Understood everything well and he is a very nice teacher. Definitely recommend.
He does a lot of peer review but doesn't teach a lot in class, so the peers reviewing your paper don't really know what they're talking about. He also makes you write your paper paragraph-by-paragraph which didn't appeal to my style but could appeal to others.
Love this class! The teacher was great, and nothing was too hard. Yes, we did peer review, but everyone has different learning styles so for some it was great and others it did not matter. I would highly recommend this teacher to anyone who does not like writing essays (like me). It was well worth my time and the work.
I took Matt's class for English 101 and 102. He is very understanding and easy going. I would definitely recommend him to anyone. This winter quarter I failed but not because of his doing. Excellent fun professor.
Matt is an awesome guy. His class is super easy to follow along and understand. It's not too difficult but you still learn A TON of useful, good information! Makes the class interesting with the book he uses. Super understanding guy! He's awesome! I would highly recommend taking his class!
I really enjoyed Montoya. I plan on eventually taking him again for English 102. He divides the papers up so they are not too long and overwhelming. He gives great feedback and is very helpful. There is a lot of peer reviewing, so depending on your learning style this might be a pro or a con.
I would not ever take this guy again... he is one of the hardest graders I've ever met. I scored almost a perfect score on the college placement test for English and he gave me a F or D on all my work... He seems like a nice guy cause he is shy but, BEWARE!!!!!! He doesn't explain much for why he give the grade he does, I met with him 3 times
if you ask he will help, you just need to know what questions to ask because he won't just give it to you. His class is run like a workshop more than a lecture. The atmosphere is very chill and he breaks up the essays in to easy to manage chunks. He doesn't require a in class final which takes away a lot of stress. Super nice too.
There are only 4 main essays and he breaks them down for you and works with you to create your best work.
Professor Montoya is so kind! He's quiet and soft-spoken and very inclusive. I'd recommend him to anyone looking for a good English class and lots of helpful feedback. He does all kinds of nice things and is very understanding. There's plenty of homework, but it's intriguing and I got into it! I'm making sure to take his class again :)
Overall he was a pretty good professor. Class is based around four different analysis/argument papers (1500 words), on which he has clear expectations. He has class discussions almost every day , and it's good to participate in those because he enters participation points at the very end of the quarter. He's pretty nice, reliable, and clear.
Matthew Montoya, by far is one of the best professors I've had at Columbia Basin Community College. He truly cares about every student and their success. Definitely worth taking. He is willing to help as much as he can.
Montoya is an excellent teacher, in a sense that he actually teaches you. He is extremely clear, and helps you write your papers one paragraph at a time. There is usually homework every night, and this can be very frustrating if it is taken with a heavy class load. As long as you keep up on the homework and LISTEN to his words, you will do great.
Most papers he wanted us to write were short and based articles he chose instead of making us buy a book. He is also extremely clear on what your paper should be about.
Mr. Montoya has been a great teacher this quarter, it is kind of a self motivated class so we get what we put in if that makes sense. Homework is easy points and takes less than 20 minutes. Montoya is a very tough grader, but does it to improve your writing! Just make sure you have enough time to devote to the class and you will pass easily!
Never would recommend this class !!!He is a nice professor, but he expects you to be a perfectionist when it comes to writing. Usually in my other english classes i would get an A, but in his class i would get an Low c or d.
Montoya is pretty cool likes to make jokes. he did a lot of pacing, but it gets normal after a while. Gives sample papers to show you exactly what he wants which is stellar. He also goes through the formatting on the first paper. Has a long grade turn out on papers, takes him about a week. Overall good teacher.
I loved taking this class. I was a bit skeptical because people said 102 is hard, but Mr. Montoya is the best. He helps with any questions, and clarifies all the assignments. We only have 3 main essays all quarter and he breaks it down into weeks so you don't do it all at once. I would defiantly recommend. and lenient with absences
This teacher is the best. Good feed back. He is honest with the grades. The grades are on time. He has a program since starting the first day. He explains very well. Excellent teacher.
AMAZING!!!! Such a good guy! You can tell he loves what hes teaching! He can be a hard grader but he gives really good feedback and if you follow it you will do great!
Mr. Montoya is a good teacher and his class doesn't require a textbook because he likes to use articles. I've taken his classes with him twice for Eng 101 and 102. Definitely recommend him although he writing essay for his class does require a lot of reviewing and asking questions to get an A for the class.
Great professor! He's very clear on what he expects out of you, very caring, and can be a bit of a tough grader. The only thing that wasn't "fun" was that he chose boring stories to read and write essays on. There was a like 2 interesting ones but the rest. . . . no comment. . . I recommend him and I would definitely take him again.
I loved taking Professor Montoya. He's very clear on what he expect of his students and makes assignments easy to complete. Tough grader, but he provides feedback and is there to help you if you ask.
I loved Professor Montoya. He's a very positive professor, grades fairly, helps you when needed, and is extremely fast when replying to emails. His way of teaching has helped me in so many ways. The only thing I didn't like about his class, was having to get into groups. But groups did help out on most assignments. He teaches what you need to know, not things to keep you busy. I would really recommend taking him
Amazing teacher! He left video feedback on all the papers, allowing improvement. You will learn a lot from this class, but don't expect an easy grade. He grades very strictly, but you will learn a lot because of it. As long as you work hard and put time into your papers, you will get a good grade. Just don't expect a 100%, you won't get one.
I absolutely loved Professor Montoya. I took him fall quarter for English 101 and he helped me in so many ways. He replies fast to emails, takes time to answer your questions, and teaches you what will help you in your future instead of "busy work" that won't be beneficial. I'm taking English 102 this quarter but sadly wasn't able to take his class again because of conflict in the time.
I loved Montoya's English class! He is a very kind person and wants you to succeed. He is very great at answering any questions and is clear about what he wants. He was my first professor at CBC and would absolutely take his class again.
Montoya is the best Professor I've ever had. If you can take his class do it. You will come out with a serious understanding of English and its value after this class. Montoya leads with examples and feedback from himself and the other students. Just show up to class and do his assignments and you'll destroy the next English class you take!
He is an awesome professor. Very respectful and kind and is wjlling to help as much as he can so take that offer up!
Took Matt for English 102 if you go to tutor center and apply your self no doubt you will get a 4.0 he was one of the best professors iv'e taken at CBC. Very soft spoken, sweet, and explains everything clearly. Reading and homework every night but you get 100 as long as you turn it in on time. I really like his teaching style I learned a lot!@
He's a great teacher! Easy going, really cares about you passing the class, and assignments are not that hard if you pay attention.
Mr. Montoya is awesome teacher. I learned a lot in class! He is the typical teacher who enjoys that you succeed and is better you follow his directions. He is very respectful and works one to one even if your class is 27 people.
Montoya is a wonderful professor! soft-spoken and very respectful with students. Instead of using a textbook, he uses articles which is very helpful! Has clear directions with his papers and is passionate about English and making it a fun class. Take him if you can!
Professor Montoya is amazing! He is really kind. He gives marvelous feedback as well. There are no textbooks in his class, which helps with expenses. He is accessible outside of class and will reply to email quickly. Take English with Montoya!
Montoya is by far the best professor I have ever had. Try to get him as your professor. Really clear rubrics and very good feedback.
3 outside of class essays & 2 in class essays. You will constantly be working on an essay but the topics aren't hard at all. He takes time out of almost every class to peer review with your classmates and ask him questions which helped me tons. He had 2 5 question pop quizzes on readings but they were easy. Online quizzes but can take mult. times
Mr. Montoya is amazing. He genuinely cares for his students and wants everyone to succeed and learn from his class. I took him for 101 and 102, and I would definitely recommend him to everyone. There is a lot of reading and homework, but he has it all spaced out so you don't get overwhelmed, no matter how many credits you are taking.
He is very nice teacher. He is soft spoken and really do anytghing to help you pass his class. He does a lot of homework but all to help you write your paper better. I would definitly take him again .
Montoya is a great professor, I would highly recommend to take him for English. In 101, I struggled with the essays, but I improved by a lot in English 102. When it came to grading, he was tough, but it was beneficial in helping me improve. I loved the organization he had for all assignments, it was simple and easy to follow. Highly recommend!
Mr. Montoya is super sweet, caring, and genuine! I highly recommend him! He wants students to succeed in his class! He is a bit picky when it comes to grading, but its understandable since 102 is a bit more advanced than 101. Great experience! Also, theres extra credit and he gives students the opportunity to revise 1 essay to get a higher grade!
Montoya is honestly a great professor. He really wants his students to succeed. There is about 4 essay 2 in class and 2 outside. He is a VERY HARD GRADER. However, gives great feedback. He likes to do peer review which is about 4 people in a group and you go over each other's work. I don't like to share my work so I didn't really like that.
Very tough grader, however he does genuinely care about student success and gives several opportunities to revise your essays. The class is very well paced, there is homework basically every single day, however it is not at all difficult. Overall, not a stressful class but does require a lot of effort. As long as you do your work you'll do fine.
Great feedback and available outside of class hours.
Mr. Montoya was an amazing professor! He does grade a bit tough, but he gives great feedback and tells you how to fix it. You can tell that he cares about his students and wants them to succeed. I would totally recommend him!
Montoya was clear about what he was looking for by giving us rubrics for essays and taking time in class to go over examples and mistakes that were often made. He would also give good feedback, but if you still needed clarification on some of his comments you could easily find him in his office during office hours or schedule an appt. if needed.
So far Mr. Montoya is the best teacher I have ever had. His way of teaching makes learning so easy and enjoyable. Truly, I have never had a teacher as awesome as him! He takes his time to make sure everyone understands what he is teaching. Mr. Montoya wants students to be aware of all their resources and even takes the time to meet with students.
I would highly recommend Mr. Montoya!!!! I am not the best with English but with his help and feedback, i was able to enjoy the class and learn many things. He is the best but just like any other class, if you slack and start to fall behind, then it will be a challenge but if you simply stay on top of your work it will be a good experience.
He is the best English Professor. The amount of help you get is amazing.
Great teacher who really cares about his students. He is a tough grader, but he builds in conferences (you should really take advantage of them). He spaces out his papers so you're not overwhelmed. There's a mandatory midterm, but you don't have to take the final if you socred high enough.
Mr. Montoya is a great professor. He gives great feedback to help you become a better writer. While he considers himself to be a tough grader, he gives you opportunities to re-de papers for a better grade. He also has a very clear rubric/grading criteria. Overall, a great professor and I would 100% take him again.
I loved taking professor Montoya. My English 101 teacher was great however she graded easy and didn't give much feedback. But professor Montoya gives great feedback and is an all around great teacher. I genuinely feel like a better writer. I loved how he set up our essays. I would definitely recommend this professor Montoya to everyone.
Mr. Montoya is an amazing professor! He gives clear and concise lectures, feedback, and help wherever needed. He cares about his students. 75% of the grade comes from the papers, so work hard on those. I will try to take him again for English 102!
I loved Montoyas class! He is such a caring and down to earth guy. You can tell he genuinely cares about his students well-being and wants them all to succeed. There are 3 essays for the quarter, and the topics arent super easy or fun, but he gives great feedback and opportunities to improve by reviewing in class. I would definitely recommend!
He is very kind and knowledgeable and you can tell he really loves what he does. I took his class in the fall and he did cancel class a lot for various reasons. We went 2 weeks straight without class, which made writing his essays more difficult, but he made up for it later by providing extra assistance and being clear about what he expected
Montoya is an excellent prof. Doesn't require you to buy a textbook. Additionally, if you pass the midterm, you don't have to take the final.
He doesn't grade on a lot of things so be thorough. Lot's of opportunities for feedback & breaks essays down into manageable chunks (as long as you do a little each day, you'll never have to cram). Only con was when I took his class last fall, he cancelled at least two-weeks of class total: which I feel had an impact on my grade. Final is optional.
I really do not like English. I am the type of person that will do better in Chemistry but fail at any English course. But after taking this class with Prof. Montoya I really like English! He inspired me to be a better writer, with his help I was able to get amazing grades on my papers! If you have to take ENGL 101 or 102, do it with Prof Montoya!
I loved Montoyas teaching methods for English 101. There are a few homework assignments but you are mostly graded on three papers. If you pass the midterm, the final is optional. He schedules meetings with students while writing papers and records his feedback to send to you so you can use it later. He was very sweet and accommodating to my needs
Mr. Montoya was a super helpful professor, he gives great feedback. He wants his student's to succeed and he is always giving tips on how to write better. You have to put in the work to pass the class, but overall it's easy if you put in the work. He really makes you a better writer. He's big on revision and extra credit which is super nice!
Great professor!! I took him for ENG 101. He genuinely cared about his students. First day of class he made me feel comfortable. We had quite a few essays but he graded them very well with feedback. We did groups stuff as well. Also did conferences with us one by one. I received great feedback to become a better writer and do better on my essays.
I loved this class. There is a fair amount of homework, that is due every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. It's really not too bad, and he makes writing essays a breeze with his teaching style. You do a lot of peer editing, which I always found helped your own essay, and In editing other peoples essays, helped you be able to better edit your own.
Prof. Montoya is very nice and gives good feedback on papers. But I had spent the most time on this class, as there were assignments due every Tues, Thurs, and Saturday. I'm lucky I had easier classes because this one took a lot of time. He is also a TOUGH grader on papers, but he wants all of his students to succeed. He responds fast to emails.
I think the ratings here are right on. He is very caring and kind, but you will earn your grade in this class. There are a lot of assignments and reading; it was my most time-consuming class. I don't feel like the work was in vain; I got a lot from the class, and feel like I got my money's worth.
Professor Montoya is Great. You will have work do on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday nights. But it is mostly easy and can be done in an hour or less. You write three major essays but you do them through the quarter. His feedback on the essay is great, he makes a video going over every individual person's essay and shows you what was wrong.
Prof Montoya gives great feedback on papers. I had a few zoom meetings with him for one of my major papers. Went throughly went through my paper multiple times and gave me great feedback each time! He offers extra credit but you have to work hard for it. Staying up to date with modules is important! Best English prof, Ive ever had!
Professor Montoya is a good professor. Also, I found the class to be very easy. However, the grading was harsh. Interestingly, he wants a student's writing to be very simple even boring. Each time I had anything he considered "extra," he took off points. Don't attempt to make your writing sound smart or be interesting to read.
One of the best teacher I have ever had. He gives a reasonable amount of work and is clear on what he wants. He also has a very lenient late policy which is very nice. I would recommend taking him over any other English professors at cbc.
Professor Montoya is an awesome English teacher. He helped me harness my true writing potential. He cares about his students deeply and genuinely wants to see them succeed. He has a good sense of humor and is truly passionate about his job. I recommend this class to everyone who wants a calm and interesting Creative Writing class.
I thought Mr. Montoya was a decent teacher. I would have preferred getting a marked-up paper back then a video with feedback, only because he doesn't go over everything, he thought was wrong. He is a very hard grader but does care for his students. There are opportunities for some extra credit I would suggest doing it every time it's available.
I took Mr. Montoya because of the good reviews but he wasn't the best. He grades the essays extremely hard and wants them to be very simple without much of your own thought or analysis. He had us do peer reviewing so the feedback you are getting for the essays before submitting them is not very constructive or helpful. He's a very nice person tho.
Mr.Montoya was a great prof but there was a lot of work to do. He gave great feedback but graded hard. Overall I would recommend if you are just needing to take this class.
Montoya was a great teacher! I learned a lot and was pretty stretched as far as writing papers. He is attendance mandatory. There were only 4 papers, but those grades pretty much influenced your grade. There were also a couple of easy assignments a week. He will give feedback in class if you ask, but he won't give you written feedback.
I really liked the structure of this class & you can tell his goal is to set his students up for success. He provides amazing feedback and lets you revise your essays and turn them in again for a better grade. He is a great professor and is easy to come to if you have any questions. I wish I would have taken him for English 101 as well!
Very kind and easy to get along with. Any concerns or questions, he would respond promptly. Quizzes are unlimited attempts and not timed. Small extra credit opportunity. Also, I could request my paper(s) be reviewed before the submission deadline for feedback to ensure better grades. The papers were broken down into sections - really helpful.
Professional, easy to understand
One of the bet english teachers I've ever had. About 3 papers through the whole quarter spending around 2 weeks writing and after you get your initial grade you spend around a week editing the paper to get a higher grade.
Absolutely great professor! They are very caring and will help you with whatever you need. Would take again.
Mr. Montoya is a good teacher, there are 5 major papers due throughout the quarter. You MUST pass a timed exam, the midterm or the final, if you pass one you do not need to take the second one. There is homework due every Tuesday Thursday and Saturday (online). Overall a good course, good teacher, but he does give a little more homework than others
Class is fairly easy. A few big assignments as expected, but multiple opportunities to read and review with peers. Very involved teacher. You know that he really cares about your learning. Gives good detailed feedback. Wants you to succeed.
I took Montoya for both English 101 (online) and English 102 (in-person). I could honestly not recommend him more. He wants you to be successful, and gives you the tools to do so. He is accessible and responds fast. You do have to put in the work to get a good grade for your essays, but he does this so you get better. Can be a tough grader.
Montoya was a very good professor. His engl 101 class is a little difficult duE to his grading contract, however if you Put in a little extra work you can get an A. I really enjoyed the textbook and it made each writing assignment very clear. He is caring and wants the best for you. There are chances for you to resubmit essays for 100%.
Montoya is an excellent teacher, but I would not take it again because my grade remained unchanged and I never received the tie to raise it due to this grading contact. Which is stressful and difficult to follow. I do not recommend taking his class; the work load is significantly reduced if you take it with someone else.
Professor Montoya's class was challenging but I feel like I learned useful skills in his classroom. We only have one timed exam and if you don't pass it he gives you another two chances. He is a tough grader but is clear with what he would like done. There are multiple papers but with his instruction and advice it isn't that hard.
Professor Montoya wants students to succeed in English. His layout of the course as well as directions are very clear and helpful. While challenging, he really helps you learn and succeed if you try your best. Really appreciated that!
10/10. The grading contract that Professor Montoya had us sign took off the stress of grade percentages and helped you put in better effort into your assignments. There was no textbook and you got to write about topics you're interested in! As long as you show up to class and put in your best effort into your work and participation you'll do great.
Professor Montoya was very kind. and helped me grow as a student, he really cares about you doing good. I got B+ but if I put more work in I could've gotten an A and he told me that, it was just the end of school year and I got tired
Professor Montoya is great. He has helped me grow as a writer in several ways. He gives very thorough feedback, and his grading system takes so much stress off my shoulders. He's very understanding if you fall a little behind in class and is more than willing to work with you to get caught back up. 10/10, would recommend.
Please don't take Montoya. He is a very nice person but a horrible teacher. I ended up not going to his class and just did the assignments. I got a 93% overall. His in class time was used for peer review of independent work. There is no clear guidelines and feedback was often vague or didn't come before the next paper was due.
Professor Montoya goes above and beyond for his students. You can tell he genuinely cares about the impact he has on our lives and how his course will help us in the long run. I've appreciated how much he's helped me grow as a writer. His grading system is clear and he responds to emails in a timely manner. I highly recommend taking his course!
Extremely patient professor who clearly cares for his students and their success. At ENG102, he even has an alternative method of grading based on effort. We also got to choose topics that we were actually passionate about. I learned a lot from his class, and I enjoyed talking to my classmates during the group sessions.
I thought he was gonna be a good professor because his rating is good. He doesn't have a normal grading system and his class is super unorganized and just so hard to follow. In the middle of essays we changed back to editing an essay we finished 3 weeks ago. There no clear grading rubric and little to no instructions when I asked he didn't help.
I am a senior citizen. Mr. Montoiya was my English teacher. He has the patience of Job. He's so encouraging and kind. I struggled with the format of writing but he took the time, did all he could to guide me along.
Great professor. Probably the best in the English Department. Only 5 main papers, 2 timed, 3 projects. Gives great feedback. Does a non-traditional grading system (with class support). Would definitely take again.
Professor Montoya is honestly the best English professor I've had. he's helped me a lot when I've struggled and has helped me to grow as a writer. he gives really good feedback whenever papers are submitted. definitely recommend for anyone who hasn't taken him yet and is considering it.
Hard class good person kinda picky
This professor was okay. His module structure was very weird and confusing to me, at least. He's a very sweet person overall, but get ready for lots of papers and 2-3 timed essays, which were pretty annoying. If you have a busy schedule already and have to take lots of classes, I don't recommend. !
