hard but good
Hes a friendly guy and tries his best to relate real life to his lectures but everything he covers doesn't really help with the tests you take. he does a more casual approach in the lectures when the tests are more straight from the books. And the projects are due online which i did not like. i got a B in the class and skipped 2 of the projects.
he was extremely unorganized, and really bad at communicating. the material itself is not so hard, but because he is slow at grading, does not post grades as needed, does not have his online course organized, and many other things, you have to be on top of him about what your grade is and your progress. you may end up failing b/c you were clueless.
He started out really stricked but eased up toward the end. Discussions were interesting and he is friendly but not flexible at all about deadlines.
Friendly and intimidating at first but once drop dates arrive and half of the class drops b/c they are failing due to not reading the textbook, he lightens up SO much and gives away like 200 bonus points just for showing up to the class. I passed with an A and didn't have to take the final exam b/c my grade was so high. Easy to pass just READ!
freakin awesome! but you have to read
He is a very easy teacher as long as you play by his syllabus. I would recommend all freshmen take this class their first semester because he can teach you how to approach college classes. He has an open note quiz almost every week and gives ridiculous amount of chances for extra credit. Not including the final exam I earned a 108% in the class.
He is the best professor I have had here! At first I thought his class was really hard but I met him and he spent like an hour showing me how to take better notes on the book! He cares about making you a better student.
It was a very difficult class mainly because I found the material uninteresting, However Dr Patton did a great job in relating a lot of the material to real life situations. He is extremely helpful and really wants to see his students succeed in the classroom. I like his casual approach during lectures it made the material interesting.
His lectures could be confusing, and if you asked him to explain something, that was worse. His exam questions are not clear, so it's difficult to tell what the question is. He'd poke fun or dismiss students genuine opinions in favor of his own. And hope you don't mind being called stupid, because he'll call you that at least once during the class.
You never get your tests back. Out of all the quizzes and exams I took, I think I only ever got one or two back. I rarely knew what my grade was, or if I did, I didn't know what it meant because it wasn't explained. No wonder we all thought we were failing. If I asked for help, he would just explain badly then wave me away if I didn't understand.
He's nice and funny but he is big on teaching you how to read college books. I got sick halfway thru class and he was flexible.
HARDEST CLASS EVER! he really pushed us and i hated it at times but i learned more than any other class here
Good teacher. Easy quizzes and tests if you take good notes and read. He elimates bad test questions if most people get it wrong. Gives LOTS of opportunities for extra credit!!! DONT USE YOUR CELL PHONE IN CLASS
Down to earth and very nice. Twice he called me when I had questions about my homework.
Dr. Patton is an amazing instructor. Lectures were always interesting, and students were very engaged. I had some trouble on exams, and after meeting with dr. Patton he gave me some great study tips and I ACED every exam after. You do have to read the chapters to pass the tests, but he also gives a lot of chances for "easy" points with assignments
He is so funny and nice you forget how hard your working. Needed help but couldn't go to office hours, so he called me and we talked for like an hour.
Loved him! Exactly the kind of professor I needed for my first semester in college.
Dr. Patton is Awesome, and really cares.
Fair and cares about students.
Professor Patton is a great teacher overall to have for Psychology 111. Hes very confusing when it comes to lectures, and he expects you to do a lot of the reading at home by yourself. When I mean a lot I mean A LOT, but other than that as long as you show up everyday and at least try he will pass you. Just do your work, and show effort.
This class should be easy to pass. As long as you show up ON TIME, listen to his lectures, and turn in your assignments, then you will definitely pass. There is a lot of reading but if you ever find yourself confused this course offers supplement tutoring sessions for free. They help a LOT. I suggest you take them. Also, this teacher is hilarious.
This class requires a lot of reading but as long as you stay on top of it, you will be fine. He allows open notes for every quiz and gives out extra credit at the end. Attendance is graded so make sure you go everytime. He is very sarcastic and not the nicest person, especially when it comes to missing class.
Professor Patton is an amazing teacher! If you don't like sarcasm and dark humor, don't take him though. He is hilarious and explains the concepts we have to learn very clearly with awesome examples. I loved going to his class and participating. It was a great semester, and I aced his class. He is caring and gives a lot of extra credits. Take him!!
Get ready to read and write peeps. Quizzes are easy(some of them are just open notes). Credit for showing up in class and he gives a lot of extra credit. He teaches Psychology in an interesting manner. Topics and examples are also great.
I had Professor Patton for the fall 2015 semester, and I really liked him! He was funny and engaging, and he encouraged class participation and was very lenient when giving tests and assignments. He always asked for our feedback on stuff so he could make the class better for us. Would highly recommend!
Patton is hilarious and makes class fun. His tests are hard as hell but if you read the material and take notes, you can easily get a B on them. He is strict about certain things but nothing crazy. He is great to meet with outside of class as well. I worked hard but learned a lot in his class.
This teacher tends to give unrealistic times for assignment completion. For example, I recently took a quiz that needed probably 15-20 minutes that we were expected to do in 10. Also, he makes you fill out a whole entire form if you turn in an assignment literally minutes late. Also makes derogatory comments during lecture.
Matt is super funny, works hard to relate course material to everyday life and keeps the class engaged. Hes strict about no phones and attendance and packing up while hes talking. But you learn a lot but you also have to read a book to prepare for tests. The book is free online, he tells you that. He welcomes feedback to make the class beneficial
Prof. Patton is a unique teacher. You can tell he knows his stuff in the Psychology world, which is reassuring. His lectures are very informative and you'll definitely learn a lot if you pay attention/read. The test are tailored in a way to where you have to be 100% confident in your answer otherwise you'll be uncertain if you're right/wrong.
This class was a lot of fun to take. The professor makes the class very interesting and entertaining. He also shows a couple of videos in class that are very informative and fun.
lectures are so boring and he constantly says uh or um. besides that you rarely have homework and your only graded on tests and quizzes. all quizzes are OPEN NOTE. dont be on your phone hell make weird jokes about it. other than that hes a cool guy and his class was easy for me.
funniest prof ever
he is simply AWESOME! I was terrified of taking collage classes being foreign and new with all this but I got out with LOTS of confidence. I just finished a summer class with him, He makes it FUN and makes you WANT to attend and participate. I recommend it! he is funny and knowledgeable and VERY understanding. Please take his class!!!
Professor Patton's class is very lecture heavy, but he brings up very good points to talk about in class. All quizzes are open note, but you wont pass the class if you don't read the book. If you miss a class, you miss a ton of information. Overall, as long as you're doing the work you will be good.
Overall one of the greatest professors I have had. He doesn't drown you in projects, and quizzes are open book. He's a talker so if you miss class you'll need to get the notes. He doesn't rely solely on the book which is nice. He's also got this morbid, deadpan humor thing going on which is also great
Laid back guy as long as you do your work and show up on time
dR. Patton is funny and makes the boring stuff sound cool. The book is free but it SUCKS!
Most times did not seem attentive to course. Assignments were unlocked late and extra credit opportunities were given and taken down sporadically. Many quizzes are to be taken and exams make up most of your grade. Although the exams are based on textbook reading, especially the final, it would have been great to have an exam review.
Overall, I would say he's a pretty good professor. You definitely have to read the textbook to pass the class. He is pretty flexible when it comes to extensions, due dates, redos. He tries his best to be helpful, but sometimes lacks clear communication (in terms of feedback). That being said, he is always open to emailing, phone calls etc, to help.
Matthew Patton was one of the best Psych teachers I had. Pours a lot of effort into his lectures. Uses humor and stories to keep things interesting. I enjoyed my time in his class.
Had Patton for PSY111, he was pretty cool, he tries to help you out with assignment dates and stuff like that. He was NOT cool about cell phones or technology of any kind so beware. His class is all lecture and take notes! Lots of reading from the textbook too. It was hard if you didn't study your notes but not a lot of other assignments were given
Dr Patton is so funny and candid. He makes heavy lectures very enjoyable and knows what hes talking about. Textbook is free. Frequent readings. Review questions at random during classso come to class! Tests arent easy but if you take good notes and study, youll be fine. Really enjoyed this class!
Gives great lectures but you have to study in order to pass this class!
Best professor I've had! He cares a lot about seeing his students do well, even outside his classroom. He grades fast and the tests really aren't bad if you pay attention and put in the work. I found Psychology fascinating so I didn't mind long study hours. Wish I could give Dr. Patton higher than a 5/5.
Doctor Patton is the best teacher I had here so far.
My favorite professor by far. Although the whole class is lecture and powerpoint he is really good at keeping it funny and interesting. He gives lots of extra point options. Attendance is kinda mandatory kinda not. He does a thing where he has a random name caller and if youre called on that day and youre not there you get no points for the day.
Good teaching curriculum
I am surprised he doesn't have a higher rating on this website. He is by far my FAVORITE professor. He is very very understanding and can be lenient with grades in lots of situations. He is also very aware and understanding for people who are on programs for accommodations. He ALWAYS makes sure yo get what you need. On top of that, HE IS HILARIOUS.
Hands off teaching style, study guide for test that was not useful. Did not offer tips, guidance, or many learning tools. It was almost from the beginning in the syllabus when he warns everyone that the class is very difficult and everyone has to drop a class at least once in their college career.... gee thanks!
His quizzes are very hard and questions can be misleading. Patton is a tough tough grader and not one for leniency, even in a global pandemic
He shows that he cares about his students, and that matters alot!
fun and interesting class
This teacher does not prepare you for the tests you take. You study the material by yourself because his lectures never help. 10/10 would NOT recommend. Tough grader no matter the circumstances.
book is boring
got covid and fell behind but dr. patton was AMAZING! he zoomed with me to help me catch up and let me turn work late. he really cares and helps whenever you are stuck. Take this proffessor!
I have not met any Professor who really cares about the success of his/her students like Dr. Patton. Besides being really knowledgeable and makes his class a breeze for students, he actually cares and genuinely goes extra mile to makes sure his students succeed. I don't do reviews but I am glad I have this platform to express my experience.
Professor Patton really cares about about the success of his students. He gives excellent feedback when he grades your assignments on how you should improve you work and what you need to do. If you have any problems with assignments, he happily works out the problems with you. If you want a professor who will help you learn, Professor Patton is it.
Very helpful with feedback and goes out of his way to help you succeed. His grading criteria is very clear and he helps you correct your mistakes rather than just throwing a grade at you. Not the easiest class ever but he is very encouraging.
Dr. Patton's Summer 2021 PSY212 was formatted in a manageable way for students who have expectations outside of college.. ie; work, mental illness, and other unpredictable situations we find ourselves in as students amidst today's world. He is communicative, empathetic, and genuinely concerned for your success. I would take this course again 100%.
Fairly difficult but if you put in the work youll be able to pass. Only given 2 late passes on items. Template for module notes given (recommend using it since it will help for quizzes and discussions). Accessible through email, replies back fast. Gives extra credit and extensions when needed. Deadlines important! Read your text!
A good balance of lectures, and videos relating to topics in each module.
Dr. Patton was a good teacher. I took his online class so there wasnt any zoom. Their was 9 topic with lots of reading. Since it was eight weeks with no zoom there was a lot of reading, but the book he gave you was free. Each topic had a quiz (which u could take multiple time), 2-3 assignments each topic, a project, and a mid and final exam.
The book is eh but Dr. Patton is super nice. He let me redo an assignment when I made a dumb mistake in it. He responds fast and is flexible.
I took his class in a two week period, so it was a lot of work. But honestly with him as my teacher I would do it again. He is extremely helpful and you can tell he is so genuine. I really recommend taking him. He is so understanding and helpful.
Dr. Patton is a wonderful professor he is always ready to help, and he cares about your academic success just as much as you do. You have to be sure to communicate with him if you're finding it difficult and need more guidance and he will surely explain. Social Psychology is a fun course because it requires a lot of note-taking and lots of reading.
Caring guy! So nice, participation is key because all the tests are open note on the notes from lectures he gives. They're pretty interactive but not forcing you to participate. Very easy to go to for help very understanding made me feel more comfortable all around.
Dr. Patton is probably the most organized and respectable professor I've had the pleasure of taking a class with. I took his PSY111 2-week course, and I was very nervous going in because of how little time there was to learn everything, but as long as you plan ahead and prepare to read every day, you'll be fine.
Dr. Patton gives a clear outline of what he expects in the course. The material is actually really interesting, BUT NOTES ARE A MUST. He's willing to utilize a creative spin to keep his students interested in the lessons, through youtube. He responds super fast, he's surprisingly super supportive of his students, and extremely down to earth!
He's nice, easy to reach and very detailed
Great Professor who cares about his students and their success and wants to see them succeed
10/10 recommend taking this course with professor Patton. He grades quick, responds quick, and is there to help with any questions you may have. Each module had a fascinating topic and the readings were enjoyable. He also makes it even more enjoyable by adding in videos from youtube to go along with the learning assignments.
I have learned a lot in his class but he can be very blunt which is helpful and unhelpful. I don't love the assignments they sometimes seem a little redundant but the material we go over in class is always very educational. Just make sure you study A LOT for the exams.
Hes really funny and engaging as long as you actually try in his classes
This was an online class, but the professor was very easy to access and caring regarding grades. This was an easy class to succeed in!
Term-long group project for an 8 week course with a 20 minute presentation. Tons of note-taking but very easy material. Know your stuff for exams because they're closed-note. Not too great on feedback for assignments related to the project. Would recommend the class because it's moderately easy but suggest taking it in a longer term than 8 weeks.
fun class that looks like a lot at first but he helps you through it
I went in with low expectations due to it being an online summer class and was shocked at how great the class was. Canvas is well organized with clear expectations of knowledge and when assignments and exams are due and what you should know. He is accessible and promptly answers any questions. 10/10 and would love to take another class with him!!
100% Loved this professor. Most of the work was reading/watching assigned material and answering questions on a study guide. Professor uses Perusall for readings and has collaborative notes. The exams require a Lockdown browser, however you can use notes that you've taken throughout the modules. The content within the course was fun to learn!
The class average was less than a 50% on every assignment he hand-graded.
I really enjoyed my class with this professor. If you show a little bit of care for the class, he is really nice! The material is lecture heavy, with a small amount of online work to do as well. Unfortunately, it's clear that you need to take notes during class, but he also never outright states that. Nonetheless it's clear he cares as an educator!
He created a very uncomfortable environment and made numerous inappropriate comments throughout the semester. He was not helpful when asking questions and he didn't teach. He read straight off of a slideshow or watched documentaries each class. We weren't allowed to use any devices for notes (if you didn't use paper, you lost participation points)
Took accelerated 2-week course. I like how he had grading system set up as points versus percentages. Graded things pretty fast. But boy he was not very helpful when you needed to revise something. Gave very short and blunt comments under assignments with 0 guidance on how to fix your mistakes. Maybe he's better in person class vs online.
•fast grader •simple tests •responds within the same day usually between 8am - 5pm. If you are contacting him outside of those hours, he will most likely respond the next day. I took the 2 week online summer course and we used perusall for work. Most of the grades are from reading and discussion points which have the most weight on your grade.
The workload is heavy & the exams are open note, but don't expect them to be easy. You need to have detailed printed notes sunce you have to use lockdown browser, & just having your notes isnt to enough to ace the exam. It's a lot of work, but if you stay on top of things, you can get an A. This class would probably be easier in person than online.
This was the best class I had here. Proffesor Patton was supportive and made the class interesting. The only bad thing was getting stuck with a girl in our group who didn't do anything. but he tried to get her to do more when we told him.
Professor Patton is an excellent professor who makes his class clear, engaging, and easy to follow. He is approachable, supportive, and responsive to questions, and he genuinely cares about student success. He stays engaged with assignments and creates a positive, encouraging online learning environment. Highly recommend.
