Dr. Moffitt took this course over from Balfor, but didn't seem to change anything. The midterm average was still 45% and final was probably about there too. Expects you to memorize a ton of forumula, many of which are very subjective to conditions, so its very hard to memorize and know when to use it. His blackboard skills are definately lacking.

Be prepared to teach yourself everything from the textbook, because he does not do any examples in class. His lectures felt like a massive waste of time.

He is an awful professor. He doesnt at all understand how to teach effectively. Lectures felt like a waste of my time, and the tests in no way reflected what we were taught. He pretends to care but doesnt give accomodations for cal students and it seems like he wants us to fail.

Tests were literally 3 questions for a third of the course, final was 6 questions. Questions did not test your understanding of main concepts, but instead tested on the "special cases" that were shown one single time and no practice questions on them given. Formula sheet is pretty much useless and lectures are just derivations and teach you nothing

He doesn't give examples nor practice problems. Our second midterm had a problem worth 40% of the test (the test only had 3 questions) that he had not discussed how to solve, nor was it in the textbook, and only gave a practice problem AFTER the exam. He also lied to us about having examples prepared for final exam office hours when he didn't. Sad.

Writes extremely unfair exams who's content barely represents the material in his lectures and provided practice problems. He also has a tendency of going on tangents that aren't related to the course making the lectures feel like a waste of time. Do not recommend taking this course with Matt.

Not supportive of his students. The only feedback you will ever get from him if you ask him any sort of question is, not my problem email someone else. If you need help with anything he will not help you and he rambles on about useless topics

Prof. Moffitt is so kind and excited about chemistry every lecture! Never fails to make you laugh and keep you engaged on demo day. Lectures could be hard to stay focused on because he sometimes over explains to the point of confusion, but he answers everybody's questions both in class and on the discussion board. I'm excited to have him again!

Great lectures and explanations of concepts, hard tests. Often homework and practice problems do not translate to test material. Tutorials are a pain for 3% of your grade during the off weeks of labs. Quizzes are worth little as well. I wish the weight distributions changed to get a better balance. Grade is pretty much determined by exams.

I had Matt for CHEM 102, and many people liked him as he didn't have to do a lot to teach the simple concepts in that course. For the more advanced CHEM 245 however, his lack of innovative and effective pedagogical methods is obvious. At this point, the department needs to find a different professor to teach this course.

Unfair tests with very few practice problems related to tests. Irreversible adiabatic worth most of midterm 1 when we went over only one formula with little to no explanations and no practice problems over it. Had friends drop the course because its to stressful and have said they would rather do ochem than this.

CHEM245 gets difficult if you don't do hours of practice every week. Moffitt was enthusiastic and passionate about making office hours accessible to everyone. Eager to help students. The content on the tests matched practice exams and lecture content to a T. The way he taught the course made me really appreciate thermo and excited to go to class!!

Matt Moffitt is a good prof! He's really entertaining and makes it easy to get help through office hrs/discussion board. Careful, this class is tough so make sure to do textbook questions and practice often enough. Don't let the hard first midterm scare you into dropping the course. I got a 51 on it, but ended the course with an 83. You'll be fine.

This course is pretty different from the ones I've had before and the first midterm is a steep learning curve (47% av). Matt is an okay lecturer overall; his office hours are great, please go to them!! The lectures were not always relevant and certainly not succinct. Doing the practice tests is far more helpful than doing the textbook questions.

He's an okay teacher, but the material is notoriously difficult. He heavily encourages textbook problems (gives a list of ones to do), saying they are “mandatory” to do well in the class, yet some are irrelevant and others have either no answer in the key or the key is incorrect. Do the practice exams instead, they are much more helpful.

Absolutely hilarious prof who made chem a class I actually looked forward to, with lots of fun demos. Very passionate about chemistry, but speaks very loudly so if that might bother you consider sitting further back in the classroom. Explains concepts thoroughly and is always willing to answer questions, though answers aren't always helpful.

He loves the subject and loves teaching. His teaching style is not for everyone. His grading was pretty lenient. This lecture were really interesting. The midterms are tough tho. Just going to the class wont help, you would have probably have to read the textbook and do as much pratice as you can.

It was honestly hilarious for the first couple weeks until I realized that he doesn't actually teach the content. This man smiles as he gives entire lectures to watch in addition to coming to class (for him to just work on elementary practice problems), going to tutorial, and endlessly working on the practice problems. Matthew is a cruel professor!

I am a smart guy and even for me this class is frustrating. The course began very well. Then, despite doing all the homework and practice questions, mine and everyone's midterm grades declined steadily. Most recent midterm class average was 56%. Matt fails to teach and his exams feel artificially difficult. UVic needs a new thermodynamics prof.

Opinions are mixed—it feels like Russian roulette depending on the semester. My class had many grading components--made earning a decent mark easier. Final was only worth 25% which I am grateful for. Dr. Moffit is funny and seems to care about students. Still, the course is extremely hard no matter who teaches it. Keep this course layout please!
