he doesn't know how to teach. he is sarcastic and distant. he doesn't care about the class and the students, just has a superego and lives in his own little fantasy world. thinks he knows everything but he doesn't. all he has is an attitude and he acts like he knows it all. take some nicer instructor.

Dr. Rainbow was very helpfull. I learned alot of very great things in his class. Be prepared to study for the Quizzes they will get you if you dont. I reccomend Dr. Rainbow for a first time bio student. Very helpfull. And if you dont understand ASK AFTER CLASS!!
his material is easy and u get BIG points for drawing silly posters BUT the tests are strictly memorizing info. I'm talkin about memorizing charts and re-creating them from scratch, text boxes, definitions, pictures EVERYTHING from scratch on a blank template that matches ur study guide. AND he lost my final so he failed me!! wtf!
i did everything, got As on all tests, assignments, hw, but i ended up w/ a B because i failed his final cuz it was so impossibl, all of his assignments are redrawing pictures and rewriting stuff he gives us. it might help some ppl but for others, its just a waste of time. he talks about theology and evolution a lot but i guess its interesting
funny at times & a little bit ****ed with the things he says. i had fun in this class but i HATED redrawing and coloring EVERY LITTLE THING HIS way. if i made one little mistake, he would take off 5 points! that made me SO MAD & his final is practically impossible unless you begin studying 24/7 from the moment u get the info. i got a C >:[
His technique in teaching helps makes difficult subjects interesting and easier to understand. You can't help but learn about the subject if you do the required work.
The people who rate professors with a perfect 5 just want you to take a lame class so you can fail like they did. No one is perfect so you cant really trust if a teacher is good or not. Dr. Rainbow lets you do kinesthetics and expects you to repeat everything when you laugh although it is silly. But i guess he sure is better than my current prof.
Messed up teaching. He wants you to stand as if you are in grad school. Follow him around like he is the doctor. A nut. Good luck to anyone taking him. He is also disrespectful and hurts your feelings
A lot of drawing and coloring, very insistant on you "checking in" and paying attention. Does not allow you to take notes during class.
Dr. Rainbow should be teaching an art class, not biology. You lose points for not drawing worms and star fish correctly, oh yeah, and if it's not colored to his specific color choices you will also lose points, let's not worry if you actually learned anything in the class or not.
Dr. Rainbow is ludacris! He has so many tiny details to every page in the book that he wrote you can't even understand it. Everything is color coded with hot and cool colors. Test are basically recreating the same drawings and colorings that he has. You are not allowed to take notes and he makes you feel stupid if you can't quote him word for word.
OK let's check in here. If you like art. Take this class. If you don't want to take notes. Take this class. If you like standing up randomly during lectures. Take this class. This guy knows his stuff so much, that the study packet you by is created by him, and copyrighted. On his Midterms (2) You must draw, color code and label from memory. Tough!
He is a brilliant teacher, able to make hard to understand concepts into easily understood ideas. Be prepared to draw. Pay attention to what he teaches and do what he says, else you will have a hard time. If you do not have much spare time do not take this class. If you simply do what he says and pay attention, you shouldnt have a real hard time.
Are WE all checked in??? I received a B in this class. Thank God for Lab. His lab class is better than his lecture. You can learn alot, but he is all over the place and hard to keep up with. Also, not being able to take notes is a problem. He doesn't grasp that people learn in different ways. I had to hide to take notes, very crazy.

First of all... half of the people in here that gave him bad ratings don't even know their english. This teacher can teach. He sure is strict and irrtating but you can actually learn new things in his class that make you wonder. His assignments are for your own benefit of gaining knowledge. The ones who failed his class were just lazy.
He knows his stuff, but that doesn't help when you have to stand through the entire class and are not allowed to take notes. He alludes to huge homework assignments but doesn't give you the specifics until the last possible minute resulting in an unnecessary time crunch - he needs to consider that some of hisstudents work full time. Don't take him!
Wow and wow! This guy is seriously hard. Not a junior college level class. He's fair, but won't alow you to learn it your way. No note taking aloud, must watch him at all times and likes to make the class stand up in order to get your attention. If you're a science major, take his class, if not I wouldn't recomend it.

Ok, so Rainbow is suuuuuuper hard, no doubt about it. But I have never learned/committed to memory so many things in one semester. This class almost becomes your life, but it is amazing. He is amazingly smart and makes you work. Everyone had their hard times but he offers lots of extra credit. Tests are hard but do homework and you'll be fine
+:mmm ok he is very CAPABLE of teaching the class. He could be called a genius. HOWEVER, it was a nighmare being in that class. I don't know why I'm even still sane! All the info that you are supposed to learn you don't because of all the 1st grade, useless work is demanded. Not effective. Fair??? Not really (ask about the last week). good luck
i took him for lab and it was the easiest thing in the world. he really knows his stuff and will force you to understand it. easy A.
He is an AMAZING teacher,a little off at times, but still amazing! He teaches you in a manner where you're really able to understand the material. He's relatively easly as long as you pay attention and he really believes in holding a student's hand, figuratively speaking. Sure there are no note taking, but kinesthetics WORK! I use them myself!
HORRIBLE! I almost died in this class! everything was coloring and he talked about it like you had to color code everything to perfection and then he would look at it for ten seconds to grade it with you standing there! He won't let you take notes. If you don't want to end up shooting yourself at some point just don't do this to yourself.
I'm currently taking Dr. Rainbow for Lab. He kills two birds with one stone for me. I learn more in his lab than I do in my lecture with my lect. professor. Rainbow is super hard, but an awesome teacher. Even if I get a C it was worth it. If you're lazy then forget about this class. Those who diss him are just slackers. Trust me.
dr.rainbow is amazing, he has areal heart for what he does and a genuine nature to want others to understand that. i believe he wants the best for everystudent he teaches. his posters and studying are hardcore but he is great. i think he is a very humble man and deserve way better than he thinks including from his students! takehisclass youll learn
Okay, so now I've passed the class with a B. I'm satisfied cuz I worked my butt off! I recommend Dr. Rainbow to anyone who is willing to learn. I'm kind of sad the semester is over he's a real good guy who cares about his students' education. YOU HAVE TO BE ON THE COURT AND IN THE GAME!
AMAZING. If you are a science major, take Dr. Rainbow! You will dedicate so much to memorization, but you will learn and he will make sure of that. He is intimidating, but still nice and very flexible. Be forewarned, you will either love or hate the man and I fell head over heels!
I read the comments below and must say that those students must have REALLY been into Biology to like him. He is HARD and A LOT of work. He put up a transparency and only 4 people got an A on the two midterms combined. He assigns two posters that took myself and everyone I knew spent over 30 hours to do not including the other assignments he assign
He is anal about everything & doesn't grade everything the same-everyone gets marked off for different things. He is extremely stubborn & cocky in his beliefs & doesnt entitle you to your own-if you say you believe different, he will call you out & debate you until you agree w/ him. and if you miss more than 1 class you are dropped & cant be late.
I am a 4.0 and that class was EXTREMELY hard and waaay tooo much for 101. Not including that 10 people went to the school science Dean about him and the Dean agreed but said it's too hard to change anything.
Great teacher. One problem: He treats students as kinderndergarteners - not as college students. I'm a "above average" (near 4.0) student. I don't mind the hard work, all I ask for, is respect and dignity in return. We are adults here. Let's behave as such. I decided to drop his class rather than learn in a rather immature environment. This teacher is hot mess..his teachings are rdiculous and oh yea dont be 1 min late cuz he'll make u say a statment about how being on time is effeicient in the real world.ha i wouldn t take his class ever again. he would always be in my business an hes jus nosey...he crazy 2 he dropped me without even tellin me so I wouldn even add him!!!
He didn't know when class ended, got behind and then rushed us to try to catch up. The "8 hr posters" take 12 hours plus. He doesn't grade equally, if you draw well, you will do better than someone who completed the whole thing. The highest grades for lab and lecture were barely B's. He moved me twice during a test because someone sat next to me.
Yup, EVERY bad statement that below is COMPLETELY true. He is a selfish prideful jerk. I love school and he made me HATE going to that class. He aslo needs to practice what he preaches. And he compares everyone to 10 year olds. "my youngest son could do this as well as 3rd graders. if you can't, theres something wrong with you". Nice huh????
Wow he is a horrible teacher.Do not take his class! Prior to taking his class i loved biology after taking it i hated it. He dosent explain anything and his grading is very inconsistent!
I took this class several years ago. Dropped it. Did not appreciate the condescending, demeaning attitude. Little use of textbook, too much coloring and drawing. Too much use of kinesthetics. To be fair, he is probably attempting to cover all learning styles, but it feels more like Kindergarten than a college class.

I took his class in 02 or maybe 03. I thought the class was awesome. Dr. Rainbow rocks. I'm not a bio major or an art major but I got A's on all my posters. I still have them. Dr. Rainbow is a great instructor
I only took Rainbow for BIO 101 Lab, but I kind of wish I had taken him for lecture as well. His lab was a lot of work but I enjoyed his style. I'm going into Allied Health but after taking his lab he has also got me interested in Biology so I'm taking him again for Molecular Biology, BIO 110.
Very difficult to get a passing grade. No matter how hard you work, most end up retaking his class again, and again. He does not like to pass his students with anything better than a c.
I took Dr. Rainbow a year ago and though he has his rules and yes they may seem a bit... Dumb. He is strict so listen to him, and do the work he tells you to do. If you can draw, that is a plus there is a lot of that. But most people don't like him 'cause they have to earn a good grade. He doesn't give out grades to people who don't put in effort
Strict, forceful, really knows his stuff. He will put endless time and energy into helping you learn. And if you go to class you can't help but learn the important stuff.
Honestly, I can't stand him. I find his teaching method repulsive and his poster projects absolutely ridiculous.
Excellent Professor. Has a real passion for his subject and tries to pass that along to his students. He is all about getting the subject matter understood fully in the mind of the student. His poster projects are tedious but due to the laborious effort to complete them the material will be familiar afterward. Thank you Dr. Rainbow, you impact.
i took this teacher over the summer and got an A. his teaching style sucks, but as long as you do the work you will be fine. gives you the test answers ahead of time, so all you have to do is memorize them.
Honestly I read these comments below & somewhat disagree. Hes extremely smart but he is too hard on students. In order to "earn" that A, I spent 30-45 hours a week and I do very well in school. It was too much a 101 class. And for as much as there was, can anyone say they remember most of what they learned? I didn't because I was too overwhelmed.
i agree with the person below. i read a comment saying people dont like it cuz you have to earn the grade. im a straight a student. he is smart, but outright ridiculous. this is 101 people, not honors. he is the strictest and hardest teacher ive ever known and not in a "he wants you to learn way" - the man is stubborn anyway. its a risk.
oh and it is REALLY sad when 40 out 60 students sit there and argue with him because he made a comment about him trying to make students fail. when the WHOLE class is arguing with him, that should tell you something. out of 3 tests, one person in all the classes got an A. he said he doesnt understand students because 5 year olds understand it. hm..
Talks WAY too much about his self, wont let you take notes, Is too much into rubbing the fact he has a PhD and so on in the students faces.
He is a great professor. You will have to do all the work to pass this class. Most of the work is pretty easy if you read the book, like chapter summaries and coloring. He really makes you force yourself to learn. You are not just reading a book, but you are actually interacting with the subject matter. Some of his rules might seem a bit awkward.

I just had him for the lab portion....lets just say i Got a 17 out of 30 on the final which was the 4th best overall...there were 2 B's in the class three C's and everyone else failed....Very Hard class...DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR LAB! Another bad thing is that when he lectures u have to stand and listen to him....RUN!
Avoid taking this teacher at all cost!! Don't say we didn't warn you. You'll be expected to color everything, draw posters and diagram and know every little detail -not like the other teachers! You'll spend more time coloring than actually studying!! I learned that I could draw!! how stupid is that? there's not enuf space to write everything!AVOID!
The comments below are correct! Please avoid taking Dr. Rainbow. It is unbelievable that this individual still teaches. He grades very unfairly, and most of the times, grades you on your artistic ability, not the knowledge acquired in the class. Too much drawing, coloring, and little learning. Avoid him at all cost if you want a fair grade.

i love dr.rainbow. his teaching methods are kinda odd but they do make you pay attention. the drawings that we did where helpful. the only thing i had problems with is you are not allowed to write notes until after he stops talking which is 3 minutes after the class ends. over all i will be taking him for any other bio labs.
Dr. Rainbow is one of the easiest teachers I have ever taken. He gives a lot of homework but it is all very simple. He also gives so much extra credit that if you fail a test you can make it up with extra credit. His lecture guide has sample tests that are just like the actual test. If you do the homework you are sure to pass.
He will keep you busy with charts and graphs. Take Art 101 as a pre rec...
Best BIO101 teacher you could take! A lot of memorization, drawing, and homework. But if you PAY ATTENTION, and do as directions tell you to do, you will pass the class no problem. Plus, no textbook required! Just a packet 1/2 the price of the text used in other classes.

Very intense, and dedicated to teaching. Uses every available second and stresses for lack of more seconds. Uses every possible tactic to give his students the best possible opportunity to absorb the material. Everything Rainbow does is absolutely dedicated to expanding the minds of his students. This class is life changing. Give it a chance.
He loves teaching but acts as if you also have a PhD. Hard to follow, lots of homework, and be prepared for a few big projects with lots of drawing and coloring. I suggest you take an art class first. Holds you over in class and doesn't give enough time to finish things in lab,plus he makes you stand ALOT.I do NOT recommend this teacher at all!!!
Easy A really. I got less because I was sick. Great Prof. Any students that complain about him really must not like biology. Lectures are fascinating also. I recommend him to anyone who cares about school at all.
He's kind of weird. I didn't like the way he made us stand up & wouldn't let us take notes sometimes because we had to be standing up. I think his class is too hard, especially his tests.
Before taking his class alot of people had me scared of him. Now that i look back however, i find that heis one of the best professors i've ever had. If you want to be amazed by a subject, take this class. You'll learn lots and feel enlightened in the area of biology. Even though it's only 101.
Tests are easy if you study the right material. All of the questions from the final are exactly the same as the 20 question prectice tests in the book you buy. Homework is unbearable. Spent most of the time on the poster trying not to mess it up so I didn't have to start all over again rather than learning.
dr. rainbow is not easy, BUT, if you want to learn his is the best. you do stand alot in his lab, and you do color, and he is anal about that but it does help you learn. this class is not an easy A, he will make you work for it, but in the end you will be a better student because of it.
This is NOT a class for the slackers and procrastinators. If biology is your thing i highly reccommend him! You learn ALOT but he makes you work for it. The lab requires alot of standing but he is passionate about his work. The lectutre requires alot of coloring and drawing if those arent your strong points then i would think twice.
Great teacher. Nice Guy but the only problem is that the written final is the most ridiculous final I have ever taken. Evryone else kissed his ass and did well on it but I didn't. I did all the work, studied for the tests and still got a C even though I know my average worked out to a low B. Just wish he graded everyone fairly.
I love this teacher. Sure, I felt like pulling out my hair most of the time, but he is very helpful, his kinesthetics will make it very easy for you to learn. I got a 42/100 on his first midterm, and I still passed with a B. You just have to do all your homework, it helps
Dr. Rainbow is the BEST biology teacher period. You work your a** off, but I am still amazed to this day how much I learned & I took it over a year ago. Need LOTS of time to devote to the class if you want an A or B. His teaching is on the forefront of the field & definitely prepares you for the university level. Slackers need not even bother.
Dr. Rainbow is a very intelligent teacher. Hard to read him sometimes and class can get downright scary at times but it makes you a better person. I did a LOT of work to get a C wtf. It was high but I totally respect this teacher no matter what. Those who don't like him aren't good students
I had Dr Rainbow more than 14 years ago when he was still new to AVC. He lays it out from day 1 what is required for a particular grade. It is up to the students to choose what work you do.If you complete it all, an A is not too hard. Dr. Rainbow is so great. I'm really more of a math person than a Bio person but his majors class did not put me to sleep. Don't fall behind ever and appreciate what you have.
I didn't learn a thing from this class. The lectures are long and dull. All the projects and tests are based on sheer memorization. Even the homework doesn't require any thinking. Lots of tedious busy work. Also, he treats you like a 4 year old. I don't recommend him at all.

Worst Teacher Ever! If you can, take this class at College of the Canyons! All it is is busy work and you dont learn a thing! He is the biggest narcicist ever, and half of his lectures are just random tangents that aren't in the book. He thinks he is God's gift to humanity (if he believed in God)This class is a waste of time, money and ATP!!!!!!!!!
Wow! He is one heck of a genius. In the beginning he was a little intimidating but in the last few weeks of class, he really shows students his sense of humor. There is work you have to do, but it's not hard at all so people shouldn't complain. Gives a lot of extra credit at the end of the semester. Only unserious juvenile students fail.
Just avoid to take this class.. All I did were drawing pictures, coloring and sitting in the lecture hall. I did not miss any assignments but tests were so hard and he only gives only 30points extra credit from now on. It is Very very very hard to get an 'A' in this class.
ok lets see... he is really not that difficult of a teacher just a bunch of busy work that makes you feel like you in elementary school, but you NEED to do the assignments because his test are very difficult to pass you need to draw his pics EXACTLY the same. did good but worked my butt off and let my other classes slip so think before you enroll
At first he is intimidating but he really knows his stuff. Only had him for lab but found them very interesting and enjoyable. His kinesthetics are helpful, but the practicals were kind of tough, and he makes you stand up when he talks and you can't take notes. There's no room for slacking off so you really need to pay attention.

Wow I read reviews from 7 years ago and it blows my mind that he still teaches the same way, ABSOLUTELY NO ORDER IN HIS CLASS. We took our first midterm around 3 weeks after the schedule on the syllabus...Now he's talking about COMBINING the 2nd midterm and final. I will make it one of MY LIFE GOALS to have new students avoid him!!! BELIEVE THAT.
This professor was HORRIBLE!!! He doesn't follow the syllabus, he makes you buy a book with usless information that he doesn't really use, he grades very unfairly. Bottom line this guy is crazy DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!

Even if all other classes are closed and his is the only one still open do not be tempted to take his class!!! You'll either waste time and eventually drop with a W or work your butt off the entire semester for a C.
I AM NOT A LAZY STUDENT! that being said avoid this class. He doesnt teach biology. The assignments are coloring and teach nothing. His course doesnt coincide with any lab. If the final happens to fall on a holiday he asks you to come make it up on a non-class day so if you work or have other classes youre screwed. horrible teacher. waste of money.

Whatever bad thing you've heard about this teacher IS true. It is the last day of his class, I'm still waiting to learn something. His class makes you feel like you are back in the third grade-he has you coloring stuff- that is the truth. WHATEVER YOU DO GET INTO SOMEONE ELSE'S CLASS!!!!! Great teacher. Some work just felt like busy work and some of the test formats (redraw a giant detailed diagram from memory) were ridiculous, but you will learn a lot. He is a genius and he knows it. Take him if you really want to know biology but be ready to jump through some seemingly unrelated hoops for your good grade.
Who ever gave this guy a good review this semester is obviously the teacher himself or a student in love. I stayed through the whole semester, he has this don't give-a-care, "don't bother with me with that", rather see u fail attitude all the time-COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL. And a terrible person.
I am trying to be fair here. This guy is an obvious genius. He is too smart to teach at this level. That being said- I am a hardworker, I am not a lazy student. I could not fathom being expected to memorize a hugely detailed diagram and re-draw it from memory. I couldn't even tell you the first thing about biology after 5 months of his class.

Honestly, he's not as hard as everyone thinks he is, BUT his class is time-consuming. Notes aren't necessary because he gives you his notes to study from. He grades generously on assignments but is more picky on tests. If students aren't as lazy as they say they are, then they should have had no problem getting an A in his class.

Poor dude has a tough job of trying to cram all that info in such a short amount of time. I learned a lot, but I know a lot of it didn't stick. I drew things, I wrote things, I dissected things, looked at stuff in a microscope, and even met the raddest chick in the world! Overall it was a good time, though MUCH more work than I was prepared for!
Textbook not required for class. He has his own study packet (purchase from avc bookstore). a lot of drawing and coloring for study diagrams that are useful for finals. got low scores on quizzes but received perfect grades for all my drawings, just a minus 1 or 2 because i didn't follow instructions (my fault). Almost made it to the b, but i got a
if you like drawing and not taking notes this is the class for you. he doesn't like you coming in late.their is alot of homework and big posters you have to do. for our class he was running 6 weeks behind. like i said lots of drawing. gets confused back tracks alot! hes hard. (dont take him unless you have to)
If you have other responsibilities, such as life, kids or work, aviod this class entirely. Dr, Rainbow is a nice guy with a dry sense of humor who will pencil whip you the entire way. I drew his ISDs so that I could obtain extra points and still received a D in his class. This class should be taken as a stand alone ONLY! Good luck!
The worst teacher ever. This was more of an art class than biology, i didnt learn a thing. He's very arrogant and assumes you understand, and the worst thing is you can not take notes, he will call you out and thinks what he says is the only way to go, I got a "C" and i am an "A" student, he is so so so BAD, avoid avoid avoid, by far the worst.
Dr. Rainbow is a nice and obviously intelligent professor. I did get an A but I found his class very disorganized. He was so far behind the whole semester we never actually caught up. This class requires lots of time and hardwork it will not be an easy grade.
Class isnt hard if u know how to follow instructions u don't have to take notes but he gives u everything u need so all u gotta do is listen I recommend u listen in His class. Useless class, you have a total of perhaps 3 REAL grades for the entire semester. He grades on artistic ability, and assigns a joke of a book that makes things almost impossible to comprehend. Pompous, unapproachable and stubborn are words that describe him. Never taking another class with him ever again.

This teacher may know his stuff but he struggles to stay organized and does not make things clear. Im pretty sure he forgets tht some people are taking more than 1 class becuase he would throw projects at us all the time and most had to do with drawing wish he expected you to do really well. i would not recommend him
Horrible educator! He definitely knows his stuff and I respect him for that, however he is extremely unorganized, his lectures NEVER coincide with labs and the textbook he wrote is a joke! Grades on artistic ability reather than knowing the material. I will NEVER take him again and I do not recomend him to any serious biology student.
Rainbow is actually a really great instructor with a good teaching method and I'm really glad I took his class. I hated biology before but the way he teaches made it really interesting. Never note taking just listen and do the work. If your lazy you won't pass but this class is def worth it, I learned so much.

great teacher! know's his stuff really helps you understand the material with all sorts of visuals. a lot of people resented the kinesthetics he made us do, especially the boys, how ever they really helped. a lot of home work easy A . just a lot of drawings and posters.
If you love art take this class. He gives you everything you need to know for the class and test, i's p to you if you want to put in the work. You do alot of drawings. a little bit weird but he does help you if you need it just dont be afraid to ask.
I found Dr. Rainbow to be very scatterbrained but he is a very nice man and very helpful if you ask for it at appropriate times. I passed with an A but I worked my butt off for it.
Rainbow is a bona fide genius and will be your guide on the path to enlightenment, doing kinesthetics all the way. His passion for science is beyond compare. He has an uncanny ability to visualize and portray biochemical processes on the molecular level. Taking his 110 course changed my life! Work hard and you just might be able to fenagle an A.
Pick a different teacher. I took the lecture with him and failed it. However I got a B+ in the lab. How does that happen?
I had Rainbow for Bio 101 and he taught WAY above that level. He was really unorganized and his exams were absolutely ridiculous. You are NOT allowed to take notes while he lectures and if you do he yells at you. He?s an incredibly intelligent man and fairly nice, but not the best professor for basic Bio. I recommend taking someone else.
Not a teacher, more of a talker. Catch is, you cant take notes, and you had better be a great artist, because that's what your grade is based off of. I learned absolutely nothing more than that this man has an intolerable ego with not a lot of personality to back it up.
I took his class in 99. Don't know if he has changed. I transferred to a 4 year animal science program and was much more prepared than my peers. In fact, I probably didn't even need to take genetics really at the 4 yr. You have to pay attention in his class, reading the book won't help you. He teaches like they do in the 4 year colleges.
He is my ULTIMATE favorite teacher. I wish all my teachers were like him. If you pay attention, & work hard you will enjoy his class. If you want to goof off, and be disruptive he will call you out on it. Love IT! I wish he taught all of the Biology classes at AVC. He is a genius, and is willing to share his time with students.
He is very intelligent but goes far beyond what you should learn in Bio 101. His main topic talked about is evolution. He does not prepare you for the lab and I feel like it is more of an art class than a biology class. I wouldn't take him again.

To start off, I will say that this is a very hard class for AVC. There are times when you will be flooded with homework but you will learn a lot. I would argue that Rainbow is one of the smartest, if not the smartest professor at AVC. Many people don't like him because he's very up front but he actually covers some very interesting material.

I believe he is an excellent professor. Yes he can be rude and tough to handle at times, but during my semester in his class I definitely learned a bunch. Just don't be lazy and do the work! Anyone could do it. You can learn a lot in his class as long as you pay attention.
The class can be an easy A but because all the work he assigns are very time consuming, you'll usually need to pick between your classes to prioritize. Work load worsens. His lessons are beyond interesting but you won't have the time or pleasure to take anything in. He requires question sets and ch summary from the book a week. Didn't learn a thing
He can be harsh. He will call you out if you are a lazy student. He is an excellent professor who loves and knows the subject matter very well. Lots of busy work. But you will learn. The trick with him is PAY ATTENTION! But if you ask him for help and he knows youre sincere, he is great. But he wont coddle you. And stay off your phones!!!
I took Dr. Matthew J. Rainbow's classes back in the day (mid 90's) and all I read is TRUE! He is arrogant, snobby, looks down on the students and has a power trip! HOWEVER, even though I've gone to grad school since I had his classes, I think he was one of the Best teachers I've ever had. Thank you, Dr. Rainbow.
Dr. Rainbow is incredibly brilliant and wonderfully passionate about his work. He may come off unapproachable, but is actually a very nice man if he can identify that you are a good student. Had him for lab, and it was as easy as can be. Give him the respect he deserves, and do your part as a student then he will gladly return the favor.
He is a brilliant man, but he doesn't teach biology very well. His Bio 101 class isn't a biology class, but rather an evolution class. He gives a lot of coloring assignments that help you learn, but once again, it is rarely about biology.
I took Rainbow a few semesters ago and he was awesome. Yes he's tough on students, but he was only tough on the ones who didn't show him the respect he deserved. The drawing assignments are intense but they will boost your grades up! I got 100/100 on all my poster board drawings, anyone can. Take him, he's great!
Don't even bother taking his 101 class. It's way too difficult and it's probably my biggest regret. Unless you are obsessed with memorizing material from a self-proclaimed genius and trying to draw and color the way he does, then take someone else. This class is way too demanding, especially if you have other classes.

Yes he is demanding, yes you will need to devote more time than you want to, yes you need to memorize and reproduce his accurate representations of bio reactions, but HELLO, this course is a requirement to get a bachelors degree. I didn't like his religious references, but I can admit that I learned more in this course than any other bio course.
When I took class I had a part time job, and was a full time student. A good grade is easy to obtain (i was 3 points from an A) if you follow his instruction perfectly, and You managed your time. Is a self proclaimed genius, and will single you out if you are lazy. If you are anything but an atheist you will have a more difficult time in his class
Spent so much time during the labs talking about material that was completely unrelated to lecture that on the DAY OF practicals he'd be going from station to station INTRODUCING us to concepts we should have been previously introduced to and allowed time to study for. I loved Dr. Rainbow. He cares so much about his students learning, which is why he teaches the way he does. I didn't like when we had to talk about religious crap instead of sticking to real biology (evolutionary based.) He is brilliant and the only reason people complain is because they have an issue with evolution and the fact that he cares.

Preaches 'Einstein's grandmother' method,you understand the concept if you can teach it in simple terms. This class will consume a lot of your time so I suggest taking easy classes along this one. For right out of High school students skipping 101 and getting into this class prepare for a major load of work. It's a do-able class as long as you attend, do your homework, and study. Do not dream of procrastinating, not even once!
I already have a Bachelor's Degree and am attending school again so I can change fields and have never had a professor like this. He will record an hour of tardiness for being 5 min late to lecture or lab and will penalize your grade for it and he will make you raise your hand to use the restroom and will give you crap for it in front of the class
Awful class. His grading policy is awful, he guesstimates the value of things on the spot. So he may give one person 5 pts, and another 7 for the same work. I missed one lecture, and made it up asap and never missed a class and got a B for attendance when other students missed more lectures and got same score as me. He is unfair and rude. AWFUL
I'm an atheist and I still could not stand how much he brought religion into EVERYTHING when it came to using science to put down religion. If i wanted to debate theology I would take a theology class. Worst teacher I've ever had. AVOID HIM! It makes me sick that this man qualifies as a teacher.
So strange. He gives you the exact test in the form of assignments prior the test. He blatantly tells you, this is the test... and yet people somehow don't understand and are angry. If you take this class and take it seriously, you can pretty much sleep through the rest of your biology courses until you hit your masters degree or so.
All of the big assignments require mindlessly copying his own work verbatim. What kind of professor requires a student to copy his own work for full credit?This one. Rainbow is unclear about a lot of things. His first midterm was complete memorization that we didn't learn in class. He definitely brought my gpa down. He treats his students like children and it's completely annoying!

Great professor, doesn't let you take notes because he gets you involved in the lecture. He has his own textbook/packet. It contains ALL NOTES, HOMEWORK, AND COPIES OF THE MIDTERMS/FINALS!Do not take if you have a full schedule. Might want to take a drawing class. He will make you learn. LOTS OF HOMEWORK. I took him for bio lecture 101, he is a good instructor , he is hard you have to work for your grade but as long as you stay on track and turn everything in when asked youll be fine. i would take him again, i really liked his class. btw you have to buy a packet that cost around $90 and a book that cost around $16.

TAKE HIM, against what other students say about him being an atheist he truly cares about his students. Yes he will call you out in class, and yes he may make you feel embarrassed but it's only to show other students that they need to listen. If you are a good student who isn't lazy and won't miss his class you will do just fine. Take him!
He is passionate about the subject. He doesnt let you take notes because everything is provided in his packets and because taking notes destroys your chance of learning the lecture. A lot of work, and he talks about religion, but religion is a serious issue and biology can address it. If you pay attention and are interested you will learn.
The tests were extremely hard, and even after doing most of the many assignments and attending the classes, I still didn't pass. It would probably help to have an art or creative interest for all the diagrams you have to do. Now that I have to take it again to move on, I will definitely be avoiding his class.
Its pretty simple with him. If you like to learn, want to learn about sciencebiology, then take him. He will work you, you will need to actually know the material and pay attention. He isnt there to baby you, but to show you what its like at an actual university. If you want to learn, and are hard working, this is the teacher to take.
I was dreading taking his class. I HATE this class. I feel like I didn't learn anything. His teaching is old school and it isn't the way students learn today. His midterms and whole class layout is crammed and just plan ridiculous. I wish I could've taken another professor and actually learned something besides coloring.
I loved Dr. Rainbow. I feel like he does do a good job at explaining things, sometimes he explains a little too much though. I like how he explains the labs to you step by step. I find him very funny, he gets really excited about certain things but it keeps the class interesting. He doesn't make you buy a book, listen to what he says and study!!!

Be on time and prepared to take weekly quizzes and turn in weekly pre lab homework. Spend majority of class time explaining lab material. Seems to be passionate about what he teach. I would take a class with this teacher again.
I am very disappointed on how we can't choose any other professors for Bio 110. He will give you a very detailed diagram to memorize in a short amount of time. You could memorize that whole diagram with COMPLETE details but get marked off by the colors. I want to learn this class so bad but his teaching style is also very disorganized.
I didn't learn anything in his class at all. All he will make you do is color sheets and memorize huge coloring pages and know nothing about it. He doesn't let you take notes at all which is horrible. He's a very picky grader too
There is so much coloring in this class. In this class its just memorizing his words, word 4 word .At the end of the semester he gave way to much work that he never had a chance to give earlier it was to much. I took the honors option for this class. there was a lot of work for the honors but it was all easy so i suggest starting everything early.
He gave us his own made coloring workbook that's sold only at the AVC bookstore - not joking. If he can put aside his ego and focus on teaching instead spending so much time building himself up then maybe I would have been able to actually learn something in his class. Memorize his charts and have lots of coloring pencils on hand and you will pass.

I only had him for lab, he does not let you write down notes makes you stare at him while he gives an extremely long lecture. In lab we do prelab, but do not follow the rest of the lab as follows he does everything and has you watch. I am hands on so I did not succeed as I had hoped to. If you are good at memorizing and no structure take this.
One of the hardest classes that I have taken at AVC but also the one I've learned the most in. He will really make you work for your grade but he's always willing to help if you have questions.
He is not the best teacher or the worst. I mean he's just really tough on attendance. So if you're late and you have an assignment due that day he won't take it unless you have a once in a semester form he gives you 2 of them but the second one you have to have proof . He doesn't let you take notes and makes you memorize .there is an essay in this
Best/Worst Professor ever! We had tons of work at the end of the semester. If you're a biology major definitely take him! He is NOT easy but well worth it. He loves to ramble and argue so beware. If you are not serious about your education do not take him! You must buy the book that he put together it is ridiculously expensive for the quality
Overall, Professor Matthew Rainbow cares about his students and how much they learn from his class. It is a lot of memorization. While being in his class you have to be open-minded and actually try to understand the material because he uses his own textbook that he created.
Recommended for bio majors. The work gets really overwhelming toward the end of the semester. HAVE to buy book he wrote himself, or you will NOT pass. Lots of coloring. Does not like note taking during lectures. Skip class-Miss a TON of info, and paying attention is an absolute must, he will call you out for not making eye contact w/ him.
Rainbow absolutely requires attendance, lots of tests and quizzes. The class is all about memorisation. He uses his own textbook. He does however spell out exactly what he expects, there's no surprises. Don't take if you aren't willing to listen to boring lectures and put in a LOT of work.
Dr. Rainbow is an excellent teacher! However he is very strict and a tough grader. He gives LOTS of homework, projects, tests, and a 7 page paper. However, if you really want to learn and are willing to put in the work this class is DEFINITELY worth it! Dr. Rainbow changed my perspective on evolution and pushed me to think far more critically.
He is an excellent and passionate in what he teaches. He is not as easy as people may think, his class is doable, and makes you work like crazy for your grade. Yes his aesthetics for biology is out of proportion, but it works most of the times. Study before hand for his midterms, and do not fall behind on assignments, because it is time consuming.
Dr. Rainbow is very knowledgeable about cellular biology. If you come to him with an issue he is genuinely understanding! He will make you think critically about evolution, and the creation of life; BUT he won't stomp on your beliefs. Come in with an open mind and you'll be fine. Be prepared to read the majority of the textbook for homework.
First, he is an amazing teacher but you need to record his lectures because he doesn't really let you take note. He has is own book that he has made and it is very comprehensive. He is a tough grader on tests/quizzes but on assignments not so much. His class is tough, very tough but it is worth it and you will learn a lot.
His lab is very lecture heavy and you are often rushed to get the work done but if you make it through the first three labs without crying you should be fine. He does give you a lot of info to process and most of it is useful if you're in both his Lecture and lab but if you just in his lab zoning out will probably happen.
This man is all about microbiology and the theory of evolution you stay in class the entire time even when it is unnecessary he does not explain things clearly he gets off topic and is by far worst professor ever
There is no doubt Dr. Rainbow is knowledgeable or passionate about what he teaches. I found the class really unenjoyable due to his classroom management and rigid personality. Dr. Rainbow uses up all of your class time and even extra sometimes just to "teach" us things that don't even go with the assignment on hand. I would take Jedi or Melissa.
Be ready to color. His teaching methods are different, but they work. If you can participate, do so. Its corny but helps out when your taking the test. Don't wait until last minutes to do assignments. It will bite you in the butt. I got a C, not because he was hard, but because I procrastinated a lot on the work. Should have been an easy A.
I wish I could say he was a bad teacher and he doesn't know what he is doing but that would be a bold faced lie. He is infuriatingly good at what he does and knows his stuff. If you talk to him he will help you but he does have a better than you attitude. He has earned it though and knows how to teach it to you whether you like it or not.

Professor Rainbow is an excellent teacher! I took him for intercession and his labs are a bit lecture heavy. He wants your undivided attention, so taking notes is not really possible. I thought that would be a problem, but he explains everything in great detail with kinestetics which helps the information stick. I wish I could take him for all bio.
There's a lot of info in BIO and Dr. Rainbow sincerely wants us to understand every aspect, or at least as much as we can. He is very specific and detail-oriented, pushing us to be likeso. Can be intimidating! If you really want to go deep and beyond, plan to spend 15-25 hours/week for this course. Don't underestimate the work involved as I did.
Dr. Rainbow gives lots of coursework to complete throughout the semester so it's a huge point system. In class there were no notes taken so the textbook was just used for chapter modules. His exams are given to us in our study packets so he expects everything to be WORD FOR WORD and colored how he colored. Lots of memorization!
If you are a kinesthetic learner, this may be the class for you. Does not let you take any notes. Also does not let you do the lab yourself - he does everything for you and rushes through dissections in the last 5 min. His quizzes are VERY tough. Two people received A's in my class and he was surprised the number was that high.
There is no doubt Dr Rainbow is very intelligent and is passionate about biology However I learned more about evolution than biology His texts are extremely difficult and you are heavily graded on drawing and coloring If you want a good challenge than take his class if you can pass his class than congratulations you can pass any college class
He is very passionate about Biology. He uses kinesiology during his lectures. Meaning, he demands your participation in hand gestures & asks that you repeat after him during lab & lectures. It can be silly at times but it does help you retain the material. Dont skip class, too much info given & you will fall behind. Lots of coloring too! Good prof
Took Rainbow nearly 11 years ago! His lectures came back to me all through nursing school, on into pre-med studies and now as I manage my own business. I will never forget how things work, like phospholipids with their water loving heads and Oily tails. I found, his discriptions of things made me respect the world around me & truly apply it.
Mr. Rainbow required that students standup in the 3 hour class the entire time and he takes offense when you don't look at him the entire time even if you just happen to look away for a moment. He did not allow students to take notes in class which made taking the tests more difficult. He wasn't clear on what would be included in the tests.
Dr. Rainbow is smart. He should allow his students to view his slides because his lectures are very interesting. He doesn't like you taking notes, is oddly controlling about your participation/attention, and the amount of time he expects you to dedicate to this class is outrageous. Yet, I learned a lot and he cares about his students.
He's very smart and his ways of teaching are very unorthodox, some learn well and some don't. You'll only fail the class by not doing any of the work, but there is a lot of work to keep up with. He'll make sure to squeeze out every last minute to lecture and even lectures after the final but participation an attendance is counted towards your grade
Rainbow is an extremely arrogant and condescending teacher. He expects you to do thing exactly the one he would or hell call you out in front of the whole class and embarrass you. He expects you to dedicate a lot of time to his class, causing you to fall behind in your other classes. Assigns a ton of work, adding up to a 2000 point class.
Took him for bio lab 101, get ready to STAND for the entire three hours as he lectures. His practicals are different from other lab teachers but he helps you throughout the lab as a class instead of having you do it by yourself.
Dr. Rainbow is difficult, at best. He is very smart and acclaimed, but in an attempt to prove this, he comes off as condescending and simply rude towards others. He is highly meticulous and methodical, to the point where it feels like you're walking on eggshells around him. Don't take him if you want to succeed in any other classes you have.
I honestly appreciate this class, looking back, although the work was overwhelming at times. You will learn a lot and even though Dr. Rainbow can seem intimidating, you have to learn to take his criticisms with a grain of salt. Hes actually not a terrible person if you try and get to know him. Stay on top of the work and its truly an EASY A!!!!
The saddest thing is that after taking him, I bought new colored pencils for the next semester, thinking I'd need them and I never did. A lot of his teachings really do stick with you, but he tries to include other subjects (Physics, Chemistry, History) while teaching Biology and it's overwhelming at times. Take someone else if you can.
If you put the work into this class you will pass. People who say his hard are just lazy. His a very smart man and is very passionate about the subject. Dont expect to get an easy A, you have to work for it.
I have Dr. Rainbow this semester for both lecture and lab. If you do take BIO 101 I wuld reccommend you take him for both lecture and lab that way you are always on the same page. He demands your attention and respect from the beginning. If you just pay attention and participate, his class will be a breeze. I will take him again if available!
This class is worth it if you have time to spare for a ridiculous amount of assignments. They're fairly easy but can up to a couple of hours to complete. Make sure you pay attention in class because he calls on people randomly to repeat what he says. Do all the assignments, study, and pay attention and you'll get an A.
If you're a Bio major planning to transfer, take his class because you'll learn whether or not you're really cut out for it. His workload is heavy, but if you can learn to manage it then it will be very helpful when you get to upper division courses. He is self absorbed, but if you all fight him on something, then he'll usually back down.
If you are just one minute late or have to leave early for ANY reason you'll lose many points. He spends all his time ranting about evolution to the point he crams everything in the last week. The only reason to take him is if you are a firm believer in evolution and everything else is stupid and you love the environment more than your own mother.
Dr. Rainbow is a really good teacher. He teaches very well. He is very big on full attention in the classroom and listening. He will ask you to repeat things out loud. A very different style of teaching but allows you to really learn. You have to study and do work for this class. Its not an easy A but you will guarantee learn a lot.
Checked out rate my professor before enrolling for his class, honestly not as hard as some think. If you still remember your basic biology from high school you'll be good. Had him for lab too, really thorough. Take advantage of doing well on the mini quizzes! Those are probably the easiest points.
Dr Rainbow is a tough teacher, but after taking the class I found myself admiring him more for passion to the subjects he teaches. Easy A as long as you do all the homework and get good grades on it. Visit him during office hours for more help. I found he was more approachable during office hours than in class.
He's tough but after taking him, I was ready for university level of science classes. His methods really helped prepare me, I transferred to a university after taking him last semester and it really helped me. He's tough but he cares if you make the effort and also come prepared with specifically what you're struggling with and he'll help!
Dr. Rainbow is a rigorous professor but he makes you learn. He's really big on kinesthetic learning and it helps a lot. He doesn't require a textbook and if you want an A in the course you MUST do well on the mini-quizzes and template tests. Be warned, he takes up ALL of lab time and if you're not doing an experiment, you're learning.

If you are serious about learning the basics of Biology and want an EASY class this is the one! Dr. Rainbow is amazing! You don't even have to take notes all he wants you to do is listen. Just trust him! he will tell you what will be on his test and quizzes. He is so caring, he always reviews before quizzes and pretty much gives you the answer.

Professor Rainbow is tough at first but its to get you to pass the class. STUDY his quizzes are straight forward but you need to do your part and prepare for them. He is a great professor and cares about biology.
I took him Intersession 2020, he's a great teacher, originally I wanted to drop the course because he uses kinesthetics and likes you to repeat things, but overall its actually very helpful. You're graded based off of participation, pre-labs, and quizzes and he's very generous with grading. His teaching made the actual lecture more clear and better
Do not that this class. Even if its the only one thats open. This teacher is the worst and makes things MUCH more complicated then it needs to be. He literally tries to make you confused on quizzes and he does not like to make things clear. He will belittle you and make you feel stupid if you do not understand something. DO NOT take his class!
Although Rainbow is a fairly good teacher, he can be a hard person to deal with. He can be very rude and demeaning to students. This is a heavy studying class that requires a lot of memorization.
This teacher is hands down the worst one I've had at AVC. He is VERY accommodating! He expects everyone in his class to be an artist like him and he makes things complicated. Get ready to pay $$$ for his study packet that is just hundreds of pages of photocopies of all his work.
His ratings make him seem scarier than he actually is. He gives a lot of work but the work itself isnt incredibly difficult. His tests are easy, you know exactly what will be on the test everytime. Hes an easy grader as well. He seems unapproachable but he can be quite nice. Hell probably yell at you at some point, dont take it personally.
His quizzes are unnecessarily confusing and he does not like to give you the answers to the questions you get wrong. He is very strict and likes things done a certain way. I would not recommend this teacher! He is rude and condescending.
If you want to sign up for an art class instead of biology and be disrespected the entire semester, be sure to take this class! He will make you do HUGE, extremely SMALL detailed, color coded drawings. He treats you like a child, and if you have a question he will make you feel like a burden. I wish I had more room to explain my disappointment!!!
He will use every second of class time and even go over. He is very specific and his coloring assignments, which there are a lot of, take HOURS to do!! We have 2 days left b4 our final and he is making lectures that we need to watch on our own time and we still have like 3 assignments that he hasn't even posted yet, with only 2 days left!
If you ask him to send you something for an assignment he will tell you to ask someone else. He is a very tough grader and has A LOT of assignments. His lectures are very long and his tests and quizzes are fill in the blank and color coding. He will make you feel dumb if you ask questions. Would not recommend.
For BIO LAB 101, I would not recommend taking this teacher. His lectures and quizzes were very confusing. He doesnt let you know what you get wrong for quizzes. I am very glad I had him during the pandemic because I dont know if I would have passed his class if it werent online.
Currently taking this class online during the summer and I have not enjoyed it one bit. I would avoid this professor at all costs unless you are a biology major because he does know what he is talking about. Other than that, this class is more difficult than it should be for an intro course. I have much to say but few characters left. Don't take.
Dr. Rainbow is the definition of a perfectionist. If he mentions anything be ready to have a question about it show up on his test and quizzes. He knows his class is hard and takes pride in it. His workload is simply to much and he will penalize you for taking too long to understand it. Overall a very challenging and bad professor.
Lots of coloring/drawing assignments that take HOURS to complete. He uses all of the class time and sometimes goes over. Shows prerecorded lecture videos each class then lectures for whatever time there is remaining. Quizzes are long and confusing.
Hes an easy teacher. He does give a lot of work toward the end of the year. During the first half of the year, not so much its just listening to lectures. And then he will cram in assignments toward the end. Its easy stuff, just time consuming. He makes u do stuff with your hands, but believe it or not it does help u retain the information.
Professor Rainbow is very knowledgeable on the subject of science. He really care about the information sticking for further success. He makes you use kinesthetic as a memory tool. It can be frustrating but trust me it works! The work is very manageable, you show up and participate then you are bond to pass. He methods have help me in other classes
Coloring 101. I used to hate molecular biology because of him. I now freaking love this field and pursuing a graduate degree, BUT NO THANKS TO HIM - I have my professors when I transferred to thank for that. For a field that encourages you to be imaginative, his dull teaching is an insult. He's also a narcissist who loves praising himself.
Is super picky, big projects with barely any time, tests are so specific to what he says and don't really go with what's in the lab.
Extremity difficult person. He is strict with rules. But he does not want you to fail. He literally gives you everything you need. You just have to try. I wouldn't want to hang out with this guy, but I would take his class again.
If you're an A student but want to risk getting a B to challenge yourself. Take this professor. If you are normal and want to risk it take this class. If I could do it again, I would have waited a semester. If I was a counselor I'd tell you to take someone else. You should probably take someone else. told you so.
Do NOT take this class! I hated this class so much. This class gave me so much anxiety. I hate how he calls on you to do a kinesthetic in front of the whole class and if you do it wrong you have to do it over again and its just SO EMBARRASSING! thats why I had anxiety when I was in the class. Im counting down the days I have left for this class.
This was one of the best professors I've ever had. I did have to take the class twice. BUT if you take him seriously you will be better off for it. His content isn't hard but there's a lot of it but trust me genetics is far easier if you take genetics if you take him first. He won't discourage your faith just give you the ability to defend it.
Dr. Rainbow is an amazing lecturer, and a great professor overall. But he will make you WORK. Ive had many sleepless night finish up coloring projects. The class is based on color coding assignments/tests (ex. Coloring the cell) that really helped me learn. But its not gonna be easy, the most common grade in his class is an A-B.
Get ready to work. The assignments are very heavy and there are two giant posters that he makes you do that are colored from corner to corner. Assigns multiple big assignments at a time so you need to be on top of everything. He treats this class as if it's your only one. You're not allowed to take notes. Can be rude when you talk to him.
Arrogant. He wastes class time with philosophy, physics, faith, calculus, and chemistry and leaves us to study biology on our own or watch his videos. After calling you up to speak in class, he interrupts you if you don't regurgitate his words verbatim. He poorly rationed his time, and we took 3 tests and 2 finals in last 2 weeks of class.
Extremely disorganized and unprofessional, brings his own opinion into lecture that is extremely anti progressive (ie Covid or abortions) He expects you to memorize everything stated and if not able to answer his questions on the spot he will overdo it when scolding a student. Uses other students as examples to scare you negatively. It gets worse.
THIS lecture class does not prepare you for your lab class or lab practical. WASTE OF TIME DO NOT TAKE!! Rainbow is the most arrogant man on PLANET EARTH! Generally an easy class most of the homework is simple coloring assignments and pretty much every test is just memorizing a diagram and drawing it out, you are expected to watch a lot of video lectures outside of class I would say around 3-6 hrs per week. I did not take him for the lab but I can say that the lecture portion did not line up withmine
This professor is the worse! He thinks all students learn by kinetics! He tells you you are allowed to take notes but will not allow you to take notes! Be ready to have your midterms all on memorization and coloring. Cramming last min midterm because he ran out of time. He will pick on you and make you feel dumb if you can't repeat what he says!
expect it to feel like a game of roulette. always ends late since he continuously talks for 3 hrs. forbids u from taking notes and expects u to keep up with his lecture even if ur not in it. assignments are extremely time consuming and felt more like biochem than bio101. i was more stressed for this than lecture and it was only 30% of my bio grade.
He gives "tests" that are just to memorize his arts and crafts projects, word for word, color for color, and picture for picture. I have not met one person who enjoyed his class.
I understand Dr.Rainbow has a lot of passion for Boilogy but comes off as aggressive about it. There is a lot of homework for his class and some heavy work projects. Be prepared to play the memory game because he has you remember all his work and diagrams for tests.
This class is for people who have good memory, if you don't please do not take his class. Lecture was fine since you don't really have to pay attention you really do not need that for the test. Lots and lots of hw/ studying. Very time consuming. Lots of stress.
Honest thought if you are taking his class, be prepare to just say Yes and do a lot of work. It is very time consuming. He can come off as arrogant because he doesn't about any other opinion but his. Don't take Lab with him, he will lecture you the whole time, and you won't be able to do Lab. Lots of arts and crafts!

Be prepared if you want to take notes he will to tell you to stop and listen basically putting you on the spot. You have 2 poster projects that you will need to done of them will take like 8 hours and you still have to take a mid term on it. In my semester we have like 5 midterms? We barely are doing midterm 2 when classes finishes in like 2 weeks
It's a "flipped class" so you end up with HOURS of lecture videos. VERY hard grader, unclear guidelines. Rude. Horrible with organization so you end up with 3 of the 5 midterms in the last few weeks of class. The tests are giant posters you memorize and fill out. Arts & crafts constantly. Other profs look at me with pity when I say I have Rainbow.
If you don't have a good memory, then I advise you not to take his class. Every midterm is based on memory and coloring every little detail. He's a though grader and I felt like I learned nothing in his lectures. I dreaded going to class. The lecture and lab do not go together whatsoever (I didn't have him for lab). I wouldn't take his class again.

Run. Do not look back. A direct quote from him chastising someone: "pay attention. You are missing the pearls of wisdom dripping from my lips". He generated his own diagrams and they are "probably the most brilliant things you'll learn in college". You need to memorize said diagrams and fill them in and color them for his exams. Take someone else!
You ARE allowed to take notes, however, you are advised by Professor Rainbow to just listen to his lectures and take crucial notes when needed. His tests are heavily based on drawing and writing from memory so be prepared to study since he gives you weeks in advance to study upon the tests. A LOT of lecture videos. Be prepared to WORK for that A!
I thought Professor Rainbow is a valid teacher take. He is definitely lecture heavy and if you don't do the studying for his midterms, you'll definitely be behind. He is very passionate about biology and wants people to feel the same way as well.
This biology teacher is disorganized, unapproachable, and fails to engage the class. Concepts are rushed, questions are dismissed, and feedback is useless. If you want to learn biology, look elsewhere.
He lectures the entire class period and will call you out if he thinks you're not paying attention. His assignments consist of writing/ drawing on an entire poster paper, video lectures for homework that vary in length from about 30 mins to 1 1/2 hours, and tests that require a lot of memorization and coloring.
Possibly the most rigorous class at AVC sans nursing majors. Pedantic; Information overload coming from a PhD. All 5 midterms are memorization-based (emphasis: memorizing color) & multi-choice final. Erudite professor, but there's an excess of work, some EC. Very passionate & thorough, but w/ a noted temper. For the *masochist* bio/nursing majors.

I passed his class, but his ego is unbearably high. "Stop taking notes and pay full attention to me," "Repeat after me," "Stand up for me," "Obey my commands." These are 100% real quotes that he said in class. If he wasn't so egotistical and was instead a fun and approachable person, I'd give 5 stars.

I'm not fond of the professor. I will admire the course material he made tho. If you're aiming for an A just know it's stressful. He offers a lot of extra credit which is lovely. You actually learn. All the things people say about his ego are sadly true. He does have an extreme aversion to note taking in his class and will call you out infront of the class for "ignoring" him. Many artsy projects get very tedious after a while, and they may be overwhelming for some. Overall, pretty chill teacher, just a lot of work. Also, the lab is pretty fun, take it if you can.
The Rainbow class was disappointing. The instructor often ran over time, lectures lacked focus, and grading was unclear. Despite effort, learning was minimal. The teaching style felt outdated, and unless improvements are made, it may be time for the instructor to consider retirement. Avoid this professor like the plague.
Genuinely the most stressful class I have ever taken, Rainbow assigns a LOT of art projects and work; not SUPER hard and instructions are clear, work is demanding by volume. 3 memorization "midterms" (~1 week to study), weekly video quizzes, 80 question online final, and ~3k earnable class points. Strict, passionate. I hate to admit, I'll miss it.

Dr. Rainbow was a great professor, he honestly just wants students to understand+succeed in biology. There is a huge workload but it's simple if done ahead of time+if you pay attention. Attendance is mandatory and will dock points if tardy or absent. He will answer your questions in depth. Demonstrates using hand signals so it's better understood.
Awesome class with a passionate, knowledgeable professor who teaches clearly and makes the subject engaging. The workload is HEAVY, but it's the first class where I truly felt like I learned a lot. Totally worth it if you're willing to put in the effort. Prof gets back to you fast and is always willing to explain more. Don't be late.
Bio101L was a great experience! The professor explains concepts in detail and really makes sure you understand the material. I learned a lot and will truly miss this class. He teaches differently from other professors, so I recommend taking his lecture too, otherwise you might feel a bit lost.
This guy is bad, every class was a struggle to stay awake and with him calling on students for literally jst abt anything its a horrible environment. He's so demanding too, "Everybody stand up" and "Lets do a kinesthetic" are classics from him. He also has a weird thing with religion, wanted to debate students abt their religion so bad.jst horrible
Rainbow is not a terrible professor, he's just a little more strict than some, and not a lot of people like him. However, I think he's a good teacher. He doesn't have to read off a powerpoint every lecture, and shows us lots of models. He makes his own worksheets and tests, which I personally thought were all very easy and straightforward.
This class was a drag every week, constant lecture from the moment class began, to the exact time it's supposed to end. Sometimes a few minutes longer because he loves to talk. Studying is a joke; he only gives you an hour to fill and color the template from memory. Even if you remember it all, you won't have enough time to get your deserved points
He's a yapper. He's a cool guy, not a good prof Be prepared to fall asleep and rip your hair out. He gives you no materials, huge projects, and memorization quizzes. You need no life and to be dedicated to his class to pass. I had to leave after a month; there's absolutely no way I was going to pass.
I would advise you not to enroll in his lectures, even if it's a necessary class it is fine to wait until next semester you would most likely be better off.

100% would recommend to avoid his class. Ive never been bad at science and biology before, I even took 4 years of biomedical science before this class and it was mostly review. The way he assigns and teaches things is terrible. Be prepared for huge posters and lots of memorizing without and study guides or materials.

Yes he's ignorant and all the things ppl say he is. who cares? ignore him. his class is so easy. No multiple choice exams or crazy tests. Pure coloring and memorizing and he gives u the answers for lit everything from the midterms to small assignments. Ppl just want easy A's and are soft and dramatic get a grip. study hard work hard you'll get an A
The reviews on here made me scared. He is a little rough around the edges but just work hard do the work and you will get an A everything is just copying so try to memorize he will call you out for not paying attention so try not to daydream. Tons of extra credit. The posters were hard and he doesn't accept excuses so sallow ur pride and suck it up
