile. the tests are pretty hard and there's tons of reading though.
He is very willing to answer your questions, and he makes his lectures fun and interesting. A few suggestions: sit in the front row so you can ask questions during class and he'll even talk to you before class starts. Also, do ALL the reading. He's very nice and helpful. I highly recommend him!
His class was kinda crazy. He really helped the class remember the random information that we needed to know for tests by showing video clips and crazy little dances. It was a fun class that i will remember the information longer than a week after the semester ends!
He's definitely got a lot of self confidence-he can be pretty crazy at times. He's not a bad teacher, but the tests are hard. Can't get out of it though, it is AHtg :(
Very excited about what he teaches. Makes classes interesting.
This class was the hardest class I've taken, but Prof Mason is a pretty cool teacher. You can tell that he loves the subject he teaches, and it makes the lectures more interesting. The TAs are helpful if you go to their office hours.
The tests were just insane! They were so hard!
His class is my worst grade so far in college. His tests are ridiculously impossible. He will always have 2 answers that are pretty much correct so you will find your self guessing on the majority of the test. Would not recommend at all.
Dr. Mason is a good teacher, I learned alot from his class. Make sure you study for his hard tests. Go into the lab and make use of your TA's in lab. I really enjoyed his class, he is quite quirky and if you notice he squats throughout the whole class. We counted once- 81 times in 45 minutes!!!!
Personally i found mason a bore! I colored probably 7/10 days in this class. Tests are just impossible-focus mostly on lecture when you study, he likes economics and the contagion of liberty.Take notes on the movie clips, they are on tests and it is hard to remember by then what they were about aga
I was thrilled to take this class, but it was insane how hard it was. You are expected to read 6 200-300 pg books and another on your own. He said he would grade the tests easy b/c he didn't give out a review, but that was far-fetched. He's a little unclear with his materials too.
Always available during non-class hours and very attentive to your questions and concerns. VERY DIFFICULT GRADER!!! He expects more than perfect writting, but he helps you reach that level, too. He will help you uncover writting skills you never knew you had. Very personable.
His lectures put me to sleep and his tests were very hard, but not an impossible class if you are willing to put the time into it. Get lots of help from your TA and you'll be fine. My worst grade at BYU, but I wasn't interested in the subject.
He is the best history teacher that I have had at BYU. He explains US history in a way that you have never thought about before. This was a great class.
He is one of the best teachers I have ever had.I take his classes even if I am not interested in the topic because I know if he is teaching it the class will be awesome. He is the kind of teacher that knows your name and shows you he cares about you. TAKE HIS CLASSES THEY ARE GREAT!
I loved this class. Mason gives very interesting lessons and it gets you into the class. Tests are really hard, but do-able.
This guy's great! He knows the stuff and if you don't get he'll explain it...and you'll actually understand his explaination! His tests are hard, but the lectures are interesting and you can learn real easily from them, especially his from his clips. Take him!
Great class! Don't take it as a Freshman, if you take it Jr. or Sr. year you'll do a lot better, and its a lot easier! You have to do all the reading, come to all the lectures, and Labs and you will do fine! You just need to stay above the average grade and you'll get an A. The Lectures were fantastic, take notes on everything!
Professor Mason is very funny. His lectures are effective, though his Powerpoints seem a little unorganized at times. His tests aren't exactly accurate representations of how well you know the info. The class is a challenge, but definitely do-able.
Oh, my Gosh! I am really getting crazy, just because I took his class. It looks easy and enjoying in the beginning, but after taking the 1st exam, you'll understand that you were complitely wrong. Prof. Mason tries to be funny, but actually he isn't at all. He really is prepared, but not enough to make us understand and love our American Heritage.
Professor Mason is amazing. I'm not a big fan of history classes, but he helped to make this class very bearable. The tests are hard and sometimes seem to require obscure knowledge, but he's a very good teacher. Remember to take good notes, attend labs, do the reading, and know your notes for the test. He's really funny, I would recommend him.
Take this class from another professor. Postpone graduation if necessary! While the class is suppose to be on the principals of the American founding(which he'll to you to study), the exams test you on your ability to absorb random useless names and dates. The professor is misleading, and it seems he'll do anything to flunk you. Avoid at all costs!
its not as hard as everyone makes it out to be. Other than the obvious stuff(paying attention, going to lecture blah blah) Make sure you know every historical figure talked about (not hard, like 20-30 per midterm) and also know the video clips that he uses for examples
dont let the comments here daunt you. paying attention to his example stories will get you through a lot, and anyway, there is a MASSIVE curve on this class. instead of a high fail(high 50s), i got a C. as for Mason, i reccomend him. he keeps class interesting. the only class this semester i couldnt sleep through :).
Wasn't a bad class. Can get an A if you study well. My problem was that some of his information in lecture was completely opposite of what I learned in American government. Just little things, mostly, but they really bugged me, because I knew some of his information wasn't really correct. Kind of disappointed, because I love American history.
I thought the topic made for a great class but was very dissappointed. He had us read a couple of interesting books but several bad ones. A lot of the time I felt like he wasn't teaching correct information. There was a history teacher taking the class and almost every time he came there would be a difference of opinion on something.
Mason was the worst teacher ever! I would rather suffer a horrible and painful death than sit through his class. Avoid at all costs! I agree with the other guy's comment...postpone graduation if needed!!
Tests were horrible - not his fault, though. I think the test are written by a panel of professors and TA's. You are tested on you ability to decipher the question, not on what you learned. As far as Dr. Mason was concerned, he seems nice. Who your TA is will affect your grade; they do not grade uniformly. Pray for a good TA!
Civil War era is a great class - one of my favorite's at BYU!! Dr. Mason is well organized and communicates his points well. We used no textbook, just interesting primary source readings that really threw you into the material. Much preparation is needed for the tests - mostly essays; gives helpful comments on the test to prepare you for the next.
The tests were awful, yes, but that is not Brother Mason's fault. He doesn't make them up, he just teaches. American Heritage is awful overall, but I liked Brother Mason. I only really learned from the lectures. Readings were awful.
Great, clear lectures that are entertaining. Gives a study guide with essay questions that will be on the test. Some weeks are heavy on reading, some are light. You simply have to read ahead on the light weeks and the reading is not a big deal. Teaches history like it should be taught, great professor.
Dr. Mason teaches well and is rather entertaining. The material is pretty clear and he uses lots of examples and stories which are interesting. Lots of reading and the essay tests are definitely way challenging, though.
Great professor... very interesting lectures and choice of topics. Gave study guides for midterms which were very fair. There was quite a bit of reading, but he told us when we could just skim. I would reccomend Dr. Mason to anyone for this class.
I found Professor Mason highly unprofessional in dealing with students. He clearly favored the male students over the female students. His comments on my papers were very demoralizing and insulting. He was also highly unapprochable for help. I would not recommend any of his classes to anyone.
Tests can be killer if you don't take really good notes during lecture. He does a lot of application of principles rather than simple memorization. But his lectures are amazing and he keeps them pretty entertaining with a ton of video clips. Also, he's pretty funny and approachable, so have fun!
I found Dr. Mason's lectures very interesting, and he used a lot of video clips so we would understand the material better, but the big problem with him is that his tests don't seem to reflect what we learned in class or in the text. I studied harder for this class than any other class in my entire life, and I still didn't do as well as I hoped.
I loved this class because his lectures were entertaining and taught the course concepts well. His tests are a little challenging but if you study and apply the concepts they aren't too bad. I usually did pretty well. Also the TA's are awesome and provide lots of great help, especially right before tests, if you go to the review.
Prof. Mason is an excellent teacher - high energy, great video clips, electric personallity but the tests really are beasts! I studied very hard and only did okay - lecutes are manditory as most of the test comes from them. Labs are fun if you get a good TA. Three tests and one paper.
I found his lectures dull and excruciatingly long. I tried my hardest to stay awake and honestly there were only several times I didn't fall asleep. The lecture and book have very little to do with the test. Best thing is get a good TA and go to lots of review sessions for the tests. P.S. memorize the constituion...
Dr. Mason is a good teacher. His lectures weren't too bad. The tests are hard, but he's a really good teacher. Take American Heritage from him
Consistant themes, i.e. "Contagion of Liberty!" Enthusiastic teaching and responds well to questions.
Very energetic, very clear, very good teacher. Shows movie clips and clips from Lost to help illustrate points. Shows alot of videos. he gives the top 25 percent of class A's then the next 25 percent B's. Class isn't boring and he's a funny guy, Highly recommend taking him
I really liked Prof. Mason's lectures especially how he used clips within his teacher. I, on the other had, could not stand his tests! I would study for hours and see no results. Choosing the BEST answer and sometimes having 8 possible mult. choice answers was incredibly discouraging! I felt like a good TA was the best way to get through the class
This was a lecture-based class, but Mason made it more bearable with multimedia clips from news, movies, and TV shows.
I loved this class...It is definitely easier if you take it in the summer though. Dr. Mason's lectures were very entertaining. The tests are kinda difficult, but if you use the review rooom you will do just fine. The TA's tell you what you should study and go over whatever you want help on.
I was scared of American Heritage because I hate history, but Dr. Mason's class wasn't that bad. He tries to keep lectures interesting with lots of media clips and stuff. If you take notes in lecture and read the packet readings, you don't need to pay too much attention to the book. Highly reccomend his class for American Heritage.
He is not an easy professor but definitely fun and really knowledgeable. as long as you keep up with the assignments and lectures a good grade is doable.
He's great, but his tests are ridiculous
Dr. Mason is the man! He really knows the stuff and he tries to make things entertaining. I was ticked there wasn't a review sheet for the final, but the class is graded on a curve so whatever stupid things were on the test affects everyone, so it's really not that bad. Go to class and you'll do fine.
I really enjoyed Dr. Mason's class; it was extremely interesting and I looked forward to his class. Lots of the material comes in the lectures and the reading helps support. I had heard AmHtg was hard but I found it fairly easy and interesting (I took it in summer). He likes to have fun in class and I'd definately take another class from him.
I was disappointed by the one other rating from someone who took 490 from Dr. Mason, because everything she said I did not see in him. Dr. Mason went out of his way to help all of the students, He is incredibly smart, he is funny, and once again he is very willing to help the students, which is key in this class.
Dr. Mason excels in this field.
Great teacher. Pay attention and take good notes. Do the reading and actually think about what it's saying. People say this is an impossible class. That is because they didn't do all of the reading and/or didn't think about what they were reading. I wouldn't bank too much on the curve... there are kids in every class that are smarter than you.
When I first heard about Mason, I pictured an old dude who's lectures were boring and took history too seriously. Mason is really a chill guy who is interested in the subject, and makes it interesting for the students (whoa, history? interesting?!?). Really, a hard class, but great lectures, and great instructor. Most interesting history class yet.
Dr. Mason's class was a joke!! His tests are the hardest I have ever had in college. His TA's are worthless!!! I'm not a bad student, I feel sick if I ever get lower than an 89% on a test but in this class I got 70% and even a 48%. I don't feel this was to any fault of my own. Take another class!!!!!
Dr. Mason is great! He's funny, his lectures are entertaining and fun, and you stay interested. There's a lot of reading to do. TAKE GOOD NOTES in lecture and reading. The tests are brutal. The one thing I hated was my TA. ADVICE---go to a few different TA labs before adding/dropping so you don't get stuck with a crappy one.
American Heritage kind of gets a bad wrap, but in reality I did not think the class was that bad. Take good notes, and do all the reading and I think you'll do well. Dr. Mason is very entertaining, even if you don't do as well on the test, you'll still enjoy having him.
Contrary to popular belief, American Heritage is NOT a hard class. It is possible to do well as long as you attend lecture, take good notes, and do the reading. Dr. Mason is a very good speaker and the lectures are very captivating. He makes the class interesting and worth taking.
You're are expected to take the hundreds (literally) of pages you have read for each test and somehow by divine inspiration know which little facts will appear on the test. Don't go to the reviews the TAs don't even know what is on the test. He does try to keep lectures interesting but the subject is so boring.
Mason gives mildly entertaining lectures. In American Heritage he developed a mentality that because we are not high school students anymore, we don't deserve a review; which makes it difficult to pull nit-picky details out of 300 pages of text for a test. Essay questions on tests are focuses on topics that were not discussed extensively in class.
Professor Mason is an awesome professor! Don't skip any of the lectures because he's a really interesting speaker and you get quizzed on the material he covers. Plus, he ties together the concepts in a way that the book doesn't. I highly recommend him.
Hated the class so my opinion is biased. The key is getting A GOOD TA!! My TA was an AH nerd so figured we all should be to and graded very strictly. Mason tries to make the lectures interesting but the tests are ridiculous theres lots of reading and lots of application questions with like 10 possible answers. plan on studying a lot for the tests.
He is awesome at lecturing. Great public speaker. I enjoyed his class. But there is a ton of reading in his American heritage class. If you have to take this class, I would take it from him.
No matter who you take American Heritage from it is going to be a hard class. My roommate took this class last semester from a different professor and it seemed like she had a lot more work than I did. He tries to make, and in my opinion does, class interesting. I would recommend him for sure.
Without a doubt, the best way to fulfill the general. The class is not difficult if you do the work. That's the key, there is a lot of work and if you don't do all of it then you will not like your grade. I received an A in the class; The formula for getting an A is: do all the readings thoroughly, go to the labs, attend all lectures. Awesome class
I loved this class. It's hard yes, but it's supposed to be. Attending lectures is ESSENTIAL. And it's not even that bad going to lectures because he is a great speaker. You can tell he is excited about the subject and it rubs off on you. The way I got an A was the old fashioned studying my notes. It's not a glamorous way but it works.
Professor Mason is a good speaker, and gets the concepts across well. He covers a lot in lectures, but in the theater it is hard to stay awake. If you take this class make sure you start the Service asmt. soon, and GET TO KNOW YOUR TA! Its almost impossible to study for the tests, and they are very hard, but it curves in the end so keep going!!
He was a great teacher and explained everything very well. I found interest in the subjects. He is a little hard though and there is a lot of reading and work involved.
He was a good teacher. Not the most entertaining of teachers, but I learned what I was supposed. I thought the tests were very fair. A lot of times there were two possible answers, but one was the best. It's most important to study concepts really really well.
Professor Mason is amazing! You need to take good notes not just on the slides but on what he says. He has a passion for what he teaches. Make you sure you go to your lab. Staying up on the reading is extremely helpful. The tests are not too bad if you study by going over notes. I got an A and really enjoyed the class!
This class was terrible. He was a good teacher, just really boring. Make sure you get a good lab. I studied my butt off and got a D in the class. There is usually a curve, but unfortunately, my lab happened to be the only one where someone got 990 points. The class is inevietable, so Mason is decent. Take notes.
Attention last rater. You are wrong. Even if some got a 100% it does not push the curve down for others. I asked my TA the same question. The curve will only ever lift you up. The class was very interesting and every American will learn TONS about the history of this country. If their was an American Heritage 2 I would take it. Mason rules!!
Absolutely amazing teacher. If I had taken Professor Mason earlier I think I'd be a history major. Great lectures, fair grader, great sense of humor. What a guy!
I liked the class, but he hated my writing style. He makes lots of sports comparisons, which the guys like. Over all, a good professor, but not the best one ever. Still enjoyed the class and learned a lot.
I took the Honors section of this class, and it was perfect for me. We had a lot of discussion, and the tests were essay tests - instead of the usual AHTG multiple choice tests that everyone dreads. Prof Mason tests on his lectures, which are always interesting and engaging. He makes this GE totally worthwhile.
This guy thinks he is cooler than he really is. Plus he is always wearing black shoes with a brown belt and white socks! That has nothing to do with anything but I thought it was funny. But really, this class is amazingly hard. I would recommend taking it at the slc center or even better at UVU. Don't let a 100 level class kill your GPA!!!!!!!!!
Professor Mason is an extremely good professor. I took an honors section of the class, and he had just the right mixture of lecture, discussion, and media. He really makes history apply to the present and retells the old facts in very interesting angles. Possibly the best class I've taken at BYU so far.
One of my favorite teachers. I took both Hist 221 and 369 from him and loved them both. Lectures are interesting and engaging. Lots of reading, but it is usually interesting. He is a little picky with writing style, but I still did pretty well with tests and papers.
Professor Mason is probably my favorite professor. History 490 is obviously a hard class, but he was so willing to help with anything he can, and you can tell that he wants to help. I would recomend him to anyone, especially for 490.
I took his class in the spring time and it was aMaaazing! He is hilarious and helps you understand the provocative history behind the events. The readings can be skimmed, but are crucial in understanding the test essay questions. His lectures were phenominal and I never wanted to skip a class. Picky writing but very FAIR + fun class discussions
Great class!! The Civil War is his thing and he really helps you love it too. Classes are interesting and he's a great lecturer. He's SO interested in helping his students and really gives you everything you need to succeed in his class. I really liked him and his class.
Professor Mason incorporates a great mix of lecture, discussion, lab, and textbook and supplemental readings. He made the class very manageable, definitely capable of getting an A in that class if you work hard.
Professor Mason is incredible!! He keeps lecture interesting and entertaining (which is GREAT for American Heritage). He doesn't assign NEARLY as much readings as other teachers do. Definitely take his class!!!!
Dr. Mason was amazing! I was not excited to take the dreaded American Heritage! He made it so interesting and applicable to life. Tests were hard, but study guides were useful. I loved how he started every class with "G'mornin Ev'ry Bahdee" :)
I definitely wasn't crazy about this class and did the minimum amount of work to get by. Mason is a good professor, so I don't want my rating to put him down. In some ways it was my fault that I didn't do the reading and wasn't ready for the TA lab or quizzes. The study guides definitely help with the exams, just make sure to really know all of it.
I really couldn't believe this guy was a college professor he was so factually inaccurate. There was a visiting professor auditing his class and any time that professor questioned something he had said Mason would backtrack. The only thing he was good at was pointing out every time he thought he was making a clever segue which was very annoying.
Professor Mason is a super good teacher. His lectures are always entertaining and he is really funny. He keeps things super interesting and does a great job with the subject material. This class is hard though. He has 2 tests and 1 paper that require a ton of work and make up 75% of your grade. Be willing to work and you will love the class!
Interesting guy. Super knowledgeable but because it was the first time the class was offered, he didn't know what was supposed to be taught and it was pretty obvious. He also won't pick on you to talk if you disagree with him on anything. Expect 3+ hours for tests. I was excited about the class but didn't learn as much as I was expecting to.
Although his lectures are somewhat interesting, he (or the TA should I say) graded the tests and essays super hard. For this being a GE class it was really hard- lots of reading and difficult essays. I studied a ton for the tests but still did really badly. The TA is a history major and expects everyone else to be on her level.
I was honestly really excited at the beginning of the semester. Professor Mason seemed committed to breaking down the typical lecture based history class. As the semester went on, I liked him less and less. He's not clear on expectations, his assignments are confusing, and if you don't write exactly how he wants you to, don't expect a good grade.
I only give a bad rating because the organization of the class made it harder than it needed to be. He didn't really talk about what was expected on his assignments aside from a short blip in his syllabus, but he was very particular about how he wanted them done. Then he acted all generous when he gave you a bad grade instead of a terrible one.
Best class I've taken at BYU. I'd take from him again in a hearbeat.
The readings were fascinating, his lectures were great. I seriously gained so much from this class. His grading was rough. He'd never give 100% on anything including participation and his TA killed me but all in all great class.
The class was team taught by Mason and Sanborn Jones. It was a very discussion based course. He is incredibly strict about following instructions on prompts. I went to him to explain an essay of mine and he wouldn't budge claiming I hadn't followed the instructions. He likes to be in charge and it is evident in his grading and when he lectures.
I thoroughly enjoyed this class from Dr. Mason. I don't know what people were talking about, he was very specific on how he grades, what writing style he wanted, etc. I literally felt like I just did the bare minimum and I got an A. It was also very inspiring because Dr. Mason is very passionate about slavery, and wanted us to become activists.
Dr. Mason is an above average teacher. His lectures were interesting to listen to, however, his course is tough for a general class. He requires a lot of writing assignments (about 13 two-page papers and 2 eight-page papers). If you don't mind writing, you'll love him, if not, find a different professor.
Dr. Mason is a nice guy. But this class was so generic and unstructured I had difficulty knowing the criteria for a good paper and how to succeed in general. Feedback on papers was not constructive and no matter how much I tried to implement it it never raised my grades on them. Do NOT take this course to fill your art general.
I really think this has been my favorite class I have taken at BYU. I am a history major and I think Professor Mason is one of the best in the department. This class is tough, but Professor Mason is really willing to work with you on papers and preparing for tests, you just have to ask him. There is a LOT of reading, but most of it was interesting.
Prof Mason's class is pretty straightforward: read primary source docs. before class, write 13 short reading responses, write one 5 page paper, and take a midterm/final. Make sure to participate because it effects your grade. Do your readings even if you don't have to write about them. The class was challenging but definitely worth it!
Probably one of the worst Profs I've had. He is rude when grading assignments and is very picky on what he is looking for. His lectures are very slide heavy and it is hard to stay engaged.
Awful and degrading professor. Made it very clear he disliked our entire class, and did not care about our success. Refused to meet with students even though he said he would. Power point has all the information he says, but is confusing and out of order. I learned nothing and was tested on everything including my patience. Impossible grader; picky
Worst person I have had the displeasure of learning from. Was obvious he had a personal vendetta against our class. Thinks he is hilarious. If you don't laugh, dont expect a good grade. Boring slideshows, hard to pay attention. Youll never write a good paper as he always changes what he wants, especially because it isnt on syllabus. Unprofessional.
He certainly is passionate about the subject, but the London study abroad with him was miserable. Unprofessional with students, unclear on assignment requirements, so much homework we might as well have taken the class in Provo because we didn't have time to explore London. Stressful experience and just an immense disappointment.
There is no rubric for papers and grades are seemingly based on his overall perception of your paper rather than anything specific. The feedback you receive leans more toward offensive than constructive and can get personal. The readings were straightforward although sometimes unnecessary. The final was about what I expected though.
Honestly, I was very disappointed in this professors behavior towards me and my fellow classmates. I have never come across a more unprofessional and immature educator in my life. I hope that if you take his class you have a different experience than I did.
I LOVE Dr. Mason and I loved this class. He is so engaging and intelligent and you can't help but be interested in anything he says. There is a lot of readings and smaller papers but that is the norm for a history class. If youre willing to be responsible, this class is a must!
Professor Mason's class was engaging and insightful. You have to be in class to understand material on tests, but he is also very understanding and helpful in his office hours. We had weekly responses, two bigger papers, and then the midterm and final, but overall, it was not too burdensome. Do the readings, attend lecture, and you will do well.
I LOVE Dr. Mason. He is one of the most passionate teachers I have ever met. He is a little eccentric, but it makes the class so much more fun. His assignments are straight forward if you actually do the reading and the tests are easy to study for. If you pace yourself you'll do just fine with the reading load.
Dr. Mason is one of my favorite teachers at BYU. He is very intelligent, funny, and engaging. He is respectful to his students and is very available outside of class. However, if you don't participate in class and do the readings you will not do well in the class. But if you manage your time wisely you'll be successful!
Professor Mason was enthusiastic about the course and brought that to the lectures. He didn't give busy work - just lots of reading. The variety of the reading was excellent; there was not one textbook but several history books. I really enjoyed the project: group presentations on film clips about WWI.
He's fantastic and absolutely passionate about history! His lectures were always interesting and he has a great sense of humor. This class is hard- be sure to participate by asking questions. Oh, and ask him how his fantasy football team is doing.
This is the best professor I have ever had, by far. He is passionate about history and engaging in his lectures. He is clear about what will be on the test. He is engaging and exciting and connects ideas throughout history very well. There is a lot of reading and weekly papers on the reading, but the reading is pretty interesting. 10/10 loved it!
This has been my favorite class at BYU thus far! I learned so much and Professor Mason made it fun to learn. One thing that I really appreciated is that he knew all of us by name and always gave good, respectful feedback on all of our comments. I hands down would recommend this class to anyone who really wants to learn. It isn't just an easy A.
There aren't a lot of grades, so pay attention. Your final is going to be around 4000 words. He's an interesting and engaging lecturer, but his tests killed me. I found them hard and confusing, and I don't think he gives back good feedback. Participate in class: it's for a grade (and he never gives out 100% for those). He's really opinionated.
If you are taking this to avoid Am. Heritage, take that class instead. Your grade depends on a few papers that don't have clear grading criteria and he gives poor feedback. There's a participation grade. His lectures with a blended class were hard to understand given sound difficulties. Take it from a different professor
Professor Mason is a great person who really does care about his students. Very prompt at answering emails, however his tests were always unclear with no guidance whatsoever. No rubrics or clear expectations were given, making it extremely difficult to know what he was looking for. Overall, the vagueness and ambiguity of his class made it very hard
Very unprofessional, criteria unclear. Politics cause divisions these days. So, MY CONSERVATIVE FRIENDS, if he gets any impression that you're conservative, it's over. He told me to participate more, so I did. I accidently outed myself, my grades suffered from that moment on. He would regularly mock conservative views in class.
Lots of reading, dont get behind. Dr. Masons main care is that you read the assigned material, gather evidence, and are able to craft a compelling narrative and support it with said evidence. Excellent notes are required for good test scores. Fun, clear teacher
Dr. Mason is a great teacher who is clearly passionate about US History. I really enjoyed this class. He assigns quite a bit of reading and relies on you to stay caught up. Also, he doesn't share powerpoints so good notes during lectures are critical.
Prof. Mason is passionate about history and teaches in an upbeat way that keeps you smiling. Great course on the weight of slavery in the U.S. You will need to work hard- take good notes, his tests are tough but manageable, nothing that'll screw you over if you pay attention. Keep up on readings and cite evidence with your responses and u chillin!
I loved this class. The only thing I would say about professor Mason is that he's one of those professors that are determined to not let you get an A in their class at all costs. Amazing lectures though. I learned a lot.
I really wanted to like this class. Tests are incredibly vague and old fashioned. Prof Mason is very, very political. I often felt like I was learning about what HE thought happened vs what actually happened and why. Seems like a good guy, but I can't say I would recommend this class to anyone.
We had a few books to read. All books were quite interesting. Lecture heavy. Group projects occasionally. Class was sometimes really fun, most of the time it was just powerpoints and lectures though. Decent prof. Funny.
Super funny and interesting lectures. I feel like I gained a lot from the class. But exams were 65% of the grade, and I had a hard time with his testing style so I bombed the first test and never got my grade back up(straight A's never had a B). Don't be afraid to ask TA about what they look for in test answers. Overall great class and professor.
Dr. Mason is a super smart, clear lecturer who is really good at answering questions and facilitating group discussions. The books we read for this class were very interesting. He's a hard grader, but he's totally willing to provide feedback, especially in office hours, which helped me grow as a writer. Midterm and final are hard, but doable.
Professor Mason is a demanding teacher, but he is clear in his critiques and you submit enough low-stakes writing assignments before papers and tests that you have a good idea of what to do before you get to that point. There is a LOT of reading, but I've used the books we read for years afterwords because he chooses good books. Good lecturer.
I really enjoyed his Civil War class. I'm new to the history major, and he really inspired me. Some of the upperclassmen in my class complained that he's hard and inconsistent grader, which honestly he is at times. He gives good feedback on assignments though, and he pushed me to new heights of excellence.
This class was a big womp womp. HARSH grading and stressful tests. Mason was also VERY political. I'm a Conservative student, and I hated sharing my opinion in class cause he always dissed Conservative ideas. Don't expose yourself if you're a Conservative or disagree w/ him. He didn't teach history; he taught his opinion. Politics RUINED the class.
Professor Mason's lectures are engaging, but his testing style can be quite challenging. Using unstuck AI along with the textbook helped me prepare better for the exams. Overall, a rewarding class if you stay on top of the work.
Many of my classmates agreed he is objective in the way he grades things, doesn't set clear expectations, and could be more tactful when giving feedback. Will not use a rubric because he doesn't want to (his words). Didn't even say what formatting to write paper in, hardly any instructions for presentations. Uncooperative if you have accomodations.
Do NOT take this class from him if you can avoid it. You will read till your eyes bleed, and the way he tests makes it SO hard to prep for. I got an A, but killed myself with readings and test study. If you take it be prepared to write down EVERYTHING because he will choose random BS details about people and events that he will test on.
Had to GRIND to get an A. LOTS of reading + difficult exams. Vry political prof (he was obvi Liberal). As a Conservative, I felt the class was divided, and I couldn't contribute w/o my opinion being judged. Also, is it just me, or is it weird that every RMP comment talking about his disdain for Conserv. opinions has a 'dislike' on it? Seems sus.
Obviously does not care about helping his students succeed. Assigns a bunch of reading and provides little to no study helps to prepare for tests. He doesn't even provide the slides he uses in class.
This class was so hard. More of a class for people who's major is history. The tests are rarely multiple choice and very hard and graded hard. Lectures rarely made sense and so you had to learn pretty much everything on your own.
I loved Professor Mason. His lectures were funny, and the reading responses were graded fairly. His tests are a little tough but if you study with the exam guides he makes, you'll do fine. Highly recommend!
