Very helpful and keen on the students' performance ability. A great teacher.
One of the best profs at UVic. Really explains material; great sense of humor!
Fun class; good readings and easy tests; very approachable fellow
Really great

Decent teacher; material doesn't always comprehend well;kinda attractive though!
Great class, great prof... Funny guy, I strongly recommend him....
Funny and caring.
Amazing teacher, great style, good humour, one of the best prof's at UVic!!!
Amazing teacher. Very helpful, great appraoch, basically makes sense of it all.
Explains well, good assignments, funny. Great prof.
so funny! and damn sexy (don't know quite why..)
Funny, funny, and did i mention funny
Great prof, funny as hell, and not too bad to look at either!
Amazing prof. Fav one ever. Funny. Sexy though hard to explain how. Great!
funny and sexy. who could ask for more...in a teacher of course

Reminds me of a High School teacher, but in a good way.
Sexiest guy in Uvic!!!
reminds me of that stoner guy on snl!
i'd probably enjoy his class more if i was better at my vocabulary.
awesome
Great prof - knows his stuff and makes class interesting.
in case anyone was wondering, he definitely knows his stuff in the upper=-level classes too. And he sings like an angel!
Fantastic, he is great to listen to, very energetic, and very sexy!!!
Er ist ENDTOLL! Brauche ich mehr sagen? ;) Believe me, his outlandish sense of humour, openness and style of teaching was part of the reason that I got an A+ in the class I took with him...a great prof, and a great friend as well.
made me want to take all his classes.
Matthew Pollard was awesome for german 200, sense of humour is excellent, I was very entertained as well I enjoyed the class, spent a lot of the time thinking how lucky his girlfriend is.
Excellent teacher. His enthusiasm is infectious and whether you are interested in the Germans or not, he will ensure that by the end of the course you are fascinated (with him too).
I just wanted to point out that I DON'T think that Matt is the Brad Pitt of UVic - more like Goethe, actually. I learned a lot of good tips about this German language stuff he usually teaches. Quite impressive. Keep on rockin', dude!
Fabulous teacher! Energetic and enthusiastic about the topic, one of the best teachers I have encountered!
Very energetic and exctited about material. But also has an awesome sense of humor. One of the best lecturers I have encountered.
He is such a nice guy and super helpful when you approach him. His tests are pretty easy if you actually do the readings.
Excellent teacher. I would take any of his classes anytime. Very funny and witty and is able to explain concepts in a memorable and clear way. Definalely the best german teacher i've had. Very nice and approachable. Is always there to help. A++ rating.
Beware of the **** umlauts and dative case preposition song! He's an awesome teacher, keeps you interested, makes you laugh, and even makes you LEARN. You just can't help it. Pretty good looking even with the long hair too.
It sounds like an after school special, but Matt makes learning fun. He is friggin hilarious, which motivates u to come to class. Super nice guy always willing to help. If I had my way I'd only take classes taught by this guy. He puts the rest to shame
I took a Nietzsche class a few summers ago with Matt. AWESOME. Matt is one of the smarter profs on campus and his lecture style is erudite but understandable. Give this guy tenure!!
Absolutely fantastic!Interesting, amusing, helpful and funny. He's like a poster child professor. Plus you actually learn the stuff too. It's worth working your schedule around him!
Love it when a man knows his stuff and is sexy looking as well.
Funny, helpful, and hot.
He's hilarious, it's a great class!
great sense of humour, fun lectures. I learned a ton of information in such a short time ... i had no previous experience with german and by the end of the term I had a basic knowledge of how to communicate! this prof is an amazing teacher and honestly makes you love german.
awesome prof, great sense of humor, makes you want to come to class and always keeps things interesting
Great Professor great sense of humour, nows his stuff, but his German pronounciation is terrible. He makes Arnold Schwarzenegger look like a soft speacker. My tip take him as a German History professor but avoid him as an German teacher.
His passion is evident in his lectures. Very down to earth. His classes are a delight, highlighted by his intellect and wit. This overall package in a prof made the class very enjoyable. One of the best profs I've had. More profs should be like Matt.Highly recommend this man. Charles Morgan as well.
Easy marker, great lectures, very approachable.
Very easy market. Interesting lectures, does not assign too much homework. Better for film and culture classes than language because he will not push you too much, which can be good or bad. Hilarious in class.
sexiest man alive
He marks way too easy. He makes the course very easy as well. Even for students with no previous knowledge of German, he is the prof that will boost up ur GPA. The exams are super easy, half of the class got over 90%, myself included. Lectures are interesting with some jokes and easy course materials. Highly recommend.
very easy marker, good gpa booster. generally chose exceptional films and encouraged group discussion. course readings were a breeze. attendance counts but its worth going to the films anyway. the only drawback is that he sometimes doesn't give breaks and goes overtime, which can be trying in a 3 hour class. still, highly recommended.
Very easy marker, yet coursework allows interested students to persue their own research. Funny, brilliant, very personable.
Easy marker? That depends - anything over an A- I had to work hard for. Yes, brilliant, personable, and passionate about his subject.
Always a pleasure to attend the class. Matt is somewhat disorganized at times, but he makes class interesting and clear. Great for learning a language from a native English speaker because you get a more inside look at difficulties that you might encounter when learning a second (or third, etc) language.
Great teacher! He makes going to class enjoyable. Very clear and helpfull. Great sense of humor.
easy course! just show up to class and most of the test is straight from class notes. perfect elective to boost ur gpa :)
germans hard. as in the language itself. with that said i still did hardly any work and pulled off a B+. The midterm was amazingly simple, the assignments are a guaranteed 90% (its mostly marked for completion) i think hes a great teacher, pretty legit.
Matt's worth taking a class with. He effectively teaches interesting material with a good sense of humor and cynicism about it all. He goes over readings repeatedly, though, which can make lectures a little boring. He could and should expect more of his students, but that's really his only fault. That also doesn't mean he doesn't care about them.
very helpful prof, wants you to do well. will make arrangements for make ups on quizzes or handing things in late as long as you explain and are honest. fun teaching style uses amusing examples to keep it interesting. great prof
A great prof, knows his material and has interesting lectures. Funny too!
great prof. loves these subject, he actually made his wife watch Hedwig & the angry inch b4 they got married! write down anything that he repeats. fairly easy class overall
Pollard makes German so much fun. Worth schedualing your timetable around. Absolutely hilarious, enthusiastic, and interesting. Assigments are fun and creative, lectures are fun and creative, even tests are fun and creative. Highly intelligent. You definitely have to know your stuff, but put in some effort and hardwork and you'll do well!
Wow, this prof is the VERY BEST. I agree with the comment before this, and would add how totally unexpected he is. So casual, laid-back, down to earth. Constant 80's references are a scream! The best possible prof, one of the best at UVic.
This guy is the bomb! He made learning a language, which can be very tedious a lot of times, a blast! Lots of different material, great teaching methods, and tons of references to obscure pop culture stuff. And he's always telling jokes... but very knowledgeable. A great balance! Take German with him!
A was easy, but I don't know what he wanted for the A+. The class required very little work, but attendance was taken. I'd recommend for an easy above-average mark, but getting an A+ seemed pretty hard to get.
AWESOME Prof. Was funny, witty, and truly passionate about what he taught. Was a fair marker and clearly indicated what he wanted in a paper or in the midterm. Would definitely take another course with him!
Dr. Pollard was an excellent speaker who really dove into the material. He made fun commentary and was available for help at anytime. Although the class does not require prior knowledge of German, I liked his uses of German and fits of German type outbursts. Very entertaining! Essay final is the downside though. Yuck. At least u can prepare ahead.
Great Prof, really funny and always made the topic at hand as interesting as it could be, we even got to watch part of Gladiator for the class. Thanks Matt
Great teacher: Helpful, entertaining, clear and can really make learning a foreign language fun and rewarding. Highly recommended.
This man is great for keeping things interesting. His expectations are clear and every assignment that will be graded is on the syllabus. I would take another class with him.
Excellent Professor -- very entertaining; he keeps the subject very, very interesting and keeps his students motivated. He is not, however, afraid to call ppl in class to answer questions so you should try to keep up to date with the material/not skip class. A FANTASTIC GERMAN PROF WHO WILL MAKE YOU ABLE TO LEAD A CONVERSATION IN THE LANGUAGE.
What an entertaining guy. More than half the time I leave German class with a big grin on my face. He could be a bit more...linear and explicit with grammar rules during class, however if you read the book you will learn it.
While he has good ratings, I find that he is not very good at teaching German. His proficiency in the language is questionable. He speaks English to the class most of the time. I learned very little, and still received an A+. He is funny and entertaining, and that is why most students like him. When teaching GERS classes he is much better.
Dr. Pollard is a great professor! He's funny, helpful and he motivates you to learn German.
Take a class taught by this man, you won't regret it.
A warm, welcoming and whitty prof. Pollard is approachable and hilarious I would recommend anyone to take his classes -- German or Germanic studies of which I've taken both.
Amazing Professor. Smart, communicable, witty, and thought provoking. I am going out of my way to take another class with him.
Very nice, funny person, but the lectures eventually got a little dry and he seemed to not focus all the time. The powerpoints can be a bit confusing so make sure to take supplemental notes, and don't think that you don't need to do the readings. Exams were fairly easy. Don't expect speedy e-mail replies though!
Dr. Pollard is awesome. He has made German 100A really fun and easy to learn. He uses the textbook often, but it's worth it. It was an expensive text book but good for more than classes so it's worth it if you are going to stick with it.
Great teaching, very big on classroom participation (which some language teachers don't seem to care about). Used the textbook daily which is great! Overall a great teacher who peaked my interest in German. Highly recommend him!
Matt taught me couple other classes too, and I thought he is great, shows lots of excitement and will always try to answer your questions the best he can. Easy marker too, I thought. His Kafka class was very interesting and gets students thinking. His lecturing recommended. Very artsy, funny, intellectual personality. Go Matt.
Matt is an exciting instructor. Class is usually interesting and worth going to. Kafka and Fritz Lang were my favorite courses taught by him. The Nietzsche course had a lot of potential to be wonderful but fell short--it wasn't very exciting. He takes a long time to mark papers, but he makes up for that in being a good guy. Highly recommended!
My favorite German teacher so far! I had Polard for 100A and Schuetze for 100B, and even though Schuetze is also a fantastic prof, Pollard made the material seem so much clearer. He has an awesome sense of humour too, so class with him is never boring. Just make sure you go to class as you get marks for attendance. He's everyone's favorite!
german is a difficult language, but he seems to go at just the right pace. he is a good-natured and clear professor who writes fair tests. i'm glad i had him as a prof. make sure to attend class and keep up with the vocab and you should be fine.
super chill dude. i think he knows how hard it is to learn and pronounce german and is super forgiving on students just learning. he's really nice, helpful, and clear. german is hard but he goes at an excellent pace. it's not like he's going to hold your hand and walk you through the course but if you actually try to learn, you'll get a good mark.
Great German prof, very helpful and keeps a solid pace.
Class does not make much sense or have much structure. Seems to be a Matt-personal-interest-course more than anything. Other classes with this prof are amazing though.
One of the best professor I've ever met.
Great guy. My personal favorite, although I will admit I know some people who dislike him. He remembered me four years after I took his class.
As a person, Matt is absolutely fantastic. GMST 100 however was so unstructured; he would just speak for the entire 1h 20 m basically about whatever he finds interesting. Because of this, the midterm was super tricky as it was essentially impossible to study for. Participation 10 % and attendance 10%. other than the midterm course work super easy
I think Polard is an excellent, fascinating, and helpful prof, but it should be noted that in classes like 100 he doesn't hand out A's very easily. Unfortunately, but understandably so, he reserves them for the true "exceptional" papers and presentations. This is not a gpa booster, but an extremely enjoyable and fair class.
Not a good professor if you are taking a course like a language course. He just talk for entire 50 minutes rather than doing some activities. IF he gives some activities with partner and say he will give 10 minutes, but in fact, he only give us 5 minutes. He also skip some of concepts in the book, and gives a questions that have not yet covered.
He's SO passionate about Germanic studies and his Intro to German Culture course is super interesting, but you have to do the readings and show up to class. Super nice and unbiased prof. Always helpful if you have questions.
Matt is the best prof for learning a new language. He's not even German which is a testament to how dedicated he is to the language - he had to learn it all too! His tests are super clear. Read the textbook before class and know your vocab. He loves when people volunteer answers. He definitely sparked an interest in German for me! I recommend!
Matt is a very likeable guy, he is intelligent but also makes classes interesting. Film based class so get ready to watch lots of boring films. The grading material was clear and as long as you do readings and understand concepts you'll be fine.
Very nice Prof for sure, but in a beginner German class (that clearly had a few German Canadians with a little more language knowledge than they should) he started speaking German, but not explaining what he was saying. Some 300 level language classes spoke more English than he ever did in his classes which didn't make it seem like a beginner class
Had him for my entire first year of UVIC and loved every minute of his classes. Matt is really a great prof. Attendance to lectures is mandatory as its a language class, but he understands if you can't make it that day for any reason. Tests and quizzes are pretty easy but get down to the important material. Would recommend German with him to anyone
Attendance is mandatory. Lots of breakout rooms. Overall easy class.
Great prof, very knowledgable and funny. Will definitely be taking more courses with Matt.
Matt was super nice, and it is a plus he isn't a native speaker. He understands the struggle. Sometimes he would neglect to explain things, maybe because no asked tho. Thankfully we had an assisting prof to help answer questions in breakout rooms.
Matt was very passionate about Germanic studies, and always made his lectures interesting and entertaining. Easy grader, and I actually learned a lot in his class that made me want to learn more. One of the better profs I've had.
Absolutely awesome. One of my favourite professors to date.
Best prof I've ever had! Had him for 100 and 342. He is very funny, very caring, doesn't assign too much work, and it's easy to get an A in his class.
Dr Pollard was one of, if not the best profs I have had thus far at UVic His lectures were hilarious, engaging and it was clear he has a passion for learning and teaching the German language. He has made me much more passionate about German
Truly one of the few kingly professors at UVic. Hands down best prof I've had.
Professor Pollard is an engaging instructor who makes learning German enjoyable. While attendance is mandatory, he's understanding if you can't make it. The class has a good pace, and using Unstuck study alongside the textbook is super helpful for study prep.
Great Prof, would be the goat at teaching a language.
Super engaging prof and an all-around fun guy to talk to! Shares study methods with class, very quick to respond to e-mails, gives good detailed feedback on assignments. Pretty light workload and a very enjoyable intro language class! Really cares about SLLC and willing to have good chats about German culture :-)
