Probably the best professor I've had. Very good at incorporating discussion and group activities into lecture, and excellent at facilitating discussion and engaging students. Expectations on tests and for the class in general were clear, and he is a fair grader. Highly recommended.
Professor Norton is the best teacher I have ever had. He makes a topic that isn't extremely interesting relatable, exciting, and clear! I STRONGLY suggest taking a class from him! He is reasonable with what he expects, easy going, and extremely helpful!
Awesome professor - genuinely passionate and interested in what he's teaching.
Professor Norton is without a doubt my favourite professor I have had thus far. He is incredibly knowledgable and passionate about his field. This class was incredibly interesting and I learned a lot. Professor Norton flawlessly integrated the class with group discussion, readings, videos, and even NPR articles. Strongly, strongly recommended.
He is definitely one of my favorite professors here. I love the way he teaches the class. He is very nice and helpful. His lectures are far from boring and makes the readings easy to understand.
Amazing teacher, makes things super clear and has interesting lectures. Highly recommended
Amazing teacher!!! The class material is horribly boring, but he created activities so that we could get participation points and to help us understand. For a class I never wanted to take, in teaching abilities, he is one of the best teachers I have ever had.
Awesome teaching style - open note tests! The material is HARD, but he does a wonderful job of going through examples in class so you understand how to use the formulas. Attendance is not mandatory, but he doesn't post notes online and the notes are essential to do well on the test. Definitely one of the best Sociology professors I have had.
Professor Norton is great. Take any class you can from him if you are a Soc major and you want to actually learn the material. He is very approachable and has a relaxed teaching style. He never goes off on rants, which I love. He is super intelligent, yet humble--the best kind of professor.
The very best instructor in the Soc dept. Take any class you can. Try not to develop a crush. ;)
He's a fantastic teacher and encourages students to elaborate and engage in topics. He knows a lot about his class and is great at determining wether or not the class is understanding the lecture. Absolutely take this class! He does pop quizzes so attendance is recommended.
Great lectures, clearly very passionate, but also wants you to be interested in the material as well. Very approachable and helpful if you reach out to him. Would highly recommend this professor!!!
He really loves what he does! Took him for 310 and had no interest in Political Soc but wanted to take another class with him! He makes you work hard but hes really reasonable and willing to help as long as you show understanding and read! You should take his course he makes uninteresting things seem interesting
Best teacher I have had at the U of O!
Professor is a fantastic teacher. He is very fair, explains what he's teach and he's easy to talk to.
Great prof!
Norton is the best. 6 quizzes, drops 2 lowest. Two papers, midterm and a final. He makes boring topics interesting and is a very good speaker. Some said his class was hard. It wasn't. Show up, listen to the guy, and go through the readings and you'll do well! Best Soc prof here. I learned so much from him. Will take any and all classes with Norton
one of the best professors of my academic career and definitely in the sociology department. the way he teaches you things, the way he phrases the info just make total sense and studying for tests and quizzes wasn't necessary because the way he teaches you can't forget. hard to explain, but listen... take this professor
Prof. Norton may be the best Soc teacher at UO. Had him for Soc310 and now 380. Class consisted of 6 quizzes lowest 2 dropped, midterm, 2 essays (4-6pgs) and a final. All readings posted online, no textbook. His lectures are always interesting and he breaks up the time very well. I'd take any class with him. This class is an easy B, and possible A
This class is super easy and the professor is awesome. As long as you go to lectures (And by go to lecture I mean that I went to 70% of them), and take notes there, you're golden. The topics he introduces are super straightforward; however, if you are confused he gives great examples during lecture so there's no way you won't understand.
Super easy class, especially for an intro course. Have over 100% in the course and he drops your lowest score from a pool of 4 tests/1 paper (basically not taking my final). Class is easy and posts all lecture notes online.
Professor Norton was great! Loved the topics we discussed and his class helped me realize I want to minor in Soc. Dropped our lowest grade out of five assignments and discussions were really interesting.
Very interesting lectures and not a ton of reading.
I loved Professor Norton, he obviously cares about the material he teaches as well as his students. He is very approachable and flexible. In order to succeed in this class, you MUST read and pay attention during lecture. I liked that we were not required to purchase a textbook
one of the best professors ever. he's a humble genius that deserves to be recognized for empowering his students to excel. He is amazing
my favorite professor at this university. i took both 380 and 480 with Matt and i learned more than i could have ever imagined. 10/10 professor, 10/10 guy.
I had him for SOC 204, SOC 380, and SOC 465 and he is honestly one of the best professors I have ever had here at UO. He really cares about his students, and the readings he assigns are always very interesting. I also learned a lot in his class, and he always makes class concepts fun and engaging. Would take a class with him any day.
Professor Norton is a very caring person. He often rambles and moves quickly in class but he always posts the class slides and the in class exams are open note. It's an easy A if you just show up to class and listen. Would take again.
He care's a lot about his students and it's clearly shown through his teaching style he is always willing to go back to explain something. The essays are very simple despite being about 3-4 pages long. Midterm is also very simple thanks to the study guide he provides. I was able to study for entire midterm the night before without reading to get A+
Matthew is such a great teacher: he's funny, kind-hearted, and very sweet. Soc 204 is one of the easier Soc classes, and he made it so much easier to understand! All of his exams are either open-note or take-home. Easy class, fun teacher, cool lecture material; if you want an easy A, take this class with Mr. Norton!
Very chill class - interesting lectures, easy grading, and no homework at all. Just two take home tests and two in class tests - all of which you pretty much get to decide what you write about. Take this for an easy A that's also interesting!
Doesn't use slide shows or any visual media when he lectures. It is purely him lecturing at you, and you taking notes. There's a midterm and final, and 6 pop quizzes - but he drops the lowest 2 quiz scores. Two papers - very straightforward.
There are six random quizzes but only 4 are graded. There is 2 papers but as long as you pay attention in class, there is no reason why you wouldn't do well on them. The midterm was pretty easy as long as you did the study guide and paid attention. I wish there were more powerpoints as they are easier to study from them memory from lecture.
Professor Norton by far is definitely one of my favorite professors at UO. He has a great personality, is extremely intelligent, and sounds like Aristotle when he teaches. This class was awesome and really made me look at the world so much differently. 10/10 would recommend taking.
One of the best teachers I have had here. He talks a lot but it is engaging and kept my attention. I learned a lot in this class but felt like it wasn't too difficult. Definitely recommend. Seems respected and caring.
Fairly easy course, and straightforward lectures. I wish that he uses powerpoints more, his visual aids are fairly minimal, when he does use them. The midterm/final are short answer/longer answer, not multiple choice, but if you focus at all in class in regards to readings, you'll be okay. 6 quizzes, drop the two lowest scores.
This is a really interesting course and he teaches it very well. He gives every opportunity for the student to succeed. The Assignments are on the easier side and material is easy to understand. He gives sections to read but its just over what hes already talked about so if you do not understand just read.
Professor Norton is an amazing teacher. Sometimes his lectures can be boring but it's easy to get a good grade and he doesn't take attendance. The only things that go towards your grade are the papers/take home tests. Every once in a while he will hand out a worksheet to do in class but they're easy and he does it like every few classes.
Norton is a very good teacher. For the most part the class is very free, as students have a lot of say in what they want to write for the assessments. That being said, the assessments can be quite time consuming so it is good to start early. Also it is a plus if you get a good GE, since they grade all of your work.
Prof. Norton has, by far, been the best professor I've had. He makes this class so interesting AND open. Some of the subjects can be tricky topics to teach because your personal views can get in the way (controversial or sensitive topics) but Norton teaches in a neutral way. He is so easy to learn from and listen to during lectures.
Prof. Norton has been one of my favorite professors at UO. The class was super interesting. I was never bored and his lecturing style was great-he's super easy to listen to. He is extremely approachable, understanding, and respectful, and he genuinely cares about his students' concerns. He was willing to give extensions on papers/exams if needed.
By far one of the best professor's at UO and in the SOC department in general. He's very clear/educated on the material he's teaching and talks to you during lecture, not AT you, which is super helpful. If you do the readings, and ask for clarity during office hours, you are guaranteed to pass with an easy A. The only con is the group work.
Super easy and he actually cares about his students and is very flexible so his students succeed! Loved the class too
Norton was kind and respectful with engaging lectures. Only two mandatory discussions, with multiple options for how to take exams if one method did not work for a student. Great guy and great professor!
an amazing professor would definitely recommend. lecture heavy and there are little to any slides so you have to pay attention to what he says, but the information is very interesting and he really cares to make sure students understand and learn the material. very forgiving during COVID.
I had an amazing time in this class even with the stress of being online. Attendance wasnt technically mandatory but there are surprise pop quizzes so youll want to be there. Plus, his lectures are engaging and helpful so you dont want to miss it anyways! There were papers as well as exams which was a bit heavy but I really enjoyed the prompts.
This was my first class with Norton, and I gotta say he is by far the best teacher I have had at UO. He makes the lectures interesting and makes sure to present them in a way that everyones understands the material. He respects his students and is super lenient and understanding with the Covid circumstances. Great teacher, I highly recommend!
Super kind guy and wants his students to do well. He cares a lot about his work and you can tell, also very good at explaining and being understanding.
I wish Norton could teach every Soc class I take. His lectures are so engaging and each class is the perfect mix of lecture, videos/media, and discussion time. He really encourages you to come up with your own ideas about the theories and creates space for you to discuss with your peers. Super chill about deadlines, overall just a great professor!
I really enjoy the way he lectures, he has a way of explaining it well so it makes it more interesting. Really understanding and you can tell he wants you to do well, doesn't sweat the small stuff like strict deadlines. As long as you try, you're good!
Professor Norton is awesome! I recommend this class specifically if you've never taken a sociology class before. His lectures are engaging, and interesting. He is a funny and light-hearted professor, definitely take one of his classes if you get the chance!
Taken many classes with him, he's the best of the best. I missed weeks of class last term and he didn't pry about my circumstances, he just empathized helped me make a plan to get back on track (I passed with an A-). Go to class and do the readings, but if for some reason you fall behind, you can count on him to help you find a way to succeed.
Professor Norton is a very engaging professor and is incredibly knowledgeable.
Very caring individual, and genuinely funny. Each lecture is rich with useful content, and he summarizes concepts well. If Professor Norton is an option, you must take his course.
Professor Norton is undoubtedly the best professor I've had at UO. The content he provides for reading and lectures is interesting and engaging. He is kind and really cares about his students doing well. I know his classes fill up fast so if you see an opportunity to take one with him, I highly recommend it.
Matthew is a great professor who had engaging and thoughtful lessons. The course material was super interesting and had many different types of readings. Most of the grades in the class were 6 pop quizzes, 2 papers, 1 midterm, and the final. Overall, he was very lenient on deadlines and allowed extensions. I definitely would take his class again!
Probably the best prof I've had so far, the lectures were super engaging and interesting. The class was super easy, attendance isn't required but definitely needed to do good on the assignments.
Matty Nort is the GOAT! Seriously one of the most caring and understanding profs. There were 6 quizzes (lowest 2 were dropped), two papers, a midterm (which was open note), and a final (which was take-home). He doesn't use slides when he lectures, so you have to attend and pay attention, but he's super engaging and knows what he's talking about.
Norton was very fun and engaging. Different lecture style than I was used to but it ensures that you pay attention. 5 assessments throughout the term, but you have a lot of flexibility on what you do for them, & he drops the lowest one. Very clear communication and made lectures interactive with 8 "lecture activities". Would definitely take again!
Norton is a very a good professor. He covers the test material in his lectures around the main concepts of sociology, although these lectures are long, hes engaging with his audience and has "class activites". Hes very caring and always on top of things, I genuinely enjoyed taking this class.
Norton was a good teacher, he was very passionate about sociology. He cares for the students and is supportive in any way. If you go to the lectures and pay attention, you'll pass. But if you dont go, good luck- very lecture heavy. Only real problem was the GEs, they were sorta confusing and tough graders.
Amazing Professor and keeps the class engaged with actual interesting content. Best sociology prof I've had and would definitely recommend taking a class of his! There were 6 pop quizzes and all were easy if you did the readings, the lowest two were dropped. He doesn't use slides but is a very good lecturer, just take notes! I
Professor Norton was an amazing professor. He's very responsive via email. You had options of what to do for each exam (paper, open note exam, group project). Attendance wasn't mandatory but I HIGHLY recommend that you go. I believe it would've been hard to pass had I not gone to class. I will absolutely be taking a class that he teaches again.
Super easy class if you just go to class and pay attention. Lowest assessment of 5 is dropped. Range of options for assessment options- so super accommodating. Tests are entirely based on lecture, didn't even need to read the textbook.
Professor Nortons class was a breath of fresh air. With that said, it wasn't easy but wasn't so hard or dense that you'd drown in work and questions. Go to lecture and review the slides and you'll do great, honestly.
This guy was great. Mad respect for his ability to stand up for an hour 20 and lecture the whole time with so much passion. I am not a sociology person, but I enjoyed his class. He has 1x week lecture activities you must be present for and his exam style caters to multiple types of students. I would 100% take a class from him again, nice guy.
I love this professor. His lectures are super enganging and the assignments for this class were super easy and straightforward. He's an easy grader and the material is interesting and enganging. I'm definetly registaring for another one of his classes.
The professor himself? Great. His lectures are very interesting and I would definitely take another class with him. The GEs? Nightmare. If you choose to take the test assessments they are HARSH graders. They make the concepts out to be way more complex than they actually are- make sure u basically memorize the lectures tbh
Best professor ive ever had at the UO! 2 papers, take home final, open note midterm (just no laptops), optional reading pop quizzes (you can opt out for a reading response instead). Just do the readings and group activities in class. He is so kind & understanding, emphasizes how he wants to make this easy for both us and him. HIGHLY recommend:)
Really great professor overall. You can tell he really cares about what he is teaching and the class is very interesting and fun. Im always excited to see what we are learning about. The course overall is an easy A if you put in just a little effort. Mandatory Discussions but they were fun. Always cracking jokes and just a really fun class.
Easy A for soc credits. Flexible, understanding prof - great & entertaining lectures.
Very engaging and clear lectures. The assignments are pretty simple and you are given a lot of choices in what and how you answer during the few Assessments.
Super duper nice, very engaging, and funny lectures. Definitely a professor to remember! Would 1000% retake this class. My discussion leader was amazing as well! I highly recommend to take this class!
Lectures are kinda boring but he is funny and makes it interesting. You get an option to write a paper or take a quiz and you get to see the questions a week in advance. Was pretty easy overall and somewhat interesting. I would take his class again! He also shows a bunch of videos in class which makes it less boring.
Mr. Norton is great...SOC204 is boring but easy. You're exams are 75% of your grade, but you can choose to do a test or a 1,200 word essay (essays are graded less harsh!). No attendance isn't mandatory but he does lecture activities which you usually had to in class but you can make them up. You also only have to go to 4/6 sections.
Matthew Norton truly cares about sociology and it shows through his teaching. Lectures were a tad boring, but attendance was not necessary and you could make up the in-class work. I do recommend going as the notes you take during class help with the three exams. I did the 3 short answers everytime and as long as you write a page you're good.

Super nice prof. Lectures could be boring at times, but you can tell he cares ab what he's teaching. 3 assessments and the questions are given ahead of time. You can either write a 1200-word paper or do a test with short answer questions. Would def take this prof again!
He really cares about what he teaches and makes sure the students succeed in his class. His class is relatively easy and it's very clear about how he wants assignments. Overall he's a great professor who enjoys doing what he does and the class has interesting material if you pay attention.
Best professor I have had at UO. Super nice and understanding, I would take another class from him if I could. Never could go wrong with him as your professor!
I loved this class and felt I took so much away from it. Every grade you get can be revised, including tests and papers. He is an amazing lecturer and truly sets the class up for your success and understanding. The papers you read are so inclusive and really interesting. The exams are open note and the lecture recordings are posted online.
Amazing professor!! Very understanding, accessible, and very easy to communicate with! I'm very lucky to have had Professor Norton twice now. I recommend him if you're looking for a Sociology class.
This is my second time taking a course with him and once again, Professor Norton taught with so much passion and I took away a lot from this class. He does do periodic reading quizzes, but you can always make these up at home. Every large assignment could be revised to 100. You do need to do an extra project to get an A+.
Matt is super passionate about his work and fun activities in class. 3 assessments which he gives the questions before hand, graded either 0%, 50%, or 100%, and you can make up if you get 50%. The rest is participation in discussions and lectures done randomly in class so go to every class.
My favorite professor I have ever had here, as a senior, im bummed I couldn't have met him sooner.
Prof. Norton makes the lectures entertaining and interesting, and he's an easy grader who wants his students to succeed. I highly recommend taking this class!
Vey engaging lectures and easy grading, with just points from participation and the discussions. Not much homework except reading. Definitely recommend!
Professor Norton is a great teacher and is very engaging in lecture. It is quite easy to get a good grade in the class if you attend lecture and do alright on the tests. Tests are shown in advance so that students can prepare, and revisions are given for up to full credit. This class is set up so that students succeed.
Professor Matt Norton is kind and genuinely cares about his students. However, the class lacks substantial content, making lectures feel unengaging and mostly filled with irrelevant video clips. No one around me seemed engaged, and the course felt like a waste of time and money. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this class.
Dr. Norton inspired me to declare a minor in sociology. He is incredibly passionate about his topic and makes his lectures very engaging. You will NOT regret going to class. No exams, just three very easy and clear written assessments. Even if you aren't familiar with Sociology, I highly recommend this class.
Professor Norton is very passionate about sociology and the lectures are quite engaging and interesting. I recommend this course every time my friends are registering for classes.
Professor Norton is genuinely passionate about sociology and you can tell by the way he lectures. The material is very engaging, and the grading system is set up for student success. Take this class if you can, your grade is entirely up to you and you'll find yourself actually wanting to go to class.
Such an easy class, attendance is mandatory but it's so chill and grading is so easy.
Pretty good prefessor, but the lectures are kinda unneccesary except for the lecture activities. There's only 3 exams and it's easy to get 100% on them with a bit of effort. Overall not bad.
Professor Norton is an amazing teacher, so I would highly recommend him. He's very kind, forgiving and understanding of students. Relatively easy class as long as you do the reading and show up to class. He is an easy grader, and you are even able to improve your grade if you don't do well. He's awesome!!
I would recommend this class to anyone! Very straightforward and light workload. It was very easy to apply previous knowledge/personal experiences to the class concepts, and the material was genuinely interesting. It is very easy to succeed in this class, so I would recommend taking it alongside more strenuous classes to balance your workload.
Norton is funny, uses lots of anecdotes and some viral videos/movie clips to explain concepts, and lets you know exactly what to do to get the grade you want. Also, he remembers your name if your introduce yourself, which is pretty rad. Attendance DEF needed to pass. Some pop quizzes, but every quiz, test, paper can be revised for full credit. slay
Wonderful class and easy to follow along. Presented interesting discussions and the essay prompts left room for creativity. This class made me add sociology as a major and was thoroughly enjoyable!
So understanding and caring of his students. Truly the nicest professor ever and very accommodating. I love that he allows his students to freely pick what they want to write about and I thoroughly enjoyed his class. Class has two essays, one in class midterm where questions are given as study guide before hand, and 5 easy quizzes.
I am really happy I choose to take this class with him. He clearly cares about his students and their success, he uses a unique grading system and allows corrections on assignment to work towards the grade you want. Really great professor!
