Mr. Powell is a great teacher. He is very approachable and willing to help whenever needed. He is fun and knowledgeable. I suggest taking his class!
BEWARE!!! THIS TEACHER IS ONE OF THE WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD!!!! I TOOK HIS ONLINE COURSE, AND HE BARELY RESPONDS TO YOUR E-MAILS, YOU NEED TO ASK 10 TIMES TO GET 1 RESPONSE. HE LOVES BIG WORDS, (IT HELPS HIS EGO) YOU NEVER CAN REALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT HE WANTS WITH HIS PAPERS. DONT TAKE HIM!!!!
Powell is a decent lecturer, a friendly person and reasonably helpful. I made a B in his class but was frustrated by his lack of clarity about what was necessary to get the grade. One of the Mid-terms was a term paper which SUCKED. He required much more work than many others might have. Thumbs down.
Great teacher. I took his class once before and dropped it because he seemed like a very intimidating teacher. I took it again later and loved his class. I pulled an A which i didnt think was going to happen. If you read what you're supposed to read and are an active listener you can pull an A. He's an easy guy to get along with and will help you
He is very passionate about the material and getting through the students! The stuff can be intense as it deals with real issues such as ongoing racism, etc., so this class is not for the frail of heart. I learned immensely. Prolly the coolest prof at DVC and 1 of the best I've ever had. He's real.

I thought, for a black history teacher who also happened to be black, his comments were very disrepectful and stereotypical. Passing comments and topics rarely discussed in class would be part of testing but not any textbook subjects or things highly talked about.

Taking the class online was a bit difficult because the reading was dry. But Dr. Powell offered many different thought provoking ideas to explore in our discussions. His quizzes were a bit diffuclt because of their wording, but overall it was a good class
powell is a great teacher. he's extemely intelligent and funny. willing to help you if you are behind in something. only thing that makes his class difficult is the reading...lots of it everyday. a few unannounced quizzes, one midterm and one final. i would take him again in a heartbeat but i'm leaving.
Mr. Powell is DOPE, the best history teacher I've ever encountered, insightful, intelligent historical analysis, brings historical events into a perspective that examines relevance with regards to current events, and always available, can become a mentor and friend, just go talk to him durring his office hours, extremely helpful, highly reccomended
I would not recommend Mr. Powell's online course because he doesnt return e-mails for weeks at a time and the grading is unfair at times. There is no correlation between effort/insight and grade in his online class. Id recommend taking him in person rather than online. If you to sign up for the online class. Stay on top of it and check up every day
this clown should not be teaching. very unprofessional. its a shock he has a job and he seems to wing it most of the time. who does he think he is fooling? i am embarrassed for him. if he spent some time on teaching rather than rants about his personal life or unrelated topics it may be worthwhile, but not a college level class or teacher :(
This guy is clueless about teaching and students. The worst, boring lectures that are pointless. I should be tested on his life and political views since thats what he talks about rather than history. i should get a refund since i did not learn anything. not a college level class.
Not prepared for class, does not return work, not interested in students ideas just wants to talk about his pointless life. many dropped and the rest laugh at him. we should get a refund and apology from DVC.
I am a history major and was turned off by his biased, unorganized and unprofessional behavior. Do not take if you want to learn history or have a college level experience. This was the worst.
listen to these reviews cause they are true this one is the worst
powell is one of the best teachers i have ever had. our class was weird but he is knowledgeable and will tell you how it is. he talks about history in a way that shows how it is relevant and affecting us today. some of the stuck up people who go to dvc might not want to here it but if you are really interested in black history this is for you
I have to agree with some posters about Prof. Powell. If slavery is your main issue of History, then this will satisfy you. I don't think he's fair in grading, if he was, he would give you feedback on your papers and blogs. If he rated my paper a "b" then he should write why. Not recommended unless you don't care about History or just what a grade.
He assigns loads of reading and offers very little help on how to comprehend the text. Class started out interesting and became extremely boring. Does not respond to emails and steals his quizes from the online textbook. HE IS NOT RECOMMENDED!!!
very smart man. his class is mostly discussion. he's really cool and laid back and very interesting. extremely smart and really enjoys teaching. you have to read a lot and teach most of the material to yourself. but i would recommend him. i loved his class. awesome guy
I like Powell?s class. Puts lecture outlines on his website, so everything is pretty much laid out for you. Gives you a choice of take home or in class test. Really not a lot of reading for a history class. Good lectures with pictures and maps. Seems to care about his students. Very helpful. I recommend his class.
Good class. Good prof. I don't even like history and the class was still good. Powell is light-hearted, but he takes history seriously. Just wants you to think about history. Do the extra credit!
Prof. Powell is very nice in all his emails, and he's very down to earth...BUT his grading system is Greek to me. I feel I earned a better grade than I got, and he LOST/couldn't find some of the work I turned in! Also, if you need help it can be HARD to contact him. Nice guy, confusing as a teacher. Wouldn't take again.
he's a nice guy but too much reading!
unorganized and unprofessional. does not prepare for class and not at office hours. an example of what is wrong with the system. he is not accountable for anything or to anyone.
Mr. Powell is the coolest teacher ever!!! I really recomend taking his history 128 class! it is awesome! i swear u will love it!
I took the online version of his class, and I was definitely NOT impressed. THe amount of reading you had to do was ridiculous, and the tests were extrememly hard. It took him forever to grade papers, and respond to questions. He also had a lot of trouble posting assignments and stuff. I recommend that you Take this class in person, NOT ONLINE!
Good teacher. At times the reading can be heavy but the good discussions and flexible testing (take home option) make up for it.
Very good material. Great perspective on early American history.
I took his online class- AWFUL! Rarely ever writes back to your emails. Posts tests and assignments late. It was nothing but complaints for everyone taking the course.
This teacher is worthless. I don't mind reading, but that's all he has you do. He doesn't teach you anything. If you have a question on the material or just about anything, he does not respond to you at all. This class became a self taught class where the students helped each other out. I don't need my hand held, but I expect my questions answered.
I did NOT like this class. You have 2 books to read/be quizzed on each week, which can be a LOT. He expects WAY too much from the discussions for what they are and the blog posts seem pointless. You can't access the quizzes until he makes them available, which drove me nuts b/c I like to wk ahead. He DID respond to emails and semi-promptly.
i hateddd history.. then i took this class and loved it! you can tell he actually cares about history. he's really chill.. pretty cute (in an older man way) ;) and just a nice guy. tests are online, so theyre open note and you get 2 chances to take them. attendance isnt that big a deal since tests are on web ct, but he makes you wanna go to class!
Doc Powell is pretty cool. I started out dreading the idea I had to take history, but now that it's over there are a few things that I'm rather interested in and will now look into further now that the class is over. He doesn't necessarily respond to emails directly, but if say there's a problem with the way grades or quizzes posted on WebCT, the
Prof Powell, was very cool always answer questions on time (this was an on-line class) a lot of reading and work, made the class go by quick
Dr. Powell is one of the best profs I have ever had. He is so passionate about the topic and translates it really well to the students. easy to understand requirements and is one of the nicest most helpful teachers. There is a lot of reading but he assigns interesting anecdotes to the course.
Not a bad teacher. Easy to talk to and really tries to help his students succeed.
BESIDES BEING BRUTALLY HOT--;-) mR. powell is a friendly guy. Contacting him via email/office hours/is difficult. Often has his music playing at beginning of class which is a relaxed atmosphere to learn in. He often began class late. HEAVY Reading. Online quizzes were surprisingly challenging.beware of double negatives on quizzes and tests.
I took Powell's 127 &128 class. He is a GREAT teacher! very helpful. Can go a little off topic sometimes but otherwise you learn a lot!! I highly recommend him if you want to have fun while learning history!!!
very friendly and teaches in a way that's easy to understand. most tests are online/open book but it's still hard. Mostly a lecture class - he goes off topic but it's an interesting discussion - with only tests and midterm/final. Wonderful experience...i'm definitly taking him again!
I took his 128 class and it was amazing! He is a teacher who really cares about al of his students and he encourages many to talk during discussion and even visit him during his office overs. The readings can be a bit difficult, but as long as you try and pay attention you should be fine! You barely use the textbook! Take him!
Seriously, this class was easy. Yes he does expect the student to read, but that's what we're here for. A must take instructor. Always willing to review course material, and always willing to help.
i cant believe i havent seen a chili pepper for this guy! he was super cool. online tests really got me to read and study, even though it felt like i wasnt because it was open book. he was awesome about updating webct so check it often. very interesting class.
Powell is one of the best teachers I've had at DVC. Especially for an online course, he is totally on it. Responds to emails and is very helpful. Summer classes are always intense, but he makes it as painless as possible. Highly recommend.
the summer term online class is just very easy for us
Powell is pretty chill. Most of the time, you do nothing in class. He tries too hard to be that influential teacher in your life. There's a couple papers and some writing quizzes. I would not take another class with him.
He's a really cool teacher. He really knows what he's doing and helpful at the same time. I really recommend you to take his class.
I loved this class! Powell was really passionate about the subject and cared about his students. The lectures were interesting and easy to listen to. Quizzes were online and open book, and he gives you an option of in-class or take home for both final and midterm. I highly recommend taking this class, Powell is a great teacher and uh ~~cute AF
Powell feigns interest in supporting african american and people of color in his classes and yet does no more than talk. Few people of color were left at the end of the semester --theclass was filled with p.o.c's at the start. He is cool and chill plays music during class.dont be fooled and dont expect a real commitment to your education from him
Mr. Powell is such and awesome professor. He really knows his stuff, and i love that he teaches like University Professors do. Not something just out of the book, but lecture, engaging, conversational teaching. I would highly recommend taking his class--you will not only walk away with new knowledge but also a professor that works with your style.
Very clear but hard to get in contact via email
I had him for lecture and he was just horrible. His powerpoints weren't clear at all and his lectures were completely boring. The books we used never matched with what he was lecturing about. He never responds to emails in a timely matter. Not an easy class and not an interesting one. I love history but he made it so hard for me to like it.
By far one of the best teachers you will find out there. Goes out of his way to make history interesting. Super chill, is always late to class, doesn't take roll, lets you out early. Honestly, you will get out of it what you put in. Go to his office hours, talk to him. Very inspiring, very funny, and awesome.
My favorite teacher at DVC easy A as long as you show up for class and do the 2 or 3 homework assignments he gives. MidTerm and Final are take home essays. Interesting and Funny!!!
Heavy reading, quizzes based on reading. Quizzes are often put up late or not at all, and he absolutely does not respond to emails - one quiz marked me wrong when I know I was right, he still didn't respond. Phones in these online classes, I guess maybe take him in person but honestly I would skip it. Not a great teacher.
Took the class in person. 2 in class assignments. 3 papers total including final & midterm.and some online quizzes. Only 1/4 of class showed up for lecture. Hard to get in contact with e-mail. Do not get this teacher. Just don't.
Honestly, his lectures are pointless. Goes off topic and has conversations with his students about nothing. I didn't learn too much in his class and was hoping to. He's a real friendly guy but not a great teacher.
This is a self study class. Matthew Powell is 100% hands off. It is easy to get a good grade, but don't expect any help from the instructor. You will have to read a lot, and the quizzes are pretty simple. Even for an online class, it upsets me that the instructor is getting paid when there's no lecture and the syllabus was set up years ago.
Mr. Powell is by far my favorite teacher I've ever had at DVC and possibly my entire school career. His in class lectures do get off topic at points but he'll get right back on track, great at relating things in history to what is going on today. He is by far the most laid back teacher and funny as well. Emailing him wont get you a response though.
He is so easy all u have to do is stay on top of the discussion by coming to class and u don't have to buy the book he prints up what u need to read !!! Take him if u need to just transfer and u wanna a fun class
I took Powell for my Black History class. He is very passionate about his work and this was clear by his way of spreading social awareness, but as a white student he made me feel pretty uncomfortable. I felt he encouraged hate rather than promote equality through our nation's history. Not very responsive over email but work load is little to none.
Taking the online version of 120 - I'm getting annoyed with how long its taking to get things graded. Assignments turned in months ago are still ungraded. So this is the first semester Powell has used D2L and that's part of his excuse, however that's complete BS. I don't know if he's overloaded or what, but I wouldn't recommend him at this point.
mr. powell is a super cool guy. All you need to do is show up for class (which he will add up attedance and give you extra credit) do all the online quizes which are really easy and a midterm and fianl which he gives you all the information for a head of time. great guy and teacher. wants you to pass. Easy A forsure if you do everything.
Powell is a really great guy! He's understanding, keeps you interested and you can tell he loves what he does. There are a lot of online quizzes, a midterm, an extra credit opportunity and a final paper/test. He also gives extra credit if you come to class consistently.
Powell is a great teacher. If you do the online quizzes and do decently on the midterm and final, you should have an "A". An is "A" is an 88% in his class. He loves what he does, and he wants his students to succeed. Take his class
He is a good teacher. I took his class online and he always updates the grade quickly unless he has another job to do. There are 8 response papers and a lot of quiz. As long as you read the book you'll be fine because the quiz is not hard at all.
Awesome. Somehow manages to make history really interesting and I don't even like history. Lots of reading and online quizzes. Gives tons on extra credit. If you don't get an A, it's your fault because he gives you so many opportunities to improve your grade. Best professor at DVC.
Powell is a passionate teacher and he really allowed me to have a broader perspective on race and society as a whole. I do recommend this class although if you are white, as stated in previous rates, you may feel a bit uncomfortable when talking about certain issues. The class was eye-opening and in total we had 2 quizzes and a final paper.
I took his African American History class and he was very passionate and led many insightful discussions. There is almost no homework or tests, just some vocab quizzes and occasional in-class writes that he usually gives a heads up on. There is a final paper. Overall it was a laid back, very easy class which made it enjoyable and not stressful.
Very much got my interest in Latin American history considering I thought it would be a boring course. Greatly simplifies complex societies and cultures so a general audience could understand the topic.
I am a straight A student I am currently in this class with an 87%, 88% is an A. You turn in homework he does not grade it for about 3 weeks and by that time he grades everything you turned in, so you don't know what to fix for the next homework assignment. He never responds to emails, and i can't make it to office hours. Do not take wastes time
Professor Powell was a great professor. It was the first time I had taken an online class and it was a great experience overall. His class was thought provoking and helped me broaden my understanding of history as it REALLY happened. I definitely recommend.
Well, this class is easy, but just don't expect him to reply your email.
Took class online and it was an easy A. Prof Powell follows syllabus and his instructions are clear an easy to follow. Textbooks a must and you need to read them, but quizzes were not timed and Reading Response papers easy. Gives good feedback on what to improve on when quoting and gives extra credit. This is an easy history class to take.
Chronically late, doesn't reply to email, and has a tendency to go off topic, so hard to take seriously. All in all is an okay teacher content-wise. Be sure to read! If you don't read, you won't pass this class.
Powell can be outspoken and confrontational but he cares a lot about his students. He's extremely passionate and rewarded by teaching. Regular quizzes on the reading so try and keep up. Also, his lecture style is not for everyone: Powell talks a lot on current events and spends maybe the last 20 minutes on a powerpoint. One essay, one midterm/final
He is an easy grader. The response papers were hard, but he gives a lot of extra credit, so getting an A is fairly easy. There are a lot of quizzes, but most of them accessible on quizlet.
Talks way too fast. Doesn't teach to the test, you have to buy 2+ books. Quizes are online, questions aren't even from the book or lecture. He doesn't write anything himself and expects you to know as much as he does. I DO NOT recommend taking him if you have a learning disability.
I take his online class and what i do mostly were making response paper about the questions he assign. Make the format as good as possible because he really pay attention to it. He gives a good feedback and you better pay attention to it because it will really helps you.
Really there for his students! Not too tough of a class, just show up and you'll most likely pass
I took his History 120 class and I loved it. He may get off topic at times but when he does it really means something. He really makes sure that you know that he's there for you if you need help. Quizzes and tests are fairly easy. If you don't make at least a B in his class its on you.
I'm trying to figure out how am I black and received a C in BLACK HISTORY. I'm pissed of on how we basically didn't do ANYTHING all semester and then all of sudden he wants to cram everything in all at once. He gets off topic way to much. He takes weeks to grade. I wouldn't recommend his class ever.
I took his Hist-120 online class. It's super easy A. When you study before taking the quiz, go to quizlet "Foner". It sometimes helps you understanding the modules more profoundly. The language of "Zinn" is difficult, but he knew it. So, it's only a small % of your total grade. Write RP meticulously!!! His weakness is only 1. NOT replying email.
The quizzes are very easy and it is unlimited time so take your time and make sure you get every question correct. Their is one response paper a week 250 words. Listen to his feedback and you'll be fine. 88% is an A so you have some extra room! Gives like 35 extra credit points. But you probably won't need it if you turned in all assignments fully!
EASIEST A+ EVER! Take him! Take this class online cause the quizzes are easy & the answers are all online!! There are 250 word essays due every week but they're pretty easy. Grades easy as well. I got 100% on my essays. Takes forever to grade stuff & never replies to e-mails but it's no big deal. 35 points of E.C. but I didn't even need it. 88% A
Great professor. Down to earth and humorous. Passionate about subject. Shares his experiences which makes content seem relate-able. One midterm and one final; with multiple choice and a handful of essay questions(you pick 2). Online quizzes for every chapter. Be attentive and TAKE NOTES if you want a good grade. Speak up if you can. Oh & he's hot.
He didn't really help me much when I asked for help on my term paper. He just gave me a book and told me to read on there onward. I still don't understand why he doesn't want to help his students as much. As if, it's considered "cheating" to ask help for a term paper? Needless to say, he gave me a terrible grade, when I clearly went to him 3 times.
Here is the thing about powell, he is a good guy and i great teacher when he wants to be, other days his ego gets in the way of his teaching. His grading criteria arent clear and good luck getting him to answer an email. But his lectures are good and he promotes intelligent discussions. i just wish he was more helpful and less lenient.
Good/funny teacher who loves history, but wasn't my learning style. LOTS of reading. Every class is a lecture. Doesn't interact so much with students while lecturing which makes it boring to just sit there and listen, but again not my learning style. Most of the time couldn't even relate his lectures to the readings, but online quizzes are easy!
Came into the Class with a failing grade because apparently we were supposed to prepare a paper on the 'History of ourselves' which was worth 25 points due first day of class. Never called for attendance and was very uncomfortable doing tests in the lecture hall. Wouldn't recommend.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. He cares so much about his students and their success, he will go out of his way to accommodate your needs. There is reading to do, but it's nothing excessive. The work load is easy. he will change your perspective & enlighten you & engage you. Take his class(es)
Professor Powell is the most amazing teacher I had in my entire life. He is very passionate and loves History. He cares and wants his students to really succeed. My favorite subject was always History. I planned on majoring in Criminal Justice but because of him, I changed my mind to History! He is very inspirational and I love talking to him.
I've taken Powell for 2 different classes and he's a really cool guy. He often addresses important current topics and relates them to his lectures. He doesn't assign that much work and his tests are pretty easy because he tells you exactly what you need to know. He can he hard to get a hold of at times but overall is good teacher
Powell is the best teacher i've had at DVC so far. I took him for 2 semesters and am sad that I don't need to take history anymore. He cares so much about all of his students, he does take a long time to grade assignments and give a final grade back, but the life lessons he teaches in class are priceless. Take his AfrAm classes!
Great professor and cares about each student individually. Lecture everyday and online quizzes but the answers are on quizlet. One midterm and one final. I thought that I was going to fail the class because I failed both and still ended up passing with a B. He offers a 30 pt extra credit assignment and also he does take roll for 25 pts extra credit
Took HIST 120 online and it was a great learning experience. Not too difficult, Powells a great professor that i would take again. Take his class , put the work in and youll get an A, especially in his online class
took this class online & it was a hybrid class, it was THE EASIEST course I have ever taken! there is about 2 quizzes every week and one 250 word response paper every week. Basically if you wrote the response paper and it was 250 words you got an A on it. All the quiz answers are on quizlet. he's bad at responding to emails.
Pretty much everyone below stated the truth. If you take his online hybrid class... it's going to be one of the easiest classes you will ever take. He has a structure of only 8 writing responses (which are 250-350 words max) and 2 easy quizzes per week. If you follow all the steps, it's an easy A. I'd recommend him to any student.
Professor Powell is a really cool guy who is very passionate about what he teaches. I enjoyed his class but be warned it is just powerpoint lectures for an hour and a half. He is very biased towards his opinions on things and gets very passionate about his views, so if you do not like that I do not recommend him. There are a lot of quizzes as well.
Its really easy to pass his class. Quizzes are online, plus most are found on Quizlet. He is a very nice and funny. He does get off topic; almost all the class. Sometimes his classes can be very dull. But you can see he really cares about his students.
Powell is a good speaker and passionate about his views but for a history teacher comes across as bias. If your white male, republican or not anti police be prepared for a lecture on how they are out to get young black men. That said its a good class for a different point of view and I did enjoy talking to him in and out of class.
I took this class online over the summer and it was pretty much what I had expected. He doesn't give any homework but gives quizzes each week based on the reading.
He's very caring
The best teacher ever. Period, no need to say more.
He's really pessimistic and his lectures are depressing.
Professor Powell's class is just him lecturing, which is not very interesting, but isn't the worst thing ever. You do have to read the textbook for his class. If you don't you will not pass any quizzes or tests. However the quizzes are online, which means you can use the textbook for them. Basically, Powell isn't great, but isn't bad either.
I fell asleep almost every class, long boring lectures, but thats because I don't like history, about 12 online easy quizzes that you can fine on quizlet, a mid-term and final, you could probably skip a few classes and get an A as long as you read the textbook.
Open book quizzes he gives more than one chance to take quizzes for higher grade. Shows some mercy on midterm. make sure you take notes and read both books questions for midterm and final from these. He shows no mercy on final! Would take again Im not a great student and almost pulled off a B. He wants you to pass! som might say easy A
The class isnt that bad, the quizzes are all found on quizlet! you can pass and not show up all the time. His lectures can be boring.
His African-American history class was one of the best classes Ive ever taken. Hes intelligent and knows a lot about history. His lectures can get boring for some but still and overall good teacher. Easy A, just a few quizzes and two essays
I took his online History 120 online class during the summer. You have to do a lot of reading but the answers are found in the book or quizlet (sometimes). If he gives sample homework I recommend reading it because he likes it a certain way. Pretty easy class if you put in effort.
Professor Powell's African American history classes are awesome; Powell is passionate and knowledgable about the subject. I suggest HIST 127/128 to anyone who wants a more holistic approach to American history. Powell does tend to get carried away with material at times, but it's definitely not unbearable. He also is not the best at communication.
Professor Powell is an ok professor. His classes are boring, but he doesn't give a ton of homework. However he entered my grade wrong at the end of the semester and then told me I had a B instead of an A. I wrote to him several times to no avail. He finally changed it five months later after my mother threatened to report him to his superiors.
Painfully slow grader. Impossible to contact. Does not care if you learned anything. An easy A, but not a good professor. If you have technical difficulties with his online class, too bad! Want to know what grade you got? Wait 2 weeks.
He's a really smart and nice guy. The class is not very hard at all. He is passionate and wants you to learn smth in his class (whether about history or current issues). He also really cares for his students. Remember to check the schedule to know when quizzes are coming... also you don't need to read the chapter just learn the vocab definitions
He never replies email no matter you ask him questions about essay or homework or even just the question about the history. And it is online course, so, very terrible. I would never take this professor again, waste of the time and tuition, cause he is not helpful at all, offers 0 help. He is just very irresponsible.
Every class Is him lecturing the entire time. Online quizzes that you can find on quizlet, midterm, and a final. Both are essay and multiple choice. Wouldn't suggest him if you aren't good at history.
He's an okay professor, it's just a really boring class because of the long lectures and constant writing down of the notes so you'll snooze off, missed it? he definitely won't go back. The textbooks weren't cheap, only buy them if you're going to follow along the course by reading. 2 exams, both essay and multiple choice. Wouldn't take him again.
Likes to stick it to his students so he can feel smart. Incredible amount of deliberate trick questions on tests (Why? What's the point of this?). Marks down papers that are well written and adhere to the criteria because they did or didn't do/cover things he never specified. Doesn't respond to disputes or inquiries. Take someone else if you can.
Dr. Powell is a great professor but he's really bad at communicating with his students and clearly has favorites in class. He's nice and understands students situations. Gives ample time to make up for tests. If you miss class you're definitely going to walk into something new next class, very fast paced.
Powell is a very reasonable professor. I didn't show up too often and when I did, I was late, but still got an A. Most of the grade is based on online "reading" quizzes, which have no time limit on them. However do make sure you are substantially prepared for the midterm and final, as it has a lot of MC and an in class essay. There is extra credit.
Powell Online Hist120 class is an easy A. USE GRAMMARLY OR A GOOD SPELL CHECKER! Cite Sources! #hoodstudent
BEST TEACHER YOU WILL EVER MEET IN DVC very humble man, easy A if u show up to his class , not a hard grader. His teaching skills are mad dope! A professional teacher
Mr. Powell is a good teacher, but the class is VERY lecture based there's lots of notes. The midterm and final will be really difficult even with the study guide so make sure to ask lots of questions. There are no other tests besides weekly quizzes (which you can find on quizlet) and those quizzes boost your grade a lot. He is really nice tho
SUMMER - Took Online. No Midterm or Final. Just a 10-question quiz on Canvas & a 1-page paper due together every 5 days. He will pick apart your essay on grammar, spelling, and commas. It's basically an English paper but it's only 1-page. Easy-A if you know how to write but he will irritate you with his editing corrections.
Powell comes off as a bit of a narcissist, he loves to talk about himself and his life, accomplishments, and future endeavors. There is NO STRUCTURE to his class. He seems like a fun person to know and chat with outside of class, but his teaching style and lack of organization throughout the semester makes him seem unfit as an educator.
This was a short term class & each week he gave us either a discussion or essay assignment paired w/ an online quiz. Easy grader as long as you meet all requirements. The online quizzes were difficult, but you can retake it as many times as you want. Terrible w/ communication though; he doesnt provide an email & rarely replies to canvas messages.
One of the most rewarding classes I've taken at DVC, and one of the best professors. Wonderful materials (textbook, handouts, films) to go along with the class instruction. Clear, well-organized lesson plans, clear grading criteria, good weekly overviews of what we'd be covering. Be ready to read & write...a lot, and to do so at a college level.
Super easy class taken online, however Professor Powell barely does anything for the class other than grade your work. He uploads all the assignments at the start of the semester, and doesn't provide any lectures or videos. Everything you learn is from reading the textbook. He basically doesn't bother to teach the class.
If you want to take a class that is truly self-learned this class is for you. We had weekly quizzes which were on Quizlet, papers which he was kind of picky about- as long as you knew what you were writing about you would be fine, and one or two discussions. He's an easy A if you do the work, but don't expect to learn.
An easy A. The professor just ask you to read, take quizzes that all are on Quizlet. Some writing assignments are difficult because tough grader but many extra credits given by the end of the course. Just do well, don't miss any assignments and do all quizzes and you'll get an A.
He is the worst teacher I've ever gotten. He uses inquisitive for most of his assignments. No lectures, no anything. You have to read the book by yourself. He doesn't even grade fast and he doesn't have clear grading criteria. It's an easy A but honestly, I was so stressed if that's even possible.
I felt like I was teaching myself the entire semester. The assignments are very vague and you basically have to try and figure it out yourself. I felt like I was trying my best but every time I got a grade back on an assignment it wasn't good enough. I wouldn't recommend taking this professor
Professor Powell is a really caring person and wants you to understand the material. If any problems arise feel free to contact him as he is very understanding. This class is interesting and the professor makes it enjoyable by making jokes! Really caring person!
Module Activities were stressful because of how picky the professor graded them, but the Inquizitive work was incredibly easy. Easy to pass, but a lot of effort for an A. Weekly primary source work, with a few annotation and discussion board assignments. Not good at writing? This class may be tough because of the weekly response papers/final.
Doesn't respond to messages. No lectures & reconsideration of grades. Doesn't grade fast (takes 2wks+ for summer sem). 2 InQuizitive quizzes & 1 essay/annotation/analysis. Doesn't forget to post the module every 5 days but that's it. Easy but also frustrating. Wanted to file a complaint but he's the department chair. Still no extra credit grade.
He's lazy and incompetent. Don't bother writing to him. He doesn't teach. Eric Foner, the book author, did. The least he can do is reply to the messages of his students other than posting the modules.
He doesn't teach you, but if you are an independent learner, this class is perfect. I'm a STEM major, so I needed an easy, do-it-yourself class. You won't learn anything, but you will get it done fast. Only 8 assignments for the whole class, no midterm or final (if you take accelerated 3 month). Just make sure you have very good writing skills.
WILL NOT RESPOND TO YOU AT ALL. Easy class, had hw every thurs and a few short writing assignments. Can be hard if you arent great at writing but still is a B if so. However if anything goes wrong he will ignore all your emails. Had to contact the dean to make him fix 0s on some assignments and still never replied. Had to spend $30 for the hw site.
Does not respond to Emails or messages on Canvas. You also have to teach yourself everything. If you love reading and teaching yourself then this class is the right fit. But if not don't take him.
Powell is great. He mixed things up--group work, some lecture were more like discussions, some quizzes. We read lots of sources in class. Passionate. Really made history alive. He obviously cares about his students. Im signing up for his other class. You have to go to class though. I missed a couple classes and it was hard to get back in the swing.
It's awful, he put all the homework together and used a weird website to let you do HW.
Tough, harsh grader, uses Turnitin for all papers, also use inquizitive to take the quizzes, tons of work per week, takes 4+ hours to finish the homework each week, and takes an average of 2 weeks for grading. Tough extra credit for listing 1hour of broadcast and summarizing it.
tons of paper to write, tough grader, use inquizitive which require lots of money to buy textbook and do quizzes
This is a relatively easy class but has many papers. He is kind of a tough grader, will penalize your points for those papers and you don't know why. Sometimes the discussion boards also require a lot of writing. He will have extra credit homework at the end of the semester, as long as you do it you will be fine.
Very easy class(And I consider myself a bad student)Aug26 to Oct18,2024(accelerated class)Powells uses a website called InQuizitive, do all 14 of them (Use Quizlet)easy points (1houreach/ 2perweek) You're assigned either a 250-350word paper or an annotation doc each week. No midterm, no final I want him for HIST121. Paid$35 total for hw and txtbook
This class is a mixed bag - easy to pass, but a lot of work for an A. The professor is hands-off, so independent learners will thrive. Writing assignments can be tough, but Unstuck AI and Quizlet were helpful for test prep. Overall, a decent class if you're willing to put in the effort.
Honestly i dont know why i took this professor after my friends told me he was hella hard to learn from but he is a cool guy though i just aint gonna recommend him like that. He cares but grades really harshly i didnt feel helped at all
I took Professor Powell Fall of 2016. Back then students needed an add code for the first two weeks of school if the classes were full. He gave other students add codes. He refused to give me one so I had to go to an office. He had to sign a form. He gave out only one essay, midterms once a month, and a final. Worse history professor of DVC,
I really liked this professor and was inspired by his lectures . The material was interesting and I learned a lot that I didn't know before
