Very good and understanding professor. Would like to see his students succeed, if you go to lectures and do all your homework you will do fine in his tests. Would totally recommend him to anyone!
His work is very easy. Students in his class can get 100% in assignment by web assign which allow you to try 10 times until you input the right answer . Even exam or group work ,No challenge at all. He would answer all your questions no matter they're covered by textbook or not . Once you write down the note and pay attention, you'll be fine.
Professor Mata is very responsible, helpful, and patient. I took his Math 160 last semester and got an A. I am an international student. Beside the language barrier, I am not really good at learning math. Study the notes and do the homework, you will be fine. By the way,he won't check the hw, but it is very helpful. We do it for ourselves, not him.
Mathew Mata is an outstanding teacher. He is one of the best teachers I have ever had. Pros:He is good at communicating clearly and effectively and is good at making mathematical concepts easier to understand and visualize. He is courteous and (too) compassionate towards his students. Cons:He doesn't curve and doesn't give extra credit.
Prof Mata summer class was boring but very straight forward. He gave out a decent amount of homework and there were few quizzes. There were hardly any test and they weren't long. He'll tell you exactly what's on the test so if you study you'll pass with a good grade. Overall, he is a bit boring but he thoroughly goes over the material so take him.
He is not clear at all, rushes through class as is he has some were to be . gives a quiz before he teaches the topic so you go in blind. Homework is nothing you learn in class. taught the spring semester as if it was a summer class.
Professor Mata is one of the best math professors I have ever had. Business Calculus, although I hear is easier than regular calculus, is not a class you can slack off in. It is possible to receive an A, but you must work for it and spend many hours studying. He is clear and willing to answer all of your questions. I would take him again.
I'm currently taking his class, im debating on dropping, he is very tough and will make it hard for those students who arent great in math. I left math 40 with an A. He gives quizes every Tuesday and homework is due every Thursday, this class causes stress for those who are weak in the subject. He is very fast...
He knows the subject well. Unfortunately, his teaching method is not great. I found myself rushed, trying to keep up with his notes, and before I could comprehend them he was already talking about something else. The only way you know how well you're doing is when you receive your tests scores, after the fact. Unless you love math, good luck.
Teaches to fast for those having a hard time. Quizzes on things that are not ever gone over in class. Homework is due before you even have time to understand the material... He is more interested in writing on the board playing with numbers and using words not explained than really TEACHING it to you. Worst class ever.
He is such a generous professor. I left one whole question on the quiz empty because I had no idea how to approach it. so i wrote some random formula, and he gave me some credit for trying. The content of the class might nto be easy, but he will help if you need, and he will be generous enough for you to keep you trying.
He lets you out of class early sometimes, and he teaches in a way that it works at other universities. He does his lecture, you're expected to take notes and use it to do HW and prepare for other assignments. He curves a lot, which is good!
His class is definitely a tough one, but he's one of the best higher division math teachers there is. He curves the final to your advantage, and he sets up students for success, but only those willing to work. You are given weekly homework and quizzes. His teaching style is honestly pretty tough to understand, but he knows his stuff.
Dr. Mata is a very smart professor, you easily tell it by just looking at him. His lectures are sometimes boring but he is very clear, and also very respectful to students. He won't roll his eyes or sigh when a student asks an "obvious" question, he's quiet but very friendly once you talk to him. He wants students to pass, but beware of his exams!
His lectures are fast paced, so if you are a student whose slow at math your gonna have to put in extra work. His office hours helps if you need clarification on anything you do not understand. Quizzes are pretty easy since he uses the same problems from the classwork. His tests are SUPER LONG, so if you are slow at math than take someone else.
Professor Mata is a nice guy, he is hard to understand but with the help of the SI sessions it becomes way easier than it is. He offers a generous amount of extra credit which helps a lot because NO ONE gives math extra credit so that says a lot about how much he cares for his students:) Don't expect an easy class this is college. TAKE him.
Too serious for his own good. He will never crack a joke or laugh. He's a young guy who obviously doesn't have much experience under his belt, and it shows in his teaching. He simply rewrites, verbatim, whatever he has on his notes and rambles on without any class engagement. Is he a bad professor? No. Is he or his class enjoyable? Not at all.
He lectures through about half the class. Very dry lecture. Gives the remaining class time to work on HW. 25+ problems of HW and 25 problems of extra credit for each section. Tests are tough and make up 75% of the grade. Extra credit totaled 7.5%. Every week there is a quiz. One question is given, one comes from assigned work. He knows his stuff.
He knows the materials well and explains everything so well. You have to try in order to fail the class.
This guy wants you to pass. He drops your two lowest quiz and homework grades. Optional classwork is given for each section but DO THE CLASSWORK. Quiz questions come straight from it and it can be turned in each test for a lot of extra credit (10% of the test to be specific). He lectures fast so use his office hours if you're not a fast learner.
Took this professor for Winter. Almost did not pass but thanks his help and his generous extra credit, i was able to pass. I would recommend him forsure.
I took his class for winter 17. He teaches the class with the notes he wrote. He doesn't seem like professional professor. But you do not need to worry about homework. Homework is optional in his class which is good. He gives partial credit.
Good teacher, but lectures for only half of the given time, so he goes through the material extremely fast. The other half of class is dedicated to class work where you can ask questions and such. Doesn't slow down enough to explain in detail. Have to complete all homework and classwork, as well as pay close attention during lectures.
Took a while to get used to his teaching style , but overall a great teacher. Very knowledgable man, extremely nice and will answer all of your questions without making you feel stupid like other professors.
Personally, I didn't enjoy his class b/c he reads straight from his notes the entire class which, in my opinion, makes for a very boring lecture. However he's very nice and never makes you feel bad for asking an "obvious" question. Makes himself free if you need extra help/explanation. HW not required. Take home quizzes. Final is half take home
His lecture is so boring. Leaving 5 minutes early marks you as absent. Tests are way harder than the homework. Don't take him unless you are good at math.
The dude lectures nonstop with a 12 minute break in a 2 hour class. Class can get boring but the class is fair. Take home quizzes were essentially the homework for the class, they were due once a week, every week, even on days when there were exams. Honestly just a normal, fair class. Come in, do the work, get the grade you deserve.
Took a 6 week summer course w Dr Mata. At first, it was a bit intimidating due to the speed of his lectures, but once we started asking questions he would slow down and go more into detail. The class does Move quickly. 2hr class was 1hr of lecture & 40 mins of classwork/ask questions. Late / leave early counts as an absent. He drops after 3.
This is my second semester taking Mata for mathematics. All I can say is this guy wants you to pass. His tests look just like the homework problems, gives good amount of extra credit, and his homework packets gives you a boost on your grade. His lectures are pretty fast paced but if you ask him to slow down he will, easy as that.
He reads straight from his notes during the entire lecture. He is fast paced & does not explain everything step by step in detail. Homework does not count. Class work counts as credit. Tests are long & way harder than the examples he gives & the class work. Don't take his class unless you are excellent at math. I should have dropped.
Professor Mata is a great teacher. I have gotten so many mixed reviews from him. But after the class was over, I appreciated him a lot. He really does want you to pass the class. Gives so much extra credit if you're willing to work for it. He does read straight from his notes but if you're willing to study the hours you have to, you'll be fine.
Dr. Mata is extremely knowledgeable in terms of mathematics. He is also very professional. If you want to pass the class with flying colors, you must do the homework that he assigns because it provides extra practice, and he offers help during office hours and class time if you have any questions about the homework or worksheets.
The lectures include a lot of example problems, and his worksheets offer a chance to really go over all of the material to be sure you're solid on it, and they're honestly there for pointage padding for your grade. The quizzes once a week help spot problem areas too--helpful before a test. If you have questions, he's very approachable.
The class went from 40 people on the first day, to 17 on the day of the final. Do not let that deter you! His class is not difficult, although at times he may skip steps while working out problems. IT IS IN YOUR BEST INTEREST TO ASK QUESTIONS! Stop him right away if you need to. Engage yourself as a class with him, thank me later.
definitely not great for those students who tend to need a bit more of explanation. he reads straight from notes and goes extremely fast. he also doesn't require the textbook even though it's on the required list. assignments pile up fast especially if you are confused.
Matthew Mata has been the BEST math teacher I've ever had in my education experience! He not only answers every question you have with detail, but he provides many examples with every topic introduced. He was very cooperative, professional, and knew his topic very well. The book was rarely ever needed for me since the notes he gave us sufficed!
I didn't think his class was challenging because I took calculus in high school and the material is exactly the same, if not easier. A lot of people were struggling, but as long as you do the homework and understand it, you'll score well on the exams. Straightforward class, would definitely take him for higher level courses if he taught them.
Had Mata for 2 classes. Math165 and Math130. The classes are lecture heavy, but easy to keep up with. Quiz every week based on the worksheets. Gives brownie points on exams if he sees you are on the right track even though you didn't get the right answer. Gives time during class to work and ask questions. Would definitely recommend him.
This Professor is the absolute worst he goes way to fast, which doesn't give you enough time to grasp the concept he's going over. The quizzes you get every week count for very little of your grade, yet you spend so much time trying to get a good grade on them. The only he does that helps the students is give us a cheat sheet to have on the exams.
Would not recommend this class for anyone who is not a math person. You are going to spend hours studying AND having to teach yourself the material b/c professor does not slow down. There are at least 2 sections being taught per class period and none of it is ever reviewed. No mock exams, no study guide, just a list of sections for the final exam.
While Mr. Mata does a fair job teaching the material, be prepared for inanely difficult tests worth lots of points that take the entire class period. I'll also add that he does skip steps from time to time, which if you don't fully understand the material you may be lost. Textbook/hw optional and gives extra credit on quizzes which helped somewhat.
do not take him. fair warning guys. youll spend the semester regretting. if hes your last choice please wait till the next semester before you take the class so you will get a better teacher. it is a 5 unit class and flunking would flunk your gpa
Don't choose this prof. If 5 class late for 10 min, will add it and become an absence. lots of notes in class and NO take a picture with phone. MUST copy all the note! Exam: must be written every step, like 3 + 3 6, if 6 will lose points. arrives on time, will take the quiz in the last 30 min. If people late will take the quiz to begin class.
Not compassionate at all! Expects everyone to be a math genius! There's a reason why more than 70% of the class failed the 1st exam and 50% of the class failed the 2nd exam! Very disappointing doesn't grade on a curve! And beware he gives 23pt math problems on the exams! If math isn't your strongest subject DO NO TAKE HIM! no answer key for the HW
Doesn't review things teaches as if you already know. Rude in office hours (rolls eyes at you) No answer key for hw. Class started with 40 people, ended with 15. Doesn't curve even though class average for exams was <60%. Exams are 12 pages EXTRA CREDIT, QUIZZES, HW ARE WORTH A LOT BUT TESTS ARE VERY HEAVY. I got a C only because I went to tutoring
Professor Matta is probably not the best choice. I had him during the pandemic and unfortunately he did not adjust well. It is clear that he had never used Canvas because he could not input grades. Also gives 80 problem homework. Would never get back to me about question on his grading. Lastly he just scans his notes, doesnt teach anything it.
Dr. Mata has done an outstanding job during the pandemic. He posts great video lessons on time in Canvas and posts his lecture notes , too. Most instructors don't do both. Although he gives tough exams, he gives good feedback on what I need to improve. I feel definitely prepared to take Calculus in the summer.
I took him during the pandemic. He gives good notes. He goes kind of fast. Does skip some steps, I email him & he replies with clarification until I understand. He does care! Gives extra credit opport. every quiz which has saved me. Quiz every week. HW is optional, does not grade it. But always do the HW. Quiz and exams do reflect HW and lecture!
I am glad that I took Professor Mata's Math 120 in the summer. He was very clear in his instructions unlike many other professors during the pandemic. He gives plenty of time to take exams and he is a very fair grader. I highly recommend him if you want to take math classes online!
This guy is really really smart, but would not recommend for those that do not have a strong background in trig and especially Algebra. He skips a lot of steps in his notes. I personally found that his class was difficult because of the way he teaches through his notes. If you're extremely good at math, go for it.
Not a bad teacher. Gives notes and provides explaination videos. Quizzes and homework were not bad, but I didn't feel completely prepared for the exams. Study the notes, homework, and quizzes. Show all work or else he'll take points away. Lots of time to complete quizzes/exams. Offers office hours if you need extra help.
Prof Mata is no joke & thats not only bc youll never see him crack a joke. Hes super smart, almost too much especially for those with a weak background with trig/algebra bc he expects you to know all that. He is a nice guy though but does not put up with cheating so do honest work! One of the hardest classes Ive taken, TAKES A LOT OF HARD WORK
Doesnt teach anything. Just post assignments and grade He is not made for online teaching
He goes pretty fast when he teaches and tends to skip going over basics, I personally found his exams difficult for that reason. Webassign is required to do homework and lockdown browser for exams. Quizzes are given weekly even when theres an exam the same week.
Calculus with this professor seemed impossible!! He gives a quiz every week and an exam every 2-3 weeks. His lectures aren't very helpful unless math is your strong subject. Questions on his quiz are sometimes unclear and he's a tough grader! Was failing in the first 2 weeks
I took Mata's fully online Liberal Arts math course. The lessons interested me, but expect zero outreach or comments from Professor. Zero class community, which is suitable for many. This class was just canvas and assignments and could have been taught by an AI and I wouldn't have noticed. I'm mediocre at math, but I LOVED the lib art curriculum.
If you can, do not take this class no matter what. Videos do not explain anything and questions on homework and quizzes aren't even gone over in videos. Unless your the next Einstein, you will get a 50% or lower in this class or have time to devote 3+ hours a day to this class. THE worst class i have ever taken.
Notes were terrible, lecture videos were way too long and homework doesn't have anything to do with his terrible lectures. Do not take his class.
I am doing good in Professor Mata's Math 165 class. I really like that it's on campus and much easier to learn calculus than online. His notes are helpful. He also gives tons of extra credit which helps saving me every time
Calculus is tough for me but Professor Mata is very patient explaining things. I didn't do well online last semester, but I am doing much better in his face to face class this semester. I recommend him.
He's very reasonable. Calculus is tough but he gives students many chances to pass.
Homework can be excruciatingly painful, even when you pay attention during class because of WebAssign bad vids.Requires access code for homework and book, and the book is worthless as most ordinary students struggle to understand it. He did answer every question we had which was essential, extra credit earnable on all quizzes, and rounded my grade.
Not a class you can slack off in, but if you pay attention in lecture and keep up with HW (or equivalently, teach yourself and take notes from the book) you'll do fine. Dr. Mata knows his stuff, but he also tries to explain things in layman's terms. Don't give up if you have a rough start initially! I got a C on my first test and a B on my second.

He's one of the few online instructors that actually give good feedback and return assignments quickly. Very reasonable in grading and gives plenty of time for tests. If you keep up with the class, you will be do just fine.
I am taking this class on campus. It's very fast paced in the summer but he gives you many opportunities to pass. I like that he gives more than just exams and also extra credit too.
Umm his teachings were really easy to follow and there were many chances, there were many opportunities for extra credit. Each quiz that he gave there was an extra credit question. If you did enough extra credit you could literally even it out with exams. He also answered any questions students had very clearly.
He's really reasonable as a grader and gives good lectures. I will take him again if he teaches another class.
so much hw do not take
I was nervous for this course as I am not good at math and calculus seemed scary, but the content was not as difficult and he was a great professor! Straightforward with lectures and is chill. This is a class you will need to dedicate a lot of time too and to study for. He gives extra credit every week, quizzes & HW every week, test corrections.
I am not good at math but Professor Mata is very patient and gives everyone a fair chance to pass. If you do homework, then you'll be fine on the exams.
Online requires a lot of homework but the professor is fair. He gave many chances for us to pass. I would take him again.
He explains very clearly and he is patient in answering questions. I recommend him.
He was very easy to follow in class. If you keep up with homework, you should be fine. I wish I took him for Math 165 earlier. I took it with another Math 165 instructor first but it was a mistake.
Professor Mata explained things well and wasn't ridiculous in his expectations. He understands that we are not good at math and he tried to help us. I enjoyed his class.
I was able to follow him in class. He gives good feedback and return exams quickly. It's important to keep up with homework. He gives extra credit which really helped me.
I took his face to face 130 a while back and I learned a lot from him. I knew very little algebra but he was willing to answer lots of questions in class. He cared that we understood the stuff. Take him if you want to beef up your algebra.
Online requires a lot of work but I really like the format of his class. He's a fair grader and offers extra credit, too. Gives feedback right away. If you keep up with the videos and do homework, you should be fine.
Calculus in the summer was a lot of work but Professor Mata was very fair. I highly recommend him.
I took him for Math 165 in the summer. It was very doable because he has reasonable expectations of us. He gives many chances for us to do well and he grades lots of assignments. I heard from my friends that some professors don't grade anything. I'm glad that I took him. I would take him for statistics if he were teaching it.
If it is as important to you, as it is to me: this professor is using lockdown browser for online classes. I saw this mentioned in another review but it was old, so I had to find out if he was still. Anyway, quizzes about once a week, sometimes an exam also. The textbook is about $111 and HW is about 40+ points/questions. Good luck, everyone~
Good teacher to take business calc. I dropped the class strictly due to mental health. Nothing against the teacher buisniess calc just really hard
He does use lockdown browser and webassign for hw and textbook access, but I didn't really have any problems with the class itself. The weekly quizzes are 1 question per subtopic covered that week, the midterms and final exam weren't too different from the notes given, and a study guide for the final is provided. Overall a pretty reasonable prof :)
I'm not the best in math, but Professor Mata was amazing. He's very patient and cares about his students' education. He gave extra credit problems on every quiz. No notes are allowed in quizzes, but exams are acceptable. There are four exams and the final exam (if you do well) will drop your lowest exam. Office hours and studying will help you pass
don't take this class, one of the worst teachers ive taken
DO NOT take him during Winter, has no understanding of time management and expects you to do an unfair amount of HW (50+ hours/week). He accuses people of cheating every semester and punishes the entire class. He took away our "notes sheet" privileges for the quizzes and exams leaving you up to your memorization skills in an already short semester.
I had to study a lot to understand calculus but Professor Mata was extremely helpful. He gave us many chances to do well. I would take him for another math class if I ever need one.
Finished with less than 1/4 of the class at the end. It's difficult if you don't have strong knowledge in algebra. Don't join just because you think it's online you can cheat and pass he will catch you which lead to many in the class failing out everything is on lockdown browser. Don't take unless you can pass genuinely.
This class was tough but it's doable if you can keep up with the videos. Online learning is difficult but the professor was super helpful.
This is a good class to take if you're not very good at math. I understand his lectures more than other math professors. I would take another class with him if I need it.
I can't say this class is easy but the professor is nice and gives us many chances to improve. I understand him well and he's better than most professors.
This is college so work is expected. Class is decent if you put in the time like I do. I recommend taking this professor.
This class is very doable online. You have to put in the work but professor is nice. Take it if you are not gifted in math like me.
Dr. Mata is a great person and a wonderful teacher. He has infinite patience with students. I wish more teachers are like him.
A good class to take. Not too easy and not too hard. He grades fairly. I recommend taking him.
W professor, I took him hybrid & highly recommend. Very patient and willing to help students until they understand the material. LOTS of extra credit, weekly quizzes, 3 midterms, final was 2 parts, half online, half in person. Uses webassign for homework, & he answers hw questions within 1hr. His notes are clear and basically replace the textbook.
He skips steps while teaching you the math problem
Professor Mata was the best math teacher I've ever had. All the material is explained really well, if you don't understand something he'll try to re-explain in a way you'll understand. There's a quiz everyweek, but he gives extra credit on them. Pay attention and study your notes and you'll do well. Amazing professor I recommend him to everyone.
He is the best teacher that I have ever had. He was very patient with the class and answered all of our questions. I highly recommend him.
If you see this rating, you've probably seen other okayish ratings so take to read this one too, Many other professors are better than him and if you've seen the other bad reviews, they are all true, he has changed barely anything to help his students, and the homework is outrageous with Cengage (I hate that website), Just don't take him...
I highly recommend him. Prof. Mata is very patient and can explain math to someone who is not good at math like me.Take him!
You can't miss class and if you do you'll probably be lost. You must pay attention closely to understand. Will keep a close eye if he thinks there is any plagiarism.
He is the best teacher he can explain anything and make it seem easy and better, especially for me to understand the topic. He is patient and doesn't mind if you ask questions throughout the lecture. The homework is so easy, and he gives you a week to do it. His weekly quizzes are mostly only two questions and are even easier. I recommend it!!!
Has you use a web camera and lockdown browser for exams and quizzes. Assigned 8+ hours of homework, which is average, but also assigned quizzes at the end of the week. He isn't very direct or clear at times when explaining things. He also uses very technical terms and has a lot of confusing repetition in his very long lectures. He's eh.
Course jumps straight into subjects without any kind of lead up causing students to have to play a game of catchup. Also a very very strict grader.
As someone previously mentioned, he jumps right into the subject without any kind of basic intro or review. In his class it's expected to remember previous algebra concepts because he won't bother explaining or refreshing your memory. He's very strict with grading. Uses lockdown browser. Calc is already hard but he makes it worse tbh.
Always happy to answer questions and break down strategies. He teaches quite fast though. He always gives about a 10-minute break in class which I liked. Homework load is pretty fair. The concepts of the class are difficult, but he gives tons of extra credit which makes the class very passible, if you put in the work.
Professor Mata is great at explaining concepts and provides many opportunities to succeed. Attendance is mandatory, but worth it. Unstuck ai was a huge help for practice problems and exam prep.
Do everything in your power to NOT take him! If you absolutely HAVE TO take him may god have mercy on you. His lectures teach you nothing. The homework was extensive and just as uninformative as the lectures. He would throw tantrums over the class not performing well and asking each other for help.
He hits the ground running, but he will answer any question no matter how silly it may seem. Gives insane amount of extra credit (got a C on first exam and still ended w/ an A). Lectures are packed with info, but take good notes and review after and you'll be good. If you struggle with math, study ahead of exams and make a good note sheet.
His tests are really hard and the quizes and hw is nothing like the test. He is nice and approachable but he moves fast in lectures and doesn't explain content well. as a buisness major you do not have to take a precalc class but he teaches like you should have. He would sweat a lot too which was distracting. Gave extra credit though.
I took Dr. Mata for his hybrid 190 last summer. The videos were good, but he still explained stuff in class. I needed explanations so hybrid worked for me. I liked coming to campus only twice a week during summer. I recommend him. I would have taken him if he taught 191.
This is definitely a hard class we finished with ~40% of the original class size. The tests and quizzes are far harder than what he prepares you for in class. The homework is on cenegage which I loath far more than words can describe. He is genuinely helpful and his lectures are informative, but does not prepare you for what he tests for.godhelpyou
I'm not the best when it comes to math, but this professor was incredibly supportive and kind. It's not an easy class by any means but he gives lots of opportunities to make up the points you might've missed on exams. If I were to do this class over again, I would go to his office hours and get more help early on.
