AWESOME TEACHER! Extremely helpful when you are in dire need! Thanks!
good teacher. knows what he's talking about. just read & go to class.
very good teacher, knows what hes talking about, just read and go to class
easy class, but you gotta deal with his opinions
very helpful teacher, do the work, attend the classes, and you'll succeed
Great Teacher very helpful, and interesting material.
Closed Minded but Smart
he is really interesting

very easy grader. interesting prompts, lots of chances for re-writes
Good teacher but closed minded, easy class and teacher, easy A if you work hard!
Excellent professor. Well organized and prepared. Easy grader, but gives lots of assignments. Paper rewrite opportunities and one paper extension. Topics and issues covered were interesting and revelevant to life.
costello is a really nice teacher. i had him my first semester at state and he was always there to help out when you had any questions.
Professor Costello is one of the best. I took Writing 200 with him and I wish I had known about him sooner to take RWS 100 with him. He is one of the most accesible and if you ask him to revise your essays be4 U turn them in you'll be fine.
I took him at a CC, before coming to SDSU and he is amazing! I learned so much about how to write a good paper. Realy pay attention to all his advice on writing and at the end of the term you will be rewarded. And his prompts are cool too!
very opinionated, unclear, and unhelpful
cool class. the essays (only 3-4 pgs each) he assigns are really easy and simple, the topics are actually good and not redundant. he gives a an extension and 2 revisions for papers of your choice. hes very opinionated and slightly closed minded though.
My favorite professor so far at SDSU. He's extremely liberal, but he'll listen to your arguments. The prompts for the essays are really interesting and fun. He knows his stuff and is really clear. DON'T be afraid to ask for help. He is always willing
this man is awesome. everytime we write an essay, i call home to tell the folks how great it is to write about something interesting.
Very negative. Does not listen to anyone's opinion because he thinks he's always right. Pretty easy class if you stay focused, but he is not the best teacher! Try to get someone else, he can be your last resort!
Very liberal and opinionated. Very helpful and has 5 papers, 3-4 pages long per semester. Probably one of the best RWS teachers at state. EC opportunities.
good guy. very liberal and expresses his opinions. Only write 4 3 pg paper all year. basically no final. write papers to his opinions and you will get a good grade.
Just go to class cause there is a participation grade and you can have a min. of 5 absences. He seriously takes roll everytime. He is really opinionated, but just pay attention and take notes. Highlight stuff..He likes "active reading"
pretty good teacher, got what i thought was an easy A. 5 essays, grades fair, but if u get bad grade, u get 2 revisions for better grade, no tests, some quizes so do the reading. final is simple. very liberal,he talks so u don't have too, works for me
He is a great teacher, the class only consist of five essays, three quizzes, and participation basically! The subjects you talk and write about are interesting and not the boring Socrates subjects. He makes class fun and the class is a piece of cake!
Easy class if you enjoy writing. Five short papers. The section on writing at work (resumes, personal statements) was extremely helpful. Laid back class, discussions are great. Save a rewrite or extension for the end of the semester. Knows his stuff.
Interesting topics for papers, nice guy...extremely opinionated though. Tough for a yong republican to make it in his class, but managed to do well despite biting a whole in my tongue.
EASY!! I am one not to write well and I still pulled a B in this class. All 5 of his essay's are only 3 pages long. Attend to get participation points. CAKE and best RWS professor
Not a hard class. Useful assignments. Takes attendance for participation. A few pop quizzes that aren't worth a lot, but add up quick. 5 three page papers, but not very difficult. A little too politically opinionated.
Cool professor, easy class. Interesting writing topics, and the section on resumes & application letters was really helpful. Four 3-page essays, no tests. If you need to take a RWS course, definitely take it with Matt Costello.
He's cool but sometimes a jerk. His papers are kind of hard, but if you ask questions he'll for sure help you out. make sure to read the articles more than once
Not a hard teacher but not an easy one. Stay on top of work.
nice guy easy essays allows rewrites, extra credit, Very helpful when you go to office hours.papers are very helpful,
he's a good enough teacher, but he has a really bad attitude and a bad personality. expect him to be a smartass (but not in a good way)
Prof. Costello is great. Assignments are very relevant to contempary topics and he is clear about what he expects. Wouldn't call his class hard as he is a very fair grader but you do need to write decent (but short) papers. Funny guy, good sense of humor and if he shaved off his goatee he would be a cutie.
Great professor.
good teacher. allowed to skip up to 4 classes w/out point deduction. have extensions and revisions. helpful and informative
I took him over summer, assigns a 3 page paper a week, total of 5. He teaches from a liberal perspective, but it does not hurt your grade to articulate an opposing view. Most other RWS classes require ALOT more writting, and grade much harder. Overall he is a nice guy, kind of smart ass, but nice about it. A good and fair teacher.
I wouldn't say the class is easy since he grades a little tough, but he gives you opportunities for revisions. Funny guy who makes the class interesting. Take him!
My friend and I almost got in trouble in his class once for doing homework together. He let us off with a warning. I don't think he's that lenient anymore. Back in the days his class was a lot of work but very easy papers to write. It's beter to write 10 easy papers than to write 4 really hard papers.
This guys is the bomb. A lot of stuff he lectures in class is both entertaining and helpful in real life esp. udnerstanding the truth about TV and advertising. He grades a little tough, but as only you write well you'll easly pass the class. I strongly recommend anyone taking him becuase you will learn a lot stuff from him.
He's such a cool dude. Very dependable, organized, prepared, and very right for this job. He knows how to keep teach the material in a direct, to the point way. I definitely recommend him. he's nice and very helpful.
Matt was a cool teacher. The topics that we write about are very relevant to present-day society and do not consist of the Socrates crap that other classes focus on. Not alot of work, 4 papers, and no final! Easy A by far!
This class is the best RWS305w class out there!! Matt is cool and makes the class interesting. Topics are no bs william shakespeare, literature, crap but more on contemporary issues. No in-class timed writings. not a lot of work. I soon realized a lot of work done in class are designed to prepare you to write papers. Very easy A if you write well!!
Man, after getting an 8 on WPA, i thoguht i was a gonner. However, after taking RWS 305w, with this dude i realized that the 8 was overall worth it. Man, Matt is one of the best professors you have to take at SDSU for clearing the GWAR. His methods of teaching is excellent, stuff he covers is relevant and entertaining/amazing, also it's easy 2 pass
Matt is a great teacher! He's always on topic but never boring. He wants you to earn an A and will give you a re-write option and extra credit opportunities. Though I was disappointed by my WPA score, I really didn't mind taking his class at all.
He's very helpful and cares about his students. Interesting lectures.

Great professor. He cares about students doing well in his cass and will help them do so. Gives interesting lectures on pretty important issues. Take his class!
Material is very interesting. Class can be boring though. Simple and helpful class if you are taking it for the GWAR. 4 2-3 page papers, resume, cover letter, thats it! super easy. cool guy.
Amazing teacher! very knowledgeable about what he teaches and is very clear on what he is looking for when he grades. he was not the easiest grader and i had to work even for a B. 4-5 essays, 4 pop quizzes, takes attendance. overall, not too bad and do-able. deducted a lot of little points for dumb things that added up though. great teacher though
He was a nice and easy teacher, but took off stupid points for little stuff. Was very biased on liberal issues and told students they were wrong if they believed any differently. His exact words were, "You are not allowed to have an opinion." We were talking about evolution vs. creation.I don't know why we were discussing science in english class.
Matt is super chill and if ur democratic, liked Al Gore's movie, and believe in evolution then this is the class for you. I wouldn't say it is easy, but good thing is there are no timed writings, which was the reason we all got in this class in the first place. A couple of quizzes, a couple of 3-5 page papers, and attendence, that's it.
Great Prof. Assignments were on really interesting topics. Go to class and really do the readings. Those quiz points can add up and make the difference in the end.
This was a very easy class. E/t Costello has a liberal viewpoint, but overall class is pretty good/interesting compared to other classes where you write on boring socrates/english literature crap. Easy 3 page papers. No time writings. Attendance helps esp. for those in-class quizes based on his reader. Overall, good class to take after get 8 on WPA
His class was great. Costello makes you write practical papers such as your resume, cover letters, etc. His lectures and readings are quite interesting, specially if you're a liberal, it just affirm your information. Don't stress by taking the WPA test, just take his class on Summer. It's worth it!
His class is much more work than other RWS classes. There is a ton of work, and if you miss 20 points you already can't get an A. (the class is out of 200 points!) He is also very liberal and includes that in some of his lectures which is quite annoying. Avoid him if you don't care about RWS and just want to get a good grade and get out.
Costello's class isn't the easiest because he takes off a few points here and there which can really add up at the end. He's pretty easy on grading essays... The lowest I got was 23 out of 25 and I'm not that good of a writer. Oh yeah-- and he forces you to take a liberal viewpoint in the papers which got annoying but overall he's a good RWS prof
Hope you agree on his point of view becasue if you don't it will reflect in your grade.
An overall fair grader and good lecturer. The papers and readings he makes you do actually help and apply to current events. Makes you more aware of America's political system..Very liberal in his views though, and very outspoken. If you're a conservative republican, it will be a challenge to sit still in this class with your mouth shut, lol.
nice, easy, but this is not an RWS class. He teaches nothing about RWS or improving your writting for that matter. He can be offensive with his views, b/c he feels his are the only that matter. Bottom line, if you want to improve your writing, don't take his class. If your a liberal,& want to listen to another liberal's point of view he's great!
Loved LOVED this class! Costello is extremely helpful and friendly. His prompts are crystal clear and you can even email him your paper to proof read before you turn it in!
Cool teacher, gives a lot of chances to turn in work. very helpful. take this class :D
Easy class. Cool Teacher. Laid back style. One extension per semester. Four fairly easy essays. Four excused absences. Quizzes are hard though, but class is overall fair.
SUCH AN EASY CLASS!! he doesn't use the schools curriculum so don't buy the books. and because he doesn't use the curriculum it is ridiculously easy. I improved a lot on my writing in this class because I got to write about interesting stuff that really applied to today. If you are very conservative you may bump heads.. just so you know.
Costello is a chiller. Teaches about stuff going on in today's world and then write essays about it. No tests, a little reading, just put effort into essays. If you're liberal then you will especially like this class.
class was laid back and was easy enough. he gives an essay for each month and they werent that bad. helps to go to class cause what he talks and reviews over are exactly the essay content. the theme of the class was heavily political and media based, but surprisingly easy. i became a better writer cause of it. in the end he wants you to get that A!
I took this class over the summer and it was a piece of cake. There was some essay/reading almost every single night, but it never took that long. I also like how Mr. Costello incorporates real life stuff into his class: global warming essay, resume, cover letter, etc. No timed writing, no tests. If you need to take this class, I highly suggest taking him!
I liked him a lot, the class was actually interesting because it was relevant to actual life. You don't necessarily learn a whole lot about writing but I gained a new perspective on things, and it was a fun class. Easy, too.
Good lord, if you like English don't take his RWS 100 class, which is essentially a media studies class. If i WANTED a media studies class i would have TAKEN a media studies class. His class is pretty much solely based on how f*cked up mass media is. And that's it. Just different reiterations of that. I just want to learn how to write better.
Don't take this if you don't want a hard class where you actually learn stuff that matters.
this class was great he is very interesting and teaches about relevant important stuff you really do not learn anything about writing. class is mandatory. this class was really easy. an A is obtainable if you do good on the essays and quizzes really great teacher TAKE HIM
Class is pretty easy, but being in class is boring and seems pretty much useless. All the papers are on semi-interesting topics so writing them isn't terrible. He also cares more about the content of papers more than things like grammatical errors. Overall, good professor.
Very Very bias teacher. There is absolutely no critical thinking at all in this class. Not a good teacher at all. Attendance is mandatory. DO NOT TAKE HIM unless your a sponge and agree with everything he says.
VERY VERY LIBERAL TEACHER. Goal is to teach his class HIS political viewpoints only. Rewrite exactly what he believes and you will get a good grade. Felt like a poli sci class.
very easy. EXTREMELY EASY. feeds you the information.
Class is easy. Just agree with his views in your papers and you will get a good grade. Content is more important than grammar.
He's a pretty cool professor. He picks on grammar but it doesn't impact your grades as much. Just make sure you do the readings because he does give out quizzes. The readings aren't that hard or lengthy either.
CRAZY liberal man. DO the readings, he gives pop quizzes. DO go to class, you can only miss like 3 or 4.DO the papers on time. He gives an extension, DONT disagree with him, This class does not prepare you for the WPA.
Awful teacher. Extremely liberal and loves to give detailed pop quizzes about 10 paged readings he assigned two weeks prior. Lots of reading assignments. Almost impossible to get an A in this class. DO NOT TAKE!
He's an extreme liberal and makes fun of other beliefs. He teaches you liberal beliefs and then has you write papers regurgitating the info. Impossible pop quizzes, but won't kill your grade.Confusing prompts but go to office hours and he'll tell you exactly how to write your paper. Not many people seemed to get As but I did with not much problem.
Worst RWS Class ever! Got A's on all my essays but stupid pop quizzes which are so specfic screwed me over to a C! Write and talk like you're a liberal then you'll be good. He also has the most annoying beaver laugh and buck teeth to go with it.
Absolutely hate writing but I was actually interested on the topics we had to write about. We mostly wrote about media and propaganda. Gives you all the notes and information you need for your essays so you just need to know how to use it. Grades kinda hard, 4 essays, 4 10-point assignments, 4 pop quizzes SO YOU MUST ATTEND CLASS REGULARLY
Make sure you write what he wants or else you will get a bad grade. He grades really hard so make sure punctuation and grammar are perfect or you will get minus points. final was an on demand essay, whereas other rws classes did an essay of your choice.
Very nice teacher, but class was hard. Attendance is a must, you get four detailed pop quizzes. MAKE SURE YOU DO ALL THE HOMEWORK. Ten pointers and essays seem easy but he grades harsh, make sure you follow the rubric for grading/prompt. Do not need any books for class, he will tell you to buy Book from CalCopy.
TAKE HIM!! This class takes some work and you'll definitely have to buy his reader. If you do the work, you'll be fine. Only homework is to read and a couple of papers. If you're not doing well on those just ask for help..he's VERY good about that. Few pop quizzes can screw you over but that's really the only downside to this class
If you do not like writing take his class. There are four essays and four reading responses but he lays them out for you. To guarantee an A on the reading responses and essays go to office hours! The pop quizzes are challenging so do the readings! I despise reading and writing but went to office hours and got an A.
Very easy class. 4 Main essays worth 30 pts each, 4 10 pointers, and 7 pop quizzes on the readings. Thoroughly explains the topics, reviews articles, and goes through step by step what he expects on essays. Got A's on every single paper I turned in. Assigns the major essay and gives you the wed and fri off to write it. Class was so easy TAKE HIM
Awesome teacher, not a hard grader at all just do the work and show up. He literally spells out what you need to do on your essays. only book you need is the one he puts together for you about 30 dollars. around 5 pop quizs and i think 4 10 point papers and 3 essays and 1 final essay. easy A!!
Average to below average teacher. Attendance is a must. If you need this class to meet the graduation writing requirement then I highly recommend taking it with another teacher!!
Requires attendance and reading is mandatory. However, a very helpful and enjoyable professor. The quizzes are simple if you read the material, and the essays topics are fairly easy. He grades fairly easily, and you should have no problem passing this course. He truly wants to help you succeed. I highly recommend him.
Costello is a great instructor. He cracks jokes sometimes, but the whole class goes silent. There is a course manual he puts together for you to buy in which most of your work in and out of class will be done to turn in. He has pop quizzes like crazy! Work hard on your essays and you should be fine. Ask him for help, he's willing to listen.
His class is pretty chill. He takes attendance and class is REALLY boring- all you do is read articles and go over them. But overall the class is pretty easy. 3 essays and 1 in class essay for a final, 4 mini assignments & 4 pop quizes- chill class though
This man is the most pretentious liberal I've ever met. Politicizes class discussions unnecessarily and wastes a lot of class time. He's better than a lot of the other teachers for this course, but hard to stomach. Quizzes are ridiculous, papers aren't too bad.
Great class just have to actually read the articles he assigns.
Class is pointless and boring but you get attendance points for going. 4 Essays and 10 point assignments which were most mostly easy, pop quizzes kill your grade if you don't have a great memory. Mr. Costello is very approachable and is always willing to help during office hours. This is by no means an "easy A" class, you got to work for it.
Mr. Costello is a great professor, there's 3 essays and one in class essay final, four 10 pointer writing assignments, and 4 quizzes. He is always available to help you and always tells you what he wants to see on your essays. I Definitely recommend taking him.
He's a very nice and chill professor. There's only 3 essays, 4 paper assignments, and 4 pop quizzes besides the essay for the final. He grades pretty nice too. You can miss class only a few time. Class is usually spent going over articles or watching video clips. He holds a lot of conferences, which means students not selected have the class off.
This guy is easy as can be. 4 pop quizzes on the reading, which is a $25 course reader. He grades easier than any high school teacher I've ever had. He takes attendance every class.
I am glad I got Costello after getting an 8 on the WPA. Useful assignments such as resume, letter. However, class attendance is mandatory which adds up to be a lot of time during the semester. No laptops or phones during class :/ I spent a total of about six hours on all the assignments outside of class and passed. I took as P/NP
Do NOT by the key for writers. He doesnt use it. you will need to buy a book at the other book store, it isnt expensive. It will have all the articles you need to read. TAKE HIM! Hw: read & annotate the articles for that night, they are short 4- 10 pointers papers, 1 pg front and back is min; 4- quizzes basic on a article; 4- essays, 3 pg min
$30 for the course reader, ended up not using half. Should have condensed it so it's a bit cheaper. Attendance is mandatory, it's calculated under the participation score. Make sure you dont blow points on the pop quizzes and 10 pointers, easy points. I wasn't too far from a solid A. 2 Essays, one resume and cover letter.
Professor Costello is a great professor that really cares about his students. He knows the students are in a class that they do not want to take, but he tailors the class to your learning and the improvement of your future. Make sure you take advantage of each and every assignment. We only used a course reader for this class. 3 or 4 quizzes so read
Simple class. 4 10-pointers (1 page summary of 3 articles), 4 easy pop quizzes, and 4 essays. The last essay is in-class and timed. Attendance is mandatory. Do the work and you will get an A.
Costello's class is fairly easy and he grades well. If a person focuses on this class, the same as they may focus on a math or science class they have a really good chance of making an A. I highly recommend taking his RWS 100 class.
He gives great feedback but his grading is kind of tough. Dont get me wrong, he is a great professor, one of the best ive had. If you want to actually become a better writer I recommend you take his class!
He is a really well organized teacher, but everyday of class is the same and gets very boring. Class is mandatory and you can only miss 3 days of class or else your grade drops. Definitely one of my least favorite classes.
You only write 4 main essays and 4 10-pointers (mini essays). It is pretty easy to get a good grade as long as you read what he assigns and take notes in class on the questions he puts up.
Every point matters! His class goes up to about 200 points so if you accidentally miss any points you might be doomed to get a low grade. He cuts no slack. He talks forever and laughs at everything in a weird way.
I really enjoyed this class and I am a better writer because of it. Professor Costello is extremely helpful and gives good feedback. Does take attendance (required by the school) and 4 pop quizzes throughout the semester. Just do the reading.
I hate writing! Took this class in the summer to get it over with, but I ended up loving his class! He gives great feedback and his assignments are useful beyond RWS305. There were 3 3 page essays, a resume, and a cover letter. Also he requires a course reader that was only about $30.
Easy-ish. 3 essays that have to be at least 3 pages. One resume & cover letter. 3 pop quizzes & three 10-point assignments. Tough grader however. Allows you to re-do one essay for a better grade. Truly cares about students & holds conferences. Ended up with an A! He's a great guy, really liked his class & I hate writing! Only requires a $30 book.
It's an easy class if you actually go to class. He has four straight-forward essays and a four other short writing assignments. The reading is not a lot, just tiny articles. He made his own book that is super cheap.
The class is very structured and routine which i loved bc it was easy to know what to expect. Sometimes you may get bored bc it's the same thing every day but he tries to change it up a little. Easy class because the topics you write essays on are interesting and relatable. Easy A if you know rhetorical analysis. Would recommend him, I loved it
Very liberal guy who weirdly laughs way too often. Pretty much the same stuff every class. Boring, time-consuming and difficult. Pop quizzes are difficult and strange, expect many essays.
For what I was expecting for an Rws 100 class, Costello was rough. He does the usueal 4 essays, one rewrite, one extension, and very little extra credit. He is a respectable man, but he writes his own prompts for his essays. These prompts are very non straightforward and it takes hours to even start the essay. Be prepared to put in effort
Very straight forward class. 3 papers, 3 small 10-point writing assignments, and 4 pop quizzes on the reading. He makes his own book out of newspaper articles and such which are all short. There is one last 10-point assignment you do in class for the final which is then the same prompt, just add more detail. WRITE TO HIS OPINION. Boring but easy.
He has the most annoying laugh that you will hear multiple times a day. He pushes his opinions on all his students and for all assignments do NOT go against any of his beliefs he will grade your work harder if you do.
His class is very easy compared to what I have heard other RWS classes are like. He only makes us write three pages versus other teachers who expect five or more. Attendance is mandatory and if you miss it deducts your points on participation. Very good teacher to prepare you for WPA
Super easy class. If you try you will get a B, kind of hard to get an A because he grades essays a little tough. The usual homework takes 10 mins and then he assigns a few essays and writing assignments that are based on in class questions and discussions so just take notes!
Costello is clear in what he expects. He is VERY liberal, so be prepared for that. For all assignments he gives a pretty strong indication what his opinion is, so write in agreement with him and he will be a much nicer grader. For all of the writing assignments, just go to office hours and he will tell you what you need to do or fix to get an A.
Costello is truly meant to teach this course. He gives very clear prompts which makes writing essays much easier. Barely any homework. 4 two page papers handwritten and 4 three page essays but they are all straightforward. Very helpful, would take again.
I enjoyed Costello's class because the only reading we had to do was snippets of articles and the essays were on topics that were interesting and relevant. Although the way he words his essay prompts may be confusing, there are plenty of ways you can get help such as meet with him during his OH for clarification or even the one optional revision.
Articles to read every day. Papers are short, but he grades unfairly and his prompts are far from clear. Penalizes you for not agreeing with his EXTREMELY liberal views. Feels more like a political opinion class rather than writing. Gives pop quizzes on the readings. Class felt like a waste of my time and money. Had to buy book. Would NOT RECOMMEND
Very interesting topics in class. Keeps everyone engaged
Super straight-forward class. Assigns readings for hw, but they are little articles which could be read in 10 min. He gives pop quizzes on the readings so make sure to go to class. Three essays, all of which were interesting. Attendance is important as well. Overall an easy class and I would definitely take him again.
I used to love writing but Costello made me hate it. Sitting through his class listening to him complain about politics the entire time was miserable and so boring. If you write against his views you will not get the grade you like. He makes horrible jokes and laughs at them awkwardly, which gets on your nerves by the end. Avoid if you can
Expect to better yourself and learn a little more too. Costello gives extra credit for being in greek life or just joining a club. He's pretty liberal and sometimes goes on rants. Pretty easy A if you try your best and do the assignments. Don't skip class too much or it will affect your grade eventually.
costello was a pretty decent professor. you learn a lot about current issues in the country that are relevant. there are 4 random quizzes so make sure you do your reading. reading isn't that bad, usually 2 pages for hw and then a discussion in class about it. you can get a good grade if you actually pay attention
If you are a conservative, do not take Costello's class. This guy is as liberal as it gets and he focuses his class assignments around topics that are very liberal. He can be very annoying with his lectures but he honestly grades the essays really easy if you cover all the topics. There are four pop quizzes. You can only miss 3 days of class.
He was so frustrating! His grading criteria on assignment handouts and the syllabus were very general and confusing; but his actual grading and comments were very critical on aspects never mentioned in class. He is VERY condescending making it difficult to approach him with concerns. Also has huge penalties for absences.
Im an English major and I hated his course. The articles u read r so irrelevant and boring. Like cigarettes, food industry, vaccines. Theres potential for the topics to be interesting but he is very specific on what he wants in essays it feels like theres no point in writing essays. Kinda opinionated and annoying tries to be funny. Do not take him.
he has an annoying laugh when he says something that might be offensive. a bit boring but the class isn't difficult.
Classes are pretty boring but you have to show up for the attendance grade. He is very closed minded so don't plan on writing a paper that is different than his opinion or he will grade it harder. The reading is really easy and can usually be done in class however there are occasional pop quizzes. Mess up a paper don't worry, you get one revision.
Professor Costello is very passionate about the topics he teaches. Sometimes, you just have to put your opinions aside and remain open-minded. He gives good feedback on essays and is very willing to work with you to reach your goals. After a certain number of absences, points are taken, so unfortunately, as unecessary as it is at times, show up.
I loved Costello. He gave a very enjoyable class and was very fair when it came to grading. His writing assignments are very specific which in turn makes it very possible to obtain all the points. If you ever need help, he will be there and assist you in anything you need. The daily readings he assigns are very short and doable.
I loved his class. You just read interesting, relevant articles from his course manual and go over it in class. Eventually, you do essays on each section but you have so much time and help to do your rough draft and even more time to do the final essay. He does do pop quizzes that are very specific on statistics in the reading. One of the best RWS.
Very simple and straightforward class. You do the same thing everyday - read an article out of the course reader and then come to class and discuss it. He's pretty easy to talk to. He makes it clear he is liberal so if that bothers you then don't take his class. He is willing to hear counterarguments on some things though. Overall, not a bad class.
Straight forward class. You have to purchase an 80$ book that includes all the articles he makes you read and gives you a few quizzes to make sure you're reading the material. He also tends to grade harder in the beginning compared to the end of the semester. Takes attendance. He will definitely make you work on your essays to get a good grade.
Super easy class, just show up and put some effort into your work you will get an A. 4 very short papers and homework takes less than 10 min a night. occasionally very easy points pop quizzes. show up and read the one page article he gives and you will pass
Professor Costello is one of the worst professors at state. The grading for his essays are very random as he seems to not know what he is talking about half the time. Random quizzes especially after breaks about reading he assigned. Do not take this class if you want a good grade if youre a weak writer you may actually do well.
You need to buy a book that contains the readings and it costs $103. You have to actively read because he does occasional checks, you want to get on his good side since participation matters. Get involve in class. 3 essays and 1 for the final. Minimal homework. If you like to talk about politics, he is the one.
He is a good teacher although he only talks about political issues. Class is the same routine everyday, you just answer questions based on the reading in the book. There are 4 essays, one being the final which is not open book. There's 4 10-point assignments and 4 pop quizzes. Participation does matter. I would take again!
Mr. Costello is a good professor overall. He has office hours and will meet people after class and also gives good feedback on essays. The only issue I have is that be brings his political views into a lecture way to often and doesn't use blackboard.
easiest english class ever and my favorite so far. he goes over political issues that are current which makes the class interesting. There are 4 essays, 1 being the final that isnt open book but its easy since it based on a current event. A is attainable very easily but you have to pay attention and watch out for pop quizzes.
If you actually want to learn anything (the reason you are at school), then do not take this class. He uses this class to push his personal political agenda on developing minds. You have to read a new article before every class then you will spend the entire next class going over what is extremely obvious. He teaches absolutely nothing about RWS.
If you are a student who wants a fairly easy A and wants to learn nothing about how to write properly then this is the professor for you. The essays are a joke. Its pretty much you answering questions from his prompt by using specific articles. The only thing you will learn in this class is his political standing.
4 quizzes, attendance, 4 essays, 3 10-pt assignments, 5- point assignment. Straight forward, there is a curve if you do optional revision for your essay, he's laid back, really nice, and accessible. You do have to put in work (4 times a semester for the essays basically), you can easily get away with at least a B.
Such a great professor. Literally took a Friday class to take RWS with him. Super passionate about the subject, and willing to help you, and work with you. Interesting topics that actually apply to society. Attendance is mandatory though, which kinda sucks. Also, he is p liberal, so don't take if you are super conservative and easily offended lol
He's pretty nitpicky about grammar but so long as you follow the grading rubric for papers you should be fine. Attendance is mandatory and more than 4 absences will affect your final grade. My only gripe with Costello is that he doesn't use blackboard and many of the discussions and lectures could've been covered online.
Very strait forward, you know what to expect. One pop quiz a unit, easy if you read the short articles he asks you to. He makes his own text book which is pretty pricey for almost every article being available on the new york times website. Good guy, easy class, but he gets extremely political and not much of a chance for outside ideals.
Professor Costello will assign an essay per week, so be prepared to read and write a lot. His prompts at times are hard to follow and be careful to mistake his direction as he will take points away. I suggested taking another professor! There are few pop quizzes throughout the semester if you read the articles that are assigned you will be fine.
Professor Costello is one of the best professors Ive had at SDSU. Theres only 4 essays, but theres 10 pointers which are short writing assignments. His directions are specific and if you follow his guidelines then youll get an A on all the essays/assign. You also have a revision at the end of the semester, so you can revise one of your essays.
He's a good teacher, but prompts are confusing, but as long as you follow the prompt EXACTLY how he tells you to, you'll get an A on the paper. I didn't think my essay was all that great but I followed his instructions and got an A on that paper.
Professor Costellos RWS 100 class was honestly light work. His grading criteria is super clear , literally so exactly what the prompt says and you will get an A. Id recommend in your essays/ 15 pointers to agree with his political stance. He is very liberal and his class basically centers around that so if that bothers you dont take this class
attendance not mandatory but recommended! class is fun and we talked ab real world issues. costello cares ab his students and helps so much whenever you need it. 4 essays total and 4 15-point assignments (shorter essays, no intro or conclusion) highly recommend!! i even signed up for his RWS200 next semester
As long as you do exactly what the prompts say, you will get an A. Costello is a nice guy and is always there to give you feedback. The only thing is he heavily voices his political opinions, so if that doesnt matter to you then take it.
Prof Costello is a good teacher and nice guy. As long use the active reading questions to guide your essays, you will get a good grade. I also liked that we only had one zoom meeting a week which was held on Mondays. He is pretty liberal and his class material reflects a lot of current world issues. I even signed up for RWS-200 w/ him next semester
Although Professor Costello's writing style is not very conventional, I did really appreciate him as a professor. He was easily accessible outside of class and more than willing to help. He gives good feedback, so take advantage of office hours! You have to read a lot of articles, but the discussions in class are helpful for writing your essays.
SUPER clear grading criteria. Took him for RWS100 & took him again for RWS200. Amazing Professor. Clear instructions but makes his political views very clear (so maybe steer away from that if youre not fond of that). Such an amazing professor! Fair class! Offers an essay makeup at the end of semester and one extension. TAKE HIM!!!
Professor Costello is great! Hes gives awesome feedback and is super happy to help. I took him for RWS100 and RWS200 and the class is overall pretty easy. He had a very clear grading criteria. Only complaint is his political views are really clear so beware of that. Overall, hes an awesome professor and I definitely recommend him!
The semester consists of 4 essays and 4 assignments. There is a reading assignment assigned almost every class (short NY Times articles) that go hand in hand with our essay and assignment prompts. He allows for one extension and you are also able to correct one of your assignments before the end of the year for extra points. He is a great professor
Excellent teacher, there are 4 essays and 4 brief 15 pt assignments. Costello is always available to offer more help and insight and is truly knowledgeable. Attendance is extremely important and your effort will really dictate what you get out of the class. Be aware most of the articles deal with politics. Overall excellent teacher.
Super clear rubrics and prompts. You will always know exactly what you need to write about. However, little direction on how to improve your writing, but easy A if you complete all the assignments and go to class. Super nice and funny guy who cares about your success. You read a lot of articles and answer questions for HW. Good choice for 200.
There are lots of homework assignments that are fairly sismple and help pad your grade. He takes attendance but he will catch you up himself if you miss a class. He is vert kind, helpful and provides lots of feedback. I sent every essay to him and he looked it over and gave me personal feedback. Definitely an easy A.
Went in thinking it would be as easy as other RWS200 courses, but IT WAS NOT. He assigns 20 2-point assignments, 4 15-point assignments, 4 essays, and a few video quizzes. The weight distribution sucks and he is such a tough grader. He does not offer any extra credit. The articles he picks are boring af. This class took up way too much of my time.
Pretty good professor, you are forced to learn a lot in the class. There is more homework than the average RWS 200 class, must answers questions from an article for almost every class and there are 4 total essays(most have 3).If you have little homework in other classes I'd recommenced, if you do this class gets frustrating. Must put in work for A.
Great professor! Gives good feedback and wants to see students succeed. Attendance is mandatory, (class grade is affected if absent) so keep that in mind when taking morning or MWF classes. Has homework due before every class but the HW prepares you for the essays! Learned a lot! especially regarding world issues/politics.
For an RWS class, Professor Costello is very intensive in the reading aspect. If you don't do the reading, you won't do good on the assignments which, in turn, will not result in a good essay grade. So, basically, for this class make sure to have everything on time. If you don't, then the class won't be fun.
4 Essays, 4 15-Point Assignments, Lots of Reading. Make sure to take notes of readings because it will help with writing essays. Gives questions to answer while reading, super easy. Very good with feedback and always makes the effort to help you grow your writing.
Mr. C is a super nice teacher and cares about his students. The grade consists of hw, essays, and participation. He offers one extension and gives a lot of feedback for essays. Overall the class was fairly easy and would recommend.
Took him for RWS 100 and 200. He is super chill and understanding. 4 1200 word papers and 4 600 word papers but spaced a good amount apart. He doesn't grade hard and he writes exactly what he expects from the essay with what examples to do and everything so its hard to not get a good grade.
Very caring professor. Sometimes the active reads were a little tedious but that was probably because I took him for both RWS 100 and 200. Amazing English teacher though and I can't think of any other English teacher that was this caring. Awesome 100% would recommend.
Generally is a nice person that tries to be as helpful as possible. The rubrics and his writing can be hard to read because he overuses bold, italics and underlining. Writing prompts can be repetitive in certain areas and confusing. Probably take his class if you are already good at writing.
Mr. Costello is a very caring professor for RWS 100 and a great introduction for first - years taking the course. His class is repetitive and runs off 3 essays. Very organized, but you do have to show up to get participation points.
He is really nice, all of the work is pretty repetitive, 3 essays, a ton of homework assignments due every other day (except weekends), and a few 15-point assignments. He tends to overexplain sometimes or talk a lot, but it is all for a reason. Such a good guy. (Btw you usually have 2-3 days to work on essays before they are due)
Cares about students, takes attendance. You'll be learning about basically the same topic the whole semester, which sucks if you're into creative-based writing. Clear on guidelines but prompts are hard to read. The syllabus is lengthy and the active reading questions are super tedious for no reason. Nice and sociable, but wouldn't take again.
The class has a lot of reading and assignments, but Professor Costello is caring and provides great feedback. Using unstuck ai and the provided materials can help manage the workload.
Although he is a tough grader he is always very helpful and good at communicating why points were taken off. He was always willing to read over my work and give advice before submitting. Very caring and understanding if you communicate and attend classes. He is very passionate about the subject and wants his students to succeed.
I will be taking his next class RWS200 since I did enjoy RWS100 with him. Its a lot of writing and essays but he spaces it out very well and gives great feedback. SUPER easy to pass...you submit a rough draft where he gives you feedback aka tells you how to get an A on the paper then you re submit the updated paper.
RWS 100 was very enjoyable with Professor Costello, as he ensured that we understood the assignments and gave incredible feedback on how we could improve. The material we learned is also very useful to know, such as current environmental issues and how to make the most out of college.
Absolutely loved this class! He cares about his students and is available and understanding. Attendance is very mandatory, but the class is quick and easy. Assignments are very not difficult. He has one quick but mandatory meeting with each student throughout the semester, so he cancels class on meeting days. Paying attention goes a long way!
Do not take this class if you do not like writing constant papers by hand. He is very paranoid about cheating and AI which leads him to have weird rules in class. You will be writing every single day and his grading is harsh, he makes it almost impossible to get an A. His essay prompts are also unclear and he gets very mad quickly.
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU DON'T LIKE HANDWRITING AND MEMORIZATION He makes it clear he is pretty insecure about people using AI. All graded work is in class and handwritten. Almost your whole grade is based on 3 in-class essays which you have to remember news articles, and they are very harshly graded. Switch to a normal RWS100 if you have the chance
Very easy grader, gives back great feedback. You have to memorize information from articles and do them all by hand however I did not see an issue with this, do know that he is very paranoid by AI. Cares for his students and offers an optional revision at the end of the semester for an essay if you did poorly one.
Take this class if you want an easy A. Only con is that attendance is mandatory.
