He doesn't post anything online. There is no practice questions. Whole grade is based on 2 midterms and 1 final. Goes through notes quickly. Notes are not specific.
No midterm, only discussion question and 2 quizzes on movies and unit material. Last assignment is a 10-15 page essay on a sustainability topic. Lectures are boring, common sense. Posts online so don't really need to go to classes. No chance to redo assignment if you miss class, unless doctors note. Rather stuck up/full of himself. Not the worst.
Really enjoyed Dr. Nelson's lectures, however if you are someone who is not interested in course material don't take this course as you will find lectures very boring. Lecture slides are not very specific. Most notes have to be taken off of his spoken word, not from slides. Tests questions are fair and appropriate.
Did not find Nelson helpful nor respectful towards students. He doesn't make the effort to help and doesn't care enough to get on a personal level with students or help effectively. You are likely to teach yourself all the material. Would NOT recommend!!
Would not recommend..... I love cells and biology to do with it but Nelson unfortunately turned me off from the whole area
Cell bio? More like prepare to teach yourself EVERYTHING
Funny guy! He makes plenty of jokes about himself, and provides amusing examples to demonstrate a concept. For example, he showed a clip of A Bug's Life to show how ants rely on pheromones to guide them back to their home. Midterms and the final were all on lecture material; it's completely possible to not buy the textbook and pass.
Matt seemed to understand the 117 kids were art students who wanted as little to do with science as possible. He tried to make it clear cut and as interesting as possible by bringing his personal research into lectures. When I needed help because I misunderstood or missed a lecture, he was totally there for me. Midterm and final were easy! Loved it
Lecture slides are useless. They're basically just a list of terms that he'll then talk about so be prepared write down what he's saying. Barely any exam prep material was provided. But hey, you still have the useless textbook to refer to. Each chapter was horrendously long and he deviates from the textbook a lot anyways. Tests were fair though.
He seems like s decent guy. PowerPoint slides are just awful, you could probably do well by never going to a lecture. Tests are fair and 99% MC (one short written question on the final). If you know the textbook inside out (takes a lot of time to do), you will do well.
He's a really nice guy, you can tell that he tries. That said, his lectures were horrible. His lecture slide were useless and he went on huge tangents about random stuff. I'm sure that by memorising the book I could've gotten an A, but with all the other courses there was no time to do so. It was just a terrible class, and I'm glad it's over.
hardest class I've ever taken. If it was with a different professor, it would've been a piece of cake.
I adored this prof and I'm sad to not have his class anymore. He's funny, easy to understand, gives easy exams, and I felt confident going into all the exams. Didn't use the textbook much but other than that I can't find any fault in this class. He made bio engaging and interesting for art students and I loved his lectures and personal stories.
Good prof, but his lecture slides are useless. Tests were all multiple choice. I only did well in this class because I recorded and listened back to lectures. Him tests are based off of what is says out loud, not what his slides say.
Would not recommend him as a professor. He provides lecture slides but does not post any. All of his tests are focused just on what he says. Only way to do well is go to lectures and make note of everything he says. Does not believe in any second chances. Can be relatively funny and is clearly passionate about the subject but not a very good prof.
This has to be one of the rudest and worst professors I have ever taken. Horrible lecturer, really disorganized, not accessible outside of class time, doesn't give powerpoints in advance, questions on exams are random and open to interpretation. Not a fair grader and truly boring. Would not recommend.
Not very good, I took this class in the summer as a visiting student and it was still very hard. He does not post notes so be prepared to write a lot. He puts written questions on the exams that are worth a lot (one midterm was 30% written) and he marks them VERY HARD. You must put extremely specific words to get it right. 10/10 WOULD NOT RECOMMEND
Took this course in the summer and it was extremely difficult with a lot of written that was about things that he briefly talked about in class and wasn't important but yet he demanded very specific responses. It is based purely on what he talks about (notes are too brief and are not provided). Made me HATE biology and was not helpful out of class.
Took this as a summer course and a visiting student. He is a very nice Professor. Tests are tough but as long as you put in the effort you will be okay. Hard marker for written questions.
Doesn't make time to help students outside of class, unclear expectations of testable material, vague, hard to follow lectures. Tested once on material not covered in class or found in the textbook. Rude in emails to students.
Prof. Nelson was the best teacher I've ever had in my life. He made the course material genuinely fascinating through his constant humor, and supplied relevant, interesting anecdotes to aid in students' understanding. Lectures were easy to consume and captivating. Exams weren't too hard if you took notes and studied. I truly adored this class!
Nelson is a good prof. Nothing too amazing, he will teach the material, you attend if you want or not. This class is really based on the 10 page essay you have to write. His Quizzes are hard and should not be underestimated, if he posts a link or video online you are expected to look at it as it does appear on the test.
He is extremely unorganized and can't seem to make up his mind about what content you are required to know. He doesn't provide notes, but expects you remember everything he says. He is condescending in person and isn't easily accessible. The exams are easier than expected based on the review and course content.
I had Nelson for cell bio 200 and invert bio 205. For 205 i really liked him! For both classes he had slide shows and normally does not post them (did a bit for 200). In 205, he was really passionate about this subject. There is a lot of note taking, but he makes it fun because of his passion. Cell bio... bad prof. Went waay too fast in lecture.
matt is obviously passionate about the material and really interesting in lecture - that's about the only nice thing i have to say. he takes forever to mark multiple choice scantron sheets (i'm talking weeks), and will tell you stuff that's on the tests when in actuality he goes on tangents about stuff not on the review. go to class for notes!
He is nice but not always an easy prof to have. You MUST go to class to get notes as he tests on what he says with the slides (which aren't posted) as a guide. His tests are partially very specific and partially common knowledge. The written can be tricky so know the terminology of major concepts thoroughly!
WORST PROFFESSOR. BASICALLY TRANSCRIBE THE ENTIRE LECTURE. WILL NEED TO GO TO CLASS TO NOTE EVERY POWERPOINT BUT HAVE TO KNOW IN DETAIL WHAT HE SAYS... HE EVEN WHISPERS AND EXPECTS YOU TO KNOW THAT TOO. HE SAYS A NON SPECIFIC FINAL BUT IT IS PURELY SPECIFIC
Nelson is a fantastic, passionate, and helpful teacher. He knows what he is talking about and has interesting lectures (if you're interested in what he is talking about). He is super understanding and wants students to succeed, if you try. Only issue is he is sort of unclear with what will be on exams and doesn't use the textbook.
Just one example, he posted a midterm review sheet, with no extra clarification. and I tried to follow it. but it turns our there are a whole unnecessary chapter on the review sheet. and another chapter which takes up 1/4 of the review sheet but only asked 2 out of 76 question on the actual test. very helpful.
As someone who had D'Souza first semester, Nelson was a bit of a shock to the system. Don't bother with his powerpoint notes, just write down everything he says in class. The first midterm average was 56%, if that says anything to difficulty. It helps that the content in BIOL125 is mostly covered in Bio 11 & 12, which definitely helped me.
The laziest professor that I haven't seen in my life also does not respect to students.
I used to like bio before I got to Nelson's class. He is an okay lecturer but his tests are incredibly specific and frankly unfair. You must attend his lectures because he only tests on what he says in class - don't bother with the textbook. Crap prof. Don't take if you care about your mark.
He is basically a guy who works for the salary instead of the students. He doesn't even know the materials as he needs to know and a vague marking scheme. Don't waste your money to his class which he does not care about your grades at all even though you worked very hard on the tests and assignments.
A very stressful and useless course and it is mandatory if you want to take environmental science major, he will make you hates biology and also the average in the class is pretty low as he does not even know how to teach.
I liked having Matt as a prof, however, his lectures were pretty jam packed. It's best that you don't skip because he does give important info in lecture and doesn't post his slides. Found the midterms review sheets helpful for guidance for studying, and as opposed to lots of these reviews, a lot of the content is in the textbook.
Way too much focus on things he said in lectures that don't even relate to what is being taught from the book. Off-shoots from the main topic are often thrown on there for questions of exams. Beware of the exams, they are long and quite challenging. They are usually all multiple choice, but with 5 choices. Not too bad of a person, but needs work.
Avoid him if you can , who is a legend contributed to the low class average. Final and midtern review sheet is useless.
He mostly talk about his life in Texas. Doesn't care about his students. Exams are ridiculous- they're very difficult and specific. Doesn't post his slides and won't go back and explain if you miss anything. His lectures don't follow the textbook and sometimes contradicts. As well, he says he won't move the mastering back.. but he will
Awful. All he did was read off his lecture slides. His test were rather easy because they were just discussion questions, so if you go to class you will do well on tests. However, going to class is a real struggle to get through.
Half the stuff on the final or midterms he hasn't even gone over or tells us its not going to be on the test but it is. His tests are so crazy specific.
Student beware, this is an awful prof. 95% of test material is based on what he says in class. The problem with this is he talks really fast. He also asks really specific questions and on concepts barely covered. Tests are thankfully multiple choice with 5 options. However, it takes him too long to grade tests even tho they're scantrons.
If you go to class and you write down what he says then you'll receive a good grade. He is very passionate about what he teaches but the exams are tough. JUST GO TO CLASS.
Content is easy but the quizzes are pretty hard if you don't attend the lecture. Not recommend as electives as it might drop your grades if you did not do well on your quizzes. Annoying online quizzes and a paper basically just marked by Turnitin, not himself.
I like matt. I found the course content interesting and enjoyed lectures a lot. His lecture slides are very minimal so go to class to take notes on what he says. He will also test on things that he tells you to watch or listen to. I enjoyed this class a lot more than bio125. would recommend taking notes on a comp. He is passionate about the subject
Best prof ever and very funny!
Nature boy is an alright teacher, but I would't take him again if I had the choice. He doesn't post the lecture notes until a couple of days before the midterm. His class consists of: 2 midterms, a final, and 30% lab. His tests are multiple choice with a couple of short answer. He takes about 3 weeks to mark his exams. The lab (I had Bill) was g8!
Very disorganized, his major points are barely explained on the textbook while you must read your textbook to do the mastering biology, this increases the course load because basically reading book does not help much. you will only be tested based on what he said in classes rather than what's taught in the textbook. He talks fast and even whispers.
Hard class but he makes the material super interesting. Seems like the class is going to be really hard at the start but you will come to become really interested. Dont miss class, as there isnt much for slides online.
This teacher isn't terrible at all. If you go to class, take notes, and do your Mastering Bio work you will be fine. Slides: the images were relevant and they had the main points you needed to know. He is clearly passionate about this subject and in reality it can be dry, he does what he can to make it entertaining and clearly cares about students.
Matt was a really good professor! His tests reflect exactly what was covered in lecture. Mastering biology and the textbook are not relevant to what was tested. As long as you show up and write down notes it's an easy course.
I have no idea why Matt has such a bad rating, he is probably one of the smartest professors I have had so far. When he lectures, it is evident he has a vast knowledge of what he is talking about. His tests are entirely based on the lectures, so don't even read the textbook. He also gives study sheets for the tests which is really helpful.
He genuinely cares about his students, whether he shows it or not. He also tries to make his lecture better every day with his sometimes irrelevant stories and jokes. If you attend all of his class and pay attention/take notes, you'll do great since his exams are reasonably based on his lectures. DONT STUDY FROM THE TEXTBOOK.
Actually made lectures interesting and made me wanna go to class to go to class. There is a lot of material to know but if you pay attention in class you can do well. Very passionate about spiders and texas.
Tests are based on what he says so you actually have to go to class. The thing is, he says slightly different things to each of his sections so it may be confusing when you are reviewing. He doesn't follow the textbook so pre-reading will be no help. Do well on your midterms and lab bc his final isn't worth a lot so it won't boost your mark much.
Matthew is a great prof! People often complain that since the course is so lecture heavy if you skip class you're screwed but like if you know that... don't skip class??? He gives a study guide which is perfect and hits every point on it in his lecture. Write down what he says about the slides he shows, NOT the slides. USE THE STUDY GUIDE FOLKS!
Really cool prof who is passionate about what he teaches. Everything he says in class is on the exams. To do well, write notes on what he says and not so much the slides since they are short/dry. The study guide he gives is really helpful for studying for exams and all his exams including the final were multiple choice. Textbook wasn't used.
One of my favourite profs ive had! He knows so much about so much and this helps because hes very passionate about what hes talking about and will incorporate some stories so its not just an hour and half dry biology lecture. Write down everything he says and compare with a friend if u missed anything!! Midterm review sheets should be your bible!
You don't need the textbook because he tells you everything you need to know in class. Unfortunately, he tests heavily on what he talks about in class rather than what is online and in the textbook, so you really do need to go to class if you want to pass. Do his midterm review and you'll easily pass his stupidly long, multiple choice midterms
Such a good class! The professor makes it super interesting. Take this class if you want to boost your GPA! If I needed to, I could miss class and it wasnt an issue!
Really opened my eyes to issues in sustainability. Classes were so much fun and his entertaining stories made them worthwhile. Really good GPA boosters as long as you don't plagiarize your paper. Also no final exam!!
Great prof that is passionate about what he teaches. Knows his stuff and keeps lectures entertaining and interesting. Taking sustainability with him was easy and the exams were also easy.
He talks and talks and talks... about what you ask? Beats me. He doesnt follow his syllabus, his assignments dont relate to the lectures and his notes are confusing to follow. Hes not clear on what he looks for on tests and what material is important vs what is just a fun fact or his opinion...
He does not give a lot if information on the actual topics at all. He will jump from one chapter to the other without any signal. You will not know what to study for midterms, his review sheets is a whole bunch of stuff that was never talked about in class.
Dr. Nelson is a very easy grader as long as you show up to class and do the readings! His notes are definitely scattered but his talks are interesting
Unfortunately I learned more about Texas than I did biology. Review sheets for the midterms did not include most of the topics he was testing on. His slideshows are impossible to study off of and he jumps around stories too much to take notes during class time. There was material on the exams that was not covered in class. Overall, awful class!
Is a good guy with interesting lectures, but is hard to follow. This makes it difficult to take notes in class, and he unfortunately only posts brief notes online which are useless
He is one of the most interesting professors I have ever had. If you do bad in your class its practically your own fault because he says all of the answers to all of the questions on his test in class, so take fast notes kid.
He can be kind of rude but overall this is an easy class. His slides are useless so attendance is mandatory and he goes over material extremely fast. He talks a lot about Texas and spiders so it makes it hard to follow sometimes. But over all he gives you all of the information that you need to know for exams.
Dr. Nelson is one of the funniest and most interesting profs out there. His lectures are super interesting and always enjoyable, unfortunately he goes through material very fast. You either have to be very fast at note taking or else record his lectures since the slides that he posts have almost no information on them.
Only tests on what he says, nothing else. My mark with him was 20-30% lower than with other profs for bio. Frequently rambles about his personal life and stories rather than using that paid lecture time to actually teach the subject. Not a fan.
Terrible, disjointed class. Homework is reading two chapters a week, every week. Surprise: much of what's in the book is not tested or talked about in class. Lectures are just as disjointed, almost ramblings; you're never sure what you're supposed to be writing down. Not enough? Here's three documents never talked of on class that you must memorize
Matthew is a very inconsistent marker, and conveys material in a very slopping, boring manner. He is unclear on certain criteria for papers, test, etc. Nice guy (I guess), but not my fav teacher
Learnt half way through the semester the best way to deal with his 8am is to record the lectures and listen on double speed later to take notes. His slides are bare minimum of an outline for notes. His tests are his words from lecture. Do good in the lab its worth more than the final. Final wasn't worth much but easy and followed the study guide.
Dr. Nelson's lectures are easy to learn from but it's important that you really try to listen. His tests stick to his review guides almost perfectly so study off of that! There's lots of course material so it's vital that you study well in advance for his tests and when he tells you to memorize taxonomy (big part of tests), TRUST ME, JUST DO IT.
His lectures can be boring at times & his slides arent that helpful as they are like skeleton notes. He talks a lot & you need to write down everything he says because he only tests on content he talks about. That being said, he posts midterm and final exam reviews which are EXTREMELY helpful and if you study off of those you will get a good mark.
don't bother getting the textbook he has review sheets for midterms/finals that are long but are worth it. he uses pretty much the same ones over and over again so you can usually find them on the internet or from someone who's taken his class before and get a head start on answering the questions during the summer if you're that type of person
All the lectures consist of him talking non-stop including him going on tangents. Recording the lecture is crucial as he tests only what he says. Class is broken up into 2 midterms worth 30% each and a final worth 40%. He posts long review questions a week before the midterm that take so long to complete but that's all you'll need to study off of.
He doesn't like cell bio and it really shows. He talks so fast that its hard to take notes and what makes it worse is that his slides are next to useless and he tests on what he says. He rambles and goes on tangents. However, the long study guides he posts are very helpful so do them. Exams are somewhat confusing, multiple choice and short answer
Invertebrate zoology with him is basically terminology memorization on crack. His expectations seem a bit excessive (memorizing several phyla, orders, classes, subclasses..., etc). Although attendance is not mandatory, I would encourage it. Like everyone is saying, his notes are only skeleton notes, and he tests on what he says.
Nice guy but oh man what a rambler. He cannot stay on topic. Most of his classes I was on my phone until an interesting discussion came up. He also didn't talk much at all about sustainability, instead most of it was biology I learned in middle school. By mid-October we were only on chapter 4, so that shows you how much he gets distracted. Easy A
MUST GO TO LECTURES. write down everything he says because he will test you on the most specific details that he will mention briefly in class. Posts his slides, but they have very minimal information on them so they wont help you that much. He has study guides on his website that are helpful
I have had him for a few bio classes now. You have to go to class and record his lectures to do well, but if you do that its easy to get a good grade. Tests are easy and his lectures are always engaging!
Yes his lectures have a lot of material and yes you must attend lecture to get the most of his notes but guess what?? that's university for you pal. Study guides reflect what will be on the exams so use them. He is excellent at explaining concepts and processes in detail without it being overwhelming. if you put in the effort you will do well.
He is a good professor. No, a lot of us including me did not get a good mark but that was because of the content. He is a good lecturer. If you take good notes and follow his syllabus, you will pass the class with a good grade. He is a hard test-maker though....
Nelson aka natureboy is honestly a good prof and a rad dude who just wants to hang out with spiders. He's funny and very compassionate and understanding. I can see why people don't like him as a prof tho, he is super lecture heavy and his slides are really just to remind him what points to talk about. Definitely a class you should record.
I honestly loved Dr. Nelson... he knows what he's talking about and definitely enjoys talking about it, however it is a butt load of information. Recording his lectures helps even though it takes hours to go through them, but it allows you to kinda relax during class and listen back on classes before exams (I did this when commuting before exams).
Dr. Nelson is definitely very knowledgable and wants us to succeed. However, the way he organizes his lecture and the way he delivers content was so brutal. He just rambles for the whole lecture in a barely organized way, and you never really know when he's talking about relevant things or just giving fun facts. Takes lots of extra work to do well.
I would strongly recommend to AUDIO RECORD his lectures and make Quizlet's for each chapter. He posts his slides so DO NOT waste your time writing them down word for word. He tests off of what he says, so go to class! He is funny and sometimes may ramble so if you lose your attention, go back to your recordings. Not hard if you study right!
You can do well if you go to class - record lectures because he tests on some certain things that he says in class one time. But overall easy to do well if you read textbook + listen in class + go off his REALLY GREAT test review packets. You have to go to class because the slides online do not have any info besides bullet point notes.
He's very considerate about students and his office hours are useful. You must show up and write what he says. His lecture slides are minimal so it's important that you stay awake and note what he is talking about. I also enjoyed his stories from Texas.
You can't miss class, even though attendance isn't "required." The slides made have little to no information on them, and you have to listen the entire time. Too many specifics used, and you don't know which ones are most important for the test. Study guide helps, but this class is tough for people that can't focus for an hour and a half straight.
One of the best profs! Explains concepts clearly and tests are very fair. You can do well as long as you go to class
He's a good and dedicated prof its just that you can't skip lectures because his slides don't go over the content he goes through in class. I would recommend taking notes from what he says and voice record that's what saved me by the end of the semester. Also use his study guides, they're great for exams.
He is pretty funny and personable in lecture. However, he goes through SO MUCH CONTENT and SO QUICKLY. To write down all his info, I had to record lectures and re-listen to them later, which would take about 4 hours/1.5 hour lecture!!! Such a fast talker.
One of my favourite professors. He is the perfect example of that REAL university professor who does not just paraphrase the textbook when teaching. He's passionate. Textbook is just complementary to lecture content. His exams focus mostly on LECTURE material, so if you attend lectures, take good notes and study them well, you'll pass for sure!
Boring class. Corresponding with Matt was very unprofessional and difficult, even though his responses were timely, it was like emailing a 10 year old.
online lectures are async. Nothing sync. Power points are empty so you gotta go based off what he says. 2 chapters a week while most profs only do one. Said one chapter would be on the exam, CH 36, didn't see anything about it, which sucked because i studied hard for that one especially. Oh yea grades completely based on 3 tests. no quizzes. ugh.
Different learning style for sure. Don't take this class if you don't like watching pre-recorded lectures; because that is all it is. Also, no applications from the information, just memorization. All tests and no helpful quizzes or projects.
He is super kind and is truly very passionate about bio! His tests however are fairly difficult. You just need to make sure you memorize your review sheet. He always encourages us to go to SL session, his office hours and use pearson to our advantage. Don't take this class if you aren't ready to give it your all :)
Awful tests, very rude and he tests are all based on what he says but not what he writes down.
Lectures are really heavy and he expects you to memorize so much info for the tests (which are the only things you are graded on). Test questions are tricky and are based off of small details, such as a name of a specific organ/body part, rather than having the questions show you understand the big concepts of the course.
Your entire mark is based off of 3 tests. The tests do not test your ability to analyze the material learned in lectures. Instead Dr. Nelson just asks extremely specific facts, answers that can easily be found by doing a Google search. Overall his attitude towards the class is quite poor and I would recommend you avoid him at all costs.
Nelson is a good lecturer. His anecdotes are interesting, but make it so that there is just a tonne of material to learn. As an online course, it wasn't too bad since you had the recorded lectures to go back to. Worked really hard for my A-; the tests aren't really 'hard' given his review sheets, but it's a lot of material to memorize
Im torn on my report of this guy. Hes really cool, I genuinely feel like id enjoy his lectures if the material was more interesting. Having long boring lectures made it really difficult to pay attention. I found this course to be really difficult, the tests sucked. I dislike how he runs the course, but he himself seems like a cool guy.
Seems like a cool guy but his class format was awful for me. Notes are hard to take because his slides are useless and his tests are very difficult. The content was interesting to me but I barely scraped by. Probably will try to avoid him at all costs.
Definitely teaches a lot of material in lecture and his slides have no information on them so you really have to go to class. The online format was really nice because you could go back and rewatch. Tests are heavy on memorization (anything, literally anything he says can be on a test) but I enjoyed his stories about spiders and learned a lot.
Matthew is a decent prof but he requires such a detailed knowledge for tests that it borders on impossible. the tests are multiple choice but if you dont remember a specific fact about horseshoe crabs or know how to spell collenchyma then youre screwed. however, i found i had a much deeper knowledge of everything because i had to memorize it.
(I took this course during the pandemic) Lectures were informative and easy to listen to. I found the exams quite difficult and felt unsure about the learning objectives + their relationship to the exam content. He is knowledgeable in the course content and able to provide assistance if you ask but some exam questions came out of left field.
I get such a kick out of this guy. I have had a couple classes with him thus far and plan on taking another. Nelson provides very detailed lectures and tests are very fair, no surprises. He is very passionate about what he teaches and is fun to talk to during office hours.
Class was very enjoyable! Nelson is hilarious imo and explains things well in class. If you don't listen to what he's saying, you'll miss important info though; his slides tend to lack definitions. I didn't find this to be an issue, just something to be aware of. I thought tests were fair, he tested on stuff we learned. Not much homework.
Matt Nelson is the best professor! His lectures are amazing and and he is really funny. He is very helpful outside of class, and I loved chatting with him about paper topics. I am very sad I will never have him again and if I could take him for another upper level ecology course, I would in a heartbeat!
The content of his classes are very heavy but as long as you study everything off his review sheet, you are bound to succeed. It requires a lot of effort and time but that is expected of a bio class lol. Everything I learn in his classes, I am able to retain which I cannot say about other profs. Great teacher :)
He seems to know what he is talking about which is lovely of a prof. Tests are HARD, tons of memorization. Study for them weeks before to memorize everything and you'll be fine. He's a good guy and cracks jokes a lot but basically anything he says is game to be on the midterms. Hard to miss a class.
Pay attention and take good notes and you will do well. The questions on the reviews before midterms will save your grade. The lectures are interesting! Anything said in lecture is testable usually.
I love this man. Super interesting lectures, loves the topic, easy exams. He's an amazing prof
very. enthusiastic professor who's very knowledgeable in the subjects he teaches. genuinely enjoyed being in his class, the test are very easy, mostly multiple choice with one or two short answer. all of the things that he mentions in class will be testable so beware, but over a good class and an amazing prof.
Nature boy is by far the best biology professor I have ever had. His exams are mostly all multiple choice with quite literally a few (2) short answer and everything in the study guide questions were on the test. Such a nice guy and clearly loves what he's doing but beware that the majority of what he says is testable so pay attention in class
Matthew Nelson, as a person, is very kind and funny. I can tell he truly loves biology and teaching; however, as a prof I find him quite old school. He tests on EVERYTHING he talks about in lectures, meaning that instead of focusing on the learning, I spend most my time groaning from the amount of memorization I have to do to score high on tests.
Nelson's invertebrate class is a huge improvement from first year. I didn't like 125 and was reluctant to take 205 with him. However, he quickly became one of my fav profs. He is very passionate about the content and I retain so much from his lectures. Yes, it's content heavy but it's a bio course, it's expected. I rlly suggest taking this class !
He is the worst teacher Ive ever had in my life. Two midterms and One final. No homework or quizzes meaning its impossible to know what he want you to know. His tests are rigged as well. 100 something hyperspecific facts about animals you have never heard of and even if you memorize it the question asked on the test will be different
Great guy, funny, knows what he's talking about. Teaching wise, poor. Includes slides that are useless because they have no information on them, its one word. He does not give out any comprehensive material on what we should know, its just "everything we talked about". This is pathetic because it is impossible to mentally store every word he says.
You get 2 midterms and a final to show your work, nothing else. Dr. Nelson also spends a lot of time during lectures telling stories about his life that although relevant to what we are talking about, usually take up more time then needed and we were left not finishing the material by the end of the year.
Nelson CLEARLY loves the content he's teaching and it makes it easy to pay attention when he's so enthusiastic. Content heavy class, but Nelson does a good job of making things interesting and easy to remember. Take good notes and go over the review questions before the exams and you'll do fine!
Funny but not an approachable prof at all. Write down word for word what he says out loud during lecture and study that because his slides are empty. If you do this you can get an A but it's a lot of work, memorization and there's a ton of information he goes into that you need to make note of. Wouldn't recommend his class but I learned a lot.
You will find yourself writing an insane amount of notes because anything he says is fair game for a test. He gives no practice tests or assignments making it challenging to succeed on his tests. The class average was shockingly low and he had to drop our lowest midterm grade. Natureboy's a nice guy, but a terrible prof.
Funny prof and with entertaining lectures. 80% of his exams come from study guides he gives so do try answering them and 20% come from random things he says. Write down everything he says during lectures because his slides are useless. He records lectures which is really helpful at least.
Fascinating lectures, but you absolutely need to pay attention as very little is written down in his slides. Anything that shows up in lectures is fair game for tests. Tests are fair, and mainly multiple choice.
Avoid his classes at all costs!! he just babbles all class about nonsense stories. his lecturing is awful, only puts point form on the PowerPoint and is all over the place. Anything he says no matter how small or insignificant the fact maybe will 100% be on the midterm or final. 2 midterms and 1 final are the only graded things.
This class was absolutely awful. Lectures were so boring and slow that I watched the recordings at 1.5X or even 2X speed. Most of the lecture content was random personal tid-bits that were ON THE EXAM. To succeed in this class I went to SL + put everything that came out of his mouth on a flash card - studied those at least 2hrs per day allsemester
I don't understand why people dislike Dr. Nelson, I loved his class and will seek out his classes in the future. This course is very content heavy, so will challenge you. Dr Nelson truly knows what he's talking about with material and will take the time to explain it to you if you're struggling. He is very understanding of mental health challenges
No assignments or quizzes no clue what I should learn. Basically memorize everything he says in lectures like kangaroos cant move backwards. Lecture slides are useless. Write about 7 pages of notes packed single lined every class with 90% of it being random facts and no concept. Get ready to memorize traits about 300 different plants and animals
If he was a mechanic teacher his class would be. I used to own a honda. The radiator cools the car and now moving on there are 4 cylinders in a vw golf and furthermore differentials allow for wheels to spin at different speeds. And then the question on the test will be what car did I used to own.memorize every minor and unimportant fact he says
reading before might have been a better idea, but during lectures a lot of details are said. overall great class and midterms and the final wasn't hard. the lab is rough but the lecture is great.
I LOVE nature boy's teaching style. It keeps you engaged and his stories make concepts easy to remember. The research paper plummeted my grade because I'd never written one before and there wasn't too much explanation for how to write one. As long as you study his study guides you can easily get 80%+ on midterms. Final was not cumulative yay!
So disorganized, and focuses too much on tiny details. Has minimum writing on his slides so be ready to type every word he says during lectures.
Nelson is a funny prof, however in regards to teaching he is not the best. He expects you to know everything he says in lecture, and ANYTHING is testable. Course is only midterms and finals, there is no way of increasing your grade.
Our first midterm avg was 58% and all he did was post a link to find tutors. He lectures all class and gives horrible notes, even when there are new terms. He belittles the textbook saying the info is wrong and ignores questions half the time. Went to office hours and he dismissed my concerns. Graded only by 2 midterms, lab and final. Good luck :(
This is a hard class. Please, GO TO THE LECTURES. You need to pay attention to what he says more than what is just written on the powerpoint, because that is what you will be tested on. He is very passionate, and I grew to like his dry humour. He tells stories that made me remember certain details, which would save me during the exams. Study hard.
I have such mixed feelings about this class. I read so many ratings about how hard his exams were that I was so stressed. There is a lot of content to know for each exam but he is fair with what he puts on and there were no curve balls. I think maybe he changed how he writes his test because it was not nearly as hard as people made it seem.
The most important piece of advice I could give to someone who has not taken this class yet is GO TO THE LECTURES and write what he VERBALLY SAYS. The power points provided during lectures did not appear on any exams or midterms (but what he says will). Our class average was very low, and I suspect this is because very few would regularly show up.
Dr. Nelson is my favourite professor. He provides the information clearly, explicitly and structured. He talks fast so it can be tough to keep up but he records his lectures so you can rewatch them to catch up. He responds to emails fastand is happy to answer questions. His review sheets are exactly what is tested on. I highly recommend this course
Dr. Nelson is an incredible prof. My biggest piece of advice is to go to lectures. Not just because you should know the information he's talking about, but because he's funny and very approachable and wants you to learn. Gives out study guides and taxonomy sheets and if you know what's on those, you'll easily get a good grade. Definitely recommend.
I genuinely love Dr. Nelson's lecture style. You do have to listen closely for the material as slides cover almost nothing, but his exams are extremely fair. I feel like I had a better connection and understanding with the course material as I had to memorize it. His humour grew on me and I loved his little stories. Overall, I would take again!
Dr. Nelson speaks very fast, and his slides are useless. This makes his class very difficult to do well in. His tests are complex to prepare for, and no amount of studying will suffice. Your grade is also based entirely on tests.
Dr Nelson is quite funny, and he's obviously passionate about the content. To be honest, the content is quite heavy, and requires like 8+ hours per week(my personal experience), its interesting though. I know this is bad advice, but forget about lectures, watch lecture videos at your own pace, take lots of notes and you'll be fine. :)
Prof Nelson is very passionate (esp. about spiders), but his lecture slides were very useless, so get ready to take lots of detailed notes. Exam questions were super niche, and the class was only graded by 2 midterms and the final. He records all of his lectures but tries to attend the classes because watching then at home feels so much longer.
BIOL125 demands a lot of memorization. The textbook isn't useful after week 1 or for tests/exams. Memorize lecture slides and write down everything he says during lectures with the corresponding slides. Tests are multiple-choice, focusing on definitions. The final is straightforward, covering post-Midterm 2 material with a bit of cumulative content.
ahhh Nature Boy, by far one of my favorite professors. Nelson is very engaging and a very entertaining professor. I'm in my last year and I have taken many courses solely with the reason that he is the professor. My biggest tip would be to write everything he says down, this is how I've studied for his classes and how Ive done well.
Prof Nelson is engaging, but his class requires a lot of work. Forget the slides - focus on his lectures and take detailed notes. Using Unstuck AI along with the textbook really helped me ace this class.
The only way to get marks in this class is by the 2 midterms and the final. His lectures are very boring and often talks about meaningless things. Beware that you get down everything he says otherwise you'll miss important details for the exams. Not very fun based on my experience.
Great professor whose always willing to help out even sometimes outside of office hours to help students to understand concepts that they may be confused with.
Dr. Nelson is by far my favourite prof of all time. His lectures are hilarious and he is clearly so passionate about what he teaches. Taking BIOL 125 and 205 with him is definitely making me want to take future classes with him. If you listen to him during lecture and study what he says, you will succeed. Would 100% recommend this class!
I loved Dr Nelson! Had him for Bio 125 and 205 and really enjoyed his lectures in both. He only has two midterms and a final that make up your entire grade but the tests were pretty straightforward if you take good notes during lecture and study those the tests were only a few chapters at a time and all multiple choice. One of my favourite profs.
Matthew Nelson is a very thorough and passionate professor, and I loved Bio 125 with him. His teaching style is very active, although attendance isn't mandatory, you risk being severely behind if you dont attend. Classes are very interesting and informative, tests are covered fairly. It's a content-heavy course, and I recommend recording lectures.
You need to note every little thing he says in lectures--which feel pointless and hard to follow since the slides offer minimal information. His tests include irrelevant details and he multiple-choice options are ridiculous, sometimes using unserious choices like "Stop it, Nelson." (NOT HUMOROUS WHEN YOURE FIGHTING FOR YOUR LIFE!!)
